Drawing on the papers presented at CEEJA’s* first international conference addressing the long-neglected field relating to the generation, dissemination and application of technical knowledge in Japan from the Edo to the Meiji periods, this volume provides a valuable selection of new research on the subject, from Hashimoto Takehiko’s detailed examination of Tanaka Hisashige’s ‘Myriad Year Clock’, Regine Mathias’s paper on mining and smelting, and Erich Pauer’s overview of Japanese technical books in the pre-modern era, to Suzuki Jun’s detailed account of boiler-making in late nineteenth-century Japan. * Centre Européen d’Études Japonaises d’Alsace, 2017

Abstract:
Joseph Toynbee, an English physician, believed that the only way to develop a rational strategy for the treatment of ear diseases was to dissect the temporal bones of patients with known inner ear diseases. In his book Diseases of the Ear (1860), Toynbee noted that not one dissection of a diseased ear had been done before 1800, although thousands of dissections had been done on most other organs of the body. The techniques for examination of the temporal bones developed by Joseph Toynbee had multiple technical problems. German otolaryngologist Karl Wittmaack solved these problems and revolutionized the study of temporal bone specimens. An otologist in London, Charles Skinner Hallpike, became interested in studying temporal bone pathology while visiting Wittmaack’s clinic in Germany. Hallpike went on to develop his own temporal bone laboratory in which he worked with neurosurgeon Hugh Cairns to describe the pathology of Ménière’s disease.

Abstract:
Principles of physical assessment 90Assessing a child's temperature 92Assessing a child's heart rate 94Assessing a child's respiratory rate 96Assessing a child's blood pressure 98Observation of the sick child 100Recognition of the sick child 102The principles of paediatric physical assessment involve more than observation, palpation, percussion, and auscultation. It should be remembered that even though the examination of the child is relatively painless, interventions such as the introduction of an oroscope into the ear, the palpation of the abdomen, and a cold stethoscope on the chest might all be very stressful to the child. Consideration should always be given to the child's psychological needs....
