Abstract:
Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to identify the factors of adoption within alternative e-payments methods, and gain a deeper understanding of the reasons to why these factors affect the consumer’s adoption. This will be conducted through empirical research, as well as looking into previous theory in order to propose a research framework that is appropriately adapted to the specific phenomenon of alternative e-payments.   Problem: The substantial growth of e-commerce, and the limitations within conventional card payment has paved way for the development of new and innovative alternative e-payment methods. Past research point towards that, there are gaps in literature, where there is a lack of qualitative studies within the field. Furthermore, Sweden is one of the nations with the highest level of innovativeness, as well as e-commerce usage making it an appropriate market to analyze.   Method and Methodology: By applying an intepretevism paradigm, this research views knowledge from a subjective viewpoint. The primary data is collected through a qualitative approach, using one-to-one semi structured interviews, in order to obtain deeper a response. The gathered data is later on analyzed and compared with the previous research within the field.   Findings: The findings of this thesis identifies the factors of adoption within alternative e-payments and why they have an affect. Certain factors seemed to be of greater importance than others, and many of the factors held similarities showing their interdependent nature. Furthermore, new factors were identified as well as the factors being highly context specific, identifying gaps that should be addressed in future research.

Abstract:
E-commerce appears in a great time of growth and there's no clear indications of decrement. An important factor in e-commerce is the payment and the payment process. A well-functioning payment system is very important for companies operating in e-commerce to compete within the increasingly competitive market. Despite the fact that e-commerce is becoming more widespread every year there are still barriers that creates uncertainty and inconvenience for customers regarding the payment and the payment process. 38 % of Swedish customers have once canceled a purchase, where the most common reason refers to that they couldn't pay the way they wanted. If a potential customer have reached the payment itself it would be very unfortunate if the customer cut off the purchase due to the payment solution. The purpose with this study is to account for various factors and eventual barriers in the context of payment that affect customers. Furthermore, the study intends to present and explain how these barriers affect Swedish customers´ purchase intention. This is conducted through a qualitative research based on semi-structured interviews from a customer perspective. The conclusions show that e-commerce companies and payment system developers should focus on to accommodate multiple payment system choices, good usability, accommodate some kind of security function, i.e. BankID and clarify information regarding the payment process. In addition, there is a strong relationship between customers trust in the company and customers trust in the payment system.

This report deals with online Payment Service Providers (PSPs) from the developer's point of view. Two companies that were in or in close connection to the process of developing a web shop were interviewed and compared to the suppöy of payment options at a number of different payment PSPs. The interviews has shown a result which is probable that a new developer will get in contact with in the beginning. The position could be either as a web developer or as an owner of a web shop. It was also possible to establish that there were a number of PSPs suitable for different levels of knowledge within the field. Professional help such as advices and implementation is not necessary in order to be able to set up a relatively advanced web shop.

Abstract:
Abstract Background: Around 45% of Swedish consumers canceled their online purchase in 2018, due to too high delivery fees and issues concerning payments. This research is focusing on e-payments by utilizing the Technology Acceptance Model 3 and its determinants perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use, and how they contribute to the e-payment method decision. Additionally, the relevance of online trust and online security are examined in relation to purchasing cancellations due to trust and security issues in e-payment methods.   Purpose: The purpose of this research paper is to understand how Swedish millennial consumers’ perceptions of online security and online trust of e-payment methods effect on online purchasing cancellation. Furthermore, this paper examines how perceptions of usefulness and ease of use contribute as determinants in choosing between e-payment methods according to Swedish millennial consumers.   Method: The research is carried out in a qualitative manner by conducting a series of semi-structured face-to-face interviews. Fifteen Swedish millennials contributed to the empirical study. The gathered primary data is analyzed and then presented in chapter 4 and connected to the existing literature in chapter 5.   Conclusion: For the Swedish millennials, both online trust and online security are perceived as important determinants when evaluating whether or not the e-payment method could be used. When choosing between different e-payment methods, perceived ease of use seemed to be more important. Additionally, the decisions are made based on which e-payment method is secure, trustworthy, and easy to use. The presence of those determinants also increases perceived usefulness. When making purchases online domestically it appears that perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness weight heavier. While trust and security are given more importance if the purchase is made from a foreign website.

Electronic commerce is growing at an ever increasing pace every year. However, the payment mechanisms in use were developed without electronic commerce in mind, and as a result, must be modified before they may be used for online transactions. In this thesis, the online payment mechanisms in use are analyzed to find out if they meet present day electronic businesses requirements. A comparative study of existing payment mechanisms has been performed and their strengths and weaknesses evaluated. Recommendations are made for improved mechanisms capable of meeting the needs of consumers and businesses today.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The growing e-commerce market has fundamentally changed the consumption behaviors among swedes, and it is more popular than ever for people to carry out their everyday transactions online. These new shopping opportunities place different demands on the consumer compared to traditional shopping, and the consumer behavior has come to include more analysis regarding risk and security especially when it comes to the final payment step. This study therefore aims to create an understanding of consumers' experience of the importance of payment methods during the online buying process. To execute this aqualitative approach was used where the data collection has been carried out through method triangulation, in the form of a combination of observations together with semi-structured interviews. A total of 10 purchase interviews were made with respondents aged 26 - 59, where the participants fictitiously made an optional product purchase online, which they simultaneously verbally described through sharing their thoughts and motivations for their actions in the process. The observations were complemented with interviews to confirm the buying process but also to achieve an in-depth understanding of their behavior.  Results show that most of the respondents generally value the benefits that different payment methods provide when buying online, because it facilitates smooth and secure online transactions. Half of the participants prefer to pay directly for online purchases, while the other half prefer to pay after the product has been delivered, but it varies in what way these preferences affect their behavior during the buying process. Most of the respondents appear to place less emphasis on specific payment options during the buying process and devote more focus to other factors. It is shown that only three out of ten respondents value the payment method (invoice via Klarna) as a significant factor in their buying process in a way that they experience this influencing their choice of website. Part of the conclusion is that the result shows tendencies that the importance of payment methods in the online buying process varies with the type of purchase situation the payment takes place in, related to the consumer's perceived uncertainty about the purchase.

Elbasir, Mahmoud Hassan. "An investigation of factors affecting the adoption of e-payment system in Libya." Thesis, De Montfort University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2086/11420.

Abstract:
Electronic payment systems (EPS) have received considerable attention from researchers and business owners worldwide, because of their potential to support economic development and growth. Despite the significant contribution of the growth in EPS to the ability to complete transactions via the Internet, Libya lags significantly behind developed countries in its adoption of EPS. This research focuses on factors affecting EPS adoption and use in Libya, explaining how they positively or negatively affect Libyan customers and organisations‟ willingness to adopt EPS. Data was collected via semi-structured interviews with different stakeholders, including consumers, organisational staff (e.g. Telecommunications Companies, Banks, the Ministry of Telecommunication and Informatics, etc.), and strategic decision-makers (e.g. the Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Communications, Director of Islamic Banking at Bank of Republic). The research implements Grounded Theory methods (GT), in particular the Straussian approach, to analyse, explore, and investigate the socio-organisational, technical, political, and economic factors affecting the adoption of EPS in Libya, and importantly the relationship between these factors. It discusses the impact of the factors identified, from both organisational and consumer perspectives, highlighting the factors and issues that need to be overcome to support successful adoption of EPS. The findings confirm that, for consumers and organisations alike, economic factors (e.g. perceived benefits, cooperation with existing entities, mutuality of stakeholders, Internet costs, standard of living, marketing businesses, awareness, withdrawal control, XX feasibility studies on EPS implementation, Islamic banking services and competition) are the core factors influencing the system‟s adoption. Furthermore, the findings revealed three new and significant factors of relevance to Libya, including standard of living, post coding and the unstable political situation in the country. These represent a unique contribution to the body of knowledge, illustrating the attitude of the Libyan people toward Internet usage, and current obstacles to EPS adoption. The use of substantive GT, in particular the Straussian approach, for data collection and data analysis in the field of EPS adoption, and the assessment of organisational and consumer attitudes, is unique to this research to the best of the researcher‟s knowledge. Thus, the research embodies a substantial contribution to the body of knowledge. The interpretive analysis of data using a Straussian approach has permitted the researcher to attain a deep understanding of the socio-organisational, economic, political, and technical factors affecting adoption of an E-payment system in Libya, as implemented by different stakeholders: Consumers, and Organisational. The benefits that the adoption of EPS in Libya will bring, include facilitation of online transactions, the availability of more secure websites, easier payment and access to the global markets. Furthermore, detailed recommendations are also being offered to assist decision-makers in the development and introduction of EPS in Libya, i.e. including the Communications and Informatics Ministry, which is hoped will advise internet service providers and companies to discount the cost of using the internet for limited bandwidths, in order to insure everyone access to the internet, and EPS.

Abstract:
While the use of cash in Sweden is quickly decreasing, e-commerce spending is increasing at a substantial rate. Previous findings suggest that trust is an essential condition for successful e-commerce. Other studies report that one of the most common reasons why customers abandon their shopping cart online is because they were not able to pay using their preferred method of payment. The main scope of this study is to examine which payment methods are preferred by customers and how e-tailers are affected by which payment methods they provide. The study has been conducted using multiple methods of research in order to enable a comprehensive analysis of the Swedish online fashion industry. Data has been collected through surveys as well as through interviews and financial statements. The findings of the study indicate that customers seem to prefer safe payment methods when making bigger transactions, and convenient methods with lower transaction fees when making smaller payments. The number of payment methods provided by a e-tailer doesn’t seem to have a notable effect on sales or financial performance. In conclusion, the consumer’s trust in third parties, for example payment service providers like Klarna or Qliro, seems to have a distinct impact on trust in the e-tailer.

Abstract:
With the emergence of near-field technology (NFC), mobile terminal have become a true instrument of contactless payment. This type of system is a new opportunity to boost the electronic payment systems (EPS) for the micropayment. The objective of this research is to develop a model and measurement tools to handle and to identify factors influencing the acceptance of these systems. Based on the paradigms of the acceptance of technology and research around the SPE, we have developed a conceptual model which integrates the UTAUT and TTF. This model allows both to consider the adoption strategies of individuals and their intention to adopt. Indeed, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use and facilitating conditions are no longer sufficient for a technology to be adopted. The capabilities of this technology have to match the tasks that the user will perform. Our result have been measured and validated thanks to structural equations analysis of data collected from a sample of 629 individuals

Abstract:

Abstract:

This study objects to identify aspects that can promote or limit the emergence of mobile payment arrangements (m-payments) that can be used in microcredit initiatives in Brazil. The microcredit theme was chosen not only for the huge potential to perform microcredit operations in Brazil but also for the aspect of economic and social integration that microcredit operations can provide. The choice of mobile payment theme was based on the versatility and innovation of this payment method, with potential for a major transformation of payment methods in the Brazilian market. The analysis of the use of mobile payment initiatives in microfinance arose due to the contributions this mode of payment can bring to perform microfinance operations. The objective of this qualitative study is to assist in understanding the supportive and limiting aspects for the use of mobile payment initiatives in microcredit, as well as to verify what contributions the use of mobile payment can bring to perform microfinance operations. Additionally, using the information obtained from the Relevant Social Groups (RSG) involved in these payment arrangements, this work also aims to identify the influences of these agents to form and to adapt these arrangements. Information to conduct this study was collected primarily through in-depth interviews with selected participants of RSG from these payment arrangements representatives. The interviews were transcribed at the end of this work and represent an important source of information to those interested in the subject, considering the richness of detail presented. For the understanding and interpretation of the object of study, the theoretical framework presented by Coase and Williamson (Transaction Costs), Gannamaneni e Ondrus (Multilevel Framework) was used. With the publication of Resolution 4.282 of Brazilian Central Bank in November 2013, establishing the regulatory framework that governs the authorization and operation of arrangements and payment institutions in Brazil, the subject of this study becomes even more relevant for the academic community participants in the microfinance market and RSG members of the mobile payment arrangements. We hope with this study contribute to a better understanding of the barriers and facilitators for adoption and development of mobile payment arrangements, but mostly that this study may contribute to a greater interaction of these arrangements with microcredit initiatives.

Abstract:
Background: Electronic commerce has recently been seen as a very auspicious service of technology witnessed in the last decade. Several types of e-commerce initiatives include very modernized and upgraded facilities such as smart cards, online retailing, and remote payments that help make the payment process faster and more consistent. Therefore, there is a need to explore the factors from payment methods that influence a change in the purchasing behavior of a customer, due to the fact that constant development in technology is occurring. Furthermore, due to the ability to access and control digital technology, millennials are believed to be destined for a current business and have a significant impact on the corporate world. Therefore, this thesis contributes to the research on the effect of payment methods on millennials’ purchase behavior by exploring millennials in the context of clothing e-commerce in Sweden.   Purpose: The purpose of the thesis is to understand how electronic payment methods influence purchase behavior of millennials in Sweden in the clothing e-commerce.    Method: The study follows interpretivism philosophy due to integrating human interest and meaning. For a more in-depth understanding, the research used qualitative methods by conducting individual in-depth semi-structured interviews. The data was collected by fifteen millennials in Sweden and analyzed within the thematic analysis.   Conclusion: The results show that payment methods tend to influence millennials in Sweden differently depending on several factors such as trust, ease of use, and time consumption. The findings showed that the easier it is to use the payment method, the faster and smoother it is for millennials to complete the purchase. Moreover, when the website is organized and well-designed, there is a higher demand for purchasing from it, which leads to trust in the website and the operated payment methods in it to a higher extent. Hence, establishing the trust and credibility of the selected payment method was one of the essential points of the purchasing process. Additionally, certainty, reliability, and suspiciousness were highly taken into consideration when purchasing products from countries other than Sweden, as their operating payment methods vary significantly.

The aim of the thesis: to analyse the financial payments of business enterprises and to provide recommendations on a single payment system in EU countries. The trends in the area of IT growth and market competition make enterprises change their internal processes and make use of contemporary digital instruments. Shift of financial e-payments into the cyberspace in financial activities of business enterprises is a very important move stimulating the development of digital and competitive economy. Dealing with issues related to e-payments, EU offers a number of solutions how to prevent and to solve the problems. One of the solutions is a three-stage creation of a single payment area in EU countries: development, implementation and connection. The stage of connection must be completed by December 2010. By then all EU countries must ensure use of the single payment system both for local and international transfers. The goal of such system is to solve the problems of EU countries related to cross-border financial payments, so that e-payments in EU, i.e. payments by credit and debit cards, credit transfers, direct debit payments, etc., would be as easy, cheap and safe as the payments within borders of one member state are today. The problems of cross-border financial payments impede economic development on competitive conditions. Business enterprises of EU countries encounter a number of problems related to international transfers: incompatible architecture of computer systems... [to full text]

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is, on behalf of Periallo, to identify what it is that customers consider to be of greatest importance from a security perspective. This has been conducted from the answers given by consumers when asked a question concerning what they deem to be important from a security perspective when they shop from small e-commerce companies. In addition, a consideration has also been given to the security and payment solutions that are relevant to small e-commerce companies. An examination has also been conducted as to whether it is worth a small e-commerce company investing in a certification. In this work, payment solutions, security solutions and certifications have been identified by means of a critical literature review and a questionnaire, which is a quantitative method. The results of the study have shown that the majority of customers feel that it is safe to shop online. The most secure payment solution is considered to be an invoice, while the most popular payment methods are debit/credit cards and direct payment. In addition, the study has also shown that it is more important for a small and unknown e-commerce company to properly reflect upon the security solutions that they use against the large and well-known companies, even though, the majority of the participants in this study, were not aware of the security solutions available to protect companies and consumers.

Abstract:
E-payment paradigm in the context of fighting corruption and increasing transparency at the public-sector authority’s level is becoming more important than ever especially for Eastern Europe. The present research will address how an electronic payment system is affecting the diffusion of innovation among online public services, settling the challenges at the government level, providing solutions for diminishing the money laundering in the country and all other associated problems. Diffusion of innovations theory had been investigated by many scholars in different industries and countries. The research implication is to generate general knowledge by fulfilling the literature gap related to electronic payment systems in the public sector and diffusion of innovations. The research aim is to provide (1) an extensive literature review to gain familiarity principally on the diffusion of innovation theory, secondary on government electronic payment systems and cashless societies; (2) collect, explore and analyze empirical evidence related to the perceived attributes of diffusion of innovations theory and the rate of adoption of e-payment system designed for public services from the perspective of consumers, public service providers, and payment operators; (3) answer the research questions by the aid of the diffusion of innovation theory, and measure the rates of adoption of public e-payment systems by using an case study approach, the researchers analyzed the case of Moldova and the Governmental Payment Gateway MPay, one of the initiatives launched by the Public Institution e-Government Center.  The interpretivism research paradigm was adopted for the research, and an exploratory case study methodology is implemented to gain insights, familiarity with the subject, and acquire more knowledge in the concepts and theoretical frameworks that are related to the research problem and question.

Abstract:
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to explain and to create an understanding how incorporating an external actor to administer payment services has an effect on the value propositions offered to the consumer. Design/methodology/approach - The study adopts a qualitative approach, since the purpose is to explain and gain understanding about how incorporating an external actor to administer payment services has an effect on the value propositions offered to the consumer. The data has been collected through 13 interviews conducted with respondents from the consumer-, service provider- and payment intermediary segments. Findings - The results from the study illustrates that payment intermediaries do have an effect on the value propositions offered to consumers. However, since value is subjectively interpreted, the findings of this study indicate that incorporating a payment intermediary does not always result in a contribution of value. Furthermore, it is clear that it could influence consumer purchasing decision drastically in specific contexts. Research limitations - The study is conducted on Swedish e-commerce, which means generalizations between the countries cannot be made. Future research for other countries are needed for the findings to be applicable. Practical implications - Findings of this study indicate that incorporating a payment intermediary could influence consumer purchasing decision drastically, in a positive as well as in a negative manner, dependent on the context. Consumers prefer and expect to have a number of payment alternatives with the option to include or exclude an external actor if desired. Keywords - E-commerce, value proposition, value, payment intermediary, customer relationship management

Full text
Abstract:
The definition of Electronic commerce is the use of electronic transmission mediums to engage in the exchange, including buying and selling, of products and services requiring transportation, either physically or digitally, from location to location. Electronic commerce systems, including mobile e-commerce, are widely used since 1990. The number of world-wide Internet users tripled between 1993 and 1995 to 60 million, and by 2000 there were 250 million users. More than one hundred countries have Internet access. Electronic commerce, especial mobile e-commerce systems, allows their users to access a large set of traditional (for example, voice communications) and contemporary (for example, e-shop) services without being tethered to one particular physical location. With the increasing use of electronic service systems for security sensitive application (for example, e-shop) that can be expected in the future, the provision of secure services becomes more important. The dynamic mobile environment is incompatible with static security services. Electronic service access across multiple service domains, and the traditional access mechanisms rely on cross-domain authentication using roaming agreements starting home location. Cross-domain authentication involves many complicated authentication activities when the roam path is long. This limits future electronic commerce applications. Normally, there are three participants in an electronic service. These are users, service providers, and services. Some services bind users and service providers as well as services such as flight services; other services do not bind any participants, for instance by using cash in shopping services, everyone can use cash to buy anything in shops. Hence, depending on which parts are bound, there are different kinds of electronic services. However, there is no scheme to provide a solution for all kinds of electronic services. Users have to change service systems if they want to apply different kind of electronic services on the Internet. From the consumer's point of view, users often prefer to have a total solution for all kinds of service problems, some degree of anonymity with no unnecessary cross authentications and a clear statement of account when shopping over the Internet. There are some suggested solutions for electronic service systems, but the solutions are neither total solution for all kinds of services nor have some degree of anonymity with a clear statement of account. In our work, we build a bridge between existing technologies and electronic service theory such as e-payment, security and so on. We aim to provide a foundation for the improvement of technology to aid electronic service application. As validation, several technologies for electronic service system design have been enhanced and improved in this project. To fix the problems mentioned above, we extend our idea to a ticket based access service system. The user in the above electronic service system has to pay when s/he obtains service. S/He can pay by traditional cash (physical cash), check, credit or electronic cash. The best way to pay money for goods or services on the Internet is using electronic cash. Consumers, when shopping over the Internet, often prefer to have a high level of anonymity with important things and a low level with general one. The ideal system needs to provide some degree of anonymity for consumers so that they cannot be traced by banks. There are a number of proposals for electronic cash systems. All of them are either too large to manage or lack flexibility in providing anonymity. Therefore, they are not suitable solutions for electronic payment in the future. We propose a secure, scalable anonymity and practical payment protocol for Internet purchases. The protocol uses electronic cash for payment transactions. In this new protocol, from the viewpoint of banks, consumers can improve anonymity if they are worried about disclosure of their identities. An agent, namely anonymity provider agent provides a higher anonymous certificate and improves the security of the consumers. The agent will certify re-encrypted data after verifying the validity of the content from consumers, but with no private information of the consumers required. With this new method, each consumer can get the required anonymity level. Electronic service systems involve various subsystems such as service systems, payment systems, and management systems. Users and service providers are widely distributed and use heterogeneous catalog systems. They are rapidly increasing in dynamic environments. The management of these service systems will be very complex. Whether systems are successful or not depends on the quality of their management. To simplify the management of e-commerce systems \cite{Sandhu97}, we discuss role based access control management. We define roles and permissions in the subsystems. For example, there are roles TELLER, AUDITOR, MANAGER and permissions teller (account operation), audit operation, managerial decision in a bank system. Permissions are assigned to roles such as permission teller is assigned to role TELLER. People (users) employed in the bank are granted roles to perform associated duties. However, there are conflicts between various roles as well as between various permissions. These conflicts may cause serious security problems with the bank system. For instance, if permissions teller and audit operation are assigned to a role, then a person with this role will have too much privilege to break the security of the bank system. Therefore, the organizing of relationships between users and roles, roles and permissions currently requires further development. Role based access control (RBAC) has been widely used in database management and operating systems. In 1993, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) developed prototype implementations, sponsored external research, and published formal RBAC models. Since then, many RBAC practical applications have been implemented, because RBAC has many advantages such as reducing administration cost and complexity. However, there are some problems which may arise in RBAC management. One is related to authorization granting process. For example, when a role is granted to a user, this role may conflict with other roles of the user or together with this role; the user may have or derive a high level of authority. Another is related to authorization revocation. For instance, when a role is revoked from a user, the user may still have the role. To solve these problems, we present an authorization granting algorithm, and weak revocation and strong revocation algorithms that are based on relational algebra. The algorithms check conflicts and therefore help allocate the roles and permissions without compromising the security in RBAC. We describe the applications of the new algorithms with an anonymity scalable payment scheme. In summary, this thesis has made the following major contributions in electronic service systems: 1. A ticket based global solution for electronic commerce systems; A ticket based solution is designed for different kinds of e-services. Tickets provide a flexible mechanism and users can check charges at anytime. 2. Untraceable electronic cash system; An untraceable e-cash system is developed, in which the bank involvement in the payment transaction between a user and a receiver is eliminated. Users remain anonymous, unless she/he spends a coin more than once. 3. A self-scalable anonymity electronic payment system; In this payment system, from the viewpoint of banks, consumers can improve anonymity if they are worried about disclosure of their identities. Each consumer can get the required anonymity level. 4. Using RBAC to manage electronic payment system; The basic structure of RBAC is reviewed. The challenge problems in the management of RBAC with electronic payment systems are analysed and how to use RBAC to manage electronic payment system is proposed. 5. The investigation of recovery algorithms for conflicting problems in user-role assignments and permission-role assignments. Formal authorization allocation algorithms for role-based access control have developed. The formal approaches are based on relational structure, and relational algebra and are used to check conflicting problems between roles and between permissions.

Abstract:
With the technological development of e-commerce and the increasing necessity to use online transactions, more and more online electronic payments systems have appeared to meet global demand. Furthermore, user acceptance of these kinds of systems is different for individuals in different cultures, and culture could be a factor that has great potential impact on predictions of user acceptance. The world has evolved to a degree where transactions occur between different cultural environments. This study aims to provide an understanding of how culture affects users’ intentions of electronic payment systems. Based on the purpose of this study, a questionnaire has been conducted in the interest of collecting data for statistical purposes. To make more sense about the results, a case study on PayEx (an electronic payment system) in Linnaeus University has been conducted through analysing twenty users’ interview records. Finally, this study expands on user acceptance research through looking at the role of culture and social influence. In practice, the results of this study give the thought for accurate forecasting of user acceptance towards electronic payment systems with considering cultural influence.

In 1990s, internet service started to release to public domain, and it was rapidly widespread in the whole world. Many e-commerce giants, such as eBay, Amazon or Yahoo, opened online shopping malls, and they thoroughly overwhelmed the retail industry in these twenty years. In America, the online consumers used to provide their personal privacy for identity checking through the online credit card payment processing. However, the more online stores they visited, the more personal information unveiled on the internet. That’s why so many internet frauds popped up in online shopping. These circumstances gave PayPal a chance to provide collection and payment transfer services for online users to prevent credit card frauds in America. In 1999, PayPal started up the third party payment services for e-commerce industry, and provide secured transaction services for C2C online auction buyers. PayPal settles the dispute from buyers to sellers, and builds up the return policy for online shopping. The third party payment industry sustains the growth potential for e-commerce enterprises in 2000s. Compared with PayPal, Alipay was established in 2004 for the development of e-commerce ecosystem of Alibaba Group. Theoretically, Alipay reconstituted the business strategy of PayPal and embedded distinct deployments in terms of the macroeconomics conditions in China. After financial tsunami, many industries in China suffer serious overcapacity problem resulted from 4 trillion economic stimulus program during the period 2009~2010. Many non-performing loans tried to refinance through shadow banking system, and this phenomenon led to the spur in Shibor rate in 2013. Alipay grabbed the chance, and released Yu’E Bao (Money Market Fund) services. Yu’E Bao drove the profit from interbank deposit appraised by Shibor rate. Moreover, Alibaba applies the banking license in 2014, and aims to provide online wealth management for those who are not capable to acquire financial services from conventional bank. All the evidences show that Alipay try to carve out a tailored business strategy different from PayPal, and this master thesis contributes to the analysis on the evolvement of third party payment industry.

In this thesis, I will complete the plan of unfinished part for online checking micro-payment system in the mobile environment which Min-Jea Gau participates in ITRI including the purchase and retrieval of e-coins to accomplish the whole architecture of the electronic payment system. The e-coins used in the electronic payment system are implemented according to the United States’ Patent “Electronic coin stick with potential for future added value”. However, hash chain used in the patent has a potential risk during the transaction process and the other realistic environment consideration. Therefore, it is certainly difficulty for the electronic payment system applying on the current mobile telecommunication environment. To temporize tendency of current electronic transaction environment and development of mobile telecommunication and WAP, supposing that the electronic transaction security has achieved the certain degree under the wired environment with SSL and PKI protection and the wireless environment with WTLS and WPKI protection, I will propose a mobile e-payment system protocol let the user perform electronic transaction with mobile telecommunication in any place at any time, and also meet the requirement of micro payments and mobile payments to achieve the possibility of mobile e-commerce.

With the advent of the information age, e-commerce as an international business model, has increasingly depended on information technology. Giving customers a broad range of payment options is essential for delivering a great customer experience in e-commerce. Therefore, the modes of payment is critical for a business. Today, there are many ways to accept payments, including mobile POS systems, credit and debit card terminals, and online payment gateways. Accepting a range of credit cards and digital wallets (online payment methods) will bring a wider customer. Taiwan, with it's mobile phone penetration rate was over 100% years ago and e-commerce maturity degree is considered excellent, however, has been slower to adopt mobile payment than China and USA,especially in third-party payment. There is a myriad of third-party payment solutions all over the world. This paper primarily based on the comparison of legal regulations regarding the third-party payment in USA, Japan, China and Taiwan. Case studies of some of the best known mobile payments such as PayPal, Alipay, and M-Pesa in Kenya are presented. This research also examines factors that influence the use of third-party payment as a payment solution in Taiwan.

With rapid development of e-commerce, buying and paying habits are thoroughly being converteded from conventional ones. Today's consumers use all kinds of mobile devices overwheilmingly in their daily lives (Adopting mobile payment is to complete transaction via virtual chanels) so while choosing mobile payment they will be more aware of the risk than they shop in physique stores. With this factor will affect consumers' attidude and intentions to use mobile payment. This study is basically composed with two major thories of TAM and UTAUT to provide a wider understanding about users' expectation toward mobile payment. WIth adding two more concepts of e-commerce security and trust and danger toward in the virtual world helps to fathom how they affect users' attitude and intentions. The study result shows that network security is the most concern for users to adopt mobile payment. As long as network security is securely encaanced to eliminate uncertainty for users and operation interfeces are more user-friendly, consumers will possess confidence to use mobile payment. Taiwan government and service providers should coopeate closely together to create a better mobile payment envrionment so it will bring more business opportunities and values.

Abstract:
Electronic Payment Systems (EPS) are gaining popularity all over the world. An EPS consists of many component technologies which facilitate cashless payments for services. The focus of this thesis is on device associated technologies that an end customer uses to initiate an e-payment for a particular service via a Payment Service Provider (PSP). A technology solution in an EPS is developed by a Payment Solution Developer (PSD). The market between a PSP and a PSD is a B2B market. A PSD must understand and develop that combination of technology and service which will successfully diffuse. The success of a PSP therefore depends a lot on what a PSD develops. A theoretical framework to measure diffusion of e-payment technologies, services and their combinations in the B2B market was developed and empirically assessed in this thesis. Two concepts namely concept of breadth and concept of spread were defined. The concept of breadth and spread were applied to e-payment technologies, services and their combinations. The derived concepts namely technology breadth, service breadth, technology spread, service spread and technology-service combination spread were defined and measured. We then extended the concept of breadth to understand utilization of technologies and services within an EPS. Set theory was used to describe the framework. A sample of 45 EPS was compiled from various sources. This secondary data of EPS consisted of 8 technologies and 16 services. The 8 technologies are Interactive Voice Response (IVR), text messaging using Short Messaging Service (SMS), text messaging using Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD), mobile internet using Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), mobile application, Near Field Communication (NFC), Personal Computer (PC) internet and smart card. The 16 services are retail shopping payment, banking, health payment, insurance payment, mobile bill payment, mobile recharge, money transfer, movie ticket booking, parking fee payment, restaurant payment, payment at sports/swimming club, toll payment, transportation payment, tuition fee payment, utilities payment, and vending machine payment. Three categories of PSPs namely core payment service providers (n=18), non-core payment service providers (n=12) and merchants (n=15) were identified from the 45 EPS. Binomial proportion test was used to verify the concepts of breadth and spread. Spearman correlation was used to find correlation between the concept of breadth and spread of technologies and services. The 45 EPS in the sample were then grouped under three sub groups based on the categories of their PSPs. Binomial tests were used within each sub group to understand the preferences of technologies, services and their combinations by each category. The results verified that certain e-payment technologies possess more breadth i.e., capability to deliver many e-payment services and certain e-payment services possess more breadth i.e., delivered by many e-payment technologies. A difference in diffusion i.e., spread of technologies, services and their combinations were observed. Details of these differences are discussed in this thesis for technologies, services and their combinations. A positive correlation was observed between the concept of breadth and spread. Specialization of technologies, services and their combinations within categories of PSPs were observed. Variations in utilization of technologies and services by EPS were observed.

Along with the sound and popular development of the Internet infrastructure, which allow the daily transaction volume of E-commerce soar and change everyday life and shopping habit of the people worldwide. According to Financial Supervisory Commission R.O.C. (Taiwan), the E-Commerce transaction volume of Taiwan was Eight Hundred Eighty Billion NT dollars in 2014. Such tremendous amount forced the commission to pay close attention on the logistics and cash flow order, while the transaction volume on E-commerce implied the mutual faith and trust on both parties, thus the third-party payment was invented as a new way. Relatively speaking, the mistrust to transaction of E-commerce of the two parties will disappear when the transaction is done through the third-party payment institution. Therefore, the supervision of the third-party payment institution is important. Taiwan started to enact the “Act Governing Electronic Payment Institutions” to control the third-party payment institutions in 2015. This essays aims to explore the mode of the third-party payment institution to understand the degree of trust of the consumers to the third-party payment institution, further, to analyze the development and supervision of the third-party payment on E-commerce at China and USA, the biggest transaction volume on E-commerce, as well as the demand for economic development and legal regulations in Taiwan so as to offer advice on the third-party payment regulations, hoping the governing departments will treat those institutions and the legal problems need to be solved for consumers more seriously so as to guarantee the rights of both sides and to enhance the economic development.

Abstract:
Nowadays, 31% of the population worldwide still classified as Underbanked. These do not have access to mainstream financial services or institutions, and this is a problem that especially haunts the emerging markets. As the mobile phone penetration rate is tremendous, financial companies are investing in the development of mobile banking solutions to solve this issue. M-Pesa is one of those solutions that currently is being developed and deployed in several of these markets as in Tanzania, Mozambique, Democratic Republic of the Congo and others. The appearing of solutions like M-Pesa allowed its users to have an online bank account and perform operations as deposit, transfer or withdraw money. Despite the innovation and these solutions give them the possibility of pay taxes, bills or services, they continue excluded from the online shopping world. This exclusion happens because payment gateways are not prepared to support users that do not use the traditional banking systems. Online Payments platform aims to allow M-Pesa users to shop online. This platform is an online payment gateway that recurring to a third-party payment processor allows M-Pesa users to purchase on online stores. Is part of the prototype a web platform, that is composed by the following portals: i) merchant; ii) developer; iii) checkout; iv) documentation and v) demo and the Android M-Pesa application that was used to add support to new features for the Online Payments platform. This platform is a proof of concept developed during an internship at WIT Software, that is the company responsible for the development process of the M-Pesa mobile applications. Finally, as far as the final phase of the project is concerned, have been obtained proof of concept thought which can see that it is possible to implement it.

With the development of IT, e-commerce and international trade, e-payment becomes an indispensable payment trend in a modern society. E-payment has been developed and introduced in many developed countries for a long time, but it is still the phase of developing in Vietnam. E-payment in Vietnam has been applied for more than 10 years, marking a significant development in recent years, in which personal innovativeness should be mentioned as an impulse factor. Therefore, the primary purpose of this study is to examine the factors affecting to the adoption of e-payment using in Vietnam and use personal innovativeness as a moderator to those relationships. The study based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) with two important factors: perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness, along with two other factors: perceived risk and information on e-payment system, and those factors are predicted to have huge impact on the e-payment adoption in Vietnam. The study uses a quality approach to survey 370 Vietnamese users in two main cities Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh. The results support almost hypotheses, however, the role of personal innovativeness as a moderator does not clearly, but it defines that personal innovativeness in IT tends to effect directly on e-payment use more than moderator effect that is out of our predicted. This study exploits and analysis the process of e-payment adoption in Vietnam, a developing country case. We expect to provide bankers and government with more information about the adoption of e-payment in Vietnam. Discussions and suggestion are explained the results in research and practice.

Vietnam is a developing country with the population of nearly 90 millions. E-payment has been applied for over 10 years in Vietnam, marking a significant development for society in general and in banking particularly.
