Abstract:
Some time early in 50 B.C. the two elder sons of M. Calpurnius Bibulus the Roman governor of Syria were killed in Egypt by milites Gabiniani, Roman soldiers left there by A. Gabinius – an earlier governor of Syria. What Bibulus' sons were doingin Egypt is a mystery, partly because we do not know how old they were; all we know about them is that they were outstandingly gifted or outstandingly beautiful, or both. The soldiers had been left in Egypt (basically as mercenaries) by Gabinius in 54 B.C. when hehad been bribed by Ptolemy XII Auletes to restore him to the throne from which he had been driven by his exasperated subjects. Why these particular troops took it into their heads to murder Bibulus' sons is another mystery, which we will touch upon, but our main concern here is the effect which the death of his sons had on Bibulus. Our contention is simply that the incident is part of a rarely documented example from the classical world of a clear mental breakdown in one prominent individual. In Bibulus' case it took the form of paralysing shock, followed by grief, depression, and a frenzy of sleepless activity in which he eventually wore himself to death. To understand how this operated in the way it did in this particular case, we need to understand Bibulus the man and his personal history.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to determining the peculiarities of parent-child interaction of mothers with foster and biological sons and daughters. The main hypothesis was the assumption that there are reliable differences in the interaction with children depending on their gender and depending on the form of parenting of mothers. The study included 218 mothers – 22 to 71 years (M=43.95; SD=10.01), of which foster mothers n=112 – 27 to 71 years (M=50.40; SD=7.69) and biological mothers n=106 – 22 to 55 years (M=37.32; SD=7.46). The mothers’ groups were conventionally divided into 4 subgroups, the first included foster mothers who described their interaction with foster sons (n=48), sons’ ages 3 to 17.5 years (M=12.25; SD=3.87); the second included foster mothers who described their interaction with foster daughters (n=64), daughters’ ages 4 to 17 years (M=12.84 SD=3.24); the third included biological mothers who described their interaction with their biological sons (n=52), their ages 2.9 to 19 years (M=10.61; SD=4.80); the fourth included native mothers who described their interaction with their biological daughters (n=54), the daughters 4 to 17 years (M=10.07; SD=4.49). The results of the study revealed significant differences with regard to foster sons, with whom foster mothers will be more strict than foster daughters. Compared to biological daughters and sons in biological mothers’ interactions with them, foster mothers in relation to their foster sons and daughters will exhibit more controlling behavior, inconsistency in educational tactics, and consider themselves more authoritative parents. The results of the study show that parent-child interaction in biological and foster mothers, depends not so much on the gender of the children, but on the form of their parenthood.

Abstract:
Our research presents some ideas about composing musical spaces. This study includes the intentional use of the perceived sound qualities in sound construction, and, by the consequence, in musical composition. Our research is in the intersection between the sound as a physical phenomenon, the spatial sensations created by the auditory perception of some sound proprieties, and the musical composition of sound spaces. We develop the idea of a sound entity that we can compose from its microstructure to the macrostructure. We conceive it by means of an analogical thinking about the tangible world objects and the auditory sound sensations. We consider the ideas of volume, form and matter, positions and movements of the material objects. We used these ideas as metaphor to conceive sound entities integrated into and musical composed spaces. The conception of the sound entity as a group of heteroclite elements ; il make possible the conception of operational networks. The composer can use these networks for sound manipulations in his compositional work

Abstract:
The focus of the research concerns the manifestations of the educational desire rising in parents couples with pre-adolescents and adolescents sons. It’s important to investigate in this direction because desires are present in the parental role, and influence the daily practice at home. From the theory about family, parenting and desire, the research design refers to an ecological and interpretative paradigm; then the research is explorative, empirical and qualitative. The sample is compound of 6 sets of parents which was proposed semi-structured interview designed to investigate the family reality from the parent's point of view; the resulting data are processed with an analysis of the content and converge in 4 thematic areas: the desires of the children, of the parents, the organizational aspects of family and education of parents. In the texts are identified a series of significant excerpts that make the word of the parent susceptible to be interpreted again. In particular, word becomes visual medium: it proposes a similar meaning to its literal but that can be transposed graphically. The porosity of the language allows you to read the images produced as a sign; it can indicate or symbolize aspects of desire concerning the role of the parent. The representation thus allows to open the research to a new phase in which you follow the Art-Based Research references, in particular a method called Photo elicitation; it develops into two forms, here both articulated in a conversation between researcher and couple of parents. The image becomes stimulus in the conversation. In the first, the researcher provides images chosen by him on the basis of expressions emerged from the individual interviews; this was the case with the sample of parents have indicated above. In the second case four couples of parents choose images for themselves. The resulting data were read by analyzing hermeneutics and then arranged with an analysis of the content. Compared to the overall results, it emerges a complex series and varied manifestations of desire. Beyond a shared desire for happiness that parents recognize for their sons, other desires appears and they that move along a continuum between autonomy and limitation in the family relationships. It’s important set up spaces that can put parents in a reflective position about their own desire, in the perspective of a more coherent and solid educational activity in the family.

Abstract:
Nowadays the importance of international relationships has increased considerably. In order to reach a better competence in oral production, it is important to specify precisely the context in which the learner evolves. In this way, the teacher can propose the most suitable training taking into consideration the personality and the communication needs of each student. Our multidisciplinary research is dedicated to the didactical aspect of Français Langue Etrangère (French as Foreign Language) taught to adult Italian students. The purpose is to assess the influence of socio-cultural and linguistic situations on metaphonologic competences in mother tongue and on the capability of repeating phonetically French sentences. In Italy, in fact, there is still a wide variety of dialects and this environment influences the oral production. Forty-eight adults were asked to complete a written open-ended questionnaire and were subjected to two tests of oral production. Collected data was used to study how languages were perceived from linguistic and aesthetic points of view, and as a tool for social communication; oral tests evaluated the metaphonologic competence and the phonetic perception. Subjects came from the cities of Padua and Naples, where the influence of dialect is easily perceivable, and were chosen depending on their use of dialect, their attitude towards it and their experience with the French language. The three variables used to classify the subjects (a-geographical origin, b-linguistic profile, c-experience in French) led to confirmation of the following hypothesis: a – personal and social perception, as well as the individual competence, show a variation depending on the geographical origin; b – plurilingual subjects with more affection for their regional language show a worse metaphonologic competence and ability of repetition; c – the quality of French sentence repetitions relates to the individual experience in French, whereas the metaphonologic care in execution was similar among the different groups. These observations lead to interesting prospects, both for the methodology of pluridisciplinary investigation and for the awareness that in the didactic activity concerning foreign languages the learner is to be considered a “communicating being and social actor” (Charaudeau, 1983).

Gans, Michael Moses. "Fathers, sons and the holo-ghost: reframing post-Shoah male Jewish identity in Doron Rabinovici's "Suche nach M"." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/4268.

Abstract:
The enduring, mythical and antisemitic figure of Ahasuerus is central to the unraveling and reframing of post-Shoah Jewish identity in Rabinovici’s novel Suche nach M for it serves as the mythological color palette from which Rabinovici draws his characters and, to extend that metaphor, how the Jews have been immortalized in European culture. There is no escape in Suche nach M. When painting the Jew, both Jews and non-Jews can only use brush strokes of color from the Christian-created palette of the mythic, wandering Jew, Ahasuerus, who is stained in the blood of deicide, emasculated, treacherous, and evil. He is the constitutional “Other.” By deploying Urie Bronfenbrenner’s (Bio) Ecological Systems Theory, the Mythic Jew and the Ikhud (“Fusion”) Models that represent an evolving psychosocial environment combined with personal reflection, this thesis explores how Suche nach M invokes yet critiques the process of Jewish male identity formation in postwar Austria.

Abstract:
The impact of industrialization and globalization brought great challenges and transformations to the rural and inland regions of the country. In Portugal there is higher population density along coastal areas as well as a bipolarization of it around the two main metropolitan areas, Porto and, especially, Lisbon. In a time where this is a reality and inland areas in Portugal are witnessing a major decrease of its active population, it is also possible to spot a phenomenon rising in parallel: the emergence of music, arts and cultural festivals occurring across the country, including in inland regions. According to APORFEST - Associação Portuguesa de Festivais de Música - from 2016 the number of music festivals held across national territory grew more than 23%, going from 249 in 2016 to 311 in 2018. The purpose of this thesis is to tackle the trend of the growing sector of music festivals in Portugal, and, at the same time, addressing existing realities such as the underdevelopment of inland regions by focusing on the case of BONS SONS, a music festival and a cultural initiative that revitalizes the region. The goal is to present the festival in all its dimensions, to use it as an example for other initiatives as such and to contribute to its development. Firstly, a contextualisation of the situation will be presented. Then, a group of questions will be put together, whose answers lie in the information provided by the contextualisation, in the interviews held and in the literature review on marketing and other necessary concepts. Later, a resolution proposal will be provided as well as an animation plan with suggestions to discuss and work in class.

Dent, Jacqueline Elizabeth May. "Exploring the construction of white male identity in selected novels by J.M. Coetzee." Diss., 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/1583.

Full text
Abstract:
Coetzee's own experience of living in apartheid South Africa provides the backdrop for novels infused with sardonic irony and rich metaphoric systems. In modes of metafiction that emphasize the destructive and violent nature of language, he optimizes his unique oeuvre to interrogate global, national and domestic power relations. This dissertation relies on psychoanalytical theories that examine microstructures of power within the individual, and in his domestic domain. Each of Coetzee's chief protagonists carries a secret related to a dysfunctional mother/son relationship. This hampers their psychosocial dynamics, their masculinity and sexuality. As they respectively strive toward an elusive new life they confront patriarchal power structures that speak on behalf of individuals, '[whose] descent into powerlessness [is] voluntary' (Coetzee 2007: 4-5). Coetzee's constructed white males perform their several identity roles in milieux that span divergent phases of colonial history. His critique points to white patriarchal hegemonic ideological discourses that bespeak the self/other dichotomy in a postcolonial world where the language of dominance supports an oppressive status quo.

Abstract:
Abstract Early years of childhood, for boys as well as girls, would have been spent at home with the mother, and there is no reason to doubt that, generally speaking, a strong bond existed between a mother and her children. 1 But while Athenians recognized the affective power of the maternal bond, a mother played only a small role in determining a childߣs public or private identity. So, while Aristotle claims that mothers love their children more than fathers, he still asserts that the child is part of its father until it reaches a certain age. 2 In the case of widowhood or divorce, children of a marriage usually remained in their fatherߣs house while their mother returned to her father's house. 3 If a man had had a daughter but no sons, the sons of his daughter (who in this situation was called an epikleros) would inherit his property, but they were only considered to be the true continuance of their maternal grandfather's line if one of his close male relatives (e.g. his brother or first cousin) were the father.4 A woman was not thought capable of perpetuating her fatherߣs line without an infusion of the familyߣs male principle in her offspring. In such a culture, theories of reproduction were bound to emphasize the importance of the male component over the female. In the realm of mythology this emphasis took the form of stories

This chapter chronicles the emergence of a ‘sons of the soil’ movement following the tumultuous events of partition. Partition massively altered the demography of Sindh, with the exodus of Hindus and arrival of Muslim migrants (Muhajirs) from India. The Muhajirs quickly dominated the urban centers, administration and economy of Sindh. This period also saw the beginning of Sindh’s struggle for autonomy as the Centre separated Karachi from Sindh and later merged Sindh with One Unit—the new mega-province that incorporated the whole of West Pakistan. The removal of Sindhi language from public life in the province exacerbated Sindhi feelings of alienation. These developments led to the ‘sons of the soil’ movement of G. M. Syed, which adopted various strategies to resist the hegemony of the Centre.

Abstract:
Abstract Critics have generally recognized Sons and Lovers, Lawrence’s third novel, as one of the author’s most finely observed and moving works. It has nevertheless provoked controversy over the question of aesthetic control: does the novel lose command of tone and point of view? Many readers have noticed the contradictions between the dramatic presentation of the characters and the interpretive commentary on them. As H. M. Daleski observes, “The weight of hostile comment which Lawrence directs against Morel is balanced by the unconscious sympathy with which he is presented dramatically, while the overt celebration of Mrs Morel is challenged by the harshness of the character in action. “1 Mark Schorer indeed proclaims the novel a technical failure because of such contradictions; the “psychological tension, “ he believes, “disrupts the form “ of the novel.2

Abstract:
Known worldwide in hunting dog circles, Er Shelley was a trainer extraordinaire. From 1921 until his death in 1957, he lived in Columbus, Mississippi. He specialized in bird dogs—pointers and setters—and trained foxhounds. He achieved acclaim as a hunting dog trainer, field trials handler, and author. He trained famous dogs: the pointer Hard Cash, Count Gladstone, and the English setter, Pioneer, who won the National Bird Dog Championship. In 1906, Shelley won the Westminster Kennel Club cup for “Best Exhibit of Field Trial Setters.” In Africa with internationally known sportsman Paul Rainey, their safari killed twenty-seven lions. Many became “the Rainey group” after their donation to the American Museum of Natural History. Two leopard cubs were donated to the Bronx Zoo. Based on these experiences, Shelley self-published Hunting Big Game with Dogs in Africa. In 1921, Putnam & Sons published what hunting aficionados consider a classic, Bird Dog Training Today and Tomorrow. For books, magazines, and newspapers, Pruitt photographed Shelley and his dogs. Shelley oversaw hunting trips for the president of Standard Oil of New York, Herbert Pratt, who had a plantation in Ridgeland, South Carolina. Besides training dogs, Shelley pioneered in dog food manufacturing—with “Very Best Dog Food,” distributed nationally.

Abstract:
Abstract The problem of the ages of the ancestors in Genesis 5 and 11 is hinted at by Josephus in an intriguing aside: “The reader should not examine the ages of the individuals at death, for their lifetimes extended into those of their sons and of their sons’ descendants, but should confine his attention to their dates of birth” (Ant 1.88; trans. Thackeray). If one examines the ages of these individuals at death, one discovers the scandal that in G (and its congeners) Methuselah survives the flood by 14 years (see §4.2 on Josephus’s biblical Vorlage). Further, as Eusebius of Caesarea first observed in his Chronicle, the chronlogies of Genesis 5 and 11 diverge significantly among M, S, and G. Jerome notes in his Hebrew Questions on Genesis: “this is a celebrated question, and one which has been publicly aired in argument by all the churches” (Hayward 1995: 35). For Jerome, this problem provided a prime opportunity to argue for the hebraica veritas, against the sins of G. Augustine defended G as inspired Holy Writ, though even he felt compelled to admit: “One thing remains certain: Methuselah did not live on after the Flood” (City of God 15.11; trans. Bettenson [Penguin]), reluctantly following Min this instance.

Another Iunia was married (?late 60s/early 50s) to M. Aemilius Lepidus; they had two sons, Marcus and Quintus. She was still alive in 30. The other daughter (died AD 22) married C. Cassius pr. 44. His parents are unknown. If he had no prior wife, Iunia probably married him by 59 and bore a son (known to have become adult 15 March 44) c.58. In 49–48 Cassius was a Pompeian admiral, but Caesar forgave him. He was a man of warmth and charm.

While Irish newspapers and magazines such as the Nation and the Dublin University Magazine featured a variety of both ‘original’ and reprinted translations, a number of Irish printers and publishers also contributed to the dissemination of translated works. This chapter illustrates the role played by translators and other actors in the process such as printers, publishers and booksellers. Throughout the nineteenth century, Irish printers and publishers such as Richard Cross, James Duffy and M. H. Gill and Sons contributed to the dissemination of what they identified as ‘good reading’ – an undertaking which also involved a careful selection of ‘good translations’. Translation in the nineteenth-century Irish literary marketplace was therefore inextricably interconnected with discourses of morality, education, and national virtues.

The Gulf of Kalamita is located in the Black Sea off the west coast of the Crimea and is known to be a major recreational area. However, in the last 30 years, its famous sandy beaches have drastically degraded. Degradation of sandy beaches was expressed in erosion of the coastal line (30-70 m) and reduction of the total area of beaches; disappearance of sand in a number of ar-eas in the near-shore zone and openings of marl; sharp increase of fragments of limestone in the composition of beaches. In the last 60 years, the level of the Black Sea has risen by 14 cm. Only this factor, as the calculations show, has caused about 15 mln m3 deficiency of deposits. Accord-ing to direct observations, shoreline response to changes in the sea level at the inter-annual scale changes comproses 0,3 m per 1 cm. Climate changes in trajectories of passing cyclones have resulted in a 2-3 times increase in storm activity over the past 30 years. The contribution of natural factors into the shoreline changes do not exceed 10-15% according to our estimates. The main contribution is related to the background and point anthropogenic impacts. The first group includes overall reduction of sediment in the sea due to construction of reservoirs, cliffs closing with concrete embankments, reducing populations of benthic mollusks for various rea-sons, etc. The second group includes construction of hydraulic structures which do not address lithodynamics peculiarities in particular stretches of coastline.

Abstract:
In May 2004, the Global Threat Reduction Initiative agreement was signed by the governments of the United States and the Russian Federation. The goal of this initiative is to minimize, in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, the existing threat of misuse of nuclear and radioactive materials for terrorist purposes, particularly highly enriched uranium (HEU), fresh and spent nuclear fuel (SNF), and plutonium, which have been stored in a number of countries. Within the framework of the initiative, HEU materials and SNF from research reactors of Russian origin will be transported back to the Russian Federation for reprocessing/liquidation. The program is designated as the Russian Research Reactor Fuel Return (RRRFR) Program and is similar to the U.S. Foreign Research Reactor Spent Nuclear Fuel Acceptance Program, which is underway for nuclear materials of United States origin. These RRRFR activities are carried out under the responsibilities of the respective ministries (i.e., U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Russian Federation Rosatom). The Czech Republic and the Nuclear Research Institute Rez, plc (NRI) joined Global Threat Reduction Initiative in 2004. During NRI’s more than 50 years of existence, radioactive and nuclear materials had accumulated and had been safely stored on its grounds. In 1995, the Czech regulatory body, State Office for Nuclear Safety (SONS), instructed NRI that all ecological burdens from its past activities must be addressed and that the SNF from the research reactor LVR-15 had to be transported for reprocessing. At the end of November 2007, all these activities culminated with the unique shipment to the Russian Federation of 527 fuel assemblies of SNF type EK-10 (enrichment 10% U235) and IRT-M (enrichment 36% and 80% U235) and 657 irradiated fuel rods of EK-10 fuel, which were used in LVR-15 reactor.

Abstract:
This work discusses the importance of the site in the morphological structuring of urban centres. Studies on the implantation of the city of Belo Horizonte, located in the state of Minas Gerais Brazil, show that the occupation of the city occurred initially in the valleys. This was due to the favourable conditions of the topography, which allowed an orthogonal layout in the central area. In spite of this, since the city’s foundation, the most rugged areas have been occupied by favelas, whose layout differed from the dominant pattern. As flat areas became scarce, the hilly regions, possessing long strips of land, were also subdivided and exploited due to their substantially lower land prices. Although the favelas sprung up spontaneously and the new settlements were planned, both had similarities in the layout of the streets which were adjusted to the steep contours and the geological conditions of the terrain. At the same time, the plot defined another configuration in the subdivisions, in which the building was occupied by only a single family and, in most cases, the building was separated from the street by high walls. As a consequence, the relationship between public and private space became severely compromised. In the case of the favelas, the formal inexistence of the plot is demonstrated in the juxtaposition of the dwellings, in which each residence is constructed above another in extremely confined space. The relationship with the street also differs in these places, since the first floor often freely connects to the street, integrating the dwelling with the public space and thus contributing to the social life of the community. This is furthermore in contrast to the previously noted walled environments characterising planned areas. The analysis of these parameters could profitably be utilised in new designs that appropriate some of the popular solutions better suited to the environment, and in turn, integrate them into public policy.References: FERREIRA, M. Abstract:
As Thermal/Infrared (TIR) sensors have become more advanced, they are being considered for Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) systems, in addition to the existing roster of sensors. A crucial step in the development of GNC systems is the testing of sensors, including analysis methods that utilise the sensor data. To expedite this process VIS image generation software like the Planet and Asteroid Natural Generation Utility (PANGU) [1] and Airbus's SurRender [2] are used to generate synthetic images representative of the kind of data that would be gathered. For spacecraft this was previously limited to the VIS spectral range and LiDAR, but as a result of the development in TIR sensors, methods of generating representative synthetic TIR images of spacecraft are now required to aid in development and testing. PANGU v6 added TIR simulations of planetary surfaces and spacecraft in 2021 [3]. This paper will summarize and review problems involved in generating representative TIR images of spacecraft using traditional rendering techniques and proposes a method of real-time image generation to simulate time-based effects. Traditional thermal analysis is performed using Lumped Parameter (LP) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) techniques that utilize standard heat transfer equations tailored for spacecraft in custom-made software tools like ESATAN-TMS. Modern engineering CAD software like SolidWorks can simulate thermal systems using modern FEA techniques, though few take into account the orbital nature of spacecraft and the resulting changes in thermal behaviour. For this reason, ESATAN's orbital module ensures it stands as one of the few tools available for directly simulating spacecraft thermal behaviour. To generate TIR images, we can adapt techniques from traditional thermal analysis software to more flexible rendering tools like PANGU, which generates representative images using efficient GPU-based rendering techniques over computationally expensive techniques like FEA. A stateless model was developed for PANGU v6.0, using traditional thermal analysis equations to compute TIR radiance in each simulated image [3]. However, there remain some discrepancies in the thermal profile, and images, generated using this technique [3], possibly because it functions without any consideration of changes that occur over more than a single frame. To more accurately simulate the thermal profile of real-world spacecraft, time and its effects on the thermal behaviour of the simulated spacecraft should be considered. While radiative and conductive properties define the ability of a material to transfer thermal energy, the thermal capacitance (a.k.a. inertia) of an object describes the rate at which it can do so. To assist in the approximation of the capacitance of a mesh CAD model, which describes the boundary surfaces of an object rather than defining the solid object itself, we can adapt traditional thermal analysis techniques. One possible method is to create a thermal mathematical model (TMM) [4] limited to the surface thermal properties, that could be used to simulate the approximate flow (conduction) of heat across the surface using node capacitance. The creation of a TMM of the surface of a model requires mesh stitching, i.e. joining together the meshes that make up a CAD model so that a point, which may be described multiple times in order to describe multiple polygons (e.g. the corner of a cube), may be represented as a single node. While not as accurate as describing the conduction of heat through a solid object, the approximation of surface conduction has the potential to increase the accuracy of generated images where conduction plays a significant effect, i.e. due to a rapid change of incoming radiation e.g. entry and exit of eclipse. This paper reports on the development of a new GPU-based renderer that aims to include the thermal behaviour of spacecraft over time in TIR image generation, in order to improve the representative quality of the images. Two techniques are being developed in the renderer: the first is a capacitance model that involves the creation of a TMM and the assignment of thermal properties to each node, to keep track of the temperature of each. The TMM created will be constructed using a mesh "stitching" technique, that creates a geometrically unique set of nodes that more accurately depicts physical properties. The second utilises the TMM to simulate conductive effects over edge nodes, calculating the conduction from one polygon to another. At each frame (i.e. time steps) the temperature and then radiance of each node is calculated using its thermal properties (i.e. emissivity, absorptivity and conductivity) and the previous temperature. The radiance is calculated in the GPU fragment shaders; ensuring that the temperatures passed to the GPU from the vertex shader are properly interpolated, allowing gradients across surfaces with differing node properties. The full paper will examine the quality of the prototype renderering system described above, and examine how valid and representative the generated images are using a traditional thermal simulation tool, ESATAN-TMS. Using this, we can create equivalent CAD models and use them to generate an overall thermal profile of a simple spacecraft in a known orbit. We can then compare this thermal profile to the surface temperature profile generated using the prototype developed, in order to evaluate how representative the images generated are compared to the stateless model currently in use within PANGU.
