Abstract:
In analogy to the definition of the halting problem K, an r.e. set A is called a diagonal iff there is a computable numbering ψ of the class of all partial recursive functions such that A = {i ∈ ω: ψi(i)↓} (in that case we say that A is the diagonal of ψ). This notion has been introduced in [10]. It captures all r.e. sets that can be constructed by diagonalization. It was shown that any nonrecursive r.e. T-degree contains a diagonal, that for any diagonal A there is an r.e. nonrecursive nondiagonal B ≤TA, and that there are r.e. degrees a such that any r.e. set from a is a diagonal. In §2 of the present paper we show that the property “A is a diagonal” is elementary lattice theoretic (e.l.t.). This result complements and generalizes previous results of Harrington and Lachlan, respectively. Harrington (see [16, XV. 1]) proved that the property of being the diagonal of some Gödelnumbering (i.e., of being creative) is e.l.t., and Lachlan [12] proved that the property of being a simple diagonal (i.e., of being simple and not hh-simple [10]) is e.l.t.In §§3 and 4 we study the position of diagonals and nondiagonals inside the lattice of r.e. sets. We concentrate on an important class of nondiagonals, generalizing the maximal and hemimaximal sets: the -maximal sets. Using the results from [6] we are able to classify the -maximal sets that can be obtained as halfs of splittings of hh-simple sets.

Abstract:
The most basic construction of an r.e. nonrecursive set—e.g. of the halting problem—proceeds by taking the diagonal of a recursive enumeration of all r.e. sets. We will answer the question of which r.e. sets can be constructed in this manner. If ψ is a computable numbering of some class of partial recursive functions, we define the diagonal of ψ to be the set Kψ ≔ {i ∈ ω ∣ ψi(i)↓}- It is well known that Kφ is creative if φ is a Gödelnumbering, and that for each creative set K there exists a Gödelnumbering φ such that K = Kφ. That is to say, the class of diagonals of Gödelnumberings is characterized as the class of creative sets. This class was shown to be elementary lattice theoretic (e.l.t.) by Harrington (see [So87, XV. 1.1]).We give a characterization of diagonals of arbitrary computable numberings of the class P1 of all partial recursive functions. To this end we introduce the notion of a semihyperhypersimple (shhs) set, which generalizes the notion of hyperhypersimplicity to nonsimple sets. It is shown that the diagonals of numberings of P1 are exactly the non-shhs sets. Then, properties of shhs sets are discussed. For example, for each nonrecursive r.e. set A there exists a nonrecursive shhs set B ≤TA, but not every r.e. T-degree contains a shhs set. These results build upon previous work by Downey and Stob [DSta].The question whether the property “shhs” is (elementary) lattice theoretic remains open. A positive answer would give both an analog of Harrington's result mentioned above, and a generalization of the well-known fact, due to Lachlan [La68], that hyperhypersimplicity is e.l.t. Therefore, we suspect that shhs sets turn out to be useful in the study of the lattice of r.e. sets.Previously, for several constructions from recursion theory the role of the underlying numbering of P1 was investigated; see Martin ([Ma66a] or [So87, V.4.1]) and Lachlan ([La75] or [Od89, III.9.2]) for Post's simple set, and Jockusch and Soare ([JS73]; cf. also [So87, XII.3.6, 3.7]) for Post's hypersimple set. However, only Gödelnumberings were considered. An explanation for the greater variety which arises when arbitrary numberings of P1 are admitted is provided by the fact that the index set of Gödelnumberings is less complex than the index set of all numberings of P1. The former is Σ1-complete; the latter is Π4-complete.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis forms part of the common Intelligent Transportation Systems which in turn are based on the application of telecommunication and Informatics (Telematics) to traffic management which belongs to the domain of Traveller Information. The principle identified problems are the lack of a common vocabulary of elements which use a well defined semantic description which permits obtaining the meaning (including the non-explicit) of each concept of rural traffic as well as obtaining information from different heterogeneous sources in an intuitive and simple way.Different aspects describe the actual problem related to the access and distribution of information:1. High volume of traffic information is distributed over different web sites. The main problem for a user who needs such information is to find such webs and handle the different ways of access and presentation2. On the other hand, the users need information of a different nature or type, and the storage of such information on a simple site would be too costly as well for maintenance.3. It is no possible to obtain any information if this information is not explicitbefore, After defining the existing problems and identifying the elements which could solve this situation, the present work focuses on those ITS-systems which provide traffic information to the user, its handling and exchange, in an efficient way between the elements which compose the architecture of traffic information systems, such as users applications and information providers.Different elements have been developed as an integral part of an architecture:1. Construction of an ontological infrastructure which domain is covered by road traffic information,2. A framework was defined for the conversion of conventional web portals to semantic web services (SWS),3. Extension of the existing methodology for the construction of ontologies based on ER model,4. A SWS matching algorithm was designed, implemented and evaluated which make maximal use of the capabilities of the ontologies of the service description, which constitute an improvement of the existing ones.5. A number of proposals were demonstrated which permits creation and handling of Semantic web services of road traffic information.

Abstract:
The implementation, by local collectivity, of a VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) in secondary schools and high school is not without consequences for the educational community daily activities. Our study aims to understand emerging uses by carry out a decomposition of the appropriation process. It also responds to an institutional command whose aim is turned toward the promotion and stimulation of the utilisation of this type of tool. Therefore, our objective is to create a model to understand which are VLE users and how is managed the transition between uses prescribed by the creators and observed behaviors. For its concretization, our model is built on a set of preliminary work.- The operating frame study based on interviews with prescribers and the analysis of the Lorraine VLE project specification chart.- The use frame study, on one hand, through uses counter measures from the CDC (Caisse des Dépôts group), on the other hand, by questionnaires upon which functions we report first uses and social representation of a VLE and his book-texts by students, teachers and parents. The model pattern, supported by a robust literature, is called: DAME (Dynamic Acceptance Model for Education). It was applied to a population of 3,100 students, 774 parents, 617 teachers and 44 staff members of school life. The results show in a first step, the importance given to "usefulness" and "usability" perceptions. To promote the adoption of a VLA, and therefore its acceptability in the daily teaching activities, it's crucial that its handling and its added value were associated with its use are fully perceived. In a second step, it seems necessary to take into account, the social network of the user, what we call in our model "social pressure", students and staff of school life being particularly responsive to it. In a third step, we observe that tool properties can generate what we designate by "instrumental pressure" which retroactively impact on previous variables. Due to repeated use, addiction to ENT may be installed when it becomes essential for the quality of his professional or learning activity, which is notably the case for two functionalities: text-book and information space. Nevertheless, our model shows that other factors can be able to explain uses; therefore, new research prospects can be expected. Finally, it seems clear, on the basis of our various surveys, that the main beneficiaries of VLE are mainly parents and students. But if both show strong interest for its use, they are confronted to the resistance of some teachers denouncing an overwork and an excessive transparency of uploaded information

Kleynhans, Ernst Lodewyk Johannes. "Unique challenges of clay binders in a pelletised chromite pre–reduction process : a case study / Kleynhans E.L.J." Thesis, North-West University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/7370.

Full text
Abstract:
As a result of increasing cost, efficiency and environmental pressures ferrochrome producers strive towards lower overall energy consumption. Increases in local electricity prices have placed particular pressure on South African ferrochrome producers. Pelletised chromite pre–reduction is likely the currently applied ferrochrome production process option with the lowest specific electricity consumption. In this process fine chromite, together with a carbonaceous reductant and a clay binder is milled, pelletised and pre–reduced. In this dissertation it is demonstrated that the functioning of the clay binder in this process is not as straightforward as in conventional metallurgical pelletisation processes, since the cured pre–reduced pellets are characterised by an oxidised outer layer and a pre–reduced core. Conventional performance characteristics of clay binders (e.g. compressive strength and abrasion resistance) therefore have to be evaluated in both oxidative sintering and reducing environments. Two clay samples, i.e. attapulgite and bentonite, were obtained from a local ferrochrome producer and investigated within the context of this study. Results indicated that the compressive and abrasion resistance strengths of oxidative sintered pellets for both clays were substantially better than that of pre–reduced pellets. Thus, although the objective of the chromite pre–reduced process is to achieve maximum pre–reduction, the strength of pre–reduced chromite pellets is significantly enhanced by the thin oxidised outer layer. The strength of the bentonite–containing pellets was found to be superior in both pre–reducing and oxidative sintering environments. This is significant, since the attapulgite clay is currently the preferred option at both South African ferrochrome smelting plants applying the pelletised chromite pre–reduction process. Although not quantitatively investigated, thermo–mechanical analysis indicated that the hot strength of the attapulgite pellets could be weaker than the bentonite–containing pellets. The possible effects of clay binder selection on the level of pre–reduction were also investigated, since it could have substantial efficiency and economic implications. For both case study clays investigated, higher clay contents resulted in lower pre–reduction levels. This has relevance within the industrial process, since higher clay contents are on occasion utilised to achieve improved green strength. The average pre–reduction of the bentonite–containing pellets were also consistently higher than that of the attapulgite–containing pellets. Again, this is significant, since the attapulgite clay is currently the preferred option. In general the case study results presented in this dissertation indicated that it is unlikely that the performance of a specific clay binder in this relatively complex process can be predicted; based only on the chemical, surface chemical and mineralogical characterisation of the clay.

This study emanates from the fact that trauma is an increasing reality in our society and it has a particular focus on social workers who work with clientele that have been exposed to and who have suffered trauma. As a result and by using clinical judgment of social workers working in such environments, the social workers may have developed Secondary Traumatic Stress (S.T.S.) symptoms. Psychosocial support functions as a preventative and supportive tool for social workers and emotion-focussed programmes have beneficial effects on the psychosocial wellbeing of social workers by reducing their distress. This study will be exploring a psychosocial intervention called Equine Assisted Therapy (E.A.T.), which makes use of horses in a therapeutic model and enables clients to interact with horses on an emotional and metaphorical level that empowers clients to experience emotional and behavioural change and growth. The significance of this study is to enable the researcher to explore E.A.T. as a possible psychosocial intervention that can provide support for social workers and health care professionals alike who work in environments where they are exposed to high levels of trauma. The researcher made use of a qualitative paradigm that was explorative in nature to gain perspective of the chosen topic. The population for the study comprised of 16 social workers that work in the family violence, child welfare and sexual assault field and who attended a once-off Equine Assisted Therapy (E.A.T.) session to expose them to the therapy model being explored. The participants then volunteered for a semi-structured interview with the researcher which was digitally recorded, thereby allowing the researcher to collect the data and then analyse the data.

Leclercq, Christophe. "Experiments in Art and Technology : la question environnementale." Thesis, Paris 1, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015PA010663.

Full text
Abstract:
The theoretical and practical activity of Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A. T.) raises a number of aesthetic problems - those posed by an organization whose aim was to facilitate and encourage collaboration between artists and engineers, both inside and outside the art world. This thesis investigates the eruption of environmental issues in art and the use made by E.A.T.'s main actors of the ambiguous concept of the environment, a concept which includes not only what surrounds us but also that which can have an influence on us. By juxtaposing and comparing what John Cage, Robert Rauschenberg and Robert Whitman had to say about their practice with key works on the infiltration of technology into our lives, we will identify an environmental approach that is part of an “explicitation” of the contemporary environment by and through art. These artists strive to highlight, through their work, the aesthetic qualities of a natural and artificial environment, the consequences of which cannot leave us untouched or indifferent. The focus on perception in the experience of this environment reflects a common interest in a 'phenomenal physics' which, even if related scientific concerns, also differs significantly from them. It is not only a question of the transformation of this pervasive environment into a perceived space but also a matter of investigating the place and role of the artist in the shaping of the human environment. Thus we see in E.A.T.'s program an activity a form of action-research focused on the individual, which envisages also the possibility not only of living in but of existing with one's environment

Full text
Abstract:

Master's thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.13/541.

Full text
Abstract:

Mphiwa, E. T. T. "Management of stress among High School Teachers in Modiri Mokema District in the North West Province / Mphiwa E.T.T." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/14719.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to alert the Department of Education, senior managers, principals, teachers, SGBs, clergymen, medical staff and the community at large that the fraternity of education is disintegrating because of the work-related issues that result in occupational stress among high school teachers around Ngaka Modiri Molema District. As a researcher, the main objective was to ensure that all stakeholders, especially teachers and principals, have knowledge about occupational s tress and are aware that occupational stress can cause the collapse of effective and efficient teaching and learning. Teachers were given questionnaire to find out how much they know about the impact of occupational stress in their lives. Principals were also given questionnaire to complete to realise how (e g. reduce high volume workload, appoint teachers tn vacant substantive posts) they should accommodate and assist teachers to overcome stress related ailments. A total of 258 teachers and 64 principals from 64 of the high schools in Ngaka Modiri Molema District were given questionnaire to complete. Many of the questionnaires were returned since the questionnaire session occurred during the teaching and learning periods and therefore it was easy to collect. The results of the research indicate that teachers need to identify stressors at work and engage with their principals and EAP officials for remedies. Teachers need to be empowered regarding stressors, prevention and management from E/\ P officials, psychologists and from reading various materials like books, magazines etc. Pnncipals and EAP officials must interact constantly with their teachers by conducting workshops and doing roadshows for advocacy purposes

Abstract:
This chapter looks at the spread of jazz—both geographically and institutionally. Almost from the start, jazz seemed destined to travel beyond its birthplace in New Orleans, but the pace of that expansion has accelerated in recent decades. Europe, which once looked to the United States for jazz role models, is increasingly self-sufficient, and other regions are also developing strong, homegrown jazz scenes. At the same time, jazz has broken down other barriers, entering schools and universities, and enjoying the support of influential nonprofit organizations such as Jazz at Lincoln Center. This shift has led to the rise of a new generation of musicians who have learned their craft in formal jazz education programs, and in many instances also teach at them, but also operate with fluency in the world of commercial music and popular culture. Artists discussed in this chapter include Brad Mehldau, Regina Carter, Esbjörn Svensson (and his band e.s.t.), and Joshua Redman.
