Abstract:
Damage to the hippocampus and surrounding regions of the medial temporal lobe can result in a permanent loss of the ability to form new long-term memories. Hippocampal memory prosthesis is designed to restore this ability. The animal model described here is the memory-dependent, delayed nonmatch-to-sample (DNMS) task in rats, and the core of the prosthesis is a biomimetic multi-input, multi-output (MIMO) nonlinear dynamical model that predicts hippocampal output (CA1) signals based on input (CA3) signals. When hippocampal CA1 function is pharmacologically blocked, successful DNMS behavior is abolished. However, when MIMO model predictions are used to re-instate CA1 memory-related activities with electrical stimulation, successful DNMS behavior and long-term memory function are restored. The hippocampal memory prosthesis has been successfully implemented in rodents and nonhuman primates, but the current system requires major advances before it can approach a working prosthesis. Looking forward, a deeper knowledge of neural coding will provide further insights.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on memory within the context of human aging. It starts with a conception of aging that highlights the interplay of genetics, lifestyles, and culture as fundamental dynamics underlying the aging process as well as its impact on memory functioning. The chapter then focuses on the context of ontogenesis and describes central concepts of memory structure and functioning in a lifespan perspective highlighting the adaptive function of memory use. Building on this, the chapter elaborates the dynamic interplay and the role of memory in the self-regulation of the aging self. Finally, the chapter places memory in the context of two aspects of culture, differing between assistive culture providing knowledge and technology resources and culture as representing symbolic resources that help in the collective and individual construction of meaning.

Abstract:
This chapter brings together two new strands of memory studies: media memory studies and transcultural memory studies. It highlights the fundamental mediatedness of memory and explores the role of media as a motor of transcultural memory. The chapter argues that cultural memory is dynamic rather than fixed, and based on “remediation”, an ongoing process of transcription from one medium to the next. The chapter explores in particular the role that media assume in a globalizing age for individual and localized forms of remembering. Using the example of World War I, it shows how literature, film, and digital media have shaped and continue to shape historical memories across cultural boundaries. Finally, the chapter introduces the concept of “premediation” in order to describe how media-derived schemata preform new experiences, memories and their mediation.
