Abstract:
During the COVID-19 pandemic, people voluntarily reduced their necessary healthcare. We examined whether supplying educational digital versatile discs (DVDs) before admission can reduce parental rejection of pediatric cardiac catheterization for congenital heart disease (CHD). Parents of 70 children with CHD selected for cardiac catheterization were randomly allocated to the DVD (received pre-admission DVDs in the outpatient department; 70 parents of 35 children) or non-DVD groups (did not receive the DVDs; 70 parents of 35 children). The parents could reject the admission of their children within 7 days. Cardiac catheterization was rejected by 14 (20.0%) and 26 (37.1%) parents in the DVD and non-DVD groups, respectively (p = 0.025). Parent Perceptions of Uncertainty Scale scores were lower in the DVD (128.3 ± 8.9 points) than in the non-DVD group (134.1 ± 7.3 points; p < 0.001). Decreased uncertainty due to pre-admission DVD watching could have contributed to the increased parental willingness for cardiac catheterization. The effects of pre-admission educational DVDs were more significant among parents with a lower education, rural residence, with only one child, female child, or younger child. Offering educational DVDs to parents of children selected for cardiac catheterization for CHD may decrease the parental rejection rate of the treatment.

Abstract:
Guided by critical discourse analysis, commercially available exercise DVDs are described in terms of the instructor and model characteristics, and the motivational content being verbally conveyed by the instructors on the DVDs. Ten commercially available, contemporary, single instructor lead exercise DVDs were obtained from multiple sources. Instructor and model characteristics, emergent relationship patterns, and the motivational content of the primary instructor were analyzed. Most instructors and models were female, Caucasian, slim, and dressed in revealing attire. Motivational statements comprised 26.9% (SD = 11.31) of the transcripts. One in seven motivational statements were negative. With body capital clearly on display and some of the motivational language being suspect in terms of building potential participants’ psychological capital, the value of commercial exercise DVDs is brought into question.

Abstract:
Purpose Teaching skills to autistic individuals can increase independence and quality of life. However, staff supporting such individuals often lack the skills needed to teach skills. This study evaluated the use of digital videos (DVDs) to coach three care staff in teaching tooth-brushing skills to three autistic adults with co-occurring intellectual disabilities. Design/methodology/approach Personalized DVDs provided guidance on key elements of teaching new skills, including graded assistance, contingent reinforcement and environmental configuration. Participants watched their DVD six times over several days. Its impact on their teaching performances was evaluated using a multiple-baseline design. Social validity was investigated by distributing a questionnaire among the participants and family members of autistic adults. Findings Teaching performances improved substantially following training. The coaching method was rated positively by participants and family members. Originality/value Video-modelling technology can be used effectively to provide an efficient, individualized and acceptable method of coaching for care staff.

Full text
Abstract:
Discontinuous velocity domain splitting method (DVDS) is a mesh free method which focuses on the strain localization and completely neglect the bulk deformations. It considers the kinematic variational principle on a special class of virtual velocity fields to get an upper-bound of the limit load. To construct this class of virtual velocity fields, the rigid-plastic body is splinted into simple connected sub-domains and on each such sub-domain a rigid motion is associated. The discontinuous collapse flow velocity field results in localized deformations only, located at the boundary of the sub-domains. In the numerical applications of the DVDS method we introduce a numerical technique based on a level set description of the partition of the rigid-plastic body and on genetic minimization algorithms. In the case of in-plane deformation of pressure insensitive materials, the internal boundaries of the sub-domains are parts of circles or straight lines, tangent to the collapse velocity jumps. In this case, DVDS reduces to the block decomposition method, which was intensively used to get analytical upper bounds of the limit loads. When applied to the two notched tensile problem of a von Mises material, DVDS gives excellent results with a low computational cost. Furthermore, DVDS was applied to model collapse in pressure sensitive plastic materials. Illustrative examples for homogenous and heterogeneous Coulomb and Cam-Clay materials shows that DVDS gives excellent prediction of limit loads and on the collapse flow.

Abstract:
AbstractThe argument for a pedagogy of input oriented learning for the development of speaking competence (Sharwood-Smith, 1986; Bardovi-Harlig and Salsbury, 2004; Eslami-Rasekh, 2005) has been of increasing interest in Applied Linguistics circles. It has also been argued that multimedia applications, in particular DVDs, provide language learners with multimodal representations that may help them ‘to gain broad access to oral communication both visually and auditory’ (Tschirner, 2001: 305). Thus this paper focuses on an exploratory study of teaching oral interaction through input processing by means of multimodal texts. The paper is divided into a number of interconnected sections. First, we outline briefly what teaching conversation implies and examine the important role of oral comprehension in the development of conversational interaction. In fact, it has been suggested that effective speaking depends very much on successful understanding (Oprandy, 1994). In this paper we pay special attention to the crucial role of context in understanding oral interactions. Therefore, we outline the theory of context in English Language Teaching (ELT). The discussion draws on approaches to teaching conversation and it also offers a brief reflection about the need for materials which might convey the sociocultural and semiotic elements of oral communication through which meaning is created. We then discuss the decisions taken to propose a new multimodal approach to teaching conversation from a three-fold perspective: (a) the selection of texts taken from films, and the benefits of using DVDs (digital versatile disc); (b) the development of a multimodal analysis of film clips for the design of activities; and (c) the promotion of a conversation awareness methodology through a bank of DVD clips to achieve an understanding of how native speakers actually go about the process of constructing oral interactions. In sum, the main thrust of this paper is to pinpoint the advantages of using multimodal materials taken from DVDs, as they provide learners with broad access to oral communication, both visual and auditory, making classroom conditions similar to the target cultural environment (Tschirner, 2001).

Abstract:
This exploratory study assessed the self-management learning needs, experiences, and perspectives of COPD patients treated at a Certified Federal Rural Health Clinic to inform the development of a COPD self-management DVD. A purposive, homogeneous sample of COPD patients participated in focus group interviews. Data from these interviews were referenced to edit a library of Rvision COPD self-management DVDs into a single condensed DVD containing only the most pertinent self-management topics. Patients reported a lack of knowledge and skill development related to purse lipped breathing, controlled coughing, and stress management; while medication management skills were found to be quite adequate. Engaging rural communities in formal qualitative inquiries to describe COPD specific needs for self-management may lead to future use of educational technologies aimed at improving quality of life for these rural, hard to reach populations.

Abstract:
In recent decades, researchers have tried to use waste materials as a partial or complete replacement of the gravel ingredients of concrete to reduce environmental impact. One of these materials is electronic waste. The problem of this disposal material, particularly outdated CDs and DVDs, has turned out to be serious. In this study, 36 pull-out cylindrical shape test specimens were used to conduct an ASTM C234-91A-compliant pull-out test to measure the bonding behavior and strength between three sizes of steel bars and concrete with different embedded lengths, including waste disc shreds (CD and DVD) as a partial substitute for fine aggregate. Four groups of modified concrete specimens with different percentages of disc shreds as partial replacements for sand were prepared. The ratio of cement:sand+disc:coarse aggregate:water was 1:2:2.5:0.4. The disc shreds were utilized to substitute partially for fine aggregate in four different weight percentages: 0%, 4%, 8%, and 12%; nevertheless, the cement-to-sand ratio was consistently 2. Results demonstrated that the bond strength is considerably influenced by the bar diameter and the disc shreds (CDs and DVDs) used as a partial replacement for fine aggregate. The bond strength behavior of the modified concrete with disc fibers is comparable with that of traditional concrete. The ACI-318 Code for the bond strength of ordinary Portland cement concrete was modified to calculate the bond strength of this new kind of disc concrete.

Abstract:
Excessive screen media use has been reported to cause shorter sleep; however, the types of media environments that affect early childhood sleep are less known. This study examined the association of multiple media use, screen time for each device, and the purpose of smartphone and tablet use with delayed bedtime among 4–8-year-olds. Participants were recruited from the Japan Environment and Children’s Study, a nationwide birth cohort study. Mothers of 1837 children reported screen media use and bedtime in a questionnaire. The association between delayed bedtimes (after 22:00 h) and media device use (smartphones, tablets, portable and console games, and TV/DVDs) was examined by logistic regression analysis. Children who used three or more devices besides TV/DVDs were more likely to have delayed bedtimes. Delayed bedtimes were associated with smartphone use, even with a 0.1–1 h/day screen time, and with prolonged screen time for tablets, portable games, and console games, but not for TV/DVDs. Gaming on smartphones and tablets was also associated with delayed bedtime. To ensure adequate sleep for young children, families must develop feasible measures to discourage children’s use of multiple devices and prolonged device use, especially for games, and a social environment that supports such measures.

Abstract:
To evaluate the relationship between subconjunctival hemorrhage (SCH) and dermatologic vasculature diseases (DVDs) via the national health insurance research database (NHIRD) of Taiwan. This retrospective cohort study used data from the NHIRD for the 2009 to 2013 period. Patients diagnosed with DVDs were enrolled in the study group, and a propensity score-matching population was selected as the control group after exclusion. The main outcome was set as the development of SCH in both groups. Multivariable Cox regression analysis and survival analysis were performed to estimate the adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) and cumulative probability of SCH. A total number of 3426 patients were enrolled and split equally into the study and the control groups. There was no prominent difference between the age, gender, urbanization, income level, systemic co-morbidities, and ocular diseases between the two groups after matching. During the whole study period, 131 patients in the study group and 98 patients in the control group developed SCH with a significant higher aHR of 2.69 in the study group (p < 0.05). In the survival analysis, the study group also demonstrated a higher cumulative probability of developing SCH than the control group throughout the study period (p = 0.02). In conclusion, the presence of DVDs may be a risk factor for the development of SCH.

Abstract:
Digital learning is being transformed by changes in copyright law. This article discusses the author's personal journey as a copyright education activist through two rounds of rulemaking proceedings before the Copyright Office concerning the anti-circumvention provisions of one part of the copyright law, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), which is the law that exempts YouTube and other ISPs from liability from copyright claims and criminalizes the circumvention of digital rights management (DRM) software that protects DVDs from being copied. Every three years, petitioners can claim their rights have been compromised by the current law; the Copyright Office pores over the petitions, weighs the pros and cons, and then offers recommendations to the Librarian of Congress, who ultimately grants or denies the exemptions. The author was successful in expanding the rights of K-12 teachers to legally “rip” DVDs by using the Section 1201 rulemaking process, which is one of the only significant ways that educators can expand their rights to use copyrighted material for teaching and learning purposes. By asserting the rights of K-12 educators to circumvent encryption to make fair use of copy-protected DVDs and online digital media for teaching and learning, the law begins to move beyond the needs of large-scale content owners to include the rights of educators and students.

Abstract:
Objective To investigate the safety and feasibility of precise delivery of a long-acting gel formulation containing 6% dexamethasone (SPT-2101) to the round window membrane for the treatment of Menière's disease Study Design Prospective, unblinded, cohort study Setting Tertiary care neurotology clinic Patients Adults 18 to 85 years with a diagnosis of unilateral definite Menière’s disease per Barany society criteria Intervention(s) A single injection of a long-acting gel formulation under direct visualization into the round window niche Main Outcome Measure(s) Procedure success rate, adverse events, and vertigo control. Vertigo control was measured with definitive vertigo days (DVDs), defined as any day with a vertigo attack lasting 20 minutes or longer. Results Ten subjects with unilateral Menière’s disease were enrolled. Precise placement of SPT-2101 at the round window was achieved in all subjects with in-office microendoscopy. Adverse events included one tympanic membrane perforation, which healed spontaneously after the study, and two instances of otitis media, which resolved with antibiotics. The average number of DVDs was 7.6 during the baseline month, decreasing to 3.3 by month 1, 3.7 by month 2, and 1.9 by month 3. Seventy percent of subjects had zero DVDs during the third month after treatment. Conclusions SPT-2101 delivery to the round window is safe and feasible, and controlled trials are warranted to formally assess efficacy
