Saville, Brian K. "A Framework for Studying the Physical Degradation Characteristics of DVDs and Their Relationship to Digital Errors." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2011. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/2893.

Abstract:
The methods used to store data on DVD-R discs have been proven to work over the last 15 years. However, there has been a growing concern that these discs will be outlasted by the paper records they were meant to replace. The data on a DVD-R is stored as optical contrasts which have the potential to be misread and even damaged. This damage may occur either on the surface or internally to the disc, especially on the recording layer itself. The literature is saturated with studies attempting to determine the time period in which discs may fail and what the general signs of the degradation are, but almost all fail to determine the fundamental causes of DVD degradation. In particular, the exact connection between the physical state of the disc and its digital errors is undetermined. This study undertook to develop a framework to study and understand this relationship. The study also consisted of a characterization validation experiment involving several brands of DVD-Rs. The framework constructed during the course of the research included several tools. Due to the lack of an existing tool able to aggregate the gathered data, a specialized software program, called SectorDraw, was developed. In the course of this study, this software tool was validated. Additionally, it was discovered that physical defects should be evaluated and characterized by using a process of visual inspection, microscope examination, and measurements. Although not all relationships between physical defects and digital errors were explored, the study established the fact that defects can directly cause bursts of digital errors. This indicated that there was a connection between physical defects and digital errors. It was also found that physical defects developed over time after treatments of artificial aging. The developed framework was established as viable for future research to study specific relationships between physical defects and digital errors.

Abstract:
Music video is an intriguing genre of television due to the fact that music drives the images and ideas found in numerous and varied examples of the form. Pre-recorded pieces of pop music are visually written upon in a palimpsest manner, resulting in an immediate and entertaining synchronisation of sound and vision. Ever since the popularity of MTV in the early 1980s, music video has been a persistent fixture in academic discussion, most notably in the work of writers like E. Ann Kaplan, Simon Frith and Andrew Goodwin. What has been of major interest to such cultural scholars is the fact that music video was designed as a promotional tool in their inception, supporting album sales and increasing the stardom of the featured recording artists. Authorship in music video studies has been traditionally kept to the representation of music stars, how they incorporate post-modern references and touch upon wider cultural themes (the Marilyn Monroe pastiche for the Madonna video, Material Girl (1985) for instance). What has not been greatly discussed is the contribution of music video directors, and the reason for that is the target audience for music videos are teenagers, who respond more to the presence of the singer or the band than the unknown figure of the director, a view that is also adhered to by music television channels like MTV.

The images (painting, photograph, cinema, etc.) had always been constructed for specific ends and through the mediation between us (spectators) and the reality, it was possible to represent the world that surrounded us. With the arrival of the graphical computation and new digital formats, the image acquires new abilities. To argue the properties and trends of the digital image are extremely excellent aspects for the development of new systems, processes and theories in communication. When it is conceived and allied to the interface concept, this image can be transformed into image-interface, thus multiplying, its characteristics and potentialities. A good platform to think the digital medias as inhabitable medias and the parameters to argue the transformation of the image in image interface is the digital video disc, because it possess technical characteristics witch allows the mapping of information and the storage of great amount of data. The objective of this research is to argue and apply the image-interface concepts, elaborated mainly by Peter Weibel, Lev Manovich and Mark Hansen, in the DVDs and the new formats of the digital communication like the Internet and electronic panels. The interfaces analysis of commercial and experimental DVDs and DVD Roms will allow to understand the current limitations in the interfaces´exploration and argue if it is possible to extend its resources and to use these concepts in the scope of a market culture, which a media quickly is substituted by another one before they deplete its possibilities

Rountree, Barry. "Theory and Practice of Dynamic Voltage/Frequency Scaling in the High Performance Computing Environment." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/305368.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation provides a comprehensive overview of the theory and practice of Dynamic Voltage/Frequency Scaling (DVFS) in the High Performance Computing (HPC) environment. We summarize the overall problem as follows: how can the same level of computational performance be achieved using less electrical power? Equivalently, how can computational performance be increased using the same amount of electrical power? In this dissertation we present performance and architecture models of DVFS as well as the Adagio runtime system. The performance model recasts the question as an optimization problem that we solve using linear programming, thus establishing a bound on potential energy savings. The architectural model provides a low-level explanation of how memory bus and CPU clock frequencies interact to determine execution time. Using insights provided from these models, we have designed and implemented the Adagio runtime system. This system realizes near-optimal energy savings on real-world scientific applications without the use of training runs or source code modification, and under the constraint that only negligible delay will be tolerated by the user. This work has opened up several new avenues of research, and we conclude by enumerating these.

Etinski, Maja. "DVFS power management in HPC systems." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/96192.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent increase in performance of High Performance Computing (HPC) systems has been followed by even higher increase in power consumption. Power draw of modern supercomputers leads to very high operating costs and reliability concerns. Furthermore, it has negative consequences on the environment. Accordingly, over the last decade there have been many works dealing with power/energy management in HPC systems. Since CPUs accounts for a high portion of the total system power consumption, our work aims at CPU power reduction. Dynamic Voltage Frequency Scaling (DVFS) is a widely used technique for CPU power management. Running an application at lower frequency/voltage reduces its power consumption. However, frequency scaling should be used carefully since it has negative effects on the application performance. We argue that the job scheduler level presents a good place for power management in an HPC center having in mind that a parallel job scheduler has a global overview of the entire system. In this thesis we propose power-aware parallel job scheduling policies where the scheduler determines the job CPU frequency, besides the job execution order. Based on the goal, the proposed policies can be classified into two groups: energy saving and power budgeting policies. The energy saving policies aim to reduce CPU energy consumption with a minimal job performance penalty. The first of the energy saving policies assigns the job frequency based on system utilization while the other makes job performance predictions. While for less loaded workloads these policies achieve energy savings, highly loaded workloads suffer from a substantial performance degradation because of higher job wait times due to an increase in load caused by longer job run times. Our results show higher potential of the DVFS technique when applied for power budgeting. The second group of policies are policies for power constrained systems. In contrast to the systems without a power limitation, in the case of a given power budget the DVFS technique even improves overall job performance reducing the average job wait time. This comes from a lower job power consumption that allows more jobs to run simultaneously. The first proposed policy from this group assigns CPU frequency using the job predicted performance and current power draw of already running jobs. The other power budgeting policy is based on an optimization problem which solution determines the job execution order, as well as power distribution among jobs selected for execution. This policy fully exploits available power and leads to further performance improvements. The last contribution of the thesis is an analysis of the DVFS technique potential for energyperformance trade-off in current and future HPC systems. Ongoing changes in technology decrease the DVFS applicability for energy savings but the technique still reduces power consumption making it useful for power constrained systems. In order to analyze DVFS potential, a model of frequency scaling impact on MPI application execution time has been proposed and validated against measurements on a large-scale system. This parametric analysis showed for which application/platform characteristic, frequency scaling leads to energy savings.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to seek answers to the questions how the sales in a photo shop can be affected by animated commercial presentations and what the costs of producing such presentations would be. The costs are calculated from three different scenarios. The presentations produced has been for one single camera model and for selected products within three product groups; binoculars, digital cameras and printed matters. The task has included image processing of self-shot and existing photos, as well as arranging and animating the photos together with texts and three-dimensional models of selected products. The content and proceedings for each product group is presented separately together with problems occurred during the production. Eventually, the result chapter presents the sales statistics and calculated costs.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze DVD covers for the genre romantic comedy from the 2000s as a way to obtain patterns and codes provided by the genre. The theoretical framework consists of previous research that analyzed various posters, theories about semiotics, genre, and visual rhetoric.  These theories will help answer the main question and help with the analysis. The objects for observation are ten DVD covers from the genre romantic comedy and a qualitative content analysis is used for this thesis. The movies are from the US and they are all high in Box Office. Box Office stands for how many tickets were sold and how much money a film has earned. The use of numbers from Box Office shows that the movie had a successful marketing prior coming out as DVD. The analysis focuses also on movies from the year 2003 – 2012 as a way to get a ten years gap and also get the contemporary movies. The results show that there are codes and patterns provided from various DVD covers. Visual expressions as clothing, angles, perspectives, postures, facial expressions and colors say a lot about how the genre is visualized. It's also important for these visual expressions to work together – as they tell a story about the relationships and the characters, and also what the movie is going to be about. The main conclusion is that the woman is usually the one who is in focus and she is the active one. This doesn't necessary mean that the woman is in a higher position when it comes to the society or that she'll always have the upper hand in the relationship, but she is the one that has the upper hand right now. It's also clear that the DVD covers show when the couples aren't happily ever after.

Abstract:
Aim: The aim of this study is to examine the experiences of adolescents, during visits at the orthodontist or orthodontic assistant, for fixed appliances treatment. The purpose is also to examine possible differences in experience when treated with self-ligating or conventional brackets.  Material and method: This study is a part of a larger project that aims to compare self-ligating brackets (Damon) with conventional brackets (Victory). After each treatment session the patients received a questionnaire. The questions concerning the patients experience of the care givers way of showing knowledge, acceptance, responsibility of interaction and the way of communication the information.  Result: In total 113 participants were included in the study (54 boys and 59 girls). At the beginning of the treatments the average age of the participants were 14,7 years. Both techniques received high grades, meaning the patients generally were satisfied with the treatments. Five questions showed significant differences in comparison between the techniques. The questions about information, understanding, acceptance and whether the caregiver was harsh in handling, showed differences at visit 4. Regarding the question about accuracy, a difference was noted during visit 3, 4 and 5. No significant difference between the sexes was shown for any question.  Conclusion: From the patient ́s point of view Swedish orthodontic care is satisfying. Few differences were noted when comparing the appliances. The results may indicate that treatment with Damon gives a more positive and less harshly experience in comparison with Victory.

Saha, Sonal. "An Experimental Evaluation of Real-Time DVFS Scheduling Algorithms." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/35035.

Full text
Abstract:
Dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) is an extensively studied energy manage- ment technique, which aims to reduce the energy consumption of computing platforms by dynamically scaling the CPU frequency. Real-Time DVFS (RT-DVFS) is a branch of DVFS, which reduces CPU energy consumption through DVFS, while at the same time ensures that task time constraints are satisfied by constructing appropriate real-time task schedules. The literature presents numerous RT-DVFS scheduling algorithms, which employ different tech- niques to utilize the CPU idle time to scale the frequency. Many of these algorithms have been experimentally studied through simulations, but have not been implemented on real hardware platforms. Though simulation-based experimental studies can provide a first-order understanding, implementation-based studies can reveal actual timeliness and energy con- sumption behaviours. This is particularly important, when it is difficult to devise accurate simulation models of hardware, which is increasingly the case with modern systems. In this thesis, we study the timeliness and energy consumption behaviours of fourteen state- of-the-art RT-DVFS schedulers by implementing and evaluating them on two hardware plat- forms. The schedulers include CC-EDF, LA-EDF, REUA, DRA andd AGR1 among others, and the hardware platforms include ASUS laptop with the Intel I5 processor and a mother- board with the AMD Zacate processor. We implemented these schedulers in the ChronOS real-time Linux kernel and measured their actual timeliness and energy behaviours under a range of workloads including CPU-intensive, memory-intensive, mutual exclusion lock- intensive, and processor-underloaded and overloaded workloads. Our studies reveal that measuring the CPU power consumption as the cube of CPU fre- quency can lead to incorrect conclusions. In particular, it ignores the idle state CPU power consumption, which is orders of magnitude smaller than the active power consumption. Consequently, power savings obtained by exclusively optimizing active power consumption (i.e., RT-DVFS) may be offset by completing tasks sooner by running them at the highest frequency and transitioning to the idle state earlier (i.e., no DVFS). Thus, the active power consumption savings of the RT-DVFS techniquesâ that we report are orders of magnitude smaller than their simulation-based savings reported in the literature.

Abstract:
Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) are generalized objects describing nucleon structure. GPDs correlate the spatial and the momentum distributions of partons inside the nucleon. Therefore, they provide richer information about the nucleon structure than the well-known form factors and parton distribution functions. GPDs are accessible via exclusive reactions, where all particles in the final state are identifed. Deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) and deeply virtual neutral pion production (DVMP) are discussed. The document is divided into four chapters: physics introduction, data analysis, development of a detector, and a short preview of a new scintillator material. With an 11 GeV electron beam and a proton target at Je_erson Lab, a precise DVCS and DVMP experiment in the valence quark region was performed. The data analysis and preliminary results of this experiment are presented in the second chapter. An upcoming experiment will give more constraints on the extraction of GPDs. For this new experiment, a neutral particle spectrometer (NPS) is under construction. In the third chapter, simulation studies and hardware developments for the NPS calorimeter are presented. Finally, characterizations of a new glass scintillator are shortly discussed. This material, which is in an early stage of development, is one of the candidates for the calorimeters of a future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC)

The High-Performance Computing (HPC) community is currently undergoingdisruptive technology changes in almost all fields, including a switch towardsmassive parallelism with several thousand compute cores on a single GPU oraccelerator and new, complex networks. Powering a massively parallel machinebecomesThe energy consumption of these machines will continue to grow in the future, making energy one of the principal cost factors of machine ownership. This explainswhy even the classic metric "flop/s", generally used to evaluate HPC applicationsand machines, is widely regarded as to be replaced by an energy-centric metric"flop/watt".One approach to predict energy consumption is through simulation, however, a pre-cise performance prediction is crucial to estimate the energy faithfully. In this thesis,we contribute to the performance and energy prediction of HPC architectures. Wepropose an energy model which we have implemented in the open source SimGridsimulator. We validate this model by carefully and systematically comparing itwith real experiments. Abstract:
As handheld devices have become increasingly popular, powerful programmable graphics hardware for mobile and handheld devices has been deployed. While many resources on mobile devices are limited, the predominant problem for mobile devices is their limited battery power. Several techniques have been proposed to increase the energy efficiency of mobile applications and improve battery life. In this thesis, we propose a new dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) on Graphics Processing Units (GPU). In most cases, cues within the graphics appli- cation can be used to predict portions of a GPU that will be used or unused when the application is run. We partition the GPU into six clock domains that can be clocked at different rates. Specifically, each domain it has its own voltage and frequency set- ting based on its predicted workload to save energy without reducing applications frame rates. In addition, we propose an signature-based algorithm for predicting the workload offered to our six clock domains by a given application to decide voltage and frequency settings. We conduct experiments and compare the results of our new signature based workload prediction algorithm with some other traditional interval based workload prediction algorithms. Our results show that our signature-based prediction can save 30-50% energy without afecting application frame rates.

Abstract:
Thesis (MSc (Clinical Psychology)) -- University of Limpopo, 2010.
The Clinical Psychology training program at the University of Limpopo (Medunsa Campus) is based on the theoretical paradigm of General Systems Theory. The functioning of systems in terms of patterns, structure, organization and relationships can therefore also be applied to the trainee and his/her partner relationship system which is characterized by circular patterns of interaction. Ernst (2008) states that within the context of General Systems theory it became evident that the trainee does not function in isolation but as part of a system. The trainee undergoes significant changes throughout the training year if training is effective and this in turn may also impact on the trainee's partner relationship. This investigation was done to establish the effect of a DVD Counselling Programme on the partner-relationship of the trainee in Clinical Psychology with his/her partner/spouse. This is done in order to provide feedback to the trainers of the Clinical Psychology training at Medunsa. This may also possibly assist in establishing a more scientifically founded aid for the trainees in Msc. Clinical Psychology and their partners/spouses. It was a qualitative research project, in which person centered interviews were held with participants and thematically analyzed by three independent clinicians. The entire research project and findings are contextualized in accordance with General Systems Theory. The results indicated that the DVD had a moderate effect on 4/6 of the sample population that reported that their relationship improved in respect of the nature and quality based on mutual understanding, emotional closeness, obtaining of relational skills, effective communication and awareness regarding the impact of the training year on their relationship. The impact of the DVD was somewhat limited in that not all the participants watched it and the manner iIi which some of the trainees approached their partners/spouses, which may have had an effect on how the DVD is received and experienced.

Abstract:
In this work concepts and circuits for local clock generation in low-power heterogeneous multiprocessor systems-on-chip (MPSoCs) are researched and developed. The targeted systems feature a globally asynchronous locally synchronous (GALS) clocking architecture and advanced power management functionality, as for example fine-grained ultra-fast dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS). To enable this functionality compact clock generators with low chip area, low power consumption, wide output frequency range and the capability for ultra-fast frequency changes are required. They are to be instantiated individually per core. For this purpose compact all digital phase-locked loop (ADPLL) frequency synthesizers are developed. The bang-bang ADPLL architecture is analyzed using a numerical system model and optimized for low jitter accumulation. A 65nm CMOS ADPLL is implemented, featuring a novel active current bias circuit which compensates the supply voltage and temperature sensitivity of the digitally controlled oscillator (DCO) for reduced digital tuning effort. Additionally, a 28nm ADPLL with a new ultra-fast lock-in scheme based on single-shot phase synchronization is proposed. The core clock is generated by an open-loop method using phase-switching between multi-phase DCO clocks at a fixed frequency. This allows instantaneous core frequency changes for ultra-fast DVFS without re-locking the closed loop ADPLL. The sensitivity of the open-loop clock generator with respect to phase mismatch is analyzed analytically and a compensation technique by cross-coupled inverter buffers is proposed. The clock generators show small area (0.0097mm2 (65nm), 0.00234mm2 (28nm)), low power consumption (2.7mW (65nm), 0.64mW (28nm)) and they provide core clock frequencies from 83MHz to 666MHz which can be changed instantaneously. The jitter performance is compliant to DDR2/DDR3 memory interface specifications. Additionally, high-speed clocks for novel serial on-chip data transceivers are generated. The ADPLL circuits have been verified successfully by 3 testchip implementations. They enable efficient realization of future low-power MPSoCs with advanced power management functionality in deep-submicron CMOS technologies

Performance and energy consumption are directly related. To increase performance, the number of instructions per second to be executed must also be increased, in other words, processor frequency must be changed. The higher this value is, higher energy consumption also has to be. Likewise, by decreasing the number of instructions to be executed, energy consumption and performance are also reduced. So, exploring performance and energy relation is the key idea behind Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling – DVFS, technique. Applying DVFS in real time systems is not a trivial task. These system’s tasks are bounded to timing constraints in such a way that, if decreasing performance does not guarantee constraints, the system may totally fail. Thus, this work aims to gather two DVFS approaches in real time systems: intra and inter-tasks. The intra-task analyzes execution flow of a task and identify where the new instructions can be inserted to change supply voltage and frequency when the worst case path is not followed. On the other hand, the inter-task approach analyzes how long a task will wait due to interferences (e.g. preemption, shared resources), verifies system schedulability and defines a set of initial optimum frequencies in multi-task environment. The result is a new code with the same functionality as the original one, however with instructions to change voltage and frequency when taking into account a task interferences. Moreover, the experimental results show not only energy consumption was reduced, but also timing constraints were satisfied.

Abstract:

This thesis is about cover illustrations of DVD movies as examples of visual communication. I have studied the cover illustrations of the three movies Gran Torino, Secret Window and As White As Snow. My research assignment has been to find out how the cover illustrations of DVD movies communicate in relation to the story. I have also been looking for what makes a cover illustration interesting and if the interest in itself is individually considered or if there are certain general rules regardless of the observer.

To reach a conclusion I have been studying components in advertising pictures, visual communication and how the commercial producers use advertising to communicate with the observer. Semiotics, advertising and comparisons between the cover illustrations have been my method for analyze.

I have come to the conclusion that cover illustrations are meticulously produced, and that every single part of them is important for the observers’ over all impression and interpretation of the cover illustration. The place of picture elements, colours, looks and occurrence of persons in the covers are striving to send a uniform message about the cover and movie. They also guide the observer in his/her interpretation of the cover and what kind of movie it represents, and they are components that make the cover more visible. What makes the cover illustration interesting is both something individual and something general. For example the occurrence of humans, looks, strong emotions and colours make the cover more visible and interesting in relation to others. The observers’ interest for the cover may be individual depending on the observer’s experiences and interpretation.

Abstract:
Extreme art cinema, has, in recent film scholarship, become an important area of study. Many of the existing practices are motivated by a Franco-centric lens, which ultimately defines transgressive art cinema as a new phenomenon. The thesis argues that a study of extreme art cinema needs to consider filmic production both within and beyond France. It also argues that it requires an historical analysis, and I contest the notion that extreme art cinema is a recent mode of Film production. The study considers extreme art cinema as inhabiting a space between ‘high’ and ‘low’ art forms, noting the slippage between the two often polarised industries. The study has a focus on the paratext, with an analysis of DVD extras including ‘making ofs’ and documentary featurettes, interviews with directors, and cover sleeves. This will be used to examine audience engagement with the artefacts, and the films’ position within the film market. Through a detailed assessment of the visual symbols used throughout the films’ narrative images, the thesis observes the manner in which they engage with the taste structures and pictorial templates of art and exploitation cinema. Through this methodological direction, the thesis is able to assess how the films are sold to an audience, how this relates to the historical progression of extreme art cinema, and the way the entire practice is informed by an ongoing tradition of taste fluidity.

Fenton-Keane, Jayne. "Three-Dimensional Poetic Nature: Dissertation andCreative Works (DVD)." Thesis, Griffith University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/366130.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis and accompanying creative product explore poetry as a multi-dimensional expression that is intrinsically inter-disciplinary. Poetry written for and practiced in media other than the page is surprisingly under-investigated. Such poetry has had difficulty establishing ‘legitimacy’ and currency in the world of practice, as traditional poetry spaces are rarely equipped, in terms of audience readiness or technological capacities, to appreciate such work. For the purposes of this investigation, the term ‘Three-Dimensional Poetic Natures’ refers specifically to poetry beyond the page, particularly in relation to performance poetry; not the imaginative landscapes created by poetic texts. Research undertaken during the course of this PhD investigated the spatial and embodied aspects of poetry beyond the page and its relationship with space, time and ecology, through creative and discursive exchanges. I use the word ‘ecological’ throughout the thesis to represent poetry and its performance as profoundly interconnected with culture, people and the environment. The word ‘ecological’ enables me to discuss poetry as a living organism in exchange with the world. ‘Ecological’ or ‘ecology’ are not used to imply eco-friendly or environmentally sustainable. The exchange that takes place in relation to animals within this dissertation and creative product also stems from the idea of ecology as a site of living and vibrant exchanges. Poetics that emerge from ecological thinking represent more than ideas, they also consider spatiality, acoustics, environments, subjectivities and texts. The poems infusing my research are technologically enabled and dependent. H2O, Liquid Stanzas and Dive, the three creative products developed during the course of this research, represent forms of ecological poetry concerned with the marine environment. As water and its inhabitants, processes and spaces are the creative focus of this investigation, I have oriented the dissertation towards an engagement with water. Performance is integral to all of the creative works; as an enactment of subjectivity and as a way of expressing voice, presence, spacetime and text (in its broadest sense). The experience of composing H2O, Liquid Stanzas and Dive helped me witness the three-dimensional nature of poetry as it mutates conventional poetic form and migrates across ecological boundaries. I chose water in order to concentrate investigations into an ecological poetics on one environment; an environment with deeply personal resonances.

Abstract:
This creative project consists of a short fiction film which is finished on DVD and features a full length video commentary. The video commentary is an invention of my own which utilizes an often overlooked element of DVD technology, the multi-angle ability, to effectively merge two of the most popular features of modern motion picture DVD releases: the director's commentary and the production documentary. The disk actually contains two tracks of video, each of identical length. One is the film; the other is a documentary on the making of the film, with certain sections that correspond in real time with events in the film. The user has the ability to switch between tracks at anytime for comparison. This to my knowledge has never been done before, and because of the enormous popularity of the DVD and these features, may find widespread application. This project, while only an exploration of its potential, shows that the idea has feasibility and legitimacy.

Abstract:
Consumers have long relied on ratings measures to help them make choices among goods of heterogeneous quality. With the growth of the New Economy over the last 10 years, it is becoming increasingly possible to aggregate information and create ratings for many industries. My research focuses on the effect of quality ratings on consumer choice, the social benefit of the quality signals, and on how well firms that develop ratings signals can capture a share of the social benefit. I examine these issues using data from Netflix, the on--line DVD rental service with mail delivery, which also provides a rating system that aggregates the preferences of the people who use their service. In the first chapter I use a reduced--form specification to analyze the Netflix ratings database and estimate aggregate demand for movies. The second chapter develops a structural Bayesian learning model and assesses the effect of ratings on DVD rental behavior. The last chapter is dedicated to the analysis of consumer and producer welfare as a function of the information created by the ratings system.

Abstract:
The film image has a profound ambivalence : it produces an effect of « reality » and a certain documentary « objectivity », at the same time as it stages the filmmaker's world picture and subjective point of view. This ambivalence, creating a complex relationship between the reality studied and its film representation, has marked the history of ethnographic cinema. The first part of this thesis analyses the construction procedures of the ethnographer-filmmaker's view, from the first ethnographic chronophotographs emanating from a supposedly « objective » approach, to the cinema of Jean Rouch proposing a first person subjective viewpoint. In the second part, the author reflects upon the construction of her own viewpoint as ethnographer-filmmaker through three of her films (on the Tati-Barbès department store, the Goutte d'or neighbourhood, and the decorative art of Pakistani lorries). The author describes her own practice as experimental, always taking into account the subjectivity of her own perspective as ethnographer and filmmaker (visible in the image but nevertheless not easily traceable) as an unavoidable parameter of her research. In the aim of recounting her film experiences, stressing each time the observation devices in use, the author re-examines her own film productions in written and in multimedia form (one multimedia per film), analysing and explaining the way her subjectivity participates in the cinematic research and writing. Finally, the author explores new the perspectives regarding writing and the restitution of field material (still or animated images, sounds, texts) offered today by the multimedia to the ethnographer-filmmaker

With the continuous scaling down of transistor feature sizes, the semiconductor industry faces new challenges. One of these challenges is the incessant increase of power consumption in integrated circuits. This problem has motivated the industry and academia to pay significant attention to low-power circuit design for the past two decades. Operating digital circuits at lower voltage levels was shown to increase energy efficiency and lower power consumption. Being an integral part of the digital systems, Static Random Access Memories (SRAMs), dominate the power consumption and area of modern integrated circuits. Consequently, designing low-power high density SRAMs operational at low voltage levels is an important research problem. This thesis focuses on and makes several contributions to low-power SRAM design. The trade-offs and potential overheads associated with designing SRAMs for a very large voltage range are analyzed. An 8T SRAM cell is designed and optimized for both sub-threshold and above-threshold operation. Hardware reconfigurability is proposed as a solution to power and area overheads due to peripheral assist circuitry which are necessary for low voltage operation. A 64kbit SRAM has been designed in 65nm CMOS process and the fabricated chip has been tested, demonstrating operation at power supply levels from 0.25V to 1.2V. This is the largest operating voltage range reported in 65nm semiconductor technology node. Additionally, another low voltage SRAM has been designed for the on-chip caches of a low-power H.264 video decoder. Power and performance models of the memories have been developed along with a configurable interface circuit. This custom memory implemented with the low-power architecture of the decoder provides nearly 10X power savings.

Abstract:
In 1997, DVD was introduced to the American public, beginning the fastest diffusion of any consumer electronics product in history. In this dissertation, I show how DVD, via favorable conditions in industry, technology, culture, economics, and the regulatory environment, replaced existing home video and computing technologies while transforming home entertainment. I analyze how DVD was successfully developed and commercialized by member firms in the filmed entertainment, consumer electronics, and computing industries from 1994-2002. I demonstrate how a new industry developed around DVD through unprecedented cooperation between these three industries. This study uses trade publications, mainstream press reports, industry data, advertisements, depositions to congress, and published interviews with industry members to analyze a process that has been understudied by scholars. Through the use of these resources, I explore how demand for the technology developed within existing contexts and how myriad forces aligned to enable the emergence of a new disc technology. Furthermore, I demonstrate how DVD reshaped these contexts while transforming the nature and business of filmed content distribution. DVD initiated a new era for digital content distribution. This era was marked by the convergence of three industries, new levels of access to filmed entertainment, mobilized viewing opportunities, the conflation of the computer and the television set, and heightened efforts to protect content through a variety of legal, regulatory, and technological strategies.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to gather information on whether or not the director’s commentary feature on a DVD could develop teachers’ Film Study knowledge and skills. This mini-dissertation was directed by the following research question: can the additional information on DVDs enhance teachers’ knowledge and potential for effective teaching of Film Study? In an attempt to answer the above question a literature review was conducted to establish the importance of Professional Development and Film Study. The director’s commentary feature was then investigated as a possible development resource. By means of a qualitative Case Study that used an open-ended questionnaire and focus group interviews, data was collected from nine respondents from two different East Rand High Schools. These findings were analysed, coded and written up. The literature study also incorporates a discussion on three different types of literacy, Film Study and Film Theory. This led to the director’s commentary feature being presented as a development resource for Film Study teachers. Research indicates that Film Study is viewed as important and is valued as a part of the South African Language curriculum. This research recognises that there is a need to develop Film Study teachers in South Africa. The director’s commentary feature found on DVDs was provided as a possible solution as a Film Study development resource. Literature findings state that a director is the person responsibility for a film’s decision making process. This highlights the importance of the director and the value of the director’s commentary. However, field research could not generate a definite result some respondents found the commentary useful, whereas others did not. Whilst certain conclusions can be made regarding the director’s commentary feature, literature and field research did not correlate. Thus, the director’s commentary feature as a Film Study development resource is open for further exploration.

This thesis presents a framework which can avoid the lengthy system test by utilizing machine-learning techniques to classify parts into different DVFS bins based on the results collected at CP and FT test only. The core machine-learning techniques in use are Bayesian linear regression for model fitting and stepwise regression for feature selection. Another method, called the incremental Fmax-model search, is also presented to reduce the test time of collecting the required data for each training sample. The experiments are conducted based on 249 test chips of an industrial SoC. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed framework can achieve a high accuracy ratio of placing a part into correct DVFS bin without placing any slower part into a faster DVFS bin. The experimental results also demonstrate that the incremental Fmax-model search can save 45.1% and 52.6% of applications of the system-level test compared to the conventional median linear search and binary search, respectively.

Taiwan is the most important production base of media storage industry in the world. In addition, the development of science and technology enables everybody to enjoy the digital services of the technology. As a result, there is a widesparead use of storage media leading to a great environmental impact that is worth our attention. This study is a real media storage industry to explore the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of the DVD-R and DVD-DL discs. At first, the data of raw material input, prodution, pollution emission and waste generation were first surveyed in a factory. This was then followed by investigation of the environmental impact of the DVD-R and DVD-DL discs during production and use stages. This study used the LCA software developed by ITRI, and the environmental impacts model Eco-indicator 95 to quantify the impacts. Results of the study indicate that the biggest environmental loading all comes from the consumption of the electricity both in DVD-R and DVD-DL discs during production and use stages. After the quantification by the Eco-indicator 95 based on the 1 TB storage capacity, it is found that DVD-DL discs have higher environmental impacts in the producing stage and DVD-R discs have higher environmental impacts in the use stage. During the entire life cycle that indicates the producing and use stages, this study shows that DVD-DL discs have higher environmental impacts than DVD-R discs. Based on 1 TB storage capacity, the environmental impacts of DVD-DL and DVD-R discs are 194.6, 121.3 kgCO2 for greenhouse gases, respectively; 3.31, 1.92 kgSO2 for acid depletion, respectively; 3420, 2183 MJ for energy, respectively; 15.7, 9.4 kg for solid waste, respectively; 967, 1266 kg for water resource (water consumption), respectively; 4.025E-09, 5.491E-09 kg B (a) P for carcinogens, respectively. This study shows over 90% of the environmental impacts lies in the production stage during the entire life cycle. Therefore, it’s suggested that the disc manufaturer improve the production processes for making higher capacity and higher read/write speed discs for a better environment.
