Abstract:
During the COVID-19 pandemic, people voluntarily reduced their necessary healthcare. We examined whether supplying educational digital versatile discs (DVDs) before admission can reduce parental rejection of pediatric cardiac catheterization for congenital heart disease (CHD). Parents of 70 children with CHD selected for cardiac catheterization were randomly allocated to the DVD (received pre-admission DVDs in the outpatient department; 70 parents of 35 children) or non-DVD groups (did not receive the DVDs; 70 parents of 35 children). The parents could reject the admission of their children within 7 days. Cardiac catheterization was rejected by 14 (20.0%) and 26 (37.1%) parents in the DVD and non-DVD groups, respectively (p = 0.025). Parent Perceptions of Uncertainty Scale scores were lower in the DVD (128.3 ± 8.9 points) than in the non-DVD group (134.1 ± 7.3 points; p < 0.001). Decreased uncertainty due to pre-admission DVD watching could have contributed to the increased parental willingness for cardiac catheterization. The effects of pre-admission educational DVDs were more significant among parents with a lower education, rural residence, with only one child, female child, or younger child. Offering educational DVDs to parents of children selected for cardiac catheterization for CHD may decrease the parental rejection rate of the treatment.

Saville, Brian K. "A Framework for Studying the Physical Degradation Characteristics of DVDs and Their Relationship to Digital Errors." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2011. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/2893.

Abstract:
The methods used to store data on DVD-R discs have been proven to work over the last 15 years. However, there has been a growing concern that these discs will be outlasted by the paper records they were meant to replace. The data on a DVD-R is stored as optical contrasts which have the potential to be misread and even damaged. This damage may occur either on the surface or internally to the disc, especially on the recording layer itself. The literature is saturated with studies attempting to determine the time period in which discs may fail and what the general signs of the degradation are, but almost all fail to determine the fundamental causes of DVD degradation. In particular, the exact connection between the physical state of the disc and its digital errors is undetermined. This study undertook to develop a framework to study and understand this relationship. The study also consisted of a characterization validation experiment involving several brands of DVD-Rs. The framework constructed during the course of the research included several tools. Due to the lack of an existing tool able to aggregate the gathered data, a specialized software program, called SectorDraw, was developed. In the course of this study, this software tool was validated. Additionally, it was discovered that physical defects should be evaluated and characterized by using a process of visual inspection, microscope examination, and measurements. Although not all relationships between physical defects and digital errors were explored, the study established the fact that defects can directly cause bursts of digital errors. This indicated that there was a connection between physical defects and digital errors. It was also found that physical defects developed over time after treatments of artificial aging. The developed framework was established as viable for future research to study specific relationships between physical defects and digital errors.

Abstract:
Music video is an intriguing genre of television due to the fact that music drives the images and ideas found in numerous and varied examples of the form. Pre-recorded pieces of pop music are visually written upon in a palimpsest manner, resulting in an immediate and entertaining synchronisation of sound and vision. Ever since the popularity of MTV in the early 1980s, music video has been a persistent fixture in academic discussion, most notably in the work of writers like E. Ann Kaplan, Simon Frith and Andrew Goodwin. What has been of major interest to such cultural scholars is the fact that music video was designed as a promotional tool in their inception, supporting album sales and increasing the stardom of the featured recording artists. Authorship in music video studies has been traditionally kept to the representation of music stars, how they incorporate post-modern references and touch upon wider cultural themes (the Marilyn Monroe pastiche for the Madonna video, Material Girl (1985) for instance). What has not been greatly discussed is the contribution of music video directors, and the reason for that is the target audience for music videos are teenagers, who respond more to the presence of the singer or the band than the unknown figure of the director, a view that is also adhered to by music television channels like MTV.

The images (painting, photograph, cinema, etc.) had always been constructed for specific ends and through the mediation between us (spectators) and the reality, it was possible to represent the world that surrounded us. With the arrival of the graphical computation and new digital formats, the image acquires new abilities. To argue the properties and trends of the digital image are extremely excellent aspects for the development of new systems, processes and theories in communication. When it is conceived and allied to the interface concept, this image can be transformed into image-interface, thus multiplying, its characteristics and potentialities. A good platform to think the digital medias as inhabitable medias and the parameters to argue the transformation of the image in image interface is the digital video disc, because it possess technical characteristics witch allows the mapping of information and the storage of great amount of data. The objective of this research is to argue and apply the image-interface concepts, elaborated mainly by Peter Weibel, Lev Manovich and Mark Hansen, in the DVDs and the new formats of the digital communication like the Internet and electronic panels. The interfaces analysis of commercial and experimental DVDs and DVD Roms will allow to understand the current limitations in the interfaces´exploration and argue if it is possible to extend its resources and to use these concepts in the scope of a market culture, which a media quickly is substituted by another one before they deplete its possibilities

Rountree, Barry. "Theory and Practice of Dynamic Voltage/Frequency Scaling in the High Performance Computing Environment." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/305368.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation provides a comprehensive overview of the theory and practice of Dynamic Voltage/Frequency Scaling (DVFS) in the High Performance Computing (HPC) environment. We summarize the overall problem as follows: how can the same level of computational performance be achieved using less electrical power? Equivalently, how can computational performance be increased using the same amount of electrical power? In this dissertation we present performance and architecture models of DVFS as well as the Adagio runtime system. The performance model recasts the question as an optimization problem that we solve using linear programming, thus establishing a bound on potential energy savings. The architectural model provides a low-level explanation of how memory bus and CPU clock frequencies interact to determine execution time. Using insights provided from these models, we have designed and implemented the Adagio runtime system. This system realizes near-optimal energy savings on real-world scientific applications without the use of training runs or source code modification, and under the constraint that only negligible delay will be tolerated by the user. This work has opened up several new avenues of research, and we conclude by enumerating these.

Abstract:
The DVD is acknowledged as the image and information storage media for the next generation of video, music, and computer systems and also for a broad range of other applications. The market for DVDs has already taken off, and the DVD family is looked to as being a united system for image and information. Compatibility among DVD formats is essential for the 4.7-GB DVD-RAM. The key concept of this is large capacity without placing a burden on the readout system.

Abstract:
The newly agreed high-density read-only format, DVD, adopts two 0.6 mm disks attached back to back as a standard, in order to allow the optical system to have more tilt angle margin, with high numerical aperture (NA) objective lens. On the other hand, the conventional CD family disks are 1.2 mm thick, single side. Since diffraction-limited spot quality is essential to read the preformed pit signals with sufficient accuracy, spherical aberration caused by the disk plate must be corrected appropriately. We have proposed the new optical head with aperture-control capability using liquid crystal shutter (LCS), which can play both CDs and DVDs with single objective lens which is corrected for only DVD disk thickness.

Data generating project work in middle school is a successful component of statistics training at this level. CensusAtSchool, GAISE, CAUSE projects and Statistics New Zealand SURFs also provide data for investigation in middle school and beyond. To motivate students further, real data from current research should be used in the classroom to help take statistics training to the next level. Such data are described. Eleven research projects are presented in DVDs with matching data provided on CDs. Context is outlined, study design and data collection are discussed, and proposals are made for analyses to answer questions. The DVDs, developed for use in 2009, feature illustrated researcher talks. The DVDs and CDs are also available for viewing on the web. A range of studies are described along with tasks to be carried out. Feedback from school teachers and students on relevance of this resource will be discussed.

Abstract:
Recently a high density optical disk system: DVD (having about 7 times higher recording capacity than that of the conventional CD disk) has been announced to be marketed within this year. The DVD has designed to have a sufficient capacity enough to store full length movies, and is also expected to be used as a large capacity memory for the personal computer memory application. This DVD disk has a same diameter to that of the CD disk, but its substrate thickness is halved to realize the high recording density, the DVD disks are made by bonding two 0.6 mm thickness substrates back to back and we can read data from each/single side. As a DVD being a kind of optical disks, the DVD drive is assumed to have a compatibility to be able to read conventional CD disks besides DVDs, though the used optical parameters are definitely different We studied several compatible pickup head designs, and we successfully realized a truly compatible optical pickup head which overcame 2 times different substrate thickness and different recording density. We report the structure of our DVD/CD compatible pickup.
