Robillard, Michael, and Bradley Strawser. Outsourcing Duty. Oxford University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190671457.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Are contemporary soldiers exploited by the state and society that they defend? More specifically, have America’s professional service members been uniquely exploited insofar as they have disproportionately carried the moral weight of America’s collective warfighting decisions since the inception of the all-volunteer force post-Vietnam and particularly since 9/11? In this work, Michael Robillard and Bradley Strawser argue that many of American soldiers have indeed been exploited in this unique way. By offering their original normative theory of “moral exploitation”—the notion that persons or groups can be wrongfully exploited by being made to shoulder an excessive amount of moral responsibility, moral risk, and exposure to “dirty hands”—Robillard and Strawser make the case that such a state of affairs describes America’s present relationship with its military. By offering a thorough and in-depth analysis of some of the exploitative and misleading elements of present-day military recruitment, the pernicious civil-military divide existing between military members and the civilian principle both within the organs of government and the public at large, and the stifling effect that “thank you for your service,” “I support the troops” culture has had on serious public engagement concerning America’s ongoing wars, Robillard and Strawser offer a tour de force of eye-opening arguments on the demoralizing state of affairs of the American soldier. They conclude by arguing for several normative and prudential prescriptions to help close this ever-widening fissure existing between America and its military and existing within America herself. In so doing, their work gives a much needed and urgent voice to America’s other 1%.

Abstract:
This chapter turns to the UN operating locations established in Host States. In the day-to-day practice of multidimensional peace operations, the UN mission usually is established as a multifaceted mission, often located in or near the Host State capital. But depending on the type of the mission, other field locations or duty stations may be used by the various components of the mission. Operating locations may be spread out in the various provinces and districts of the Host State. At the country level, UN resident coordinators and UN country teams implement the UN Development Group’s strategic priorities by identifying the national policies, programmes, and capacity development gaps and challenges, to which the UN system can best contribute under national ownership and leadership by mobilizing the full range of mandates and expertise of the UN development system.

Full text
Abstract:
Poetry, arguably, has a greater range of conceptual meaning than perhaps any other term in English. At the most basic level everyone can recognize it—it is a kind of literature that uses special linguistic devices of organization and expression for aesthetic effect. However, far grander claims have been made for poetry. Poetry: A Very Short Introduction looks at the many different forms of writing that have been called ‘poetry’—from the Greeks to the present day. As well as questioning what poetry is, it asks what poetry is for, and considers contemporary debates on its value. Is there a universality to poetry? Does it have a duty of public utility and responsibility?

Nagarajan, Vijaya. Feeding a Thousand Souls. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195170825.003.0011.

Full text
Abstract:
The Hindu notion of “feeding a thousand souls” each day as a ritual duty is central to the creation of the kōlam. This chapter traces this idea of “feeding a thousand souls” to ancient Sanskrit literature, Manu’s Code of Law, and the Mahabharata. There are five sacrifices or offerings that a householder should perform daily to alleviate the karmic debt of daily living: feed the animals, give food away until there is none left, feed the ancestors, feed the gods and goddesses, and offer hospitality to unexpected guests. In recent times, the material used to make the kōlam has changed from edible rice flour to inedible stone flour and acrylic stick-ons. This chapter explores the consequences of this change.

Full text
Abstract:
This article offers a critical overview of the major normative theories of political legitimacy from the seventeenth century to the present day, with a special focus on the leading representatives of the social contract tradition: the voluntarist theory, according to which legitimate political authority must derive from the free choices of its subjects; and the natural duty theory, which holds that a state’s legitimacy depends on the extent to which its institutions are just, regardless of whether it has been freely authorized by its subjects. The article then explores the prospects of a hybrid theory that would combine elements of the two and concludes by examining the ways in which the various conceptions of state legitimacy under consideration might be applied or adapted to the case of supranational political institutions.

Byrd, James P. Jonathan Edwards, War, and the Bible. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190249496.003.0012.

Full text
Abstract:
James P. Byrd reminds us of the militaristic context in which Jonthan Edwards lived. Edwards himself was fully aware of the rivalry between Catholic France and Protestant England, and he saw the battles waged between these two powers on American soil as part of a larger cosmic struggle. What is sometimes forgotten, however, is that Edwards brought meaning to this setting by probing Scripture for what it had to say about war. Edwards preached a number of sermons on war during his lifetime, and from Scripture he found support for just wars and for the duty of citizens to serve in battle. By exploring Edwards’ engagement with both the Old and New Testaments on war in his context, Byrd offers another angle on how Scripture shaped Edwards’ life and thought, just as the issues of his day affected his reading of Scripture.

Full text
Abstract:
What is victory in war? If one is fighting for a just cause, is it a dereliction of duty to settle for anything less than victory? Can victory ever be worthy of the sacrifices made in its pursuit? What is its relation to the peace that everyone hopes will come once fighting has ended? This introduction discusses how the book will tackle these questions. It briefly traces the ubiquity and import of ‘victory’ in the theoretical and practical discourses of war from ancient times to the present day. It then juxtaposes three prominent examples of victory’s importance: the classical use of trophies and triumphs, the emergence of ‘degrade and destroy’ as a rubric for interpreting the ‘War on Terror’, and finally the centrality of victory to any efforts to conceive of war in strategic, political, or ethical terms. We close by providing an overview of the chapters to follow.

Stapley, Jonathan A. Baby Blessing. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190844431.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
The baby blessings performed by Mormon church elders were among the very first rituals adopted by the church. While Joseph Smith revealed no explicit details of this ritual beyond its necessity, church members began to perform it on the eighth day of the child’s life and in many cases associated it with naming the child. Baby blessings functioned in the early Zion period to delineate citizenship in the salvific community. After the fall of the temporal Zion and the rise of the Nauvoo Temple cosmology, baby blessings functioned to annunciate the sealed position of the child in the priesthood of heaven. After the arrival in the Great Basin, two concurrent practices emerged: the blessing of children at home by family members and the blessing at church by ecclesiastical leaders. In the twentieth century, church leaders focused exclusively on blessings at church, recasting them as the solemn duty of priesthood-holding fathers.
