Ruddock, Joanna Mavis. "Dutch artists in England : examining the cultural interchange between England and the Netherlands in 'low' art in the seventeenth century." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/8632.

Full text
Abstract:
The seventeenth century was an incredibly fascinating time for art in England developmentally, especially because most of the artists that were receiving the commissions from English patrons and creating the art weren’t English, they were Dutch. Over this one hundred year period scores of Dutch artists migrated over from the Dutch Republic and showed England this Golden Age of painting that had established Dutch artists back in the Netherlands as pioneers in their line of work. In studies of Anglo-Dutch art, portraiture is a genre that has been widely researched; Peter Lely (a Dutch-born portraitist) is one of many widely acclaimed artists of this genre; comparative to many of the artworks and artists chosen for this research. Generally Anglo-Dutch relations, politically, economically, religiously and of course culturally there was, during the seventeenth century, so much going on between these two nations. Did this intense ever-changing relationship have an impact on that the other ‘low’ genres of art that was produced throughout this century? This research involves understanding and thinking about the impact of the cultural exchange that took place between England and the Netherlands in the seventeenth century on ‘low’ art – marine, landscape and still life painting. This research entails thinking about the origins of these genres as well as looking at individual paintings on a detailed basis and understanding how this cultural interchange manifests and translates itself through visual motifs – objects (large and small), stylistic characteristics and theme of the painting. Various themes and interpretations - in particular iconography and iconology, descriptive versus narrative art and national identity - have been explored and considered in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of the literature that already exists for this art in an effort to consider something new but to also interpret the paintings in a different way – this research has considered these paintings through the visual elements and has explained the cultural significance they provide.

van, Raamsdonk Esther Maria Jacoba. "Milton, Marvell, and Anglo-Dutch relations." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/25940.

Full text
Abstract:
This study argues for a more widely-conceived cultural sphere that allows the complex and multifarious interactions of both English and Dutch cultures in the early modern period to be explored more fully. My lenses are the works of John Milton and Andrew Marvell, and the relations that they and their work had with the United Provinces and its people. The thesis has a two-part structure. The first half introduces Dutch contexts, being a brief introduction to major areas of early modern Dutch culture, while the second shows how these contexts were influential on, and reflected by, Milton and Marvell. The first four chapters therefore consider areas that had an impact on England and its political and literary writers. These include, in Chapter I, stereotypes and first impressions of the Dutch Republic in English travelogues; representations of the Dutch in these works often surfaced in satirical work on the Dutch during the Anglo-Dutch Wars. Another concern is the literary milieu of the United Provinces, including print culture, literary circles, and ideas of educational reform. Other chapters in Part I discuss two highly influential aspects of Dutch religious life, Arminianism and toleration - both of which had repercussions for Protestantism in England - politics and trade, in particular works on Dutch republicanism and trade, in which England became the United Provinces’ greatest rival. Part II then explores Dutch culture, nation and stereotyping in Milton and Marvell. It demonstrates the far-reaching involvement of Dutch printing culture, especially visible in the publication history of Milton’s Defenses. It also interrogates literary similarities in the works of two Dutch authors, Constantijn Huygens and Joost van den Vondel, with Milton’s Paradise Lost and Marvell’s Upon Appleton House, respectively. The last two chapters identify traces of Dutch Arminianism and toleration in Milton’s Samson Agonistes, Marvell’s Remarks, and Rehearsal Transpros’d, part I and II; and compare versions of republicanism in Samson Agonistes and Vondel’s Samson, of Heilige Wraak, as well as discussing Anglo-Dutch rivalry in their works. This thesis demonstrates the deep and abiding importance of Anglo-Dutch relations to the works of two canonical English authors. Literary, intellectual and politico-religious exchange between England and the United Provinces was more entrenched than it has previously been portrayed.

Deakin, Frank Robert. "Anglo-Dutch trade flows 1955-75 : their effects on, and consequences for, Dutch port development and planning." Thesis, University of Hull, 1985. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:8303.

Full text
Abstract:
In the last few decades Dutch port planning has increasingly become dominated by the spectacular growth of the main port in the Dutch national seaport range, Rotterdam. The success of this port has resulted in it becoming a model for seaport development not only in the Netherlands, but also world-wide. There have even been recent suggestions by port planners in the Netherlands that development of other seaports in the national range should cease, as all future trade could be adequately accommodated by the main port. Anglo-Dutch trade flows passing through the Dutch seaports over the twenty years during which the main growth in total trade took place are examined in depth, with particular emphasis on their effects on Dutch seaport development. To retain proper perspective, and at the same time provide a comprehensive outline, this is continually set against total trade flows passing through Dutch seaports over the same period. The position at the start of this period is outlined in the first chapter. Movements in total trade are examined in detail over the twenty year period in the next Chapter. Chapter three deals with the changes in Anglo-Dutch trade during this time, while the following two chapters deal mainly with the relationship between the movements in trade and Dutch port development over the-period. Finally current Dutch port planning is examined in the light of the movements in trade flows. The main conclusions reached are that the smaller Dutch ports are of crucial and increasing importance to Anglo-Dutch trade, yet planners appear to be unaware of this. Should the development of the smaller ports cease, it would have disastrous effects on Anglo-Dutch trade. Comprehensive studies of trade flows with individual forelands can provide important indicators for seaport planning.

Arman, Sayyed Aziz. "Macroeconomic adjustments and oil revenue fluctuations : the case of Iran 1960-1990." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/335.

Full text
Abstract:
In an oil exporting developing country the issue of how to stabilise the domestic economy from oil market volatilities has been a big concern for both scholars and policy makers during the last two decades. Modelling the behaviour of key arguments involved in the transmission mechanism of oil revenues into the domestic economy is a necessary introduction to dealing with this problem. On the specification point of view, previous empirical works in this area show little concern over a process that takes the variables back to their steady state positions. This leaves long run equilibrium values of the variables involved in this processes undefined. This thesis attempts to provide a careful analysis with empirical evidence of the issue of the macroeconomic effects of oil revenue fluctuations on key economic variables such as domestic and foreign prices, money demand equation, exchange rates and nonoil gdp growth set in a Dutch Disease framework for the Iranian economy during 1960-1990 period. The analysis, using annual data, employs modern econometric techniques (such as cointegration and error correction) to examine dynamics (short run) and static (long run) components of:these variables in connection with oil revenue fluctuations. Two modified versions of the Purchasing Power Parity and conventional money demand relationships are used to model black market exchange rate and monetary aspects of oil revenue changes, respectively. To model domestic price movements, we experiment with 2 long run equilibrium positions, inverted money demand function and reversed PPP relationship. PPP appears as a valid model of the long run black market exchange rate and domestic prices determination. We also find strong supportive evidence for conventional model of real money balances. The main conclusions are: increases in oil revenue (i) depress black market exchange rate asymmetrically; (ii) suppress domestic inflation directly and then pull it up indirectly through higher foreign inflation and a more depressed exchange rate; (iii) have a contractionary effect on non-oil real gdp growth; and (iv) change real money balances with a small elasticity.

Wintle, Michael J. "Aspects of religion and society in the province of Zeeland (Netherlands) in the nineteenth century." Thesis, University of Hull, 1985. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:11544.

Full text
Abstract:
The body of the thesis has three major components: an assessment of the state of historical work and historical thinking concerning Zeeland since 1800; a study of church affiliation, and reactions to secularization; and an attempt to gauge the effects of religious attitudes on the socioeconomic development of the province in the nineteenth century. An examination of the existing literature reveals a 'received opinion' on the socio-economic history of Zeeland, namely that there was a conservative, traditional mentality among the inhabitants, expressed in religious attitudes, which was a significant contributory cause of the province's mediocre economic performance since 1800. There follows a survey of nineteenth century Zeeland in its demographic, social, economic, and political aspects. A systematic examination of the growth and/or decline of the various religious denominations is conducted. In the face of secularization, the orthodox Calvinist groups and the Roman Catholics were better able to maintain their position than the mainstream Calvinist Hervormde Kerk or the smaller Protestant denominations. This conclusion is confirmed by a number of secondary sources concerning secularization. In order to determine the effects of religious principles on socio-economic affairs, certain issues in Zeeland are selected for analysis. These include relations between Protestants and Catholics, certain principles held by the orthodox Calvinists, the role of the churches as a (service) sector in the local economy, and religious intervention in local politics. The conclusion is reached that although it was indeed possible for religious principles to affect -detrimentally - the local economy, this was not the case in the nineteenth century in Zeeland. In conclusion, a modest contribution is made to several wide-ranging historical debates, and a number of subjects for further research are designated.

Verhoeven, J. W. M. "Perceptual aspects of Dutch intonation." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/20265.

Full text
Abstract:
The experimental work reported in this dissertation is aimed at investigating the perceptual relevance of pitch movement alignment to the characterization of the hat pattern, which is one of the most frequently used intonation patterns in Dutch. After a general discussion of the theoretical issues involved, the alignment of rising pitch movements in the hat pattern is examined by means of a 2AX discrimination experiment and associated labelling task. The results of these experiments provide no indication of a reliable discrimination of rise-alignment, nor do they provide evidence that the hat pattern is categorized on the basis of rise-alignment differences. Subsequently, the discrimination of falling pitch movements in the same intonation pattern is investigated. The results of this experiment are compatible with a categorization of falling movements in terms of an early and a late category. On the basis of these findings it is concluded that the precise location of the falls is relevant to the perceptual identity of the hat pattern. The specification of rise-alignment, however, is not relevant in this perspective. Finally, the just noticeable difference of both rise and fall-alignment is established by a discrimination experiment, which shows a differential discrimination threshold for both types of pitch movements. This threshold difference is accounted for in terms of pyscho-acoustic and linguistic factors. Two follow-up studies confirm this finding, but rules out some of the psycho-acoustic hypotheses.

Chapman, David. "Patterning the Dutch Compact City." Licentiate thesis, Bartlett School of Planning University College London, 2001. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:ltu:diva-65314.

Abstract:
A major challenge to town planners in Britain is to help fulfil current and future housing need in a sustainable manner and avoid excessive development land take. This thesis therefore establishes what future development models are currently under debate and undertakes extensive research into Governments preferred option the 'Compact City'. Research focuses on empirical data for sustainable development and arguments for/against a policy of urban intensification. On conclusion that research alone fails to provide a sufficient basis for promoting a policy of 'Compact Cities', research emphasis was placed on the Dutch planning system, which has promoted such a policy for over a quarter of a century. Dutch experience was used to answer many unresolved arguments surrounding the 'Compact City' and an investigation was undertaken into how the Dutch have made this policy successful. In light of the fact that Dutch experience has shown that high quality urban housing is fundamental to attracting residents back to cities, an investigation of current UK generic housing models was undertaken and these were tested against sustainable density research and UK/Dutch design advice. On comparison it was established that many failed both tests and it was established that additional housing types could be required under a policy of 'Compact Cities'. An alternative development brief for additional housing models was therefore developed and this brief was investigated through the design of three alternative housing types. In final conclusion it was proposed that the Dutch treatment of density could provide a model for future planning in England and their design principles could aid the creation of alternative urban housing types.

Knoester, Micha. "Framing the Black Pages of Dutch History : Depictions of the Indonesian Decolonization War and its Afterlife in Dutch Opinion Journals and Dutch Social Memory." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Hugo Valentin-centrum, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-370100.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents the ways in which four major Dutch opinion journals have depicted the war of decolonization between the Netherlands and Indonesia and its afterlife in the years 1994, 1995, 2005, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2016. More specifically, through a textual analysis of 99 articles, it investigates which frames were attributed to the war by the four journals and which arguments were used to support these evaluations. Combining theories of social memory and the media’s relationship with the public, the results are linked to the academic debate on the Dutch social memory of the war of decolonization. The findings reveal that the examined opinion journals either frame the war positively or negatively, but rarely neutrally. In addition, great continuity and stability in the ways in which the journals framed the event was found, as the tone of the articles essentially did not change between 1994 and 2016. Due to the similar topics discussed and arguments given, it is also argued that the debate which took place in the Dutch opinion journals can be understood as very similar to the academic debate on the Dutch social memory of the war of decolonization.

Abstract:
This work provides a survey of Dutch literature translated into Swedish between 1830 and 1995 in order to investigate the mechanisms and selection criteria that determined the reception given this literature in the Swedish literary field. The introduction briefly sketches intercultural relations between Sweden and the Low Countries until 1830. The second chapter traces the growth of Dutch as a subject in Swedish universities, and Dutch literature in Swedish reference works, literary histories, cultural publications, radio and television. To the extent that rules of secrecy have permitted, the Nobel Prize candidacies of Dutch and Flemish writers have also been examined. The third chapter provides a commentary on the appended bibliography of translations from Dutch into Swedish during the period 1830-1995. Tables indicate distributory percentages of translated works as regards men and women, Dutch and Flemish authors, or adult literature, children's literature and comic strips. A consideration of number of translated titles per author and works with the greatest number of editions allows us to determine the types of literature most sought after. A division into quality categories, presented in tabular form, indicates the relative distribution of translations from 1830 to 1995 into entertaining works and quality literature, respectively. The fourth chapter investigates the reception of five Dutch post-war authors in Sweden, based on analyses of book reviews and reader interviews. It becomes clear that medieval trade links between Scandinavia and the Low Countries had a linguistic impact, one that subsequently inspired Scandinavian philologists interested in Nordic languages, English and German to investigate Frisian, Low German and Dutch, as well. As a result, by the turn of the century Swedish university students of German were being taught Middle Dutch and Modern Dutch, as well. At the same time, Dutch influence on 17th-century cultural life in Sweden had become of major interest to cultural historians. The Dutch literature translated during that century was primarily moralistic and didactic, but during the latter half of the 19th century, translations began to appear of a more entertaining nature - historical novels and stories about the common people of the Netherlands and Flanders. In Swedish book reviews, these texts were frequently compared to Dutch painting. By the end of the 19th and early 20th century, translations included novels dealing with contemporary matters, such as the womens question, the peace movement and social issues such as socialism and colonialism. A small group of academics and literary specialists were by then working for a literary Nobel Prize for the Dutch part of the world. Nevertheless, the translations produced during 1920-1950 were primarily a question of entertaining literature. During the 1930s more translations began to appear of literature for children and adolescents, a movement that intensified during the 50s, so that today such areas account for more than half of the literature translated from Dutch. From the 1930s until her retirement in 1961, the Dutch foreign lecturer Martha A. Muusses played a central role for Swedish awareness of serious Dutch - although not Flemish - literature. During the 60s, deliberate Dutch and Flemish economic commitments produced an increase in the amount of serious literature translated from Dutch to Swedish. By the 70s this shift was facilitated by the growing number of enthousiastic translators, backed up by informative articles written by Dutch and Flemish professors. They were driven not least by the desire to see the Nobel Prize in literature at last go to a work in Dutch. Moreover, new enthousiastic supporters from the heart of the Swedish literary world would join them in the 80s and 90s. Although the Swedish translations from Dutch still contain large elements of children's literature, anti-war tracts, works of social criticism, literature about the situation of women, and works dealing with the lives and customs of the people in the Netherlands and Flanders, a noticeable shift has taken place towards the type of literature appreciated by literary critics - nor is this latter type without its appreciative readers in the public at large. In sum, the reception of Dutch literature in Sweden from the 19th century to 1995 has primarily shifted from literature of a moral and religious nature, via a literature of entertainment, to a more serious literature, a shift in wich the commitment of translators and Dutch and Flemish cultural intermediaries, together with economic support, has played a crucial role.

Abstract:
Erich Mayer is not considered as one of South Africa's well-known and significant artists. Regardless of this, South Africa has inherited a few thousand drawings and watercolour paintings from Mayer that are of incalculable value to historians and cultural historians. His work has also not been "discovered" and exploited by architectural historians interested in South African vernacular architecture. Mayer visited various regions in South Africa and made drawings of the simple vernacular homesteads and other structures he saw on the farms and in the smaller villages and hamlets. Most of the buildings have now probably disappeared and the drawings are the only evidence of building types that otherwise could only have survived through oral traditions and legends. The buildings vary from beehive structures covered with grass mats in the N orth West, "kapsteil" dwellings in N amaqualand, to Bushveld dwellings with gables and thatched roofs. Mayer also made a contribution to the recording ofthe crude shelters the prisoners of war erected in the prisoner of war camp on St Helena, where he was sent as prisoner of war during the Anglo-Boer War (1899- 1902). Even though these structures were not erected on South African soil, they reflected the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the Boers who were imprisoned.

The Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire is an internationally widely used instrument assessing different eating styles that may contribute to weight gain and overweight: emotional eating, external eating, and restraint. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the 30-item German version of the DEBQ including its measurement invariance across gender, age, and BMI-status in a representative German population sample. Furthermore, we examined the distribution of eating styles in the general population and provide population-based norms for DEBQ scales. A representative sample of the German general population (N = 2513, age > 14 years) was assessed with the German version of the DEBQ along with information on sociodemographic characteristics and body weight and height. The German version of the DEQB demonstrates good item characteristics and reliability (restraint: α = .92, emotional eating: α = .94, external eating: α = .89). The 3-factor structure of the DEBQ could be replicated in exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses and results of multi-group confirmatory factor analyses supported its metric and scalar measurement invariance across gender, age, and BMI-status. External eating was the most prevalent eating style in the German general population. Women scored higher on emotional and restrained eating scales than men, and overweight individuals scored higher in all three eating styles compared to normal weight individuals. Small differences across age were found for external eating. Norms were provided according to gender, age, and BMI-status. Our findings suggest that the German version of the DEBQ has good reliability and construct validity, and is suitable to reliably measure eating styles across age, gender, and BMI-status. Furthermore, the results demonstrate a considerable variation of eating styles across gender and BMI-status.

Abstract:
We shall examine the Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) of Computer Science (CS) teachers concerning students’ Computational Thinking (CT) problem solving skills within the context of a CS course in Dutch secondary education and thus obtain an operational definition of CT and ascertain appropriate teaching methodology. Next we shall develop an instrument to assess students’ CT and design a curriculum intervention geared toward teaching and improving students’ CT problem solving skills and competences. As a result, this research will yield an operational definition of CT, knowledge about CT PCK, a CT assessment instrument and teaching materials and accompanying teacher instructions. It shall contribute to CS teacher education, development of CT education and to education in other (STEM) subjects where CT plays a supporting role, both nationally and internationally.

Abstract:
This study extends previous research on the effects of executive board diversity by examining the relationship between age-, gender- and nationality diversity on firm performance in the Netherlands. Based on a sample of 79 Dutch listed firms studied over the period 2010-2015, this study reports a positive link between board diversity and firm performance. Firm performance is, hereby, estimated using a forward-looking market performance measure (Tobin’s Q) and a backward-looking accounting measure (ROA).

Abstract:
Royal Dutch Shell, plc (Shell, or RDS) is the largest integrated company in the Oil and Gas sector, in terms of assets. Operates globally, with regard to the geography in which it has interests, and integrates the entire value chain into its business model. It tries to diversify its businesses with an increasingly important presence in the production of energy from renewable sources and in electricity retail. Shell (NYSE, Class A:US) has a REDUCE recommendation with a target price for 20YE of $ 33.58, a potential annualized return of 9.9%, with high risk. The divergence of the current price with our recommendation is due to: i) too optimistic prospects about the capacity to contain a second wave of COVID-19 globally; ii) the drop in consumption due to the confinement resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic; iii) supply glut of oil on the market; iv) the global economic recession environment; v) some financial leverage compared to the main direct competitors; vi) the need for high levels of costs in optimizing the asset portfolio through expensive acquisitions and the sale of assets that, until recently, were seen as strategic; vii) low prospects of a sustainable rise in oil price. Management intends to increase its presence in the current context of energy transition to more environmentally sustainable sources.

Little, Andrew Ross. "British personnel in the Dutch navy, 1642-1697." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10036/67714.

Full text
Abstract:
An international maritime labour market study, the thesis focuses on the Dutch naval labour market, analysing wartime Zeeland admiralty crews. The research is based primarily on unique naval pay sources. Analysis of crew compositions has not been made on this scale in the period before. The 1667 Dutch Medway Raid is the starting point, where a few British played a leading role – amongst many others reported on the Dutch side. Pepys and Marvell primarily blamed their joining the enemy on the lure of superior Dutch payment. The thesis asks how many British there were really, how they came to be in Dutch service, and whether this involvement occurred, as indicated, at other times too. Part One is thematic and explores the background mechanisms of the maritime environment in detail, determining causation. First, the two naval recruitment systems are compared and completely reassessed in the light of state intervention in the trade sphere. Two new sets of ‘control’ data – naval wages and foreign shipping – are amongst the incentives and routes determined. British expatriate communities are examined as conduits for the supply of naval labour and civilian support. British personnel are compared and contrasted with other foreigners, against the background of Anglo-Dutch interlinkage and political transition from neutrality through conflict to alliance. Part Two is chronological, covering four major wars in three chapters. Micro-case studies assembled from the scattered record streams enable analysis of the crews of particular officers and ships. Seamen were an occupation that made them a very little known group: the thesis examines the different career types of British personnel of many different ranks, shedding light on their everyday lives. The thesis shows that British personnel were an integral part of Dutch crews throughout the period, even when the two nations were fighting each other. The basic need of subsistence labour for employment took precedence over allegiance to nation/ideology, demonstrating limitations in state power and the continual interdependence forced on the maritime powers through the realities of the labour market.

Li, Zhen. "Optimal design of Dutch auctions with discrete bid levels." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2010. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc28450/.

Full text
Abstract:
The theory of auction has become an active research area spanning multiple disciplines such as economics, finance, marketing and management science. But a close examination of it reveals that most of the existing studies deal with ascending (i.e., English) auctions in which it is assumed that the bid increments are continuous. There is a clear lack of research on optimal descending (i.e., Dutch) auction design with discrete bid levels. This dissertation aims to fill this void by considering single-unit, open-bid, first price Dutch auctions in which the bid levels are restricted to a finite set of values, the number of bidders may be certain or uncertain, and a secret reserve price may be present or absent. These types of auctions are most attractive for selling products that are perishable (e.g., flowers) or whose value decreases with time (e.g., air flight seats and concert tickets) (Carare and Rothkopf, 2005). I began by conducting a comprehensive survey of the current literature to identify the key dimensions of an auction model. I then zeroed in on the particular combination of parameters that characterize the Dutch auctions of interest. As a significant departure from the traditional methods employed by applied economists and game theorists, a novel approach is taken by formulating the auctioning problem as a constrained mathematical program and applying standard nonlinear optimization techniques to solve it. In each of the basic Dutch auction model and its two extensions, interesting properties possessed by the optimal bid levels and the auctioneer's maximum expected revenue are uncovered. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the major propositions where appropriate. The superiority of the optimal strategy recommended in this study over two commonly-used heuristic procedures for setting bid levels is also demonstrated both theoretically and empirically. Finally, economic as well as managerial implications of the findings reported in this dissertation research are discussed.
