Abstract:
Cell geometry has long been proposed to play a key role in the orientation of symmetric cell division planes. In particular, the recently proposed Besson–Dumais rule generalizes Errera’s rule and predicts that cells divide along one of the local minima of plane area. However, this rule has been tested only on tissues with rather local spherical shape and homogeneous growth. Here, we tested the application of the Besson–Dumais rule to the divisions occurring in the Arabidopsis shoot apex, which contains domains with anisotropic curvature and differential growth. We found that the Besson–Dumais rule works well in the central part of the apex, but fails to account for cell division planes in the saddle-shaped boundary region. Because curvature anisotropy and differential growth prescribe directional tensile stress in that region, we tested the putative contribution of anisotropic stress fields to cell division plane orientation at the shoot apex. To do so, we compared two division rules: geometrical (new plane along the shortest path) and mechanical (new plane along maximal tension). The mechanical division rule reproduced the enrichment of long planes observed in the boundary region. Experimental perturbation of mechanical stress pattern further supported a contribution of anisotropic tensile stress in division plane orientation. Importantly, simulations of tissues growing in an isotropic stress field, and dividing along maximal tension, provided division plane distributions comparable to those obtained with the geometrical rule. We thus propose that division plane orientation by tensile stress offers a general rule for symmetric cell division in plants.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This article traces the emergence of francophone feminist theology within the dominant paradigms of Quebec theology: modernization and liberation. Embryonic expressions of feminist theological concerns are found in women's writings in the late 1960s and the early 1970s. An examination of the writings of three senior feminist theologians (Elisabeth Lacelle, Monique Dumais, Marie Gratton Boucher) suggests that their work is shaped by the common concerns and distinctive nuances which they bring to the newly emergent feminist paradigm. Finally, it will be argued that the appearance of intergenerational tensions among women doing theology create new challenges that likely will modify the feminist paradigm.

Abstract:
According to the CARIN theory of Gagn? and Shoben (1997), conceptual relations play an important role in compound interpretation. This study develops three measures gauging the role of conceptual relations, and pits these measures against measures based on latent semantic analysis (Landauer & Dumais, 1997). The CARIN measures successfully predict response latencies in a familiarity categorization task, in a semantic transparency task, and in visual lexical decision. Of the measures based on latent semantic analysis, only a measure orthogonal to the conceptual relations, which instead gauges the extent to which the concepts for the compound?s head and the compound itself are discriminated, also reached significance. Results further indicate that in tasks requiring careful assessment of the meaning of the compound, general knowledge of conceptual relations plays a central role, whereas in the lexical decision task, attention shifts to co-activated meanings and the specifics of the conceptual relations realized in the compound?s modifier family.

Abstract:
The traditional name-based approach to storing and retrieving information in computers in now being supplemented on some systems by a spatial alternative – often driven by an office or desktop metaphor. These systems attempt to take advantage of the important role that location plays in retrieving objects in the real world (i.e. we must know where things are in order to retrieve them). This paper extends recent research by Jones and Dumais (1986) which used paper and pencil simulations to compare reference by name versus location. A computer filing system was developed in which folders could be stored and retrieved using combinations of location and name cues. Accuracy of location reference in a Location-only condition was initially comparable to that in a Name-only condition, but declined much more rapidly with increases in the number of objects. Adding location to name information did not improve retrieval accuracy, but was costly in terms of initial specification time. These results call into question the generality of spatial metaphors for information retrieval applications.

Abstract:
The colours of poem and paint: Antjie Krog in conversation with Marlene Dumas Antjie Krog engages South African born painter Marlene Dumas in an intertextual dialogue in her most recent anthology Kleur kom nooit alleen nie. This series of poems is titled “skilderysonnette” (sonnets of a painting). Six of the nine of Krog’s “word paintings” are eponymous with Dumas’s paintings and therefore almost require an examination of the interplay of the respective texts. This article examines the relationship between the relevant poems and paintings. The specific conversation between Krog’s word texts and Dumas’s paintings within the context of Krog’s anthology ultimately indicates intriguing similarities. It includes, inter alia, the struggle of both artists with the problem of “belonging” – Krog from an African perspective and Dumas from a European angle. Both are also concerned with the politics of colour. The politics of sex also figures in both their oeuvres in the third instance. The complexity of sexuality, eroticism and love is examined in the work of both these artists and is ultimately expressed in the voice/vision of the emancipated woman.

WASHINGTON, SALIM. "The Avenging Angel of Creation/Destruction: Black Music and the Afro-technological in the Science Fiction of Henry Dumas and Samuel R. Delany." Journal of the Society for American Music 2, no. 2 (May 2008): 235–53. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/s1752196308080085.

Abstract:
AbstractThis essay explores the thematic use of music in the science-fiction writings of two African American authors, Henry Dumas and Samuel R. Delany. Each author visited this theme in more than one work, and in at least one work centered the Afro-technological focus upon a special musical instrument: the “afro horn” in Dumas's story “Will the Circle Be Unbroken?” and a machete/flute in Samuel R. Delany's novel The Einstein Intersection. Both writers treat music itself, without regard to a material instrument, as a technology. Dumas depicted black music as a tool that enabled black people to kill their enemies, and Delany represented music as a technology capable of avenging the wrongs committed against the politically and socially marginalized. Whereas Dumas's protagonists were more likely to be social pariahs because of their class or their sexual orientation than because of race, his descriptions specifically reference black music and its attendant rituals. Both writers portray music as a technology capable of creating and healing as well as avenging and destroying.

Abstract:
The article studies the problem of interpretation of literary source in visual creative work of A.N. Benois. There are identified and analyzed new sources of his works — historical novels by A. Dumas, père. The question about the role of the novels by Alexandre Dumas devoted to the history of France of the 17th and 18th centuries in creative work of Alexandre Benois has never become the object of research. The relevance of this article is determined by this fact. The scientific novelty of this article lies in revealing new literary sources of creative work of A. Benois — Dumas’s novels “Joseph Balsamo (Doctor’s Notes)” (1846—1848), “Louis XIV and his Century” (1844), “Louis XV and his Epoch” (1849) — and determining parallels between them and art practice of the artist: painting, graphics and art of book. The author analyses content of the artist’s memories, his literary works, diaries, as well as diaries by E. Lanceray, and complements these information details by a comparative textological analysis of Benois’s memoirs and Dumas’s novels in Russian translations. This method allows to deepen the formal analysis of A. Benois’s works (primarily the two Versailles series) and partially reveal the mechanism of complex figurative synthesis in the artistic consciousness at the turn of the 19th—20th centuries, on the basis of which they were created, to expand the existing perceptions about the literary sources of the artist’s creative work. The author concludes that the novels by Dumas “Joseph Balsamo”, “Louis XIV and his Century” had an influence on the artist’s perception of the theme of court culture and Versailles in the historical, cultural and natural aspects. It was reflected in the appeal to the plot of “fish feeding” in the late 1890s, in the formation of the images of Versailles and King Louis XIV in old age. The article also finds that the novel “Joseph Balsamo” had an influence on Benois’s creation of Trianon’s everyday image in the past. At the same time, the artist turned to the interpretation of the image of Marquise de Pompadour as “sultana” under the influence of Dumas’s novel “Louis XV and his Epoch”. In addition, the three musketeers — characters of Dumas’s novel with the same name — are placed in the drawing of the title page of Benois’s “Versailles” album. It is important that it does not come about direct illustration of the novels, but about an artistic process of creating a figurative system of images and forming the artist’s stylistics.

Abstract:
Audretsch & Feldman (2004) argue that an agglomeration is a collection of localized firms with a common focus. As firms thrive, resources are attracted to the region. They state that, if entrepreneurship serves as a mechanism for knowledge spillovers, measures of entrepreneurial activity should be linked positively to regional growth performance. In Schumpeterian economics the engine of economic development is entrepreneurial innovation. Creative destruction makes way for new innovations and growth. In this study, we simultaneously examine the regional entrepreneurial activity and regional growth activity in Finland. A further aim of the study was to find out if entrepreneurial activity and growth activity also play a deagglomerating role. We find, first, that the indicators used are very well suited to measure the dynamic environment, especially in manufacturing, since the regions with the most dynamic environment were areas with high small-business activity. Furthermore, the study indicates that growth activity should be taken into account when examining regional development by means of the concept of the dynamic environment. Secondly, we find that entrepreneurial activity and growth activity decreases regional specialization, i.e., the regions with the highest regional specialization are characterized by the lowest levels of entrepreneurial activity and growth activity. Our study confirms with Finnish data the findings of Dumais et al. (2002) that new plant births play a deagglomerating role. The results of the study indicate also that growth activity tends to act to reduce regional specialization. As a whole, the results suggest that the regional specialization is the result of a dynamic process in which the combination of plant births and growth act together.

Abstract:
Abstract In Florence, where he stayed between 1840 and 1843, Alexandre Dumas received a very prestigious editorial commission, La Galerie de Florence, to illustrate the collection of the Grand Duke’s Gallery. Dumas produced a history of the Medici family, a history of painting from the Egyptians to the present, and Histoire des peintres. Several decades later he reprised some of these texts in Trois maîtres (1861) and Italiens et Flamands (1862), which profiled different painters. To understand Dumas’s selection of artists, we must consider an intermediate work of his that has so far been forgotten: his Histoire des peintres published in feuilleton format in the pages of Le Mousquetaire, a journal he founded and edited between 1853 and 1857. This study briefly sets out the history of this work, focuses on some elements of its commentary, and identifies it as an interesting case of pseudo-scientific popularization spread via new channels of mass communication.

Abstract:
In this first complete English translation of one of Alexandre Dumas’s “causeries,” a kind of familiar essay likely originated by Dumas, the author provides one of the earliest examples of gastronomic journalism. Part memoir, part travelogue, part critique, it recounts the origins of Dumas’s love of good food, tells of his early experiences with cooking, narrates a culinary adventure in North Africa (where he learned the local technique for roasting a lamb in its skin, which he later applied to rabbit), and offers advice for ordering a meal at the Restaurant de France in Paris. The second part of the essay describes his quest for a recipe for the “real Neapolitan macaroni” among Italian celebrities then living in Paris (including a failed attempt to acquire one from the composer Rossini), and finishes with purchasing recommendations and a detailed recipe for the dish for a party of twelve.

Abstract:
This essay explores the interplay of literary and social memory in Lorenzo Carcaterra's prison and revenge memoir, Sleepers (1995), in particular its appropriation of Alexander Dumas's The Count of Monte Cristo (1844–45) as both a literary template and a political marker. Monte Cristo is the central text in Carcaterra's rewriting of a long tradition of “bad-boy” narratives depicting juvenile dispossession, crime, and redemptive vigilantism. The essay also traces the transatlantic routes of Dumas in modern US popular culture, especially in Albert Kanter's Illustrated Classics, in light of Antonio Gramsci's theories of popular narrative and law.

Abstract:
This article presents the role of Georges Dumas in the development of Brazilian psychology in the first half of the twentieth century. France had at that moment a major influence on Brazilian cultural and scientific development, including the field of psychology. Georges Dumas had a prominent presence in Brazil, acting as a gatekeeper when choosing French scholars to give conferences and classes in Brazil between 1908 and 1940 as a representative of the French cultural tradition. The bibliography of Georges Dumas’s Traité de Psychologie, published in 1922-1923, shows a selection of Brazilian scholars who interacted with the author 1900’s ans 1940’s. The political context of French-Brazilian exchanges and the names of professors involved in the French mission in Brazil in the field of psychology were studied. The French cultural influence in Brazil is interpreted as a strategy aimed at contributing to the solution of Brazilian problems, and it helped to change the image of Brazil in Europe. In addition, scientific exchanges promoted the extension of the French diplomatic network.

Dyadyshcheva-Rosovetska, Juliya. "P. Kulish's "Ukraine" and folk dumas: linguistic and poetic analysis." Actual issues of Ukrainian linguistics theory and practice, no. 41 (2020): 79–104. http://dx.doi.org/10.17721/apultp.2020.41.79-104.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the study of Panteleimon Kulish's search for a productive model of development of the new Ukrainian literary language and ways of its enrichment, in particular at the expense of the language of folklore as an inexhaustible source. A linguistic and poetic analysis of Panteleimon Kulish's large-scale work "Ukraine: From the Beginning of Ukraine to Khmelnytsky's Father" and its comparison with some elements of the linguopoetics of folk dumas of the classical repertoire are presented. The real problems that arise in P. Kulish’s creative work when he tries to achieve a harmonious combination of authentic folk thought words and expressions and stylized author's innovations are demonstrated. The article shows the difficulties in the artist's selection of colored ethnographically linguistic material needed to create a folklore duma's color. The shortcomings of combining the author's elements with fragments of real dumas within one work of art are revealed. This technique is compared with the approach of Taras Shevchenko, who turned to "stylization" or "improvisation" in the folk spirit (M. Kotsyubynska) and isolated the resulting structures structurally, putting in the mouths of certain characters - the Blind or the Witch. The fundamental difference in the approaches to verbal creativity is differentiated on the one hand by the bearer of the oral-poetic tradition, which is only within the possibilities of Ukrainian folklore, and on the other - by the artist of the XIX century - its user, who perceives the folklore tradition not "from within" but "from outside" and addresses the entire literary heritage - domestic and world, as well as folklore - his own and other peoples. The counterproductiveness of some authorial experiments of P. Kulish on dumas samples is illustrated. Their results cannot be considered satisfactory due to illogicality, low intellectual saturation or from an aesthetic point of view. A somewhat excessive exoticism of the author's innovations has been recorded, which attracts the reader's undue attention to them and distorts his perception of the artistic fabric of the poetic work. The question of the specifics of the experimental text of P. Kulish is formulated. What prevails here is the scientific reconstruction of lost fragments of true dumas, the restoration of time-destroyed parts of the national epic, or the demonstration of the author's creative ability to practice folklore improvisation in a work of art. Depending on the answers, a comprehensive assessment can be made.

Abstract:
In a crucial moment from Henry Dumas's short story “strike and fade” (C. 1965-68), an unnamed narrator observes what is left of a city in the immediate aftermath of an urban uprising: “The word is out. Cool it. We on the street, see. Me and Big Skin. We watch the cops. They watch us. People comin and goin. That fire truck still wrecked up side the buildin. Papers say we riot, but we didn't riot. We like the VC, the Viet Cong. We strike and fade” (111). The staccato established by the short phrasings, fragments, and use of the vernacular evokes a sense of anxiety, contributing to what Carter Mathes aptly describes as Dumas's “aural portrait of black urban space under siege” (91). Dumas's careful attunement to the rhythmic feelings, or grooves, of the everyday adds texture to that opening pronouncement, “The word is out,” which, in this instance, registers a temperate disposition simultaneously alert and giving off the impression that one is maintaining the order of things. Everything will have changed by the time the phrase returns in the short story's penultimate paragraph, when the narrator and Big Skin are no longer eyeing the police but are instead woven into the collective action of an indeterminate “we.” Dumas writes, “The word is out. Burn, baby, burn. We on the scene. The brothers. Together. Cops and people goin and comin. Some people got good loot, some just hoofin it. A police cordon comin. We shadows on the wall. Light comin towards us. We fade” (115). The political message seems obvious. It's the post-Watts 1960s and disenchantment with the civil rights movement is setting in. For an emerging generation of radical black artists and activists, the time has come for people to . . . confer on the possibility of Blackness and the inevitability of Revolution. (Giovanni)

Abstract:

Abstract:
Liszt’s interest in the figure of Jeanne d’Arc accompanied the composer throughout his life. He chose a poem by Alexandre Dumas père for the text of the romance dramatique Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher. After the first version for voice and piano published in 1846, the composer asked August Conradi for an instrumental arrangement. In 1858 Liszt planned a stage work on the subject of Jeanne d’Arc, but did not fulfill the plan and confined himself to revising the romance. In the 1860s Liszt composed three different new settings of Dumas’s text but never published them. After a rewriting in 1874 for voice and piano (or orchestra), the composer finally published his song (1876). With this, the list of the multiple settings is not yet complete. Some years ago the Fondazione Istituto Liszt (Bologna) bought an autograph manuscript for organ not included in the catalogues of Liszt’s works. This study reconstructs the story of the composition and performance of Jeanne d’Arc with organ accompaniment.

Abstract:
Abstract Ten fishmeal samples (hidden duplicates of 4 meals plus 2 high-protein meals as a Youden pair), tryptophan, and nicotinic acid were analyzed by 18 laboratories using the Dumas method. Thirteen of the laboratories also analyzed the same 12 samples using their current Kjeldahl method. Recoveries (± sR) of tryptophan and nicotinic acid were 99.3 ± 1.04 and 98.8 ± 2.11 by Dumas and 97.1 ± 3.03 and 74.6 ± 26.76 by Kjeldahl. The Dumas method gave significantly greater values (P < 0.001) than the Kjeldahl method. For fishmeals, Kjeldahl N 0.989 of Dumas N (P < 0.001). A similar proportionate difference (0.984 of Dumas N) was observed with tryptophan. Most laboratories failed to determine nicotinic acid correctly by Kjeldahl. For fishmeals, the relative standard deviations for repeatability and reproducibility were for Dumas 1.48 and 2.01% and Kjeldahl 1.62 and 2.37%, respectively. A single analysis conducted in 2 laboratories should not differ by more than 5.63% of the mean value when measured by Dumas or by more than 6.64% by Kjeldahl. It is concluded that with fishmeal, Dumas gives a more reliable measure of organic nitrogen than Kjeldahl, and, therefore, Dumas should be the method of choice.
