Abstract:
The reason why I chose this topic is not nor the complexity of global world neither the growing pressure on quick and effective managerial resolutions as it is mentioned in similar scripts. Surprisingly, the main impulse was the synergy of three principal aspects of my master study. First millstone was a study of main specialization by its self: Information management, on cathedra of System analysis, faculty of Informatics and Statistics, Economic University in Prague. The second angle is the minor specialization of the study: Retail business, on cathedra of Commercial business, faculty of International relations, Economic University in Prague. Last but no least aspect is simultaneously exercised practice in field of managing the project ICT/ IS and logistic operations. Prime aim of this work is a concept of presentation of DSS, which is intended to support the decision-making process of development of a retail chain of fictitious firm JK, a.s. Partial goals heading to fulfilment of a prime aim are: determination of a theoretical expectations, methods and methodic needed to proposal of DSS, description, and analysis of company and retail chain, procedural analyze of decision making-process of retail chain development, concept of system dynamic model, which forms the root of DSS and the concept of DSS by its self. Secondary aim is to gather satisfactory amount of theoretical and practical details for presentation of project DSS to management of the company. The biggest benefits of this work are fulfilment of a prime and secondary aim, together with the project DSS it self, which could be partly applied for the support of the decision-making process in the company. Further assets for the firm JK, a.s. are conclusions of some captures, which could be used for planning of marketing campaigns, generating Business Knowledge Base, evaluation of affectivity of sales and human resources, etc. The final bonus for the author of this work is the personal progression, profession growth, caused by gain of new

Abstract:
This diploma thesis focuses on a model-oriented system for decision support. The main contribution of the thesis consists in creating a system simulating energy saving which would result from the purchase of plastic windows and/or of a heat pump. The basis of the simulator is a functional model consisting of individual variables and connections between them and created in compliance with relevant notation. The thesis describes and illustrates not only the model structure itself, but, in the same time, also its logic on which basis the corresponding energetic saving is calculated after entry of necessary initial values. The diploma thesis includes, in addition to the model, also the description and the graphical representation of the created user interface which provides the user with easy entry of parameters and clear display of results. The introductory part of this work introduces the basic theoretical terms and approaches concerning the system dynamics together with its principles. The following part is dedicated to the description of the enterprise for which the system for decision support was created. The final part contains the above mentioned model, its structure and description, as well as the created user interface.

Abstract:
Regulatory compliance is an important and growing topic that requires companies to adapt to rules and regulations. All organizations that want to be active in the business market must follow and adapt to these rules regardless of company size and capital. The consequences of not following the regulations are to a large extent fines or increased transaction costs. This study focuses on the usefulness of agile approaches in compliance and specifically PCI DSS regulations. PCI DSS is a framework that regulates the credit card payment system used by an organization. All security involving customer data during a card payment is also included in this ruleset. To execute the research on how agile methods function within compliance, a qualitative research strategy has been implemented. Empirical material has been collected through interviews with the company CGI. The respondents in this inquiry work in the compliance sector and have great knowledge of the subject. The result of the study show that respondents view agile methods within compliance projects in a positive light. That the obstacles experienced in these projects can be alleviated with the help of agile tools such as morning meetings and structured responsibilities.

The Archipelagian Approach, a proposed methodology for designing and implementing Decision Support Systems (DSS), attempts to integrate modular design and adaptive design. The approach is based on decomposing the proposed system's tasks into structured and nonstructured modules, evaluating the difficulty of implementing each module, and utilizing the estimated difficulty and the priority of each module to determine the best development sequence. The feasibility of making reliable and accurate predictions of implementation difficulty, a key requisite, was previously not verified. The study concludes that five of the eight factors considered exhibit sufficient reliability and validity as predictors to confirm the viability of the approach

Wagner, Katherine Mott. "Optimization of Disaggregated Space Systems Using the Disaggregated Integral Systems Concept Optimization Technology Methodology." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/99338.

Full text
Abstract:
This research describes the development and application of the Disaggregated Integral Systems Concept Optimization Technology (DISCO-Tech) methodology. DISCO-Tech is a modular space system design tool that focuses on the optimization of disaggregated and non-traditional space systems. It uses a variable-length genetic algorithm to simultaneously optimize orbital parameters, payload parameters, and payload distribution for space systems. The solutions produced by the genetic algorithm are evaluated using cost estimation, coverage analysis, and spacecraft sizing modules. A set of validation cases are presented. DISCO-Tech is then applied to three representative space mission design problems. The first problem is the design of a resilient rideshare-manifested fire detection system. This analysis uses a novel framework for evaluating constellation resilience to threats using mixed integer linear programming. A solution is identified where revisit times of under four hours are achievable for $10.5 million, one quarter of the cost of a system manifested using dedicated launches. The second problem applies the same resilience techniques to the design of an expanded GPS monitor station network. Nine additional monitor stations are identified that allow the network to continuously monitor the GPS satellites even when five of the monitor stations are inoperable. The third problem is the design of a formation of satellites for performing sea surface height detection using interferometric synthetic aperture radar techniques. A solution is chosen that meets the performance requirements of an upcoming monolithic system at 70% of the cost of the monolithic system.
Doctor of Philosophy
Civilians, businesses, and the government all rely on space-based resources for their daily operations. For example, the signal provided by GPS satellites is used by drivers, commercial pilots, soldiers, and more. Communications satellites provide phone and internet to users in remote areas. Weather satellites provide short-term forecasting and measure climate change. Because of the importance of these and other space systems, it is necessary that they are designed in an efficient, reliable, and cost-effective manner. The Disaggregated Integral Systems Concept Optimization Technology (DISCO-Tech) is introduced as a means of designing these space systems. DISCO-Tech optimizes various aspects of the space mission, including the number of satellites needed to complete the mission, the location of the satellites, and the sensors that each satellite needs to accomplish its mission. This dissertation describes how DISCO-Tech works, then applies DISCO-Tech to several example missions. The first mission uses satellites to monitor forest fires in California. In order to reduce the cost of this mission, the satellites share launch vehicles with satellites from other, unrelated missions. Next, DISCO-Tech is used to choose the placement of new ground stations for GPS satellites. Because GPS is an important asset, this study also assesses the performance of the network of ground stations when some of the stations are inoperable. Finally, DISCO-Tech is used to design a group of satellites that measure sea level, since sea level is important for climatology research. A design is presented for a group of satellites that perform these measurements at a lower cost than a planned mission that uses a single satellite.

Abstract:
The thesis is concerned with application of Decision Support Systems and Business Intelligence as a tool for decision-making support into processes of operational risk management in insurance company to improve them and reach a higher corporate performance. The goal of the thesis is to analyze a theory for a support of a process improvement design with the mentioned reach and to develop a design of improved operational risk management processes in a particular insurance company. The mean to reach goals is through-out a literature and articles research regarding a process improvement, decision-making, models and technologies of DSS and BI, and risk management. The theoretical framework is then used as back-bone for implementation of a practical part of innovated processes design. The thesis offers the analysis of an area of risk management processes improvement via DSS and BI in an insurance company that has been researched relatively little, but whose principles can be used for improvement projects in different areas too. A department of operational risk management in a certain insurance company obtains a complete design of innovated processes including DSS / BI application support specification which respects modern techniques of process improvements involving specific methods of decision-making quality. For the same department a part of the design was implemented -- Knowledge management system, that can be fully used. Introductory part of the thesis is concerned with techniques of business process improvement and its alignment with corporate performance. The next chapter describes specifics of operational risk management processes. In the third one models, techniques, information technologies of Decision Support Systems and Business Intelligence disciplines are analyzed. The practical part of the text starts with strategic analysis of the insurance company, proceeds with operational risk management processes analysis and reaches the design of innovated processes involving DSS and BI application support. Benefits of designed processes' changes are verified. In the conclusion a certain process change is accepted for the implementation and its results are described.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) represents a group of gastrointestinal disorders, affecting millions of people around the world, and, until now, have few effective treatments. Therefore, experimental models of colitis have contributed crucially to the study of pathophysiological events that occur in IBD, and also in the investigations for effective therapies that may prevent and/or treat these diseases. Recently, the human supplementation with polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as omega-3, has emerged and received much attention, because this lipid is a precursor of some chemical mediators involved in various cellular functions and in promoting the resolution of inflammation. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the kinetics of the production of some inflammatory mediators and cells involved in the model of acute and chronic colitis induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS), and to assess the role of anti-inflammatory lipid mediators derived from omega-3, AT-RvD1, RvD2 and 17R-HDHA, in different models of intestinal inflammation. Our results showed that neutrophil infiltration was predominant in the early stages of DSS-induced colitis, and this increase was accompanied by the production and expression of pro-inflammatory mediators, such as TNF-á, IL-12 and CXCL1/KC. Furthermore, we observed that during the recovery phase, the expression of inflammatory cytokines such as IL-10 and TGF-â was increased in the colonic tissue. On the other hand, the chronic phase was characterized by the massive release of pro-inflammatory mediators; however, with the co-production of anti-inflammatory cytokines and significant participation of macrophages and T lymphocytes, featuring intense inflammatory activity in the intestinal mucosa and chronicity of experimental colitis. In addition, we found that preventive systemic treatment with AT-RvD1, RvD2 or 17R-HDHA markedly prevented the disease activity, the colonic tissue damage and neutrophil infiltration in DSS or 2,4,6- trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS) in mice. Additionally, we showed that the beneficial effect of these lipid mediators was due to reduced production and expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines/chemokines, adhesion molecules, and the reduced activity of nuclear factor êB (NFêB). Finally, we demonstrated that the AT-RvD1, but not RvD2 or 17R-HDHA, reduced the secretion of pro-inflammatory mediators, in LPS-induced macrophages, in an ALX/FPR2 dependent manner. Moreover, the pharmacological blockade of ALX/FPR2 receptor significantly reversed the beneficial effects of AT-RvD1 in DSS-induced colitis. In conclusion, our results largely extended the knowledge about the model of DSS-induced colitis, and suggest important therapeutic implications. Finally, we demonstrated that AT-RvD1, RvD2 or 17R-HDHA can be promising candidates for the prevention and/or treatment of IBD.

Abstract:
In the present work the effect of isothermal ageing treatment on the microstructure and on the localized corrosion resistance of a duplex stainless steel (DSS) was investigated. Specimens taken from a hot rolled cylindrical duplex stainless bar with 22% Cr grade were solution annealed at 1050°
C and then sensitization heat treatments were conducted at 650, 725 and 800°
C with duration ranging from 100 to 31622 min. The microstructural changes were examined by the light optical microscopy (LOM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). XRD technique and EDS analysis were used for microstructural evolution. Double Loop Electrochemical Potentiodynamic Reactivation (DLEPR) and standard weight loss immersion acid tests were performed in order to determine the degree of sensitization (DOS) to intergranular corrosion. The surfaces remained after the DLEPR test and the weight loss immersion test were also examined to observe the attack locations and their relationship with the chromium depleted zones. The degree of sensitization is measured by determining the ratio of the maximum current generated by the reactivation (reverse) scan to that of the anodic (forward) scan, (Ir/Ia) x 100. Ir is very small (less than 10-5 A/cm2) for solution annealed samples at 1050°
C for 1 hr and those aged at 650°
C for 100 and 316 min after the solution heat treatment, with the Ir/Ia ratios of 0.027634%, 0.033428% and 0.058928% respectively. Hence these samples were considered as unsensitized and their microstructure was composed of primary ferrite and austenite. However, Ir increased to values as high as 10-2 A/cm2 and even approached Ia for all samples aged for other temperatures and times, associated with high Ir/Ia ratios. The increased degree of sensitization can be attributed to stronger effect of chromium and molybdenum depleted areas. The microstructure was composed of primary ferrite and austenite including also sigma phase and the secondary austenite that would be responsible for the localized chromium impoverishment. The time required for sensitization was shorter in samples aged at higher temperatures. Accordingly ageing times of 1000 min at 725°
C and of 316 min at 800°
C were sufficient, whereas times longer than 10000 min was needed to achieve a sensitized structure at 650°
C.

Abstract:
Ghrelin is a gut-brain peptide hormone that induces appetite, stimulates the release of growth hormone, and has recently been shown to ameliorate inflammation. Recent studies have suggested that ghrelin may play a potential role in inflammation-related diseases such as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). A previous study with ghrelin in the TNBS mouse model of colitis demonstrated that ghrelin treatment decreased the clinical severity of colitis and inflammation and prevented the recurrence of disease. Ghrelin may be acting at the immunological and epithelial level as the ghrelin receptor (GHSR) is expressed by immune cells and intestinal epithelial cells. The current project investigated the effect of ghrelin in a different mouse model of colitis using dextran sodium sulphate (DSS) – a luminal toxin. Two molecular weight forms of DSS were used as they give differing effects (5kDa and 40kDa). Ghrelin treatment significantly improved clinical colitis scores (p=0.012) in the C57BL/6 mouse strain with colitis induced by 2% DSS (5kDa). Treatment with ghrelin suppressed colitis in the proximal colon as indicated by reduced accumulative histopathology scores (p=0.03). Whilst there was a trend toward reduced scores in the mid and distal colon in these mice this did not reach significance. Ghrelin did not affect histopathology scores in the 40kDa model. There was no significant effect on the number of regulatory T cells or TNF-α secretion from cultured lymph node cells from these mice. The discovery of C-terminal ghrelin peptides, for example, obestatin and the peptide derived from exon 4 deleted proghrelin (Δ4 preproghrelin peptide) have raised questions regarding their potential role in biological functions. The current project investigated the effect of Δ4 peptide in the DSS model of colitis however no significant suppression of colitis was observed. In vitro epithelial wound healing assays were also undertaken to determine the effect of ghrelin on intestinal epithelial cell migration. Ghrelin did not significantly improve wound healing in these assays. In conclusion, ghrelin treatment displays a mild anti-inflammatory effect in the 5kDa DSS model. The potential mechanisms behind this effect and the disparity between these results and those published previously will be discussed.

Ghrelin did not significantly improve wound healing in these assays. In conclusion, ghrelin treatment displays a mild anti-inflammatory effect in the 5kDa DSS model. The potential mechanisms behind this effect and the disparity between these results and those published previously will be discussed.

Abstract:
The work presented in this thesis aims to review the present knowledge on bacteria-host interactions in the GI tract, and to demonstrate the immune modulatory effects of Lactobacillus delbrueckii, a non-commensal dairy bacterium that is in constant transit in our GI tract through the ingestion of fermented food products, like milk and cheese. The main results presented in this thesis can be divided into two parts. In the first part we revisited the anti-inflammatory properties of L. delbrueckii by screening a collection of different strains for their ability to inhibit TNF-α-induced NF-kB activation in an IEC cell line. Our results demonstrated the existence of inter strain variation for immune modulation properties in the L. delbrueckii species. Two of the most effective strains completely lost their ability to suppress NF-kB after trypsin treatment, indicating that the bacterial effectors involved in the NF-kB modulation are proteinaceous in nature. We also showed that L. delbrueckii inhibits NF-kB activation by reducing the phosphorylation of IkB, which would affect translocation of NF-kB to the nucleus. Based on our in vitro results, we selected three strains for tests in a DSS model of experimental colitis. One of the strains tested, L. delbrueckii subsp.Lactis CNRZ327 (Lb CNRZ327) consistently improved the DSS-induced damage, thus confirming its anti-inflammatory properties in vivo. The second part of my thesis was dedicated to the study of the mechanisms involved in the anti-inflammatory effects of L. delbrueckii in the DSS-model of colitis. Lb CNRZ327 showed a tendency to increases s-IgA levels, modulates the production of TGF-β in colonic tissue, and of IL-6 and IL-10 in the spleen, expands the frequency of CD4+Foxp3+ regulatory T cells in the spleen and CLN during colitis and modulates the frequencies of TLR2 and TLR4 expressing dendritic cells in the cecal lymph nodes. TLR2 appears to be involved in Lb CNRZ327 recognition and affect IL-12 production in BMDM. This is the first demonstration of systemic immune modulation effects exerted by a dairy Lactobacillus. The results of this study show that dairy lactobacilli that often are part of a regular diet can modulate innate immune responses and may thus affect health more than generally thought

Abstract:
When it comes to cloud services, security has many a times been the hot topic. This has been especially relevant within the payment card industry and the secure handling of payment card data. The Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council (the council) was formed in order to ensure a global enhancement of payment card data. The council has issued requirements that all companies that handle payment card data are obliged to follow. However, the council has become much more strict as of recently, creating an urgency to become compliant. Thus, cloud service providers (CSP) have constructed standardized, PCI DSS compliant products so as to relief such customers. Since this emerging market is somewhat new, this thesis has researched how CSPs should relate to products within that market and the potential customer base. The case study for this research was conducted at Tieto, an IT service company, and its standardized, PCI DSS compliant product TiCC. The study collected empirical data in the form of qualitative interviews as well as quantitative telephone interviews with companies within the payment card industry. The study came to the conclusion that there is a demand that is not being met within the payment card industry related to products that aid organizations to become PCI DSS compliant. Standardized products have been constructed so as to fit financial customers while overlooking the demand of another large customer base, retail. Additionally, the products are being tweaked and features are being added, thus providing customization. CSPs are striving for both standardization as well as customization, something that has been considered counterproductive. The existing demand is thus not met with the current supply in the market, which has both multiple competitors and heterogeneity in market demand. The above mentioned thus leaves room for market seizure, to create own rules and thus making all competitors irrelevant. A potential way of doing that is through mass customization by standardizing higher levels of cloud computing.

Abstract:
There is a body of evidence indicating that the implementation of current Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry business models and practices have caused negative impacts on global energy supply, ecosystems, and local or regional economies. In order to eliminate such negative impacts, AEC practitioners are seeking new business models in which the Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology can be considered an important technology driver. Despite the fact that the majority of AEC practitioners have used BIM tools for construction-level modeling purposes, some early adopters of BIM technology began to use BIM tools to better inform their design decisions. Corresponding to the increasing demand for decision support functionality, a number of studies showed that a part of BIM technology will be developed toward decision support and artificial intelligence domains. The use of computer-based systems to support decision making processes can usually be found in the business management field. In this field, decision support and business intelligence systems are widely used for improving the quality of managerial decisions. Because of its theories and principles, Decision Support Systems (DSS) can be considered as one of the potential information technologies that can be applied to enhance the quality of design decisions. The DSS also has the potential to be constructed as a system platform for implementing building information contained in BIM models associated with other databases, analytical models, and expert knowledge used by AEC practitioners. This study explores an opportunity to extend the capability of BIM technology toward the decision support and artificial intelligence domains by applying the theories and principles of DSS. This research comprises the development of a prototype BIM interoperable web-based DSS for vegetated roofing system selection. The prototype development can be considered a part of an ongoing research agenda focusing on the development of the integrated web-based DSS for holistic building design conducted within the College of Architecture and Urban Studies (CAUS), Virginia Tech. Through a post-use interview study, the developed prototype is used as a tool for evaluating the possibility for the DSS development and the usefulness of DSS in improving the quality of vegetated roofing system design decisions. The understanding gained from the post-use study is used to create a guideline for developing a fully functional DSS for holistic building design that will be developed in the future.

Abstract:
Changes in seabed soil strength due to loading events during the life of a structure, affect the response of the structure to any future event. This change in soil strength due to loading events, in particular cyclic loads, was of great concern in the field of offshore geotechnics during the last decades. Allowing for these changes can have a beneficial outcome on the design. Studying the changes occurring in the soil can be mainly done using large scale centrifuge tests or Laboratory element testing, where the latter proved to be able to successfully illustrate soil strength changes during periods of cyclic loads and reconsolidation. A new approach of life design known as “the whole life design” has been introduced lately to the industry “. Whole life design embraces the time-varying evolution of actions and resistances to create a continuous assessment of conditions of a structure. This dissertation studies the possibility of one of the most famous element tests which is the “Direct simple shear testing” to capture the changing in strength under cyclic (i.e., episodic in this context) loads and the settlement of subsea layers for the whole life geotechnical design. The outcome of the DSS testing in addition to outcomes from other previous methods (eg T-bar penetrations and Triaxial testing) can form the basis for a new framework to be adopted in the future for demonstrating a whole life design for subsea structures. In general, the project introduces the concept of whole-life geotechnical design through practical examples and shed lights on Direct simple shear testing ability to simulate specific cyclic loading scenarios. The topic closes with a discussion of next steps to enable whole-life geotechnical design to be more readily adopted in routine practice where appropriate.

In this work a methodology for determination of inorganic impurities (Ag, As, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb e Sb) by direct solid sampling with graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (DSS-GF AAS) in iron glycinate chelate samples was developed. The thermal behavior of the analytes in solid samples and reference aqueous solutions was studied using pyrolysis and atomization curves. For Cr, Mn, Ni and Sb determination, 20 μL of water were added over the sample in the platform, and for Ag and Pb determination, 20 μL of a solution containing 4 μg of Pd as chemical modifier was used. The mass used in the Cr determination varied from 0,1 to 0,7 mg, for Ni masses among 0,1 and 0,9 mg were used, for As and Sb from 0,2 to 0,9 mg, for Ag masses among 0,1 and 1,9 mg were used, for Mn from 0,1 to 0,4 mg and for the quantification of Pb the used mass varied among 0,1 and 2,5 mg. The analytes characteristic mass average value in the solid sample was consistent with the value obtained in the aqueous reference solutions. Thus, aqueous reference solutions calibration was possible. The analytes investigated in this work, except for silver in samples FAQ1 and FAQ2, showed good homogeneity in the samples. The results obtained by the proposed method were compared with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and neutron activation analysis (NAA). No statistical difference was observed in As, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb and Sb concentrations determined by different techniques. For Ag, the comparative techniques showed a higher detection limit (LD) than the Ag concentration found in the sample by DSS-GF AAS. To address this, analyte addition through reference solutions in the samples before introduction in the atomizer was used. The recovery for silver using standard solutions was greater than 97%. The Ag, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb and Sb LDs obtained by DSS-GF AAS were 0,002; 0,07; 0,03; 0,01; 0,002; 0,008 and 0,08 μg g-1, respectively. With exception of As and Sb, the other elements presented lower LDs than those obtained by ICP-MS, ICP OES and NAA techniques.

Abstract:

The explosive growth of the World Wide Web creates new opportunities for the development and deployment of Decision Support Systems. No longer restricted by machine-specific limitations, Web-based Decision Support Systems (DSS) provide global access to widely diversified and geographically dispersed users through sharing of data, models, algorithms, and modeling environments. This thesis examines the design and development processes involved in the creation of a Web-based DSS. The Recycling Decision Support System utilizes a rapid prototype and refinement process to create a Web-based system focusing on supporting ordinary people and industrial users in making good decisions for recycling and disposal of household and industrial waste. Through abstraction of details from the specific Web-based DSS design, a generalized framework for supporting decision-making via the WWW is built which supports functionality in education, queries, and analysis of complex problems. An important aspect of this research is the development of a new architecture which conforms to the complexities specific to Web-based Decision Support Systems. Prompted by the additional interactions required for WWW connectivity, this architecture incorporates agents for negotiating transactions between the functional components of a standard DSS

Ahmed, Karim H. H. "A decision support framework for sustainable supply chain management." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2017. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/27611.

Abstract:
Sustainable Supply Chain Management has become a topic of increased importance within the research domain. There is a greater need than ever before for companies to be able to assess and make informed decisions about their sustainability in the Supply Chains. There is a proliferation of research about its understanding and how to implement it in practice. This is mainly since sustainability has been assessed from various disciplines, organizational industries and organizational functional silos . There is a lack of comprehension, unified definition and appropriate implementation of Sustainable Supply Chain Management (SSCM), leading to failure in decision making for sustainability implementation within supply chains. The proposed research identifies the research gaps through the novel application of Systematic Literature Network Analysis (SLNA) to SSCM literature. In doing so, methods including Systematic Literature Review (SLR), Citation Network Analysis (CNA) and Citation Network Mapping of literature have been used to identify definitions, KPIs, barriers and drivers of SSCM from the literature. Furthermore, a combination of methods from Text Mining and Content Analysis has been used to identify KPIs, barriers and drivers from sustainability reports of top global manufacturing companies, to better understand the practices of organizations for SSCM. The consolidation of the findings from literature and practice led to the development of an SSCM Performance Evaluation Framework built on multiple methods. A 4-level hierarchical model has been developed by classifying the identified KPIs into Economic, Environment and Social as well as considering the key decision areas including tactical, strategic and operational. Furthermore, a rigorous data collection process was conducted among supply chain and sustainability managers from top global manufacturing firms and leading academicians in the field, assessing the identified SSCM KPIs. The collected data were analyzed through novel application of hybrid Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) methods, which includes Values Focused Thinking (VFT), Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchical Process (FAHP), Fuzzy Technique of Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (FTOPSIS) and Total Interpretive Structural Modelling (TISM), for prioritizing and modelling of interdependencies, interactions and weightages among SSCM KPIs. The results obtained were subsequently used to develop a Decision Support System (DSS) that allows managers to evaluate their sustainability by identifying problem areas and yielding guidance on the KPIS and most important areas to focus on for SSCM implementation. The application of DSS has been demonstrated in the context of a case company. From a theoretical development point of view, a Tree perspective framework contributing to the ecological Theory of Sustainability has been proposed through the identification of the most influential organizational theories, and how they interrelate with each other. Overall, the proposed research provides a holistic perspective of SSCM that incorporates the various aspects of organizations, relevant organizational theories and perspectives of academics and practitioners together. The proposed DSS may act as a guiding tool for managers and practitioners for SSCM implementation in companies.

Abstract:
The development and use of web-enabled tools for watershed modeling and decision-making have gained popularity lately with the increase in internet speed and accessibility. Most of the web-enabled tools available today address the watershed problems related to a narrow discipline like hydrology, or ecology etc. This thesis presents the work done in the development of a web-enabled integrated system, named WebL2W, which can address watershed problems in a more holistic approach.

WebL2W integrates models from hydrology, economics, and biology in a single shell. The integration is performed using GIS as a common platform for database and interface management. A user accesses the system over the web and chooses pre-selected land development patterns to create a 'what if' scenario. The hydrologic model simulates effects of the scenario on annual runoff volume, flood peaks of various return periods, and ground water recharge. The economics model evaluates the changes in land value, tax revenue, and government expenditures as a result of the new land development scenario. The biology model evaluates effects of new land uses to fish habitats in the watershed. The design of the system is based on current software engineering practices such as object oriented programming (OOP) and relational database management system (RDBMS). The implementation uses the Visual Basic programming environment and Active Server Pages.

Abstract:
A society´s health depends on the access to proper and hygiene sanitation. Half of the population still do not have access to proper sanitation in Nepal; therefore government and non-government organizations are facilitating sanitation access to all the population. Decades ago, open defecation and pit latrines toilet were the only options as sanitation system to the people. But now, various types of toilets system known as dry toilets, septic tanks, centralized sewerage system and biogas integrated toilets are available. Therefore, existing toilet system in rural areas of Nepal needs to be evaluated with respect to environment and long term sustainability. Aim of this study is to find the appropriate toilet system for rural areas of Nepal. This study also discusses how that appropriate toilet system can be promoted based on current scenarios from government level to local level. Generic Multi-Attribute Analysis (GMAA) is used as a decision support tools to evaluate available various toilet alternatives. For which a rural area from Nepal is chosen as study area. GMAA helps in evaluating all the toilet system based on social, technological, environmental and economical aspects. Interpretation between the toilet systems can be made easily with the help of GMAA results. Field questionnaire survey was also carried out in the study area to know user´s understanding of toilet alternatives. Every toilet systems have pro and cons based on different social, technological, environmental and economical aspects. It was found that pit latrines toilet systems are mostly practiced in the rural areas of Nepal. User prefers pit latrines because of its social accepted character and technologically easy in using it. Biogas integrated toilet system came as optimal toilet system though not accessible to all household. It was found that urine and faeces separating toilets are environmentally and economically beneficial. The thesis concludes that appropriate toilet system which is sustainable must be promoted while increasing toilet coverage in Nepal. Urine and faeces separating toilet is found to be appropriate and need to be incorporated in the government goal of increasing toilet coverage.

El-Ragal, Ahmed Abdel Hameed Hassan. "Building DSS using knowledge discovery in database applied to admission and registration functions." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/1971.

Abstract:
This research investigates the practical issues surrounding the development and implementation of Decision Support Systems (DSS). The research describes the traditional development approaches analyzing their drawbacks and introduces a new DSS development methodology. The proposed DSS methodology is based upon four modules; needs' analysis, data warehouse (DW), knowledge discovery in database (KDD), and a DSS module. The proposed DSS methodology is applied to and evaluated using the admission and registration functions in Egyptian Universities. The research investigates the organizational requirements that are required to underpin these functions in Egyptian Universities. These requirements have been identified following an in-depth survey of the recruitment process in the Egyptian Universities. This survey employed a multi-part admission and registration DSS questionnaire (ARDSSQ) to identify the required data sources together with the likely users and their information needs. The questionnaire was sent to senior managers within the Egyptian Universities (both private and government) with responsibility for student recruitment, in particular admission and registration. Further, access to a large database has allowed the evaluation of the practical suitability of using a data warehouse structure and knowledge management tools within the decision making framework. 1600 students' records have been analyzed to explore the KDD process, and another 2000 records have been used to build and test the data mining techniques within the KDD process. Moreover, the research has analyzed the key characteristics of data warehouses and explored the advantages and disadvantages of such data structures. This evaluation has been used to build a data warehouse for the Egyptian Universities that handle their admission and registration related archival data. The decision makers' potential benefits of the data warehouse within the student recruitment process will be explored. The design of the proposed admission and registration DSS (ARDSS) will be developed and tested using Cool: Gen (5.0) CASE tools by Computer Associates (CA), connected to a MSSQL Server (6.5), in a Windows NT (4.0) environment. Crystal Reports (4.6) by Seagate will be used as a report generation tool. CLUST AN Graphics (5.0) by CLUST AN software will also be used as a clustering package. Finally, the contribution of this research is found in the following areas: A new DSS development methodology; The development and validation of a new research questionnaire (i.e. ARDSSQ); The development of the admission and registration data warehouse; The evaluation and use of cluster analysis proximities and techniques in the KDD process to find knowledge in the students' records; And the development of the ARDSS software that encompasses the advantages of the KDD and DW and submitting these advantages to the senior admission and registration managers in the Egyptian Universities. The ARDSS software could be adjusted for usage in different countries for the same purpose, it is also scalable to handle new decision situations and can be integrated with other systems.

Tyagi, Rajesh. "A computer-based DSS for funds management in a large state university environment." Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/77782.

Full text
Abstract:
The comprehensive computerized decision support system developed in this research employs two techniques, computer modeling and goal programming, to assist top university financial officers in assessing the current status of funds sources and uses. The purpose of the DSS is to aid in reaching decisions concerning proposed projects, and to allocate funds from sources to uses on an aggregate basis according to a rational set of prescribed procedures. The computer model provides fast and easy access to the database and it permits the administrator to update the database as new information is received. Goal programming is used for modeling the allocation process since it provides a framework for the inclusion of multiple goals that may be conflicting and incommensurable. The goal programming model allocates funds from sources to uses based on a priority structure associated with the goals. The DSS, which runs interactively, performs a number of tasks that include: selection of model parameters, formulating goals and priority structure, and solving the GP model. It also provides on-line access to the database so that it may be updated as necessary. In addition, the DSS generates reports regarding funds allocation and goal achievements to allow analysis of the model results. The decision support system also provides a framework for experimentation with various goal and priority structures, thus facilitating what-if analyses. The user can also perform a sensitivity analysis by observing the effect of assigning different relative importance to a goal or set of goals.

Abstract:
Several studies have been carryout on finding optimal locations to minimize CO2 emissions from the last mile distribution perspective. In conjunction with that, there has been no study conducted in Sweden that provides a decision support system to compute the transport consequences of the modifications in the retailer’s store network. This thesis did used the following steps: requirement analysis, system design, implementation and testing to build a prototype decision support system that is to help retailers find optimal locations for a new retail store. This thesis provided a subsequent answer as to which data are needed along with the rightful user interface for said decision support system. Subsequently, this thesis does present a decision support system prototype from which some recommendations were provided as to what skills set and tools are needed for the management and maintenance of said decision support system. The primary data used during this thesis is the Dalarna municipalities, six selected retailer’s stores networks and the Dalarna Road network geo-data (Longitude and latitude). This thesis does conclude that it is possible to integrate an optimization model within the Django framework using a geo data to build a decision support system.
