Abstract:
This thesis explores the political, economic and social fortunes of London's drapers in the Late Middle Ages, and the city's developing role in both the domestic and export trades in cloth. The first section considers the early development of the drapers' guild in the context of political and economic pressures. The city-wide ramifications of collaboration among drapers intent on protecting mutual economic interests are discussed with particular reference to John of Northampton, draper, who was politically-active in late fourteenth century London. An exploration of the identity or identities of London drapers sets the guild's significance in the wider context of other networks of association based on residence, kinship, apprenticeship, property-holding and parish-based brotherhoods. The next section discusses London's emerging role as the distributive centre of an expanding trade in English cloth. The role of cloth consumers (particularly noble and gentle households) in increasing London's magnetism is considered through an analysis of the purchase accounts of the Great Wardrobe. Aspects of investment in the domestic production of cloth, and the relationship between drapers, London clothworkers and provincial clothiers, is brought to light by a study of particulars of ulnage accounts, and of debt and Chancery cases involving drapers. The final section, based on particular accounts of custom and subsidy, supplements what is known of London's expanding role in the cloth export trade with an analysis of the various mercantile interests behind these exports. In addition, the drapers' path from the export of wool and import of Flemish cloth in the early fourteenth century, to the export of cloth from the late fourteenth century, to a diversity in both imports and exports which was born of growing economic confidence by the end of the fifteenth century, is discussed alongside the growing competition faced by drapers as domestic suppliers and retailers of cloth.

Abstract:
In this project notions of presence and absence will be explored through a study of 'the fold'. I will closely examine a number of paintings that depict folded drapery or cloth and from this examination I will select examples that evoke a response in me to these fundamental states of being, My objective is to produce a body of paintings that explore the structure of the fold and its expression through light, shadow and darkness to develop a range of images that metaphorically represent these phenomena and the possibility of a relational field between the two. This examination will re-present, reinterpret, fragment and transform the selected images using the materials of oil painting and drawing to visualize my response to the changing perceptions of this phenomenon. This investigation is informed by philosophical and psychoanalytical writings that explore the phenomenology of states of presence and absence. In part, these states are suggested by other terminologies, for example, form and space or volume and void. The project draws on the work of writers who have examined and changed perceptions of this phenomenon, particularly where they attribute the structure of absence to contribute to an understanding of subjectivity, question the favouring of presence in Western thought and explore the relationship between the two.

The subject of the thesis is a series of paintings. It is based on painting concept of drapery. The history of art is accompanied by drapery almost from the beginning. I´m interested in the variety of aproaches, once the drapery supports the meaning of the painting, once it is the main object of the paintwork. My intention is to paint a series of pantings, which will follow and complement the historic aproach.

Abstract:
Scholarly attention to late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century French art has focused on the importance that Johann Joachim Winckelmann attributed to the male nude figure in his definition of ideal beauty, and the impact of his work on debates over the 'beau idéal' in French art and art criticism. In contrast, Winckelmann's extensive interest in the detail of ancient costume, the folds of drapery, and the teleological and aesthetic significance that he ascribed to them, has been underplayed. The role played by costume and drapery as components of the 'beau idéal' in French art and aesthetics has also not been fully explored. This thesis examines the way in which costume and drapery formed an important component and embodiment of ideal beauty in the work of Winckelmann and in late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century French artistic circles, providing new insights into the arguments over the meanings of Truth, Beauty and Nature in this period. The thesis proposes that ideal beauty in late eighteenth- and early nineteenth- century France was conveyed in works of art through the accurate rendering of costume and the expressive qualities of drapery in combination with the perfect form and contour of the nude body. The first part of the thesis sets up a proposition that costume and drapery formed part of the definition of ideal beauty in the work of Winckelmann. Highlighting the significance of Winckelmann's work on costume and drapery in French art theory, it demonstrates how the definition of ideal beauty in France also incorporated the accurate rendering of costume and the aesthetic impact of drapery. In demonstrating the significance of costume and drapery to both Winckelmann and French theorists it is proposed that the application of a meta-historical approach of costume and drapery to French art theory can provide new understandings and readings of the definition of ideal beauty, the hierarchy of the genres and the broader aesthetic concerns of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth- century French art. The second part of the thesis applies the proposed hermeneutic of costume and drapery to a small selection of theoretical work on the nature of ideal beauty and on a significant collection of Salon criticism. With this approach to the primary material this thesis demonstrates how French artists were able to express the 'beau idéal' within the traditional academic conventions and hierarchies, and negotiate the sense of public unease over the use of nudity in contemporary art.

Abstract:
The client for the project was Draper Europe AB. The project's goal was to produce designdocumentation to improve Draper's packaging station. The purpose of the new packingstation was that the cardboard would not be damaged during feeding as it risks damagingproducts during shipping. The criteria given by Draper were: ● The cardboard should not bend ● The construction should not be too complex for the task ● The construction must be space-efficient with the floor surface The advantages of creating a better packing station are that a better process contributes toless work being needed and makes the process less time-consuming. The station will also bemore ergonomic when the process is largely automated. The feasibility study examined previous projects done in the same subject as well as acompetitor analysis to see how other companies had solved the same problem. Thefeasibility study resulted in a decision that a modified drum would be used to prevent thecardboard from bending by making the edges land in the folds of the cardboard, this wouldplace all the load on the parts of the carton that could be bent. In the Principle Construction, four different ideas were examined. Among these wereseveral different types of feeders. Finally, a friction solution was chosen that would feed thecardboard over a modified drum using two feeders. In the Primary Design, CAD models were created that were used to perform constructionanalyzes and to create drawings. A component list was created in the Manufacturing Design. The component list contains thenumber of components needed for the design, from which standard components can beobtained, and how the design is intended to be manufactured. To ensure correct and safe useof the design, a user manual is also included in the component list. The result of the project was two feeders that fed corrugated cardboard over a modifieddrum. The modified drum consisted of a drum with three edges, the edges should end up inthe folds of the cardboard to prevent it from bending. Two feeders were used to create slackin the carton to ensure that it would enter at a good angle.

Full text
Abstract:
When flags flutter, they harvest the wind kinetic energy for producing periodic oscillations. Using flags for generating energy is then possible with flutter. Starting from this simple principle, this thesis deals with flag dynamics in the wind. In a wind tunnel, we study the forces on the flagpole of fluttering flags, focusing on the fluctuations of the flapping moment and drag. In particular, we observe strong variations of forces between different regimes of flutter characterized by a constant number of nodes. A model for flags is solved numerically with a Galerkin method and shows that during transitions between flutter regimes, the moment applied to the flagpole decreases because of the decrease of the flag curvature at the flagpole. When the flagpole is an oscillator with configurable inertia and stiffness, we report a strong coupling between the motion of the flag and its flagpole, with a frequency lock-in phenomenon. We study this coupling experimentally, and we show that a “stiffness-damping” parameter regulates the flagpole rotation. Notably, we design a coupling generating peak-to-peak rotations of 80o at wind speed of the order of 10 m/s

Jackson, Jenee James. "Sociosexual Development: Infusing the Belsky, Steinberg, and Draper Model with Sexual Selection." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/196156.

Full text
Abstract:
Life history theory attempts to explain between- and within-species variation in maturational and reproductive patterns, whereas sexual selection attempts to explain between- and within-sex differences in intersexual mate choice and intrasexual competition for members of the opposite sex. These two expansive evolutionary theories have been used by developmental scientists and social/personality psychologists to explain the variation observed in human reproduction, including the timing of reproductive events and individual differences in orientation toward mating and parenting. In Part I of the following paper, I review research related to life history theory and sexual selection in humans. I then show how integrating the principles of sexual selection with life history models of human reproductive strategies can address existing limitations. In Part II, I empirically examine many of the unique propositions that emerge from theoretical integration using a longitudinal dataset on adolescent development. Under investigation is an expanded model of sociosexual development that incorporates key principles from Belsky, Steinberg, and Draper's (BSD) psychosocial theory and sexual selection theory. I specifically examine the role of early rearing conditions within the home, as specified by BSD, and self-perceived mate value, as highlighted by a sexual selection perspective, on timing of sexual debut and sexual risk taking. The current study combines variable-centered and person-centered methods to assess specialized developmental trajectories. In total, the study provides novel support for BSD theory, while also highlighting needed revisions to account for the role of self-perceived mate value on adolescent sexual behavior.

Abstract:
Through a case study of the Drapers’ Company, this thesis examines the role London’s livery companies played in the built environment of the early modern City. Broadly, it is concerned with tracing institutional topographies of the urban environment and examining the city’s development in relation to these systems of governance. Specifically, it investigates the Drapers as administrators, landlords and landowners in a critical period of livery company history. Much of the extant literature on the London guilds sidelines their significant role in the spatial processes of the post-Reformation city and fails to engage with their extensive property records. However, my research situates the companies as increasingly active agents in the sixteenth and early seventeenth century built environment. Pushing against the ‘Elizabethan silence’ of this period as perceived by architectural historians, I demonstrate that the accelerated acquisition of buildings, anxiety about their condition and canny negotiations with tenants for rebuildings reveal a Company proactively seeking to maintain corporate honour and profit through their valuable urban estate. At the same time, it explores how this transition, and the erosion of their original base of authority in the trade of drapery, was expressed or suppressed in corporate spaces such as the Company Hall. The thesis therefore contributes to debates surrounding the survival of London’s guilds in the face of substantive internal change by writing the livery companies back into the story of city space. Notably, the starting point for the research was an unusual book of accounts relating to thirty-six dinners held in the sixteenth century Hall. The ‘Dinner Book’ served as an unconventional entry point into an exploration of over 300 diverse documents in the Drapers’ Archive. Taking such a holistic approach to the Archive, the study is more widely about what can be achieved in utilising the records of London's livery companies as a source for urban architectural histories as it is about the guilds' role as co-producers of city space. In giving voice to the architecture of the early modern city and its inhabitants, it challenges architectural historians in particular to re-assess their view of appropriate methodologies and legitimate evidence in relation to the urban environment.

Bricis, Anne. "Three dimensional simulation of cloth drape." Thesis, Loughborough University, 1995. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/6932.

Full text
Abstract:
Research has been carried out in the study of cloth modelling over many decades. The more recent arrival of computers however has meant that the necessary complex calculations can be performed quicker and that visual display of the results is more realistic than for the earlier models. Today's textile and garment designers are happy to use the latest two dimensional design and display technology to create designs and experiment with patterns and colours. The computer is seen as an additional tool that performs some of the more tedious jobs such as re-drawing, re-colouring and pattern sizing. Designers have the ability and experience to visualise their ideas without the need for photo reality. However the real garment must be created when promoting these ideas to potential customers. Three dimensional computer visualisation of a garment can remove the need to create the garment until after the customer has placed an order. As well as reducing costs in the fashion industry, realistic three dimensional cloth animation has benefits for the computer games and film industries. This thesis describes the development of a realistic cloth drape model. The system uses the Finite Element Method for the draping equations and graphics routines to enhance the visual display. During the research the problem of collision detection and response involving dynamic models has been tackled and a unique collision detection method has been developed. This method has proved very accurate in the simulation of cloth drape over a body model and is also described in the thesis. Three dimensional design and display are seen as the next logical steps to current two dimensional practices in the textiles industry. This thesis outlines current and previous cloth modelling studies carried out by other research groups. It goes on to provide a full description of the drape method that has been developed during this research period.

Tingey, Brady E. "Detection of a Landslide Glide Plane Using Seismic Reflection Methods: Investigation at Little Valley Landslide in Draper, Utah." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2006. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/1290.

Full text
Abstract:
An integration of geological and geophysical techniques has been used to characterize the internal structure of the Little Valley Landslide in Draper, Utah, USA. The Little Valley Landslide is a pre-historic landslide as old as 13ka B.P. It is found to consist of chaotic and disturbed weathered volcanic units derived from Tertiary age volcanics that comprise a great portion of the Wasatch Range. Geotechnical investigations that were integrated with the geophysical results included excavation of trenches and drilling of boreholes. Geophysical methods, in particular high-resolution seismic data, were used to provide a framework for interpreting the geotechnical observations. High-resolution seismic reflection data, seldom used in landslide investigations, were acquired and processed in order to image the basal or glide surface of the landslide and the structure underlying the landslide. The integration of the geotechnical and geophysical investigations provided a better understanding of the geometry of a portion of the Little Valley Landslide. Trenching and drilling identified landslide material in the subsurface. The high-resolution seismic reflection data imaged the glide surface with the onset of coherent reflectivity. A decollement or glide surface underlies the landslide indicating a large mass movement. The glide surface is observed on the seismic reflection profiles to be deepest in the center portion of the landslide. It is observed in the seismic reflection images to shallow up slope and creating a trough-like shape feature. A contour map modeling the middle of the Little Valley Landslide is derived from the seismic data. This study shows that seismic reflection techniques can be successfully used in complex alpine landslide regions. They are also efficient and cost-effective tools when compared to trenching and drilling investigations. The seismic data can (1) provide a framework to link geological data and (2) take the place of an extensive trenching and drilling program.

Abstract:
The importance of the drape properties of fabrics on final garment appearance and fit has been long understood and a great deal of research has been carried out in this area. More recently, nonwoven fabrics have begun to create interest among the apparel and fashion design community. In this study, the conventional method of measuring fabric drape was compared with garment drape measurement using an alternative drape measurement system based on an image analysis technique. Garment drape was investigated using dresses suspended on a mannequin. A garment chosen was a shift dress because of its relatively uncomplicated style and shape. Hydroentangled nonwovens were selected as they show good performance and similarity to conventional fabrics in terms of physical and mechanical properties. A graphical user interface was developed to carry out the image analysis and to calculate drape values identifying and determining 23 drape parameters. A range of fabrics including conventional (knitted, woven) and nonwoven fabrics were compared in terms of FAST properties, drape coefficient and drape values. Some nonwoven fabrics were found to give similar performance to some conventional fabrics and better than others. Subjective assessment of the fabric range was carried out in terms of drape amount and preference. Low agreement was found between individuals with regard to preferred drape amount and high agreement with respect to actual drape amount. Nonwovens were found to be better preferred over some conventional fabrics. Most of the drape values of fabric and garment were found to have poor correlations.

The MIT/Draper Technology Development Partnership Project is a two year initiative between MIT's Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics and Draper Laboratory (the funding customer) to develop an innovative, first-of-a-kind system. Through in-depth market research. concept generation. and reviews with Draper. the Wide Area Surveillance Projectile (WASP) was chosen as the lead technology demonstration project. The WASP is a gun-launched projectile in the 5"/54 NAVY to 155 mm ARMY class of munitions that transforms into a powered flight vehicle after traveling a ballistic trajectory. Once transformed, the WASP performs visual imaging reconnaissance and relays field data to the user via a Satcom or UAV signal link. This thesis covers much of the work conducted in the first year of the program. and focuses on Ballistics and aerodeceleration. Structures, and Systems Interface Design of the WASP. Although the two year timeline for the program precludes building the complete system, a series of "long-poles" are being used to demonstrate the concept functionality and feasibility for possible prototype development. These long-poles include the development of high-g composite structures, deployable flight surfaces. and a two-stroke propulsion system. as well as a virtual ground station with sensors/communications subsystems. and finally a drop-test flyer that will perform the vehicles intended mission scenario.

Abstract:
After the fall of the Second Empire, protestants in Southern France are anxious to help their country recover from the wounds inflicted by the defeat. They think it their duty to evangelize their fellow-countrymen while allowing themselves to be « awakened » in order to answer the divine design. During the period from 1870 to 1914, they intend to « unfurl the flag of the Gospel » in their own country. A minority group, even in the South where the strongest protestant minorities are to be found, they are the divided members of the « national » reformed Church or, alternatively, belong to others and smaller churches. These latter take part in different ways in these projects to which other organizations — the evangelization societies — are fully dedicated, with the help of youth organizations and religious book societies. French protestantism is not strong enough to rely on its own resources. Foreign countries, anglo-saxon protestantism particular, offer examples of evangelists, establish missionary societies in France and provide French protestantism with men and subsidies. Men, means and methods are enlisted into the service of the Gospel. The campaigns conducted in the cities and rural areas of the South, in addition to a number of territorial conquests, can serve as indexes to the dynamism of protestantism in Southern France prior to the upheaval caused by the Great War

Burnford, Nicholas. "Development of Drape Simulation Software and the Optimisation of Variable-Length Textiles." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/19867.

Full text
Abstract:
The group of manufacturing methods known as Liquid Composite Moulding (LCM) is becoming the industry standard for Polymer Matrix Composite (PMC) production. These processes are versatile and cost-effective, but they are extremely dependant on the availability of textile preforms offering good quality and consistency. Good quality preforms are realised through well-controlled fibre volume fractions, fibre orientations and thicknesses as well as the absence of defects such as out-of-plane deformations and inter-fibre gaps. Preform quality is largely determined by the draping operation, which may be modeled to better inform the design of PMC components. A draping simulation software was developed in this thesis, which can simulate the draping of textiles onto model surfaces using the kinematic draping algorithm. In addition, the thesis presents a novel textile architecture where yarn spacing lengths in a textile may vary across the textile. These variable-length textiles can be custom-tailored for specific PMC applications, offering advantages over conventional constant-length textiles such as a larger surface area covered by a single piece of textile, lower values of in-plane shear, and controlled fibre orientations. The variable-length textiles can be optimised manually or using algorithms based on Monte Carlo methods which are implemented in the software. The draping simulation software was validated by comparing laboratory trials with drape simulations, and results obtained using generic demonstrators and an industrial component; several optimisation results are presented, demonstrating the advantages associated with variable-length textiles over conventional, constant-length textiles.

Creech, G. "Mesoscopic finite element modelling of non-crimp fabrics for drape and failure analyses." Thesis, Cranfield University, 2006. http://dspace.lib.cranfield.ac.uk/handle/1826/1432.

Full text
Abstract:
To date, macroscopic analysis methods have been invariably used to analyse textile composite structures for forming and mechanical performance. Techniques such as geometric ‘mapping’ for the draping of textile fabrics and classical laminate analysis combined with simplified failure criteria to determine mechanical performance have formed the basis of most of these methods. The limited accuracy of the physical laws applied is appropriate to macro- analysis methods in which the fibre-matrix composite is treated as homogeneous medium. Today, however, modern high performance computers are opening new possibilities for composites analysis in which far greater detail of the composite constituent materials may be made. This paper presents Finite Elements techniques for the draping simulation of textile composites, specifically biaxial Non Crimp Fabrics, in which the complex deformation mechanisms of the dry tows and stitching may be properly modelled at the individual tow and stitch mesoscopic level. The resulting ‘deformed’ Finite Element model is then used to provide a basis for accurate simulation of the impregnated composite structure. The modelling techniques for both draping and structural analysis are presented, together with validation results for the study of a relatively large scale hemisphere composite part.

Abstract:
The inportant corpus of gild regulations available from the archives of the north-west mediterranean regions allows a thorough technological analysis of the various stages of the woollen-cloth production:from the choice of wools to the various branches of the dye-industry, including spinning, weaving, fulling and shearing. A new methodological approach is experimented: the systematic conversion of quantitative data into metric measurements and the interpretation of the results in the light of the technical analysis of various mediaeval textile fragments. From this works, and from the quantity of oritinal details provided by the sources, a more precise vision of the european woollencloth industry arises. It raises the question of real quality standards in the major european textile centers in lediaeval ages

Abstract:
The construction of a global translation market is not just an economic fact, but also a symbolic act. In order to understand this, we have investigated the genesis and the institutionalisation of "translation" as a category worth of a legitimate public intervention. Firstly, based on archival evidence, the thesis maps the social space of problematisation of "the book" and of its modes of international circulation, by looking at how French publishers, diplomats, bureaucrats and experts get involved in this process. Secondly, based on 103 in depth semi-directive interviews, it then investigates the institutional construction of a local space of proximity, between Paris and London, between two publishing markets and between two conflicting ethos, whilst highlighting "street-level bureaucrats"work practices. Finally, the thesis explores the possibility of a European translation market as a symbolic construction

Abstract:
Routine products are used and procedures are followed in order to prevent and minimize the bacterial contamination of the surgical wound, and thus reduce the risk of postoperative wound infections. The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate the effect of different preoperative skin preparation before cardiac surgery. In study I, 10 healthy volunteers were compared in time to recolonization of the skin and bacterial growth with or without plastic adhesive drape. Bacterial samples were taken as paired samples on both side of the sternum. Plastic drape on disinfected skin seems to hasten recolonization compared with bare skin. In study II, 135 cardiac surgery patients were comparing plastic adhesive drape versus bare skin on the chest regarding intra-operative bacterial growth. Plastic adhesive drape did not reduce the bacterial recolonization or wound contamination, P. acnes colonizes males more often than females and P. acnes is not affected by disinfection with 0.5% chlorhexidine in ethanol. Study III, compared the leg harvesting site with or without microbal skin sealant in 135 CABG patients regarding intraoperative bacterial growth and postoperative wound infection. Almost no bacterial growth was found during surgery regardless of the use of microbial skin sealant and bare skin. A high incidence of postoperative wound infections (16.8%) in 2 month follow up was present and SSI was largely caused by S. aureus, i.e. other bacterial species than observed intraoperative. Study IV, a descriptive study using phenotypic and genotypic methods investigate susceptibility to chlorhexidine among S. epidermidis indicating that S. epidermidis isolates following preoperative skin disinfection are sensitive tochlorhexidine.

Abstract:
Pas de résumé en français
The present study was undertaken to investigate whether vacuolar endoproteolysis and/or protein carbonylation (measured here with a newly developed method) were functionally linked and if either of these processes or both could differentiate between ozone sensitive and tolerant wheat cultivars (cvs). Two winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cvs released in 1986 (Soissons) and 2006 (Premio) were grown in the field and exposed to ambient and semi-controlled chronic ozone concentrations, from pre-anthesis to harvest, using a new linear ozone fumigation device that generates gradients of the pollutant. Grain yield and quality were more affected by the ozone treatments in the older cv Soissons that appeared to be the most sensitive. Because stomatal conductance did not differ significantly between the two cvs, differential ozone sensitivity was rather ascribed to differences in the biochemical and molecular responses between the two cvs. Ozone detrimental effects were mainly characterized by premature induction of leaf senescence, causing the shortening of the assimilation and grain-filling periods. Even though Soissons exhibited higher constitutive levels of carbonyl content in total soluble proteins, the increases in protein carbonylation, in response to the ozone treatments, were equivalent in both cvs. Thus basal levels of protein carbonyl seems a more relevant parameters to distinguish between ozone sensitive and tolerant wheat cvs than actual change in this parameter in response to ozone treatments. However, ozone induced more carbonyl groups on Rubisco large subunit (LSU) and small subunit (SSU) in Soissons and this was associated with a more pronounced decline in LSU and SSU contents and a lower Rubisco activity. Increased protein carbonyl levels and losses in total chlorophyll contents were concurrent, suggesting a link between the extent of oxidative stress and senescence development. Moreover, ozone treatments induced a stimulation of endoproteolytic activities that resulted mostly from increases in cysteine protease activities, for both cvs. Surprisingly, total proteolytic and cysteine protease activities were more enhanced in the tolerant cv, whereas elevated proteolysis is usually associated with high sensitivity to environemental stresses, like drought. Expression analysis for three genes encoding papain-like cysteine proteases showed poor correlation with total cysteine protease activities, which suggested that post-transcriptional regulation mechanisms were prevalent over transcriptional ones. Increased endoproteolytic activities were associated with increased protein carbonylation and with a decline in total soluble protein contents. Oxidized proteins could be more susceptible to proteolysis. Therefore, we suggest that ozone-induced ROS caused protein oxidation on one hand and acted as a signal that triggered senescence processes, such as enhanced proteolysis, on the other hand

Thesis, Strasbourg, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015STRAG015.

Full text
Abstract:
Corsica is one of the most crimogenic areas in Europe, even though the residents and visiting tourists refer to it as an earthly paradise. This dissertation attempts to examine this paradox by calling on concepts of psychoanalysis in order to explore new avenues that may be able to provide insight and otherwise shed light on the phenomenon of insular violence in a debate that is already largely open and discussed by social science specialists and, of course, journalists. Based on the theory of the Signifier, developed by Jacques Lacan, we will analyse the flag, the symbol which identifies a community to the rest of the world and to which members of this community generally identify themselves. Two historical versions will be studied: that of the Saracen's head and the effigy of the lmmaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin, which succeeded it during the revolution for independence in 1735. Such a confrontation enables the supposition that if Corsica is unable to pass from mob rule to State rule, this is partly in connection with the signifiers suggested to the islanders by their genealogy which does not encourage the understanding of exogamous laws and thus the routes leading to Oedipus and castration complexes. The definition of terrorism as "psychological war" justifies the use of psychoanalysis to discover its origins by means of a thematic which it is very familiar with: the notion of limits and transgressing limits

This thesis studies generalised Hermite constants associated with the adelic general linear group. Like for the classical Voronoi theory, we define two properties, perfection and eutaxy, which characterise the local maxima of the Hermite invariant. Upper bounds and links known in the classical case are extended to the general case and provide the value of the constant in some cases. Through a theory of designs defined for the flag variety and similar to spherical or grassmanian design, we give also many examples of objects reaching locally the extremum

Abstract:
From notarial acts, and following an approach combining a material approach and a study of relationships between individuals, the survey focused on industry, workshops and companies in the Lergue and Hérault valleys, in Fifteenth century. The detour by the criticism of the sources led to a better knowledge of the notaries of Lodévois. The words of the notary were questioned, those that designate workplaces, professional activities and manufactured products, focusing the investigation on wool clothes, specially burel, white wool cloth and blanquets. The production system was examined from the materiality of the workshop and the tools, the financing of the company and the organization of the production unit, in particular the methods of recruitment and remuneration of the workforce in the textile industry. One of the specificities of the company from Lodévois is in its legal base, often linked to the family environment. In addition, its financing involves the movement of capital and labor from one sector of activity to another. Finally, it was necessary to study the circulation of products by questioning spaces, people and markets. According to a classic approach, the nature of the goods and the traffic networks used were reconstructed, starting from the local scale to reach more distant spaces reached by the wool clothes, lambs-fur and barber's grindstones of Lodévois. In a system of nested markets, the figure of the intermediary appears as one of the characteristics of medieval industry in Lodévois

The specific use of innovative O.R. textiles is an important measure for the perioperative infection prophylaxis. Surgical gowns and drapes are available as single-use and re-usable products. Their use is connected with the corresponding consumption of resources and environmental pollution. At present, the selection of cost-saving and environmental-friendly products with a high level of protection is not possible, because O.R. textiles have not been integral investigated up to now. Hence, the interdisciplinary project is dealing with the holistic evaluation of O.R. textiles according to hygienic, ecological and economic criteria during their life cycle influenced by real conditions in practice. The integrated project consists of 4 sub projects with the following scientific objectives: - developing of a method for the holistic evaluation of O.R. textiles - assessment of the barrier effect of the O.R. textiles in reference to the structure-properties-relations depending on the use cycles - assessment of the barrier effect of the O.R. textiles in reference to the quality and conformity depending on the use cycle - microbiological and physical investigations regarding to the influence of the structure of the O.R. textiles on the steam sterilisation in practice - ecological and economic assessment of reprocessing and preservation of the barrier function depending on the use cycles

Abstract:
Peritoneal adhesions are the most common complication after surgical procedures. They often cause abdominal pain and bowel obstruction. Those peritoneal reactions are very intense in newborn and infants. Since the first days of open abdominal surgery the avoidance of adhesions has been a key problem. A countless array of drugs for local or systemic use to reduce adhesions has been tested. Until now no proven standard of secondary prophylaxis against adhesions has been established. The reasons are inefficiency or unacceptable side effects. The primary avoidance of adhesions is still the main focus for surgeons. Surgical techniques which keeps the organ carefully and the banishment of talcum from surgical gloves are widely acknowledged standards in the primary prophylaxis of adhesions. The fact that cotton particles from surgical swabs also contribute to postoperative adhesions has been known for along time but until now ignored in surgical practice. This study shows that the use of alternative material like polyester instead of cotton during operation does strongly reduce the formation of adhesions in rat. A further finding of this study is that the instillation of PF 5080, a Perfluorocarbon, in the late phase of the operation in the abdominal cavity does also reduce postoperative adhesions in rat. The local and systemic mode of function remains unknown and will be the subject to further research.

Abstract:
There appears to be little doubt about the nature of the relationship between the fashion model and the young girl in contemporary Western culture. Dominant literature, emerging from medico-psychological and feminist research, situates the model as a disorderly influence, imbued with the capacity to infect and, hence, distort the healthy minds and bodies of 'suggestible' young girls. Opposing these perspectives is a smaller, more recent body of literature, emerging from post-feminist work that argues that the model-girl relationship is a delightful influence. Thus, the contemporary field of scholarship reveals an increasingly dichotomous way of thinking about fashion model influence: the model influences young girls in ways that are disorderly or delightful, never both. This thesis argues that to assume that the model-girl encounter is 'neatly' disorderly or delightful is shifty at best. It suggests that, in their rush to judge the fashion model as either pernicious or pleasurable, existing literature fails to account for the precision with which young girls know the fashion model. Using poststructuralist theory, the thesis argues that 'influence' may be more usefully thought of as a discursive effect, which may produce a range of effects for better and worse. Following Foucault (1972), fashion model influence is interrogated as a regime of truth about the model-girl encounter, constituted discursively under specific social, cultural and historical conditions. In so doing, the thesis makes different sense of fashion model influence, and questions influence as an independently-existing 'force' that bears down on vulnerable young girls. Drawing on a poststructural conceptual architecture, this thesis re-conceptualises the model-girl encounter as a pedagogical relationship focused on the (ideal) female body. It suggests that the fashion model, as an authoritative embodied pedagogue, transmits knowledge about 'ideal' feminine bodily conduct to the young girl, as attentive gazing apprentice. Fashion model influence is re-interrogated as the product of certain forms of disciplinary training (Foucault, 1977a), with young girls learning a discursive knowledge about how to discipline the body in ways that are properly feminine. Such a perspective departs from the notion that fashion model influence is necessarily disorderly or delightful, and makes possible a re-reading of influence in terms of learning outcomes. A problematic arises conceptualising the fashion model in this way. To consider the model as a 'good' teacher breaches a number of discursive rules for best pedagogical practice in postmodern times: She is not a pedagogue of the mind; she is not student-centred, facilitative, asexual, interpersonally engaged, relational, or authentic. To create a space for thinking differently about the model as a teacher, then, the thesis looks to ancient historical times and places in which female-to-female and body-to-body pedagogies were practised and understood. The first phase of the research project embedded in this thesis defamiliarises pedagogical work using historical texts from ancient Greece. It examines in particular the erotically embodied pedagogical relationships conducted between older, authoritative elite prostitutes known as hetairae, and their younger female apprentices. The discursive rules governing these pedagogical relationships are examined with a view to diagnosing the model-girl encounter in terms of these rules. These rules are then used to interrogate ethnographic data generated through observation of the model-girl encounter in situ in a modelling course, and through focus group interviews with groups of young girls. Working through notions of corporeal embodiment, self as art, desire, discipline, stillness, spectacle, the gaze and the conduct of conduct, the study interrogates the model-girl encounter as a contemporary pedagogical encounter. To avoid reaffirming more traditional binaries, the reading of data is ironic, working within and between binaries such as disorder/delight. Three ironic categories of femininity are produced out of the analysis: unnaturally natural, stompy grace and beautifully grotesque. These categories 'speak' the fragmentation, fissure, contradiction, inconsistency and absurdity that permeate the talk of young girls and model-girl pedagogy in the modelling classroom. Thus, the thesis offers up an analysis of the model-girl encounter that refuses the neatness and uni-dimensionality that characterises existing literature.
