Oktober 2017 veranstaltete die GPT im historischen Hörsaal des Anatomischen Institutes der Universität Bonn ein Ehrensymposium für ihren langjährigen Präsidenten (1992 bis 2008) und späteren Ehrenpräsidenten Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Fritz H. Kemper, der am 28. März 2017 im Alter von 90 Jahren verstorben war. Freunde und Weggefährten ließen in ihren Beiträgen sein Wirken und seine Verdienste lebendig werden.

Abstract The digital divide continues to persist in Indian Country, and a significant percentage of Native Americans still await affordable and reliable telecommunications services. In a potentially influential move based on existing conceptions of competition and tribal sovereignty, the Federal Communications Commission recently recognized the Standing Rock Sioux tribe as an Eligible Telecommunications Carrier for its reservation lands. Via the disciplines of law and economics, Dr. Kemper analyzes these developments to find whether they will be efficient and equitable for all the parties involved.

Abstract:

Dr Ir Johan Vanpaemel beschrijft in een artikel, getiteld 'De Industrialisatie van de Kempen' het ontstaan van metallurgische en chemische industrie tussen Lommel en Balen. De auteur laat zien, hoe in de tweede helft van de 19e eeuw talrijke sterk vervuilende industrieën werden overgebracht naar de dunbevolkte delen van de Noorderkempen. Ook daar rezen echter grote bezwaren tegen de enorme pollutie, waardoor de regen niet als water maar als zwavelzuur uit de hemel kwam vallen! Door ingrijpen van de nationale overheid waren de bedrijven gedwongen nieuwe technische procedé's te gaan toepassen, waardoor zij enorme hoeveelheden zwavelzuur overhielden. Dit product bleek evenwel uitermate geschikt als grondstof voor de vervaardiging van kunstmeststoffen. Ten gevolge van de grote agrarische crisis ontstond sedert 1880 een grote vraag juist naar deze producten. Dientengevolge ontwikkelden zich naast de zinkfabrieken in de Kempen chemische bedrijven die de derivaten van de zinkproductie verwerkten.

Abstract:

To state that the specialty of pediatrics has undergone changes in the past 25 years would be a monumental understatement. New therapies and new diseases, as well as new societal ways of looking at children's needs, have stressed both training programs and practice. In the early 1960s, C. Henry Kempe shocked the pediatric world by defining the problem of child abuse. In the intervening time, leaders in the field of pediatrics have stressed the need to add more experience in recognizing and managing psychosocial problems of children to our training programs. In 1975, Dr Robert V. Haggerty and his colleagues formulated the concept of "the new morbidity" referring to the multiple psychosocial problems confronting children in our society.

Abstract:

The transformation from traditional iron- and steelmaking technologies to green H2-based new technologies will require an improvement in the quality and purity of iron ore burden materials. Iron ore pellets are essential inputs for producing direct reduced iron (DRI), but the conventional binders, used in iron ore pelletizing, introduce gangue oxides to the DRI and consequently increase the slag generation and energy consumption in the steelmaking unit. Partial and/or full replacement of the traditional binders with novel organic binders would significantly contribute to improving the process efficiency, particularly in the next-generation H2-based direct reduction technology. This study illustrates the feasibility of pelletizing magnetite iron ore concentrate using four organic binders: KemPel, Alcotac CS, Alcotac FE16, and CMC, in comparison to bentonite as a reference. The study explores the influence of binder type, binder dosage, and moisture content on the characteristics and properties of the pellets. The efficiency of binders was characterized by the moisture content, drop number test, cold compression strength, and H2 reduction of pellets. For dry pellets, CMS was superior among other binders including bentonite in developing dry strength. After firing, the pellets produced by the partial replacement of bentonite with 0.1 wt.% KemPel demonstrate a performance nearly identical to the reference pellets. While the complete replacement of bentonite with organic binder shows a lower performance of fired pellets compared to the reference, it may still be suitable for use in DR shaft furnaces. The cold-bonded pellets demonstrate a superior reduction rate compared to fired pellets.

This study on leadership examines the purposes of the Leadership by Example Campaign during Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s tenure as Prime Minister of Malaysia. Leadership studies are interested in people from all walks of life because the struggles of the brave and wise leaders have become the source of legends and myths.Therefore, the issue of leadership is an important agenda for both the private and public sectors ineither developed countries or developing countries. The issue becomes more acute due to a constantly changing environment.In fact, every change that happens in the environment becomes a constant challenge for leaders in all sectors.In the context of the political leadership in Malaysia, the position and interests of UMNO and Barisan Nasional led by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was quite evident because it was the leadership that had led the country for a long period of time to the extent that it was considered as a bridge connecting two generations of UMNO. However, people who were born in the 1980s only recognised one Prime Minister and four Deputy Prime Ministers until the day of his retirement. Thus, the study found that the Leadership by Example Campaign introduced by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad that aimed for instilling and cultivating effective leadership was emulated, appreciated and practised by all levels of society.In general, this study used a qualitative approach. While, this data was gathered through document review and analysis of the content to obtain the results. The Leadership by Example Campaign was a noble effort from Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to foster a spirit of discipline and establish the identity of every Malaysian to be able to stand tall together with other nations.

Abstract The Gary B. Melton Visiting Professorship was created to honor and celebrate the legacy of Dr. Melton and to encourage scholars and advocates to continue to build on his impressive body of interdisciplinary work on children’s rights, global approach to child health and well-being, and social frameworks of family and community. A collaboration of the Haruv Institute and the Kempe Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect at the University of Colorado, the Melton Lecture was designed to be interdisciplinary, with the inaugural professorship and lecture given by a pediatrician and an anthropologist. This set of award recipients encompassed Gary Melton’s concerns from the individual and family to the larger context of culture and community. In this inaugural Melton Lecture, we take as our starting point Gary Melton’s quote, “Child abuse is wrong….” On this, we all can agree. Agreement lessens in response to the second part of the quote, “…the nation’s lack of an effective response to it is also wrong….” Indeed, the field continues to grapple with long-standing issues on how to ensure an effective response to child abuse. We use this lecture to consider how to move toward an effective response without simply rearranging the deck chairs on a sinking ship.
