Abstract:
Studies have shown that street network centrality measures are capable of explaining a significant proportion of pedestrian activity. These studies typically employ street centreline networks that differ significantly from the networks that pedestrians use to traverse the built environment. Presently, centrality approaches are rarely applied to dedicated pedestrian network (DPNs). This creates uncertainty regarding their ability to explain pedestrian activity when derived from DPNs. This study addresses that gap by investigating the extent to which centrality metrics derived from DPNs can explain observed pedestrian densities, both alone and when controlling for other built environment variables in metro station environments in Asia. In total, four DPNs were created centred on metro stations in Bangkok, Manila, Osaka, and Taipei chosen to represent different urban typologies. Multivariate results show that centrality metrics alone explain a mere 6–24% of observed pedestrian densities when calculated on DPNs. When all factors are considered, the contribution of centrality remained consistent in most study sites but is somewhat reduced with land-use variables and proximity to rail transit revealed as the strongest predictors of pedestrian density. Pedestrian design factors were also frequently associated with pedestrian density. Finally, stronger associations between centrality and pedestrian densities were observed in the denser, more complex pedestrian environments. These findings provide insight into the performance of centrality measures applied to DPNs expanding pedestrian network research in this area.

Abstract:
Diaphragmatic force, determined by stimulating the phrenic nerve while simultaneously measuring the pressures in a closed respiratory system, was assessed in five anesthetized dogs over a 5-h period to evaluate the inherent variability of this technique. Transdiaphragmatic pressure (Pdi) was measured at functional residual capacity during stimulation (120 Hz, 0.2-ms duration) of one phrenic nerve by either direct phrenic nerve stimulation (DPNS) or transvenous phrenic nerve stimulation (TPNS). An analysis of variance showed no significant (P greater than 0.50) change during the 5-h period. There was a significant correlation (r = 0.94, P less than 0.001) between Pdi obtained by TPNS and that obtained by DPNS. It is concluded that either DPNS or TPNS can be used to evaluate diaphragmatic strength over a 5-h period and that TPNS can be used in lieu of DPNS.

Abstract The paper addresses the issue of meaning-making in a highly prolific and sprawling segment of English vocabulary – derivatives from precedent names (DPNs). The combination of cognitive linguistics methods applied to analyze the semantics of DPNs (Robin Hood cluster, Cinderella-based blends and Dorian Gray effect) permitted to account for their bias towards polysemy, which seems to be basically grounded in the process of metonymic zoom-in on the selected content in the event frame that describes the precedent name, oftentimes leading to domain extension and indeterminacy.

Abstract:
In a Drug Prescription Network (DPN), each drug is represented as a node and two drugs co-prescribed to the same patient are represented as an edge linking the nodes. The use of DPNs is a novel approach that has been proposed as a means to study the complexity of drug prescription. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the analytical power of the DPN-based approach when it is applied to the analysis of administrative data. Drug prescription data that were collected at a local health unit (ASL TO4, Regione Piemonte, Italy), over a 12-month period (July 2018–June 2019), were used to create several DPNs that correspond to the five levels of the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical classification system. A total of 5,431,335 drugs prescribed to 361,574 patients (age 0–100 years; 54.7% females) were analysed. As indicated by our results, the DPNs were dense networks, with giant components that contain all nodes. The disassortative mixing of node degrees was observed, which implies that non-random connectivity exists in the networks. Network-based methods have proven to be a flexible and efficient approach to the analysis of administrative data on drug prescription.

Abstract:
A common complaint with day-neutral strawberries is that they perform poorly in mid-summer heat. Since most modern day-neutral cultivars are derived from the same Fragaria virginiana ssp. glauca clone from Utah, we felt it prudent to search for alternate sources of day-neutrality that were more heat-tolerant. We compared the sexual and vegetative performance of nine F. virginiana clones from a wide range of environments including the Utah site, and four F. × ananassa day-neutral types (`Aromas', `Fort Laramie', `Ogallala', and `Tribute') under constant temperatures of 18, 22, 26, and 30 °C and 12-h days. `Aromas' and `Tribute' carry the Utah source of day-neutrality, while `Fort Laramie' and `Ogallala' are old cultivars that have a different, complex background. After a 4-week period of acclimation, we counted the number of crowns, inflorescences, flowers, stolons, and daughter plants that emerged over a 10-week period, and measured the dry weights of component parts. ANOVA tables revealed that temperature regime (T), genotypes (G), and T*G were significant for flower number (FLN) and total dry matter accumulation, while species and T*G were significant for daughter plant number (DPN). Mean FLNs across the four temperatures were 6.8, 3.7, 3.3, and 1.2, while mean DPNs were 0.7, 0.9, 0.7, and 1.8. F. virginiana clones averaged 3.8 FLNs and 1.8 DPNs, while the F. × ananassa clones averaged 4.1 FLNs and 0.2 DPNs. There was generally more variability among the F. virginiana clones than the F. × ananassa clones, but the F. × ananassa cultivars, `Fort Laramie' and `Ogallala', performed best at 30 °C. The Wasatch clone did not flower in any treatment, suggesting it is not day-neutral.

Abstract:
Deep penetrating nevi (DPNs) are rare melanocytic neoplasms consisting of pigmented spindled or epithelioid melanocytes with a distinctive wedge-shaped configuration showing activation of the WNT pathway, with unusual cyto-architectural features. It is unclear whether they show a distinct genomic profile associated with a diverse metastatic potential. We describe herein a cohort of 21 atypical DPNs analyzed by next-generation sequencing using the Ion AmpliSeq™ Comprehensive Cancer Panel. We found that β-catenin exon 3 was mutated in 95% and MAP kinase pathway genes in 71% of the cases. Less frequent mutations were observed in HRAS (19%) and MAP2K1 (24%). Isocitrate dehydrogenases 1 (IDH1) mutations, including R132C, V178I, and S278L, were identified in 38% of cases and co-existed with BRAF/HRAS mutations. The only case with progressive nodal disease carried alterations in the β-catenin pathway and mutations in IDH1 and NRAS (codon 61). By a comprehensive mutation analysis, we found low genetic heterogeneity and a lack of significant associations between specific gene mutations and histopathological features, despite atypical features. Whether the acquisition of an NRAS or IDH1 mutation in an atypical DPN may represent a molecular evolution implying a pathway to melanoma progression should be confirmed in a larger series.

Several survey system components were reimplemented according to an updated software architecture, and several new system components were developed. Chief among these is a web-based administration console that provides a unified access method for several frequently used functions. Individual console functions are built around an object-oriented framework that will serve as a basis for the next system design iteration.

Abstract:
Concealed questions (CQs) are DPs that function as embedded questions. Although various attempts have been made to establish which DPs can and cannot be CQs, none of these attempts has been completely successful. I argue that the constraints on CQ DPs are the same as the constraints on subjects of embedded specificational wh- questions. I show that one apparent exception, the requirement that a specificational subject be topical, is a matter of felicity rather than grammaticality, but the existence of nontopical CQs does offer insight into the structural difference between CQs and embedded questions. I conclude by proposing that a CQ is a small clause whose predicative DP has risen into the matrix clause to produce a specificational structure.

Dissertação apresentada na Faculdade de Ciências e Engenharia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa para obtenção do grau de Mestre em Engenharia Electrotécnica e de Computadores
This thesis approaches the use of the DPWS technology to implement web-services on small devices, addresses its limitations, and explains an architecture to solve it. An approach to an autonomous device’s simple architecture was realized, using DPWS, and was called Simple DPWS. The objective was to implement/simplify some features in a device in a way that the device can work on its own. The designed architecture is based on that each component has its framework of modules, having always at least the skeleton modules communication and Event Router-Scheduler. The communication module controls all the communication between the devices and the ERS is the responsible for the other modules’ real-time communication. The DPWS toolkit offers no capability of interacting with run-time-appearing services. Thus there was a necessity to do enhancements over the DPWS toolkit to have a dynamic stub and skeleton. This service was called the dynamic service. An experience was done connecting a DPWS toolkit sample service with the corresponding hand-created dynamic service. It was used the lighting service that consists on turning a lamp ON or OFF and getting its status. A GUI was done for the application to be more user-friendly. The results were satisfactory, as the connection worked.

Abstract:
The hexanucleotide repeat expansion GGGGCCn (also known as G4C2n) localizes in the first intron of the C9ORF72 gene and is the most common genetic cause of ALS and FTD (C9ALS/FTD). The pathomechanisms proposed for C9ALS/FTD suggest that from sense (G4C2)n- and anti-sense (C4G2)n-containing transcripts originate two different mechanisms of toxicity: i) by the alteration of RNA processing due to binding and sequestration of RNA-binding proteins, thereby leading to impairment of RNA metabolism; and ii) by their unconventional Repeat-associated non AUG (RAN) translation into five different dipeptide-repeats (DPRs). In addition, pathological expansion of (G4C2)n reduces the C9orf72 transcription causing loss of function of the C9ORF72 protein. The toxicity of some of these DPRs has been showed in several cell lines, in iPSC-derived neurons, in Drosophila and in mouse models. An impairment of the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) due to aggregation of toxic proteins is largely demonstrated in neurodegenerative disorders and among the mechanisms of DPR-related toxicity. RAN translation of (G4C2)n-RNAs has been recently shown to require a near-cognate start codon upstream of the repeat in frame +1 and to be triggered by stress conditions in a cap-dependent or cap-independent way. However, the mechanism regulating RAN translation is still largely unknown. Importantly, no small molecules are known to selectively modulate RAN translation, even if antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) and small molecules binding the r(GGGGCC)n have been proposed as therapeutics for C9ALS/FTD. In addition, no effective pharmacological approach to reduce the pathological load of DPRs is currently available. Here, I developed a high-throughput drug-screening assay to identify small molecules and relative molecular targets that can modulate the DPR level. Among the identified hits, two hits reduced DPRs expression levels triggering the protein clearance system in vitro. Moreover, the screening identified compounds having the same target that increased DPRs expression levels indicating the targeted pathway as a crucial modulator of the translation process of the C9orf72 repeat-containing mRNAs. Conversely, I showed that pharmacological inhibition of the pathway reduced DPRs expression levels in vitro, while in vivo it rescued climbing ability and increased life span of Drosophila flies carrying G4C2X36 repeats. Moreover, genetic ablation of the target reduced DPRs expression levels by decreasing their translation efficiency in vitro and rescued the pathological phenotype in vivo. Together, the results show the identification of new pathways as new drug targets for C9ALS/FTD.

Abstract:
Abstract:
Dissertação apresentada na Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa para obtenção do grau de Mestre em Engenharia Electrotécnica e de Computadores
In present manufacturing systems, the current challenge is the development of highly reconfigurable, truly distributed solutions. The tendency is to build manufacturing systems with autonomous, intelligent and distributed components that will support reconfiguration and adaptability. The most promising paradigms for the implementation of such systems are multi-agents and service oriented architectures (SOA), mainly over the DPWS (Device Profile for Web Services) implementation which was aimed at devices. An important limitation of most current multi-agent systems is that the management system is not totally distributed. Failure in the agent responsible for the registry can overthrow the entire system. DPWS does not have this limitation, since the management system is totally distributed. However, DPWS does not support agent autonomy notions as efficiently. The possibility of creating a truly distributed multi-agent system by linking both approaches led to this thesis. A Middleware layer was developed that enables agents to benefit from DPWS functionalities in order to reach the proposed goal. This middleware layer joins agents, databases, hardware, simulators, human interface applications such as production system management, error correction and maintenance, etc. To prove this concept a 3D model of an agent controlled manufacturing system with transporters augmented with DPWS communication interfaces was developed.

Abstract:
Abstract The re-development of a giant offshore field in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) consists predominantly of four artificial islands requiring in most cases extremely long horizontal laterals to reach the reservoir targets. Earlier SPE technical papers (1,2) have introduced the development, testing, qualification, and deployment of the plugged liner technology using the dissolvable plugged nozzles (DPNs). The use of DPN plugged liner technology has resulted in CAPEX savings and enhanced production performance. The benefits of DPN technology are its simplicity along with its cost effectiveness. However, the dissolvable material has some limitations, such as pressure rating and dissolution time, which are fluid chemistry dependent. To overcome these limits, a new Pressure Actuated Isolation Nozzle Assembly (PAINA) was developed as an alternative to the plugged liner tool for applications where a higher pressure rating is required, as well as on demand opening. Furthermore, the new PAINA also functions as a flow control device during injection and production, enhancing acid jetting effects during bullhead stimulation and reducing brine losses during liner installation. Liners with PAINAs can be run to TD similar to blank pipe: fluids can be circulated through the inside of the liner without the need for a wash pipe. Once on bottom, non-aqueous drilling fluid is displaced to brine without actuating the isolation mechanism. When the well is ready for production or injection, pressure is applied and the isolation mechanism is activated to establish communication between well and reservoir. These tools were successfully run as flow control devices in water-alternating-gas (WAG) pilot wells. The planning and execution of the initial application will be discussed, along with the tool development, qualification testing, and lessons learned. The key advantage of this technology is in extending plugged liner applications to cases where other pressure-operated tools are included as part of the liner lower completion. Pressure can be applied to the well multiple times without activating the isolation mechanism as long as the applied pressure is below the actuation pressure.

Abstract:
This paper proposes a novel direct policy search (DPS) method with model selection for partially observed Markov decision processes (POMDPs). DPSs have been standard for learning POMDPs due to their computational efficiency and natural ability to maximize total rewards. An important open challenge for the best use of DPS methods is model selection, i.e., determination of the proper dimensionality of hidden states and complexity of policy functions, to mitigate overfitting in highly-flexible model representations of POMDPs. This paper bridges Bayesian inference and reward maximization and derives marginalized weighted log-likelihood~(MWL) for POMDPs which takes both advantages of Bayesian model selection and DPS. Then we propose factorized asymptotic Bayesian policy search (FABPS) to explore the model and the policy which maximizes MWL by expanding recently-developed factorized asymptotic Bayesian inference. Experimental results show that FABPS outperforms state-of-the-art model selection methods for POMDPs, with respect both to model selection and to expected total rewards.

Abstract:
One nanomanufacturing concern is the precise, controlled deposition of materials at the nanoscale, commonly referred to as nanolithography. One promising technique, dip-pen nanolithography (DPN), can deposit a multitude of organic and inorganic materials. Simple and accurate, DPN uses an atomic force microscope (AFM) cantilever to deposit inks under ambient conditions. However, from a manufacturing perspective, DPN’s main drawback is its inherent serial nature. Another more promising technique is microcontact printing (μCP), which can repeatedly cover larger areas in a parallel fashion. As interest in nanomanufacturing processes increases, the demand for user-friendly, automated nanolithography processes become a priority. This paper presents a nanolithography process that begins with a design plan and ends with a manufactured product using a unique progression from design environment to serial nanolithographic technique to parallel nanolithographic technique. The process begins with the creation of a design template using conventional CAD software. The design template is then transformed into a vector signal that serves as input to the AFM used in the DPN process. A custom AFM has been designed for nanometer scale precision in three axes using real-time, digital feedback methodologies. Using the appropriate DPN ‘ink’ coated on the AFM cantilever, the design template is automatically reproduced onto the substrate, where the appropriate features are filled in with predetermined chemical functionalities. Specifically, alkanethiol chemistry is used as a resist for wet chemical etching of a gold substrate to create raised surface features which mimic the original design template. This substrate is used as a positive mask for the creation of polymeric stamps for μCP. These stamps are then used to create replicas of the original design template in a parallel fashion and qualitatively examined for their completeness and reproducibility.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is one of the chronic microvascular complications of diabetes mellitus (DM). Chinese Tuina is a promising external treatment of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), which can promote blood circulation, increase the support of tissues, accelerate metabolism and facilitate the improvement of neurological function, thereby improving the quality of life of patients with DPN. Although increasing clinical studies reveals the efficacy of Chinese Tuina therapy and its safety on DPN patients, whether Chinese Tuina therapy is indeed improving DPN remains unclear. In this study, we intended to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of Chinese Tuina in the treatment of DPN. Patient, Participant, or population: Inclusion criteria: Patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (diagnosed clinically using any accepted diagnostic criteria).

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: The purpose of this review is to determine the efficacy and safety of acupuncture on diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) pain compared with analgesics or sham acupuncture.Randomized controlled trials are the only types of studies included in this review. Condition being studied: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is a common complication of type 1 and 2 diabetes. It is also the main cause of lower limb amputation and disability in patients with diabetes. Epidemiological evidence shows that up to 50% of patients with diabetes developed neuropathy during their long-term course of disease. The cause of DPN is not completely clear, but older age, longer diabetic duration and worse postprandial glucose control has been proved to be closely related to DPN. Distal symmetric polyneuropathy is the most typical manifestation of DPN, and about 10% to 30% of the affected patients may experience symptoms of neuropathic pain. Pain can be described as burning pain, electrical or stabbing sensations, parasthesiae, hyperasthesiae, and deep aching pain of the feet and lower limbs at night. This irreversible and unbearable pain greatly affects patients' sleep and quality of life.
