Abstract:
This thesis discusses the art of contemporary Canadian artist Douglas Coupland and his use of textual art. It will explore his combinations of text and art through four major themes that are recurrent in both his writings and visual art: abundance, advertising, technology and translation and draw conclusions on the various reasons that text has become such an important component of his body of work. Overall, the thesis seeks to show Coupland’s unique use of text to create a modern take on Pop art that is able to highlight issues in society.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This mini-study project examines the strategic position of the Douglas Wine Cellar in context with the dynamics in the wine industry. For success in the future it suggests that producers, manufactures and marketing strategies will have to focus on doing the same things differently as well as doing different things, with the emphasis on improving productivity, increasing quality focus and generating value-added products aimed at meeting market requirements. The greater focus on productivity in agriculture should include wider use of effective farming practices, more effective use of capital equipment, more effective implementation of Research & Development results, product differentiation and brand building as well as the development of distribution channels with the ability to deliver these products in a cost effective and timely manner. There is no single "Superhighway". Routes are complex and discontinuous with an ever increasing pace of change. Today we live and work in a technology rich society. Rapid advancements in all industries are occurring daily. To survive and prosper, Douglas Wine Cellar must commit to a continual processof advancement and improvement of strategies to fulfill the vision of GWKLtd. THE VISION OF GWK IS TO BE A SUSTAINABLE AGRI-BUSINESS OF EXCELLENCE

Abstract:
For more than a half century Douglas MacArthur was a servant of the United States. He is best remembered as a general and a soldier, especially for his leadership during World War II and the Korean War. MacArthur was also the Superintendent of West Point, Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army, Generalissimo ( Commander) of the Armed Forces and Military Advisor (Minister of Defense) to the President of the Commonwealth of the Philippines, and the Supreme Commander Allied Powers and the Military Governor of occupied Japan. In these positions he functioned not as a soldier, but as a senior public administrator. The dissertation will begin by establishing the military as a valid and unique field of Public Administration. Contributions of military adminstration to the discipline of Public Administration will then be examined. The dissertation will examine MacArthur's professional and academic training for his previously listed administrative posts. A determination and analysis of MacArthur's theoretical and applied approaches to Public Administration and General Management Theories will be made. The analysis of MacArthur's performance in his administrative positions will be made against a backdrop of contemporary Public Administration Theory.

Abstract:

Abstract:
A fight for customer is nowadays a typical sign of business. There is no doubt about an importance of a customer service. If a company doesn't dispose of quality in this point of view, a dissatisfied customer will use competitor's service in future. There is plenty of sellers, who don't master their roles. However, to measure the quality of service is difficult. One of methods that are used by a modern marketing, is mystery shopping. This instrument serves for an identification of imperfections in the process of service, where occurs a contact between the seller and the customer. It reveals a relief and a complete approach of staff to customers. Based on this there is a possibility to compare results with standards and norms of the company, but also with competitors, the market. Identification of the best and the worst parts is a possibility to improve the performance and the quality of service. A topic of my dissertation is usage of mystery shopping to compare the customer service in perfumeries Douglas and Sephora. The aim of the dissertation is to recommend steps concerning customer service to Douglas and Sephora based on results of mystery shopping. Partial aims are judging aspects as the importance of time of shopping, whether there is a difference between quality of customer service during week and on weekend, how much it's important if the customer is a man or a woman, or if the critical factor is customer's age. I will also try to prove that prices in common stores are noticeably higher than in e-shops.

Abstract:
The transition from old-growth to second-growth British Columbia coastal Douglas-fir has resulted in reduction of log size and increased proportion of juvenile (core or crown-formed) wood. Determination of the zone of transition from juvenile to mature wood is critical to the definition of wood quality and timber value. Thirteen unpruned, two pruned second-growth, and two unpruned plantation-grown coastal Douglas-fir trees were sampled to analyze the hypothesis that the transition in relative density from juvenile to mature wood occurs at the base of the live crown. X-ray densftometric techniques were utilized to determine yearly pith to bark relative density data of five cross-sectional discs from each tree. Segmented linear regression techniques were utilized to estimate the juvenile - mature wood transition age from the data. The average number of growth increments from the pith at which juvenile - mature wood transition occurred on sections sampled at breast height, 20 percent and 40 percent of total height was 22.18. When the hypothesis was tested on unpruned trees, before and after harvest, the juvenile - mature wood transition occurred below the base of the live crown. When the hypothesis was tested on pruned trees, the transition occurred at the base of the live crown, which represented the upper limit of pruning height. This information may provide a greater insight into juvenile - mature wood transition. It will likely assist in the determination of wood quality and economic value of forest products manufactured from second-growth coastal Douglas-fir.

Abstract:
Douglas was born in London in 1828 and migrated to New South Wales in 1851 where he represented both the Darling Downs and Camden districts in the New South Wales parliament before embarking on a lengthy parliamentary career in Queensland, one that culminated in the premiership from 1877 to 1879. He was subsequently appointed government resident for Thursday Island in 1885, a position he held until his death, nearly 20 years later, aged 76, in 1904. During this period he also served as special commissioner for the protectorate of British New Guinea, administering the territory prior to it being formally proclaimed a crown colony. Douglas’s involvement in Queensland public life was significant and encompassed the entire period from the colony’s formation in 1859 to the federation of the Australian colonies in 1901. In this respect, his career allows, through a study of his long, eventful and varied life, for this thesis to examine aspects of the development and progression of Queensland’s political system as a nascent yet robust, representative democracy, through most of the second half of the nineteenth century until the colony’s incorporation in the newly formed Commonwealth of Australia. This thesis argues that John Douglas was an uncompromising Liberal in an age of Liberalism, a principled politician in an era of pragmatic factionalism and shifting political allegiances. Perhapsbecause of this he was more popular with his electorate than with his parliamentary colleagues. Douglas’s contribution to Queensland life was in large measure shaped by his character and the formative influences on it. This included his aristocratic upbringing, his public school and university education, his abiding religious faith, a profound sense of fair play, and a desire to participate fully and selflessly in the life of the community he lived in, despite the vicissitudes of his personal life. As this thesis further demonstrates, an examination of Douglas’s life affords us an insight into an energetic, accomplished, erudite, and compassionate man. Yet while his intellectual curiosity, thirst for knowledge and wide-ranging interests marked him as a Renaissance man, he also had many failings, most noticeably that of extreme obstinacy. Therefore, this thesis will analyse Douglas’s convictions and beliefs while examining the strengths and flaws inherent in his character. It is because Douglas lived a life characterised by complexity and contradiction, leavened by a mixture of accomplishment and failure, that his life, and the times he lived in, are worthy of examination.

Full text

Abstract:
Douglas fir roundwood in New Zealand is currently not used in high decay situations because the heartwood is not sufficiently durable and the sapwood is not permeable to water-borne preservatives. The results in this study have confirmed that during water-storage of wood, bacteria selectively attack pit membranes, improving permeability, which leads to enhanced preservative uptake. To optimise conditions for bacterial growth and distribution within wood, the effects of temperature, nutrient supplements, pH and incising/kerfing were investigated during the sprinkling of short Douglas fir bolts in small tanks. For water-sprinkling to be commercially acceptable the treatment time must be as brief as possible. Bacterial access to the wood is an important limiting factor. Tangential movement of bacteria in wood was found to be more rapid than radial movement and so the effect of incising or kerfing on bacterial access was investigated. Kerfing provided an ideal pathway for tangential entry into wood. Nutrient supplements in the sprinkling solution, particularly nitrogen and phosphate together, enhanced bacterial growth and enzyme activity, reducing the time required to achieve total sapwood preservative penetration. Sprinkling had no effect on heartwood permeability. Sprinkling treatments also influenced the drying characteristics of Douglas fir. Short sprinkling times (1-4 weeks) reduced radial and tangential drying rates. Longer sprinkling times improved the rate of drying. Shrinkage measurements were made on small cubes cut from sprinkled wood. Tangential shrinkage was reduced but radial shrinkage was unaffected; this should reduce the incidence of checking in water-sprinkled wood.

Abstract:
While the word “pedagogue” may evoke a vision of an instructor who is dogmatic and set in his own ways, the word descends from Greek origins: ped “child” + agogos “leader.” A pedagogue is, by definition, literally the servant who escorts the child to and from school – the “pedagogue” accompanies the student on the journey for knowledge. True to this definition, Douglas Campbell is model pedagogue – one who gently guided his countless students throughout their musical journeys. As Professor of Music (Horn) at Michigan State University for 45 years, and Horn Instructor at Interlochen Arts Camp for 25 years, Campbell was a significant influence on many developing hornists. Following their study with him, Campbell's students eventually won orchestral and college teaching positions across the United States and throughout the world. Having influenced an extraordinary number of horn students during his tenures at Michigan State University and Interlochen Arts Camp, Douglas Campbell's life and career serve as an excellent example of contemporary horn pedagogy in the United States. This dissertation provides a detailed biography of Douglas Campbell and provides evidence of his contributions to American horn pedagogy, while documenting Campbell’s performing career with the Richards Quintet, which toured the United States, Canada, and China. Additionally, compositions written for or commissioned by Campbell (Harmonielehre: Variations for Solo Horn [1996] and Epitaph [2012]) are discussed, to illustrate Campbell's influence on solo literature for the horn.

Abstract:
Douglas-Rachford algorithm is important due to its applications on the Heron problem and on the image denoising. Mathematically, it can be considered as finding a point such that the point belongs to a zero set of the sum of two maximally monotone operators. In this thesis, previous work on Douglas-Rachford algorithm is presented and the Douglas-Rachford algorithm with a changed parameter is considered. I give it the name "α-Douglas-Rachford algorithm". The new algorithm which has the changed parameter is shown to have a convergent result and other conclusions similar to those of the classic Douglas-Rachford algorithm. At the same time, it has been shown that the application of the α-Douglas-Rachford algorithm is wider than the application of the classic one. Later on, the α-Douglas-Rachford algorithm is proved to converge to the solution of the composited monotone inclusion problems, and in a special-limit case, it has some other properties. The numerical experiments confirm that the α-Douglas-Rachford algorithm does have the properties that I proved theoretically.

Abstract:
Bacterial galls on Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menzeisii [Mirb.] Franco), collected from the southern tip of Vancouver Island, the Greater Vancouver area and the Hope region of British Columbia, were generally globose in shape with rough, irregular surfaces and measured between 0.5 and 2.0 cm in diameter. The galls were generally located on the tips of branches or twigs of 10- to 20-year old Douglas-fir trees. The bacterial gall disease appeared to affect few Douglas-fir trees in the collection areas and bacterial galls were not found on any other coniferous species. Furthermore, there have been no reports of serious damage to natural forests in British Columbia due to bacterial gall disease. Young, greenhouse-grown Douglas-fir seedlings occasionally died if the tip of the main stem was artificially inoculated. Often new growing tips would be produced affecting the growth form of the seedlings. Two types of gall-forming Erwinia spp. were isolated from Douglas-fir galls. Typical isolates, tentatively identified by fatty acid analysis as Erwinia salicis, produced galls which were rough and irregular in shape composed of multiple outgrowths marked by a single or cross-shaped fissure. The atypical isolate, tentatively identified by fatty acid analysis as Erwinia herbicola subsp. herbicola, produced galls which were smooth and generally round in shape with the surface cracking as the gall expanded. Colonies of the typical isolates grown on casein-peptone-glucose media were characteristically round, slightly domed with somewhat concentric ridging observed near the margins of the colonies. Three to 4 day old colonies of the atypical isolates grown on casein-peptone-glucose media were characteristically round and concave while older colonies produced an extracellular slime and were more irregular in shape. In Luria Broth, the typical isolates grew at temperatures of up to 32°C while the atypical isolate grew at temperatures of up 34°C. The typical isolate was resistant to a wider range of antibiotics than the atypical isolate. Polyclonal antisera were produced against glutaraldehyde-fixed whole cells of both the typical T-2789 and atypical A-0181 gall-forming Erwinia isolates. The purified antisera were isolate specific as tested by immunodiffusion and an indirect ELISA against several different phytopathogenic bacteria including Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae, Erwinia herbicola subsp. herbicola, Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Rhizobium leguminosarum and Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora. Plasmid profiles of the typical Erwinia isolates contained one band while the atypical isolate characteristically contained 4 to 5 bands which appeared to be different forms of at least one plasmid. Restriction digests of the typical isolates suggested a size of approximately 50 kb while complex digestion profiles were obtained for the atypical isolates because of the difficulty in isolating individual plasmid types. From visual estimates against Hindlll-digested lambda DNA, a size of between 10 and 20 kb was suggested for the fastest moving plasmid band of the atypical isolate. No homology was observed between the different plasmid types characteristic of the two isolates. The role of the plasmid DNA of the atypical isolate in pathogenesis was not determined because curing of the plasmid(s) was not successful using high temperature treatments plus chemical curing agents. Heat treatment experiments, in which the pathogen was selectively killed at various times after inoculation, demonstrated that the bacteria are required to be present for gall induction and continued development of the gall for both of the gall-forming Erwinia isolate types. Pathogenicity of the isolated bacteria was tested on 14 conifer species, other than Douglas-fir, including Abies, Chamaecyparis, Pinus and Thuja spp. The typical isolates were weakly pathogenic on Abies, Larix and Picea spp. The atypical isolate was weakly pathogenic on Abies, Chamaecyparis, Larix, Picea and Pinus spp. Due to the limited damage caused on the conifers tested and to their infrequent occurrence, these gall-forming pathogens do not appear to be of economic importance to the forestry industry.

Abstract:
Cell division was obtained from cultured microspores of Douglas-fir on medium supplemented with auxin, cytokinin, and sucrose, but without medium salts. Embryogenic callus was initiated from excised mature and immature zygotic embryos of Douglas-fir on media supplemented with cytokinin and auxin. Precotyledonary embryos produced most of the embryogenic calli in the cultures. Secondary embryogenic callus production, and subsequent subculturing, were required for the establishment of stable embryogenic callus lines for both mature and immature zygotic embryos. Somatic embryos at the precotyledonary stage were obtained in high frequency when Douglas-fir embryogenic callus was transferred onto hormone-free medium supplemented with 1% activated charcoal, while some cotyledonary somatic embryos were obtained from hormone-free medium supplemented with low ABA levels (0-10 uM). The level of ABA in the maturation medium significantly affected the quality of the somatic embryos produced. Cell suspensions were established from embryogenic calli and have been maintained for over one year. Protoplasts were isolated from suspension, cell colonies and calli were regenerated from protoplasts. GUS and CAT genes were successfully introduced into protoplasts of Douglas-fir via electroporation, and their transient expression was obtained 2-4 days after electroporation. The results so far indicate that the production of somatic embryos via embryogenesis in vitro is obtainable, and the application of direct gene transfer via electroporation for genetic engineering of trees in this species is promising.

Abstract:
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 30-November 02, 1989 / Town & Country Hotel & Convention Center, San Diego, California
The analysis of the AH-64 Apache helicopter telemetry antenna was performed to improve the present telemetry antenna patterns. This telemetry antenna was used by the Mesa, Arizona, branch of McDonnell Douglas helicopter division to transmit real-time data gathered during test flights to a Fixed Base Data System developed by the University of New Mexico's Physical Science Laboratory (PSL) in 1988. This analysis was necessary due to the high data dropout encountered when the helicopter was performing maneuvers on the test range, a potentially dangerous situation. Since the telemetry antenna patterns had never been studied, the PSL was awarded a contract to conduct a study of the telemetry antenna and suggest ways to improve the performance of the present telemetry system. Extensive use of software developed by Ohio State University for the analysis of antennas on aircraft was applied to finding a solution to the problems encountered with the present system. This included analysis of several different configurations of antennas and antenna placement. The result of this analysis was to present McDonnell Douglas with a recommendation of telemetry antenna and telemetry antenna placement that would satisfy the requirements of the current test system in use. This represents a three-month effort by the PSL utilizing advanced antenna analysis techniques.

Abstract:
Medium density fiberboard (MDF) production uses thermomechanically refined fiber processed under shear with high pressure steam. The industry evaluates fiber quality with visual and tactile inspection, emphasizing fiber dimensions, morphology, and bulk density. Considering wood reactivity, the hypothesis is that a variety of chemical and physical changes must occur that are not apparent in visual/tactile inspection. An industry/university cooperation, this work studies effects of refining energy (adjusted by refiner-plate gap) on fiber: size, porosity, surface area, surface and bulk chemistry, fiber crystallinity and rheology, and fiber interaction with amino resins. The intention is to reveal novel aspects of fiber quality that might impact MDF properties or process control efficiency, specific to a single industrial facility. In cooperation with a North American MDF Douglas fir plant, two refining energies were used to produce resin and additive-free fibers. Refining reduced fiber dimensions and increased bulk density, more so at the highest energy. Thermoporosimetry showed increases in sub-micron scale porosity, greatest at the highest energy. Mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) revealed porosity changes on a higher dimensional scale. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller gas adsorption and MIP showed that refining increased specific surface area, more so at the highest energy. Inverse gas chromatography showed that the lowest refining energy produced surfaces dominated by lignin and/or extractives. The highest energy produced more fiber damage, revealing higher energy active sites. A novel rheological method was devised to study fiber compaction and densification; it did not distinguish fiber types, but valuable aspects of mechano-sorption and densification were observed. Refining caused substantial polysaccharide degradation, and other degradative effects that sometimes correlated with higher refining energy. Lignin acidolysis was detected using nitrobenzene oxidation, conductometric titration of free phenols, and formaldehyde determination. Formaldehyde was generated via the C2 lignin acidolysis pathway, but C3 cleavage was the dominant lignin reaction. Observations suggested that in-line formaldehyde monitoring might be useful for process control during biomass processing. According to rheological and thermogravimetric analysis, lignin acidolysis was not accompanied by repolymerization and crosslinking. Lignin repolymerization must have been prevented by the reaction of benzyl cations with non-lignin nucleophiles. This raises consideration of additives that compete for lignin benzyl cations, perhaps to promote lignin crosslinking and/or augment the lignin network with structures that impart useful properties. Fiber/amino resin interactions were studied with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). All fiber types, refined and unrefined, caused only a slight increase in melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) resin reactivity. Generally, all fiber types decreased the enthalpy of MUF cure, suggesting fiber absorption of small reactive species. But DSC did not reveal any dependency on fiber refining energy. According to XRD, all fiber types reduced crystallinity in cured MUF, more so with refined fiber, but independent of refining energy. The crystallinity in cured urea-formaldehyde resin was studied with one fiber type (highest refining energy); it caused a crystallinity decrease that was cure temperature dependent. This suggests that resin crystallinity could vary through the thickness of an MDF panel.

Abstract:
This study traces the development of Lincoln-Douglas debate in Texas. The history of this type of debate from the Great Debate between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas to the Reagan-Mondale debates is considered. In addition, the merits of this type of oral controversy are explored. The reasons for the creation of L-D debate and its introduction into the forensic curriculum are discussed. In order to measure L-D's growing acceptance in the debate community, the results of a questionnaire of Texas Forensic Association debate coaches is evaluated. This study found that L-D debate is growing in participation in Texas schools. The distinct features of L-D enable it to be an innovative and challenging form of discourse.

Abstract:
This diploma thesis attempts to introduce Jiří Douglas Sternberg (1888 {--} 1965) in the relationship with the time where he lived as well as the social class to which he belonged. He was a descendant of a Czech aristocratic family, which had its roots at least in the mid 13th century. Members of his family always had outstanding positions in the Czech state, both in politics and culture, and at the turn of the 19th century they had a strong position at the imperial court. However, turns of historical events in the first half of the 20th century significantly changed not only the life of Sternberg family, but also lives of aristocracy as such. The first major turning point came with the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic and passing of its first laws, especially the Landed Property Reform Act. Aristocracy was this way almost excluded from social life, but it still kept its exceptional position and traditional lifestyle. Changes of attitudes were did not come until the era of national depression after the year 1938, when aristocracy expressed its loyalty and support to the republic. Nevertheless, sympathies towards aristocracy ended with the year 1948, when the aristocracy possessions were finally confiscated and aristocrats were expelled to the very edge of the society.

Abstract:
This research emerges from an observation that Douglas Adams’s Hitch Hiker Series is not merely characterised by light-hearted comedy, but is underpinned by intricate philosophical ideas, especially those of twentieth century Existentialism and the related notion of absurdity. The study also investigates the interlaced functions of Adams’s fantasy and landscapes of alterity. Paradoxically, Adams’s fantastical creatures serve to illuminate the human condition and the follies and monstrosities that lurk at the heart of humanity. Not only does Adams’s fantasy mirror the maladies of twentieth century society, thus serving a satirical function, but it is also a mechanism for constructing meaning in the shape of alternative realities. Concepts related to alterity, such as simulation (Baudrillard), the structure of ‘reality’, dreaming (Descartes) and parallel universes are investigated as building blocks of Adams’s fantastic story space. Furthermore, the ideas of Sartre, Camus and other originators of Existentialism, a philosophy which considers the futility of existence and the compulsion to construct subjective meaning, are elucidated and explored in relation to Adams’s work. Existentialist concepts such as facticity and angst, as well as the Beckettian universe and the Theatre of the Absurd, are also discussed in the light of the Hitch Hiker series. Adams’s extensive satirical comment is also emphasised in this study. Adams’s satire does not merely castigate the evils of twentieth century society such as capitalism and bureaucracy, it also unmasks universal human vices such as pomposity and grandiosity, vices that are rooted in the rejection of objective morality. Although Adams comments on the folly at the heart of society, he also presents the reader with an alternative: the subjective reconstruction of one’s inner world in an attempt to spin individual webs of meaning from the nothingness at the world’s core. This study also investigates the ambiguous concept of madness as a subjective reality born of the necessity to construct meaning, and analyses Adams’s alternative landscapes based on the suggestion that ‘much madness is divinest sense’ (Emily Dickenson, in Ferguson et al., 1996: 1015).
