Abstract:
In this paper, new variations of some well-known permutation statistics are introduced and studied. Firstly, a double-descent of a permutation π is defined as a position i where πi ≥ 2πi+1. By proofs by induction and direct proofs, recursive and explicit expressions for the number of n-permutations with k double-descents are presented. Also, an expression for the total number of double-descents in all n-permutations is presented. Secondly, a double-inversion of a permutation π is defined as a pair (πi,πj) where i<j but πi ≥ 2πj. The total number of double-inversions in all n-permutations is presented.

Abstract:
Double Fortune is a novel relating events taking place in Miami, Central America, and The Bahama Bank in October and November, 1983. The main character, Michael Hayden, is a free-lance music producer who has become jaded and impotent. A chance encounter on the Bay with Marisol, a Salvadoran heiress, and Hector, her brother, propels him into a complex plot to expatriate money through U.S. government channels. Willy, a brooding Cuban bodyguard hired to protect and instruct the Salvadorans, emerges as both nemesis and key to the duplicities of the scheme. The final showdown involves the four of them on the water above the Cay Sal Bank, a part of the Bahamas equidistant to their disparate worlds.

Abstract:
In this Thesis we investigate interval translation maps (ITMs) with, on the circle, two intervals, also known as "double rotations". ITMs are either of finite or infinite type. If they are of finite type they reduce to interval exchange. transformations (lETs). It is argued that by using the induction procedure described by Suzuki et al., we can demonstrate several properties of double rotations. We show that almost every double rotation is of finite type, with respect to Lebesgue measure. Further we show that a typical double rotation is uniquely ergodic. Next we consider complexity. It is trivially true that, in the case of lETs complexity is linear. However, contrary to expectation, there are double rotat!ons with super-linear complexity. Finally we give approximations for the dimension of the set of all infinite double rotations.

Abstract:
The figure of the Double seems to invade the contemporary creation. Even if it is akin to an artistic process with an old origin, the performances of the technology now allow reproducing objects and representations. Do we still have to make the difference between the copyright of a thing and the one of a living model? The Double crystallizes the expectations and the fears of the moment. In literature, by example, W ou le souvenir d'enfance by G. Perec and the “autofiction” by Chloé Delaume intertwine fiction and reality; the artists Cindy Sherman and Sophie Calle show interesting problems too. At the cinema, many doubles meet in the French movie Dancing. At last, in the arts which implicate directly the bodies of the audience, we can evoke Daniel Buren and Felix Gonzalez-Torres's devices, as well as Yan Duyvendak's. In this way, by extending the semiotic method to the most common languages, we will try to define the contemporary artistic stakes

Abstract:
This thesis follows the interaction of "double-voicing" and "double-consciousness" in Native American literary history. It begins with surviving records from the time of colonial contact and ends with works by Leslie Marmon Silko and Thomas King, two contemporary authors of the Native American Literary Renaissance. "Double-voicing" is a common feature found in many works preserved by early anthropologists from various Native American oral traditions. However, after colonial contact this feature largely disappears from literary works written by Native American authors, when it is replaced by the societal condition "double-consciousness." With the revitalization of cultural knowledge in the mid-twentieth-century, Native authors also revitalize their rhetorical techniques in their writing and the "double-voice" feature reemerges coupled with a bicultural awareness that is carried over from "double-consciousness."

This thesis attempts to explore such precedents offered in both architecture and other areas, and apply the ideas and principles in the design of a primary school.

Orson, Patrick Harald. "Double L-theory." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/10470.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an investigation of the difference between metabolic and hyperbolic objects in a variety of settings and how they interact with cobordism and 'double cobordism', both in the setting of algebraic L-theory and in the context of knot theory. Let A be a commutative Noetherian ring with involution and S be a multiplicative subset. The Witt group of linking forms W(A,S) is defined by setting metabolic linking forms to be 0. This group is well-known for many localisations (A,S) and it is a classical fact that it forms part of a localisation exact sequence, essential to many Witt group calculations. However, much of the deeper 'signature' information of a linking form is invisible in the Witt group. The beginning of the thesis comprises the first general definition and careful investigation of the double Witt group of linking forms DW(A,S), given by the finer equivalence relation of setting hyperbolic linking forms to be 0. The treatment will include invariants, structure theorems and localisation exact sequences for various types of rings and localisations. We also make clear the relationship between the double Witt groups of linking forms over a Laurent polynomial ring and the double Witt group of those forms over the ground ring that are equipped with an automorphism. In particular we prove the isomorphism between the double Witt group of Blanchfield forms and the double Witt group of Seifert forms. In the main innovation of the thesis, we next define chain complex generalisations of the double Witt groups which we call the double L-groups DLn(A,S). In double L-theory, the underlying objects are the symmetric chain complexes of algebraic L-theory but the equivalence relation is now the finer relation of double algebraic cobordism. In the main technical result of the thesis we solve an outstanding problem in this area by deriving a double L-theory localisation exact sequence. This sequence relates the DL-groups of a localisation to both the free L-groups of A and a new group analogous to a 'double' algebraic homology surgery obstruction group of chain complexes over the localisation. We investigate the periodicity of the double L-groups via skew-suspension and surgery 'above and below the middle dimension'. We then reconcile the double L-groups with the double Witt groups, so that we also prove a double Witt group localisation exact sequence. Finally, in a topological application of double Witt and double L-groups, we apply our results to the study of doubly-slice knots. A doubly-slice knot is a knot that is the intersection of an unknotted sphere and a plane. We show that the double knot-cobordism group has a well-defined map to the DL-group of Blanchfield complexes and easily reprove some classical results in this area using our new methods.

Abstract : The problem addressed in this thesis concerns the analysis of William Charles Macready's reconstruction of Shakespeare's King John in Victorian London. During the nineteenth century, the Medieval Revival movement achieved its peak. This movement aimed at reviving the Middle Ages as the glorious birth of English culture and identity in opposition to the Ancient Roman and Greek traditions. As a consequence, artistic manifestations which expressed medieval themes gained prominence, including Shakespeare's historical plays. Macready's production of King John premiered at Royal Theatre Drury Lane on 24 October 1842, therefore, during the heyday of the Medieval Revival. My initial questioning was on the implications of this medievalist trend of the nineteenth century in Macready's production. My initial hypotheses were two: Macready's production followed the general Victorian perspective on the Middle Ages, which was romanticised and idealised; or his production maintained a more negative outlook on the medieval past, characteristic of the Renaissance period, in which Shakespeare wrote the original play. What I came to realise during this study was that in Macready's case both perspectives intertwined on the Victorian stage. My analysis is based on postmodern discussions on history, historiography, and theatre historiography, mainly supported by the works of Linda Hutcheon, Hayden White, Thomas Postlewait, and Richard Schoch. Schoch's concept of double-voiced historicism¬ permeates this thesis. From his concept, I have created the notion of double-voiced medievalism, which is the combination of two different perspectives on the Middle Ages in one artistic manifestation. The main corpus of the present analysis was Charles Shattuck's published version of Macready's prompt-book for Shakespeare's King John.

Nice, 1995. http://www.theses.fr/1995NICE2005.

Full text
Abstract:
There isn't a single reality but some illusory manifestations, that is to say some appearances which are our ralities, this is the aim of this thesis. Therefore, the point is to mention not only all the reals showing themselves unceazsingly but also those that we work out owing to language. The consequence is that there are as many reals as speeches given about the world. Another side of this study highlights the topic of the double, that is to say the otherness, the reflection, the shadow or the spectrum. Thus, we revive the predominance of illusions while constructing the reals that we conquer. Besides, we've decided to rehabilitate appearances and fantasies. We've gone against philosophy and science whose common fault is to cogitate endlessly, to sacrifice everything to intelligence and to the wish for truth

Abstract:

Christian, Colton. "Doubly Double Negative: When Not Being Negative is More Important than Being Positive." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/22723.

Abstract:
When people are asked to compare themselves to others, they frequently engage in self-enhancement. Further, prior work has shown that when engaging in self-enhancement, people tend to downplay how often they engage in negative behaviors to a greater extent than they highlight how often they engage in positive behaviors. Interestingly, the opposite pattern is shown for traits: people highlight their positive traits to a greater extent than they downplay their negative traits. In the current work, we examined direct and indirect social comparisons for sets of health, eating, social, and moral dimensions. Across our first 7 studies, we demonstrated that people downplayed negative aspects of the self to a greater extent than they highlighted positive aspects of the self when the aspect was not self-relevant, while people showed little to no preference for downplaying negative aspects of the self relative to highlighting positive aspects of the self when the aspect was self-relevant. In Study 8, we demonstrated that this pattern is partially mediated by recall of feedback about the average other student, but not by recall of one’s self-standing. Together these findings integrate the different patterns of self-enhancement shown for behaviors and traits by demonstrating that differences in the self-relevance of the dimension may be the best cue as to whether people are most likely to self-enhance by downplaying negatives or emphasizing positives.

Paris 8, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011PA083487.

Full text
Abstract:
The starting point in this thesis is the need to assert the unity between body and mind through the “act” of double. It is an act that is both aesthetic and ethical, it implies an effort to transcend the self and ordinary perceptions in order to construct new realities. The double manifests to those who are able to detach from the parameters of representation that trap us into similarities and identity. It manifests to those who make an effort to abandon their limits and to grasp this “other” reality as "the double of life", as called for by Artaud in his Theater and its Double. It is creative, it creates an enactment and creates the power of what is false, in what G. Deleuze understands to be “the most exact enactment that correlates to the maximum of difference”. Who performs this act? Impersonal forces that go beyond the human realm perform this act, they precipitate cruelty, and force us into transcending subjective reflection and move us towards an act of impersonal creation. Who acts? It is certainly not the individual who does, but the cosmic will to create and the power of the earth itself. The act of double is tragedy, cruelty and force because it enwraps the body-mind in an extreme relation with life and death. This thesis aims to decipher both this act and the presence of shamanism in the universe brought forth by myth and the prehistory of philosophy, all the way up to the ideas of G. Deleuze who stands at the heart of this tradition. It echoes C. Castañeda in that it is an act of initiation that restores belief in this world allowing us to return transformed. The Double, the cruelty, the creative act, the effort, to step out of one’s self, impersonal forces, forces of the earth, sacred plants, sacred medicinal plants, will to power, the will to create in the cosmic realm, Repetition of the Difference, simulacra, the power of the Signifier, Acts of Fabulation, Acts of Resistance (Existence), philosophy and the Theater of Cruelty, the sacrifice, the ritual, the myth, staging a scene for Psychological or spiritual healing, healing and creating, prescient thinking, mysteries, trance, ecstasy, mystical introspection, inherent body thought, mystical states, the outer limits between life and death, shamanism, initiation experiences, heightened perception, out of body experiences. Getting out one’s self, of one’s own boundaries, from the duality of perceptions and representations, of the identity, of the duplicate, and its reflections. To ratify the act, the random forces of life, the creation of multiple realities, a cosmic subjectivity

Mohamed, Nisha. "Double insurance and contribution." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2013. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/367860/.

Abstract:
Fraud is always a concern when an insurer issues a policy to an assured. An assured can take out numerous policies and claim indemnity under all the policies, which would result in the assured receiving more than he is entitled to. Is the fear of fraud justifiable and are such exclusions or limitations in insurance contracts preventing recovery where there is other insurance effective? Further, is there sufficient protection for insurers by way of contribution from other insurers. It is beneficial to look at the history and development of the law of insurance, to understand how the law relating to double insurance has developed and the factors the courts may take into account when deciding such issues. The courts in many jurisdictions have tried to deal with the problems which have arisen as a result of such clauses. The courts have also dealt with the question of whether the assured is or should be given any protection when double insurance arises, and if so, whether the insurer has to pay out under the insurance policy. However, where there are rateable proportion clauses with other types of clauses, the solution is not that clear. It is quite common for judges, when dealing with such cases, to conclude that the case before it is not a case of double insurance. In some cases, even though the trial judge may hold that the case before him, on the facts, were sufficient to give rise to double insurance, on appeal, the appeal courts have come to the conclusion that the facts of the case do not give rise to one of double insurance. This clearly shows what a difficult concept double insurance is. This has resulted in the courts not actually being able, even till now, to provide any real solid rules or guidelines on double insurance . Further, even though an assured has taken out insurance with numerous insurers he will not be able to recover more than the loss he has actually suffered. This is the general principle of indemnity. The next problem for an assured is then, from which insurer the assured can seek recovery from. Is there a particular order when seeking recovery or can he recover from whichever insurer he chooses? At the moment, the law on this is also unclear.

This thesis, based on documents and specific works, is divided into three parts. The publisher and his "double" : an essay on the theatrical transformation of a text by its publication, on the powers and compulsion which are related to it, on the influence which publication has on writing. The ways of scripture : a selection of published works (books separately presented, articles and extracts included in the volume) which enlighten the publisher's "double" to us. Presentation of a catalogue : comments on how a catalogue mentioning two hundred titles of general literature, essays and documents - the actes sud one - has been set up. In the supplement are included a selective bibliography, a bio-bibli- ographical notice referring to the author and a short description of the "decentralisation"'s influence on the experience here described

Abstract:
Given a finite Weyl group W_fin with root system Phi_fin, one can create the affine Weyl group W_aff by taking the semidirect product of the translation group associated to the coroot lattice for Phi_fin, with W_fin. The double affine Weyl semigroup W can be created by using a similar semidirect product where one replaces W_fin with W_aff and the coroot lattice with the Tits cone of W_aff. We classify cocovers and covers of a given element of W with respect to the Bruhat order, specifically when W is associated to a finite root system that is irreducible and simply laced. We show two approaches: one extending the work of Lam and Shimozono, and its strengthening by Milicevic, where cocovers are characterized in the affine case using the quantum Bruhat graph of W_fin, and another, which takes a more geometrical approach by using the length difference set defined by Muthiah and Orr.
Doctor of Philosophy
The Bruhat order is a way of organizing elements of the double affine Weyl semigroup so that we have a better understanding of how the elements interact. In this dissertation, we study the Bruhat order, specifically looking for when two elements are separated by exactly one step in the order. We classify these elements and show that there are only finitely many of them.

Dang, Hong Lam.

Full text
Abstract:
Fractured rock masses modeling is a challenge issue in many field of industry including but not limited to oiland gas exploitation. In the literature, fractured rock masse are in many cases recognized as double permeability medium in which fracture network provides the primary permeability and rock matrix plays asthe second one. The idea of dissociation of flow inside the fracture network and the matrix, the double permeability, is still challenged for fractured reservoirs. Numerous contributions on this issue have been presented in the past could be cast in two main approaches: continuum media approach and discontinuous approach. Each approach has its advantages and limitations. To overcome the limitation and to take advantage of these two approaches, the Embedded Fractured Continuum Approach (EFCA) which borrows the concept of continuum models and also incorporates the effect of explicit fractures is considered in this thesis. The principal idea of this approach lies on the concept of fracture cell representing a porous medium that has their own properties calculated from the properties of porous matrix and fractures intersecting it.The development in this work was conducted by using the library source code DEAL.II. The accuracy of EFCA was investigated through different verifications. Through some applications: determination of effective hydro-mechanical properties of an actual site, estimation of well production in which necessary fractures are modeled explicitly, we demonstrate the performance of the EFCA in the modeling fracture drock masses as well as the effect of double porosity and double permeability on behaviours of fractured reservoirs

Abstract:
In the last decade photoredox catalysis has emerged as an important new tool for organic chemists. The especially mild conditions and the broad range of reactions accessible using this methodology had a beneficial effect on the exploitation of radical reactions on otherwise labile substrates. Herein we report our work in this fast developing area and our efforts into the double functionalisation of styrenoid double bonds. We disclosed a new methodology for the room temperature photoredox catalysed alkoxy- and amino-arylation of styrenes using diaryl iodonium tetrafluoroborates and diazonium salts as aryl radical precursors. This methodology allows the successful regioselective coupling of three disparate components together and can be expanded to a wide range of alcohol nucleophiles, nitriles and water in moderate to good yields. The mild conditions employed permit the effective reaction of electron-rich styrenes and the tolerance of halogen functionalities, thus opening the possibility to further molecular elaboration. We then moved to explore the possibility of oxymethylnitrilation of styrenes and of the sysnthesis of heterocyclic cores via internal trapping with a nucleophile. Pleasingly, we were able to develop a mild and general methodology for the methylnitrilation of styrenes using simple and cheap bromoacetonitrile and photoredox catalysis. Furthermore, the synthesis of tetrahydrofuran and dihydrofuran cores was achieved in a single step, allowing us to synthesise tricyclic cores, maintaining functionisable handles such as halogens and ester groups. Finally, we decided to explore the possibility to add an azide functionality. After extensive optimisation, we were pleased to discover reaction conditions allowing for a switchable reactivity: under light irradiation we could perform an azidation reaction followed by addition of a nucleophile of choice; excluding the light from the reaction conditions, we could perform a double azidation reaction. The mild reaction conditions ensured the previously observed tolerance of functional groups; furthermore, we used a more sustainable copper-based photoredox catalyst.

Abstract:
Nested complementation plays an important role in expressing counter- i.e. star-free and first-order definable languages and their hierarchies. In addition, methods that compile phonological rules into finite-state networks use double-nested complementation or “double negation”. This paper reviews how the double-nested complementation extends to a relatively new operation, generalized restriction (GR), coined by the author (Yli-Jyrä and Koskenniemi 2004). This operation encapsulates a double-nested complementation and elimination of a concatenation marker, diamond, whose finite occurrences align concatenations in the arguments of the operation. The paper demonstrates that the GR operation has an interesting potential in expressing regular languages, various kinds of grammars, bimorphisms and relations. This motivates a further study of optimized implementation of the operator.

Abstract:
This graduate work is a construction proposal based on a child safety seat, designed to reduce ergonomic problems related to installation and use. The main goal is safer child transports. Initially child safety seats are investigated from a broad perspective. A summary of the problems form the basis for further design work. A market survey is carried out to control the supply of child safety seats in Sweden, followed by concept development. A concept consisting of a separate base with a 360 degree rotation function is deemed most interesting to develop further. A digital model of the structure gets developed and imported to DHM software by which an evaluation takes place in the form of an OWAS analysis. It is concluded that the construction can potentially improve safety for children during transportation. It’s also noted that rear-facing child safety seats are preferred to forward facing and that there is more work to do in this area for both vehicle and child safety seat manufacturers.

Abstract:
This research develops and analyses a new set of agent-based models for pricing European options and option portfolios in the context of double auctions. After the financial crisis of 2008, it became obvious that the banking industry had been over-reliant on mathematical models such as Black-Scholes in pricing financial derivatives despite their major assumptions such as the efficiency of markets, the homogeneity and the risk-neutrality of traders, and the limitations in evaluating the risk itself. Although the Black-Scholes framework is regarded as the cornerstone of arbitrage-free pricing of financial derivatives, it does not involve market microstructure in forming option prices. In this research, I add a simulated market component to the existing option pricing methodology through modelling automated option traders and running them on various auction-based mechanisms. My simulation model consists of three consecutive steps: asset pricing, automated traders, and market mechanisms. Firstly, I simulate asset prices beyond Black and Scholes’ initial assumption which also involve fat-tailed distributions and mean-reverting aspects of risk-free interest rates that are common in most underlying markets. Secondly, I design option traders according to my extended version of Information- Inventory-Knowledge-Behaviour (IIKB) framework. While the information and knowledge layers of the framework involve gathering and computing basic statistical parameters of the market, the behavioural layer is designed using three sublayers which are responsible for determining the option price, the quantity to bid/ask and the proxy trading algorithm. I also use Zero- Intelligence (ZI) and indifference pricing techniques along with the Black- Scholes formula to generate heterogeneous option prices. For proxy trading algorithms, I re-purposed well-known inventory- and information-based trading models to deal with options. I also use popular ZIP and GD trading algorithms to model the behaviour of speculative option traders. Finally, in the third step, I feed the orders generated from automated traders to different mechanisms and analyse the obtained option prices. First, I consider direct double auction which has the Dominant Strategy Incentive Compatibility (DSIC) property, so that traders submit only truthful orders. I develop option prices. I also analyse the allocative efficiency and budget-balance of the mechanism. Then, I run trading agents with proxy trading algorithms in an online double auction. I evaluate the obtained option prices and the performance of each proxy trading algorithm used. Another important aspect of the research is the new perspective on pricing of compound financial contracts such as option portfolios using a combinatorial exchange. I explain the substitutability and complementarity of options in given option portfolios, and apply these concepts to the design of the combinatorial exchange for option portfolios. I also illustrate the expressiveness and flexibility of using combinatorial exchanges through a Tree-Based Bidding Language. The main contributions of this research are the design and implementation of a direct double auction for multi-unit and atomic orders, revealed mechanisms for forecasting traders, inventory- and information-based option traders, Logarithmic Market Scoring Rule (LMSR) option pricing based on option portfolios, and the application of combinatorial exchanges to the realm of option pricing.
