Full textThis work investigates the flow in a symmetric channel with a sudden expansion and contraction, creating two facing cavities, a so called double cavity. Double cavity flow at moderate Reynolds numbers is studied experimentally, numerically and analytically, as the inflow velocity and the distance between the cavities are varied. The focus is put on the interaction of the two shear layers and the intracavitary hydrodynamic feedback in the incompressible limit.Experimentally, standard 2D2C particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements in a given spanwise plane provide information on the instantaneous and mean velocity flow fields. Laser Doppler velocimetry and time resolved 2D2C PIV measurements reveal the richness of the streamwise fluctuating velocity spectra. The flow is characterized based on times series, recorded in one of the cavity's shear layers, for a wide range of inflow velocities and cavity distances. Two dimensional and three dimensional direct numerical simulations, which give easy access to the entire flow field, are used to study the intracavitary hydrodynamic feedback mechanism. Vorticity fields, obtained from 2D numerical simulations, show the importance of the recirculating intracavitary back flow. Vorticity packages, injected by the oscillating and impinging shear layer at the downstream cavity edge, are advected upstream in the recirculation region, creating a ``carousel-like'' pattern. The interaction of this vortex carousel with the oscillating shear layer is found to be responsible for the self-sustained oscillations observed experimentally in single and double cavity flow. The quantification of three characteristic time scales of the rotation allows to identify in which regime the flow resides.Temporal and spatio-temporal inviscid linear stability analyses are applied to a one dimensional base flow of single and double cavity flows. To account for the finite extent of the system, the spatio-temporal linear stability analysis is conditioned by a so called Kulikowskii condition, which allows the reflection of hydrodynamic instability waves within the cavity domain. This feedback mechanism yields a set of discrete, non-harmonic frequencies, some of which compare well with experimental results

Full textUnder the current energy context, the development of solar energy goes through its large scale development, especially in urban areas. Active and integrated solutions, such as photovoltaic double-skins, allow both the heat recovery for building needs and the exploitation of building envelope as collecting surface. Furthermore, this configuration limits the efficiency loss and the acceleration of ageing process due to overheating of the solar cells. Indeed, in this configuration, the photovoltaic panels are separated from the building by an air channel and the thermally driven flow that develops in the channel helps to evacuate the heat absorbed by the panels. However, the global behaviour of the photovoltaic double-skin is complex and not yet fully understood. This study is part of a scientific project on multi-scale modelling and experimentation of BIPV components. It focuses on the experimentation of the natural convection phenomenon in double-façades. An experimental apparatus developed during C. Daverat's thesis models the double-façade by a vertical channel with wall heating. The working fluid is water so as to avoid radiative heat transfer between walls. The experimental apparatus consists of a 65 cm high vertical channel, with isoflux heating, immersed in a 1.5 m high water tank. The fluid flow is instrumented with measurements of heat flux, wall temperature and velocity. The velocity measurements are made by Particle Image Velocimetry and Laser Doppler Velocimetry. Two heating configurations are studied: symmetrical (same heat flux is imposed on both walls) and asymmetrical (only one wall is heated, the other one being adiabatic). For the study with symmetrical heating configuration, experimental data from Daverat's thesis are analysed by a zonal approach. The channel is split into several zones and a scaling analysis is conducted in order to explain experimental observations. Thus, the study focuses on heat transfer, pressure evolution in the channel and fluctuations, in particular, the evaluation of the maximum Reynolds stress. The asymmetrical configuration is studied for the transient regime and the steady regime. For the transient regime, early stage (first hours) is characterised in terms of wall temperature, velocity and two- or three-dimensional flow behaviour. A large-scale reversal flow is observed. The impact of external thermal stratification is also studied. For the steady regime, thermal and dynamic behaviours are studied and two different states are distinguished and characterised. Reversal flows are also observed. Finally, the influence of the Prandtl number and the channel width is discussed

Full textThe present investigation deals with natural convection flow in a vertical open-ended channel with wall constant heat flux. This study falls under the framework of research on passive cooling of building integrated PV components. For this purpose, a numerical code developed with Finite Differences scheme is used to solve Navier-Stokes equations and simulate the natural convection in a channel. This problem is difficult to solve because the writing of inlet/outlet boundary conditions remains an open problem. First, our work consists of studying different boundary conditions for the the numerical benchmark AMETH. The work carried out has enabled a first choice of boundary conditions. The study then focuses on numerical and experimental quantification and qualification for two fluids : air ( convection - radiation) and water ( pure convection) . Experimental and numerical results were compared and discrepancies were analyzed. Several phenomenological aspects ( surface radiation, thermophysical properties variation, Prandtl number variation ) were discussed in order to characterize their influence on flow and heat transfer. Finally, in order to provide some answers on dynamical boundary conditions, we simulated natural convection of a channel inside a cavity and tried a modeling

Full textThe rise of e-commerce has significantly altered consumer purchasing behaviors, driving them towards online shopping. This transformation has rendered traditional single-channel supply chains insufficient, often to the detriment of profits. In response, many companies now add an online presence alongside their physical stores. This evolution has led businesses, both small and large, to adopt dual or multi-channel distribution supply chains to expand their customer base and increase their market share. Therefore, this thesis aims to contribute to the management of operations related to the supply chain, to examine the dual-channel distribution supply chain with reverse logistics, and to define sales, pricing, and service strategies to establish a win-win policy between the two sales channels

Full textThe emergent applications in the Terahertz (THz) frequencies range stimulate the development of active and passive rapid devices as much as of emitters and detectors working in this domain. Actually existent devices do not respond to all industry needs because of too high consumption, size and cost, and other inconvenient. A solution for realisation of emitters and detectors could come from plasma-wave transistor that we studied. These devices are based on 1I1-V HEMT and utilised a particular behaviour of electronic transport. Measurements have shown the possibility of emission and detection of radiation at about 1 THz. From the other hand it is necessary to realize electronic active devices (transistors) able to operate near the THz range. This is necessary for realisation of rapid integrated circuits such as amplifiers, mixers and so on. To do this we have chosen to study two kinds of double-gate transistors. Measurements have shown the increasing of static and dynamic performances (maximum drain current and drain current saturation, efficiency of charge control, transconductance, output conductance, operation frequencies). Besides, the same performances can be obtained at lower consumption. Simulations show that performances could be improved even more

Full textIn this work it is presented an analysis of the analog operation of multiple gate transistors, evaluating the Early Voltage, the open-loop voltage gain, the transconductance over the drain current ratio (gm/IDS), the drain conductance and, especially, the harmonic distortion exhibited by these devices. Along the work, FinFETs, Gate-All-Around (GAA) devices with the Graded-Channel (GC) structure and MOS transistors without junctions (Junctionless - JL) were studied. Initially, an analysis of the harmonic distortion presented by conventional and biaxially strained FinFETs with several fin widths (Wfin) and channel lengths (L) was performed, when these devices were operating in saturation as single transistor amplifiers. In this analysis, the non-linearities were evaluated through the extraction of the second and the third order harmonic distortions (HD2 and HD3, respectively), and it was shown that the presence of strain has negligible influence in HD2, but slightly changes HD3. When the open loop voltage gain of the devices is taken into consideration, narrower conventional transistors present a huge advantage with respect to the strained ones in terms of HD2. Also, it was perceived that both HD2 and HD3 of strained FinFETs worsen with the temperature decrease, especially in stronger inversion. In the sequence, an analysis of the HD3 presented by conventional and strained FinFETs of several fin widths and channel lengths operating in the triode regime was performed. These devices were applied to 2-MOS balanced structures, showing that the presence of the strain does not influence significantly the HD3, but reduces the resistance in the channel of the transistors (RON), which is not good for resistive structures as the ones evaluated. In this analysis, it can also be observed an HD3 improvement of 30 dB when VGT is increased from zero up to 1,0 V, where narrower devices present transfer characteristics more linear than the wider ones. Then, it was studied the distortion presented by GAA and GC GAA devices operating in the triode regime, applied to 2-MOS structures. In this case, it could be perceived that GC GAAs with longer lightly doped regions present better HD3 in comparison to the other devices for VGT higher than 2.0 V. In the evaluation of these structures as a function of the temperature, it could be seen that for VGT higher than 1.1 V, HD3 strongly depends on the temperature and worsens as the temperature decreases. The study involving JL transistors was focused on their analog parameters, comparing them to the ones presented by triple gate devices or FinFETs. In moderate and strong inversions, Junctionless showed lower values for gm/IDS with respect to triple gate devices biased at a similar current level. However, the dependence of gm/IDS from Junctionless with the temperature was also smaller than the one presented by FinFETs. Junctionless and FinFETs exhibited distinct behaviors for the Early voltage and the open-loop voltage gain as a function of the temperature. These parameters always improve with the temperature raise in JL devices whereas they exhibit their maximum values around room temperatures for FinFETs. In the proximity of the threshold voltage, Junctionless with fin width of 30 nm presented Early voltage and intrinsic gain larger than 80 V and 57 dB, respectively, whereas FinFETs exhibited Early voltage of 35 V and gain of 50 dB. For all the studies performed in this work, the probable causes of the non-linearities were pointed out, from analytic models that could correlate the physical work of the devices with the experimental results.

Full textSince its birth, the technology of barcode is well investigated for automatic identification. When reading, a barcode can be degraded by a blur , caused by a bad focalisation and/ or a camera movement. The goal of this thesis is the optimisation of the receiver of 1D and 2D barcode from hidden and double Markov model and blind statistical estimation approaches. The first phase of our work consists of modelling the original image and the observed one using Hidden Markov model. Then, new algorithms for joint blur estimation and symbol detection are proposed, which take into account the non-stationarity of the hidden Markov process. Moreover, a method to select the most relevant model of the blur is proposed, based on model selection criterion. The method is also used to estimate the blur length. Finally, a new algorithm based on the double Markov chain is proposed to deal with digital communication through a long memory channel. Estimation of such channel is not possible using the classical detection algorithms based on the maximum likelihood due to the prohibitive complexity. New algorithm giving good trade off between complexity and performance is provided

Full textSugarcane is one of the most important crops in the Brazilian agribusiness chain, besides its great branch in the international context as a renewable and sustainable energy source. Through the competitiveness that sugar mills experience and through the growth perspectives of the sector, this study focuses the deep soil preparation for sugarcane crop renewal, since it provides a larger soil volume to be explored by the root system. Furthermore, the machinery traffic controlled by a smaller number of soil preparation operations, reduces farmer´s production costs. The general objective was, therefore, evaluate soil preparation methods and develop a controlled traffic system in the area, in order to propose to the farmer a cost reduction in the farm soil management along with yield increase and extension of the longevity of the crop. As a result of the imposed treatments it was possible to conclude that by the root length analysis in all depths of the Deep Soil Preparation, root length, area and volume were greater. Soil resistance to penetration in the Deep Soil Preparation system was much less in relation to the other treatments, assuming values of 0.29 MPa and 0.45 Mpa in the 20-40 and 40-60 cm layers, respectively. The above ground evaluations showed leaf area index of 7.1 for the Deep Soil Preparation, much higher in relation to the other treatments. Operation costs at planting time were much less for the Deep Soil Preparation, 33% and 58% smaller than for the Double Minimum Tillage and Double conventional, respectively. Soil movement caused by Deep Preparation was up to 80% less in relation to the Double conventional. The controlled machinery traffic that the Deep Soil Preparation provides, reduced up to 70% the farming operations, therefore presenting a lower fuel consumption, a reduction of the time used in farming operations, reduction of the machinery park, and a lower operational cost.

Full textOne of the main challenges of the current and future colliders TeVatron and LHC is the discovery of physics beyond the Standard Model. This goal may be accessible through precision measurements in the top quark sector. Deviations from theoretical predictions may bring to light the first indirect signs of new physics. The work exposed in this thesis deals with the production cross-section of top quark pairs via the strong interaction, within both D0 and ATLAS collaborations. Firstly, I've worked at D0 on the improvement of the reconstruction of soft electrons, in order to tag b-jets produced in top-antitop quarks events. Then I focused myself on the measurement of the top quark pair production cross-section with 420 pb-1 of D0 data. The measured cross-section is in agreement with the Standard Model expectations. In the ATLAS experiment, I tried to develop a procedure in ordrer to select top quark pair events, using the knowledge and the techniques from the D0 experiment. This work also highlighted the main systematic sources that can affect the sensitivity of the measurement. After one year of data taking at low luminosity, this preliminary analysis obtains a sensitivity at a few percent level, leading to a good discovery potential of new physic signs, like charged Higgs bosons. These new particles appear in non minimal standard models, and modify the phenomenology of top pair events. This new analysis has shown a good sensitivity for some regions of the parameter space

Full textObjective: This study synthesized electrospun polymer-based scaffolds containing ciprofloxacin (CIP) and doxycycline (DOX), as a scaffold mimic of Double Antibiotic Paste (DAP) and determined, in vitro, its mechanical properties, chemical composition, and antimicrobial effectiveness against multiple endodontic bacterium. Methods: Polydioxanone sutures (PDS) were dissolved in 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFP), mixed with CIP/DOX (i.e., 50%), and electrospun under optimized conditions into fibrous scaffolds. Tensile testing was used to evaluate the mechanical properties. Antimicrobial efficacy was determined over time using aliquots collected at 1, 4, 7, 14 day and agar diffusion assays. Two-Way Anova. Significance P < 0.05. Results: Tensile strength (MPa) of the CIP/DOX scaffold did not show significant difference from the control (pure PDS). Elongation at break (%) did show a significant difference between CIP/DOX scaffolds and the control group. Young’s modulus of elasticity (MPa) showed a significant difference between CIP/DOX scaffolds and the control. CIP-containing scaffolds did not inhibit Gram-negative (F. nucleatum and P. gingivalis) bacteria as effectively when compared to Gram-positive bacteria (E. faecalis and S. gordina). DOX-containing scaffolds showed less inhibition against Gram-positive (E. faecalis and S. gordina) bacteria then Gram-negative bacteria (F. nucleatum and P. gingivalis). In combination, CIP/DOX scaffolds showed significant inhibition against G(-) and G(+) bacteria. Conclusion: Electrospun double antibiotic scaffold demonstrated increased antimicrobial efficacy proving the potential for future clinical use to disinfect the RCS in permanent immature necrotic teeth to aid in regenerative treatment and or in persistent infections.

Full textVoltage dependent calcium channels share a strong structural homology with voltage gated potassium channels. Both families present a conserved series of charged residues present in the S4 helix of each domain that most certainly accounts for the voltage sensitivity of these proteins. Moreover, in both cases, the S6 helices seem to be lining up the pore. How does the movement of the S4 sensors translate into channel opening remains elusive in Ca2+ channels. Following the publication of the crystal structure of the Kv1.2 channel in 2005, the group of Roderick MacKinnon proposed that the voltage sensor is mechanically coupled to the S6 pore through the amphipathic S4-S5 helix that crosses over the S6 inner helix from the same subunit. To determine if the S4-S5 linker, that runs parallel to the membrane plane inside the cell in the Kv1.2 three-D structure, plays a role in the activation of the CaV2.3 calcium channel, we have studied by double mutant cycle analysis the coupling between the S4-S5 linker and the S6 helix of domain II of this channel. The activation energies, Gact, obtained from classical two electrode voltage clamp experiments in the presence of auxiliary subunits CaV2 and CaV3 displayed significant activation coupling coefficients for the pairs of residues V593G/L699G, V593G/A700G, V593G/A702G, S595G/V703G L596G/L699G, L596G/A700G, L596G/I701G, L596G/A702G, L596G/V703G, L596G/D704G, M597G/I701G, and S602G/I701G. None of these pairs displayed significant coupling in the inactivation mechanism, suggesting that the effects observed were specific to activation. Altogether, our results strongly suggest that the S4-S5 linker and the S6 helix of domain II are actively involved in the activation of CaV2.3.

Full textVoltage-activated T-type calcium channel CaV3.2 plays an important role in neuronal excitability and in pain perception. CaV3.2 channel bears a strong structural and functional homology with voltage-dependent NaV channels. In particular, these channels are activated by relatively small depolarization and display faster activation and inactivation kinetics than the L-type CaV channel. High-resolution crystal structures of bacterial NaVAb (Payandeh et al. 2011; Payandeh et al. 2012) and NaVRh (Zhang et al. 2012) suggest that the amphiphilic helix S4S5 in Domain II may be coupled with S6 residues both in Domain II and in the adjacent Domain III during channel activation. To determine whether residues in the S4S5 helix of Domain II are functionally coupled with residues in the S6 helix in Domain II and Domain III during the voltage-dependent activation of CaV3.2, a double mutant cycle analysis was performed by introducing pairs of glycine and alanine residues in the S4S5 helix of Domain II and the S6 region of Domains II and III. Biophysical properties were measured with the cut-open oocyte technique. Activation gating was measured for 47 single mutants and 14 pairs of mutants. Strong coupling energies (ΔΔGinteract > 2 kcal mol-1) were reported for 3 pairs of mutants introduced in IIS4S5/IIS6 and IIS4S5/IIIS6. No significant coupling was observed between IIS4S5 and IVS6. Altogether, our results demonstrate that the S4S5 and S6 helices from neighboring domains are energetically coupled during the activation of the low voltage-gated T-type CaV3.2 channel.
