Abstract:
In this paper, new variations of some well-known permutation statistics are introduced and studied. Firstly, a double-descent of a permutation π is defined as a position i where πi ≥ 2πi+1. By proofs by induction and direct proofs, recursive and explicit expressions for the number of n-permutations with k double-descents are presented. Also, an expression for the total number of double-descents in all n-permutations is presented. Secondly, a double-inversion of a permutation π is defined as a pair (πi,πj) where i<j but πi ≥ 2πj. The total number of double-inversions in all n-permutations is presented.

Full text
Abstract:
Double Fortune is a novel relating events taking place in Miami, Central America, and The Bahama Bank in October and November, 1983. The main character, Michael Hayden, is a free-lance music producer who has become jaded and impotent. A chance encounter on the Bay with Marisol, a Salvadoran heiress, and Hector, her brother, propels him into a complex plot to expatriate money through U.S. government channels. Willy, a brooding Cuban bodyguard hired to protect and instruct the Salvadorans, emerges as both nemesis and key to the duplicities of the scheme. The final showdown involves the four of them on the water above the Cay Sal Bank, a part of the Bahamas equidistant to their disparate worlds.

Abstract:
In this Thesis we investigate interval translation maps (ITMs) with, on the circle, two intervals, also known as "double rotations". ITMs are either of finite or infinite type. If they are of finite type they reduce to interval exchange. transformations (lETs). It is argued that by using the induction procedure described by Suzuki et al., we can demonstrate several properties of double rotations. We show that almost every double rotation is of finite type, with respect to Lebesgue measure. Further we show that a typical double rotation is uniquely ergodic. Next we consider complexity. It is trivially true that, in the case of lETs complexity is linear. However, contrary to expectation, there are double rotat!ons with super-linear complexity. Finally we give approximations for the dimension of the set of all infinite double rotations.

Abstract:
The figure of the Double seems to invade the contemporary creation. Even if it is akin to an artistic process with an old origin, the performances of the technology now allow reproducing objects and representations. Do we still have to make the difference between the copyright of a thing and the one of a living model? The Double crystallizes the expectations and the fears of the moment. In literature, by example, W ou le souvenir d'enfance by G. Perec and the “autofiction” by Chloé Delaume intertwine fiction and reality; the artists Cindy Sherman and Sophie Calle show interesting problems too. At the cinema, many doubles meet in the French movie Dancing. At last, in the arts which implicate directly the bodies of the audience, we can evoke Daniel Buren and Felix Gonzalez-Torres's devices, as well as Yan Duyvendak's. In this way, by extending the semiotic method to the most common languages, we will try to define the contemporary artistic stakes

Stigter, Shelley, and University of Lethbridge Faculty of Arts and Science. "Double-voice and double-consciousness in Native American literature." Thesis, Lethbridge, Alta. : University of Lethbridge, Faculty of Arts and Sciencec, 2005, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10133/288.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis follows the interaction of "double-voicing" and "double-consciousness" in Native American literary history. It begins with surviving records from the time of colonial contact and ends with works by Leslie Marmon Silko and Thomas King, two contemporary authors of the Native American Literary Renaissance. "Double-voicing" is a common feature found in many works preserved by early anthropologists from various Native American oral traditions. However, after colonial contact this feature largely disappears from literary works written by Native American authors, when it is replaced by the societal condition "double-consciousness." With the revitalization of cultural knowledge in the mid-twentieth-century, Native authors also revitalize their rhetorical techniques in their writing and the "double-voice" feature reemerges coupled with a bicultural awareness that is carried over from "double-consciousness."

Yuceoglu, U., O. Gu¨vendik, and V. O¨zerciyes. "Free Bending Vibrations of a Centrally Bonded Symmetric Double Lap Joint (or Symmetric Double Doubler Joint) With a Gap in Mindlin Plates or Panels." In ASME 2007 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. ASMEDC, 2007. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2007-41073.

Full text
Abstract:
In this present study, the “Free Bending Vibrations of a Centrally Bonded Symmetric Double Lap Joint (or Symmetric Double Doubler Joint) with a Gap in Mindlin Plates or Panels” are theoretically analyzed and are numerically solved in some detail. The “plate adherends” and the upper and lower “doubler plates” of the “Bonded Joint” system are considered as dissimilar, orthotropic “Mindlin Plates” joined through the dissimilar upper and lower very thin adhesive layers. There is a symmetrically and centrally located “Gap” between the “plate adherends” of the joint system. In the “adherends” and the “doublers” of the “Bonded Joint” assembly, the transverse shear deformations and the transverse and rotary moments of inertia are included in the analysis. The relatively very thin adhesive layers are assumed to be linearly elastic continua with transverse normal and shear stresses. The “damping effects” in the entire “Bonded Joint” system are neglected. The sets of the dynamic “Mindlin Plate” equations of the “plate adherends”, the “double doubler plates” and the thin adhesive layers are combined together with the orthotropic stress resultant-displacement expressions in a “special form”. This system of equations, after some further manipulations, is eventually reduced to a set of the “Governing System of the First Order Ordinary Differential Equations” in terms of the “state vectors” of the problem. Hence, the final set of the aforementioned “Governing Systems of Equations” together with the “Continuity Conditions” and the “Boundary conditions” facilitate the present solution procedure. This is the “Modified Transfer Matrix Method (MTMM) (with Interpolation Polynomials). The present theoretical formulation and the method of solution are applied to a typical “Bonded Symmetric Double Lap Joint (or Symmetric Double Doubler Joint) with a Gap”. The effects of the relatively stiff (or “hard”) and the relatively flexible (or “soft”) adhesive properties, on the natural frequencies and mode shapes are considered in detail. The very interesting mode shapes with their dimensionless natural frequencies are presented for various sets of boundary conditions. Also, several parametric studies of the dimensionless natural frequencies of the entire system are graphically presented. From the numerical results obtained, some important conclusions are drawn for the “Bonded Joint System” studied here.

Abstract:
The history of conflict between double-crested cormorants and human interest in fisheries is long and convoluted. Overall, double-crested cormorants are not major consumers of commercial and sportfish species. However, exceptions have been recorded at specific sites with documented impacts on local fisheries. Double-crested cormorants can have a significant impact on vegetation at breeding sites through normal nesting activities. Their guano is acidic and can change soil chemistry, killing ground vegetation and irreversibly damaging nest trees. Humans should avoid direct contact with excrement from wildlife, including droppings from cormorants. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) has the primary responsibility and authority for managing migratory bird populations in the U.S. This publication will focus on the double-crested cormorant, which is the most numerous and widely dispersed of the species.
