Abstract:
The population size of Australian fur seals Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus and New Zealand fur seals A. forsteri at The Skerries, Victoria was estimated in two consecutive breeding seasons, 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 using both mark-recapture procedures and aerial surveys. 675 and 746 A. p. doriferus pups and 37 and 47 A. forsteri pups were captured and marked in 1999-2000 and 2000-2001, respectively. Resights (1999-2000 N = 3; 2000-2001 N = 6) were conducted 2 - 3 days after marking and pup population estimates were calculated using a modified Lincoln-Petersen estimate. The arithmetic mean for A. p. doriferus pup abundance was 1,867 in the first season and 2,237 in the second. A. forsteri abundance was 75 and 78, respectively. The A. p. doriferus population is estimated to have increased an average of 19.7% (r = 0.18) between 1999 and 2000. The arithmetic mean from five counts of aerial photographs of total animals present at the colony was 1,758 in 1999-2000 and 2,965 in 2000-2001. Due to high variation between counts, aerial surveys proved to be an inconsistent and inaccurate method for estimating the population of fur seals at The Skerries.

Abstract:
Abstract Dorids are one of the largest nudibranch groups, encompassing more than 2000 species. One of the crucial problems with tracing the evolution of dorids is the relationship between cryptobranch dorids (gill cavity present) and phanerobranch dorids (gill cavity absent). Integrative morphological and molecular studies of the enigmatic Japanese dorid species of the cryptobranch genus Cadlina, C. japonica and ‘C.’ sagamiensis, which were collected by the Emperor of Japan (Shōwa era), are presented here for the first time. It is shown that while C. japonica does belong to the Cadlina clade, another Japanese species ‘C.’ sagamiensis is not part of the cryptobranch dorids of the family Cadlinidae, but is related to both the phanerobranch dorid family, Hexabranchidae, and to the cryptobranch family Cadlinellidae stat. nov. A new genus, Showajidaia gen. nov., and new family, Showajidaiidae fam. nov., are proposed for ‘C.’ sagamiensis, and four new species of the genus Cadlina are described based on a dorid-wide molecular phylogenetic analysis, which is the first substantial update of the dorid family system since 2010. Integration of phylogenetic data with an ontogenetic model of dorid evolution suggests that cryptobranch organization can be most reliably assessed as the ancestral state for the majority of dorids.

Abstract:
Total indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) levels (free IAA plus IAA conjugates) in Doritis pulcherrima (Doritis pulcherrima Lindley, cv. S 84-335-2) leaves were threefold lower in plants exposed to 30 d of short-day (SD) conditions than in plants exposed to 30 d of long-day (LD) conditions. Free IAA levels were also significantly lower in SD-treated leaves than those in 0 day of photoperiodic treatment and 30 d of LD. Results indicate that plants exposed to 30 d of SD contained significantly higher levels of ester-IAA and reduced amide-IAA concentrations compared to those grown under LD conditions. A high level of ester-IAA and a reduction of amide-IAA in leaves may be related to increased SD floral initiation ability in D. pulcherrima. THE breeding distribution of the Australian fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus) is restricted to offshore islands in Bass Strait, southeastern Australia (Warneke and Shaughnessy 1985). Breeding colonies are currently established on only nine islands but there is historical evidence to suggest that several other islands within Bass Strait once accommodated breeding sites (Warneke 1982). Prior to the largescale commercial hunting (1798-1825), the annual total A. p. doriferus pup production is estimated to have been between 20,000 ? 50,000 but these numbers were severely reduced as a result of overexploitation (Warneke and Shaughnessy 1985).

Abstract:
The identification and classification of unknown specimens of Arctocephalus from regions of Australasia has proven difficult. Skulls from the New Zealand fur seal (Arctocephalus forsteri) and the Australian fur seal (A. pusillus doriferus), and data from specimens of the South African fur seal (A. p. pusillus), were examined. A visual method was devised to identify and separate A. p. doriferus from A. forsteri for both sexes and for most physiological age-groups. A statistical method for morphometric separation of these species was applied to adult specimens. Characteristics of males and females for both species fell into two broad categories: sexually dimorphic – mainly those characters that increase the ability of males to hold and defend territories; and non-dimorphic – those of functional importance. Studies of geographical variation showed that adult male A. forsteri from Australia were generally larger than those from Macquarie Island and New Zealand. Characteristics of A. p. doriferus were generally larger than those of A. p. pusillus. Nine specimens of New Zealand fur seals were morphologically different from the typical A. forsteri, which indicates the presence of extreme outliers or hybrids in the sample.

AUSTRALIAN fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus) cows mature at 3 - 6 years of age and, thereafter, are able to give birth to a single pup each year (Warneke and Shaughnessy 1985; Warneke 1995). Pups are born from late October to December and are usually nursed for 8 - 11 months (Warneke and Shaughnessy 1985), however, extended dependency into a second or third year has been recorded (Stirling and Warneke 1971). At Seal Rocks, Victoria, one of nine breeding sites for A. p. doriferus (Warneke 1988; Pemberton and Kirkwood 1994), 11% of young that were observed in association with cows were older than one year (Shaughnessy and Warneke 1987).

Abstract:
A philosophical account of self-knowledge should offer more than an epistemological explanation of first-personal privilege. It should also address the many cases where the first-person perspective is not so privileged, and account for the importance of self-knowledge to a person’s social and psychological well-being. Quassim Cassam’s Self-Knowledge for Humans and John Doris’s Talking to Our Selves both emphasize the importance of these latter tasks, but neither author is wholly successful: Cassam’s argument rests on a gross distortion of the “Rationalist” picture he sets up as a foil, and Doris’s on a skeptical argument that stands in some questionable company.

Abstract:
Abstract: In his book Lack of Character (2002 Cambridge University Press) John Doris argues that both virtue ethics and common sense or folk psychology are committed to the claim that the attribution of character to persons is predictive, explanatory, and determinative of behaviour. Doris contends however that this claim is empirically false. Citing the results of experiments in the situationist research tradition in experimental social psychology, Doris argues that it is a person’s situation, and not his or her character, that determines how a person will behave in a given situation. Doris concludes that virtue ethics in particular is in need of radical revision, since the attribution of character to persons is thereby shown to be otiose at best, and empirically misleading at worst. In this essay I defend traditional virtue ethics against Doris’ situationist critique. My discussion falls into four parts. In Section 1 I set out the key claims that Doris makes about the empirical inadequacy of traditional virtue ethics. In Section 2 I describe three of the most important experiments which Doris adduces in his argument for situationism. In Section 3 I offer alternative interpretations of all three experiments, largely, but not exclusively, from an Aristotelian perspective. In Section 4 I respond to Doris’ positive account of moral character, viz., his ‘fragmentation hypothesis’ and his theory of ‘local traits’. Here I argue that Doris’ positive account is lacking in explanatory power; I suggest as well that his positive account is poorly motivated, since he has largely misunderstood the traditional concept of a moral disposition. In particular, it is crucial to Doris’ critique of virtue ethics that virtues and traits of character are cross-situationally consistent (or ‘robust’); since according to Doris, it will only be attributions of character so conceived that are shown to be empirically inadequate by the situationist experiments he discusses. Doris’ notion of a robust disposition is however alien to Aristotle and the virtue ethicists who are inspired by him. I demonstrate that the virtue ethicist conceives of a virtue as a rational disposition. A virtue is a disposition to act and feel in an appropriate way as a result of and in response to rational considerations about the good in particular circumstances. The acquisition of virtue is a difficult moral achievement because it involves the complex and interdependent development of both the intellectual and emotional capacities of a human being. It is precisely because the virtues are not robust traits in Doris’ sense that the deliverances of practical reason, even when it is operating in its fullest capacity, will issue in decisions in particular circumstances that cannot be captured by the notion of ‘cross-situational consistency’. I conclude that insofar as that is the case Doris has managed to make very little dialectical contact with the concept of virtue as that has been conceived in the virtue ethics tradition.

Abstract:
Abstract Objectives The definition of an accurate target for a treat-to-target approach in SLE has been challenging over past years, and recently the DORIS definitions of remission were presented by the international DORIS task force. It was our aim to assess the frequency of DORIS remission and LLDAS in our SLE cohort and their agreement with the treating physician’s (DORIS-) independent remission judgement. Patient characteristics leading to lack of agreement and incoherence ought to be identified. Methods In this monocentric cross-sectional study, patients with SLE were enrolled and assessed between September 2016 and December 2017. DORIS remission definitions were applied and after the clinical consultation, the treating physicians gave his/her opinion on whether the patient was in remission. Regression analyses were performed to identify parameters influencing physician remission. Results A total of 233 patients were included (87.6% female); 99 (42.5%) patients fulfilled any of the four DORIS remission definitions, while 126 patients were in remission according to their physician’s judgement. We observed discordance in the assessment of remission in 53 patients (22.7%). Physician remission was influenced by disease activity [odds ratio (OR) 0.76, 95% CI: 0.63, 0.90], disease and/or treatment-related damage (OR 0.78, 95% CI: 0.62, 0.98) and the presence of ds-DNA antibodies (OR 2.47, 95% CI: 1.06, 6.04). Conclusions DORIS remission proved an achievable target in our outpatient clinic. Still we found discordance regarding DORIS remission and the treating physician’s judgement with a greater number of patients considered in remission by their physicians.

The subject of ethnic identity in antiquity has a long-established – if somewhat dubious – pedigree. From as early as the end of the eighteenth century, scholars such as Friedrich von Schlegel were applying themselves to the art, customs and political forms which were thought to characterise GreekStämmesuch as the Dorians, Ionians, Aeolians and Athenians. It was the nineteenth century, however, which witnessed a more systematic treatment of ancient ethnicity, as scholarly intuitions were subjected to the rigorous interrogation that was demanded by the newly-established discipline ofAltertumswissenschaft. Typical of the new breed of professional scholars was Karl Otfried Müller, who devoted himself to analysing theVolksgeistof groups such as the Etruscans, the Minyans and – most famously – the Dorians.

Abstract:
Background:Defining remission for SLE as a suitable target for a treat to target (T2T) approach has been a major challenge in the past years. A few years back, four definitions of remission were presented by the international DORIS task force.[1] Parameters included in the definition are clinical activity (cSLEDAI), steroid dose, immunosuppressive therapy, serology and physician global assessment (PGA). In particular the PGA, its threshold and general utility have been and still are discussed controversially. Objectives:It was our aim to evaluate the added value of PGA in remission assessment. Methods:In this monocentric cross-sectional study, patients with SLE according to the 1997 American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria were enrolled and assessed between September 2016 and December 2017. Two different definitions of remission were applied. The internationally accepted DORIS remission and a modified DORIS remission excluding PGA. Factors influencing PGA were assessed in the entire cohort. Regression analyses were used to assess differences between patients in DORIS and modified DORIS remission. Results:A total of 233 patients were included (87.6% female). 98 patients (41.9%) fulfilled any of the four DORIS remission definitions, while 154 patients (66.1%) were in any modified remission in which PGA was excluded. In general, PGA rating was associated with disease activity (clinical SLEDAI; p=<0.0001), depression (Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale; p=0.049), pain reported by the patient (numeric rating scale; p=<0.0001) and hypocomplementemia (p=<0.0001). Damage (SLICC damage index, SDI) did not influence PGA (p=0.98). Both, DORIS and modified DORIS remission were associated with lower damage (p=0.026; p=0.003), lower pain on NRS (p=0.001; p=0.013), normal complement (p=0.0005; p=0.005) and better illness perception (p=0.006; p=0.023). Patients in modified DORIS remission had a tendency for more immunosuppressive therapy (p=0.046).Conclusion:Exclusion of PGA in remission assessment led to an increased number of patients in remission. Clinical parameters and factors associated with DORIS remission vs. modified DORIS remission were similar, hence the added value of PGA in our cohort regarding remission assessment is questionable. The use and especially the correct threshold of PGA for remission still has to be discussed.References:[1]van Vollenhoven, Ronald; Voskuyl, Alexandre; Bertsias, George; Aranow, Cynthia; Aringer, Martin; Arnaud, Laurent et al. Abstract:
DORIS is a kind of advanced space-geodetic techniques applied in satellite orbit tracking and measuring. As the first ocean dynamic environmental satellite in China, the HY-2 satellite is equipped with the Doppler orbitography and radiopositioning integrated by satellite (DORIS) tracking system for the precise orbit determination. In particular, the investigation of our work has focused on accuracy analysis of orbit determination using simulated DORIS data given different observation noises, besides the relationship is investigated between accuracy and computation time and the number of ground beacons evenly distributed around the world. Experiment results show that observation noises can affect the accuracy of orbit determination directly, and the number of DORIS ground beacons decides the accuracy and computation time of obit determination in the condition of ground beacons are evenly distributed around the world, therefore, during the process of obit determination, we should optimize the ground beacon station distribution to achieve the best accuracy of obit determination using DORIS tracking data.

Abstract:
Australian fur-seals Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus and New Zealand fur-seals A. forsteri haul-out (come ashore) at the north end of Montague Island. They were counted from study boats on 82 occasions during nine trips to the island, each of about one week, between November 1997 and November 1998, and in July 1999 and April 2000. Highest numbers were recorded between August and October 1998, and more animals were ashore during 1997 and 1998 than Irvine et al. (1997) observed in 1993 and 1994. The maximum number of A. p. doriferus recorded ashore in this study was 540 in October 1998, compared with a little over 300 observed in September 1993. There are reports of a few fur-seal pups on Montague Island. An A. forsteri pup born there in the 1999/2000 summer survived for at least 4 months. Nevertheless, the island should be considered as supporting haul-out sites rather than breeding sites. A Subantarctic fur-seal A. tropicalis and an Australian sea-lion Neophoca cinerea were also recorded during the study. Seven juvenile A. p. doriferus were observed ashore with manmade debris (straps or portions of a trawl net) around their necks. Fur-seals at Montague Island generate interest because of tourism and interactions with local fisheries. Trends in their abundance should be monitored annually in March, for which there is a long-term data set, and in October, when they are most abundant.

Abstract:
In a well-known paper, John Doris argues that situationist psychology impugns Aristotelian virtue ethics, which presupposes the existence of stable, situation-independent virtues. Maria Merritt responds that a Humean conception of virtue, which is situation-dependent, is immune to this criticism. However, she does not directly address two of Doris’ more trenchant objections, which he presents in the form of a dilemma. In this paper, I respond to Doris’ dilemma, using recent research in psychology and cognitive science to show that virtue ethics, as a dispositionalist, non-codifiable theory, represents a more empirically adequate moral psychology than the leading alternatives.

Abstract:
Abstract. We present the first comparison of a new lidar technique to measure winds in the middle atmosphere, called DoRIS (Doppler Rayleigh Iodine Spectrometer), with a rocket-borne in situ method, which relies on measuring the horizontal drift of a target (“starute”) by a tracking radar. The launches took place from the Andøya Space Center (ASC), very close to the ALOMAR observatory (Arctic Lidar Observatory for Middle Atmosphere Research) at 69° N. DoRIS is part of a steerable twin lidar system installed at ALOMAR. The observations were made simultaneously and with a horizontal distance between the two lidar beams and the starute trajectories of typically 0–40 km only. DoRIS measured winds from 14 March 2015, 17:00 UTC, to 15 March 2015, 11:30 UTC. A total of eight starute flights were launched successfully from 14 March, 19:00 UTC, to 15 March, 00:19 UTC. In general there is excellent agreement between DoRIS and the in situ measurements, considering the combined range of uncertainties. This concerns not only the general height structures of zonal and meridional winds and their temporal developments, but also some wavy structures. Considering the comparison between all starute flights and all DoRIS observations in a time period of ±20 min around each individual starute flight, we arrive at mean differences of typically ±5–10 m s−1 for both wind components. Part of the remaining differences are most likely due to the detection of different wave fronts of gravity waves. There is no systematic difference between DoRIS and the in situ observations above 30 km. Below ∼ 30 km, winds from DoRIS are systematically too large by up to 10–20 m s−1, which can be explained by the presence of aerosols. This is proven by deriving the backscatter ratios at two different wavelengths. These ratios are larger than unity, which is an indication of the presence of aerosols.

Abstract:
Doris verrucosa Linnaeus, 1758 is the type species of Doris, the type genus of Dorididae. Its currently accepted distribution includes the Mediterranean, Eastern (Europe and Africa) and Western Atlantic (Massachusetts, USA to Santa Catarina, Brazil). Until now, papers on the anatomy of this species dealt with restricted characters such as rhinophores, radula and reproductive organs, never comparing specimens from different localities. In this study we have examined the anatomy of species similar to D. verrucosa from the Brazilian coast, and compared them with samples of D. verrucosa from Europe, the type locality. After an extensive complementary anatomical study of the circulatory, excretory, digestive, reproductive and nervous systems, the identity of the Brazilian specimens is clarified, proving that they belong to a different species. To solve the consequent nomenclatural gap, we revalidate Staurodoris januarii Bergh, 1878, described from Brazil, transferred to the genus Doris. The nominal species Doris verrucosa is, therefore, restricted to European waters.

Abstract:
The 2007 Nobel literature laureate Doris Lessing (1919-2013) is one of the twentieth century’s most prolific and versatile British writers. Her literary career is marked by the robustness and diversity of her ideas. The plurality of voices in her work makes room for discovering a very different Lessing from how she is usually construed and for discussing some of her views in a new and somewhat unusual light. In this study, I intend to look at her thoughts on education, literature, racism, and women’s rights and locate possible commonalities between them and certain facets of Islamic thought. As she is considered a humanist, a secular writer of great stature, the “grande dame” of British writing of her time, and handlesexplicit sexual relationships, a sense of remoteness and incomprehension is perhaps palpable in any attempt to discover an “Islamic Doris Lessing.” However, given that she is known for her courage and outspokenness, as well as for making unconventional moves and iconoclastic statements sometimes at the expense of her literary reputation, it will be interesting to see her ideas from an Islamic perspective.
