Abstract:
Numerous experiments have been carried out to validate the Lorentz transformation or to find possible violations of Lorentz invariance, based on test theories to test special relativity. The test theory of Mansouri and Sexl (MS) provides a general framework for the transformation of inertial frames, presuming a preferred system of reference. Based on the MS framework, this paper systematically approaches the relativistic Doppler effect such that its dependency on transformation coefficients and parameters can be investigated. The Doppler effect is formulated in a complex Euclidean space where time is represented with imaginary numbers. Two formulae of the Doppler effect, which have been derived in an arbitrary transformation within the MS framework, are presented: one between an inertial frame and the preferred one and the other between arbitrary inertial frames. It is shown from the former formulation that the Doppler effect is independent of the synchronization of clocks, which implies that the Doppler-shifted frequency in the absolute synchronization is the same as that in the standard synchronization. The latter formula can allow us to find Doppler shifts without information on the velocities of inertial frames relative to the preferred frame. Exploiting these theoretical results, we examine the transverse and the longitudinal Doppler effects in detail.

Abstract:
Shift-frequency jamming is generally used to form range false targets for ground-based early-warning radar systems; the frequency shift value of such interference is larger than the Doppler shift value of the moving target, and the key element to suppress the shift-frequency jamming is the frequency shift value estimation. However, in the low- or medium-pulse repetition frequency (PRF) mode, it is challenging to estimate the accurate frequency shift due to the velocity ambiguity. To solve this problem, a novel sparse Doppler-sensitive waveform is designed based on the ambiguity function theory, where the basic idea is to design a waveform sensitive to a specific Doppler but insensitive to other Dopplers; therefore, this waveform can recognize the specific Doppler of the target unambiguously. To apply the designed waveform in practice, the detection and estimation processing flow is provided based on the waveform diversity technique and the family of the sparse Doppler-sensitive waveforms. Simulation experiments are presented to validate the efficiency of the proposed method, and we conclude that the advantage of this method is that it can be used to confirm the specific Doppler of the target unambiguously with few pulses even under the condition of a low PRF.

Abstract:
Since 2015 Doppler-LIDAR measurements above Leipzig are available. The Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS) operates a HALO Photonics Streamline Doppler-LIDAR while the Institute of Meteorology Leipzig uses a Leosphere Windcube 8 Doppler-LIDAR. In this study mainly meausrements of the Windcube for horizontal wind velocity, wind direction and turbulence intensity below 500 m are evaluated. The comparison to the HALO Photonics Streamline LIDAR shows good correlations between both devices. Among others, the results include good agreements with the Ekman theory. Additionally the increased roughness of the city surface compared to rural areas becomes apparent. A way to determine characteristic quantities like the turbulent diffusion coefficient and the aerodynamic roughness length is described and initial estimations were conducted. This study suggests to continue and if possible expand such remote sensing measurements for analyses of urban boundary layer dynamics.

Valley, John Francis. "Nonlinear optical experiments in sodium vapor and comparison with Doppler-broadened two-level-atom theory." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/184930.

Full text
Abstract:
Two spectral regions of gain exist for a weak probe beam propagating through a medium of two-level-atoms pumped by a strong near-resonance field. Experimentally a cw ring-dye laser is used to explore this gain at the Na D₂ resonance in a vapor. Plane-wave calculations of probe-gain spectra which include the Doppler broadening inherent in a vapor agree well with experimental spectra obtained with a Fabry-Perot interferometer. Such two-beam-coupling gain might have applications as optical pre- or power amplifiers. The gain is also the primary step in four-wave-mixing. Mixing of the pump and sideband which experiences gain produces the medium polarization from which the fourth-wave arises. For phase-matched propagation the fourth-wave, which is at a frequency that experiences little or negative probe-gain (i.e., absorption), grows at nearly the same rate as the primary sideband. Together the two sidebands extract far more than twice as much energy from the pump than does the primary sideband acting alone. Experimentally four-wave-mixing which arises from noise at the gain-sideband-frequency is sometimes accompanied by conical emission at the fourth-wave sideband. Since this sideband is also seen on axis the explanation cannot be simply phase-matching. Simulations which include the full transverse nature of the experiment are currently running on a CRAY supercomputer. These simulations indicate that the radial variation of the medium index of refraction is responsible for conical emission.

Abstract:
CeiKNSBN is a new photorefractive material in the KNSBN family, which has some advantages compared to other crystals. Based on two-wave mixing theory, different methods are used to investigate the photorefractvie properties of the Ce:KNSBN crystal. Most parameters of the CeiKNSBN crystal are in the same orders with those of Cu:KNSBN crystal. The diffraction efficiency from the CeiKNSBN crystal is affected by the applied electric field. The applied field increases the response rate of the grating formation and enhances the diffraction efficiency. There exists an optimum applied field and grating spacing related to the maximum diffraction efficiency, and the history of applied field influences the value of diffraction efficiency. Fanning loss and thermal effects should be considered in the diffraction theory for the CeiKNSBN crystal. The phase conjugate properties of the CeiKNSBN crystal are demonstrated in the four-wave mixing configuration and in the SPPC CAT conjugator. The experimental results agree with the analytical solution under some conditions. The He-Ne laser generates higher SPPC in the CeiKNSBN crystal than that by the argon-ion laser. The Doppler frequency detuning technique is first, to our knowledge, applied in the SPPC CAT configuration. The SPPC reflectivity is enhanced and the uniformity of the reflectivity is improved by this technique.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This chapter covers the basic science of physics relevant to anaesthetic practice. Equipment and measurement devices are covered elsewhere. Starting with fundamentals, atomic structure is introduced, followed by dimensions and units as used in science. Basic mechanics are then discussed, focusing on mass and density, force, pressure, energy, and power. The concept of linearity, hysteresis, and frequency response in physical systems is then introduced, using relevant examples, which are easy to understand. Laminar and turbulent fluid flow is then described, using flow measurement devices as applications of this theory. The concept of pressure and its measurement is then discussed in some detail, including partial pressure. Starting with the kinetic theory of gases, heat and temperature are described, along with the gas laws, critical temperature, sublimation, latent heat, vapour pressure and vaporization illustrated by the function of anaesthetic vaporizers, humidity, solubility, diffusion, osmosis, and osmotic pressure. Ultrasound and its medical applications are discussed in some detail, including Doppler and its use to measure flow. This is followed by an introduction to lasers and their medical uses. The final subject covered is electricity, starting with concepts of charge and current, voltage, energy, and power, and the role of magnetism. This is followed by a discussion of electrical circuits and the rules governing them, and bridge circuits used in measurement. The function of capacitors and inductors is then introduced, and alternating current and transformers are described.

Abstract:
Echocardiography is the cornerstone for the diagnosis of pericardial disease. It is a portable technique allowing morphological and functional multimodality (M-mode, two-dimensional, Doppler, and tissue Doppler) imaging of pericardial disease. In addition, echocardiography is essential for differential diagnosis (pericardial effusion vs pleural effusion, constrictive pericarditis vs restrictive cardiomyopathy) and allows bedside guiding of pericardiocentesis. This chapter describes normal pericardial anatomy and reviews echocardiographic features of different pericardial diseases and their pathophysiology, including pericarditis, pericardial effusion, constrictive pericarditis, pericardial cyst, and congenital absence of pericardium.

Abstract:
Evaluation of diastolic function by echocardiography is useful to diagnose heart failure with preserved ejection fraction by showing signs of diastolic dysfunction, and regardless of ejection fraction, echocardiography can be used to estimate left ventricular (LV) filling pressure. Diastolic dysfunction occurs in a number of cardiac diseases other than heart failure and mild diastolic dysfunction is part of the normal ageing process. The fundamental disturbances in diastolic dysfunction are slowing of myocardial relaxation, loss of restoring forces, and reduced LV chamber compliance. As a compensatory response there is elevated LV filling pressure. Slowing of relaxation and loss of restoring forces are reflected in reduction in LV early diastolic lengthening velocity (e?) by tissue Doppler. The reduced diastolic compliance is reflected in faster deceleration of early diastolic transmitral velocity by pulsed wave Doppler. Elevated LV filling pressure is reflected in a number of Doppler indices and in enlarged left atrium. This chapter reviews the physiology of diastolic function, the clinical methods and indices which are available, and how these should be applied.

Abstract:
Assessment of right ventricular (RV) size, function, and haemodynamics has been challenging because of its unique cavity geometry. Conventional two-dimensional assessment of RV function is often qualitative. Doppler methods involving tricuspid inflow and pulmonary artery flow velocities, which are influenced by changes in pre- and afterload conditions, may not provide robust prognostic information for clinical decision making. Recent advances in echocardiographic assessment of the RV include tissue Doppler imaging, speckle-tracking imaging, and volumetric three-dimensional imaging, but they need specific training, expensive dedicated equipment, and extensive clinical validation. However, assessment of RV function is crucial, especially in patients with signs of right-sided failure and those with congenital or mitral valve diseases. This chapter aims to address the role of the various echocardiographic modalities used to assess RV and pulmonary vascular bed function. Special emphasis has been placed on technical considerations, limitations, and pitfalls of image acquisition and analysis.

Abstract:
AbstractIn this chapter, we coin a complex thermal conductivity whose imaginary part corresponds to the real part of a complex refractive index. Therefore, the thermal counterpart of a negative refractive index is just a negative imaginary thermal conductivity, featuring the opposite directions of energy flow and wave vector in thermal conduction and advection, thus called negative thermal transport herein. We design an open system with energy exchange and explore three different cases to reveal negative thermal transport to avoid violating causality. We further provide experimental suggestions with a solid ring structure. All finite-element simulations agree with the theoretical analyses, indicating that negative thermal transport is physically feasible. These results have potential applications such as designing the inverse Doppler effect in thermal conduction and advection.

Abstract:
Reference 1 derives the two-photon probe-absorption coefficient for a homogeneously broadened medium subjected to an arbitrarily intense saturator wave. We have generalized this theory to allow for Doppler broadening with a counterrunning probe and saturator waves. We have carried out integrals over a Lorentzian Doppler distribution analytically and have specialized to a number of limits, such as extreme Doppler broadening. In this limit, we find the simple probe absorption coefficient α 1 ≃ 2 α 0 ( γ D 1 I 2 − i ω s T 1 ) , where α0 is the unsaturated two-photon absorption coefficient, I2 is the saturator intensity, γ is the two-photon coherence decay rate constant, ω s is the Stark shift parameter, T1 is the population difference decay time, and D 1 = 1 / [ γ+ i ( ω+ω s I 2 − ν 2 − ν 1 ) ] . For vanishing Stark shifts (ω s = 0), this is the standard two-photon probe absorption coefficient, but for large ω s , the complex Lorentzian D 1 becomes detuned. In the homogeneously broadened limit, the absorption spectrum resembles the one-photon case. In this paper we show the transition between these two limits.

Abstract:
In the frame of automotive Noise Vibration and Harshness (NVH) evaluation, inner cabin noise is among the most important indicators. The main noise contributors can be identified in engine, suspensions, tires, powertrain, brake system, etc. With the advent of E-vehicles and the consequent absence of the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), tire/road noise has gained more importance, particularly at mid-speed driving and in the spectrum up to 300 Hz. At the state of the art, the identification and characterization of Noise and Vibration sources rely on pointwise sensors (microphones, accelerometers, strain gauges). Optical methods such as Digital Image Correlation (DIC) and Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV) have recently received special attention in the NVH field because they can be used to obtain full-field measurements. Moreover, these same techniques could also allow to characterize the tire behavior in operating conditions, which would be practically impossible to derive with standard techniques. In this paper we will demonstrate how non-contact full-field measurement techniques can be used to reliably and robustly characterize the tire behavior up to 300 Hz, focusing on static conditions. Experimental modal analysis will extract the modal characteristic of the tire in both free-free and statically preloaded boundary conditions, using both DIC and LDV. The extracted natural frequencies, damping ratios and full-field mode shapes will be used on one side to improve the accuracy of tire models (either by deriving FRF based models or updating FE ones) but also as a reference for future investigation on the tire behavior characterization in rotating conditions.
