Abstract:
The inclusion of orange pulp (OP) in pig diets may promote the circular economy, but drying procedures might influence its nutritional value and environmental impact. The purpose of this study was to determine the energy value and nutrient digestibility of dehydrated (DOP) and ensiled sun dried (ESDOP) orange pulp. The potential ammonia (NH3) and methane (CH4) emissions derived from slurry were also measured. Digestible energies of 14.2 and 13.2 MJ/kg DM for DOP and ESDOP, respectively, were estimated by difference after a 500 g/kg substitution of a basal diet with OPs. A high fiber digestion efficiency was observed for both OPs. Pigs fed the basal diet showed a higher intake and a greater excretion of urine N than pigs fed with OP, but fecal N excretion did not differ among diets. A higher benzoic and hippuric acid content in urine was observed in OP than in basal diet. Altogether, these findings explained a lower pH in slurry of OP diets and a reduction of potential NH3 emissions. The biochemical CH4 potential also decreased, especially with ESDOP. Overall, both OP are relevant sources of energy for pig diets. Their inclusion in feeds generate favorable changes of slurry characteristics that reduce potential NH3 and CH4 emissions.

Abstract:
The building sector is one of the most critical branches of the economy influencing global warming today. Following the European Union’s Construction Products Regulation (CPR), the sustainable use of natural resources in construction is one of the seven basic buildings’ requirements. However, due to the lack of provisions in this regard, construction products are not yet subject to mandatory assessment and verification of the constancy of performance in this area. The paper presents the research results with the participation of 842 respondents who are investors, architects, contractors, and sellers of building materials. The analysis of their perceptions of issues related to the term sustainable development and knowledge of selected documents functioning in construction is presented. The share of people who correctly assigned the term sustainable development to equal treatment of environmental protection, economic development, and social development ranged between 52.5% and 65.7%. Knowledge of people associated with construction about the role of the declaration of performance (DoP) of construction products is high (from 73.9% to 99.4% correct answers). For Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), lower knowledge of this document’s role was noted, from 24.1% to 56.5% of correct answers. The obtained results indicate the need for further education.

Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this work is to explore electrical properties of an electrochemical sensor designed for the detection of malachite green (MG) present in an aqueous solution.Design/methodology/approachThe present sensor consists in the spatial coupling of a polymeric membrane and an ion-sensitive electrode (platinum electrode). The preparation of the polymeric membrane involves the incorporation of an ionophore (D2HPA), a polymer (polyvinylchloride [PVC]) and a plasticizer (dioctyl phthalate [DOP]). Several techniques have been used to characterize this sensor: the cyclic voltammetry, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and the optical microscopy. The sensibility, the selectivity and the kinetic study of a modified platinum electrode have been evaluated by cyclic voltammetry.FindingsThe obtained results reveal the possibility of a linear relationship between the current of reduction peaks and MG concentration. A linear response was obtained in a wide-concentration range that stretches from 10−5to 10−13mol L−1, with a good correlation coefficient (0.976) and a good detection limit of 5.74 × 10−14mol L−1(a signal-to-noise ratio of 3). In addition, the voltammetric response of modified electrode can be enhanced by adding a layer of Nafion membrane. Under this optimal condition, a linear relationship was obtained, with a correlation coefficient of 0.986 and a detection limit of 1.92 × 10−18mol L−1.Originality/valueIn the present research, a convenient, inexpensive and reproducible method for the detection of MG was developed. The developed sensor is capable of competing against the conventional techniques in terms of speed, stability and economy.

Abstract:
Understanding the distribution and transportation of phosphorus is vital for the sustainable development of aquatic environmental protection and ecological security. The spatial–temporal distribution of phosphorus fractions in water–sediment phases in river systems and their relationships remain unclear in Southwest China. In this study, the spatial and temporal distribution of phosphorus fractions in water–sediment phases in the Tuojiang River, a primary tributary of the Yangtze River which plays important roles in the economy and ecology of the region, and the relationships among the different phosphorus fractions were analyzed. These fractions were soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP), and total particulate phosphorus (PP) fractions in water, and exchangeable phosphorus (Ex-P), organic phosphorus (Or-P), phosphorus bound by Fe oxides (Fe-P), authigenic phosphorus (Ca-P), detrital phosphorus (De-P), and refractory phosphorus (Res-P) fractions in sediment. The SPR and Fe-P were the dominant phosphorus fractions in the water and sediment, respectively. The TP content was greater in the lower reaches than in the middle and upper reaches. The average abundances of most phosphorus fractions in water–sediment phases showed significant seasonal variations. The Fe-P, Org-P, and TP in sediments were released to the water interface, resulting in the increase of phosphorus in the overlying water. Redundancy analysis (RDA) indicated that the physicochemical properties of water and sediment have a certain influence on the spatial–temporal distribution of the phosphorus fractions. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that the main phosphorus source was anthropogenic activities. These results provide primary data regarding phosphorus fractions and contribute to understanding phosphorus cycling and controlling phosphorus pollution in the Tuojiang River.

Abstract:
Background and Aim: Milk yield (MY) is one of the main factors that affect the economic profitability of dairy farms. Thus, increasing the MY per animal and decreasing the feed cost can lead to economic gains, so the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of dry period length (DPL), days open (DO), and days in milk (DIM) on the productivity and profitability of dairy cow farms. Materials and Methods: Data used in this study were taken from 3095 lactation records of Friesian dairy cows of private and governmental sectors. The data were classified into 4 DPL categories: DPL1 <45 days; DPL2 45-60 days; DPL3 61-75 days, and DPL4 >75 days, 3 DO categories: DO1 ≤90 days; DO2 91-110 days and DO3 >111 days, and 8 DIM categories: DIM1 180-210 days; DIM2 211-240 days; DIM3 241-270 days; DIM4 271-300 days; DIM5 301-330 days; DIM6 331-360 days; DIM7 361-447 days; and DIM8 >447 days. Results: The average net profit (NP) was significantly different (p<0.05) among different categories of DPL, DO, and DIM in both production sectors, where high estimates of NP were calculated for DPL3 (30667.3 EGP), and it was the lowest for DPL1 (19690.6 EGP). DO2 had the highest NP (30754.1 EGP), while DO3 had the lowest NP (24875.5 EGP). DIM3 had the highest NP (29569.3 EGP), while DIM8 had the lowest NP (19528.4 EGP). Conclusion: Finally, we can conclude that DPL 61-75 days, DO 91-110 days, and DIM 241-270 days had the highest level of total MY, total return, and NP. Private dairy cow farms achieve a higher level of NP than governmental ones under subtropical Egyptian conditions.

Abstract:
Single-drop microextraction (SDME) coupled to capillary gas chromatography (GC) was established for the determination of four phthalate esters in wastewater, including dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), di-n-octyl phthalate (DnOP) and butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP). The SDME parameters such as extractants, extracting time, stirring rate and immerging depth of needle point were studyed and optimized. The abovementioned phthalate esters were quantified by external standardization method using GC coupled with a flame ionization detector (FID). The linear regression calibration curves, detection limits (S/N=3) and the linear ranges of the method for determining each phthalate were determined, respectively. The concentrations of components abovementioned in a real wastewater sample, the average of the recoveries obtained in the spiked wastewater samples and the corresponding relative standard deviations were determined, respectively. The results showed the proposed method several attributes, friendly enviroment, economic and highly efficient pretreatment, less time, simplicity, sensitivity, accuracy and wide linear range and so on.

Abstract:
Abstract An industry survey representing approximately 310 million (M) market weight pigs was conducted with 20 U.S. slaughter facilities over the calendars years of 2012 to 2015 to determine the incidence, seasonal patterns, and estimated economic impact of dead and non-ambulatory pigs. Each plant entered daily totals in a secure online database for the following variables: 1) pigs slaughtered, 2) dead on arrival (DOA; dead on the truck), 3) euthanized on arrival (EOA; non-ambulatory pig with an injury that required euthanasia), 4) dead in pen (DIP; died after unloading), and 5) non-ambulatory (pig unable to move or keep up with the rest of the group from unloading to stunning). Total dead pigs were calculated as DOA + EOA + DIP, and total losses were calculated as non-ambulatory + total dead. The economic impact was estimated based on the 4-yr weighted averages from USDA annual reports for market swine slaughtered (108,470,550 pigs), live market weight (126.9 kg), and live market price ($1.44/kg). The 4-yr weighted averages for total dead, non-ambulatory, and total losses were 0.26%, 0.63%, and 0.88%, respectively. Total dead consisted of 0.15% DOA, 0.05% EOA, and 0.05% DIP. The months with the highest rates of total dead were July (0.29%), August (0.32%), and September (0.30%), while the lowest incidence rates occurred in February (0.22%), March (0.22%), and April (0.22%). The months with the highest rates of non-ambulatory pigs were observed during the months of October (0.70%), November (0.71%), and December (0.70%), whereas the lowest rates of non-ambulatory pigs were observed during the months of April (0.57%), May (0.53%), and June (0.54%). The following assumptions were used in the economic analysis: 1) dead pigs received no value and 2) non-ambulatory pigs were discounted 30%. Based on these assumptions, the annual cost to the industry for dead and non-ambulatory pigs was estimated to be $52 M ($0.48 per pig marketed) and $37 M ($0.35 per pig marketed), respectively. Therefore, total losses represent approximately $89 M in economic losses or $0.83 per pig marketed. This is the first industry-wide survey on the incidence of transport losses in market weight pigs at U.S. slaughter facilities, and this information is important for establishing an industry baseline and benchmark for transport losses that can be used for measuring industry improvements.

Abstract:
The Taiwanese government forecasted economic growth to dip from 10.7% in 2010 to about four per cent in 2011 and 3.9% in 2012. Reasons for the dip were the earthquake on 11 March 2011 in Japan and the weak demand from Europe and US markets, a situation which is expected to affect the Taiwan economy in 2012. Nonetheless, cross-strait economic relations are likely to progress further after Kuomintang's victory in the 2012 presidential election.

Abstract:
The present study aims to know the profile, habits and attitudes of the consumers of Mirandesa DOP meat, in order to better understand the needs, preferences and habits of the same consumers. With this investigation we will be able to calculate the influence level of some characteristics, namely the personal, social, geographical and economic ones, in the purchase options of this product, as well as check if there is a difference in the attitudes and behaviours among groups on what concerns the consumption of that product. The investigation was based on a survey (165 questionnaires) applied to the consumers of Mirandesa DOP meat in different commercial areas (Bragança, Chaves, Porto) from February 2009 to November 2009. Sixty five per cent of the questioned were between 49 and 79 years old, 29% finished secondary education and 20% enjoy a reasonable income (average monthly income of the household between 1350 to 1800 euros). Among the surveyed households (minimum 1 person to a maximum of 6) the purchase and preparation of food supplies is mostly assumed by the woman who usually purchases the meat on a weekly basis. Among the questioned, 69% go to a restaurant between once to thrice a month, while 61% of those choose eateries where Mirandesa meat is served. The three main highlights of this type of meat are its tenderness (28%), juice (23%) and flavor (21%). For the surveyed the average price difference between this type of meat and conventional beef, is between 2 to 45 euros and their willingness to purchase Mirandesa meat pre-cooked products is 53%.

Abstract:
One of the most important economic sardinian realities is the production of Pecorino Romano PDO. The context in which it was born and developed incorporates many of the pre-conditions that may contribute to the existence of a district. The main objective of this study is to determine whether the Sardinian dairy industry, focused on the production of Pecorino Romano PDO, may create a district effect. It might suggest the existence of the same district even if atypical. To test this hypothesis, first it was examined the production efficiency of the processing enterprises of Pecorino Romano using the method of stochastic frontier production. Next, we focused on identifying the causes of any differences. The study shows that the efficiency levels observed are almost entirely attributable to production inputs used, particularly milk. It is abundantly clear that the cooperative system works and that these companies get systematically efficiency margins better than the non-cooperative. The variables analyzed do not allow to conclude that there is a "district effect".

Abstract:
Any food product found on the market contains several labels that help consumers in their decision making when shopping. This help can be guaranteed only if the consumers understand the significance of those labels, the differences between them and the information that they certify. The thesis explored labels’ role in the food marketing sector and studies were carried out according to consumer approach. Using different methods (statistics and econometrics), we analyzed consumers perceptions, awareness, knowledge towards some food labels and their preferences and behavior toward food products bearing these labels (Front of Packaging Nutritional Labels and Quality labels). Quality certified food products were chosen because are dramatically relevant for the European agri-food sector, even more of the Italian one where it forms the DOP Economy, due to its density. Assessments of several food labels from a consumer behavior perspective was carried out. Based on the findings we formulated some policy, marketing recommendations and communication suggestions that could be used by the consortia to enhance consumers’ engagement for products with quality certifications (PDO/PG/TSG or organic). The recommendations were also addressed to policy makers and producers of the PDO/PGI/TSG/Organic products but also to the policy makers of the Nutritional Labelling.

Abstract:
Enquanto a velocidade de crescimento absoluta foi inferior na fase de transição (entre as outras fases), a eficiência alimentar e o custo de produção de um quilograma de peso vivo foram melhores na fase de recria; Comparison of three diets in the production of Vitelão Mertolengo DOP Abstract: The high feed costs in growing-finishing of beef cattle, demand the adoption of strategies to improve the zootechnical and economic efficiency of the process, as it was pretended in the production of the Vitelão Mertolengo DOP. In the present dissertation were studied the parameters related with the productive performance, with the carcass characteristics and with the beef quality in Mertolenga cattle breed submitted to three diets, that witch basically differed in concentrated feed available in the finishing phase and in change of concentrated between the two phases. In terms of productive performance, the main zootechnical and economic parameters evaluated conducted to obtain identical results for the diets, but determined differences between phases. While the absolute growth rate was lower in the transition phase (between the other phases), the feed efficiency and cost of production of one kilogram of live weight were better in the growing phase.

Grana Padano cheese is one of the most important Italian product with a denomination of origin (PDO) and it has a great relevance on the national dairy sector: about a quarter of the total amount of milk produced in Italy is used to obtain Grana Padano PDO cheese. This product has a widespread consumption both in Italy and worldwide. The degree of penetration in households’ consumption is very high: more than 90% of Italian households regularly consume Grana Padano PDO cheese. For the above reason, Grana Padano is a very peculiar PDO products and it can be considered as a mass market good rather than niche one. In fact, as most basic food products, it reaches final consumers mainly through super and ipermarkets, rather than through specialised channels. The aim of the current study is to explore the relationships between producers/ripeners and retailers of Grana Padano PDO cheese in a context of supply network (Harland, 1996) rather than supply chain, trying to fill out a lack found in this research topic. Social network analysis will be used to measure social capital correlated with actors that make up the network considered and finally to test the hypothesis that social capital is correlated to economic performance of firms involved in Grana Padano PDO supply network

Abstract:

Siettou, Christina. "An economic analysis of the UK pet dog market and animal welfare : the case of the UK pet dog overpopulation problem." Thesis, University of Kent, 2015. https://kar.kent.ac.uk/47904/.

Full text
Abstract:
Pets are an important part of our society as they have become ‘part of the family’. However, one of the most important problems regarding the pet dog population is the great number of strays and their management. The annual stray survey conducted on behalf of Dogs Trust, one of the leading dog welfare organizations in the UK, has revealed that each year there are more than 100,000 stray dogs in the UK. To date, their management remains a problem only addressed by Local Authorities. This thesis’ objectiveis to undertake an economic analysis of the pet dog overpopulation problem in the United Kingdom. It aims to further the existing literature on the pet dog overpopulation problem in the UK and to become a stepping stone on which further research could be based. Given the limited data available, primary data was collected to investigate the following areas: The fate of stray dogs that entered an animal welfare organization for rehoming; the current Local Authority management of stray dogs; and lastly, people’s attitude towards the issue of stray and unwanted dogs and their willingness to pay to provide a humane management. The methodologies used in pursuing these investigations included advanced econometric models such as the Logistic Regression Model with Multiple Imputation, and the Multinomial Logistic Regression Model and its extensions (i.e. the Latent Class Model). In addition, in order to elicit people’s willingness to pay, the survey based technique of the Choice Experiment Method was employed. The survey revealed that people are willing to pay both under a voluntary regime and a mandatory regime. The estimated amount was in the range of £2 to £12. This range concurs with the range of donations that animal welfare organisations are advertising in order to raise funds. This study is the first in the UK literature to conduct an economic examination of the pet dog overpopulation problem. The outcomes derived could be viewed as an initial examination of the UK stray dog population management on which further research could be based.

Abstract:
The inhibitory effect of the hydrophobic layer on the surface of copper in an acidic medium was studied by the classical potentiodynamic method and the impedance spectroscopy method. The hydrophobic character of the copper surface was achieved by immersing the sample in ethanolic octadecanoic acid with and without the addition of dog rose oil extract. The selected concentrations of the added dog rose oil extract were 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 wt% in 0.05 molL-1 alcoholic solution of octadecanoic acid. Based on electrochemical measurements, an inhibition effect of ≈ 65% was obtained when the surface was modified by immersion in ethanolic octadecanoic acid only. With the addition of dog rose oil extract, this value increased to over 90%, depending on the concentration of dog rose oil extract added.

Abstract:
AbstractThe urgency for developing a circular economy is growing, and more and more companies and organisations are concerned with the importance of adapting their business to fit a changing economy. However, many analyses on the circular economy are still rather abstract and there is a lack of understanding about what circularity would mean for specific industries. This insufficient insight especially seems to be apparent in the building and construction sector. Besides, the building and construction sector is responsible for a major part of energy use and emissions. To tackle the issue of insufficient insight into the business consequences of circular devlopments, further research is necessary. Therefore, we propose to collaborate on a research project that aims to provide a more detailed level of analysis. The goal is to identify drivers and barriers to make better use of materials in the building and construction sector. This further research would benefit from an international collaboration between universities of applied sciences and industry from different European countries. An additional benefit of the applied orientation would be the relevance for professional education programmes. References CBS, PBL & Wageningen UR. (2017). Abstract:
Gold prices have been one of the most observed financial indicators in the global economy. Various macro dynamics that historically determine the price of gold, as a precious metal have been initiated. In this scope, gold price fluctuations are closely linked to the global economic conjuncture. In this study, the role of gold in the global economy and historical gold prices are examined briefly, and in the course of global finance crisis, the elements Dow- Jones Index, petrol prices and silver prices as assigning gold prices are dealt with. An economic and econometric analysis is carried out for these indicators since it is regarded that they are crucially instrumental in gold prices. Study period is determined monthly and covers between 2007:01 and 2013:02. Johansen co-integration test, VECM and impulse response analyses are used in the econometric analysis. According to VECM analysis, it has been found out that the indicators do not act in unison in the short term, but the results of co-integration analysis reveal that gold prices are associated with the related economic indicators in the long term. As a result of impulse response analysis, it is seen that gold prices are more influenced by the fluctuations in petrol prices than other indicators. Within the frame of findings, it has been revealed that gold prices unsurprisingly increase during the crisis periods and are influenced by the indicators stated above.

The undulating nature of the development of enviromentary issues in the global context in the last 50 years is shown, due to the inclusion of large-scale innovative technologies (nuclear energy, rocket and space technology, a sharp increase in the scale of resource production activities, etc.) in the natural transformation activities of man. On the other hand, the global reinsertion of centres of military-political and economic activity (global socio-economic and political "utility") has a significant impact. The glocal and enviromental problems of the Don region, caused in the last 30 years by changes in the social, political and economic system of the country and the increase of glocal scale of transport, logistics, recreational, agricultural (defense) activities in the border zones of the South of Russia and its entrance corridors (Don region), were analyzed.

Abstract:
Economic reasons are among the basic explanatory factors of migration, whether international or internally within a country. In turn, migratory movements have effects on the economy in terms of economic growth in general, but also in the different markets (work, housing, consumer goods, etc.) and public services (education, health, social services, etc.). The purpose of this document is to offer an overview of these interactions between migration and the economy in the case of the Canary Islands. To do this, certain conceptual clarifications will be made initially involving the mutual determination of both processes, before later providing specifics with evidence on the Canarian case for the main issues considered: the economic reasons for migration, and its impact on economic growth, the labour market and the living conditions of the immigrant population. The final section alludes to the importance of the institutional framework that regulates these relations between migration and the economy, which are far from being interpretable as a mechanical relationship and isolated from the political sphere.

Abstract:
Large development intervention programmes termed ‘marine economy’ or ‘blue economy’ are in their early stages and do not yet have results on effectiveness. Reports on the effectiveness of activities which could be considered under the blue economy umbrella were identified although more general reports of success than specific evidence. The World Bank programme, Problue, is a multi-donor trust fund aiming to achieve sustainable economic development in healthy oceans. The latest annual review of the programme lists achievements in terms of number of activities, proposals accepted, and beneficiaries. Effectiveness outcomes were not yet available. Progress has been made in developing frameworks and tools to assist governments to develop roadmaps. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is undertaking a large number of activities in support of sustainable ocean economies which are also in early stages.
