Abstract:
The main topics of this master's project are non-linear ltering techniques, system identication, and supervised classication. The main goal is to develop, implement, and test methods using inertial sensors to monitor doorandwindow movement. Secondly, it aims to investigate if it is possible tomonitor door movements by using event classication. The thesis beginswith an overview of the available sensors and a theoretical part, in which theltering algorithms and the modelling of door- and window movements aresummarized. Later a supervised learning algorithm is developed. Lastly, thehardware used to test the algorithm and the results from the tests are shown. The goal of the project is to develop ltering techniques using accelerometers, gyroscopes, and magnetometers. They measure various inertial units of amoving body. By combining measurements from dierent sensors and fusingthem, the movement of a body can be tracked. Door- and window movementare modelled and the Kalman lter is used to estimate the true parameters ofthe model. Due to the imperfections of the sensors, properties such as osetand drift are included in the models. The models are to be used in doorsand windows to track the angle of which they are open. Due to dicultiesof tracking the movement when they hit the door- or window frame, theK-Nearest Neighbours classication algorithm is used to predict whether thedoor- or window closes fully.A general method of implementing the ltering techniques is constructed.Due to limitations in computational power, limited sampling rate of thesensors, and the nonlinear nature of the movement, some generalizations arerequired. Hardware which can be placed on doors and windows are used toverify the models. As a rst verication, the models and ltering techniqueswere tested in Matlab. Secondly, the algorithms were tested live on doorsand windows. The result shows it is possible to track the movement of doorsand windows with an accuracy of over 10. The classication algorithmshows some success with tracking a closing door but requires more work tobecome more accurate. The result also shows that the sampling rate has tobe taken into consideration when designing the algorithms, a higher samplingrate results in more accurate tracking but increases power consumption andcomputing power.

Abstract:
Today’s construction buildings contain more advanced technologies than before. The development of newer and stricter regulations to the construction industry makes the door environment more and more complex. In large construction projects the door environment is held up as a major challenge to get to in a good way. It turned out after a discussion with one project manager and a site manager at NCC, that the door environment is difficult to get right in major construction projects and it often causes many error reports in to the aftermarket after that the final inspection is completed. Interviews have been done with key figures in the building process at NCC and Akademiska hus. A study on a university building for around 3500 students and with 300 workplaces was made. There were a lot of data with fault reports to the go trough to find fault report from doors and be analyzed and statistic. The results from the data collection showed that many fault messages on the doors in was caused by the door operator. And from the interviews the content was clear that the coordination has to be good to have a functioning and a good door environment. One part that can contribute to a better door environment is to plan space for possible door operator over the door. Another part is that the construction documents which production workers are working with, is to find a way to always have the latest documents in hand.

Abstract:
This study focuses on investigating if specific aspects in texture design, used in the 3D-Models implemented in 3D-digital games, can influence a player's action. The method used is a minor section of a game called a level being constructed for player testing. The level has 6 rooms each with 2 out of 6 different designs of doors. The player will choose one, and with an interview tell us why he or she picked that door. I found that the players choose logic, rather than discomfort, when choosing a door as the choice often was about where the door lead. As the test shows interesting results, it validated my hypthesis in terms of whether a design can affect the player’s choices.

You can see sliding doors everywhere, be it at the grocery store or the hospital. These doors are today mostly based on naive, motion sensing, and hence not very intelligent in deciding to open or not. I propose a solution by replacing the traditional sensor with the more sophisticated Microsoft Kinect depth mapping sensor allowing for skeletal tracking and feature extraction. I have applied hidden markov models to the behavioural features to understand the human intentions. Combined with a few simple rules, this solution proved to be accurate in 4 out of 5 times in understanding the user's intention in a controlled laboratory test.

Zhu, Qi. "Shi in Architecture: the Efficacy of Traditional Chinese Doors." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/27733.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation explores the concept of shi manifested in traditional Chinese architecture by examining the efficacy of the traditional Chinese house doors. Three connotations of the concept of shi derived from different philosophical schools of thought during the Warring States Period: the advantageous shi, the authoritative shi and the self-so-doing shi, are re-engaged as the theoretical framework for this study. The three categories of shi correspondingly shed light on the understanding of the craftiness in architectural constructions, the embodied cultural meanings in building elements and the aesthetics achieved by the artful arrangement of building elements. This study also further reveals the essential nature of shi as weak and amorphous in parallel with the weak ontology proposed by Gianni Vattimo. It is this weak and amorphous nature of shi that results in the complexity, diversity and richness of traditional Chinese house doors. This new perspective of examining architecture through the lens of shi also provides a way for looking at the future development of Chinese architecture beyond the limitations of internationalism yet within the realm of a critical local modernity.

Smith-Stewart, Bonnyeclaire. "Front Doors-Back Doors: The Hypocrisy of Mark Twain Towards His Servants." DigitalCommons@Robert W. Woodruff Library, Atlanta University Center, 2015. http://digitalcommons.auctr.edu/dissertations/2966.

Abstract:
This study is a historical examination of the attitude and behavior of Mark Twain (also known as Samuel Langhorne Clemens) in his relationship with his household servants during the Gilded Age (1870-1900) in Hartford, Connecticut. "Gilded Age" was coined by Twain in a satirical expose of the corrupt greed in business and politics. Twain suggested dishonesty was disguised beneath a thin golden veil of American propaganda. This period of self-elevation and lavish wealth was contrasted against a poor unskilled working class. Twain, who evolved from lower rungs of society to fortuned heights, makes an ideal study for hypocrisy. Serving as a symbol of the times, this investigation explores his ability to rise above or to succumb to the predisposed mentality of the day. Further, the same biases of class, race, and gender continue to be unresolved issues today in an inviolate hypocritical system of privilege, gilded by wording in a duplicitous Constitution.

Abstract:
In this project I have designed a model of features, human behavior and intentions. The model suggests a set of features that can be used to describe the interaction between a human being and an automated sliding door. The model also defines symbols representing value sets for the features. The symbols are then combined in order to describe different events, mapping features to intentions. This model provides a framework guiding the capturing process as well as the reasoning process.Further, I have designed a mechanism for capturing human movement and extracting the features as suggested by the model of features, human behavior and intentions. The solution components are based on research done within computer vision, where different tools and algorithms were reviewed and evaluated. Parts of the suggested solution are provided as software libraries, while others had to be implemented. The solution includes using an Xbox Kinect as a sensor device, and the OpenNI framework together with the middleware NITE for Human body tracking and skeletal joint extraction.A reasoning mechanism was designed, that utilizes the designed model in order to reach a conclusion about the intention of a human interacting with the door. Different reasoning techniques were reviewed in context of the sliding doors problem. Based on the review I suggest using rule-based reasoning. By using the events described in the model and by giving values to the different symbols I was able to form the rules for the reasoning process. The designed mechanisms were put together in an implementation in C/C++ comprising depth and RGB image capture, body tracking, user handling and feature extraction, rule-based reasoning and door control.A motorized sliding door was built, together with a door controller allowing a computer to interface with the door, giving open and close commands. Finally, the door was tested both through a live demo and a laboratory style, structured observation. The door proved a superior performance to the traditional sliding doors when it came to identifying negative intentions, thus reducing the number of false positives drastically. However, both false positives and false negatives occurred, leaving room for improved accuracy. With my solution I have managed to interpret the intention of a user interacting with an automated sliding door. I have lifted the reasoning process to a symbolic level, dealing with symbols and events easy to understand. Although the model is limited to a very specific domain, and the solution has got some limitations and weaknesses, this is a good starting point for further work.

Abstract:
My purpose in writing this collection of lyric essays is to examine my evolution during one decade, from age 19 to 29. Essential questions have guided me: What stimulated change? What formed my decisions? What predisposed me to my relationship with my partner? Why did I want to have a child? What kind of relationship do I have with my son? How did my relationship with my partner evolve? Why did we decide to leave Miami? Hopefully, I have given the reader a glimpse into my movement from self-centeredness to motherhood, from aloof adolescent to committed partner, from timid daughter to self-aware individual. The nature of my inquiry led me to confessional conclusions that clarified my reactive behavior or lack of initiative, which my initial memories of the same events often disguised. These confessions are sometimes as satisfying as the more celebratory moments themselves, because they challenge older notions of self and invite the possibility of change. Specific authors who have provided models of substance and style include, but are not limited to Annie Dillard, Maxine Hong Kingston, Sharon Olds, Michael Ondaatje, and Richard Rodriguez. I use lyrical techniques to translate my experiences into crafted prose. I incorporate recurring lines to create links between essays that stand alone, thereby forming a sequence. Some experiences are so personal and specific to me that using an adopted form, such as a repurposed fairy tale, a cento, and the inverted pyramid, has allowed me to create a measure of distance from the subject, which I found necessary for rendering it clearly. I allude to specific songs to help me establish exposition and lend tone and texture to my scenes. I chose to use the second person and direct my words to a specific audience, such as my mother, my partner, or my son, because at times it feels more authentic to let the reader listen to the way I speak to that person than to tell about the relationship. I also chose to capture the voices of certain people speaking directly to me in order to establish the most authentic speaker. My effort to answer essential questions sometimes conjured scenes from the distant past. I use line breaks to let the reader fill in the gaps or make the leap to explore connections across time. Juxtaposition and prolepsis link these tableaus so the reader can see my life and uncover the answers along with me.

Keene, Colton Levi. "Blast Performance of Hollow Metal Steel Doors." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/93762.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent terrorist attacks and accidental explosions have prompted increased interest in the blast resistant design of high-risk facilities, including government offices, private sector buildings, transportation terminals, sporting venues, and military facilities. Current blast resistant design standards prioritize the protection of the primary structural system, such as walls, columns, and beams, to prevent a disproportionate collapse of the entire structure. Secondary structural systems and non-structural components, such as blast resistant doors, are typically outside the focus of standard building design. Components such as blast resistant doors are designed and manufactured by private sector entities, and their details are confidential and considered proprietary business information. For this reason, scientific research on blast resistant doors is sparse and most test results are unavailable for public consumption. Nevertheless, the performance of blast doors is crucial to the survival of building occupants as they are relied upon to contain blast pressures and remain operable after a blast event to allow ingress/egress. These important roles highlight the critical need for further research and development to enhance the level of protection provided by components that are often not considered in any detail by protective design practice. This thesis presents a combined experimental and analytical research program intended to support the development of blast resistant hollow metal doors. A total of 18 static beam-assembly tests were conducted, which consisted of the flexural four-point bending of door segments, to inform on the performance characteristics of full-sized blast resistant doors. Six tests were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of three skin-core construction methodologies, which consisted of one epoxy and two weld attachment specifications, between door skins and their internal reinforcing structures. The remaining 12 tests were performed to evaluate the in-situ performance of hinge hardware typically installed on blast resistant door assemblies. The results of the skin-core construction tests demonstrated that closely spaced weld patterns would provide the best blast performance. The results of the hinge hardware tests demonstrated that hinges which provided a continuous load-path directly into the primary ii structural core elements of the door frame and door were ideal; furthermore, robust hinges with fully-welded or continuous knuckles were best suited for limiting undesirable deformations. A semi-empirical analytical methodology was developed to predict the global deformation response of full-sized hollow metal doors subjected to blast loading in the seated direction. The goal was to provide practicing engineers who are competent but non-expert users of high fidelity simulations with the flexibility to conduct in-house evaluation of the blast resistance of hollow metal doors without having to conduct live explosive or simulated blast tests. A finite element analysis was first performed to compute the door resistance function. Hollow metal door construction was idealized using a bulk material sandwiched between sheet metal skins and internally stiffened by stringers. The properties of the bulk material were calibrated such that the deformability of the idealized core reasonably approximated the global load-deformation behavior which occurs due to loss of composite action when welds fail. The resistance curves were then used in a singledegree-of-freedom dynamic analysis to predict the displacement response of the door subjected to blast loading. The proposed methodology was first validated against the static beam-assembly flexural tests. It was then extended to the case of a full-sized door subjected to shock tube blast testing using results published in the literature. The proposed methodology was found to reasonably approximate the out-of-plane load-deformation response of beam-assemblies and full-size doors, provided the bulk material properties of the idealized core are calibrated against experimental data. Finally, the new Virginia Tech Shock Tube Testing Facility was introduced. A description of the facility, including an overview of the shock tube's location, construction, main components, instrumentation, and key operating principles, were discussed. Operating guidelines and procedures were outlined to ensure safe, controlled, and repeated blast testing operations. A detailed calibration plan was proposed, and future work pertaining to the development of blast resistant hollow metal doors was presented.
Master of Science
Recent terrorist attacks and accidental explosions have motivated an increase in the demand for blast protection of critical infrastructure. Secondary components, such as doors, play a pivotal role in the protection of occupants as they ensure blast pressures are contained and ingress/egress is possible after a blast event. Experiments have been conducted to characterize the performance of several door construction methodologies (i.e., epoxy, reduced weld requirements) and the in-situ performance of hinge hardware through quasi-static testing of beams whose construction closely mimics that of a full-size door. Results of door construction testing indicated that, whenever possible, blast resistant doors should be constructed with full weld attachment (maximum specification with weld spaced every 3”) as these doors were found to provide the greatest resistance. Due to inconsistent and sudden failure mode, epoxy skin-core construction is not recommended for use in blast resistant doors at this time. Hinge testing determined that hinge mounting plates (which hinge hardware leaves are attached to) should be integrally connected to the frame and door internal reinforcing elements to provide adequate strength and that hinges with fully welded knuckles should be used for blast applications to limit deformation and facilitate post-blast operability. An ABAQUS finite element analysis methodology utilizing a “skins and stringers” approach to generate a beam-assembly model resulted in an adequate prediction of load deflection results recorded during beam-assembly testing after calibration of the model. An extension of this modeling approach was used to model full-size doors and adequately captured their dynamic performance when subjected to blast loading. Finally, preparation of the Virginia Tech Shock Tube Testing Facility, which is currently in progress, is summarized with regards to its calibration and the first round of testing which will focus on providing more data for comparison with the analysis methodology developed in this research.

Jia, Yan. "Imperial Doors of Assyria: Monumentality, Spatiality, and Rituality of the Neo-Assyrian Architectural Doors From Balawat." Thesis, Harvard University, 2015. http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:14226073.

Full text
Abstract:
The present dissertation, titled "Imperial Doors of Assyria," aims to examine the artistic form and cultural value of Neo-Assyrian architectural doors as highlighted by the three concepts of monumentality, spatiality, and rituality, using the three bronze-banded wooden doors from Balawat as a case study. Having introduced the materials and questions to be raised in this dissertation in the introductory Chapter I, Chapter II on the "monumentality" of the Balawat doors explores the commemorative value of the Balawat doors respectively through material, image and text. The scale and material was the "vehicle of conveyance" for monumentality. The commemorative value of the Balawat doors as Assyrian imperial monuments lies also in their ability to tell stories through historical narrative relief imagery on decorative bronze bands, and cuneiform texts accompanying the reliefs. Chapter III on "spatiality" engages with a spatial reading of the door-band programs, and argues for a "spatial schema" governing the historical narrative on both the closed and the open door. When closed, the program reflects a "center -- periphery" schema, implying a political order between the Assyrian king and his conquered lands; when open, it changes into an "inside -- outside" schema, indicating an ideological order between the god, the people, and the king in-between as an intermediary connecting the two. Either way, the "spatial schema" encapsulates the essence of a clearly Assyrian-oriented world order, with the king always at the center/inside as the maintainer of such order. Chapter IV on "rituality" examines how the monumental doors interacted with people, and how the monumental space was then transformed into a "ritual place." Owing to the architectural function and commemorative value of the Balawat doors, their "rituality" lies in both their constructive roles of ritual events enacted at the doors, and reflective roles of ritual activities depicted on the doors. These two aspects would have cooperated and interacted with each other, and constitute a self-referential system which then reinforces the effectiveness of the ritually-meaningful images on the door. The final Chapter V concludes by highlighting the case of the Balawat doors as an important disclosure of the rules that manifested the syntax of the artistic, architectural, and social expressions of imperial Assyria. As visual metaphors for the Assyrian proto-imperial system, the door-band decorative programs demonstrate the ambitious world view of an expanding territorial state, soon to become one of the strongest empires in the ancient world.

Abstract:

Within the telecommunication business there are a lot of different hardware designs made for outside locations. Many of these outdoor products contain sensitive electronic equipment and all of these designs must be able to function in extreme environments. They might be mounted on the ground, on a wall or on masts at varying altitudes. They need to be enclosed and protected against blizzards, moisture, sandstorms, earthquakes, dust and similar contaminations or nature phenomena in order to assure a reliable and proper function of the device.

To delimit this thesis the focus is completely set on outdoor enclosures with hinged doors. The sealing solution for the enclosure door is crucial because it is the weakest link in the environmental protection. The aim with this thesis is to find a robust yet versatile sealing solution for Ericsson outdoor cabinets.

The sealing solution does not only concern the gasket design, it is in fact the entire principle when it comes to seal the door. Interesting features are choice of locking system, the positions of the hinges and other details which might affect the sealing of the enclosure door.

The project includes the whole product development process from pre-study to concept development and evaluation of proposal design. The pre-study contain extensive literature research, benchmark and a state of the art investigation. A number of concepts are generated, screened, compared and ranked with systematic concept development methods. At last, one final concept is selected for further development. The chosen sealing solution is refined and a functional model is made. A simple prototype of the sealing solution is designed, manufactured and tested to validate the functionality of the concept.

An economical analysis is performed in order to approximate the manufacturing cost of the gasket proposed in the sealing solution and to compare the unit price for different batch sizes. The water intrusion test indicates that the solution seems promising and that the result is a simple and robust sealing solution that easily can be implemented on various enclosure types.

Southwell, Graham Clifton. "Bronze Southern Doors of the Mitchell Library, Sydney: A Hidden Artistic, Literary and Symbolic Treasure." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/19594.

Full text
Abstract:
The building of the major part of the Mitchell Library (1939 - 1942) resulted in four pairs of bronze entrance doors, three on the northern facade and one on the southern facade. The three pairs on the northern facade of the library are obvious to everyone entering the library from Shakespeare Place and are well documented. However very little has been written on the pair on the southern facade apart from brief mentions in two books of the State Library buildings, so few people know of their existence. Sadly the excellent bronze doors on the southern facade of the library cannot readily be opened and are largely hidden from view due to the 1987 construction of the Glass House skylight between the newly built main wing of the State Library of New South Wales and the Mitchell Library. These doors consist of six square panels featuring bas-reliefs of different early printers’ marks and two rectangular panels at the bottom with New South Wales wildflowers. Because the southern doors were constructed in 1942 as part of a building with neo-classical architecture they reflect the culture of the time and are an artistic, literary and cultural treasure of the State Library of New South Wales and are being neglected when they should be cherished. The three areas of research I have followed are the invention of printing in Europe including early printers’ marks, late 19th and early 20th century library building architecture, and bronze doors. These all intersect on the bronze southern doors of the Mitchell Library. I have followed the two main personalities in the production of these doors. Firstly the benefactor, Sir William Dixson, who donated money for the three northern doors in memory of David Scott Mitchell with sufficient residual funds for the southern doors. Secondly, 1 William Ifould, Principal Librarian of the Public Library of New South Wales 1912 - 1942, who was the driving force behind the construction of the main part of Mitchell Library during changing times with conflict between traditionalism and modernism. He was a confirmed traditionalist who selected the artists and images for all the bronze doors and personally designed the southern doors. In my conclusion I offer a resolution to the problem viewing these doors with a plan for the readers and visitors to the library to be able to see the heritage listed southern doors and understand their significance.

Full text
Abstract:

This dissertation circles around the creation of an arts-based film script entitled "Behind Locked Doors." With a story that is located within a fictional psychiatric hospital, the text includes a number of characters whose psychic wounds allow for a depth psychological exploration into a variety of agitating symptoms: sexual trauma, bereavement, psychosis, grandiosity, narcissism, and multiple personality disorder, among others. The core theme underlying the creative work is that of imagination, especially how it reveals and expresses itself along a twisting ambivalent line between healing and disintegration. Viewing the imaginative function from diverse standpoints as embodied in each character's personality, the dissertation examines how traditional Western pharmaceutical and re-adjustment therapies stack up against more soul-oriented healing methodologies, including Jung's individuation process, Hillman's archetypal psychologizing, Sufi imaginal traditions, and creative play therapies. The literature review and methodology chapters survey the imaginal landscape from hermeneutic, phenomenological, active imagining, carnivalesque, narrative storytelling and arts based traditions, amongst others. Scientific and theological concepts, especially those that incorporate an abundance of imagination, such as cosmological physics and Dante's divine poetic crossing of life and death thresholds, are also explored. The concluding chapter reflects upon similarities between the alchemical process of psychic expansion as revealed in the Rosarium pictures and the film scriptwriting process of discovering transformational images through a long-term steady practice of active imagination. A brief review of popular films that address psychiatric hospital themes and issues rounds off the dissertation.

Fennell, Jac, Cathy Treadaway, and Aidan Taylor. "Open Doors: designing playful objects for dementia." TUDpress, 2019. https://tud.qucosa.de/id/qucosa%3A36604.

Full text
Abstract:
This design-based submission comprises a prototype design for a playful object for use in dementia care and the ‘Open Doors’ documentary video that explains the underpinning research collaboration. LUMA is a hand-held playful object, designed for people living with advanced dementia, and is one of six design outputs from the recently completed AHRC-funded LAUGH project. This qualitative design research used participatory and co-design methods and Compassionate Design methodology to investigate how playful objects can be designed to support the wellbeing of people living with advanced dementia. One of the major challenges facing society is how to provide appropriate care for the increasing numbers of people living with dementia and to ensure that they are able to live well, right until the end of their lives. The aim of the research was to investigate ways to stimulate, engage and bring pleasure to people living with advanced dementia through the creation of simple hand-held devices. LUMA is an object that was developed in collaboration with members of the Men’s Shed in Tondu. The accompanying ‘Open Doors’ film explains how the LAUGH design team exchanged their digital fabrication expertise with members of the Men’s Shed who were skilled in hand crafting wooden objects. The creative collaboration resulted in LUMA, a hand-held interactive object that brings the outside experience of nature inside through touch, light and sound.

The construction industry often related to high handwork production processes, which results in waste of physical and financial resources. The current great demand for new buildings leads to the need of industrialized elements, components and technologies in order to push the evolution of the construction process. In view of these aspects, modular coordination stands out as an excellent strategic tool since it aims to organize the dimensions of buildings, in order to reduce the variety of sizes in which the elements and components are produced, allowing its ready installation without the need of any modification. The structural masonry stands out in this direction since its design is guided by modular coordination, allowing the application of this concept and thereby to rationalize the subsystems of larger impact of the building: the partitions and the building structure. However, although this system contributes to the modular coordination, other construction components and elements must also have modular measures, being the element door an example. With that in mind, this research seeks to contribute to the dimensional standardization of "opening doors with one leaf" through the diagnosis of modular dimensions suitable for structural masonry designs. Initially, it was diagnosed the possible modular dimensions for the door space. The analyses resulted in the possible horizontal space before de door installation of widths with final 1 (61, 71, 81, cm) and 6 (66, 76, 86, cm). The vertical modular space is equal to 221 cm before any other construction element is added and 217 cm considering a regularization capping and floor tile over the slab (nominal). The width of wood door leaf is currently commercialized with dimensions ending with 0 (60, 70, 80, cm) and 2 (62, 72, 82, cm). These dimensions were diagnosed suitable to modular masonry design when combined with door post thickness of 2 and 2,5 cm respectively. However the 210 cm height, available in the market, proved to be inadequate. With this dimension a construction solution is need to fill the gap between the door and masonry, which is not wanted and becoming very undesirable today. The study leaded to the conclusion that a door leaf height of 212,5 cm would be ideal. Also, although it is possible wood-doors of 0 and 2 endings widths (current standard) changing the standards to width with endings dimensions of 3 (63, 73, 83, ... cm) and 8 (68, 78, 88, cm) would make possible to have the same width standard for door leafs of several materials (wood, metal). The metal doors of steel and aluminum are available in the market in several different. Although most of them are suitable for the modular dimensions the proposals are made here to standardize and reduce the number of different dimensions. The first one has lower impact, just recommends to eliminated some of the marketed dimensions standardizing to width endings with 1 (61, 71, 81, cm) and in height 211 cm. The other suggestion has higher impact, but allows the same dimensions for doors of different materials, thus having only one dimension standard for door leafs regardless of its material.

Perkin, Simon Michael. "Off-line condition monitoring of powered train doors." Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 2002. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/20221/.

Full text
Abstract:
Powered passenger train door unreliability is a major source of in-service delay and cancellation to passenger train services. This unreliability costs UK Train Operating Companies significant amounts of money through Railtrack charges, customer compensation payments and loss of revenue as well as door maintenance and repair procedures. The successful and reliable identification of incipient powered door faults could therefore help to reduce these charges and subsequent maintenance costs, increase train reliability and potentially reduce safety-related incidents. This thesis presents the research and development of an off-line condition monitoring tool for electric powered passenger train doors, the Door Analysis Tool. The Door Analysis Tool was developed through a two-year, collaborative TCS project between Sheffield Hallam University and Interfleet Technology, an international railway engineering consultancy. The project was partly funded by the Department of Trade and Industry. This thesis focuses on a number of primary areas of work, namely: Introduction to powered train doors and condition monitoring in the railway industry; Identification of suitable data collection and condition monitoring equipment forpowered train doors; Development of suitable data analysis and interpretation algorithms; Development of a commercially viable prototype condition monitoring product forpowered passenger train doors, the Door Analysis Tool; Validation of the Door Analysis Tool through theoretical and practical testing; Identification of further development opportunities and further future work. The Door Analysis Tool uses clamp-on current probes to measure the door motor current characteristic and traction interlock status during opening and closing cycles to monitor the performance of train doors. It offers a range of opportunities to different parties within the railway industry to help reduce the impact of powered train door unreliability and thereby improve train performance through the identification of faulty train doors prior to costly in-service failures. The practical testing of the prototype Door Analysis Tool showed that it functions as intended in a train maintenance depot environment and that it is capable of collecting, analysing and classifying data relating to train door performance. The theoretical tests presented the prototype Door Analysis Tool with nine different sets of data, each representing a range of faulty and fault-free door operations. The Door Analysis Tool was able to correctly classify six of the nine tests. Three of the tests incorporating minor fault conditions were not highlighted by the door performance classification, however all of the theoretical faults were identifiable through inspection of the analysis parameters, which can be stored after each test. The sensitivity of the Door Analysis Tool analysis routines can be adjusted to tailor the tool to different systems.

Abstract:
Intercultural communication is an area of many possibility existence that allows consideration of contemporary dialog with Other, who is opposite to us. To be a participant of intercultural dialogue we are obliged to develope knowledge of cultural differences item, that is crucial feature of intercultural competence, that drives to effective dimension in dialogue relationship matter. Father of intercultural communication is Edward T. Hall, who claimed that Culture is a communication and communication is a culture. In the language there is placed culture landscape and through the language we can better understand mentality and cultural beliefs of its representants. Object of my dissertation is referred to intercultural communication phenomenons, particularly I focus on communication devoted to minorities groups. Social perceptions towards minorities always encounter categories of stereotypes and myths that exist in general discourse that is referred to particular group and at the same time used by majority representants. This work is an attempt to analyze the discourse accompanying communication on the phenomenon of discrimination against Christian minorities in different parts of the world, with use of selected case study, that is example of non governmental organization Open Doors functionality. A base for discourse analyze and main source of data about Christian minorities position in global and local scale for this workshop purposes I used content shared in virtual space. Because of extremely wide territory specific for the phenomenon, analyze was forced to be focus on Pakistani Christian minority. Methodologically I am oriented to cultural studies perspective, which will allow to undertake multi-aspect understanding of many mixed phenomenons. On the one side created is the description and interpretation of particular discourse, on the other this is complex type of research to reveal covered spaces of discourse semantics. The nature of discourse in most cases produces many simplifications and requires conscious reception, for which humanistic research is appropriate one to apply.

Ross, Fiona C. "Houses without doors : diffusing domesticity in Die Bos." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/22410.

Full text
Abstract:
Bibliography: pages 194-207.
This ethnography is the product of fourteen months of communication with residents of a squatter settlement near Somerset West in the Western Cape. The thesis explores the ways in which domestic relationships altered over the research period, locating these changing patterns in the contexts of informal settlement in the region. I show that in the context of the settlement the use of household as an analytic term was problematic because domestic relationships were fluid and ephemeral, making it difficult to establish patterns of 'belonging' over time. Network approaches are more effective than household in describing social relationships, but networks were also problematic in that they tend to assume patterns of reciprocity which were not always echoed in the behaviours of residents of Die Bos. The thesis concentrates on three main areas of social interaction. I explore labour relationships within and between households, showing that a focus solely on households obscures the processes of labour allocation within domestic units, and those which occur across their (permeable) boundaries. I examine changing patterns of commensality among some members of the population of Die Bos, showing how movement and labour were intimately linked with eating patterns. Here I show how the most effective way of describing these patterns is in terms of networks of informal interaction which are formalised briefly. I then discuss of how movements of certain sections of the population render the boundaries of domestic units extremely permeable. I conclude by showing that although the notion of household is useful in some contexts in describing interactions in Die Bos, it tends to assume too much homogeneity and constancy to describe accurately the fluidity of social relationships. Network approaches are possibly of greater use in such descriptions, but are shown to be problematic in that they assume constancy (although of a lesser degree than households do) in interaction.

Full text
Abstract:
This study concerns the false doors of Hershefnakht, Nyankhanty and Senetites that are currently on display in the Museum of Mediterranean and Near Eastern Antiquities in Stockholm. None of these doors has received much attention in the past, and certainly not their own dedicated study. Previously, these doors have only been roughly dated, and the status of their owners in society were practically unknown. This study seeks to narrow down the dating of these false doors and to more precisely make a judgement on their owners’ social standing within society. To more precisely date the false doors, relevant features are presented together with relevant information concerning the characteristic in question. As such, a more precise date is built from the various relevant elements of the door. The false doors are translated with appropriate commentary on the short texts. The most important parts of these texts are the titles and through comparisons to other holders of the same titles and discussion of what is known about these titles; a judgement of their social status is made. In the end, Hershefnakht’s and Senetites’ doors can be dated to, at earliest, the reign of Pepy II though their latest possible date is more difficult to establish with any certainty. Nyankhanty’s false door can be dated, at earliest to King Nyuserre Ini’s reign with the latest possible date being the end of the 5th dynasty. Due to only having a single title, Hershefnakht’s social standing is somewhat uncertain and it would be possible to both over- and underplay his status. On the other hand, Nyankhanty’s status can be established with more certainty and it seems he was a high-ranking priest and a commander of a force of men. Senetites can quite easily be placed in or close to the court, but the position therein is more difficult to define.

Liu, Hongfen. "A structural design comparison of metallic and composite aircraft pressure retaining doors." Thesis, Cranfield University, 2012. http://dspace.lib.cranfield.ac.uk/handle/1826/7308.

Full text
Abstract:
The pressure retaining door is obviously a sensible part of an aircraft, and the design criteria is much more critical than for the fuselage, so a problem caused by this critical criteria is the heavy weight of the door structure because it should be strong enough to withstand loads and stiff enough to meet the sealing requirements. In spite of the pressure retaining door being so important, it is difficult to find design references. So, in this thesis, the pressure retaining door is investigated first, and then a typical structure of a type A door is selected as the study case using both metallic and composite material, in order to generate a standard method for door structure design, and to identify the key factors which can affect the structure weight. The study indicates that the structure weight of a type A door can be kept in a range for different combinations of beams and stringers, and the composite door structure can be 20% lighter than the metallic door while the stiffness of the two doors remains similar. It is found that the skin contributes much more weight to the door structure than other components and the skin thickness is affected by the short edge of the skin panel divided by beams and stringers. The results also found that it is much more serious when the end stop fails than when the middle stops fail. Therefore, it appears that the composite door is a good material as an alternative to aluminium. Also the method of door structure design is reasonable for the composite door, although it would be better to consider the stiffness of beams while in the theory design period. Besides IRP, the Group Design Project (GDP) is another important part of the MSc study; it lasts nearly half a year and we complete the Fly-wing concept design. The main contribution of the author to the GDP is the arrangement of doors, and also includes the family issues, cabin layout arrangement and a 3D model construct, which can be seen in APPENDIX B. According to the GDP work, I will have broadened my professional knowledge and will have an overall view of aircraft design.

Strasbourg, Christina. "Behind closed doors: Exploring the gated community in Ontario." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/28615.

Abstract:
This study examines the ways in which residents of a Canadian gated community in southern Ontario, Canada socially construct the meaning of both "community" and "safety". In particular, the study examines whether the assumptions and findings on community safety found in the literature on American gated communities apply to similar communities in Canada. Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with four participants to explore the underlying assumptions and stereotypes that participants used in the discussions of community safety. Participants defined a safe community as one that is: homogeneous; excludes strangers and 'others'; provides both physical and social security; built on a sense of community life; and governed by rules and regulations. This study found empirical evidence that helps to validate many of the assumptions in the existing literature: the restriction of access helps residents feel safe; physical infrastructure is needed in order to feel safe; the ability to recognize who is a member of the community makes residents feel safe; and gated communities are viewed by their residents as nostalgic neighborhoods.

Canolli, A. "Behind open doors : restaurants and food culture in Kosova." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2014. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1452980/.

Full text
Abstract:
My dissertation is grounded in a thick ethnography of restaurants as social and material sites in Prishtina, the capital of Kosova. I argue that Kosovar food culture is characterised by its peasant, Ottoman and socialist past. Yet, in the current phase of state-building, Kosovars are constantly seeking to appropriate different ideas, models and practices to construct, reproduce, negotiate and affirm their social and national identity. My ethnography is phenomenologically rooted and dialogically conducted as an embodied approach to the study of commensality, conviviality, sociality and performance in gastronomic ‘third places.’ I look at both spatial and placial aspects of the foodscape as materialised in restaurants. In chapter one, I focus on the Kosovar society in general and Kosovar food culture in particular. Here, I canvas a general foodview of Kosova with particular focus in its socialist past. Then I move to chapter two to discuss relevant literature in the anthropology of food, and my methodology. In chapter three, I focus on ‘banal gastronationalism’ and ‘culidiversity’ as produced, practiced and consumed in restaurants. I also argue that local tradition is represented in the process of appropriating, negotiating and performing culture. In chapter four, I analyse the ways in which ‘village’ food, ‘fast food’ and ‘our food’ have become objectifications of morality, modernity and ideology. This chapter provides a view of foodways, food ideologies, food movements and local coping strategies. In chapter five, I turn to discuss café culture. I argue that cafés play a crucial role in the formation, production, reproduction and exchange of identification capital, public sphere and community building. In the final chapter, I conclude by summarising my thesis and argue that anthropology of postsocialism may benefit from the study of food and restaurants.

Abstract:

The DOORS framework is a versatile, lightweight message-based framework developed in ANSI C++. It builds upon research experience and subsequent knowledge garnered from the use and development of CVOPS and OVOPS, two well known protocol development frameworks that have obtained widespread acceptance and use in both the Finnish industry and academia. It conceptually resides between the operating system and the application, and provides a uniform development environment shielding the developer from operating system speci c issues. It can be used for developing network services, ranging from simple socket-based systems, to protocol implementations, to CORBA-based applications and object-based gateways. Originally, DOORS was conceived as a natural extension from the OVOPS framework to support generic event-based, distributed and client-server network applications. However, DOORS since then has evolved as a platform-level middleware solution for researching the provision of converged services to both packet-based and telecommunications networks, enterprise-level integration and interoperability in future networks, as well as studying application development, multi-casting and service discovery protocols in heterogeneous IPv6 networks. In this thesis, two aspects of development work with DOORS take place. The rst is the investigation of the Network Address Translation (NAT) traversal problem to give support to applications in the DOORS framework that are residing in private IP networks to interwork with those in public IP networks. For this matter this rst part focuses on the development of a client in the DOORS framework for the Session Traversal Utilities for NAT (STUN) protocol, to be used for IP communications behind a NAT. The second aspect involves secure communications. Application protocols in communication networks are easily intercepted and need security in various layers. For this matter the second part focuses on the investigation and development of a technique in the DOORS framework to support the Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol, giving the ability to application protocols to rely on secure transport layer services.

Franks, Jason. "Rethinking the roots of terrorism : through the doors of perception." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/3726.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the new terrorism debate and is intended to rethink the root causes of terrorism by examining alternative approaches, in part provided by conflict theory, to the predominant understanding of terrorism provided by what it identifies as orthodox terrorism theory. It presents a critical and discourse analysis approach to explaining and understanding the roots of terrorism and focuses initially on a description and explanation of the existence of orthodox terrorism discourse, clarifying how and why it is constructed, what it is used for and the associated implications it has for understanding terrorism. The study also aims to explore the range of alternative perceptions of terrorism created in terrorism and conflict studies by using international relations theory as frameworks through which to examine different levels of analysis pertaining to terrorism and conflict. The purpose is to develop a multi-level and multi-dimensional framework for rethinking the roots of terrorism based upon the most sophisticated theoretical approaches provided by terrorism and conflict studies. This framework, which also provides a reflexive critique of orthodox terrorism theory, is not intended as a new theory of terrorism but represents an attempt to provide a broader, more comprehensive and holistic approach to the problem of terrorism. In order to test this comprehensive framework for the analysis of terrorism, this study examines the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and discusses how orthodox terrorism theory is employed by Israel. It also demonstrates how Palestinian terrorism can be re-examined through the application of the alternative framework to reveal a considerably more comprehensive, multi-dimensional and multi-level understanding of the root causes of terrorism. The conclusion of this study suggests that rethinking terrorism will provide an increasingly sophisticated understanding of political violence and equip the study of terrorism with more robust analytical tools with which to create a number of potential channels to facilitate resolution of the deep underlying problems that cause terrorism.
