Full textIn this thesis, we focus on the biases that sampling can cause on the estimation of statistical models and metrics describing ecological interaction networks. First, we propose to combine an observation model that accounts for sampling with a stochastic block model representing the structure of possible interactions. The identifiability of the model is demonstrated and an algorithm is proposed to estimate its parameters. Its relevance and its practical interest are attested on a large dataset of plant-pollinator networks, as we observe structural change on most of the networks. We then examine a large dataset sampled by a citizen science program. Using recent advances in artificial intelligence, we propose a method to reconstruct the ecological network free from sampling effects caused by the varying levels of experience among observers. Finally, we present methods to highlight variables of ecological interest that influence the network's connectivity and show that accounting for sampling effects partially alters the estimation of these effects. Our methods, implemented in either R or Python, are freely accessible

Full textThe objective of this thesis is to validate flow rate measurements collected from the sewer networks. Technical failures in the sensors or the existence of the disturbing phenomena produce anomalies to these measures. Our work consists in proposing a procedure of diagnosis off line able to detect and isolate the defects of measurements. This procedure is based on analytical models. We first established, a set of linear models used to generate faults indicators called residuals. These last ones allowed us to establish the experimental faults signatures matrix. Then, a first technique of diagnosis was considered. It consists in combining the test of Page for faults detection and on the calculation of Euclidean distance between the theoretical faults signatures and the experimental fault signature of each defect for the isolation of the faulty sensor. Two other techniques suggested, are based on the joint analysis of the generated residuals and the symptoms of the defects. One is called DMP (Model Diagnostic Processor) and the other is based on the fuzzy logic concepts. In the end, the performances of these techniques were calculated to be able to compare them. We improved the performances of the last considered technique by proposing a new operator of aggregation and by considering the persistence of the defects

Full textCharacterizing human odor is of particular interest in forensic science. Dogs can find a person using their odor-print, but cannot testify : the information they bring lacks probative value in the courts of justice. Thus, developing a whole analytical strategy, from sampling to analysis and data processing, may support the identification dogs provide. After reviewing the studies that have already worked on the subject, the use of dogs in the police force is developed and some aspects of biometrics are presented to know to if the odor can be used as a biometric trait. Innovative, simple and reliable methods were developed to sample odor, either directly on the subject or indirectly at the scene of the crime. Particular attention is paid to the real samples and their conservation. The ability of analytical techniques to separate and identify different constituents of human odor was assessed. Thus, we have developed an analytical method in two-dimensional gas chromatography integral coupled with mass spectrometry. The performance of several sets of columns was compared by considering nine of the criteria most used in the literature. Finally, we established a representative panel on which we were able to apply statistical approaches for the comparison of samples

Full textScanning technology for handwritten data has reached its momentum after the invention of the digital pen. Research work focused on the development of HMI applications that facilitate digital ink data manipulation. In a research context, digital pen and paper technology is useful for collecting experimental data in various fields. Our goal is to provide support for the processing and the visualization of time stamped data collected by a digital pen in two cases of use : on one hand, in the educational science field, and especially for assessment tests and, on another hand, for taking observation notes. Our approach is to study these cases of use through four concrete experiences and to develop, with the participation of the user, prototypes for a system that aid to process and to visualize collected data. In order to abstract a general model of such a system, we analyzed prototypes user interfaces in terms of functionality, visualization and interaction. Our model describes the visualization process by implementing three types of user tasks namely analytic tasks, handling tasks and interaction tasks
