Full textThe dissertation investigates Arab-Muslim migrant women’s experiences and meanings of parenting in Italy, from a pedagogical perspective. The study originates from observations of a selection of places of encounter and exchange between women, as well as the collection of life stories of mothers of Moroccan or Egyptian origin living in Milan. The aim is to explore their experiences as migrant women-mothers and their representations of parenting and education. The increase in stabilization of migration projects in communities of Arab origin, and the resulting increasing number of women with children in Italian educational contexts (Giacomello et al., 2018a, 2018b; Simina Duma et al., 2018a), together with the spread of prejudices, Islamophobic feelings and discriminatory episodes, especially against Arab-Muslim women (Dessi, 2016; Liepyte & McAloney-Kocaman, 2015; Lunaria, 2019; Perry, 2014), show the urgency to examine parenting in connection with the experience of migration for these groups of women from a pedagogical perspective. From a theoretical point of view, the dissertation is seen in the context of contemporary educational studies on the construction of migrant parenthood (E. Balsamo et al., 2002; Favaro & Colombo, 1993; Iavarone et al., 2015; Portera, 2004; Silva, 2006, 2008; Webb, 2001). It also expands on previous educational research analyzing migration through the gender prism (Cambi et al., 2003a; Campani, 2000; Donato et al., 2006; Favaro & Tognetti Bordogna, 1991; Morokvasic, 1984b; Pessar, 1984; Ulivieri, 2017; Vianello, 2013, 2014). Finally, it develops some indications of method emerging from the tradition of research in family education, specifically concerning parenting support (Catarsi, 2006; Dusi, 2007; Formenti, 2000, 2008; Gopnik, 2017; Milani, 2001, 2009, 2018, Sità, 2005, 2007). In light of these references, field research aimed to: investigate the experiences and meanings of parenting for the women-mothers involved in the research; delve into its formative dimension by determining risk factors and resources in their stories; deduce guiding criteria to re-interpret the construct of parenting and parenting support programs and to develop methodological strategies to approach otherness. Methodologically, the study is based on the tradition of qualitative research in education (Bove, 2009c; Cardano, 2003; Caronia, 1997, 2011; Denzin & Lincoln, 2005; Lumbelli, 1980, 1995; Mantovani, 1998b; Mortari & Ghirotto, 2019). In particular, it positions itself in the wake of recent empirical research in education, adopting ethnographic methodologies (Bove, 2009c, 2019; Caronia, 2018; Caronia & Vassallo, 2015; Gobbo, 2004b, 2011; Leoncini, 2011; Sclavi, 1989; Tobin, 2016; Tobin et al., 2000, 2011), along with others exploring the narrative-biographical dimension (Cambi, 2002; D’Ignazi, 2008, 2016, Demetrio, 1996, 2004; Ferrarotti, 1981; Formenti, 2006; Mantovani, 1998a; Merrill & West, 2012). This research highlights some relevant emerging topics, such as: gender issues between the country of origin and migration; being a mother amongst cultural meanings, migration and cultural transmission; the social support network; the relationship with educational institutions; cultural, religious, and multiple identities. In the area of parenting support, the pedagogical discussion of research findings suggests the adoption of a resources and skills-based approach and the use of methods, and tools derived from ethnography.

Full textThe contribution of oil in the economic growth of arab countries is relatively considerable, but the actual condition of sales and reserves of hydrocarbon of certain countries in the O. A. P. E. C. C appears to be reaching an unquestionable high level. The need for a rapid distribution of oil revenues through accelerated industrialization justifies itself in point of fact concerning this new oil deal. The object of thesis is the study of the dynamics of oil reserves in relation to that of economic activity. In this research we have attempted to deal with the following three themes. - the evolution of different sources of energy - the industrial valorization of hydrocarbons - the 'large-scale' economic results of oil expropriation and subsequent oil stratagies. These are the three points which have been approached in this thesis

Full textThe aim of this work is to answer the research question of whether the theory of universality of certain rights such as those concerning the vulnerable, in particular minorities, women and children, can also be extended to muslim countries, which still insist on cultural specificity instead. Consequently, we decided to study the case of Tunisia, because of both its past full of different civilizations, and the new ongoing process of democratization, and the importance of its subscription to interesting international agreements, such as the Barcelona Pact. What was understood within this thesis is that the obstacle to the protection of certain rights cannot be blamed only on religion; in fact, even if different religions did not exist, it would not be easy as well to guarantee the unconditional respect of the rights of the vulnerable, especially of those minorities such as handicapped and homosexsuals, that unfortunately cannot and will never become a majority. Therefore, in order to reduce and / or resolve these strong disparities related to any legal system, including that of the studied country, it will be necessary to make freedom of conscience a general and effective principle erga omnes, and to ensure that civil society is strengthened and sensitized towards the protection of fundamental rights. This will have to take place not only on a local but also on a universal level, by exploiting dialogue between majorities and minorities, according to the principles of a real democracy. In this way, it would be possible to finally overcome the hostility of political élites which, most of the times, in spite of the various peaceful declarations, trample human rights for economic purposes.

Full textThis research focuses on the representation of the Arabic-Islamic culture in the history textbooks of the first grade secondary school. The fact that the world today is characterized, more than ever, by continuous and inevitable encounters among people from different backgrounds requires a strong commitment to promote peaceful intercultural relations. For this purpose, it is believed that the contents of textbooks have an important role. Hence, the goal is to verify if the textbooks convey an effective education to know and to respect other cultures and religions, to promote intercultural dialogue; and to overcome ethnocentrism, stereotypes and prejudices. So, it was necessary to verify – in the sample of textbooks examined – the presence o any recurring prejudices, stereotypes and ethnocentric perspectives that can be constructed, consolidated, repeated and transmitted, consciously or unconsciously, through statements or images that illustrate the Arabic-Islamic culture. The first part of the thesis, the theoretical one, is dedicated to two themes: the first theme concerns the relationship between East and West and the representation of the others and the second theme concerns the status of Muslim women between stereotypes and reality. The second part, the empirical one, is dedicated to the qualitative content analysis of history textbooks. The analysis results show clear interest, by the authors and editors of the textbooks, for the theme of Arabic-Islamic culture. In spite of that, the texts may contain, although to different extents, stereotypes, generalizations and partial, inaccurate or incorrect information about the Arabic-Islamic culture and about Arabs or Muslims.

Full textAlthough the presence of migrants’ sons and daughters is gaining more and more importance also in Italy, the research have not given special attention to their choices concerning media consumption and to the appropriation of the media as social and environmental resources. This thesis is focused on the case of young women of Arab origin in order to investigate the intersections between news consumption and the negotiation of the social identity. A first focus is on three dimensions: participation, belonging and cultural transmission – in comparison with mothers and peers. A second “macro” level of the research investigates the implications as regard to intercultural dialogue. Through the collection of forty-eight life histories, a first level of diachronic analysis investigates the presence and the intensity of news consumption in different stages in order to understand if it could be a rite of passage to the adulthood, while a second track tries to understand how this is connected to the feeling of being “citizens”, in terms of identification, belonging and to investigate if news consumption may be a resource to be active citizens in the public sphere. All young women of Arab origin live in Milan, they are between eighteen and thirty-two years old, and differ in variables 1) they were born or arrived in Italy since they were 6 years old, 2) activism and 3) religion (Muslims, Coptic Orthodox or atheists).
