Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Master's Degree Thesis, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10579/4895.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:

Doctoral thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2158/1080285.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Apoptosis, known as programmed cell death, has been considered a potent target for the pharmacy industry. The scientific community has actively participated to research which evaluate active molecules for possible inhibition or induction of apoptosis. Nanocarriers especially for cancer targeting are widely found through literature; they mainly based on inorganic, lipid or polymer nanoparticles which incorporate anticancer drugs. Another important and innovative category of anticancer agents is that of microRNAs. In this chapter, a discussion about the most recent applications of apoptosis-based agents mainly focusing on cancer target is done.

Abstract:
The Internet and especially social networking sites provide potent contexts for the formation of individuals’ views of their bodies and appearance. So far, however, research has almost exclusively focused on the negative aspects of these experiences. This chapter proposes that the online context can also be an influential context for positive body-related experiences. In order to make the online context a more positive arena, appearance-related cyberbullying needs to be stopped. Therefore, this chapter starts with a review of appearance-related cyberbullying and elaborates on what can be done about this growing problem. The second part concerns the positive aspects of body image–defining experiences online, such as body acceptance and body activism movements, which may promote positive body image and embodiment. How the online context may constitute an arena for exploration of alternative ideals, resistant communications, and body activism is discussed.

Abstract:
Natural resources especially medicinal plants possess the potentials to sustain all existence on earth. Cymbopogon, a globally cultivated herb, possesses high contents of diverse essential oils for medicinal and economic purposes including treatment of malaria and candidiasis. Notable species include Cymbopogon citratus and C. flexosus having citral as the main chemical compound. Numerous compounds of these species include limonene, citronella, geranyl acetic derivatives, elemol, among others. Phytochemical analysis of these essential oils is usually done by the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method sequel to obtaining them through solvent extraction, hydrodistillation, supercritical CO2 extraction, chromatography among others. Although the supercritical CO2 extraction method gives greater quality yields void of toxic wastes with preserved thermal stability compared with other methods, its high-working pressure generates issues of safety risks and costs. Quantitative determination is done using spectrophotometric, chromatographic, and Folin-Ciocalteu methods. In comparison with other chromatographic techniques employed, gas chromatography exhibits greater efficiency by quantifying and determining the presence of various components at low concentrations. This prominently economical plant with potent ethnobotanical benefits hinged on the essential oils phytochemicals is faced with diverse extraction challenges; thus, improvement in the extraction and quantification techniques is key to the harvest of pure yields of lemon grass essential oils.

Abstract:
Postmenopause is the period or period that occurs after women enter menopause. Menopause is the cessation of menstruation for 12 consecutive months. Menopause occurs due to the cessation of ovulation and hypoestrogenism or a decrease in the hormone estrogen, in this case, estradiol, a potent hormone owned by women. Hypoestrogenism causes various changes, including changes in the oral cavity. Some changes in the oral cavity are reduced salivary flow so that the mouth becomes dry. Dry mouth or xerostomia can increase the prevalence of caries in the oral cavity. In addition to decreased salivary flow, there is also a thinning of the gingival epithelium, which facilitates bacterial invasion and reduces alveolar bone mineral density associated with bone resorption, thereby increasing the risk of tooth mobility and even tooth loss. Prevention and treatment of periodontal destruction need to be done at this time, considering this is one of the factors that can improve the quality of life.

Abstract:
Fission-track dating, one of the more recent techniques involving the use of radioactivity, has developed one of the widest ranges of applications. Dates of objects have been obtained ranging from 6 months to 109 years BP. Volcanic tephra, obsidian, man-made and basaltic glass, meteorites, and mica have been dated. A more apt term is nuclear-track dating because fissionable elements do not have to be present in the material. Fission, which produces one form of nuclear track, is a rare mode of radioactive decay. A more common decay is alpha decay, which produces a different type of track. Uranium 238 fissions spontaneously and has a well-defined half-life. It also fissions in the presence of neutrons such as are produced by reactors, accelerators, or neutron "howitzers." About 99.27% of all uranium is uranium 238. Robert L. Fleischer, Paul B. Price, and Robert M. Walker, who have done most of the original work in this field, have determined that most minerals contain this isotope in amounts from a few parts per billion (ppb) to many parts per million (ppm). These researchers devised a chart which characterizes the ease of use of this technique as a function of the uranium concentration. A high uranium concentration allows an "easily measured" age where the observer spends an hour at the microscope counting chemically etched fission tracks. For "considerable labor," 40 hours of such work is assumed. Ancient synthetic glass typically contains 1-2 ppm of uranium, so most glasses older than 8,000 years are datable. Most pottery clay contains about 5 ppm of uranium in either the clay itself or other minerals that occur as inclusions. It is very probable that some pottery clays or the mineral inclusions, such as zircon, might contain higher concentrations than this, which would make the age measurement lie between "easily" and "with considerable labor." It is important to point out that mineral inclusions such as zircons or micas act as solid-state detectors in that they register fissions as a track on the surface in contact with the pottery clay. Both fission and alpha events can do this.

Abstract:
In the second chapter, the author describes some research by cognitive scientists, who posit nonconceptual representations to explain certain perceptual capacities (and incapacities). This research and the way in which it is reported illustrate the type of theoretical work done by an error-permitting notion of nonconceptual representation, alongside a malfunction-permitting notion of function. One set of studies (led by McCloskey) that is described in some detail focuses on an unusual deficit in locating visual targets (in a young woman, AH), which were intended to contribute to understanding normal human vision. The author makes clear why the contents ascribed to the underlying representational states, where the errors first occur, are referential-intentional contents, not merely (natural-factive) informational contents, and why their ascriptions count as intensional, according to standard criteria. Toward the end of the chapter, the author reminds readers of a familiar conundrum: if a representation’s having content is not causally potent in a psychological process, why is it (still) a central tenet of mainstream cognitive science that such a process should be understood as representational?

Abstract:
The article is devoted to further development of historical-and-cultural approach and methods of earthenware vessels study. A.A. Bobrinsky laid the principles of the approach and respective methods in several articles (Bobrinsky, 1986, 1988a, b, 1991). Three main stages of vessel shapes study are expounded in the article: preparatory, analytical and interpretation stages. The main attention is paid to the analytical stage. It is assumed that content of the interpretation stage will be expounded in a special article based on specific ethnographic and archeological materials. Within framework of analytical stage of vessel shapes study 5 levels of analysis are considered successively: I – analysis of general proportionality (GP) of vessel forms; II – analysis of vessel shapes’ natural structure; III – analysis of extent of functional parts’ maturity; IV – analysis of vessel shapes’ elementary structure; V – analysis of vessel shapes’ curved line (“covers”). Various aspects of potters’ cultural traditions in the sphere of certain vessel shapes creation are analyzed at all levels. At the same time the deeper is the level of shapes analysis, the more detailed cultural peculiarities of population and potters are discovered and fixed. Every level of analysis can be applied to any of 7 functional parts that form the natural structure of specific vessels. It should be emphasized that in this article an extent of functional parts’ maturity is analyzed in considerably greater detail than it was done earlier. Some rules of vessel shapes comparative analysis are expounded in the concluding section. Such analysis is performed pursuant to research tasks in two directions: in direction of certain potters’ individual skills and in direction of cultural traditions of human collectives. In the latter case an extent of cultural homogeneity of collective traditions is fixed. Infraction of the pottery traditions may be related to cultural infiltration (which brings about the beginning of mixture process), to different stages of cultural integration (which means development of mixture process) and to cultural assimilation (the mixture process completion).

Abstract:
The presented study demonstrates the enormous potentials of translating mathematical expressions into their relevant physical meanings. In the past, such translations have proven capable of explaining the cause(s) of phenomena, which seemed to defy all principles of common sense. In other cases, they were able to rectify deeply rooted misconceptions, which haunted the engineers for many decades. Among others, they have revealed the need for revising everything what has been done in the last eight decades in relation to the head developed by an impeller. All the above conclusions are here supported by actual case histories from past experience. The discussions presented in this study relate directly to the design of centrifugal and other rotodynamic pumps. However, there exist strong indications, that such translations may prove equally useful also in other fields of engineering.

Abstract:
Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) consists of vascular, sensorineural and musculoskeletal disorders and affects around 1.7–5.8% of industrial workers. In this study, a rat-tail vibration injury model is used to assess early vascular damage due to HAVS, manifested in the form of endothelial cell vacuolation and oxidative injury. Tails were vibrated at two frequencies 125Hz and 250Hz for 4hr/day for 1 and 5 days (49m/s2). Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining was done to assess gross changes in artery sections and toluidine blue stain was done for vacuole counting. Immunohistochemical (IHC) methods were used to detect Nitrotyrosine, a potent biomarker of cell inflammation and oxidative stress. The vacuole count in Endothelial Cells (ECs) was not statistically significant after 1 and 5 days for any frequency. However IHC images showed significant oxidative damage in Endothelial Cells (ECs) with considerable oxidative damage being induced as early as 1 day for both 125Hz and 250Hz frequencies, with more EC damage induced by 250Hz frequency after 5 days. These findings indicate that higher frequency vibrations can cause severe oxidative damage to EC.

Abstract:
The borehole disposal concept (BDC) was first presented to ICEM by Potier, J-M in 2005 [1]. This paper repeats the basics introduced by Potier and relates further developments. It also documents the history of the development of the BDC. For countries with no access to existing or planned geological disposal facilities for radioactive wastes, the only options for managing high activity or long-lived disused radioactive sources are to store them indefinitely, return them to the supplier or find an alternative method of disposal. Disused sealed radioactive sources (DSRS) pose an unacceptable radiological and security risk if not properly managed. Out of control sources have already led to many high-profile incidents or accidents. One needs only to remember the recent accident in India that occurred earlier this year. Countries without solutions in place need to consider the future management of DSRSs urgently. An on-going problem in developing countries is what to do with sources that cannot be returned to the suppliers, sources for which there is no further use, sources that have not been maintained in a working condition and sources that are no longer suitable for their intended purpose. Disposal in boreholes is intended to be simple and effective, meeting the same high standards of long-term radiological safety as any other type of radioactive waste disposal. It is believed that the BDC can be readily deployed with simple, cost-effective technologies. These are appropriate both to the relatively small amounts and activities of the wastes and the resources that can realistically be found in developing countries. The South African Nuclear Energy Corporation Ltd (Necsa) has carried out project development and demonstration activities since 1996. The project looked into the technical feasibility, safety and economic viability of BDC under the social, economic, environmental and infrastructural conditions currently prevalent in Africa. Implementation is near at hand with work being done in Ghana with support from the IAEA. Here the site selection is complete and studies are being carried out to test the site parameters for inclusion into the safety assessment.

Abstract:
With the notion of accidental city, understood, as the distance between project and experience, are defined those conditions, where existent urban experience is not formulated within the project or system of projects present in a location. It is an external experience, not given by the statements, objectives, techniques and representations of a plan. This surplus would be more accurately determinable in plans of instrumental approach, which clearly declare its limits, and show no interest in the experience obtained after its implementation. Outstanding instances of these conditions are the urban expressways, as being very specialized ways that cross the territory, often producing tense and powerful visual experience. One review of the confrontation of project operation and experience, as well as a proposal for its representation, is performed for the Costanera Norte Expressway in Santiago de Chile.

Abstract:
During the conceptual design process of an engine, a thermodynamic cycle is initially defined. This is done to ensure that all aircraft requirements, defined in a number of discrete operating points, can be met. Critical component requirements can then be screened off from these operating points underpinning the conceptual design process. As an example, this has traditionally meant that aerodynamic sizing for low specific thrust turbofan engines occurs at top-of-climb and mechanical and temperature constraints are set at take-off. By providing additional parameters indicating the level of technology assumed, such as diffusion factors and stage loadings, a basic geometric representation of the engine can be mapped out as part of the conceptual design process. However, by choosing the parameters representing the component technology levels explicitly, the ability to trade efficiency for weight, or efficiency for cost, becomes less potent. In general, an explicit parameter choice will mean that a suboptimal solution is found. Hence, it makes sense to develop methods that allow including these technology parameters into the conceptual design and performance modeling process in a consistent way. If, for instance, component efficiency is modeled based on turbomachinery stage loading, including the stage loading parameters into the optimization means that the efficiency must be updated based on the stage loading variation. In general, a consistent method requires that conceptual design input is collected in a number of performance operating points, transferred into the conceptual design process and that output from the conceptual design process is returned to the optimizer. To illustrate the consistent conceptual design and performance modeling process, turbomachinery component models are included in the paper, interrelating polytropic efficiency, Reynolds number, size effects and component entry into service. These equations are solved consistently in the conceptual design and performance modeling to establish an optimum year 2020 engine. The method is then further illustrated by comparing the year 2020 engine with two year 2030 engines. The first year 2030 engine is established by an optimization assuming fixed polytropic turbomachinery efficiencies. The other case is defined by assuming the same engine architecture, i.e., the same number of turbomachinery stages as the year 2020 engine. In this case, the efficiency modeling is done using a consistent conceptual design optimization. The consistent optimization produced a more efficient engine despite the fact that the stage numbers were limited to the year 2020 configuration. The benefit is obtained by more thoroughly exploring the pressure ratio distribution between the engine components, as a result of the consistent optimization methodology.

Abstract:
Abstract The air-breathing Brayton cycle is widespread throughout power generation and propulsion systems, making it a staple in every mechanical or aerospace engineering student’s repertoire. Students are typically introduced to cycle analysis in a thermodynamics course and may see more in-depth coverage of gas turbines in advanced technical elective courses. In the Air-Breathing Propulsion course at The Ohio State University, students perform thermodynamic analysis on Brayton cycle engines among other topics. Pedagogy research has shown active learning to be a potent tool for enhancing student learning, and it was decided to incorporate a new active learning module into the existing course. For the module to be successful, students must achieve the learning objectives, positively accept the experience, and the module must have a minimal impact on the course structure. One lecture and one homework assignment were devoted to the use of this tool to allow students to explore gas turbine cycle analysis. A new tool, Brayton Cycle Compare & Solve, has been developed for this module. The tool can accurately perform thermodynamic design point analysis of three types of Brayton cycle engines and allow users to graphically compare the results of their analyses. This study is done to present the tool and active learning experience to educators, capture the effectiveness of the tool in an educational setting, and determine whether students enjoy the new tool. The program is evaluated through an Institutional Review Board approved study consisting of two parts. First, students participate in a survey based on the Student Response to Instruction Practices tool to determine how the students react to and accept the active learning experience. Second, a detailed analysis of their homework responses is conducted to determine the extent to which they satisfied the learning objectives. Students unanimously felt that the learning experience with Brayton Cycle Compare & Solve is a valuable addition to the course, and homework analysis shows that their understanding of Brayton cycle analysis improved.
