Full text
Abstract:
The barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) chlorina f2 3613 mutant exhibits low photosynthesis and slow growth. This results from downregulation of the levels of photosynthetic antenna proteins caused by the absence of chl b, the major regulator of photosynthetic antennae in land plants. Here, we demonstrate that, when grown in the field in full sunlight, this mutant displays a changed pattern of stomatal responses compared with the parental wild-type cultivar Donaria. However, stomatal regulation of chlorina f2 3613 plants was restored when plants were placed under a shade cover for several days. The shade cover reduced incident PAR from 2000–2200 μmol m–2 s–1 to 800–880 μmol m–2 s–1 as measured at noon. Contents of ABA, the xanthophyll precursors of ABA biosynthesis and minor antenna proteins, as well as reactive oxygen species levels in stomata and the sensitivity of stomata to exogenously supplied ABA, were determined in leaves of wild-type Donaria and chlorina f2 3613 before and after shading. The results support the view that the restoration of stomatal control in barley chlorina f2 3613 is correlated with an increase in the levels of the minor antenna protein Lhcb6, which has recently been implicated in the enhancement of stomatal sensitivity to ABA in Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh.

Abstract:
Specimens of Donacia primaeva Wickham from the Oligocene Florissant shales of Colorado are indistinguishable from male specimens of the extant species Plateumaris nitida (Germar), and are assigned to the P. nitida group. A fossil from the Late Paleocene Paskapoo Formation of Alberta (Donacia wightoni n.sp.) is the oldest fossil of Donaciinae, assigned to Donacia (Donacia), an ecologically and structurally highly derived subgenus. Both species are assigned to small groups of extant species which are not the most primitive Donaciinae. They are similar to extant taxa, which suggests they have maintained considerable structural stasis over a long period of time.

AbstractThe Donacia subtilis species-group, comprising D. subtilis Kunze, D. fulgens LeConte, D. confluenta Say, and D. tuberculifrons Schaeffer, is newly defined. A key to species, and genitalic figures of males for the species are given. Types are designated for all names where necessary. Donacia cuprea Kirby, 1837 (lectotype female, BMNH, designated herein), the oldest name available for D. quadricollis, auctorum, is revalidated. Donacia quadricollis Say, 1827 (neotype male, MCZ, designated herein) is newly placed as junior subjective synonym of D. subtilis Kunze, 1818. Donacia confluenta Say, 1827 (neotype male, MCZ, designated herein) is removed from synonymy of D. subtilis Kunze on the basis of differences in male genitalic structure. Donacia magistrigata Mead, 1938, is transferred from junior subjective synonymy of D. fulgens LeConte, 1851 (lectotype male, MCZ, designated herein) to junior subjective synonymy of D. subtilis Kunze, on the basis of similarity of male genitalic structure. The collection of Ahrens is lost, therefore a neotype for D. aenea Ahrens, 1810, not Hoppe, 1795, is designated (CNC, male). Donacia aerea Lacordaire, 1845 (lectotype, male, BMNH, designated herein) remains as junior subjective synonym of D. subtilis Kunze.

Abstract:
AbstractNorth American members of the genus Plateumaris Thomson, 1859, are revised; 17 species are recognized and 23 taxonomic changes are made in their classification. Plateumaris balli and P. schaefferi are described as new species. Names elevated from subspecies to species rank are P. robusta (Schaeffer) and P. frosti (Schaeffer); P. aurifera (LeConte) is revalidated, removed from junior synonymy with P. wallisi (Schaeffer); Donacia idola Hatch is considered a junior subjective synonym of P. dubia (Schaeffer); D. pyritosa LeConte is considered a junior subjective synonym of P. pusilla (Say); an altered species concept is transferred to P. flavipes (Kirby), with D. wallisi Schaeffer as a new junior subjective synonym, and P. flavipes of authors is correctly named P. shoemakeri (Schaeffer); D. longicollis Schaeffer and D. vermiculata Schaeffer are considered new junior subjective synonyms of P. neomexicana (Schaeffer); D. flavipennis Mannerheim is considered a junior subjective synonym of P. germari (Mannerheim); D. rufa Say (not D. rufa of authors) is transferred to Plateumaris from Donacia, with an altered species concept applied to it, and D. affinis Kirby, D. sulcicollis Lacordaire, D. chalcea Lacordaire, D. kirbyi Lacordaire, and D. jucunda LeConte are considered new junior subjective synonyms of P. rufa (Say). The taxon previously considered D. nitida Germar (sensu Schaeffer) is redescribed as P. schaefferi; P. nitida (Germar) is a valid, different species, with D. emarginata Kirby, D. juncina Couper, and D. pacifica Schaeffer considered new junior subjective synonyms of P. nitida. Neotypes are designated for Donacia pusilla Say, Donacia rufa Say, Donacia metallica Ahrens and Donacia nana Melsheimer; lectotypes are designated for all other names, where necessary.Among Palaearctic taxa, Plateumaris morimotoi Kimoto and P. hirashimai Kimoto are considered new junior subjective synonyms of P. weisei Duvivier, and P. sachalinensis Medvedev, P. orientalis Shavrov and Donacia mongolica Semenov are considered probable junior subjective synonyms of P. weisei; P. sulcifrons Weise and P. affinis (Kunze) and its synonyms are considered new junior subjective synonyms of P. rustica (Kunze); P. caucasica Zaitsev is considered a probable junior subjective synonym of P. roscida Weise; P. discolor (Panzer) (and its synonyms) and P. lacordairii (Perris) are considered junior subjective synonyms of P. sericea (L.); new P. obsoleta Jacobson and P. socia Chen are considered probable junior subjective synonyms of P. sericea.Based on phylogenetic analysis, five species groups are recognized, the P. braccata group (two species), P. rufa group (five species), P. pusilla group (eight species), P. shoemakeri group (four species), and P. nitida group (seven species). The current subgeneric classification of Plateumaris is rejected. Characters hitherto used for subgenera of Plateumaris are shown to be either plesiomorphic or widely distributed among unrelated taxa; the relatively minor structural differences do not merit use of a subgeneric classification. Juliusina Reitter is a junior objective synonym of Plateumaris Thomson.Based on fossil and chorological data, the geographic history of donaciines in general and of Plateumaris in particular is deduced to be so old as to obscure correlations of more recent phylogenetic divergences with specific geologic events. The geographic history of even the most highly derived donaciine groups extends well into the Cretaceous. Therefore, explanations are speculative beyond the generality that donaciines have a long geologic history.

Abstract:
This study was carried out to investigate the distribution, morphological and ecological characteristics, cross fertility and peroxidase banding pattern in floral buds of wild Prunus yedoensis var. nudiflora and its putative parents, P. subhirtella and P. donarium growing at Haenam districts in Korea. P. yedoensis was distributed 200-250 m elevation and showed extensive variations in sterility and morphological variations. The morphological characteristics of P. yedoensis are judged to be intermediate between P. subhirtella and P. donarium. P. subhirtella and P. donarium were naturally found 150-350 m and 150-900 m elevation. Flowering date of p. subhirtella, P. donarium and p. Yedoensis were early April, mid-to-late April and around April 8, respectively. The floral morphology of p. yedoensis showed greater variations than that of p. subhirtella. It is proved that p. yedoensis is an interspecific hybrid between P. subhirtella and P. donarium considering the intermediate characteristics of flower, leaf and peroxidase banding pattern of the floral buds by isoelectric focusing electrophoresis.

Abstract:
Because of concerns that meat in donairs could allow growth of pathogens during cooking and overnight cooling of leftovers, 34 donairs from eleven establishments had temperatures taken and were examined microbiologically. Temperatures varied depending on depth of measurement and stage from the raw product to reheated leftovers. These were frequently >4 or <60°C and could be considered at temperatures favorable for growth of pathogens. Although aerobic colony counts were high (mean of 105 to 107 CFU/g), counts tended to decrease the longer the donair remained cooking on the spit. Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Clostridium perfringens and Escherichia coli were never more than 104/g despite some abusive practices, such as leaving donairs on the spit with the heat source turned off because the demand was low. Salmonella was found only in raw chicken slices to be used in donairs. It is recommended that good hygienic practices be encouraged at donair establishments and temperature measurements of donairs taken to verify these. Only if meat is <50°C at 1 cm below the surface during cooking or >5°C for the raw product or cooled leftovers, should samples be considered for microbiological analysis unless abusive practices have been observed. Because temperatures may vary over a short period of time during cooking, at least five measurements are recommended for each stage of the donair life (raw product, cooking donair, cooled leftovers and reheating donairs).

Abstract:
Arundo donax (giant reed) is invasive in Mediterranean, sub-, and tropical riparian systems worldwide. The armored scale Rhizaspidiotus donacis is approved for biocontrol in North America, but an adventive population was recently discovered in southern California. We documented this population’s distribution, phylogeny, phenology, potential host spillover to Phragmites spp., and potential for parasitism by a common biocontrol parasitoid of citrus scale. The adventive scale was found within a single watershed and is genetically closest to Iberian scale genotypes. Rhizaspidiotus donacis developed on Phragmites haplotypes but at much lower densities than Arundo. The adventive population is univoltine, producing crawlers from March-June. Aphytis melinus parasitoids exhibited sustained interest in R. donacis during choice and no-choice trials and oviposition resulted in a small second generation. Rhizaspidiotus donacis appears limited in distribution by its univoltinism and sessile adult females. This presents challenges for broad biocontrol implementation but allows for targeted application. The genetic differentiation between imported biocontrol samples and adventive populations presents an opportunity for exploring benefits of hybrids and/or alternative genotypes where establishment has been difficult. While unlikely to occur in situ, spillover to vulnerable endemic Phragmites or deleterious parasitoid effects on scale biocontrol agents warrants consideration when planning use of R. donacis.

Abstract:
The estimation of glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) provides prognostic information in patients with heart failure (HF). Bioelectrical impedance analysis may calculate eGFR (Donadio formula). The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of the Donadio formula in predicting all-cause mortality in patients with HF as compared to Cockroft-Gault, MDRD-4 (Modification of Diet in renal Disease Study), and Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) formulas. Four-hundred thirty-six subjects with HF (52% men; mean age 75 ± 11 years; 42% acute HF) were enrolled. Ninety-two patients (21%) died during the follow-up (median 463 days, IQR 287–669). The area under the receiver operator characteristic curve for eGFR, as estimated by Cockroft-Gault formula (AUC = 0.75), was significantly higher than those derived from Donadio (AUC = 0.72), MDRD-4 (AUC = 0.68), and CKD-EPI (AUC = 0.71) formulas. At multivariate analysis, all eGFR formulas were independent predictors of death; 1 mL/min/1.73 m2 increase in eGFR—as measured by Cockroft-Gault, Donadio, MDRD-4, and CKD-EPI formulas—provided a 2.6%, 1.5%, 1.2%, and 1.6% increase, respectively, in mortality rate. Conclusions. eGFR, as calculated with the Donadio formula, was an independent predictor of mortality in patients with HF as well as the measurements derived from MDRD4 and CKD-EPI formulas, but less accurate than Cockroft-Gault.

AbstractReuven Yaron (1924–2014) in memoriamThe importance of Ancient Jewish Law for Roman Law and Ancient Legal History – the example of the Rabbinic reception and modification of the Greco-Hellenistic diathēkē as dîjathîqî and the donatio mortis causa. This paper aims to show that ancient Jewish law is of greatest importance for interpreting Roman law and understanding ancient legal history. After exemplifying the close relation of the Pentateuch and the cuneiform law, we focus on the reception and modification of the Greco-Hellenistic diathēkē (testament), which came into Jewish law during tannaitic times as dîjathîqî and was reinterpreted by the rabbis as donation. Finally, we compare the rabbinic dîjathîqî and the Roman donatio mortis causa.

W konsekwencji, z racji różnych ograniczeń dotyczących causadonandi, prawnicy rzymscy zmuszeni byli wykreować favor dotis, abywyraźnie rozróżnić dos i donatio.

Abstract:
Donald Tusk is one of the key players on Polish political scene. His comeback had significant impact on the Poland politic in terms of the dynamics and existing emotional aspects. Upcoming elections in 2023 and all challenges before are giving an opportunity for comprehensive analysis of the fundamentals on which Donald Tusk’s political beliefs are based on. Author of this article is focusing on aforementioned because of present economic and social situation, price increase, inflation and increasing poverty. In the beginning of the career former Prime Minister and President of the European Council was strongly following liberalism and supporting decentralization, denying that the process of planning and decision-making is concentrated within a particular political group. While being a Prime Minster, Donald Tusk had changed a bit his political attitude, taking into consideration political situation at that time and potential electorate. However he was still strongly showing his disapprove towards conception of welfare state and promoting that citizens should be proactive so their living conditions could improve.

Abstract:
Donacia provosti (Fairmaire, 1885) is a major pest of aquatic crops. It has been widely distributed in the world causing extensive damage to lotus and rice plants. Changes in gene regulation may play an important role in adaptive evolution, particularly during adaptation to feeding and living habits. However, little is known about the evolution and molecular mechanisms underlying the adaptation of D. provosti to its lifestyle and living habits. To address this question, we generated the first larval transcriptome of D. provosti. A total of 20,692 unigenes were annotated from the seven public databases and around 18,536 protein-coding genes have been predicted from the analysis of D. provosti transcriptome. About 5036 orthologous cutlers were identified among four species and 494 unique clusters were identified from D. provosti larvae including the visual perception. Furthermore, to reveal the molecular difference between D. provosti and the Colorado potato beetle Leptinotarsa decemlineata, a comparison between CDS of the two beetles was conducted and 6627 orthologous gene pairs were identified. Based on the ratio of nonsynonymous and synonymous substitutions, 93 orthologous gene pairs were found evolving under positive selection. Interestingly, our results also show that there are 4 orthologous gene pairs of the 93 gene pairs were associated with the “mTOR signaling pathway”, which are predicted to be involved in the molecular mechanism of D. provosti adaptation to the underwater environment. This study will provide us with an important scientific basis for building effective prevention and control system of the aquatic leaf beetle Donacia provosti.

"Joint multidisciplinary study of the Saint-Sauveur–Donareo fault (lower Var valley, French Riviera): a contribution to seismic hazard assessment in the urban area of Nice." Abstract:
AbstractThe lower Var valley is the only large outcropping zone of Plio-Quaternary terrains throughout the southwestern Alps. In order to assess the seismic hazard for the Alps – Ligurian basin junction, we investigated this area to provide a record of earthquakes that have recently occurred near the city of Nice. Although no historical seismicity has been indicated for the lower Var valley, our main objective was to identify traces of recent faulting and to discuss the seismogenic potential of any active faults. We organized multidisciplinary observations as a microseismic investigation (the PASIS survey), with morphotectonic mapping and imagery, and subsurface geophysical investigations. The results of the PASIS dense recording survey were disappointing, as no present-day intense microseismic activity was recorded. From the morphotectonic investigation of the lower Var valley, we revealed several morphological anomalies, such as drainage perturbations and extended linear anomalies that are unrelated to the lithology. These anomalies strike mainly NE-SW, with the major Saint-Sauveur – Donareo lineament, clearly related to faulting of the Plio-Pleistocene sedimentary series. Sub-surface geophysical investigation (electrical resistivity tomography profiling) imaged these faults in the shallow crust, and together with the microtectonic data, allow us to propose the timing of recent faulting in this area. Normal and left-lateral strike-slip faulting occurred several times during the Pliocene. From fault-slip data, the last episode of faulting was left-lateral strike-slip and was related to a NNW-SSE direction of compression. This direction of compression is consistent with the present-day state of stress and the Saint-Sauveur–Donareo fault might have been reactivated several times as a left-lateral fault during the Quaternary. At a regional scale, in the Nice fold-and-thrust belt, these data lead to a reappraisal of the NE-SW structural trends as the major potentially active fault system. We propose that the Saint-Sauveur–Donareo fault belongs to a larger system of faults that runs from near Villeneuve-Loubet to the southwest to the Vésubie valley to the north-east. The question of a structural connection between the Vésubie – Mt Férion fault, the Saint-Sauveur–Donareo fault and its possible extension offshore through the northern Ligurian margin is discussed. The Saint-Sauveur–Donareo fault shows two en-échelon segments that extend for about 8 km. Taking into account the regional seismogenic depth (about 10 km), this fault could produce M ~6 earthquakes if activated entirely during one event. Although a moderate magnitude generally yields a moderate seismic hazard, we suggest that this contribution to the local seismic risk is high, taking into account the possible shallow focal depth and the high vulnerability of Nice and the surrounding urban areas.

Abstract:
The paper discusses the persuasive and manipulative function of emotive expressions in the expose of the newly designated Prime Minister that he delivers to the members of the Parliament. The present Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk presented his on 23 November 2007. lt is a text in which the logical order seems undermined by the rhetorical order. The domination of the rhetorical over the logical aspect sometimes even leads to conflicts with the grammatical order. This is all due to the extensive use of emotive utterances in the linguistic and the textual layer of the expose. A linguistic exponent of references to emotionality are the frequently repeated lexemes „to feel", „(a) sense (of)", and a set of emotional expressions such as: joy, sadness, affection, pride or shame. These expressions are used with reference to the Prime Minister himself, but also to the emotions of the society (I contend with sadness that, I am glad that, we were all moved, but we also felt ashamed). Among the factors that make Tusk's speech emotive there are also ameliorative terms (e.g. honourable, just, service, modesty and nobility), names of values depreciating the political opponents (e.g. cynicism, opportunism), as well as syntactic constructions (frequent repetitions, antithetic clauses).

Abstract:
Po klęsce powstania listopadowego w przestrzeni wiejskiej Królestwa Polskiego pojawiły się donacje należące do rosyjskich wysokiej rangi oficerów i carskiej elity urzędniczej. Car Mikołaj I nadał im te dobra przede wszystkim za zasługi oddane podczas tłumienia polskiego powstania i wierną służbę. Jedną z największych donacji otrzymał generał piechoty Karol Wilhelm hrabia Toll, pochodzący z tzw. Bałtów (szlachty bałtyckiej). Był on jednym z najbardziej znaczących dowódców carskich w wojnie polsko-rosyjskiej w 1831 r. Otrzymał on w 1836 r. część dóbr skarbowych Uniejów o powierzchni ponad 5500 mórg.
