The terms<br />foreignization and domestication have been proposed to deal with culture-specific items found in the source <br />text. Both terms have become the focus of arguement in the recent years. The purpose of this research is to<br />identify translation procedures in translating culture specific items that are termed as foreignizing and <br />domesticating and to identify how foreignization and domestication are applied in translating culture specific<br />items. The method used is qualitative descriptive method. The data analysis shows that in translating the<br />source text, translator prefers to apply domestication. There are 74.64% data which are translated using<br />domestication and only 23.36% data are translated using foreignization. Domestication is prefered as it will<br />allow target text readers to understand the text easily. Moreover, the minority position of the source text<br />cultureof does not allow foreignization to be applied in a greater extent. Foreignization is only applied to<br />translate central culture-specific items in order to bring the local nuanse of the source text culture.</p><p>Keywords: translation, forignization, domestication, culture-specific items</p><p> </p>

Abstract As a pioneer of Chinese translation, Lin Shu groped for a way out of the dichotomy to achieve a balance between foreignization and domestication. His domesticating strategies have enjoyed considerable attention from critics, whereas his foreignization has so far been largely ignored. Mainly concentrating on his collaborative translation, Yinbian yanyu, this essay opens a window to see Lin’s translation strategy as an inevitable mixture of domestication and foreignization, and throws light on the contradictory nature of Lin, identifying him as both a defender and an opponent of Confucian ideology, and as both an inheritor and an innovator of Chinese literary and linguistic traditions.

Abstract:
Taking domestication and foreignization as the research object, this paper is meant to explore the applications of domestication and foreignization in English and Chinese film titles. Firstly, it probes into the main factors that have influence on the translation of film titles, namely ways of thinking, aesthetic concepts, business values and translators’ understandings of the cultural background of the source language. Secondly, by introducing translators like Venuti, Fu Lei, Qian Zhongshu and Eugene Nida, the paper demonstrates domestication and foreignization, and then discusses them in the film titles. Finally, the paper elaborates the reasons and examples behind domestication and foreignization and a combination of the two. According to the study, the usage of domestication or foreignization is closely connected with the linguistic characteristics and cultural background of English and Chinese. Besides, these two translation strategies reinforce each other and are closely interwoven.

ABSTRACT Translationnot only concerned with the transfer of languages butalso the cultural aspect of language. This study aims to investigate the treatment -foreignization, and domestication- and to find the pattern concerning the treatment in two movie subtitles, one from Bahasa Indonesia to English and from English to Bahasa Indonesia. This study is conducted through a qualitative approach to the theory proposed by Venuti (1995): foreignizationand domestication focusing on cultural specific items (CSIs) as categorized by Espindola (2005). The result of this study shows that foreignizationand domestication, as well as a mix treatment, are found to be employed by the translator. The translator tends to favor foreignizationand only used domestication if the CSIs already have an equivalence in the target text culture. Furthermore, a mix treatment will be applied if the CSIs are in the form of a phrase containing a general or familiar word and a specific or unfamiliar word. ABSTRAK Penerjemahan tidak hanya tentang mentransfer antar bahasa, tetapi juga tentang aspek budaya yang ada di dalam suatu bahasa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi perlakuan apa yang diberikan -foreignization dan domestication- dan pola apa yang bisa ditemukan yang berkaitan dengan perlakuan yang diberikan pada dua subtilte (Inggris ke Indonesia dan Indonesia ke Inggris) dari dua film berbeda. Pendekatan qualitatif deskriptif dipakai untuk melaksanakan penelitian ini. Teori yang digunakan adalah teori foreignization dan domestication dari Venuti (1995) yang berfokus pada culture specific items (CSIs) yang telah dikategorikan oleh Espindola (2005). Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah telah ditemukan bahwa kedua subtitle telah diberikan perlakuan foreignization, domestication, dan perlakuan campur -foreignization dan domestication-. Selanjutnya, ditemukan juga kalau dua penerjemah dari kedua subtitle tersebut lebih mengutamakan foreignization dan akan hanya menggunakan domestication apabila CSIs-nya sudah memiliki terjemahan lokal di kultur target. Yang terakhir, penerjemah akan menggunakan perlakuan campur jika CSIs dalam betuk frasa dimana terdapat kata yang familiar dan juga terdapat kata yang tidak familiar.Kata kunci: Foreignization, Domestication, Culture-Specific Items (CSIs).

The research was aimed at investigating categories of Indonesian cultural terms translated into English, explaining techniques of applied translation, and analyzing foreignization and domestication ideologies applied in the translations of Indonesian cultural terms into English in the novel Gadis Pantai that translated into The Girl from the Coast. This research was conducted through descriptive-qualitative approach. The data were collected through document analysis including content analysis and thematic analysis. The results show that there are five categories of cultural terms identified in the novel which are translated by using 16 techniques of translation, including the applications of single and double techniques of translation. In addition to foreignization and domestication ideologies of translation, it is also revealed that there is also partial foreignization and partial domestication ideologies of translation since some of the Indonesian identified cultural terms are translated through combinations of two different techniques of translation; combinations of source-language- and target-language-oriented techniques of translation. The most frequently-applied ideology of translation is domestication (82,20%), followed by foreignization (9,82%), as well as partial foreignization and partial domestication (7,98%).

The research deals with domestication and foreignization strategies in translating culture specific items in economics bilingual textbook for junior high school students. The objectives of this study was to investigate the most frequent strategies used in translating culture specific items in economics bilingual textbook for junior high school. The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data of this study were words, phrases, and clauses containing culture specific items. The data were collected through documentary technique. The technique of data analysis was interactive model. The finding of this study revealed that for domestication there were 25% cultural terms in the form of word and 46,4% in the form of phrase. While for foreignization, it was found only 21,5% in the form of word, and 7,1% in the form of phrase. It was not found the culture specific items in the form of clause both in domestication strategy and in foreignization strategy. The domestication was the dominant strategy used in translating cultural items in economics bilingual textbook. Translator’s role as a mediator of intercultural communication is viewed in the article in connection with strategies he employs in the process of translation. The author studies approach of Russian and foreign theorists of translation to the opposition of covert and overt translation. The analysis of strategies of translators who worked on the English translation of R. M. Rilke’s novel “The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge” is performed. As a result, it is concluded that translators’ pendulum movement gradually goes form translation which is at some distance from the original and is aimed at the culture and language of the translation to the translation which moves to ultimate reconstruction of structural and semantic parameters of the original.

<p>In translating brochure, a translator has to make a decision on the basis of the message and purpose. The translator is faced by two strategies of translation – foreignization and domestication. The purpose of the study is to examine how the interrelationship between cultural term translation and foreignization or domestication strategy in the cultural term translation of tourism brochure from Indonesian into English. This study used qualitative descriptive with discourse analysis strategy. The note-taking technique is used to identify and classify the data. The objects of the study are tourism brochures from Province of Special Region of Yogyakarta and Central Java in 2015. The findings show that the translation strategies used depend on the translation process. When the cultural terms are familiar, translator tends to use domestication strategy and consider the target text. Translator chooses domestication strategy because try to make tourist understand the text and produce communicative and natural translation. On the other hand, when cultural terms are foreign, translator using foreignization strategy and consider source text. Using foreignization strategy, translator tends to introduce traditional cultural term.</p>

Many claims have been made in translation studies regarding foreignization and domestication, but few empirical studies have been conducted to test those claims. Against this background, a survey was conducted to investigate the impact of foreignized and domesticated translations on three groups of Chinese readers. This study was conducted in two mainland Chinese cities (Beijing and Guangzhou) and one Taiwanese city (Douliou), including a total of 143 readers responding to two renditions of an English source text, one foreignized and one domesticated. The responses were then analyzed to determine the reader’s perception of the text in relation to the concepts of foreignization and domestication. Likewise, the responses were analyzed to determine whether the location of the study had an impact on the respondent’s answers. This paper presents findings of the study and concludes with a number of reflections on the now common concepts of “foreignization” and “domestication.”

AbstractThis paper describes the distinctive features of cultural back-translation. This term is employed here to refer to the translation of source texts into a target language from which most or all of the culture-specific elements of the source text were drawn. It makes an attempt to provide a systematic analysis of the distinctive features of this type of translation with special reference to the concepts of domestication and foreignization. The findings show that cultural back-translation is necessarily domesticating, or more precisely, re-domesticating. Re-domestication has several types: re-domestication proper, repatriation and additional domestication. Domesticating and foreignizing strategies work out differently in cultural back-translation: domestication does not mean adjustment to a different culture but restoring the original cultural context. In re-domestication the distribution of translation strategies used is different from those used in domestication and the purpose and effects of various strategies are different. The whole process from text composition to back-translation may be described as a process of double domestication. It is claimed that while domestication in general reduces readers’ processing effort by sacrificing some contextual effects, redomestication reduces processing effort and at the same time may increase contextual effects. It is concluded that the study of cultural back-translation is worthy of more serious attention and further lines of inquiry are suggested.

Abstract:
This study investigated two significant translation methods, namely foreignization and domestication, when translating children’s literature from English into Arabic. The purpose of the study is to find answers for two questions. First, do the norms regulate the translation of English children’s literature into Arabic. Second, to which method do translators opt for when translating English children’s literature into Arabic. The current paper attempts to identifying whether translating English children’s literature into Arabic is regulated by norms or not. The translator has one option when translating a text, either to domesticate or to foreignize the text based on Schleiermacher’s method of translation. Two translated versions of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland were analysed at the level of diction and discourse. A descriptive analysis of the norms was used to analyse this study and specific theoretical frameworks were used by the researchers in order to classify the selected items. The classification included ten major categories proposed by Klingberg (1986). After spotting the selected items based on the mentioned theoretical framework, each item translated in both versions was classified based on the two main methods that consist the centre of the current study i.e., domestication and foreignization Pedersen (2005). The results of the analysis show that the translations of these two Arabic versions are not systematically regulated by norms; examples of both foreignization and domestication were found in both versions. However, the analysis shows that either domestication or foreignization is more prevalent in each version.

The aim of the paper is to extend the asymmetry hypothesis (AH) to include cultural asymmetry between translation from a major into a minor language and vica versa, and to relate the AH to the domestication/foreignization dichotomy (Venuti 2005). In this paper the “minor” language is Hungarian in comparison with Russian and English as “major” languages. The asymmetry hypothesis (Klaudy 2001, 2009) assumes that explicitation and implicitation are not symmetric strategies, as translators, if they have a choice, tend to use the operations involving explicitation rather than operations involving implicitation. The paper concludes that domestication and foreignization are also asymmetric operations; while translators prefer explicitation on the linguistic level, on the cultural level translators seem to prefer domestication.

<p>Translating across language and cultural barriers is one of the most complicated tasks translator might face. This is due to the fact that text produced in one language and culture contains information about persons, institutions, habits, customers and traditions which accessible to speakers of the source language text but not understood by the speakers of another language. This article shows procedures and strategies used to overcome such problem and difficulties in translating Arabic dialect expressions into English. A central issue of this discussion is to highlight Venuti;s translation strategies foreignization and domestication that have been used in translating dialecticll expressions and culture-specific elements into English, with special reference to Janet Watson”s translation of Sana’ani Arabic dialect. Relying on the distinction of the two key cultural strategies of Domestication and Foreignization, this study reveals the way in which Arabic culture-specific elements have been portrayed in foreign context. The paper considers the validity of those cultural translation strategies and discusses their applications in different occasions. According to the obtained results, both foreignization and domestication strategies have been used to overcome the language and cultural barriers in translation of Sana'ani Arabic into English. But foreignization has been used more as the most pervasive cultural strategy. </p>

The translation is a representation of the effect of developing technology on language. Translated website or website localization with the easiness of accessibility is considered as the most efficient space for transferring the information nowadays. It certainly involves the appropriate translation strategies in order to provide reliable information required. This research aims to identify the translation strategy involved under foreignization and domestication reference in the official website localization of Ministry of Health of Republic of Indonesia, to find out the most dominant translation strategy used, and to analyze the reasons to what extent foreignization and domestication applied, by referring the classifications proposed by Venuti (2008). The source of data was taken from five (5) popular news along 2018 which were broken down into 191 data analyzed, consisting of 5 headlines in the form of phrases and sentences, contents totally written in 161 sentences, and 25 sub-contents in the form of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences. The research found that the translator used all eight (8) translation strategies under domestication and foreignization reference including literal translation, transliteration, borrowing, transference, transposition, omission, addition, and adaptation, simultaneously or separately. Literal translation becomes the most dominant translation strategy used and it can indicate that the website localization is translated into source text-oriented.

Üks instrumente, mis võib aidata tõlkijal võimalike lahenduste mitmekesisuses orienteeruda, on Ameerika tõlkeuurija Lawrence Venuti kodustava ja võõrapärastava tõlke dihhotoomia, mis seostab tõlkemeetodi valiku tõlke kultuurikontekstiga. Venuti dihhotoomiat kasutatakse tänapäeva tõlketeaduses erinevate tekstielementide tõlke uurimiseks. Nende hulgas on ka metafoor, mis on oma märkimisväärse kultuurilise varieerumise tõttu üks keerulisemaid tõlkeobjekte. Artikkel käsitleb Venuti kodustamise ja võõrapärastamise dihhotoomia kasutamise võimalust metafooride tõlkemeetodite uurimisel eesti-vene tõlkes telesaate “Pealtnägija” näitel. Ekaterina Kornilitsina, Ingrid Rummo: Lawrence Venuti’s dichotomy of domestication and foreignization as a research instrument for translation methods of metaphor in Estonian-Russian translation. Estonian-Russian media translation occupies an important place in the cultural space of Estonia, although there are only a few studies on this translation direction. One of the instruments that may help a translator to choose between possible solutions is the translation dichotomy of domestication and foreignization by the American translation theorist Lawrence Venuti. This opposition connects the choice of a translation method with the cultural context of the translated text. Venuti’s dichotomy is used in contemporary translation research to study various text elements, among them metaphor. Metaphor is considered to be one of the most complex translation objects due to its remarkable cross-cultural variation. This article discusses the use of Venuti’s dichotomy for researching the translation methods of metaphors in the Estonian-Russian translation of the TV programme “Pealtnägija” (“Spectator”). Translating religious expressions from Arabic into English seems problematic where the cultural backgrounds must be known for the translator to choose the appropriate equivalence and to help bridging the cultural gap between two cultures. As a result, this paper investigates to what extent have Venuti&rsquo;s strategies (domestication and foreignization) been successfully implemented in rendering the religious expressions in Taha Hussein&rsquo;s The Days (الأيام alʾayām) by E. H. Paxton in the translating process. It also asserts the challenges involved in translating the Islamic religious expressions in this novel. Consequently, this paper has randomly chosen, discussed, and compared 10 Islamic expressions of Hussein&rsquo;s novel with their English equivalents. In addition, two Arabic raters were consulted. Venuti&rsquo;s (2004) domestication and foreignization method was used to analyse these examples. The study concludes that the translator uses the two methods in rendering the religious expressions. The foreignization strategy was used more than domestication. Six examples have been foreignized; whereas, four of them were domesticated. The study also reveals that the use of both strategies supplements and supports the translation accuracy. Finally, the different cultural backgrounds, religions, expressions, costumes, traditions have to be the ultimate concerns of the translators in translating the Arabic religious expressions into English language.

The present study examines the representation of Ukrainian culture-specific information in Marina Lewycka’s novel A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian. Such information is encoded in lacunae and the author’s or translator’s task is to decode it using relevant translation strategies. The latter ones have been identified: 1) the strategy of domestication (equivalent or near equivalent translation); 2) the combination of domestication and foreignization (transliteration together with a near equivalent and descriptive translation, calque translation accompanied by descriptive translation); and 3) the strategy of foreignization (borrowing, transliteration alone or combined with calque translation). Graphic means such as inverted commas and italics are used to mark information as culture-specific for the reader. Ukrainian and Russian translations of the novel demonstrate that lacunae are rendered mostly with the help of the corresponding Ukrainian and Russian lexemes. It has been revealed that archaic forms can be substituted by modern ones, and both native and borrowed elements are employed. This paper also demonstrates that the procedures and means used in rendering Ukrainian culture-specific information in the source English and target Ukrainian and Russian texts aim at finding balance between the strategies of domestication and foreignization used in the presentation of culture-specific information.

This paper explores English-Kurdish translations produced by the Kurdish section of the Voice of America (VOA). It is hypothesized that such translations are marked by unnaturalness and foreignness both in terms of linguistic and cultural aspects. This feature seems to be a peculiar characteristic that sets the VOA Kurdish apart from other media outlets producing Kurdish translations. Applying Venuti’s (1995/2008) theory of foreignization and domestication and taking a translation-oriented textual analysis approach, the paper sets out to qualitatively examine a set of 15 English journalistic texts translated into Kurdish by the VOA Kurdish. The study encompasses both linguistic and cultural matrices to identify unnatural or foreignized translation occurrences, which are expected to be otherwise rendered naturally in other media outlets. The results of the study show that Kurdish translations produced by the VOA are peculiarly outlandish and orientated towards foreignization. For journalistic translations to be comprehensible by the target audience, media players ought to present their outputs, translation or otherwise, as naturally as possible. Therefore, the paper recommends that the VOA Kurdish change its tendency from foreignization to domestication.

Abstract The translator’s task is to bridge the gap between the source text (ST) and the target text (TT), to mediate between the source culture (SC) and the target culture (TC). Cultural mediation is always more than linguistic mediation: it facilitates understanding between cultures. Cultural mediators need to be extremely aware of their own cultural identity, understanding how their own culture influences perception (ethnocentric attitude). While foreignization introduces the TT audience to the ST culture as much as possible, making the foreign visible, domestication brings two languages and two cultures closer, minimizing the foreignness of the TT, conforming to the TC values, and making the unfamiliar accessible (Venuti 1995, Munday 2016). This paper investigates different ways to find the balance between these two tendencies, offering examples from literary translation.

As a cultural dialogue, translation has two main ways: foreignization or domestication. These two translation methods are also reflected in the Indonesian translations of the Tao Te Ching. This paper attempts to analyze the performance of these two translation methods in nine books of Indonesian Tao Te Ching translations, including the title of the book and the main philosophical terms (Dao, De, Ziran, Wuwei). This is a qualitative descriptive study, with literature survey as the main method of data collection. The results show that the tension between the two translation methods in the nine versions of Indonesian translations of the Tao Te Ching are different, reflecting a complex phenomenon. Translation of the title of the book, mostly used combination between foreignization and domestication strategies, kept the book name Tao Te Ching and subtitles that expressed what kind of book was the Tao Te Ching in the translator’s mind. The translations of Dao had a trend of foreignization, while the translations of De were exactly the opposite. The translations of Ziran mostly used domestication strategy, and the translations of Wuwei had a trend of foreignization in some newest translations. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian diskriptif kualitatif dengan studi literatur sebagai metode utama pengumpulan data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tensi antara kedua metode penerjemahan tersebut dalam teks-teks terjemahan Tao Te Ching berbeda satu dengan yang lain menampilkan fenomena yang cukup rumit. This paper examines the original American edition and the Indonesian translation of two The Baby-Sitters Club novels. The researcher focuses on how culture-specific items in the novels are translated. Javier Aixelá’s classification is used to identify culture-specific items, and the translator’s method is analyzed using the notions of foreignization and domestication by Lawrence Venuti. It is found that foreignization is the translator’s tendency in translating the two novels, which indicates that the translated version of these children’s novels promote cultural understanding. This research also fills a gap in translation study as little research has been done to study the relationship between foreignization and the intended audience of the translated works.

Translation of key cultural texts is a challenging area since these texts not only present intricacies of cultures but also distinguish them from each other. In spite of it, investigating the translation of key cultural texts is one of the neglected areas in the field of translation studies. In the light of Venuti’s (2008) concepts of domestication and foreignization strategies, this research examines translation of Islamic religious cultural terms in Lost in the Crowd by Al-e Ahmad from Persian into English. It also investigates possible relationship between the accuracy of translation and the choice of strategy. The findings of the study reveal that domestication was the dominant strategy opted for by translators in the translation process. Moreover, the findings show that majority of the Islamic Persian terms were rendered into English adequately but the rate of adequate translation using a domesticating strategy was much higher than foreignizing.

This study explores the intercultural transfer that takes place during the process of translating children's literature from English into Arabic. It's main purpose is to investigate how culture-specific items or expressions are dealt with when they are rendered into Arabic and find out the most preferable translation strategies that can be applied in an attempt to make the translated versions acceptable and accessible to the target audience. This study draws its data from three English novels that belong to the famous series of Narnia Chronicles which are translated into Arabic. It also states the effects of following domestication or foreignization translation strategies. It is found that there is no consistency in the used translation strategies despite the fact that the three books are translated by the same translator. The study also shows that a compromise which includes the use of domestication and foreignization translation strategies seems to be the ideal solution.

The research basically aims at identifying translation ideology in cultural term translation of novel Tuesday with Morrie: material culture written by (Albom, 1997), translated by (Widodo, 2009) into an Indonesian language text. Translation ideology classified into its ideology such as foreignization and domestication by (Venuti, 2004) and its techniques of translation theory composed by (Molina & Hurtado Albir, 2002). The research approach is a translation approach by using Newmark’s perspective. The findings show that there are 9 material cultures especially house goods and household surroundings on Tuesday with Morrie translated into an Indonesian language text. There are six techniques in the data, namely: adaptation, amplification, establish equivalent- amplification-adaptation, pure borrowings, establish equivalent, and equivalent description. The ideology of the translation in cultural term category material culture using in this novel is domestication and foreignization. Translation to TL (Bahasa) in this novel gives a shift in the cultural environment of cultural elements category material culture in Indonesia.

Resistance to Western Culture can be seen through translator’s strategy of translating novels. This research aims to analyze the translation of culture-specific items in Indonesian translated versions of Of Mice and Men, originally written by John Steinbeck. The selected translated versions belong to the work of Pramoedya Ananta Toer (2003) and Ariyantri E. Tarman (2017). The translations of culture-specific items are analyzed under Transnational American Studies paradigm to find out the dominant translation principle applied in both translated versions and the results are discussed from the perspective of postcolonial translation studies. From the data, it is found out that the domestication principle is more dominant than foreignization strategy. Analyzed from postcolonial translation studies, the tendency to use the domestication principle in translated novels show the efforts of the target culture to fight against Western culture as the source culture. Although both Indonesian versions of Of Mice and Men mostly apply the domestication principle, the recent translated version (T2) shows an increase in the use of foreignization principle in which English loanwords are frequently used. From a postcolonial translation studies’ perspective, it can be concluded that target culture is against Western culture; however, the signs of cultural imperialism, especially linguistic imperialism, have grown in the recent years.

Indonesian literature is rich with cultural nuance expressed by an author in his/her works. Being translated into world lingua franca would make the literary work read by more people, but surely, it is challenging, as a translator must apply the most appropriate translation strategies. Senyum Karyamin is one of Indonesian literary works that represent local culture and has been translated into English. Based on the analysis, in translating 122 Javanese cultural lexicons in Senyum Karyamin, a translator applied 7 strategies, namely: transference (34 data, 27.87%), omission (9 data, 7.37%), descriptive equivalence (19 data, 15.58%), cultural equivalence (25 data, 20.51%), generic word (29 data, 23.78%), additional explanation (3 data, 2,.47%), and footnote (3 data, 2.47%). The orientations of translation ideology were foreignization (translating 59 data – 48.39%) and domestication (translating 63 data – 61.51%). It can be concluded that the preservation of Javanese cultural lexicon is not optimally executed by the translator because the domestication slightly dominates the foreignization. However, the wide variety of applied translation strategies shows that translation practice is dynamic.

Domestication as a translation strategy has been inevitable in translation either consciously or unconsciously, even though it has been questioned by the opposite regime; foreignization for years. This comparative analysis examined the strategies of domestication applied by A. P. Gunarathne in the Sinhala translation of ‘The Village in the Jungle’ and it has been found out that wide varied strategies within the theory of domestication have been employed in translating this novel into the Sinhala language. Some of them are usual strategies whereas some are unique for this work. The present study further concludes that some kind of a domestication involves in every translation and this translation strategy still remains as an effective and well-intentioned strategy for translators to do effective translations while finding out that the theory of domestication has also been expanded into some micro-level strategies by paying much attention for the local culture of the target language in this translation.

Abstract The present paper deals with culture-specific items as a translational problem. It is based on two Polish translations of four Swedish books from the famous detective series by Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö. The aim of the study is to analyze some of the practices employed by two Polish translators against the translation methods proposed by Newmark (1988), Svane (2002) and Ingo (2009). For this purpose a number of highly specific cultural items have been collected and the methods applied by translators have been identified. The analysis has shown a big difference between translators in dealing with culture-specific items. The first translator, Maria Olszańska, adopts such translation methods as calque translation, hyperonym, functional equivalent, paraphrase and omission. The other translator, Halina Thylwe, prefers transference and calque translation combined with additional explanations, either in the main part of the text or in footnotes. The methods employed by both translators are a result of choosing between global translation strategies domestication and foreignization (Venuti 1995). Domestication, adopted in the older translations, minimizes the strangeness of the Swedish text to the Polish readers, whereas foreignization in the newer translations retains the foreignness of the original.

This research was to reconfirm Anderson’s theory (and praxis) of translation, i.e., transfer of language and culture from one to another with clarity, sensitivity, and high artistry. The analytical method used the application of diverse translation strategies to achieve pragmatic equivalence, i.e., the use of footnotes and foreignization-domestication principles. To consolidate the discussion, this research examined closely Anderson’s English translation of part of Titie Said’s “Bidadari” in his analysis of the novel and his translation of Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s short story “Nyonya Dokter Hewan Suharko”. The results indicate that what appears in his translation work is a broad range of discourses that help expound foreign-language (in this case English) intelligibility from the translating (Indonesian) one. His treatment of domesticating and the foreignizing translation is critically done owing to his gift of interests, passion, and persistence in the subject.

Abstract: The research aims to describe translation ideology analysis of proper noun and todescribe the types of translation ideology which occur in the novel Pride and Prejudice. Themethod used in the research is a qualitative comparative approach by comparing the translation ofproper nouns in Source Language and Target Language. The results of the analysis show that thetranslator used foreignization ideology to transfer the meaning of the source text. The tendency isseen in the title of the text where the translator keeps the original title Pride and Prejudice insteadof transferring into Harga Diri dan Prasangka. The type of translation ideologies occur in thenovel are foreignization in which the translator stays faithful to the source language by preservingMr. Darcy into Mr. Darcy, and domestication in which the translator stays closer to the targetlanguage by transforming The Bennets into Keluarga Bennet.Key Words: Translation; Translation Ideology; Proper Noun; Novel

Abstract:
This paper aims to identify strategies for translating self-names (proper nouns) and ideological tendencies in translation works. The data sources used were the translated novel entitled Binatangisme (translated by Mahbub Djunaidi) as the source text and the English novel entitled Animal Farm by George Orwell as the source text. This research used the theory designed by Davies (2003) to identify translation strategies and ideological tendencies. According to Davies, there are seven translation strategies, namely preservation, addition, localization, omission, globalization, transformation and creation. The result obtained is that the translated version tends to domestication ideology. Of the 15 data analyzed, Mahbub Djunaidi's translated version has 46.67% tendencies of domestication ideology and 40% tendencies of foreignization ideology (the number is not 100% because some data using omission are considered neutral and not counted).

Abstract:
Ideology in the translation process is important in deciding towards what kind of direction the translation will go. If the primary purpose of the translation is to promote the culture, it is considered adequate to choose the foreignization over the domestication as the ideology of the translation when it comes to the translation of culture-specific items. However, deciding what ideology should be used in the translation process is complicated. There are many factors that can affect the ideology of a translation. Both ideologies can lead to totally different results of the accuracy of the meaning of the translations. This research was content analysis of Historical Book Discover Bengkulu The Land of Rafflesia. This research show that there are two ideologies that appeared in this translation such as foregnization ideology where oriented to source language and domestication ideology where oriented to target language.

Abstract:
This article questions the often all-too-readily adduced arguments and methodologies of translation theory with reference to the English translations of Orhan Pamuk's novel The Black Book as exemplary case studies. It argues that domestication and foreignization are problematic as linguistic categories. It then seeks to rework such intuitively forceful terms for a sociology of translation, suggesting that they regain their coherence when directed towards questions of reception. The reception of The Black Book in English translation has been dominated by domesticating readings that minimize or neglect Pamuk's engagement with local history in favour of stock categorizations of the novel in terms of postmodernism. Against such readings, a ‘foreignizing reading strategy’ is proposed, one that seeks to restore to interpretation something of Pamuk's engagement with the local, especially his treatment of Sufism and Hurufism. Translation theory, it is urged, can be more effectively and universally applied in literary studies when directed towards literary sociology rather than linguistic comparison.

The comparative analysis of the English names aims to find out if the cultural gap between the source and the target cultures has been diminishing over the years. The study also highlights the role of the chronotope that gives the work, one of the most frequently translated Slovenian texts, a distinctive cultural character.

Abstract:
The present paper investigates Arabic lexical borrowings in terms of the new signifieds accrued in the receptor language (English) drawing on Venuti’s (1998) notions of ‘domestication’ and ‘foreignization’. The paper shows that SL meanings are at loggerheads with those in the receptor language. The paper argues that lexical borrowings are consequence of cultural transfer in intercultural communication situations and they can be a double-edged sword. Whilst the shift from the original meaning(s) via borrowing may be considered a gain for the receptor language, it can do injustice to the source language.

In the translation of cultural words, Domestication and Foreignization strategy is a kind of translation strategy that is widely applied by translators. The tendency to use one of these strategies in a translation work can be identified through the analysis of translation techniques. This article discusses the translation strategy of cultural words in Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk which had translated into Japanese, Parukku Mura no Odoriko. Through the identification and analysis of translation techniques, it is known that the cultural words in Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk is translated into Japanese using several techniques: (1) borrowing, (2) paraphrase, (3) using cultural words which equivalence in target language, (4) using generic words, (5) using neutral words . From the results of calculating the amount of usage of each technique, it is known that the borrowing and paraphrase is the most widely used techniques, so it can be concluded that in this translation used the strategy of foreignization. Foreignization is the strategy that focuses on the source text, as an interpreter attempt to maintain the concept of culture As well as the socio-cultural values of Javanese society as in the original novel. The fact raises the assumption that Parukku Mura no Odoriko lacks the tastes of readers in Japan because of the many foreign cultural concepts in the novel thus making the distance between the reader and the translation product itself.

Abstract:
Aim. The study aimed at establishing whether there are any significant differences between the two translations of the same novels: one published unofficially and anonymously on the Internet, and the other published officially by the publisher. The elements taken into consideration in the analysis were: the culture-bound elements, the vulgar terms, and syntactic calques. Methods. The theoretical part of the research is based on the refraction theory by A. Lefevere (1992), according to whom translation is a process regulated by a system in which it functions. In opposition to the regulated translational activity stands unofficial Internet translation. The comparative analysis of the translations was further developed with the application the ‘foreignisation’and domestication dichotomy proposed by L. Venuti (1995). Results and conclusion. The results of the study imply that there are significant differences between the official and unofficial translations; the official translations aim at domesticating techniques, whereas the unofficial translations are more likely to apply ‘foreignising’ techniques, even at the cost of breaking cultural values of the target culture. Cognitive value. The Internet has become an inseparable part of modern people’s daily life, yet Internet activities are still not regulated and researched to such a degree as ‘real world’ ones. The study aims at showing differences between the Internet and official translation, however, it is not able to answer the question regarding the roots of these differences. Further inquiries would be necessary in this case – if even possible.
