Abstract:
Abstract One of the key issues in recent translation theories has been on whether translation should domesticate or foreignize the source text. Venuti (1995) defines domesticating translation as a replacement of the linguistic and cultural difference of the foreign text with a text that is intelligible to the target-language reader. Foreignizing translation is defined as a translation that indicates the linguistic and cultural differences of the text by disrupting the cultural codes that prevail in the target language. Other scholars, like Tymoczko (1999), criticise this dichotomy by pointing out that a translation may be radically oriented to the source text in some respects, but depart radically from the source text in other respects, thus denying the existence of the single polarity that describes the orientation of a translation. For my research I have chosen five English translations of Lev Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, covering over a century of the history of translations into English: Dole (1886), Garnett (1901), Maude (1918), Edmonds (1954) and Pevear and Volokhonsky (2000). My main objective has been to analyse the relationship between earlier and later translations. Since modern English language readers are more familiar with Russian language, literature and culture as well as with Tolstoy’s works than the 19th century readers were, theoretically speaking, translating Tolstoy in 2000 should be easier than it was in 1886. In reality each translator still had to choose between the adequate representation of Tolstoy’s text and the acceptability of their translation for their contemporary English speaking audiences (the terms described in Toury 1995) on a sliding scale between audience and text. In a way, with the higher development of the art and scholarship of translation, the expectations of readers and critics grow, and adequate representation of a text in a different language becomes more challenging. My hypothesis is that literary translation evolves as an exploration of deeper and deeper layers of the source text. In the present thesis I try to show how the history of translation of Anna Karenina into English reflects these different stages of evolution.

Abstract:
Sherman Alexie's work revolves around Native Americans—Native Americans who deal with problems such as poverty, alcoholism, transgenerational trauma, modern life, ethnic stereotyping, and institutionalized racism. His voice is thought-provoking, poignant, destabilizing, and also, absolutely funny. His unique approach to heavy political matters offers us a different way of resistance in which people laugh through their tears and maybe change how they react to the issues surrounding themselves. In this thesis, I offer an analysis of who Sherman Alexie is as an author in the United States. I also look into his importance for Turkey in terms of our issues of racism and our understanding of political humour, in hopes of influencing other destabilizing works through his translations. Later, I discuss how he is portrayed in the Turkish literary system by examining two of his translated books, The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven (Çılgın Atı Düşlemek) and Reservation Blues (Kızılderiliye Yer Yok), through Lawrence Venuti's views on the foreignization and domestication methods in The Translator’s Invisibility: A History of Translation. Subsequently, I present my translation of "Lawyer's League", "Can I Get a Witness?", "Do Not Go Gentle" and "Flight Patterns" from Ten Little Indians as an alternative translation method. Finally, I analyse the foreignization method in relation to translating Sherman Alexie, before explaining my translation choices.

Abstract:
The approach to translating multilingual texts has long been a subject of debate among scholars and translators, sparking discussions on which translational choices and strategies should be employed. An additional challenge occurs when a minority language in a multilingual (or rather, heterolingual) text becomes the target language. In these circumstances, the translator faces the dilemma of choosing how to preserve the Otherness that the non-dominant language conveys in the first text without overly manipulating it or stripping it of its nature. My analysis focuses on the challenges of translating Black Madonna (1982), a novel by prolific Italian-Canadian writer Frank Paci. Like many Italian-Canadian authors, the vast majority of Paci’s novels feature untranslated Italian terms and dialogues throughout the text. The first chapter of this thesis provides an introduction to the author and the basic concepts around which I structure my discourse, such as immigrant writing and the so-called ‘linguistic stones’ (untranslated terms). The section that follows features an overview of the most prominent Italian-Canadian plurilingual writers, as well as a brief analysis of a few selected works with a special focus on Scarpe Italiane (2007), the only novel by Paci to ever be translated into Italian. The research moves on to theories of translation, discussing various strategies and solutions proposed by scholars involved in the debate. The following chapter consists of a commentary in which I support a balance of foreignization and domestication by converting Italian terms into the appropriate regional dialect, since dialect is a prominent element in Paci’s novels. Finally, in the last section, I provide my translation of the novel into Italian.

Abstract:
The loss in translation between languages has long been debated, and a current issue within Translation Studies is that of the cultural aspect. Using two opposing concepts by Lawrence Venuti; domestication that is used to assimilate the source culture into the target culture, and foreignization that is used to preserve and highlight the foreign culture in the target text, this paper examines how culture is transferred in literary translation between English and Swedish. In order to establish which strategies are used, data consisting of 30 passages from the American novel Dead Until Dark (2001), and the corresponding passages in two different Swedish translations of it, is analysed linguistically. While the first translation is found to show no marked preference for either strategy, the second translation uses domestication thrice as often as foreignization. However, both translations use domestication in 9 out of 10 examples in the category ‘Figurative use of language’, which suggests a marked difficulty in preserving the source culture while translating metaphorical language. The analysis also shows a difference in the way the strategies are employed, suggesting a further division of the strategies into ‘passive’ and ‘active’. The author calls for further research on the effect of such a division.

Abstract:
This essay discusses the subject of translating a French book about the French cuisine into Swedish. The author is Gérard Depardieu, a famous French actor with a keen interest in the French culinary art and culture. The book is about simple, classic, French cooking. While translating, we had some difficulties translating some cultural expressions or words that do not have an equivalence in Swedish, and therefore we had to find another solution than literal translation that would allow us to retain the cultural sense. To our help, we used the theories of Jean-Paul Vinay and Jean Darbelnet who discuss equivalence, explication, modulation and adaptation, which are different methods of translating a foreign culture to a target language. We also used the expressions foreignization (where you break target conventions by retaining a foreign cultural element in the original way) and domestication (where you translate the foreign element to something that exists in the target culture to minimize the strangeness). Our goal was to adapt the translated text to a Swedish reader, but at the same time keep as much of the French culture and Depardieu's style as possible.

Este trabalho apresenta uma tradução crítica da narrativa Die Reisebegegnung (O encontro de viagem), da escritora alemã Anna Seghers. Através dessa tradução, discute-se o ato de traduzir, questionando-se o modelo de tradução predominante no mercado editorial, que exige textos fluentes, nos quais se apagam as marcas de estrangeiridade. Esta dissertação propõe uma alternativa ao modelo: destacar o caráter estrangeiro da obra em vez de tentar apagá-lo, proporcionando ao leitor uma experiência com o texto estrangeiro que vá além do conteúdo e chamando sua atenção para questões de linguagem. Isso confere maior espaço e visibilidade para o trabalho criativo do tradutor, explícito aqui por meio do aparato crítico que acompanha a tradução. Essa alternativa se sustenta principalmente nas ideias de Friedrich Schleiermacher, Lawrence Venuti e Antoine Berman, que defendem a tradução chamada de estrangeirizadora, isto é, aquela que abre e garante espaço para o estranho (estrangeiro, fremd) no texto de chegada.
This work presents a critical translation of the narrative Die Reisebegegnung (The travel encounter), by the German writer Anna Seghers. Through this translation, the act of translating is discussed, questioning the translation model predominant in the publishing market, which requires fluent texts and in which the foreignness marks become extinguished. This dissertation proposes an alternative to the model: highlighting the foreign aspect of the work instead of trying to delete it, providing the reader with an experience of the foreign text that goes beyond the content and drawing his/her attention to language issues. This procedure gives more room and visibility to the creative work of the translator, made explicit here through the critical apparatus following the translation. Such an alternative is supported mainly by the ideas of Friedrich Schleiermacher, Lawrence Venuti and Antoine Berman, who defend the so-called foreignizing translation, i.e., the one that makes and warrants room for the strange (foreign, fremd) in the target text.

Bahia, Haiti, Trinidad (1976), do autor alemão Hubert Fichte, obra ainda inédita no Brasil. O objetivo consiste em propor uma atitude recriadora da escrita fichteana sob a perspectiva diferenciada de quem traduz, mantendo as características do texto-fonte e a marca poética na análise etnográfica, e pela adoção de uma atitude tradutória estrangeirizante, trazer visibilidade para o tradutor. Além disso, a tradução serve como um exercício de análise e crítica da obra, e, por meio de escolhas e justificativas de decisões tradutórias, são revelados os bastidores do processo de tradução.
This master thesis presents a commented translation of Bahia, a chapter of Xangô. As religiões afro-americanas. Bahia. Haiti. Trinidad (1976) by the German author Hubert Fichte a work still unpublished in Brazil. The aim of this thesis is to propose a recreative attitude of the fichtean writing under a differing perspective of the individual who translates, maintaining not only the characteristics of the source-text but also the poetic features in the ethnographic analysis. The work also intends to provide visibility to the translator by adopting a foreign translating posture. In addition, translation itself serves as an exercise of analysis and critique of the work, and through choices and justifications of translating decisions, the underlying efforts of the translation process is revealed.

In order to examine how children's literature might be translated, two different English translations of two Swedish picture books have been analyzed. The original Swedish books are Rävjakten and Pannkakstårtan by Sven Nordqvist. Rävjakten was translated as The Fox Hunt in 1988 and as The Fox Hunt in 2000. Pannkakstårtan was translated as Pancake Pie in 1985 and as The Birthday Cake in 1999. Literary translation in general, specific translation issues for children's literature, and trends in international English style have been considered. Analysis of the four texts has been made, with consideration given to the following areas: changes in illustrations, layout, or format; text changes; lexical choices; and retention, deletion, or modification of names and culturally specific references. The analysis revealed that the following tendencies were true for the later translations: foreignization of the text, word-for-word translation of the text, and a neutral international English variety.

O principal objetivo deste trabalho é verificar quantitativamente a chamada hipótese da retradução de Berman (1990), através do Método das Modalidades de Tradução (MMT), elaborado por Aubert (1977, 1998), derivado do modelo pedagógico de procedimentos técnicos da tradução de Vinay e Darbelnet (1958), num estudo de caso de duas traduções para a língua inglesa do livro A Paixão Segundo G. H., escrito por Clarice Lispector em 1964, traduzido por Ronald W. de Sousa, em 1988 e retraduzido por Idra Novey, em 2012. A fundamentação teórica discorre sobre os conceitos de domesticação e estrangeirização, segundo Venuti, e sobre o percurso da retradução, desde 1990 até nossos dias. Também são comentados a vida e a arte de Clarice Lispector, bem como seus dois tradutores. Os trabalhos de Hélène Cixous e Benjamin Moser são relacionados aos possíveis motivos para a retradução. O MMT é apresentado e explicado. A comparação intuitiva sugeriu que as duas traduções pareciam muito literais, com algumas diferenças possivelmente devidas à subjetividade dos tradutores e exigências dos editores. Entretanto, o MMT, em uma amostra de 542 palavras, mostrou que a quantidade de domesticação na tradução foi estatisticamente mais alta do que na retradução, não rejeitando, portanto a hipótese de Berman.
This dissertation aims to quantitatively verify Bermans hypothesis of retranslation by describing and applying Auberts (1977, 1989) Method of Modalities of Translation (MMT), derived from Vinay and Darbelnets pedagogical model of technical procedures of translation (1958), in a case study of two English translations of The Passion According to G.H., by Clarice Lispector. The original was written in 1964, the first translation was made in 1988 by Ronald W. de Sousa, and the retranslation in 2012 by Idra Novey. The theoretical framework presents Venutis concepts of domestication and foreignization and the history of ideas on retranslation, from 1990 to the present. Clarice Lispector, the woman, and the writer, as well as its translators are described and commented on. Hélène Cixous and Benjamin Mosers works are presented as related to the motives of the retranslation. The Method (MMT) is presented and explained. Both translations seemed very literal with some differences possibly due to the translators subjectivity and demands of the editors. However, in a sample of 542 words the amount of domestication in the translation was statistically higher than in the retranslation and therefore in line with Bermans hypothesis.

Abstract:
This thesis analyzes Ying Chen's Les Lettres Chinoises through the lenses of literary translation, migrant writing and epistolary genres, as well as through critical theory of Chen's poetics in order to inform a translation of said novel from French into English. This theoretical groundwork is accompanied by analysis of the process of the translation, including specifications, methods used, and justifications for translation decisions. Les Lettres Chinoises is Ying Chen's second novel, written in French rather than her native Chinese language. Spanning a fifty-seven letter exchange between Shanghai and Montreal, Chen's choice to write in language other than her first, as well as the themes presented in the novel such as emigration, exile, identity, and Otherness, render Chen's novel ideal for critical discussion in the domain of migrant writing theory. Translating any exophonic text presents particular challenges for the translator and the analysis of these difficulties enrich both the translation as well as an understanding of the migrant writing genre. Inherent in these challenges is negotiating transparency (foreignization versus domestication) in the translation of cultural traces that speak of other traditions and realities. Chen's Les Lettres Chinoises is unique among migrant texts however, because she privileges voice through the use of the epistolary genre, a form that bespeaks a 19th century Western tradition. Her choice of this genre provides insight into the literary and cultural traditions that shaped her writing and encourage the reader as well as the translator to consider, or rather reconsider, the novel's intent. Les Lettres Chinoises contributes to the migrant and epistolary genres, redefining and enhancing each respectively. Chen's prerogatives as viewed through these lenses are varied: through her three letter-writing characters she reenacts literal and existential exile, creates a space of enunciation through letter writing, all while defining her own poetic style in another language. I negotiated these prerogatives in the translation by creating three subtly distinct and evolving voices for each of the characters. I used existing translations of Chen's works to create consistency in style and accuracy. Included as well are excerpts from my final translation.

Abstract:
This study investigates indirect translations translated from Bengali source texts to Swedish target texts via English intermediary texts by comparing Pedersen’s (2011) Extralinguistic Cultural References in coupled pairs from all three languages. The purpose of this study is to examine how indirect translations differ from direct translations and to discern whether there are specific translation strategies that translators use when transferring Extralinguistic Cultural References (ECRs) from a third language. The results were analyzed with a perspective based on translation norms, previous research into indirect translation, and the concept of foreignization/domestication in mind. The results show that an indirect translation can be closer to the original source text than the intermediary text it was based on in the first place. This was demonstrated with the Swedish TTs displaying more source-oriented transfer strategies compared to the English ITs, which displayed a higher amount of target-oriented strategies used by the translators. An unexpected finding was noted in the analysis material, namely that misunderstandings or deviations present in the ITs were not necessarily transferred to the TTs, which goes against previous research into indirect translations (cf. Dollerup 2000; Tegelberg 2011; Ringmar 2016). This supports similar results as found in Adler (2016) and Hekkanen (2014). In conclusion, the results suggest that the tendency of high-prestige literature resulting in adequate translations would be stronger than the tendency of indirect translations resulting in acceptable translations in the context of the Swedish target system. The source-oriented strategies in the TTs could also be seen as resistancy to target norms by the translators to create foreignizing translations.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to examine translation norms, strategies and solutions in chapter XIII Westbottom and Lapland in The Further Adventures of Nils (Lagerlöf, 1911). In the foreword to the English translation of the novel, the translator writes that some of the purely geographical matter has been eliminated in the translation, and that cuts have been made where the descriptive matter is only of local interest. This statement raised questions about the intended readerships and the purposes of the original novel and the translation, respectively. Are these the same in the two texts, or are they different? Further questions were raised regarding the initial norm of the translator. Has she aimed for domestication or foreignization in the text? In this paper, two domains were chosen as fields of study: proper nouns and the lexical fields of water, heights and flat land. Through an analysis of coupled pairs from the chosen domains, it was concluded that the translator’s initial norm was foreignization, but that there are also many examples of domestication in the text. It was also shown that while the original novel has two clearly stated purposes, namely of being a geography book for Swedish school children as well as a novel with high literary standards, the educational purpose is not as pronounced in the translation. However, the inclusion of a Table of Pronunciation displayed an educational addition to the translation, which is not part of the original novel. Detta arbete utgörs av en skönlitterär översättning från engelska till svenska med tillhörande kommentar. Texten som har översatts är skräcknovellen The Summer People av den amerikanska författaren Shirley Jackson (1916–1965). En källtextnära översättningsprincip upprättades för översättningsarbetet baserat på teorier om skopos, polysystemteori samt domesticering/exotisering. Översättningskommentaren innehåller en redogörelse för de översättningsstrategier som tillämpats vad gäller överföring av källtextens kultur- och tidsspecifika referenser, talspråksmarkörer och stilistiska drag. Det utfördes även en mindre specialundersökning bestående av en kvalitativ jämförelse mellan svenska översättningar av Shirley Jacksons romaner utförda av Inger Edelfeldt och Torkel Franzén. Specialundersökningen visade att Edelfeldt tog sig något större friheter med texten, och framför allt Franzéns översättning hade stora likheter med den aktuella översättningen av The Summer People.
This paper consists of a commented translation of literary fiction from English to Swedish. The translated text is a short story of the horror genre called The Summer People by the American author Shirley Jackson (1916–1965). A source text-oriented translation principle was established for the translation task based on theories such as skopos, polysystem theory and domestication/foreignization. The commentary contains an account for the translational strategies that were applied regarding transfer of culture- and period-specific references, indications of spoken language, and literary style in the source text. An additional minor study was also carried out, consisting of a qualitative comparison between translations of Shirley Jackson’s novels executed by Inger Edelfeldt and Torkel Franzén. The additional study showed that Edelfeldt made slightly more alterations of the text, and Franzén’s translation in particular showed striking similarities to the current translation of The Summer People.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the reception of Johann Joachim Winckelmann in Italian art scholarship, 1755-1834. Winckelmann posed a problem: he was a presence in Italy that could not be ignored, yet the views he expounded were Italophobic and contentious to an Italian readership. In light of this dilemma, the research question asked is how did Italian art scholarship respond to Winckelmann in this period and why did it respond in that way. The core argument advanced is that there were two opposing reactions to Winckelmann, both of which were motivated by nationalism. On the one hand, Italian art scholars presented Winckelmann, his works, and his views as less attractive to an Italian readership than they would otherwise have appeared and, on the other hand, they presented him as more attractive. Through these reactions – termed foreignization and domestication respectively – art scholarship either defended against and ostracized Winckelmann or, when presented as less offensive, welcomed and embraced him amongst Italians. Thus this thesis argues that both reactions demonstrate a nationalistic attempt to portray Winckelmann in the manner most auspicious to the yet-to-be-united peninsula. In order to explore this response to the German scholar, the thesis centres on three media: translations, art literature, and artistic journalism. Both foreignization and domestication are evident throughout the sources analysed, yet there is a predominance of domestication, achieved through a variety of methods. This investigation adds to existing literature by examining the previously overlooked dilemma that Winckelmann posed. Moreover, employing the original conceptual framework of foreignization and domestication allows for a re-evaluation of how the art scholarship of the period engaged with the German scholar. Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to carry out a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the semantic and pragmatic aspects of a translation from Spanish into Swedish. Taking advantage our extensive knowledge of the local area we selected a book about the cultural heritage of Seville. Owing to the differences in the two cultures we expected to find numerous foreign cultural words – that we call culturemes – throughout the book that have no direct equivalence in Swedish. Our intention was to detect them and describe by means of several examples the translation techniques we used in order to adapt the target text to the Swedish reader. At the end we also carried out a quantitative analysis of the 252 culturemes we found, with a table showing which translation techniques dominate, and the frequency of occurrence of other techniques. We aimed to transfer as many culturemes as possible in order to give the target text some local color. This is the strategy called foreignization, recommended by Venuti. Throughout the translation and analysis process we concluded that the translator must have a sound linguistic and cultural knowledge of both the source and target languages in order to successfully resolve cultural differences and create an idiomatic and pragmatic translation.

El presente trabajo examina las estrategias traductoras utilizadas en la traslación al español de los topónimos y los conceptos referentes al patrimonio cultural y la naturaleza, es decir, los culturemas del relato sueco El maravilloso viaje de Nils Holgersson a través de Suecia escrito por Selma Lagerlöf. Dos traducciones surgidas en diferentes contextos sociohistóricos en España son contrastadas con el objetivo de determinar de qué manera divergen. Los resultados muestran que la primera traducción en gran medida adapta los conceptos específicos para Suecia al ambiente sociohistórico y natural reconocibles para el lector español. La segunda traducción, al contrario, lleva al lector hispanohablante conceptos que le podrían resultar exóticos. Los topónimos son adoptados sin grandes modificaciones. Aun así, ninguno de los traductores se ajusta a seguir una línea coherente de traducción, el hecho que se puede explicar por la pertenencia del relato al género de la literatura juvenil cuyos objetivos son tanto educar como entretener.
The present study examines the patterns used in the translation into Spanish of some Swedish place names and cultural and natural characteristics in Selma Lagerlöf’s novel The wonderful adventures of Nils. Two translations that emerged in different socio-historical contexts in Spain are compared in order to determine how they diverge. The results show that the first translation largely adapts the Sweden-specific concepts to the notions that are recognizable by the Spanish reader. The second translation, on the contrary, offers to a greater extent culture-specific phenomena to its readers. Place names are mainly adopted without modifications. Despite this, both translators rather use a strategy mix in order to adjust the text to its juvenile audience and to preserve both the didactic and the entertaining values of the Swedish text.

This research aims to investigate the strategic variation in the translations of idiomatic expressions in the company webpages of both Taiwan and China because idiomatic expressions distinctive to the source culture often cause some inter-cultural communication barriers in the translation process. The author has collected about 200 entries of idiomatic expressions from 40 company webpages in Taiwan and China for analysis based on the criteria of three strategies, including literal translation, paraphrase and omission. The first one is classified as the foreignizaiton strategy, and the latter two as the domestication strategy. The mixed method of quantitative and qualitative analyses is adopted, with the former to identify the variation in the strategies of translating two types of idiomatic expressions including Chengyu and four-character phrases (FCPs), and the latter employed to explore the implications of the findings within the theoretical framework of Venuti’s foreignizaiton and domestication strategies, and Lefevere’s concepts of translation as manipulation and rewriting. The findings indicate that in the translations of four-character phrases, the translators from China tend to use the literal translation strategy, but the translators from Taiwan tend to use the paraphrase strategy. This is probably due to a higher level of westernization in Taiwan than in China. Furthermore, in the translations of Chengyus, the translators from both Taiwan and China similarly prefer the strategy of paraphrase that shows a similar high frequency. The inference is that culturally-bound Chengyus are difficult to find equivalents in the Western culture and their literal translations often lead to mistranslations and misunderstanding. However, the translations of all idiomatic expression in both Taiwan and China show the preferable tendency of domestication with the former higher than the latter. This phenomenon can be attributed to China’s resistance against being Westernized through translation. Overall, the findings of this research have supported the argument of translation as rewriting because the translators often have to rewrite the source text in response to the current ideological trend within the constraints of socio-cultural norms, patrons and others.

In the Translation Science, the Functional Theories of Translation and its branch, Skopos Theory are both widely valued. Focusing on the phatic communication instances found in Kakuta Mitsuyo''s “Woman on the other shore”, a Japanese work, I applied Skopos Theory & the derived methods for determining whether it is domestication or foreignization that can be seen more used in its translated works. In the past decades, numerous linguistic researches have been built upon the Functional Translation Theory which can be used in studying topics of what is the function of a specific text type? and to what extent is the correlation existed between the translation purpose and the translation methods?…etc. It is widely believed that, before translators can achieve the proper function and the purpose, one should be able to master two major translation strategies of domestication and foreignization. In this research, I narrowed down the studying object to only the phatic communication instances. This is for to take a closer look at the scenarios of when a Japanese novel is being translated into two languages, will the translation strategy of domestication be commonly used? or the foreignization is used more? The research methods used in conducting this research are Skopos Theory and Fumiko Fujinami''s List of Method of Translation.

While many high school English instructors in the United States teach world literature in translation, few of them explicitly present the literature as translated. High school English students would benefit from learning more about the linguistic origins of the world literature they read. This awareness would increase student understanding of the source culture and benefit their language skills. Various translation theorists have suggested methods to teach translational awareness, but few have offered advice on the type of translation to select. In my research, I examined the question of whether students would derive more cultural knowledge, and specifically language-related knowledge, by reading domesticated or foreignized translations. To explore this question, I created two different English translations of the same French literary texts and presented them to several classes of U.S. American high school students. One translation (Version A) was intended to be a domesticated version and the other (Version B) was deliberately foreignized. Classes read two versions of either Anna Gavalda’s short story “Happy Meal” or of a selection from Joseph Zobel’s novel La Rue Cases-Nègres. Following the reading, they completed a series of multiple-choice and free-response questions. Responses to the readings indicated that students found the foreignized translations more “sophisticated” but did not consistently demonstrate a greater cultural understanding as a result. The results failed to prove one translation method more effective than the other, but they did suggest limitations to Lawrence Venuti’s foreignization approach.

This study examines and discovers the translation strategies as employed in the Sesotho sa Leboa translation of Mandela's Long Walk to Freedom. Mandela's Long Walk to Freedom was published in 1995 and was translated into Sesotho sa Leboa by S M Serudu in 2001. The Sesotho sa Leboa translation of the life history of Mandela, Leetotelele go ya Tokologong (Long Walk to Freedom) is one of the four completed translations to date that form part of the assignment to translate the original text into the official languages of South Africa. The aim of this study is to investigate the translation strategies used to transfer linguistic and cultural items in the translation of Mandela's autobiography. The study is mainly qualitative and examines the strategies employed by Serudu. For data collection, the source and target texts of Mandela's Long Walk to Freedom as well as the semi-structured face-to-face interviews with four translators into Sesotho sa Leboa, isiZulu, isiXhosa and Afrikaans were used. The study is based on the Descriptive Translation Studies Theory, Bassnett and Lefevere's "cultural turn" as well as the domestication and foreignization strategies. In this case, it investigates if Serudu has domesticated and/or foreignized his translation. The findings revealed that Serudu domesticated his translation by using metaphors, similes, personification, euphemism, hyperbole, proverbs, idioms and the use of descriptive words. Foreignization was also found when the translator dealt with the borrowing and loaning of words where most of the concepts were transferred, Sotholised, retained and transferred, as they were, especially culture specific items.
