Abstract:
The avian circadian system is composed of multiple inputs, oscillators and outputs. Among its oscillators is a hypothalamic structure presumed to be homologous to the primary circadian pacemaker in mammals, the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). The SCN in avian species is poorly defined: two structures in the hypothalamus, the medial SCN (mSCN) and visual SCN (vSCN), have been referred to in the literature as the SCN. The present studies were designed to answer one central question: where is the avian homolog to the mammalian SCN? Uptake of 2-[14C]-deoxyglucose (2DG), an indicator of glucose metabolism, fluctuates in the mSCN and vSCN in both a daily and circadian manner. These data indicate a possible role in the circadian system for both the vSCN and the mSCN. Additionally, several visual structures display daily fluctuations of 2DG uptake, two of which exhibit circadian variations, supporting previous studies indicting circadian regulation of the visual system. Efferents and afferents of the mSCN and vSCN were identified and compared to those of rodents. While the mSCN bears a stronger resemblance to the rodent SCN in its efferent connections than the vSCN, afferents of both are comparable. The total number of mSCN and vSCN neuronal connections far exceeds that of the rodent SCN. A subset of these connections is strikingly similar to those of the rodent SCN, while others are found to connect these two nuclei to the visual system. These data further support the involvement of both the mSCN and vSCN in the circadian and visual systems. Suprachiasmatic organization was addressed using classical techniques. Though loosely similar in location to the mammalian SCN, the mSCN is cyto- and chemoarchitecturally different, while the vSCN bears more similarity to the mammalian SCN in this regard. A unique astrocytic bridge exists between the mSCN and vSCN, suggesting a role for astrocytes in the circadian system. Finally, the vSCN efferent to the medial nucleus of Edinger-Westphal was verified using a technique that may advance future studies of avian of circadian organization. The current data and the available literature were considered in the development of a working model of the avian SCN.

Abstract:
My work explores domesticity, the role reversal happening in the family dynamics, the banality of home life, and the common escapism that occurs in parents. Men play a larger role in the home and women play a larger role outside the home blurring the lines of responsibility and changing expectations. This emasculating process often creates a power struggle within the home. These common issues are the fodder for my artistic practice. Domestic pattern, utility, sexual frustration, chaos and contentment all play a part.

Roberts, Rhys Dafydd. "The ovarian IGF system in the domestic hen (Gallus domesticus)." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/20147.

Full text
Abstract:
An assessment was made of the role of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) in the growth of granulosa and thecal cells of the pre-ovulatory follicles in the ovary of the domestic hen (Gallus domesticus). The presence of IGF-I in granulosa and thecal tissues was demonstrated by radioimmunoassay (RIA) of tissue extracts and by immunocytochemical analysis of cultured cells. Both studies showed that immunoreactive IGF-I was present in granulosa and thecal tissues. Reverse-transcription, polymerase chain reaction and Southern blotting analysis showed that IGF-I mRNA was present in total RNA extracted from granulosa and thecal tissue of the four largest follicles in the follicular hierarchy. Cell culture systems for chicken granulosa and thecal cells were established and used to determine the effects of IGN-I alone, and with gonadotrophins, on DNA synthesis using the incorporation of [3-H] thymidine into the cell as an index. The results of these studies showed that IGF-I stimulated DNA synthesis in both cell types in a dose-dependent manner. FSH and LH were shown to stimulate steroidogenesis, as measured by RIA, in thecal and granulosa cells respectively, but neither gonadotrophin stimulated DNA synthesis in thecal cells. LH but not FSH was shown to have a dose-dependent stimulatory effect on DNA synthesis in granulosa cells; when IGF-I and LH treatments were combined their stimulatory effects were synergistic. Serum factors were also shown to act synergistically with IGF-I in this respect. The effects of IGF-I were found to depend on follicle size, as did the effects of LH on granulosa cells. The synergistic actions of IGN-I and LH with respect to DNA synthesis in granulosa cells were independent of follicular size. The production of IGF binding proteins (IGFBP) by granulosa and thecal cell cultures was demonstrated using Western ligand blotting. A range of IGFBPs were shown to be produced by both cell types; when the patterns were compared, both were found to produce four proteins of the same size, but granulosa cells produced an additional protein not detected in thecal cell conditioned medium. The stimulation of cultures with IGF-I resulted in increased production of IGFBPS by granulosa but not by thecal cells; stimulation with LH had no effect on IGFBPs by granulosa cells.

Morandi, Raikova Anastasia. "Lateralization of hippocampal functions in domestic chicks (Gallus gallus domesticus)." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Trento, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/11572/321134.

Full text
Abstract:
The domestic chick (Gallus gallus domesticus) has been widely used as an animal model to investigate spatial orientation and the neural mechanisms underlying this function. In all vertebrate species the hippocampus plays an essential role in spatial orientation. Since the hippocampus is a bilateral structure, it is important to investigate the specific role of the left and the right hippocampi in spatial processing. Although, the domestic chick has been often used as animal model to assess cognitive lateralization, the involvement of the left and the right hippocampal formation in spatial orientation has been poorly investigated in this model. Behavioral studies using monocular eye occlusion have shown that in chicks the left eye-system (right hemisphere) is involved in the elaboration of spatial relational information, while the right eye-system (left hemisphere) processes local information. However, while visual lateralization in chicks had been traditionally considered to be induced by embryonic light exposure, recent studies suggest the presence of structural and behavioural asymmetries also in dark-incubated chicks. Thus, the main aim of this thesis was to test the lateralization of hippocampal functions in dark incubated chicks, both in spatial and non-spatial tasks. In the first study dark-incubated chicks were trained to orient in a large circular arena using spatial relational information provided by free-standing objects. Once chicks reached a learning criterion they were tested binocularly or under a monocular eye-occlusion condition. This study provided the first demonstration that domestic chicks are able to orient by relational spatial information provided by free-standing objects, in binocular vision conditions. However, if either one of the two eyes was occluded, chicks failed the orientation task. These results show that at least in dark-incubated chicks binocular integration is needed to solve this spatial orientation task. We also investigated if chicks have a preference to orient by local or spatial information provided by free-standing objects and if this ability is influenced by eye occlusion. Chicks preferred to use local over spatial cues to orient, both in binocular and monocular conditions (independently of which eye was occluded). These results indicate that local cues are processed by both eye-systems and do not require access to information from both eyes, contrary to relational spatial cues. Using the same setup, in the second study we directly investigated the involvement of chicks’ left and right hippocampal formation during orientation by free-standing objects. For this purpose we performed an immunohistochemical staining of the immediate early gene product c-Fos (a neural activity marker). Two independent groups of dark-incubated chicks were trained to find food in the large circular arena and the level of hippocampal activation was compared between the two groups. One group was trained to orient exclusively by local cues, while the other was orienting by spatial relational information provided by free-standing objects. This revealed selective activation of the right hippocampus during orientation by spatial relational information in dark-incubated chicks. While monocular occlusion has often been used to test lateralization of spatial functions in chicks, it is still unclear whether this manipulation affects hippocampal activation. The aim of the third study was to clarify this issue, by exposing dark-incubated chicks to a novel environment in conditions of monocular occlusion or binocular vision. Activation of the hippocampal formation was once again measured by c-Fos expression. Exposure to a novel environment is known to trigger hippocampal activation in different animals, including domestic chicks. As expected, exposure to the novel environment activated the hippocampus in binocular vision conditions. However, if either one of the eyes was occluded, the hippocampal c-Fos expression did not rise above what observed in the baseline condition (chicks maintained in a familiar environment). Thus, successful hippocampal response to a novel environment requires input from both eyes. Our results also suggest that monocular occlusion equally affects the left and the right hippocampus. Overall, access to information from both eyes plays a crucial role for the acquisition of a spatial map of a novel environment, in line with the behavioral results of the first study. Moreover, a task independent lateralization effect, with higher c-Fos expression in the left compared to the right hippocampus, could be observed in all the experimental conditions. This confirms the presence of neuroanatomical lateralization in dark-incubated chicks. The last study investigated whether chicks’ hippocampus would also respond to novel social stimuli, in line with the activation observed in this structure after exposure to a novel environment. Only few studies have directly investigated the involvement of birds’ hippocampal formation in social functions. Here, the hippocampal activation was compared between chicks exposed to an unfamiliar conspecific vs. chicks exposed to a familiar one. We found that the ventral and dorsomedial portion of the right hippocampus of dark-incubated chicks responds to an unfamiliar individual. This provides the first demonstration of hippocampal sensitivity to social novelty in birds. Overall the studies performed in this thesis indicate a selective lateralized involvement of domestic chicks’ hippocampal formation not only in spatial, but also in social functions.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the relationship of servants to the domestic spaces in which they lived and laboured. Although the place of servants within the 'household family' is well established, servants rarely feature as major characters in the literature on house, home, and domestic life. This thesis reintegrates servants into the contested narratives of the eighteenth-century space, and thinks-through the meaning of that space for the servants who lived and worked within it. The first two chapters offer an overtly bottom-up approach to the domestic space, which unapologetically shifts the focus from householder to servant, and from the much-examined world of parlour and drawing room to the neglected spaces of kitchen and garret. The first chapter, on the kitchen, outlines the significance of the kitchen and servants' work to the domestic project. Rather than a space of separation and segregation, this chapter suggests the kitchen space managed 'contact' between household members and between the household and the outside world. The second chapter, on the garret, sketches-out the material parameters of the spaces allocated for servants to sleep, and suggests they offer insight into the ways in which the domestic space shaped the identities of servants - not only as social subordinates, but as gendered members of the labouring poor. The third chapter, on servants' boxes considers the material items owned by servants in place, and the manner in which these items were accommodated within the domestic space. The focus on the box allows servants' life histories to be written into the domestic space; items stored in boxes served as reminders of the past, and 'imaginaries' for the future. The fourth and final chapter thinks more explicitly about the material world inhabited by servants, demonstrates the significance of servants' interaction with objects typically conceived as props of genteel domesticity, and reintegrates these objects into narratives of work, labour and industry.

Robson, Helen. "Calcium and growth hormone secretion in the domestic fowl (Gallus domesticus)." Thesis, University of Central Lancashire, 1993. http://clok.uclan.ac.uk/20102/.

Full text
Abstract:
Extracellular calcium is a ubiquitous molecule required for secretagogue induced growth hormone release from somatotroph cells of the chicken anterior pituitary. Growth hormone release can be induced via different intracellular pathways and these in turn can act to produce a synergistic hormone release. This thesis sought to further characterise the intracellular and membrane dependent pathways involved in growth hormone release with regard to the regulation of calcium ion and other ion fluxes, and to determine the mechanism for GRF and TRH synergy in the domestic fowl. Growth hormone secretion from chicken somatotroph cells was dependent upon the extracellular calcium concentration and its subsequent influx into dispersed chicken somatotroph cells in vitro, which was blocked by voltage dependent calcium channel antagonists. Both parameters also demonstrated a dependence on extracellular sodium. TRH stimulated growth hormone release was similarly dependent on the influx of calcium from the extracellular space in dispersed chicken somatotroph cells in vitro. hpGRF-44/TRH synergy, however, failed to show a corresponding potentiated calcium influx with the synergistic growth hormone release - this response was merely additive with respect to the two secretagogues. The intracellular second messenger dbc-AMP produced similar responses, in the presence of the various modulatory agents, to those observed with hpGRF-44, although the maximal levels reached were lower. hpGRF-44 depolarised chicken somatotroph cells in vitro. The profile of changes in the membrane potential indicated the presence of sodium, calcium and potassium channels. Removal of extracellular sodium abolished hpGRF-44 induced depolarisation. Low and high extracellular calcium concentrations resulted in potentiated and reduced responses respectively. Repolarisation of the somatotroph cells was dependent on calcium and although none of the calcium dependent potassium channel antagonists affected the maximal depolarisation that was reached, apamin removed the ability of the cells to repolarisc and thus depolarisation was prolonged. In the presence of these agents an enhanced release of growth hormone was observed under conditions of a prolonged depolarisation whilst it was diminished when the depolarisation was shortened or abolished. It is therefore concluded that hpGRF-44 induced growth hormone release in chickens is dependent on the influx of extracellular calcium which in turn is dependent on a variety of mechanisms not least the voltage dependent calcium channels. Ion fluxes are also modulated via a hpGRF-44 induced depolarisation characterised by its sodium, calcium and potassium components and which are necessary for eliciting and maintaining the growth hormone release. Synergistic growth hormone release involves a mechanism other than a potentiated calcium influx and in short involves the integration of a complex array of intracellular events and pathways. A model is suggested which summarises the role of extracellular calcium in GH release from somatotroph cells of the domestic fowl integrating the regulatory mechanisms involved both at the membrane level and the intracellular level.

Abstract:
In Peru, domestic services have been provided for some decades. It is an activity that is little recognized and that, in many cases, has been questioned due to the lack of a labor norm that provides security for both the people who provide the service and those who hire it. Furthermore, innovation and technology implementation seem not to have reached this sector. For this reason, it seeks to identify and verify that there is a potential to improve the conditions and processes that apply to this business model. For this, a qualitative research methodology is used with a technique of in-depth interviews and observation of participants. This has been applied to two clearly identified segments: those that provide the service and those that hire it. Some of the most important findings are the informality that turns into job instability for those who provide the service and, on the other hand - for those who request the service - the problem can focus on the insecurity that this entails. For this reason, Yanapay Domestic Service develops a business model that allows giving better working conditions to those people who provide the service and a security scenario, in various aspects, for those who hire it. Finally, a scenario for the implementation of this business model is established, with an innovative value proposition. A marketing plan, the organizational structure and a financial plan are developed. As a result, it is obtained that the project is viable, profitable and attractive to make an investment and put the business in.

Abstract:
This essay is to be filed as a sub-category under the greater question of what sets the odds for international cooperation. It takes a closer look at domestic politics’ influence over the issue area: utilizing a liberal rational actor theoretical approach with an interest focus. The subject of this single case study is climate politics in the United States during the Obama Administration and its meaning for the Copenhagen Accord commitments. It concludes that domestic politics matter for the odds of international cooperation in the case of U.S. climate action and that ratification of the U.S. commitments to Copenhagen rest in the hands of strong interest groups. This conclusion relies on the fact that in the U.S., the decision-making horizon for the ‘collective’ of government branches is short due to overlapping election cycles, a slow legislative process and a weak party structure. What this essay underlines is that ignoring domestic politics and viewing states as unitary actors under conditions of divergent policy preferences between branches of government will produce incomplete and incorrect conclusions about the reasons and odds for international cooperation.

I am a painter and a printmaker. My imagery consists of houses, barns, birds, trees, hands, and gloves. On the surface these items represent home, nature, and female identity. On another level they symbolize an inner world of dreams, wishes, and losses. My paintings contain aspects of collage, they combine paint, paper, and low relief. I paint layers of transparent and opaque images and colors in order to achieve a dreamy and ethereal effect. In printmaking, I combine my imagery in layers by printing small plates and stencils next to and on top of one another until a dense, multifaceted image is achieved.

Cooke, Victoria Elizabeth. "Growth associated and stress-induced myopathies in the domestic chicken (Gallus domesticus)." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/24481.

Full text
Abstract:
Genetic selection of broiler chickens for growth related production traits may have led to an increased susceptibility to both growth and stress induced myopathies. A comparison of a broiler (B); broiler great-grandparent (GGP) and layer (L) line revealed that by 25 weeks of age, the mean body weights reached by B, GGP and L lines were 5.1 kg, 5.2 kg and 1.9 kg. Increased Pectroalis major (Pm) breast muscle yield through increased fibres sizes may contribute to the greater B and GGP body weights. At 25 weeks, the mean Pm breast muscle fibre size reached by the B and GGP lines (65.9μm and 59.8μm respectively) were 1.5 times greater than that of the L line (38.1μm). Furthermore, there was divergence in muscle fibre growth between the mean Pm and Biceps femoris (Bf) leg muscle fibres of the B and GGP lines, but not the L line during growth. Cores, rims and split fibres observed in the leg muscles from older B and GGP birds may result from metabolitic stress associated with larger fibre sizes and inadequate capillary support. Enzyme markers of muscle damage were indicative of a greater growth associated myopathy in the B and GGP lines compared to the L line. Histopathological assessments also revealed muscle damage. The type and incidence of structural changes were related to bird line (B>GGP?L), age (prominent at 5 and 18-23 weeks), muscle (Ps: necrotic and basophilic fibres; Bf: hyaline and basophilic fibres), and circulating steroid levels (regenerative rather than degenerative processes associated with estrogen secretion). A reduction in enzyme markers of muscle damage preceded egg yolk precursor production and increased calcium (Ca2+) uptake for egg-shells synthesis. Estrogen may induce increased satellite cell activity and fibre regeneration, protecting muscle from the potential threat of Ca2+-induced muscle damage due the increased Ca2+ uptake. The demonstration of the alpha and beta estrogen receptor mRNA in chicken skeletal muscle indicates that the myoprotective effect of estrogen may involve receptor mediated gene regulation. The profile of muscle damage during the 48 hour period following exposure to acute heat stress was determined in birds from the B line. All or a combination of catching, handling sampling and crating procedures induced a hypocapnic alkalosis in the blood, which was associated with subsequent muscle damage. The heat stress was not severe enough to exacerbate this response, with the body temperature of the birds rising to just 42.5°C during heat stress exposure. Enzyme markers of muscle damage peaked between 12 and 48 hours following exposure to heat stress/control conditions.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines children's domestic work in Nicosia. The main argument is that children, through their participation in domestic work, actions, and re-actions, shape their household environments and structures, as their actions are shaped by household structures, thus contributing to the transformation and continuation of their respective domestic lives. Gender, sibling composition, generation, and birth rank of children are variables intersected throughout the chapters' to compare and contrast the periences of the participant children. A cluster stratified sampling was adopted to select the research participants. Qualitative and quantitative methods and techniques were combined for generating data: Interviews with children (10-12) and parents, participatory techniques with children, questionnaires, and diaries.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines recidivism for domestic violence offenders under both traditional probation and specialized probation conditions. This research compares recidivism at a traditional probation locality (Riverside Criminal Justice Services) and a specialized domestic violence unit (Chesterfield Community Corrections Services) in order to determine the nature of recidivism at both localities. In addition, the research aims to identify individual risk factors which are statistically associated with recidivism. The research is based on secondary data and draws on offender criminal records generated by the Virginia State Police, as well the extraction of information from probation files at both localities. The multivariate models indicate that a higher degree of recidivism occurs at the specialized domestic violence unit, and that the experimental locality, along with a younger age, are consistently statistically significant predictors for recidivism. Less consistent but still statistically significant risk factors included positive drug tests, higher supervision levels, and unsuccessful probation completion. The implications of these findings, as well as policy recommendations and directions for future research are fully discussed.

Abstract:
This thesis has two distinct yet interrelated parts. In the first instance, it investigates child domestic work in Iringa ? a small town in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania. Second, it examines the participatory action research methodology that was adopted as part of that investigation. Data were collected by a team of researchers that included children and young people who had themselves been domestic workers. A questionnaire, interviews and focus group discussions were conducted with local leaders, employers of child domestic workers and (both current and former) child domestic workers themselves. An agenda for change - that aimed towards the redistribution of power within domestic working arrangements - was developed on the basis of those data and presented to local government authorities in Iringa. This research makes a number of contributions to understandings of both child domestic work and participatory action research methodologies. First, the thesis contends that child domestic work is a complex activity which (despite its frequently exploitative and abusive character) should not be identified as a purely harmful force in the lives of young employees. The multiplicity of ways in which that occupation is experienced can only be uncovered through the incorporation of a range of stakeholders? perspectives. Second, this research found that notions of ?family? were discursively linked to child domestic working arrangements in Iringa. This has inhibited recognition of child domestic work as ?real work?, and contributed to the exploitation of these young employees. This thesis contends that increased formalisation and regulation of child domestic work would offer an opportunity to reconstruct child domestic workers as ?employees? and thereby improve their circumstances. This research has also challenged prevalent notions of children?s incompetence and shown that young people with minimal formal education can (and should) participate as co-researchers in academic endeavours investigating their lives. However, it has also found that young people?s competencies and interests vary, and that notions of appropriate participatory processes have often failed to take such diversity into account. This thesis contends that more participatory forms of evaluation may allow greater flexibility (and relevance) to be fostered when assessing the ?success? of participatory processes. Academics need to be alert to the alienating effects that (unwittingly) ?judgemental? and (unrealistically) ?perfect? accounts of participatory and action-oriented research processes can have on young scholars.

Abstract:
Passive solar gains to buildings in North European Climates can be significant and an investigation is made into the effect of orientation upon solar gains based upon known weather data. The conservatory is a particularly useful collector because of its inclusion to existing houses and its desirability to the householder for reasons other than solar collection. A conservatory was adapted and monitored. A computer model was written. The behaviour of the conservatory was examined for various criteria. The possibility of inclusion of a conservatory into houses in the existing housing stock was examined. The effect of occupancy on heating demand and solar delivery was reviewed and the likely overall energy saving was examined. A new house system was developed including the use of a first floor concrete slab and a gas warm air heating unit. A concrete floor slab was cast to examine its storage potential. A preliminary design for the heating system of the new houses was undertaken.

Kenny, Amy. "Domestic relations in Shakespeare." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2012. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/42121/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates how the size, structure and function of the family presented in Shakespeare's plays relates to an early modern understanding of the importance and function of the family. By examining domestic manuals, pamphlets, treatises and diaries from the early modern period, I establish what was considered normative domestic behaviour at the time and analyse Shakespeare's plays through these contemporary attitudes, specifically their treatment of privacy, household structure and medical beliefs surrounding reproduction and gynaecology. This thesis seeks to focus on the way in which people's positions in the family change over time, from infancy to adulthood, and how these relationships are represented in Shakespeare's plays. Beginning with marriage, where the family is first formed; I examine Othello and Macbeth, and show how the marriages in these plays, while tragic, are cherished and valued. Succession was integral to the legacy and sustainability of a family, which is the topic of the next chapter, in which I explore the notions of how children are conceived and raised in Richard III and The Winter's Tale. The transition from childhood into adulthood was fraught with change in both housing and legal circumstances, and this struggle in adolescence is clearly depicted in Romeo and Juliet, which comprises the third chapter. Aside from the familial relationships of husband and wife and parent and child, the most influential relationships were those of siblings, which I investigate in a number of plays in the fourth chapter. Finally, I focus on the traditional and complicated nuclear families in The Merry Wives of Windsor, Hamlet and Coriolanus, and analyse how the family is highlighted and valued in each of these plays. The thesis concludes that throughout Shakespeare's work, the family is privileged over war, nobility and absolute patriarchal control, emphasising that it is vital to understanding and analysing Shakespeare's plays.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to study and explain the purpose and the function of drain water heat exchangers. The thesis goes over theory behind heat transfer and heat exchangers and presents the general solutions of domestic drain water heat recovery systems. Systems gone over in detail are the different general shower drain water heat recovery systems. Another part of the thesis is a case study of an actual shower drain water heat recovery system of a Finnish household. The purpose of the case study is to study the actual temperature increase of cold water in a drain water heat recovery unit and efficiency of such heat exchanger. An alternate goal is to study the difference in efficiency values and temperature gains between two heat exchangers of the same model, where the other has been used significantly more than the other. In other words, another target is to study the fouling effect. The calculations are done using real measurement data. The most important findings are that utilizing a shower drain heat recovery unit provides real energy savings in the long run, and that there is a significant difference of efficiency between a dirty and a clean heat exchanger. Drain water heat recovery systems provided as high as 15 °C increase in the temperature of cold water. A clean heat exchanger boasts an impressive 50.4% efficiency, whereas the dirtier heat exchanger provides a 36.1% efficiency. The results can be further used to calculate the energy savings of the household on a yearly basis. Furthermore, the results show that domestic drain water heat recovery could potentially make a significant difference in national energy usage if implemented nationwide.

Full text
Abstract:
American photographer Catherine Opie combines portraiture and documentary photography in her photographic series titled Domestic. At the center of this series lies the idea of community and the question of how community is constructed, a theme which unites Opie’s seemingly disparate bodies of work. Domestic depicts lesbians from across the United States in scenes of domesticity, living as couples, families, and housemates. Using formal portrait conventions to aestheticize the images, Opie photographed her subjects in and around their actual homes to create images that are documentary in essence. The series works to represent the lesbian community, which Opie felt had been underrepresented in American fine art photography, as well as present an alternative to the heteronormative view of domestic life in America.

Branney, Peter Edward. "Deconstructing domestic violence policy." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2006. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/159/.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary objectives of this thesis are to, circularly, deconstruct contemporary domestic violence policy while developing and evaluating methods for deconstructing policy. Policy is theorised as a discursive practice, which allows a variety of policies to be compared and critiqued by how they position the people they affect. These are known as subject positions, or subjectivities, and throughout this thesis I attempt to critique policy by examining the (re)construction of subjectivity. In addition, because policy is not theorised as functioning through direct causal relations there is an opening for psychoanalytic subjectivities where the subject positioning occurs at the level of the unconscious. Consequently, I have chosen to draw upon Parker's critical transformative psychoanalytic discourse analysis (CTPDA) as a psycho-discursive method where discourse analysis and psychoanalysis are combined in such as way that psychoanalysisis understood to be a culturally produced theory of self. Three separate analyses of two key, contemporary domestic violence policies demonstrate the utility of CTPDA by developing it as a method alongside the topic under consideration the use of 'family' to name concern of policy is considered in Te Rito from Aotearoa/New Zealand (A/NZ), who are world leaders in the domain of domestic violence, and 'consultation' where decisions have already been made and gender through the gender-neutral term 'domestic violence' are considered in Safety and Justice (S&J) from the UK, where much of this thesis was undertaken. In the final chapter, I argue that critique needs to be able to imagine its own policies and ways of realising them and highlight that psychoanalysis has the potential to offer an effective approach.

Arizona has stringent permit requirements for submitting a notice of intent to drill a new water supply well for domestic use. The construction diagram and geologic log of all wells in the state are recorded with the Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR). The ADWR website – www.AzWater.gov/AzDWR/ —provides a wealth of information for the private domestic well owner. Well owners are responsible for the registration, repair, maintenance and up to-date record-keeping of their own wells and to monitor water quality to assure safe drinking water.

This is a section of the "Arizona Well Owner's Guide to Water Supply" already peer reviewed and published by CALs - - we are pulling out short topics from the booklet for 'fact sheet' publication and distribution. This is NOT applicable to eXtension as it is Arizona specific and not applicable to anything outside the state.
Arizona has stringent permit requirements for the construction of water wells, but domestic well owners are responsible for repair and maintenance of their own wells to assure a reliable water supply of consistent quality. For the proper maintenance of domestic wells, it is important to have a basic understanding about the different materials that comprise a home water supply system. This fact sheet presents information about Arizona domestic well components, including well casings, well caps, well screens, and pitless adapters; basic materials that combine with a pump to provide water for a household.

Payne, Tamika L. "Domestic Violence Recidivism: Restorative Justice Intervention Programs for First-Time Domestic Violence Offenders." ScholarWorks, 2017. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/3819.

Full text
Abstract:
Domestic violence impacts millions of Americans annually and, in spite of the use of rehabilitative programs, recidivism in domestic violence continues to be more likely than in any other offense. To date, batterer intervention programs (BIPs) have not proven to be consistently impactful in reducing recidivism in cases of domestic violence. The purpose of this quasi-experimental, quantitative study was to examine differences in recidivism for first-time male domestic violence offenders who have participated in a BIP and a more recently developed alternative: victim-offender mediation (VOM). The theories of restorative justice and reintegrative shaming frame this study to determine if offenders take accountability for their actions and face the victim in mediation, there can be a reduction in recidivism. Archival data from records of first-time male, domestic violence offenders, between the ages of 18 and 30, who participated in either a VOM or BIP in a county in the Midwest were examined for recidivism 24-months postintervention, and analyzed with an ANCOVA analysis while controlling for age. The findings revealed no significant difference in recidivism for first-time male offenders 24-months post participation in a BIP or a VOM intervention while controlling for age F (1,109) =.081, p = .777. The findings provide support for the notion that restorative justice interventions may be an additional intervention used in cases of domestic violence deemed appropriate for the intervention. The findings from this study can add to the body of research examining interventions to address the high recidivism in cases of domestic violence, which impacts victims, offenders, and communities.

This study questions why domestic work that is generally considered a feminine job is yet a field dominated by men in the city of Nampula, Mozambique. In the attempt to explain this phenomenon, the research explores economic, social and cultural aspects. Due to the fact that Nampula is a province with a strong Islamic presence and the majority of the population identify themselves as belonging to the Makhuwa ethnic group—which is traditionally defined by a matrilinear kinship system—I argue that the domestic sector remaines masculinised because of the influence of the matrilinear values and gendered practices. I also argue that the Islamic patriarchal values play a decisive role as men see themselves as the exclusive family providers and for that reason forbid their wives to develop and to get engaged in economic activities outside the household. This study also explores notions of masculinity in connection with domestic work and examines how male domestic workers, coming from rural areas and employed in the city, perceive and perform their masculine identities. How does the job of the domestic worker shape particular understandings of masculinity? Given the fact that many domestic workers in Nampula are immigrant people from the rural areas of the Zambézia province, I argue that migrating and working in the city is considered as a way to achieve a manhood as immigrants have access to goods that can only be purchased in urban contexts and are scarce in the villages. The access to all these “modern” commodities and the experience of the city make the immigrant young boys to gain respect in their original communities.

Abstract:
Sex trafficking is a grossly misconstrued and increasing issue within the United States. The purpose of this study was to extend current knowledge regarding the public’s education on domestic sex trafficking and perceptions of domestic sex trafficking victims. The public’s awareness of domestic sex trafficking and perceptions of domestic sex trafficking victims were examined through the utilization of a 31 closed-ended question survey. The survey included questions about domestic sex trafficking and prostitution myths, domestic sex trafficking victim characteristics, domestic sex trafficking legislation, law enforcement’s involvement in domestic sex trafficking cases, and demographics. The sample consisted of 195 Criminal Justice and Criminology students at East Tennessee State University, located in Northeast Tennessee. The results showed that, despite having a mostly empirical based view on domestic sex trafficking, students misconceived domestic sex trafficking victims when comparing the age of victims, such as child victims versus adult victims.

Liang, Wenqin. "Governing China’s domestic carbon market." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/60619.

Full text
Abstract:
In March 2011, the Chinese government unveiled a plan to establish a domestic cap-and-trade carbon market. In line with this policy, the NDRC designated five cities (Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, Tianjin and Shenzhen) and two provinces (Guangdong and Hubei) as pilot regions for emissions trading. Collectively accounting for 27.4% of China’s national GDP and 18.4% of its population, the seven pilot cap-and-trade markets are already in operation and are in the process of testing a potential future nationwide cap-and-trade market. This thesis examines the Chinese government’s decision to adopt domestic cap-and-trade as the process through which to lead China towards its goal of regulating GHG emissions. It explores the challenges that lie ahead and the adjustments that would be needed for the successful governance of the nascent cap-and-trade markets. Among the complex array of issues related to developing a cap-and-trade system, this thesis focuses primarily on the regulatory and oversight regimes, and employs an analytical framework based on the “good governance” criteria of accountability, cost-effectiveness, rule of law, transparency, and participation. The thesis proceeds as follows: The first chapter is the Introduction. It provides background with respect to the study, a review of the literature, and defines the primary research questions and methodology. Chapter Two describes the different types of carbon markets. Chapter Three investigates the evolution of China’s climate policy and the reason China adopts domestic carbon trading. Chapter Four provides a preliminary assessment of the current implementation policies of the cap-and-trade pilots, suggesting that major improvements and developments are needed to ensure the success of governing the carbon markets. Chapter Five analyzes the critical issues and potential obstacles involved in governing China’s cap-and-trade market by drawing on lessons from international practices as well as previous environmental regulatory experiments that have been implemented in China over the past 20 years. Chapter Six discusses the implications of governing China’s carbon market for China’s environmental protection practice. The last chapter presents some conclusions.

Full text
Abstract:
The domestic playing of videogames is examined through a series of extended dialogues with male adolescents. The research process was grounded in a theorisation of audience activity in communication studies which sees meanings emerging from the boys’ engagements with kinetic texts in terms of refigurative activity. This encapsulates reading, interpretation, and a cultural productivity whereby the kinetic text is returned to the everyday world, primarily through a relation of mimicry. The cultural fertility of videogames is traced through this mimicry to reveal a series of themes: a de-stabilising of the distinction between work and play spaces; the fragmentation of audiences of the small screen in the home through the establishment of gendered playspaces; the instilling of competitive relations within male community; and the melding of fantasy and discipline. An investigation of the significance of soundtrack to videogame play leads to the conclusion that in videogame playing a new cultural competency is taking shape in the form of a postmodern literacy, which lays stress on a continuous circumlocution, a destabilizing of narrative time, and middles rather than beginnings or endings. The findings contradict many ideas regarding videogame playing: that players are addicts; that videogame play is mindless; or that players are fickle. Videogame playing is implicated as an identity-making discursive project considered central to the business of being a male adolescent.

Abstract:
The turn of the Century in this country brought with it the introduction and ensuing growth of water-born trade markets, facilitating the establishment of a series of metropolitan hubs scattered along the coastline. The subsequent hundred years has seen a major increase in population within these areas accompanied by an economic shift away from maritime trade. Older ports have been abandoned, leaving behind antiquated urban infrastructure. The subsequent dismantling of these vast waterfront industrial areas has provided an opportunity for the reconfiguration of these spaces and the implementation of new urban and landscape strategies. Through a recycling of the existing fabric and introduction of new uses, many cities have revitalized their industrial wastelands and integrated these areas within the existing urban fabric. Other coastal cities have merely overlooked these neglected districts and focused development in their periphery, transforming these former economic focal point into physical and typological barriers.
