Full textIn addition, a previously identified short tandem repeat locus designated BfMs believed to be in the CFB locus was mapped to an intron within the adjacent SKI2VL locus. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified by analysing homologous sequences from a minimum of five individual sheep. In total 33 SNPs were discovered distributed over eleven distinct loci. Allele frequencies for SNPs from ten of these loci were determined and reported for a panel of 71 sheep comprising 58 unrelated sheep from the Rylington Merino flock plus a further 13 unrelated parental animals from a three generation half sibling sheep pedigree. The availability of an independently confirmed pedigree constructed from a three generation half sibling sheep family permitted the identification by deduction of central region MHC haplotypes based on a panel of SNPs derived from 10 loci. This is the first reporting of haplotypes covering this region of the sheep MHC. Analysis of SNP panel genotypes in the cohort of 71 unrelated sheep using the expectation maximization algorithm permitted the prediction of a group of approximately 20 haplotypes, which accounted for more than 90% of the expected haplotype distribution. Four of these predicted haplotypes were also present in the known haplotype cohort deduced from the sheep pedigree. Analysis of pairwise linkage disequilibrium between SNP loci in the cohort of 71 unrelated sheep showed a centre-most region displaying relatively high levels of linkage disequilibrium which was bounded by two regions displaying more variable linkage disequilibrium.
It is hypothesised that this mid region of the central region of the sheep MHC may be a block like structure characterized by low recombination similar to those that have been widely described in the human and mouse genomes. The discoveries reported in this thesis provide a more accurate and detailed description of the central region of the sheep MHC together with a panel of SNPs, which reflect the diversity of this important genomic region which is known to be associated with immune responsiveness. The description, for the first time, of central region haplotypes provides a practical means of seeking candidate loci associated with disease resistance and productivity traits. The application of molecular techniques will enhance the rate at which the genomic composition of this region is elucidated and the work described in this thesis will contribute to final characterization of this important complex in health and disease.

This study was performed with the aim of to evaluate the “in vitro” acaricidal activity of the oil of the seed of andiroba against Boophilus microplus, Rhipicephalus sanguineus and Anocentor nitens; the biological activity of the third stage larvae (L3) of Musca domestica and the activity of the oil of the seed of andiroba on the larval culture of gastrointestinal nematodes of goat and sheep. The acaricidal activity in the related species of tick was carried by means of the engorged females immersion test, using groups of 10 engorged females with three repetitions for treatment; for the test with the third stage larvae (L3) of Musca domestica it had been formed four repetitions with 10 larvae for treatment. Strips of filter paper measuring 8.5 x 1.5cm (L x W) were soaked in 0.3ml of the solutions and controls, and next, they were introduced in test tubes, adding 1.30g of vermiculite, being the tubes closed with absorbent cotton. Daily observations were made for detection of mortality of larvae, formation of pupae and adults emergence. The activity of the oil of andiroba on larval culture of gastrointestinalnematodes was determined by the calculation of the percentages of reduction of infective larvae for gram of faeces, using three repetitions. For each experiment it had been used dilutions of 100%, 50%, 30%, 25% and 10% (T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5 respectively) of the oil of the seed of andiroba, using tween 80 as detergent. Two groups had been formed as controls, one with deionized water and another one with tween 80 + deionized water. For the test of reduction of gastrointestinal infective larvae of nematodes, another group was added as positive control (doramectina). The results showed effectiveness of 100% for all the dilutions tested in the three species of ticks. In the test with L3 of de M. domestica, eight days after the accomplishment of the test, it was observed in the 100% concentration 20.0% of larval mortality and 62.5% of inhibition of emergency of adults, values significantly higher than those got in the other treated groups. In the test of reduction of gastrointestinal infective larvae of nematodes, effective reduction (> 90%) was obtained for 100%, 50% and 30% treatments in goat, and for all the treatments for sheep.

Full textUntil recently, osteological studies into ancient diet and health have primarily focused upon human remains. As a result, these areas of research are still in their infancy in the field zoo-archaeology. Animals have paid a heavy price for many major human advances, such as those in agriculture and transport. This use (and often abuse) of animals has left many tell-tale signs in their teeth and bones. Along with the many advantages in animal exploitation have also come major problems for humans. Thus, infectious diseases passed from animals to humans must have long played a significant evolutionary role in the development of society. The zooarchaeological record could provide an extremely important temporal framework for exploring and understanding past and current issues of human health and animal welfare. This volume provides one of the first contributions to the field, and may stimulate many more.

"Behavioural and physiological responses of domestic sheep (Ovis aries) to the presence of humans and dogs :|ba thesis presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Animal Science at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand." 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10179/1484.
Full textBoth humans and dogs are integral in sheep production systems; however, which is more aversive to sheep, or indeed, whether either causes significant stress, has not been shown experimentally. The aim of this thesis was to examine some behavioural and physiological responses of domestic sheep to the presence of humans or dogs. An arena test was used to measure the relative aversion of sheep to the presence of a human or dog, as well as to elucidate differences in the responses of flocks at the University of Western Australia (UWA) which were putatively selected for differences in fearfulness. A Y maze preference test was used to 'ask' sheep whether they preferred a human shaking a rattle or a barking dog. In both tests, adrenocortical responses were measured concurrently to support the interpretation of behaviour. The presence of a human or dog in the arena elicited significantly more avoidance and vigilance behaviour and less exploration than did the presence of a control object. However, the dog elicited significantly more of this fear-related behaviour, and significantly larger adrenocortical responses than did the human. Sheep also expressed a clear preference for a human shaking a rattle over a barking dog in the Y maze test and exhibited larger adrenocortical responses to the dog than to the human in the Y maze facility. The UWA flocks differed in their expression of locomotor and vocal activity; MA sheep were more active/vocal than the other flocks, not only in the presence of the human but also with the box or dog. MA sheep expressed less avoidance and vigilance and more exploration than the other flocks in the presence of the human and exhibited significantly lower plasma cortisol concentrations than LA sheep after exposure to the human (10-min sample). However, there were no inter-flock differences in fear-related behaviour or adrenocortical responses when the flocks were presented with the box or dog. The results do not support the notion that the UWA flocks have been selected for differences in a consistent predisposition to react fearfully. The adrenocortical responses measured in these studies were only moderate in magnitude and duration, with peak plasma cortisol concentrations 2-3 times higher than pre-treatment values, and all concentrations returning to pre-treatment levels within one hour of the start of treatment. If these observations are confirmed in practical situations, the presence of humans and dogs during routine handling should cause little concern on the basis of animal welfare. However, limiting the presence of dogs in certain situations (e.g. before slaughter) may reduce stress in domestic sheep. Significant methodological developments in this research include the use of multivariate statistical techniques to analyze arena behaviour, the concurrent measurement of adrenocortical and behavioural responses in the arena and Y maze tests, and the explicit testing of the effects of individual lateral biases on choice behaviour in a Y maze test. Future studies should measure sheep stress responses to the presence of humans and dogs in practical situations.

“The emphasis on human rights” is the new global focus, changing people’s thought and contributing to the formation of various laws. Take our country for example. Laws such as the Domestic Violence Prevention Act, the Sexual Assault Prevention Act and the Child and Youth Sex Trafficking Prevention Act convey the meaning of respecting human beings and their own rights. Needless to say, only at an appropriate time will advocacy have an effect. This study designs parent-kid educational learningsheets that advocate the prevention of domestic violence and sexual assault, targeting third and fourth graders, whom the researcher is currently teaching, and conducts research that incorporates the parent -kid learningsheets mentioned above. Results from the study indicate that the sample of students who received the prevention of domestic violence and sexual assault education were different from the sample of students who did not receive the learningsheets. Differences between the two groups arose in their understanding of, attitude towards, and cognitive knowledge of the prevention of the domestic violence and sexual assault. However, whether or not the prevention tools were utilized, the ideas and suggestions from the parents and students in both samples can be important future considerations during the design of prevention education and teaching methods. As the economic scale of domestic car rental industry is growing year by year, it draws the investment from many renowned groups of financial and automotive related industries. It gives rise to the demands related to car rental, car insurance and second-hand car trading. This paper mainly applies linear regression to analyze the relationship between the domestic car rental operator, and the car asset repair, asset salvage value, second-hand car servicing cost and capacity of service factory. The newly-built sheet-metal spray paint service factory is expected to achieve balance between the reduction of overall repair cost, improvement of service quality and asset salvage value, and lower second-hand car servicing cost. It further integrates the management tools of Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats analysis (SWOT analysis) and Plan- Do-Check-Act(PDCA). Based on the utilization of operation effectiveness and the practical operation performance, it adopts linear regression to explore the development direction of the sheet-metal spray paint factory built by the car rental industry, and its design of innovative business model. The study results of this paper can provide reference for the development of car rental industry in terms of the business architecture or the improvement direction of self-owned repair factory.

Full textAt the end of the 19th century close of the locality Hemmoor (Lower Saxony) an urn cemetery from the time of the Roman Iron Age was discovered, on that the so-called Hemmoor situla were found. The 32 fragments presented here were found during the anthropological examination of the cremated bone finds from six situlae. The most important piece of the finds is a chicken bone fragment dated into the period between the end of the 2nd up to the first half of the 3rd century. It represents an important evidence for the beginning of the animal husbandry of house poultry. The further bone remainders come predominantly from sheep or goats. The age determination resulted in that no one of the animals became hardly older than two years. In addition it was noticeable that most remainders come from the bones of the lower limbs. That bones carry not a lot of meat.
