The following research analises the individual formation s process during its trajectory in the institutions. In order to do that, were taking in consideration as sources of information and analized excerpts of five films made by the french director François Truffaut, namely: The Four Hundred Blows (1959), Antoine and Colette (1962), Stolen Kisses (1968), Bed and Board (1970), Love on the Run (1979). They portray the story of Antoine Doinel autobiographical character who stars these series of films lived among different institutions: Family, school, reformatory, prison, army and other groups responsible for his socialization. With the purpose of exploring the formation of the individual in its objectivation in the work of art, the theoretical framework adopted to build this study is The Critical Theory of Society, using, mainly, the concepts of individual, family, society, formation and so-called formation developed by Theodor W. Adorno and Max Horkheimer. The society objectvated in the work of art has allowed the investigation to find that the individual cannot exist in the society accordind to its self-determination. The formation by means of institutions is permeated by impoverished experiencies based in punishing and coercive methods that aim the standardization to the stablished order and social control, enforcing deep marks in the individual who has little alternatives to resist to the rules formerly determined by the suprastructure. Such appropriation of the individual in the social relationships of domination reproduces the characteristics of culture in the managed society: the so-called formation. The refusal of Antoine Doinel in adhering to the forms established by society reflects a negative relationship with the existing reality, poiting to the possibility of overcoming it

Abstract:
In which way does a cineaste transforme his or her reel self into works? How can we recognize this self-image in the films? This study concerns the autobiographical expression in the films of sevral french cineastes, such as Jean Cocteau, François Truffaut, and Romain Goupil, those who intended constantly to create their own cinematic double all over their works. We will see the distinctive character of self-expression films through the various aspects of cineastes’ introspective gaze : those toward his « another self », toward his own death, etc. These gazes might be also examined in relations with the various ways that we can hear the polyphonic voices of cineastes

Abstract:

Osborn, Sharani Evelyn. "Doing fatherhood, doing family : contemporary paternal perspectives." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/21085.

Full text
Abstract:
Research in recent decades has identified a conception among fathers, and others, of a widespread qualitative change in the potential nature of fatherhood for men. This widely circulated ideal of contemporary, participatory fatherhood is characterised as new, intimate, involved and productive of new practices of ‘masculinity’ (Henwood and Procter, 2003). A belief that fathers play a major part in family life and family a major part in fathers’ lives may, first, change the nature of the life course transition entailed in becoming a father. Second, ‘new’ fatherhood is new in that it is distinguished from a model of authoritarian distance associated with ‘traditional’ fatherhood. What is new is that the primary focus of fatherhood is intimate relationships with children. Third, intimate relationships are generated through fathers’ involvement in family life alongside mothers in a more equitable sharing of the responsibilities of parenting. Finally, as distinctions between maternal and paternal are blurred, some of the lines between ‘masculine’ and ‘not-masculine’ are redrawn. These aspects which the ideal of ‘new’ fatherhood constructs as arenas of change correspond to the domains in relation to which diversity among contemporary fathers are explored in this thesis. Accounts of becoming and being fathers were generated in semi-structured qualitative interviews with a diverse sample of 31 fathers. The first dimension of fatherhood analysed is the place of visions of family and fatherhood in the process of becoming a father. Participants’ situated their orientation to fatherhood in the life course and in the partner relationship. In examining how participants construct family’s needs and parents’ responsibilities, I argue that imagined and lived family relationships are significant for men’s orientations to fatherhood, for their attitude to having further children and for evaluating the resources, material and otherwise, for doing so. The second dimension considered is intergenerational legacies. Participants with different experiences of the father-child relationship engage with their parenting heritage and characterise the legacy they would like to pass on. Connections and breaks with the previous generation of fathers are understood in terms of parent-child relationships, biographical narratives and the relational and discursive resources and constraints of the present. The relation of fatherhood to motherhood is the third dimension explored, through analysis of the different ways in which participants in couples construct, first, the relation between their own practice and their partner’s in the parenting partnership and, second, the relation between caregiving, provision, paid work and career in their own practice. I argue that fathers’ practice is worked through in the lived relationship with their partner, in terms of the division of labour and responsibilities and in the negotiation of similarity and difference, equality and authority, and with reference to a range of discursive resources. Many fathers seek to balance their commitments to the different dimensions of fatherhood in relation to paid work, but in other dimensions of personal life. The fourth aspect of the analysis examines accounts where fathers speak of co-existing contradictory orientations, to freedom and commitment, for example, and moments of ambivalence in relation to the normative articulations of ‘masculinity’ and fatherhood. On the basis of this four-fold analysis of diversity in contemporary multidimensional fatherhood, I argue for a plural focus on the practices of doing family, doing fatherhood and un/doing gender makes conceptual space for engaging critically with the diverse practices through which fathers sustain the relationships and fulfil the responsibilities of multi-dimensional fatherhood.

Johnson, Austin Haney. "Doing cisgender vs. doing transgender| An extension of 'doing gender' using documentary film." Thesis, Kent State University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1555293.

Abstract:

Trans men have been the subject of many empirical studies in recent years that focus primarily on their engagement with masculinity within interaction. By highlighting the experiences of trans men, researchers argue that the persistent and often invisible experiences of gender inequality, specifically those of cisgender women, are made more visible. While scholars studying trans men in these scenarios categorize these interactions under the general heading of doing gender, I argue that these studies highlight experiences of doing cisgender, defined in this paper as individuals' accomplishment of gender within interaction according to cisnormative standards. However, the generalized moniker of doing gender is complicit in the marginalization of trans individuals' experiences of gender because it marks the dominant gender identification, cis, as the unnamed norm and eclipses trans-specific experiences of gender. While understanding how trans people do cisgender is an important contribution to the literature, I argue that doing cisgender is one component of trans people's experience of doing gender. My primary contention in this paper is that trans people also do transgender; that is, they are held accountable to transnormative standards that police and enforce the medical/legal/social access to trans as an identity category. To illustrate the differences between doing cisgender and doing transgender, I conduct a qualitative content analysis of nine documentary films featuring trans men, highlighting instances in the films of trans men doing cisgender and doing transgender.

Abstract:
This dissertation considers the rhetorical use of the term “spontaneity” and action affiliated with it from the perspective of ethnomethodology, as a dynamic social practice emergent from concrete interactions among people. I first consider a variety of existing operationalizations of “spontaneity” in academic research from the perspective of what is ethnomethodologically accomplished by these operationalizations, i.e., what questions do they answer or attempt to answer? I then turn to a detailed rhetorical analysis of the term “spontaneity” as an ideograph in improvisational theatre, a social practice in which enactment of spontaneity is treated as criterial to identity and recognition of the practice. In this ideographic analysis, I consider both a set of popular improv method texts and a collection of interviews with improviers who relate narratives about their experiences or observations of spontaneity. I assess the rhetorical practices in these artifacts both through the operationalization framework I identify and from a critical perspective, asking how practices of spontaneity in improv relate to social structures and practices of privilege, oppression and power.

Umpleby, Philip. "Doing counselling differently." Thesis, University of Bristol, 2014. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.686823.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation offers a critical account of the process I have used to change and reconstruct my counselling practice. Viewed through the lens of modernity heroin addiction resembles a storm of personal and social problems that drives the redemptive qualities of personal growth out of the reach of individuals. Conventional approaches to treatment perceive heroin addicts to be problematic individuals whose behaviour and other social and cultural issues are diminished in importance by their overwhelming need to satisfy their dependency. Within such notions treatment interventions, including counselling, are predominantly conceived in terms of a biomedical model that focuses upon discipline and control. The dissertation recognises that such approaches leave little space for individual acts of meaning. The dissertation critically and creatively explores the issue of drug addiction from the perspective of my work as a counsellor. I will discuss my feelings, emotions and thoughts to reflect how I might use lived experience to change how I counsel individuals addicted to heroin. Living and working in Stockton I have developed a strong awareness and understanding of its history and social spaces. It is an area in gradual decline characterised by social inequality and deprivation. The dissertation examines the consequences for my practice of counselling in such a context of social disadvantage. The meanings embedded in the everyday life of heroin addicts provide an opportunity for me to appreciate the kind of life being lived but also allow me to develop a different way of counselling that seeks to redress the damage done by social inequalities and addiction to heroin. I will argue that the traditional values of client-centred counselling autonomy-fidelity, justice, non-malfeasance and beneficence-need be rejected and replaced by an approach that encourages emancipatory social change. The dissertation draws upon a Goethean approach to science that encourages the use of imagination to gain an understanding of experience and provides the basis for a different way of knowing. Such a way of knowing is expressed through the use of photographic images interwoven with written text; together these narratives seek to throw open the conventional organization of counselling in order to contest the unequal social distribution of resources.

Abstract:
The awareness and interest concerning corporate social responsibility has grownamong both firms and their stakeholders, which has resulted in a continuous upwardtrend regarding CSR reporting. This has led to the emergence of reporting frameworklike Global Reporting Initiative. The issues is that there are limited regulationscontrolling what should be reported and how it should be reported, thus most CSRreporting is voluntary. This creates differences among firms and within industries. The differences make it difficult to compare reporting between firms and to assess thebenefits of CSR reporting. The purposes of this study is to explain what variables affects the CSR reportingquality and what the rationale behind CSR reporting is, which includes investigatingthe effect of reporting quality on cost of capital. The evolution of CSR reporting willalso be examined. The nature of the study is quantitative with a deductive approach. Hypotheses will bedeveloped from prior theory and tested statistically using multiple regression analysis. The theoretical foundation of this study is stakeholder theory, legitimacy theory andinformation asymmetry. The chosen variables are argued by prior literature to effectreporting quality. The variables are board diversity, ownership concentration, separatesustainability reports, external assurance, GRI application levels and industry. Ameasure of reporting quality will be developed using content analysis and theestimation for cost of capital will be calculated based on a model for rPEG. Thesample consists of firms listed on Nasdaq OMXS30 index in 2006, 2008 and 2010.Statistical support for positive association between reporting quality and boarddiversity, ownership concentration, external assurance, GRI A and GRI B and theindustries industrials, consumer goods and basic materials were found. An indirectassociation between reporting quality and cost of capital was found. The findings arein agreement with the rationale behind CSR reporting; a firm can do well by doinggood. It was further concluded that the development during this time period hasfollowed the previous trend and continuously increased.

Abstract:
By applying ethnographic method this study sought to explore how football’s mediatization is inviting the digital displacement of fan culture by social media-based communities. It also aimed to understand how contemporary football fans engage online as part of identifying themselves as supporters of a football club. This research was motivated by the global resonance of fandom which is due to the media becoming part of the experience of being a fan, resulting to the formation of transnational communities. The two-way online communication has enabled supporting from afar, forming digital fans. Liverpool FC’s Greek fans official group on Facebook was used as the case study for content analysis, along with in-depth interviews. The results have shown that social media have been the facilitators of football’s mediatization, digitalizing fan habits that used to be parts of the social life. Self-identification as a fan has taken a much more cosmopolitan outlook, which prioritizes participation. The dimensions of participation are though mediatized, resulting to highly engaged communities regardless of locality. To deal with the redefinition of fandom expression, this thesis has contributed with an end-result protype of a service addressing the process of doing digital fandom. As media technology develops, football’s mediatization will only exponentially increase and this study can offer insights to the better understanding of the different dimensions that digital fan culture adds to the sport.

Ilea, Adina. "Doing time, doing gender: Hyper-masculinity as a coping strategy among male prisoners." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/28152.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis assesses the role conceptions of masculinity, more particularly hyper-masculinity play in male prisoners' strategies for coping with the challenges posed by a virtually unisexual prison environment. The study used eight autobiographies by former male prisoners who served sentences in either Canada or the United States in the last forty years. The findings were gathered using a qualitative three-stage coding process and were analyzed using masculinity theories. The results reveal that male prisoners use both hyper-masculine, violent coping strategies and non-violent strategies depending on the circumstances. Critical masculinity theory is better able to explain the violent strategies rather than the non-violent ones. This research is significant because it illuminates the impact of gender on male prisoners' lives and their abilities to cope with imprisonment. The results can be used to inform both treatment and policies regarding male prisoners' incarceration.

Abstract:
Background: Today, It’s not uncommon that international companies and organizations have a higher turnover than the GDP of developing countries. Consequently, this may suggest that the choices companies make in the context of their business has a great potential to influence the world from an economic, but also from a social and environmental standpoint. From this the notion emerged that companies have a responsibility, referred to as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). A clear definition of the CSR concept is difficult to find, more than 37 different definitions has been identified. Common to all these is that they address a number of underlying themes such as: Balance, Responsibility, and Value. Few studies examine companies’ underlying assumptions about the adaptation and communication of CSR, and the perception of how one type of value in relation to another is created and defined. It is clear, however, that companies must make a choice regarding which areas of CSR they should prioritize. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to study how Swedish companies strategically adapt their CSR initiatives and CSR communication to create value. Method: In order to answer the purpose of the thesis a qualitative method has been used. Interviews were conducted with CSR representatives from three major Swedish companies. Theories: The Pyramid of CSR, Green marketing activities on three levels, Generic environmental strategies and Ten rules for successful CSR communication. Conclusion: The results of the study suggest that the link between the adaption of CSR and CSR communication is based on the business value perspective. Furthermore, it would seem that the competitive strategy of a company is in close symbiosis with their value perspective. The result of the study indicate that there is not a value perspective which should be preferred over others in the adaption of CSR and CSR communication, the value perspective should instead be relative to the company’s current competitive strategy and industry conditions.

Sanghavi, Prachi. "Is Doing More, Doing Better? Basic Versus Advanced Life Support Ambulances for Medical Emergencies." Thesis, Harvard University, 2015. http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:17467334.

Abstract:
Deficiencies in the quality of pre-hospital care constitute a serious public health problem that has largely been neglected by the scientific community. Trauma and complications of acute disease produce medical emergencies outside of the hospital setting. Treating patients with these conditions involves an inherent trade-off between providing treatment on-site and reducing time to hospital care. My dissertation compares two models of providing pre-hospital care, and highlights a data-driven approach to identifying potentially fraudulent ambulance claims. Chapters 1 and 2 compare effects of Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) on outcomes after out-of-hospital medical emergencies. Most Medicare patients seeking emergency medical transport are treated by ambulance providers trained in ALS. Evidence supporting the superiority of ALS over BLS is limited. I analyzed claims from a 20% sample of Medicare beneficiaries from non-rural counties between 2006-2011 with cardiac arrest, major trauma, stroke, acute myocardial infarction (AMI), or respiratory failure. To address unmeasured confounding, I exploited variation in geographic penetration in ALS rates across counties, using instrumental variables analysis. In particular, I predicted the probability of ALS use for each patient as a function of ALS rates in each county for patients with other diagnoses, using a multilevel, multivariate model. Survival to 90 days for trauma, stroke, cardiac arrest, and AMI patients was higher with BLS than ALS; respiratory failure patients did not exhibit differences in survival. I conducted a secondary analysis based on propensity score-based balancing weights, and this produced generally similar results. I concluded ALS is associated with substantially higher mortality for several acute medical emergencies compared to BLS, and may harm patients through delayed hospital care and iatrogenic injury. In Chapter 3, I link patient demographic information and ambulance, outpatient, and inpatient claims to look for the inconsistency of having a claim for an ambulance transport with seemingly no real patient - a 'ghost'. I find 1.9% of emergency transports have this inconsistency. I estimate the distribution of ghost ride rates by suppliers and separately, by counties, using an expectation-maximization algorithm. I find the ghost rides are not evenly distributed across counties or suppliers. Although it is not possible to conclusively distinguish billing anomalies due to fraud from data entry errors and similar explanations, this type of analysis may provide useful starting points for further investigation of Medicare fraud.

We consider the problem of constructing a directed acyclic graph that encodes temporal relations found in a text. The unit of our analysis is a temporal segment, a fragment of text that maintains temporal coherence. The strength of our approach lies in its ability to simultaneously optimize pairwise ordering preferences and global constraints on the graph topology. Our learning method achieves 83% F-measure in temporal segmentation and 84% accuracy in inferring temporal relations between two segments.

Abstract:
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a concept that is growing increasingly important, with more and more companies acknowledging that they have an obligation to the environment in which they operate. We were interested in inquiring into why companies chose to do so, even though there are no laws that condition them to engage in CSR. One answer to this might be that companies use CSR as a way to distinguish themselves from the competition as well as to gain trust and goodwill from the stakeholders. When it comes to Corporate Social Responsibility, the question is no longer whether or not companies should engage in it, but how they can gain competitive advantage by doing so.   This study aims at providing a framework for possible ways of integrating CSR and branding, as well as different strategies for CSR-communication. We also tried to define how, and why, consumers respond to CSR-initiatives. We based our case study on the Swedish fashion brands Gina Tricot and Nudie Jeans, two companies that have both chosen to undertake CSR- and sustainability efforts. The study’s foundation lies on material from our conducted in-depth interviews and quantitative survey, as well as former studies on the subject. We sought to understand how and why companies engage in CSR-activities, how the two companies have chosen to incorporate CSR in their branding, how they communicate this both internally and externally, and finally how the CSR-efforts are perceived by the average consumer and influence their view of the brand. The theoretical framework relies on earlier studies and research regarding CSR, branding, different strategies for CSR-communication, as well as theories regarding how the consumers respond to CSR.   Our analysis highlights the way our chosen companies have underestimated the degree to which consumers want to learn about the companies’ CSR-efforts, as well as how they wish to be informed. The result from our survey implies that the consumers have an interest in learning about companies’ CSR-programs and that such efforts for the most part will be beneficial when it comes to the stakeholders’ view of the company.

Abstract:
Purpose - The purpose of this study is to investigate behavioral factors influencing investment intentions.   Design/methodology/approach – A descriptive quantitative study was conducted utilizing an online questionnaire with a total of 121 respondents.   Findings - The results of the study indicated that Subjective Norm, Perceived Behavioral Control, and Perceived Consumer Effectiveness are positively related to Intention to Invest. Attitude and Perceived Risk did not reach statistical significance and no conclusions could therefore be drawn regarding the concepts.   Research limitations/implications - The greatest limitation of the study is that it measures intention and not actual behavior which could be of more value, both from a theoretical and managerial perspective. The implication of the study is that it contributes to the Socially Responsible Investment literature from the intentional perspective and that it considers Generation Y, two aspects that have previously been neglected. The study further provides companies operating in SRI industry with a framework to use when acquiring customers within Generation Y.   Originality/value - As recent Socially Responsible Investment research has focused almost exclusively on financial performance this study offers value in that it instead explains behavioral factors influencing the Intention to Invest. It further focuses on Generation Y which is the upcoming generation when it comes to investing that has to a large extent been neglected in the SRI literature.

Abstract:
The issue of corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a highly prominent on the international business stage. CSR is present in almost any organization regardless of its size or the industry in which it is operating. This thesis aims to examine the unconventional link of CSR and employee work motivation, considering how prominent the issue is today. It seeks to explore employee awareness of the issue in the workplace and its influence on motivation of employees on both managerial and subordinate levels.Interviews and surveys were conducted among employees from a variety of departments in organizations that are highly involved with CSR. The goal was to learn about the influences that CSR has on the individuals who have a close connection with it and predict whether making more emphasis on social responsibility in organizations could have a practical benefit resulting in an increased employee motivation. The analysis of the findings showed that CSR can indeed contribute to increased employee motivation. Training and development programs based on CSR can have a positive effect on motivation of employees with some dependency on several factors: level of intrinsic motivation, initial interest in and the level of awareness about CSR and/or the presence of needs of achievement and affiliation.

Abstract:
Over the past 20 years, scrapbooking has become immensely popular in America. This dissertation is the study of scrapworthy lives, that is, how lives become structured by scrapbooking and how people show others that their own life and the lives of their loves ones are value—or scrapworthy. I conducted in-depth interviews with 38 scrapbookers, 11 scrapbook industry workers, and 10 family and friends of scrapbookers. I also used photo-elicitation interviewing techniques with both the scrapbookers and the family members and friends of 10 scrapbookers to examine a selection of scrapbook pages the respondents had completed. I used grounded theory methods to analyze my data, providing a more thorough understanding of scrapbooking. Scrapbooks are a site where people socially construct a narrative of their life. Through scrapbooking, scrapbookers do gender, family, race, ethnicity, and religion. Stratification within the larger society can be seen within the scrapbooking thought community. Moreover, through scrapbooking, people can demonstrate their membership in other thought communities (e.g., motherhood). Though scrapbookers are able to demonstrate their gender, family status, race, ethnicity, and religion through scrapbooking, the hobby is done primarily for the scrapbookers and not for others. Scrapbooking is a leisure activity, though some may consider it as a form of work. Scrapbookers are a thought community in their own right and an excellent site to explore Zerubavel’s (1997) six cognitive acts (i.e., perceiving, classifying, reckoning time, attending, assigning meaning, and remembering). In particular, scrapbookers come to classify nearly everything (including people, things, time, and space) in the world around them as either scrapworthy or not. Scrapbooks are a modern narrative form, though versions of scrapbooks have been around for centuries. Scrapbooks are memorials about everyday life. The content of scrapbooks is what is left out of the typical history book but is considered just as memorable by scrapbookers. Scrapbookers are storytellers. These stories could just as easily be passed down orally or recorded on blogs and some scrapbooks combine elements of oral histories and blogs. Ultimately, scrapbooks are memorials about the scrapbooker.

Blythe, Joe. "Doing referring in Murriny Patha conversation." University of Sydney, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/5388.

Full text
Abstract:
Doctor of Philosophy
Successful communication hinges on keeping track of who and what we are talking about. For this reason, person reference sits at the heart of the social sciences. Referring to persons is an interactional process where information is transferred from current speakers to the recipients of their talk. This dissertation concerns itself with the work that is achieved through this transfer of information. The interactional approach adopted is one that combines the “micro” of conversation analysis with the “macro” of genealogically grounded anthropological linguistics. Murriny Patha, a non-Pama-Nyungan language spoken in the north of Australia, is a highly complex polysynthetic language with kinship categories that are grammaticalized as verbal inflections. For referring to persons, as well as names, nicknames, kinterms, minimal descriptions and free pronouns, Murriny Patha speakers make extensive use of pronominal reference markers embedded within polysynthetic verbs. Murriny Patha does not have a formal “mother-in-law” register. There are however numerous taboos on naming kin in avoidance relationships, and on naming and their namesakes. Similarly, there are also taboos on naming the deceased and on naming their namesakes. As a result, for every speaker there is a multitude of people whose names should be avoided. At any one time, speakers of the language have a range of referential options. Speakers’ decisions about which category of reference forms to choose (names, kinterms etc.) are governed by conversational preferences that shape “referential design”. Six preferences – a preference for associating the referent to the co-present conversationalists, a preference for avoiding personal names, a preference for using recognitionals, a preference for being succinct, and a pair of opposed preferences relating to referential specificity – guide speakers towards choosing a name on one occasion, a kinterm on the next occasion and verbal cross-reference on yet another occasion. Different classes of expressions better satisfy particular conversational preferences. There is a systematicity to the referential choices that speakers make. The interactional objectives of interlocutors are enacted through the regular placement of particular forms in particular sequential environments. These objectives are then revealed through the turn-by-turn unfolding of conversational interaction.

Robertson, Carolyn. "Doing church in a new paradigm." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Sociology, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/8339.

Full text
Abstract:
In line with the assertion that the church reflects the values and practices of society this thesis explores the link between new paradigm churches (an emerging expression of church) and three key aspects of contemporary Western society, globalisation, pragmatism, and individualism. The theoretical underpinning for the thesis is drawn from the work of Troeltsch in which he explored the different forms Christianity has taken throughout history. In this regard it proved useful to supplement Troeltsch's analysis in incorporating the notion of 'paradigm' into a consideration of contemporary expressions of 'doing church'- hence the use of the term 'new paradigm church.' In examining the link between church and society criticisms that suggest that new paradigm churches have colluded too much with the values of the surrounding culture are considered. Research findings drawn from interviews with leaders of eight churches in Christchurch, New Zealand are examined in light of these claims. Societal influence is apparent in the findings presented. Evidence of global influence is seen in the programmes, concepts, and attitudes being adopted from other locations. A pragmatic approach is reflected in the widespread use of mission statements and the nature of the programmes being used. Individualism can be seen in the churches, particularly through the use of entertainment as a medium of communication within churches but more through an emphasis on 'meeting felt needs'. The thesis concludes by considering the challenges that faces leaders of new paradigm churches as they seek to be relevant to the world in which they live while at the same time being true to their basic calling that is to play a part in transforming that society.

My dissertation explores the relationship between intentional action and knowledge. I argue that understanding this relationship is not only of central importance to action theory; it is also a means to progress on questions about the nature of knowledge, the mechanisms of oppression, and the foundations of ethics. The opening chapter argues for my view of the nature of intentional action. I show that it is distinguished from nearby phenomena by an aim of control-and that this control turns out to be Anscombean practical knowledge, the special knowledge an agent can have of what she is doing, how, and why. The second chapter considers how my view about the knowledge-action relationship differs from those advocated by 'shifty epistemologists'-theorists who claim that what you know depends on practical factors like what's at stake for you. I argue that my view undermines the motivation for this claim and may debunk it. The third chapter presents a new way of understanding epistemic injustice and describes how epistemic injustice (thus understood) interacts with action's constitutive aim of practical knowledge to cause shackling-a distinctive dilemma faced by marginalized agents that both manifests and constitutes oppression. The fourth chapter shows how my view of the nature of intentional action entails a new kind of constitutivism about practical reason. I raise a worry that this form of constitutivism threatens the existence and/or generality of moral reasons before suggesting some possible ways out.

Full text
Abstract:
Digital media have become an integral part of many people’s everyday lives and constitute an intimate presence therein. Utilizing the concept of digital intimacy to focus on these recent developments, this doctoral dissertation takes the perspectives of feminist cultural studies and affect theory to analyze how digital media are becoming more intimate and how in turn intimacy is remediated within digital cultures. This research brings together three different strategic examples of digital intimacy. The first is chosen from the context of online hate and harassment, and works to counteract digital forms of intimidation. The second is from the world of software development training initiatives tailored for women and designed to make them digitally intimate. The third investigates the digital subculture around ASMR (‘autonomous sensory meridian response’), which is an intimate multi-sensory stimulation induced by such things as online video clips. It is argued that these three initiatives are good illustrations of contemporary gender relations in digital cultures, and also do digital media differently. This  means that they develop and apply sometimes straightforward, sometimes rather playful strategies to counteract gender-based inimicalities (such as forms of discrimination or exclusion, or objectification) within digital cultures. The thesis argues that such digitally intimate strategies can be utilized analytically in order to contribute to contemporary feminist internet politics.

Abstract:

Between 1998 and 2018, archaeologists have done progressively more research with outside communities and discussed why they include non-archaeologists in excavations, historical research, and studies of artifacts. Although public archaeology projects share much in common, the diverse methods, theories, and stakeholder groups they work with often remain implicit and, thereby are less likely to enter into disciplinary discourse. This makes it difficult for practitioners to gain a clear purview of the public archaeology movement as a whole, much less understand its various dimensions. There is especially little attention paid to the institutional imperatives that underpin such approaches. The invisibility of institutions which already have considerable influence over community-based archaeology has implications for current practice, and an acknowledgement of institutional influence may help practitioners and communities alike better confront the structural inequalities that such projects seek to address. In this dissertation, I examine the role of institutions in public archaeology practice in the United States. Using a survey of public archaeology practitioners, analysis of four long-term public archaeology case studies, and systematic review of public archaeology’s historical context I have characterized key intersections between institutional stakeholders and public archaeologists. While institutional forms of support and limitation have played a significant role in public archaeologists’ work, practitioners approach grants, publication opportunities, and other institutionally-mediated forms of support with different values than what is conventional in the broader archaeological field. This work comes at a time when public archaeologies have gained popularity but have yet to be subjected to much detailed, critical analysis. I pursue such an analysis here and contribute to intellectual and methodological architecture that would serve to strengthen this kind of archaeology. Public archaeology is one of many forms of public scholarship across geographic and disciplinary boundaries. My findings advance what is known about public archaeology in the US, and may be useful for understanding it internationally, particularly in the UK, Canada, and Australia, insofar as there is shared conversation among practitioners across national contexts. This work also puts forth a set of approaches for critically examining public-oriented scholarship movements in terms of their commitments, historical contexts, and ethical implications.

Abstract:
In Sweden today women are greatly under-represented within university physics and the discipline of physics is also symbolically associated with men and masculinity. This motivates in-depth investigations of issues of physics, learning and gender. This thesis explores how physics students' simultaneously constitute the practice of physics as enacted in student and research laboratories and their physicist identities in relation to this practice. In particular, it focuses on how these constitutions can be understood as gendered. Previously, physics education research has often limited 'gender perspective' to focusing on comparisons between man and woman students, whereas this study conceptualises gender as an aspect of social identity constitution. A point of departure for the thesis is the theoretical framework which combines situated learning theory and post-structural gender theory. This framework allows for a simultaneous analysis of how students 'do physics' and 'do gender', thereby making a theoretical contribution to physics education research. In the empirical study twenty-two undergraduate and graduate physics students were interviewed about their physics studies, with a particular focus on laboratory work. The analytical outcomes of the study illustrate a wide variety of possible identity constitutions and possible ways of constituting the physicist community of practice. For example, the students expressed conflicting interpretations of what are suitable practices in the student laboratory in terms of the value of practical versus analytical skills. The boundaries of the physicist community of practice are constituted in relation to, for example, other disciplines, interdisciplinary practices and a traditional femininity practice. Thus, the thesis demonstrates the complexity in physics students gendered negotiations of what it can mean to be a physicist. The ambition of the thesis is further to promote discussions about gender and physics, by engaging readers in critical reflections about the practice of physics, and, thus, to inform the teaching practice of physics.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper discusses the development of Native environmental politics on Haida Gwaii, also known as the Queen Charlotte Islands, since the late 1970’s. During that time, concerns among the Haida about the impacts of industrial logging on their culture led to the emergence of a sustained, innovative challenge to the existing regime of resource extraction on the islands as well as the larger colonial structures on which it was premised. As a result, environmental activism became a means for the Haida to pursue decolonization outside the official channels of the land claims process. In particular this paper focuses on the conflict surrounding logging in the area of South Moresby Island culminating in the creation of the Gwaii Haanas National Park, which was the first National Park to be co-managed by the Government of Canada and an indigenous nation. By tracing the development of environmental activism on Haida Gwaii it contributes to an understanding of the ways that recent Native environmental movements have formulated indigenous identity and drawn on cultural traditions as well as their experience of colonialism. It also contributes to debates surrounding co-management and TEK by showing how the development of Haida environmental management structures occurred in conjunction with the development of a Haida environmental politics without which it would not have been capable of delivering on its liberatory promise.

The photovoltaics industry has been growing at extraordinary rates over the past ten years as a result of increased government support for the technology. Yet supporting the technology is expensive and there is uncertainty over the future rate of technological progress for photovoltaics. Experience curves have been an important part of the argument to justify continued government support of as well as private investment in solar technologies. In this thesis, I argue that a more sophisticated understanding of experience curves and their underlying mechanisms will be important if we are to preempt a renewable energy "bubble." I begin by providing a brief history of photovoltaic technology and policies that have supported end photovoltaic end markets. Next, I examine the use of experience curves for photovoltaic technology, finding numerous conceptual inconsistencies. Finally, based on an economic analysis of almost 55,000 photovoltaic systems in the United States, I attempt to disaggregate the dynamics of cost-reduction in photovoltaic systems, with a particular focus on the behavior of the systems integrators/installers. My analysis includes measures for experience, competition, and installer characteristics. This thesis contributes a better understanding of cost dynamics in photovoltaics and calls for a more sober and more sophisticated discussion about cost dynamics when considering renewable energy policy.

Abstract:
The Chapter shows the phenomenon of “Doing Gender” taking place in a part of the Bavaria-Lesson. And what is more, it shows, that boys are “doing girl” and girls are “doing boy”. The chapter doesn’t offer implications for music educators explicitly, but shows an Analytical Short Film (ASF) serving as evidence.
