Abstract:
Abstract This article discusses a newly found Ottoman document. It concerns the oldest—to date—patriarchal diploma of investiture (berat), which was issued for Patriarch Raphael i (1475–76). This and the other two known berats from that epoch constitute a successive set of such documents, and give scholars the opportunity to study the mechanisms of production of patriarchal diplomas of investiture that were so important for the Orthodox Church in the Ottoman period. Furthermore, these documents date from the formative period of the Orthodox Church under Ottoman rule, providing first-hand evidence on how the Church institution became stabilised under the Ottomans.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop a text extraction tool for scanned documents that would extract text and build the keywords corpus and key phrases corpus for the document without manual intervention. Design/methodology/approach For text extraction from scanned documents, a Web-based optical character recognition (OCR) tool was developed. OCR is a well-established technology, so to develop the OCR, Microsoft Office document imaging tools were used. To account for the commonly encountered problem of skew being introduced, a method to detect and correct the skew introduced in the scanned documents was developed and integrated with the tool. The OCR tool was customized to build keywords and key phrases corpus for every document. Findings The developed tool was evaluated using a 100 document corpus to test the various properties of OCR. The tool had above 99 per cent word read accuracy for text only image documents. The customization of the OCR was tested with samples of Microfiches, sample of Journal pages from back volumes and samples from newspaper clips and the results are discussed in the summary. The tool was found to be useful for text extraction and processing. Social implications The scanned documents are converted to keywords and key phrases corpus. The tool could be used to build metadata for scanned documents without manual intervention. Originality/value The tool is used to convert unstructured data (in the form of image documents) to structured data (the document is converted into keywords, and key phrases database). In addition, the image document is converted to editable and searchable document.

Abstract:
Automatic extractive text summarization retrieves a subset of data that represents most notable sentences in the entire document. In the era of digital explosion, which is mostly unstructured textual data, there is a demand for users to understand the huge amount of text in a short time; this demands the need for an automatic text summarizer. From summaries, the users get the idea of the entire content of the document and can decide whether to read the entire document or not. This work mainly focuses on generating a summary from multiple news documents. In this case, the summary helps to reduce the redundant news from the different newspapers. A multi-document summary is more challenging than a single-document summary since it has to solve the problem of overlapping information among sentences from different documents. Extractive text summarization yields the sensitive part of the document by neglecting the irrelevant and redundant sentences. In this paper, we propose a framework for extracting a summary from multiple documents in the Malayalam Language. Also, since the multi-document summarization data set is sparse, methods based on deep learning are difficult to apply. The proposed work discusses the performance of existing standard algorithms in multi-document summarization of the Malayalam Language. We propose a sentence extraction algorithm that selects the top ranked sentences with maximum diversity. The system is found to perform well in terms of precision, recall, and F-measure on multiple input documents.

Abstract:
Incremental document clustering is important in many applications, but particularly so in healthcare contexts where text data is found in abundance, ranging from published research in journals to day-to-day healthcare data such as discharge summaries and nursing notes. In such dynamic environments new documents are constantly added to the set of documents that have been used in the initial cluster formation. Hence it is important to be able to incrementally update the clusters at a low computational cost as new documents are added. In this paper the authors describe a novel, low cost approach for incremental document clustering. Their method is based on conducting singular value decomposition (SVD) incrementally. They dynamically fold in new documents into the existing term-document space and dynamically assign these new documents into pre-defined clusters based on intra-cluster similarity. This saves the cost of re-computing SVD on the entire document set every time updates occur. The authors also provide a way to retrieve documents based on different window sizes with high scalability and good clustering accuracy. They have tested their proposed method experimentally with 960 medical abstracts retrieved from the PubMed medical library. The authors’ incremental method is compared with the default situation where complete re-computation of SVD is done when new documents are added to the initial set of documents. The results show minor decreases in the quality of the cluster formation but much larger gains in computational throughput.

Abstract:
Text clustering is a data mining technique that is becoming more important in present studies. Document clustering makes use of text clustering to divide documents according to the various topics. The choice of words in document clustering is important to ensure that the document can be classified correctly. Three different methods of clustering which are hierarchical clustering, k-means and k-medoids are used and compared in this study in order to identify the best method which produce the best result in document clustering. The three methods are applied on 60 sports articles involving four different types of sports. The k-medoids clustering produced the worst result while k-means clustering is found to be more sensitive towards general words. Therefore, the method of hierarchical clustering is deemed more stable to produce a meaningful result in document clustering analysis.

Abstract:
Today, rapid digitization requires efficient bilingual non-image and image document classification systems. Although many bilingual NLP and image-based systems provide solutions for real-world problems, they primarily focus on text extraction, identification, and recognition tasks with limited document types. This article discusses a journey of these systems and provides an overview of their methods, feature extraction techniques, document sets, classifiers, and accuracy for English-Hindi and other language pairs. The gaps found lead toward the idea of a generic and integrated bilingual English-Hindi document classification system, which classifies heterogeneous documents using a dual class feeder and two character corpora. Its non-image and image modules include pre- and post-processing stages and pre-and post-segmentation stages to classify documents into predefined classes. This article discusses many real-life applications on societal and commercial issues. The analytical results show important findings of existing and proposed systems.

Abstract:
In this digital world, everything including documents, notes is kept in digital form. The requirement of converting these digital documents into processed information is in demand. This process is called as Handwritten digit recognition (HDR). The digital scan document is processed and classified to identify the hand written words into digital text so that it can be used to keep it in the documents format means in computerized font so that everybody can read it properly. In this paper, it is discussed that classifiers like KNN, SVM, CNN are used for HDR. These classifiers are trained with some predefined dataset and then used to process any digital scan document into computer document format. The scanned document is passed through four different stages for recognition where image is preprocessed, segmented and then recognized by classifier. MNIST dataset is used for training purpose. Complete CNN classifier is discussed in this paper. It is found that CNN is very accurate for HDR but still there is a scope to improve the performance in terms of accuracy, complexity and timing.

Abstract:
Summary Objectives: We propose an interlingua-based indexing approach to account for the particular challenges that arise in the design and implementation of cross-language document retrieval systems for the medical domain. Methods: Documents, as well as queries, are mapped to a language-independent conceptual layer on which retrieval operations are performed. We contrast this approach with the direct translation of German queries to English ones which, subsequently, are matched against English documents. Results: We evaluate both approaches, interlingua-based and direct translation, on a large medical document collection, the OHSUMED corpus. A substantial benefit for interlingua-based document retrieval using German queries on English texts is found, which amounts to 93% of the (monolingual) English baseline. Conclusions: Most state-of-the-art cross-language information retrieval systems translate user queries to the language(s) of the target documents. In contradistinction to this approach, translating both documents and user queries into a language-independent, concept-like representation format is more beneficial to enhance cross-language retrieval performance.

The Spanish mission system was a tool of empire. If we consider it oppressive by modern standards, it was—at least in intent—a lesser of the many evils invariably accompanying the historical tactics of imperialism. With the Enlightenment and the new world republican movements of the early nineteenth century, the lot of the “mission Indian” grew worse rather than better. Although along with the other “citizens” of the new American republics he was declared “liberated,” he soon found out that some citizens were more liberated than others. With the rejection of the centralized authority of the Spanish monarchy, land-grabbing became the order of the day and Indian lands were the easiest target.

Abstract:
Contexte.
Context. In human, oral food intake is the ultimate stage of food supply chain and the beginning of food disintegration and the digestion process. During aging, the oral health changes and sometimes eating food can be a real challenge as food can be hard to masticate, humidify or swallow.Objective. The aim of the present study is to determine which oral factors (salivary, dental, tongue strength) have an impact on physiological – ability to form a food bolus – and psychological – pleasure to eat – dimensions of food oral processing in order to select culinary techniques and help elderlies maintaining an appropriate protein intake in spite of the occurrence of poor oral health.Material and method. Resting and stimulated salivary flow, oral status, the ability to form a food bolus, the pleasure induced by food consumption and the nutritional status were measured on 108 elderly people (65-92 years old, living at home, with no acute pathology at the time of the study). In parallel, culinary technics that aimed at improving meat texture were developed and evaluated throughout physical measurements and oral comfort assessment by the elderly volunteers. Results and conclusion. Multivariate analysis highlighted the fact that oral factors (salivary, dental, muscular) play different roles in food oral processing and eating behavior in elderly people. Moreover, the assessment of oral comfort on the culinary technics showed that some technics improve significantly meat tenderness and juiciness. Those results will help the development of food offer tailored to elderly people with or without oral health impairments

Panelli, Martina. "La réécriture comme autoportrait : médias, corps et archives dans le cinéma d'avant-garde féminin." Thesis, Paris 8, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016PA080086/document.

Abstract:
This work aims to study the coincidence between two phenomenons, subjective writing and found footage film, articulating different approaches around themes as filmic self-portrait and subjective writing, gender identity representation, the history and the critique of avant-garde film. Through the link between the notions of réécriture filmique (Marie-Claire Ropars) and entre-images (Raymond Bellour), this thesis problematise one of the main topic of self-portraiture practice: the resemblance bond between the referent and the object of representation. The analysis of “second hand” films – realized in the frame of woman's avant-garde cinema since the eighties – allowed me to articulate this theoretical reflexion in the light of recent debates around found footage film. Following the researches of Christa Blümlinger, I focused notably on the practice of reusing archive films as a form of analysis, critic, and reevaluation of cinema as a dispositif. Secondly, according to Judith Butler, I interpreted repetition as a strategy to discuss and dismantling the underlying mechanisms of gender identity representations. Finally, putting a specific emphasis on the physical and material nature of the work analysed, I highlighted a precise relationship between the material body of the filmic archive and the natural body of the artists. In this sense, the bio-political context of post and trans-feminist self-representation practices permitted me to conceive the natural body as both a surface and a medium of rewriting, shaping and determining an intermediate subjectivity which is linked “fleshly” to technologies as well as it is “freed” from the flesh of the image

Abstract:
The “irrelevant process”, briefly described by George Brecht in Chance-Imagery (1957), is a method forcreating “chance-images”, close to the idea of ”non-intentionality”. Our thesis analyses this description andstudies its issues for the creation of paintings and drawings, through the ideas of « drawing machine » and« found image ». The study of some artistic practices which illustrate this typology brings us to think thatthe irrelevant process involves the adoption of an intentional and aesthetic point of view on processes andtraces which are irrelevant with the creation of images

Abstract:
The literary work discusses the representation and the predestination clinging to the hometown in the novels of François Mauriac, French novelist (1885-1970) and Fouad al Takarli, Iraq; novelist (1927-2008). The starting point is: globalization has changed the world into a small village where the individual seeks to find one's place. Thus there is a strong need to define the native place in order to better protect the existence and identity of modern man. The start is with the following preliminary question: "What is the inherent importance acquired by the hometown in human existence?" based on the answers or the proposed answers, we study the representations of the hometown in selected studies to our work. Combining comparative, theoretical, historical, thematic and analytical questions, we analyze how this theme is presented. The research will be conducted to study the development of the novel on a comparative basis and to highlight the quintessence of the French romantic art, and also to present some of the narrative art in the Arab world, especially in Iraq. The study will probe the aspects and meanings of space and especially the Iiterary space. The study aims to present different images of the hometown in the novels of Mauriac and Takarli. These images emanate from memories and childhood. And they Documentary images recording for a reallife. Finally, the symbolic images reflect the predestined clinging to the hometown

Abstract:
Since almost a century, underwater robots have been developed in order to respond to the specific needs of historical actors of the domain (military, hydrocarbons exploitation, underwater cabling or benthic exploration), without addressing specifically the question of versatility or modularity of the underwater platform. This thesis aims to address these questions on a technological solution dedicated to shallow water or confined environment. In other words, the objective is to realise an underwater system, able to evolve on the mechanical, electronical or software aspects. This requires to properly conceptualise this « versatility » with an abstraction of the control architecture, on the actuation aspect, with the expression of the versatility linked to the actuation systems, or on the software architecture level, with a Service-Oriented-Architecture (SOA) approach, in order to tackle the diversity of the application requirements. This study is based on the Jack system, developed by the Ciscrea Company, which is the industrial partner of this project, and brings the economical aspect as a central requirement. This underlines another view of the versatility question, the development of a range of product for the Ciscrea Company. This thesis proposes the conception, realisation and experimentation of such a versatile underwater system, with test-tank and field validation

Abstract:
Antarctic Bottom Water is the most voluminous water mass of the World Ocean, and it feeds the deepest and slowest component of ocean circulation. The processes that govern its lifecycle are therefore key to the ocean's carbon and heat storage capacity on centennial to multi-millennial timescales. This thesis aims at characterizing and quantifying processes responsible for the destruction (synonymous of lightening and upwelling) of Antarctic Bottom Water in the abyssal ocean. Using an observational estimate of the global ocean thermohaline structure and diagnostics based on the density budget of deep waters, we explore the roles of basin geometry, geothermal heating and mixing by breaking internal waves for the abyssal circulation. We show that the shape of ocean basins largely controls the structure of abyssal upwelling. The contribution of mixing powered by breaking internal waves, though poorly constrained, is estimated to be insufficient to destroy Antarctic Bottom Water at a rate comparable to that of its formation. Geothermal heating plays an important role for the upwelling of waters covering large seafloor areas. The results suggest a reappraisal of the role of mixing in deep straits and sills, but also of the fundamental role of basin geometry, for the lightening and transport of abyssal waters

The new generation of interferometers should allow us to detect stochastic gravitational wave backgrounds that are expected to arise from a large number of random, independent, unresolved events of astrophysical or cosmological origin. Most detection methods for gravitational waves are based upon the assumption of Gaussian gravitational wave stochastic background signals and noise processes. Our main objective is to improve the methods that can be used to detect gravitational backgrounds in the presence of non-Gaussian distributions. We first maintain the assumption of Gaussian noise distributions so as to better focus on the impact of deviations from normality of the signal distribution in the context of the standard cross-correlation detection statistic. Using a 4th-order Edgeworth expansion of the unknown density for the signal and noise distributions, we first derive an explicit expression for the non-Gaussian likelihood ratio statistic, which is obtained as a function of the variance, but also skewness and kurtosis of the unknown signal and noise distributions. We use numerical procedures to generate maximum likelihood estimates for the gravitational wave distribution parameters for a set of symmetric heavy-tailed distributions, and we find that the fourth cumulant can be estimated with reasonable precision when the ratio between the signal and the noise variances is larger than 1%, which should be useful for analyzing the constraints on astrophysical and cosmological models. In a second step, we analyze the efficiency of the standard cross-correlation statistic in situations that also involve non-Gaussian noise distributions

Abstract:
Accounting records hold a central place within the framework of business life. For a variety of reasons, it is interesting to consider these accounting records within the legal scope. First of all, the drafting of these documents is subjected to a special regulation which keystone is to present a true and fair view of the accounts. The person drafting the accounts should always keep in mind this purpose and the necessary readability of thesaid documents. This aim can sometimes lead this person to depart from the accounting rule. This originality of the implementation of the accounting rule has to be coupled with an originality of the subsequent accounting qualifications. The rights and obligations drawn up within the accounting records are subjected to a reading grid which goes beyond the classical legal categories. This specificity is opening new horizons to the legal expert and leads to a reconsideration of the traditional understanding of the accounting activity. This interest is strengthened at the time of the receipt of the accounting documents which suggests questioning ourselves about the effects of the latter. On the one hand, which is the legal force of an accounting record, in other words, what is its probative force? Can an accounting record be qualified as a legal transaction or perhaps even more as a unilateral contract? On the other hand, what are the traditional functions of the aggregates revealed by the accounting documents? Should these traditional functions be challenged by the IFRS standards? Finally, which sanctions are foreseen as to accounting documents?

Abstract:
In Mexico, 40% of the population in primary and secondary schools suffer from bullying; verbal assaults represent the form of aggression with a higher percentage among school children (CNDH, 2010). This form of harassment may not leave evident scars as physical assaults; nonetheless, the consequences of verbal violence can also be detrimental. Television and the violent content presented on it have been considered a harmful source of knowledge for children that may allow them to imitate, learn, and reinforce unacceptable behaviours. In this investigation, an analysis of the discourse presented in the cartoon The Fairly OddParents was carried out aiming to find out if children are being exposed to verbal aggressions. Furthermore, a group discussion was carried out in order to know what perceptions children have towards violent acts in the cartoon. The results obtained from the discourse analysis showed that children who watch this television show are being exposed to several forms of direct and indirect verbal violence. Additionally, what children commented on the group discussion showed that most of the times they see violence as an unaccepted conduct, although there are some cases where they think it is acceptable
(cont.) Also, it was observed that younger children do not always understand what is shown and that they form their own conclusions. The results obtained from the analysis of discourse as well as from the group discussion suggest that media education could be used as a tool to eradicate and prevent the violent practices among school children..

Abstract:
AbstractThis contribution presents the validation of the age at death of Geert Adriaans BOOMGAARD (GAB), a seaman who reached the age of 110. He was born in Groningen on 21 September 1788 and died in the same city on 3 February 1899. A remarkable number of documents have been found that cover the full span of GAB’s life, and thus make it possible to validate his reported exceptional age. In the first step of the validation, a comparison of the baptism and death records shows that the information provided is consistent, even if the spelling of the surnames of his parents reported in the two records is not identical. The reconstitution of GAB’s family and the dates of birth of his siblings also support the validity of GAB’s reported age at death. The demographic information covers the period between 1818 (the year of his first marriage) and 1837 (the year of birth of his last child). We found few documents that mention him during his early life before his first marriage, including a document from 1791 indicating that his father named his new boat De Jonge Geert as well as a list of conscripts from 1811 where his name appeared. By contrast, we found numerous documents covering the period from 1837 to 1899 that are related to his career as a seaman; the marriages of children; his entry into a nursing home; and various interviews, photos, and articles on his life that appeared in the press. All of these documents support the validity of GAB’s reported year of birth and age at death. Thus, GAB might be considered the first thoroughly validated supercentenarian in the history of humankind.

AbstractSeveral automatic verification tools have been recently developed to verify subsets of LLVM’s optimizations. However, none of these tools has robust support to verify memory optimizations. In this paper, we present the first SMT encoding of LLVM’s memory model that 1) is sufficiently precise to validate all of LLVM’s intra-procedural memory optimizations, and 2) enables bounded translation validation of programs with up to hundreds of thousands of lines of code. We implemented our new encoding in Alive2, a bounded translation validation tool, and used it to uncover 21 new bugs in LLVM memory optimizations, 10 of which have been already fixed. We also found several inconsistencies in LLVM IR’s official specification document (LangRef) and fixed LLVM’s code and the document so they are in agreement.

Abstract:
AbstractThe vulnerability of agriculture systems in Africa to climate change is directly and indirectly affecting the availability and diversity of plants and plant products available in local markets. In this chapter, markets in Benin City and environs were assessed to document the availability of plants and plant products. Markets were grouped into urban, suburban, and rural with each group having four markets. Majority of the plant and plant product vendors were women and 88 plant species belonging to 42 families were found. Their scientific and common names were documented as well as the parts of the plant and associated products available in the markets. Most of the plant and plant products found in local markets belong to major plant families. Urban markets had the highest diversity of plants and plant products. Three categories of plants and plant products were documented. Around 67% of the plants and plant products were categorized as whole plant/plant parts, 28% as processed plant parts, while 5% as reprocessed plant/plant parts. It was revealed that 86% of these plants are used as foods, 11% are for medicinal purposes, while 3% is used for other purposes. About 35% of plants and plant products across the markets were fruits, which is an indication that city and environs are a rich source of fruits. The local knowledge and practices associated with the plants and plant products can contribute towards formulating a strategic response for climate change impacts on agriculture, gender, poverty, food security, and plant diversity.

AbstractThis chapter describes the Russian RuThes thesaurus created as a linguistic and terminological resource for automatic document processing. Its structure utilizes two popular paradigms for computer thesauri: concept-based units, a small set of relation types, rules for including multiword expression as in information retrieval thesauri; and language-motivated units, detailed sets of synonyms, description of ambiguous words as in WordNet-like thesauri. The development of the RuThes thesaurus is supported for many years: new concepts, new senses, and multiword expressions found in contemporary texts are introduced regularly. The chapter shows some examples of representing newly appeared concepts related to important internal and international events.

Abstract:
AbstractInter-team coordination in large-scale software development can be challenging when relying on agile development methods that emphasize iterative and frequent delivery in autonomous teams. Previous research has introduced the concept of coordination strategies, which refer to a set of coordination mechanisms to manage dependencies. We report on a case study in a large-scale agile development program with 16 development teams. Through interviews, meeting observations, and supplemental document analyses, we explore the challenges to inter-team coordination and how dependencies are managed. We found four coordination strategies: 1) aligning autonomous teams, 2) maintaining overview in the large-scale setting, 3) managing prioritizations, and 4) managing architecture and technical dependencies. This study extends previous research on coordination strategies within teams to the inter-team level. We propose that large-scale organizations can use coordination strategies to understand how they coordinate across teams and manage their unique coordination situation.

Abstract:
Contemporary information databases contain many millions of electronic documents. Locating information on the Internet today is problematic, due to the enormous number of documents it contains. Several other studies have found that associating documents with a subject or list of topics can improve lo-catability of information on the Internet (Drori, 2000a 2000b 2000c). Effective cataloguing of information is performed manually, requiring extensive resources. Consequently, most information is currently not catalogued. This paper aims to present a software tool that automatically locates the subject of a document and to show the results of a test performed, using the software tool, TextAnalysis, specially developed for this purpose. The main purpose of this study is to inform clients of the subject of the corpus of texts it obtains from search engines as a search results list.

Abstract:
Pipeline operators of both hazardous liquid and gas pipelines occasionally need to update and improve the process documents within their integrity management programs (e.g. written integrity management plan, risk methodology, etc.). Typically these needs arise in the spirit of continuous improvement (e.g. internal audit findings), or following a large merger or acquisition that requires version consolidation for one or more integrity management process documents. The authors have identified essential elements that provide a proven approach for successfully updating and improving integrity management process documents, including: 1. Gap Analysis 2. Gap Filling with Stakeholder Involvement 3. Implementation Plan DNV GL has found these elements can be applied effectively to small scale (e.g. an update of an operator’s in-line inspection process) and large scale updates (e.g. concurrently updating the entire set of integrity management program process documents). After identifying the process documents for updating, the first element is a gap analysis to identify gaps related to compliance and industry standard practices. The gap analysis may also identify inconsistencies between multiple legacy documents (which is often the case after a merger). The next element is to fill each of the gaps and resolve each of the inconsistencies identified during the gap analysis. The primary stakeholders for the target process(es) should provide input to this step. Significant changes require increased stakeholder involvement and buy-in. Gap filling concludes with creating revised (or new) integrity management process document(s). The last element is implementation of the revised (or new) integrity management process document(s). The revised (or new) integrity management process(es) may require the operator to add resources or new expertise to their organization. The implementation plan will identify potential additional resources and/or training requirements. The implementation plan will also identify benchmarks and goals to allow the operator to effectively monitor the implementation of the revised (or new) process and ensure it achieves the intended results. The following paper explains in detail how to execute each element and provides examples of supporting work materials to efficiently create effective and compliant integrity management process documents.

Abstract:
The DNV-RP-C203 Fatigue Design of Offshore Steel Structures is being used by a number of different companies for fatigue assessment of different types of structures. This has resulted in questions to DNV about background for the different sections in the document. It is therefore important that the basis for this document is open to the industry. Quite a lot of the background material has also been published earlier at conferences and in journals. In some situations it has been found that the content can be improved to better suite the industry. The document is presented in an electronic version making revisions easy. Therefore it has been revised several times since the last official presentation of a revision in 2005. The present paper gives an overview of the most significant changes made in the document since the 2005 revision. Some of these changes are already included in the present version of DNV-RP-C203. The remaining changes will be included in a revision dated 2010.

The last revision of the DNV recommended practice “Fatigue Analysis of Offshore Steel Structures” is from October 2001. During use of this standard some feed back from designers around the world have been received. Also some new research in the area has been performed in the time interval from it was first developed. It is also realised that the document is being used for fatigue design of some other types of details and structures than was thought of when the document was originally developed. Therefore it was now found convenient to revise the document to incorporate the experience gained and new research and developments made in the area of fatigue of offshore structures the last 7 years since the main content for this recommended practice was developed.

Abstract:
Julius Stockhausen (1826–1906) is known as the first singer who performed Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin as a whole cycle in a public concert. A celebrated lieder singer, friend of Brahms, author of pedagogical works, and most prominent German singing teacher of his time, Stockhausen’s influence on lieder singing cannot be overestimated. Recently a manuscript with “Tempo indications for Die schöne Müllerin by Julius Stockhausen” has been found. The document, containing tempo suggestions for every single lied of the song cycle, was written down by the German singing professor Clara Klatte (1867–1945). Some of the suggested tempi are surprisingly fast. In this article the authenticity of the document is discussed under several aspects. The Klatte-Stockhausen document is published here for the first time.

Abstract:
Formulating and solving engineering problems and designing solutions that meet the established requirements are important skills that graduating engineering students need to possess. However, there are noticeable gaps in the literature with respect to understanding how the formulation of design problems and establishment of requirements affect the final design solution in undergraduate design education. This paper is an initial step to understand the influence of level of detail of problem statement and requirements on the level of detail of final solution in capstone design projects. In doing so, a document analysis of final reports from capstone design class collected over a period of ten years, 1999 to 2008, is conducted. A data compression approach is developed to allow for the mapping of level of detail of problem statement and requirements to the level of detail of final solution. The findings of this research indicate that a low level of detail problem statement and requirements leads to no greater than a medium level of detail in the final solution. A high level of detail of final solution is more likely to result from either a high or medium level of detail of problem statement and requirements. Additionally, it was found that a high level of detail final solution is more likely to result in a high percentage of requirements satisfied. These findings are used to make several recommendations to improve the level of detail of the problem statement and requirements so a high level of detail final solution is developed while satisfying a great number of requirements. This assists in ensuring that students possess the skills needed before entering the professional workforce.

Wave particles move in circles, and for steep waves they also move with a drift in the wave direction. This drift can be found by second order Stokes theory. In this document it is questioned if Stokes’ theory gives reliable drift on the free surface, or if an extra term should be introduced in the equations. The CFD program COMFLOW is used to show that classic Stokes theory may be insufficient for calculating drift on the free surface.

Abstract:
Subcooled flow boiling experiments with water at 0.2atm pressure assess the utility of fine filament screen-laminate enhanced surfaces as high performance boiling surfaces. Experiments are conducted on vertically oriented, multi-layer copper laminates in distilled water. The channel Reynolds number is varied from 2,000 to 20,000; and, subcooling ranges from 2K to 35K. Boiling performance is documented for ten different surfaces having pore hydraulic diameters ranging from 39μm to 105μm, and surface area enhancement ratios ranging from 5 to 37. Heat flux of up to 453W/cm2 is achieved at 35K subcooling at a channel Reynolds number of 6,000, which represents a 3.5-fold increase in Critical Heat Flux (CHF) over that of saturated pool boiling on the same surface. Results show that CHF is strongly correlated with subcooling; and the effect of subcooling is more pronounced as flow intensity is increased. It is found that CHF enhancement due to subcooling and flow intensity is intrinsically linked to the surface area enhancement ratio, which has an optimum that depends on the degree of subcooling. High speed video imagery (1200fps) and long range microscopy are use to document bubble dynamics. Boiling mechanisms inherent to subcooling, enhanced surface geometry, and CHF are discussed.

The fluid dynamics for turbulent flow through rod bundles representative of those used in pressurized water reactors is examined using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The rod bundles of the pressurized water reactor examined in this study consist of a square array of parallel rods that are held on a constant pitch by support grids spaced axially along the rod bundle. Split-vane pair support grids are often used to create swirling flow in the rod bundle in an effort to improve the heat transfer characteristics for the rod bundle during both normal operating conditions and in accident condition scenarios. Computational fluid dynamics simulations for a two subchannel portion of the rod bundle were used to model the flow downstream of a split-vane pair support grid. A high quality computational mesh was used to investigate the choice of turbulence model appropriate for the complex swirling flow in the rod bundle subchannels. Results document a central swirling flow structure in each of the subchannels downstream of the split-vane pairs. Strong lateral flows along the surface of the rods, as well as impingement regions of lateral flow on the rods are documented. In addition, regions of lateral flow separation and low axial velocity are documented next to the rods. Results of the CFD are compared to experimental particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements documenting the lateral flow structures downstream of the split-vane pairs. Good agreement is found between the computational simulation and experimental measurements for locations close to the support grid.

Abstract:
The Sonoran Desert Network (SODN) conducted a vegetation mapping and characterization effort at the two districts of Saguaro National Park from 2010 to 2018. This project was completed under the National Park Service (NPS) Vegetation Mapping Inventory, which aims to complete baseline mapping and classification inventories at more than 270 NPS units. The vegetation map data were collected to provide park managers with a digital map product that meets national standards of spatial and thematic accuracy, while also placing the vegetation into a regional and national context. A total of 97 distinct vegetation communities were described: 83 exclusively at the Rincon Mountain District, 9 exclusively at the Tucson Mountain District, and 5 occurring in both districts. These communities ranged from low-elevation creosote (Larrea tridentata) shrub-lands spanning broad alluvial fans to mountaintop Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) forests on the slopes of Rincon Peak. All 97 communities were described at the association level, each with detailed narratives including lists of species found in each association, their abundance, landscape features, and overall community structural characteristics. Only 15 of the 97 vegetation types were existing “accepted” types within the National Vegetation Classification (NVC). The others are newly described and specific to Saguaro National Park (and will be proposed for formal status within the NVC). This document is Volume II of three volumes comprising the Saguaro National Park Vegetation Mapping Inventory. This volume provides two-page summaries of the 97 associations identified and mapped during the project, and detailed in Volume I. Summaries are presented by district, starting with the Tucson Mountain District. These summaries are abridged versions of the full association descriptions found in Volume III.

Lichand, Guilherme, Carlos Alberto Dória, Onicio Leal Neto, and João Cossi. The Impacts of Remote Learning in Secondary Education: Evidence from Brazil during the Pandemic. Inter-American Development Bank, June 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0003344.

Full text
Abstract:
The goal of this paper is to document the pedagogic impacts of the remote learning strategy used by an state department of education in Brazil during the pandemic. We found that dropout risk increased by 365% under remote learning. While risk increased with local disease activity, most of it can be attributed directly to the absence of in-person classes: we estimate that dropout risk increased by no less than 247% across the State, even at the low end of the distribution of per capita Covid-19 cases. Average standardized test scores decreased by 0.32 standard deviation, as if students had only learned 27.5% of the in-person equivalent under remote learning. Learning losses did not systematically increase with local disease activity, attesting that they are in fact the outcome of remote learning, rather than a consequence of other health or economic impacts of Covid-19. Authorizing schools to partially reopen for in-person classes increased high-school students test scores by 20% relative to the control group.

Komba, Aneth, and Richard Shukia. Accountability Relationships in 3Rs Curriculum Reform Implementation: Implication for Pupils’ Acquisition of Literacy and Numeracy Skills in Tanzania’s Primary Schools. Abstract:
This study responded to one key research question: What are the accountability relationships between the actors in implementing the 3Rs curriculum reform? A qualitative research approach informed the study, using key informant interviews, focus group discussion and document review. The data were analysed using thematic and content analysis. The study established that the key actors in implementing the 3Rs curriculum are the government institutions and the development partners. These actors provide teaching, learning materials and support in the provision of in-service teacher training. Yet, the pupils’ and teachers’ materials prepared by the donor programmes were never authorised by the Commissioner for Education. The study also found that the implementation of the 3Rs was very uneven across the country, with some regions receiving support from both the government and donors, and others receiving support from the government only. Consequently, schools in areas that were exposed to more than one type of support benefited from various teaching and learning materials, which led to confusion regarding when to use them. Moreover, the initiatives by several donors exclusively focus on public schools, which use Kiswahili as the medium of instruction and hence, there existed inequality across the various types of schools. Furthermore, the funds for implementing the reform were provided by both the development partners and the government. The Global Partnership for Education (GPE)—Literacy and Numeracy Education Support (LANES) Program— provided a large proportion of the funds. However, the funds remained insufficient to meet the training needs. As a result, the training was provided for only few days and to a few teachers. Consequently, the sustainability of the reform, in the absence of donor funding, remains largely questionable.

Ayoul-Guilmard, Q., S. Ganesh, M. Nuñez, R. Tosi, F. Nobile, R. Rossi, and C. Soriano. D5.3 Report on theoretical work to allow the use of MLMC with adaptive mesh refinement. Scipedia, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.23967/exaqute.2021.2.002.

Full text
Abstract:
This documents describes several studies undertaken to assess the applicability of MultiLevel Monte Carlo (MLMC) methods to problems of interest; namely in turbulent fluid flow over civil engineering structures. Several numerical experiments are presented wherein the convergence of quantities of interest with mesh parameters are studied at different Reynolds’ numbers and geometries. It was found that MLMC methods could be used successfully for low Reynolds’ number flows when combined with appropriate Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) strategies. However, the hypotheses for optimal MLMC performance were found to not be satisfied at higher turbulent Reynolds’ numbers despite the use of AMR strategies. Recommendations are made for future research directions based on these studies. A tentative outline for an MLMC algorithm with adapted meshes is made, as well as recommendations for alternatives to MLMC methods for cases where the underlying assumptions for optimal MLMC performance are not satisfied.

Idris, Iffat. Documentation of Survivors of Gender-based Violence (GBV). Institute of Development Studies (IDS), July 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2021.103.

Full text
Abstract:
This review is largely based on grey literature, in particular policy documents and reports by international development organizations. While there was substantial literature on approaches and principles to GBV documentation, there was less on remote service delivery such as helplines – much of this only in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, very little was found on actual examples of GBV documentation in developing contexts. By definition, gender featured strongly in the available literature; the particular needs of persons with disabilities were also addressed in discussions of overall GBV responses, but far less in GBV documentation. GBV documentation refers to the recording of data on individual GBV incidents in order to provide/refer survivors with/to appropriate support, and the collection of data of GBV incidents for analysis and to improve GBV responses. The literature notes that there are significant risks associated with GBV documentation, in relation to data protection. Failure to ensure information security can expose survivors, in particular, to harm, e.g. reprisal attacks by perpetrators, stigma, and ostracism by their families/ communities. This means that GBV documentation must be carried out with great care. A number of principles should always be applied when documenting GBV cases in order to protect survivors and prevent potential negative effects: do no harm, survivor-centered approach, survivor autonomy, informed consent, non-discrimination, confidentiality, and data protection (information security).

Gidengil, Courtney, Matthew Bidwell Goetz, Margaret Maglione, Sydne J. Newberry, Peggy Chen, Kelsey O’Hollaren, Nabeel Qureshi, et al. Safety of Vaccines Used for Routine Immunization in the United States: An Update. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), May 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.23970/ahrqepccer244.

Full text
Abstract:
Objective. To conduct a systematic review of the literature on the safety of vaccines recommended for routine immunization in the United States, updating the 2014 Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) report on the topic. Data sources. We searched MEDLINE®, Embase®, CINAHL®, Cochrane CENTRAL, Web of Science, and Scopus through November 9, 2020, building on the prior 2014 report; reviewed existing reviews, trial registries, and supplemental material submitted to AHRQ; and consulted with experts. Review methods. This report addressed three Key Questions (KQs) on the safety of vaccines currently in use in the United States and included in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) recommended immunization schedules for adults (KQ1), children and adolescents (KQ2), and pregnant women (KQ3). The systematic review was supported by a Technical Expert Panel that identified key adverse events of particular concern. Two reviewers independently screened publications; data were extracted by an experienced subject matter expert. Studies of vaccines that used a comparator and reported the presence or absence of adverse events were eligible. We documented observed rates and assessed the relative risks for key adverse events. We assessed the strength of evidence (SoE) across the existing findings from the prior 2014 report and the new evidence from this update. The systematic review is registered in PROSPERO (CRD42020180089). Results. A large body of evidence is available to evaluate adverse events following vaccination. Of 56,608 reviewed citations, 189 studies met inclusion criteria for this update, adding to data in the prior 2014 report, for a total of 338 included studies reported in 518 publications. Regarding vaccines recommended for adults (KQ1), we found either no new evidence of increased risk for key adverse events with varied SoE or insufficient evidence in this update, including for newer vaccines such as recombinant influenza vaccine, adjuvanted inactivated influenza vaccine, and recombinant adjuvanted zoster vaccine. The prior 2014 report noted a signal for anaphylaxis for hepatitis B vaccines in adults with yeast allergy and for tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis vaccines. Regarding vaccines recommended for children and adolescents (KQ2), we found either no new evidence of increased risk for key adverse events with varied SoE or insufficient evidence, including for newer vaccines such as 9-valent human papillomavirus vaccine and meningococcal B vaccine. The prior 2014 report noted signals for rare adverse events—such as anaphylaxis, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, and febrile seizures—with some childhood vaccines. Regarding vaccines recommended for pregnant women (KQ3), we found no evidence of increased risk for key adverse events with varied SoE among either pregnant women or their infants following administration of tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis vaccines during pregnancy. Conclusion. Across this large body of research, we found no new evidence of increased risk since the prior 2014 report for key adverse events following administration of vaccines that are routinely recommended. Signals from the prior report remain unchanged for rare adverse events, which include anaphylaxis in adults and children, and febrile seizures and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura in children. There is no evidence of increased risk of adverse events for vaccines currently recommended in pregnant women. There remains insufficient evidence to draw conclusions about some rare potential adverse events.

Idris, Iffat. Increasing Birth Registration for Children of Marginalised Groups in Pakistan. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), July 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2021.102.

Full text
Abstract:
This review looks at approaches to promote birth registration among marginalised groups, in order to inform programming in Pakistan. It draws on a mixture of academic and grey literature, in particular reports by international development organizations. While there is extensive literature on rates of birth registration and the barriers to this, and consensus on approaches to promote registration, the review found less evidence of measures specifically aimed at marginalised groups. Gender issues are addressed to some extent, particularly in understanding barriers to registration, but the literature was largely disability-blind. The literature notes that birth registration is considered as a fundamental human right, allowing access to services such as healthcare and education; it is the basis for obtaining other identity documents, e.g. driving licenses and passports; it protects children, e.g. from child marriage; and it enables production of vital statistics to support government planning and resource allocation. Registration rates are generally lower than average for vulnerable children, e.g. from minority groups, migrants, refugees, children with disabilities. Discriminatory policies against minorities, restrictions on movement, lack of resources, and lack of trust in government are among the ‘additional’ barriers affecting the most marginalised. Women, especially unmarried women, also face greater challenges in getting births registered. General approaches to promoting birth registration include legal and policy reform, awareness-raising activities, capacity building of registration offices, integration of birth registration with health services/education/social safety nets, and the use of digital technology to increase efficiency and accessibility.

Niles, John S., and J. M. Pogodzinski. Steps to Supplement Park-and-Ride Public Transit Access with Ride-and-Ride Shuttles. Mineta Transportation Institute, July 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.31979/mti.2021.1950.

Full text
Abstract:
Public transit ridership in California declined in the five years before the pandemic of 2020–21 and dropped significantly further after the pandemic began. A sharp downward step in the level of transit boarding occurred after February 2020, and continues to the date of this report as a result of the public-health guidance on social distancing, expanded work-at-home, and a travel mode shift from public transit to private cars. A critical issue has come to the foreground of public transportation policy, namely, how to increase the quality and geographic reach of transit service to better serve the essential trips of mobility disadvantaged citizens who do not have access to private vehicle travel. The research focus of this report is an examination of the circumstances where fixed route bus route service could cost-effectively be replaced by on-demand microtransit, with equivalent overall zone-level efficiency and a higher quality of complete trip service. Research methods were reviews of documented agency experience, execution of simple simulations, and sketch-level analysis of 2019 performance reported in the National Transit Database. Available evidence is encouraging and suggestive, but not conclusive. The research found that substitutions of flexible microtransit for fixed route buses are already being piloted across the U.S., with promising performance results. The findings imply that action steps could be taken in California to expand and refine an emphasis on general purpose microtransit in corridors and zones with a relatively high fraction of potential travelers who are mobility disadvantaged, and where traditional bus routes are capturing fewer than 15 boardings per vehicle hour. To be sufficiently productive as fixed route replacements, microtransit service technologies in the same or larger zones need to be capable of achieving vehicle boardings of five per hour, a challenge worth addressing with technology applications. Delivery of microtransit service can be undertaken through contracts with a growing set of private sector firms, which are developing processes to merge general purpose customers with those now assigned to ADA-required paratransit and Medi-Cal-supported non-emergency medical transport.

Saville, Alan, and Caroline Wickham-Jones, eds. Palaeolithic and Mesolithic Scotland : Scottish Archaeological Research Framework Panel Report. Society for Antiquaries of Scotland, June 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.9750/scarf.06.2012.163.

Full text
Abstract:
Why research Palaeolithic and Mesolithic Scotland? Palaeolithic and Mesolithic archaeology sheds light on the first colonisation and subsequent early inhabitation of Scotland. It is a growing and exciting field where increasing Scottish evidence has been given wider significance in the context of European prehistory. It extends over a long period, which saw great changes, including substantial environmental transformations, and the impact of, and societal response to, climate change. The period as a whole provides the foundation for the human occupation of Scotland and is crucial for understanding prehistoric society, both for Scotland and across North-West Europe. Within the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic periods there are considerable opportunities for pioneering research. Individual projects can still have a substantial impact and there remain opportunities for pioneering discoveries including cemeteries, domestic and other structures, stratified sites, and for exploring the huge evidential potential of water-logged and underwater sites. Palaeolithic and Mesolithic archaeology also stimulates and draws upon exciting multi-disciplinary collaborations. Panel Task and Remit The panel remit was to review critically the current state of knowledge and consider promising areas of future research into the earliest prehistory of Scotland. This was undertaken with a view to improved understanding of all aspects of the colonization and inhabitation of the country by peoples practising a wholly hunter-fisher-gatherer way of life prior to the advent of farming. In so doing, it was recognised as particularly important that both environmental data (including vegetation, fauna, sea level, and landscape work) and cultural change during this period be evaluated. The resultant report, outlines the different areas of research in which archaeologists interested in early prehistory work, and highlights the research topics to which they aspire. The report is structured by theme: history of investigation; reconstruction of the environment; the nature of the archaeological record; methodologies for recreating the past; and finally, the lifestyles of past people – the latter representing both a statement of current knowledge and the ultimate aim for archaeologists; the goal of all the former sections. The document is reinforced by material on-line which provides further detail and resources. The Palaeolithic and Mesolithic panel report of ScARF is intended as a resource to be utilised, built upon, and kept updated, hopefully by those it has helped inspire and inform as well as those who follow in their footsteps. Future Research The main recommendations of the panel report can be summarized under four key headings:  Visibility: Due to the considerable length of time over which sites were formed, and the predominant mobility of the population, early prehistoric remains are to be found right across the landscape, although they often survive as ephemeral traces and in low densities. Therefore, all archaeological work should take into account the expectation of Palaeolithic and Mesolithic ScARF Panel Report iv encountering early prehistoric remains. This applies equally to both commercial and research archaeology, and to amateur activity which often makes the initial discovery. This should not be seen as an obstacle, but as a benefit, and not finding such remains should be cause for question. There is no doubt that important evidence of these periods remains unrecognised in private, public, and commercial collections and there is a strong need for backlog evaluation, proper curation and analysis. The inadequate representation of Palaeolithic and Mesolithic information in existing national and local databases must be addressed.  Collaboration: Multi-disciplinary, collaborative, and cross- sector approaches must be encouraged – site prospection, prediction, recognition, and contextualisation are key areas to this end. Reconstructing past environments and their chronological frameworks, and exploring submerged and buried landscapes offer existing examples of fruitful, cross-disciplinary work. Palaeolithic and Mesolithic archaeology has an important place within Quaternary science and the potential for deeply buried remains means that geoarchaeology should have a prominent role.  Innovation: Research-led projects are currently making a substantial impact across all aspects of Palaeolithic and Mesolithic archaeology; a funding policy that acknowledges risk and promotes the innovation that these periods demand should be encouraged. The exploration of lesser known areas, work on different types of site, new approaches to artefacts, and the application of novel methodologies should all be promoted when engaging with the challenges of early prehistory.  Tackling the ‘big questions’: Archaeologists should engage with the big questions of earliest prehistory in Scotland, including the colonisation of new land, how lifestyles in past societies were organized, the effects of and the responses to environmental change, and the transitions to new modes of life. This should be done through a holistic view of the available data, encompassing all the complexities of interpretation and developing competing and testable models. Scottish data can be used to address many of the currently topical research topics in archaeology, and will provide a springboard to a better understanding of early prehistoric life in Scotland and beyond.
