Ginelli, Elisabetta, ed. La ricerca a fronte della sfida ambientale. Florence: Firenze University Press, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.36253/978-88-8453-763-8.

Abstract:
"La ricerca a fronte della sfida ambientale", the third volume in the DOTTA series, this publication documents the third edition of the Osdotta seminar co-ordinated by the Polytechnic of Milan, held in Lecco on 12-13-14 September 2007. The acronym of the Monitoring Centre of the Doctorate in Architectural Technology (Osservatorio del Dottorato in Tecnologia dell'Architettura), Osdotta was generated by the need to create a space for cultural exchange in relation to research contents and methods pertinent to technological disciplines. An experience acknowledged as a site of scientific interconnection and networked structure, it sets itself the goal of exploring the complexity of the research on multiple scales, investigating and focusing emerging issues and studying the national training scenario so as to boost the professional level of the research. The 2007 edition of the national seminar demonstrates the consolidation of an inter-site education/training experiment of an innovative character that materialises in the rendering of the results of exchange and dialogue on a theme with a wealth of faceted values: the environment, in the form of a challenge that explores the relation with technology.

Gross, Raphael. The “True Enemy”. Edited by Jens Meierhenrich and Oliver Simons. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199916931.013.29.

Abstract:
This chapter offers a fresh analysis of the structural significance of antisemitism for the work of Carl Schmitt. Following the end of the Nazi state, Schmitt denied both his National Socialist and his public antisemitic engagement, constructing elaborate autobiographical legends. Many researchers have rejected any relationship between the political-legal theorist’s publications and his antisemitism. Critical voices represented a small minority of Schmitt researchers. This situation has essentially not changed despite controversy sparked by the publication in 2000 of the author’s doctoral dissertation, with its argument that encoded antisemitic ideas play a prominent role in Schmitt’s writings. Scholars skeptical of this argument have insisted that no clear evidence exists for Schmitt’s antisemitism before 1933. But as this chapter demonstrates, Schmitt’s diaries are replete with often crude and vehement antisemitic ideas. Key terms and concepts in Schmitt’s discursive arsenal must now be read in a very different light.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the past few decades, transition metal catalyzed C–H activation has been immensely investigated due to the ability to functionalize relatively unreactive C-H bonds whilst simplifying synthetic schemes and making the synthetic pathway more economical. Nowadays, a great emphasis has been placed on substitution of noble metal catalysts (Pd, Rh, Ru, etc.) with more abundant and cheaper alternatives (Cu, Co, Ni). The aim of the Doctoral Thesis is the development of novel cobalt catalyzed C-H bond functionalization methodology. The Doctoral Thesis is prepared as a collection of publications. The main results of the Thesis were summarized in 4 scientific publications, 3 review articles and 2 book chapters.

Full text
Abstract:
The Doctoral Thesis has been prepared as a collection of seven thematically related scientific publications. As a result of the conducted studies an essential contribution to explanation of polymer material triboelectrification mechanisms has been created by showing the influence of parameters like hardness, elastic modulus, surface roughness, macromolecular ordering, and crosslinking degree. A novel approach to construct high-performance triboelectric generator (TEG) devices utilizing ferroelectric effect synergy with triboelectricity is outlined.

Briggs, Andrew, Hans Halvorson, and Andrew Steane. How is science to be carried forward, and its conclusions reported? Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198808282.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
The chapter appraises science as an intellectual activity that is appropriately carried out on its own terms. Consequently, it is not appropriate to introduce references to God as a component part of a mathematical proof, nor of a system of forces in the natural world, nor of a sequence of impersonal processes in the biosphere. This does not mean that it is inappropriate to be thankful to God and to celebrate all these aspects of the world as gifts. They can be employed as opportunities to express appreciation through studying and understanding them better in their own right. Nevertheless, there may be processes, such as those which shape a person’s self-identity, in which it is appropriate to recognize God’s more direct role. Good practice concerning acknowledgements sections in scientific publications such as doctoral theses and journal articles is then discussed.

Melchert, Christopher. Hadith, Piety, and Law. Lockwood Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.5913/2015499.

Full text
Abstract:
The publication of The Formation of the Sunni Schools of Law, Ninth-Tenth Centuries CE, first as a University of Pennsylvania doctoral dissertation in 1992, and subsequently as a monograph in 1997 (Studies in Islamic Law and Society, Brill), established Christoph Melchert as a preeminent scholar of the history of Islamic law and institutions. Through close readings of works on fiqh, meticulous unpacking of data in biographical dictionaries, and careful attention to curricular, pious, pedagogical, and scholarly practices, Melchert has subsequently illuminated the processes and procedures that undergirded the development of Islamic movements and institutions in the formative period of Islam. The present volume brings together sixteen of his articles, including those considered his most important as well as ones that are difficult to access. Originally published between 1997 and 2014, they are arranged chronologically under three rubrics-hadith, piety, and law. The material is presented in a new format, updated by Melchert where appropriate, and indexed. The appearance of these articles together in a single volume makes this book a highly significant and welcome contribution to the field of classical Islamic Studies.

Leiser, Gary. The Restoration of Sunnism. Lockwood Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.5913/2022792.

Full text
Abstract:
The Restoration of Sunnism is a study of the early history of Islamic law schools (s. madrasa, pl. madāris) and their professors in late Fāṭimid and Aiyūbid Egypt (495–647/1101–1249). It describes the origin and spread of these institutions, their teachers, and their role in the religious life of Egypt. This work is a lightly revised version of the author’s 1976 University of Pennsylvania doctoral dissertation, which remains one of the most important works on the history of the premodern institution of the madrasa to date. Unlike many publications on the madāris in recent decades, which argue that medieval Islamic legal education was informal and lacked structure, the present work endeavors to detect the elements of structure and order in the institution of the madrasa and in its educational curricula and the practices associated with it. Leiser’s ground-breaking work stands out for its attention to detail and to the political, economic, and religious background of twelfth- and thirteenth-century Egypt.
