Abstract:

Abstract:
This report is a document summarizing a master thesis by the student Michael GustafssonTapper written during the spring of 2018. The thesis is the part of the master Integrated ProductDesign in the field of Industrial Design engineering at KTH, The Royal Institute of Technologyin Stockholm, Sweden. Today workers in assembly lines get feedback from their tools, butsometimes this transmitted information is missed by the worker. This thesis resulted in adevelopment of a previous project in the course MF2016 Industrial Design Engineering AdvancedCourse, Part 2. The result was a solution with a pair of safety glasses by the name Protective SignalProvider or PSP within the product family Operator Feedback, OPF. PSP used light of LEDsand soundwaves in form of vibration from bone conductive speakers. A more extensiveinvestigation was also done to pair PSP to Atlas Copco’s assembly system controller PF6000. ThePSP used Bluetooth low energy for communication and can be connected to the tool in use andthe interface of the assembly. An evaluation compared the previous external product that couldbe placed on a pair of safety glasses with the new internal product with integrated components. The evaluation resulted in the external product being the best solution for Atlas Copco toproceed with since regulations, laws and standards make PSP too complex to produce.

Mathew, Panakkal Jesu. "On Some Aspects of the Differential Operator." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2006. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/math_theses/12.

Full text
Abstract:
The Differential Operator D is a linear operator from C1[0,1] onto C[0,1]. Its domain C1[0,1] is thoroughly studied as a meager subspace of C[0,1]. This is analogous to the status of the set of all rational numbers Q in the set of the real numbers R. On the polynomial vector space Pn the Differential Operator D is a nilpotent operator. Using the invariant subspace and reducing subspace technique an appropriate basis for the underlying vector space can be found so that the nilpotent operator admits its Jordan Canonical form. The study of D on Pn is completely carried out. Finally, the solution space V of the nth order differential equation with leading coefficient one is studied. The behavior of D on V is explored using some notions from linear algebra and linear operators. NOTE- Due to the limitation of the above being in "text only form" , further details of this abstract can be viewed in the pdf file.

Matjila, D. M. "On a class of pseudo-differential operators in IRⁿ." Thesis, Rhodes University, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1001981.

Full text
Abstract:
The class of pseudo-differential operators with symbols from Sm (superscript) po̧̧ (subscipt)(Ωx IRⁿ) has been extensively studied. The main assumption which characterises this class of symbols is that a(x,Ȩ) є Sm (superscript)po̧̧ (subscipt)(Ωx IRⁿ) should have a polynomial growth in the Ȩ variable only. The x-variable is controlled on compact subsets of Ω. A polynomial growth in both the x and Ȩ variables on a C°°(lR²ⁿ) function a(x,Ȩ) gives rise to a different class of symbols and a corresponding class of operators. In this work, such symbols and the action of the operators on the functional spaces S(lRⁿ) , S'(lRⁿ) and the Sobolev spaces Qs (superscript) (lRⁿ) (s є lRⁿ) are studied. A study of the calculus (i.e. transposes, adjoints and compositions) and the functional analysis of these operators is done with special attention to L-boundedness and compactness. The class of hypoelliptic pseudo-differential operators in IRⁿ is introduced as a subclass of those considered earlier. These operators possess the property that they allow a pseudo- inverse or parametrix. In conclusion. the spectral theory of these operators is considered. Since a general spectral theory would be beyond the scope of this work, only some special cases of the pseudo-differential operators in IRⁿ are considered. A few applications of this spectral theory are discussed

Abstract:
In Chapter 2, we first introduce a generalized inverse differentiability for set-valued mappings and consider some of its properties. Then, we use this differentiability, Ekeland's Variational Principle and some fixed point theorems to consider constrained implicit function and open mapping theorems and surjectivity problems of set-valued mappings. The mapping considered is of the form F(x, u) + G (x, u). The inverse derivative condition is only imposed on the mapping x F(x, u), and the mapping x G(x, u) is supposed to be Lipschitz. The constraint made to the variable x is a closed convex cone if x F(x, u) is only a closed mapping, and in case x F(x, u) is also Lipschitz, the constraint needs only to be a closed subset. We obtain some constrained implicit function theorems and open mapping theorems. Pseudo-Lipschitz property and surjectivity of the implicit functions are also obtained. As applications of the obtained results, we also consider both local constrained controllability of nonlinear systems and constrained global controllability of semilinear systems. The constraint made to the control is a time-dependent closed convex cone with possibly empty interior. Our results show that the controllability will be realized if some suitable associated linear systems are constrained controllable. In Chapter 3, without defining topological degree for set-valued mappings of monotone type, we consider the solvability of the operator inclusion y0 N1(x) + N2 (x) on bounded subsets in Banach spaces with N1 a demicontinuous set-valued mapping which is either of class (S+) or pseudo-monotone or quasi-monotone, and N2 is a set-valued quasi-monotone mapping. Conclusions similar to the invariance under admissible homotopy of topological degree are obtained. Some concrete existence results and applications to some boundary value problems, integral inclusions and controllability of a nonlinear system are also given. In Chapter 4, we will suppose u A (t,u) is a set-valued pseudo-monotone mapping and consider the evolution inclusions x' (t) + A(t,x((t)) f (t) a.e. and (d)/(dt) (Bx(t)) + A (t,x((t)) f(t) a.e. in an evolution triple (V,H,V*), as well as perturbation problems of those two inclusions.

Abstract:
Let (Ω, Σ, µ) be a finite measure space and X, a Banach space with continuous dual X*. A scalarly measurable function f: Ω→X is Dunford integrable if for each x* X*, x*f L1(µ). Define the operator Tf. X* → L1(µ) by T(x*) = x*f. Then f is Pettis integrable if and only if this operator is weak*-to-weak continuous. This paper begins with an overview of this function. Work by Robert Huff and Gunnar Stefansson on the operator Tf motivates much of this paper. Conditions that make Tf weak*-to-weak continuous are generalized to weak*-toweak continuous operators on dual spaces. For instance, if Tf is weakly compact and if there exists a separable subspace D X such that for each x* X*, x*f = x*fχDµ-a.e, then f is Pettis integrable. This nation is generalized to bounded operators T: X* → Y. To say that T is determined by D means that if x*| D = 0, then T (x*) = 0. Determining subspaces are used to help prove certain facts about operators on dual spaces. Attention is given to finding determining subspaces far a given T: X* → Y. The kernel of T and the adjoint T* of T are used to construct determining subspaces for T. For example, if T*(Y*) ∩ X is weak* dense in T*(Y*), then T is determined by T*(Y*) ∩ X. Also if ker(T) is weak* closed in X*, then the annihilator of ker(T) (in X) is the unique minimal determining subspace for T.

Abstract:
This thesis was developed as an assignment from Atlas Copco where the goal was to develop software that could simulate an OU (Operator Unit) in a PC environment. Atlas Copco’s proprietary radio-control system for mining vehicles consists of a transmitter, called OU, and a receiver, called MU (Machine Unit). An OU is a controller with controls in the form of buttons, joysticks and switches and with indicators in the form of LEDs and display. To ensure that an OU only can communicate with a specific MU and vice versa the units’ radio modules must be paired together through a process called “learn link”, that is performed by connecting the units with a CAN-cable.   By using an OU simulator for MU production tests it would be easier to perform some tests, such as internal errors and warnings, and it would be possible to include tests that are impossible to do with OU hardware, such as intentionally send a miscalculated checksum, to examine the MU’s response. The OU simulator should have a graphical user interface and by connecting a radio card to the PC it should be able to send and receive data from an MU. It should also be able to perform “learn link”. The final product was developed using C# together with an XP-inspired development method.

Abstract:
Spectral properties of linear operators and operator functions can be used to analyze models in nature. When dispersion and damping are taken into account, the dependence of the spectral parameter is in general non-linear and the operators are not selfadjoint. In this thesis non-selfadjoint operator functions are studied and several methods for obtaining properties of unbounded non-selfadjoint operator functions are presented. Equivalence is used to characterize operator functions since two equivalent operators share many significant characteristics such as the spectrum and closeness. Methods of linearization and other types of equivalences are presented for a class of unbounded operator matrix functions. To study properties of the spectrum for non-selfadjoint operator functions, the numerical range is a powerful tool. The thesis introduces an optimal enclosure of the numerical range of a class of unbounded operator functions. The new enclosure can be computed explicitly, and it is investigated in detail. Many properties of the numerical range such as the number of components can be deduced from the enclosure. Furthermore, it is utilized to prove the existence of an infinite number of eigenvalues accumulating to specific points in the complex plane. Among the results are proofs of accumulation of eigenvalues to the singularities of a class of unbounded rational operator functions. The enclosure of the numerical range is also used to find optimal and computable estimates of the norm of resolvent and a corresponding enclosure of the ε-pseudospectrum.

Abstract:
Since Mclntosh's introduction of the H-calculus for sectorial operators, the topic has been studied by many authors. Haase has constructed a similar functional calculus for strip-type operators, and has also developed an abstract framework which unifies both of these examples and more. In this thesis we use this abstract functional calculus setting to study two particular problems in operator theory. The first of these is concerned with operator sums. We ask the question of when the sum log A+log B is closed, where A and B are a pair of injective sectorial operators whose resolvents commute. We show that the sum is always closable and, when A and B are invertible, we determine sufficient conditions for the sum to be closed. These conditions are of Kalton-Weis type, and in fact ensure that AB is sectorial and that the identity log A + log B = log(AB) holds. We then identify an interpolation space on which these conditions are automatically satisfied. Our second problem is connected to the exponential of a strip-type operator B, specifically the question of whether eB is sectorial. When -1 ∈ p(eB), the spectrum of eB lies in a sector, and we obtain an estimate on the resolvent outside this sector. This estimate becomes closer to sectoriality as more restrictions are placed on the resolvents of B itself. This leads us to introduce the ideas of F-sectorial and F-strong strip-type operators, whose spectra are contained in a sector or strip, but which satisfy a different resolvent estimate from that of a sectorial or strong striptype operator. In some cases it is possible to define the logarithm of an F-sectorial operator or the exponential of an F-strong strip-type operator. We prove resolvent estimates for the resulting logarithms and exponentials, and explore the relationships between the various classes of operators considered.

In addition to operators who pick scheduled service duties, transit agencies have a separate group of operators to cover work that becomes open due to absence or other unexpected situations. This group of operators are referred to collectively as the extraboard. Another way to cover the open work is through operator overtime. Therefore, a central challenge of the extraboard planning problem lies in the uncertainty of the amount of the work that will need to be covered, as well as the extent of operators' willingness to work overtime. Due to the critical importance of service reliability, transit agencies seek a systematic approach to schedule extraboard operators to minimize a weighted cost of lost service, overtime, and extraboard operators. This thesis proposes a methodology that systematically addresses the extraboard scheduling problem, focusing on a case study using data from the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA).
The methodology has two components: demand (absence) estimation and schedule optimization. Absence can be classified as known-in-advance or unexpected, based on both when they are known and the way they are covered. Two negative binomial regression models were formulated based on their different characteristics. Among the variables tested, no significant predictive relationships were found with respect to absences, overtime, or lost service. The resulting models mainly reflect the average behavior on each day of the week. Multi-stage integer optimization programs were constructed to schedule the extraboard operators. Given the current extraboard size, assignments given by different modelling strategies were similar. When the staffing level constraint was relaxed, compared to deterministic models, the robust solutions achieve more stable level of lost service and overtime, while being less sensitive to model parameters.
However, the robust solutions are of higher financial costs to the MBTA, since they included more fixed financial costs from the extraboard operators and less variable costs from overtime and lost service. Therefore, without improvements in the input estimations, decision of extraboard size depends on the tradeoff between financial costs and service reliability. This thesis contributes to the literature by quantitatively studying operator absence, introducing robust optimization for the extraboard planning problem, and demonstrating the use and the advantages of a systematic assignment procedure.

Abstract:
We consider the inverse problem for the magnetic Schrödinger operator with the assumption that the magnetic potential is in Cλ and the electric potential is of the form p1 + div p2 with p1, p2 ∈ Cλ. We use semiclassical pseudodifferential operators on semiclassical Sobolev spaces and Bourgain type spaces. The Bourgain type spaces are defined using the symbol of the operator h2Δ + hμ ⋅ D. Our main result gives a procedure for recovering the curl of the magnetic field and the electric potential from the Dirichlet to Neumann map. Our results are in dimension three and higher.

Abstract:
Indoor solutions as a part of cellular mobile networks planning have been used for years in a way to fulfill the lack of admissible coverage while subscribers experienced using cellular phones indoors. On the other hand, network capital and operational expenditures; that has also commonly been used for Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) solutions in indoor deployments. Besides sharing, outsourcing network operation and maintenance has also been widely accepted by wireless carriers all around the world after that IT outsourcing flow, which started in late 90s, seemed to be quite promising for lowering operational costs. The raise of new technologies in this domain that always promise higher, better and more to subscribers, little by little started to become worrisome since operators have begun to experience lower revenues from voice services during the last couple of years as well as higher demand of capacity. As a result, operators started considering deploying indoor networks as a part of their planned network, with regard to the fact that during recent years the femtocell technology became the hot topic for smallcell deployments. This way, MNOs could exploit benefits of covering customers indoors efficiently as well as offloading mobile data traffic from macro cellular networks. But a question rose afterwards; why sharing and outsourcing in smallcell networks have not taken off yet? As they have been commonly used in macro cellular networks and DAS solutions? In this MSc thesis, cooperation between different actors of the shared indoor mobile network ecosystem is studied by investigating both possible sharing models and the concept of outsourcing network operation and management for smallcell networks. This investigation has been done based on femtocells as the most suitable technology both for better coverage and higher capacity. During this process, different roles of actors in the ecosystems, the business relations between them and the main drivers of sharing were studied as well as discussing the main beneficiary of sharing, in order to find different types of cooperation and correlation in the ecosystem. The main research questions in the thesis revolve around absence of sharing either active or passively in indoor mobile networks as well as outsourcing network operation and management. Eventually, a series of possible deployment models for shared and outsourced indoor mobile networks are presented where they have been tried to be verified by a number of use cases. As a result, this study proposes a set of recommendations for different possible operators in the ecosystem in order to formulate a profitable business model for them. These recommendations are believed to enable taking of f sharing and outsourcing in smallcell networks.

Abstract:
The important classes of normally solvable, ϴ₊ (ϴ₋) and strictly singular (strictly cosingular) operators have long been studied in the setting of bounded or closed operators between Banach spaces. Results by Kato, Lacey, et al (see Goldberg [16; III.1.9, III.2.1 and III.2.3] ) led to the definition of certain norm related functions of operators (Γ, Δ and Γ₀) which provided a powerful new way to study the classes of ϴ₊ and strictly singular operators (see for example Gramsch[19], Lebow and Schechter[28] and Schechter[36]). Results by Brace and R.-Kneece[4] among others led to the definition of analogous functions (Γ' and Δ') which were used to study ϴ₋ and strictly cosingular operators (see for example Weis, [37] and [38]). Again this problem was considered mainly for the case of bounded operators between Banach spaces. This thesis represents a contribution to knowledge in the sense that by considering the functions Γ', Δ' and Γ'₀, as well as the minimum modulus function in the more general setting of unbounded linear operators between normed linear spaces, we obtain the classes of F₋ and Range Open operators which turn out to be closely related to the classes of ϴ₋ and normally solvable operators respectively. We also define unbounded strictly cosingular operators and find that many of the classical results on ϴ₋, normally solvable and bounded strictly cosingular operators go through for F₋, range open and unbounded strictly cosingular operators respectively. This ties up with work done by R. W. Cross and provides a workable framework within which to study ϴ₋ and ϴ₊ type operators in the much more. general setting of unbounded linear operators between normed linear spaces.

Ardila, Rene. "Morita equivalence of W*-correspondences and their Hardy algebras." Diss., University of Iowa, 2017. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/5703.

Full text
Abstract:
Muhly and Solel developed a notion of Morita equivalence for C*- correspondences, which they used to show that if two C*-correspondences E and F are Morita equivalent then their tensor algebras $\mathcal{T}_{+}(E)$ and $\mathcal{T}_{+}(F)$ are (strongly) Morita equivalent operator algebras. We give the weak* version of this result by considering (weak) Morita equivalence of W*-correspondences and employing Blecher and Kashyap's notion of Morita equivalence for dual operator algebras. More precisely, we show that weak Morita equivalence of W*-correspondences E and F implies weak Morita equivalence of their Hardy algebras $H^{\infty}(E)$ and $H^{\infty}(F)$. We give special attention to W*-graph correspondences and show a number of results related to their Morita equivalence. We study how different representations of a W*-algebra give rise to Morita equivalent objects. For example, we show that if (E,A) is a W*-graph correspondence and we have two faithful normal representations $\sigma$ and $\tau$ of A, then the commutants of the induced representions $\sigma ^{\ms{F}(E)}(H^{\infty}(E))$ and $\tau ^{\ms{F}(E)}(H^{\infty}(E))$ are weakly Morita equivalent dual operator algebras. We also develop a categorical approach to Morita equivalence of W*- correspondences. This involves building categories of covariant representations and studying the groups $Aut(\mathbb{D}({(E^{\sigma}})^*)$ and $Aut(H^{\infty}(E))$ (the automorphism groups of the unit ball of intertwiners and the Hardy algebra). In this regard, we advance the work of Muhly and Solel by showing new results about these groups, their matrix representation and their algebraic properties.

Patterson, Cameron Webster. "An Economic Model of Subscriber Offloading Between Mobile Network Operators and a WLAN Operator." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/50660.

Full text
Abstract:
With increasing mobile data demand there is a push towards heterogeneous networks. Small-scale operators (SSOs) of WLANs are becoming more prevalent, while Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) seek an outlet for their customers' data usage. These conditions prompt the need for an effective relationship between the two parties for the purpose of offloading cellular data traffic to WLANs in a way that is economically beneficial to all involved. This thesis presents a model of such a relationship, in which the SSO sets a strategic offloading price per subscriber and several MNOs can choose how many subscribers they want to offload in order to minimize their costs. We determine the optimal offloading price, identify how the SSO incorporates its own network's quality of service (QoS) into its price decision, and examine the way in which the MNOs' cost structures affect their ability to offload. This model can be applied by both MNOs and SSOs to make informed network deployment decisions, even before engaging in an offloading relationship.

Abstract:
A forest harvester operator is today facing a stressful work environment with a high demand on coordination skills and effectiveness to run the operation with positive economical outcome. The learning phase is very long compared to similar work. The vision for this project was to transform the machine, through intuitive and innovative interface design, into an extension of the operator’s body. In this way it provides higher productivity as well as user friendliness, shorter learning phase and a healthier work situation. This was realized through the use of prior but yet not market available related research. Through market studies, applicable technology already available in other industries was found. The result is a complete seat with controls for a conceptual Gremo harvester realizable in the year 2023.
