Abstract:
This study evaluates the effects of an eight week, school-based, preventive intervention programme on the adjustment of children to divorce. Thirty-three later latency stage children (9 to 12 year olds) were evaluated before and after intervention on the Child Behavior Check List by parents (Achenbach & Edelbrock, 1983) and teachers (Edelbrock & Achenbach, 1984) for behaviour problems. Children's self reports on their problematic beliefs about divorce (Kurdek and Berg, 1987), self-perceived competence (Harter, 1985), and trait anxiety levels (Reynolds & Richmond, 1985) were assessed. Subsequent to the intervention children had significantly fewer misconceptions about divorce, had increased perceived social acceptance, and had decreased anxiety levels. Behavioral reports obtained from parents and teachers failed to support the apparent gains.

Wentz, Rodger Trent. "The Effects of a Structured Intervention Program on Identity and Divorce Adjustment." DigitalCommons@USU, 1986. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/5938.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to determine if a structured intervention program could assist individuals in adjusting to some of the disruption associated with divorce. A secondary purpose was to determine if identity status would mediate the effects of the intervention program upon divorce adjustment. The components of the intervention program were modeled on previous research. It was hypothesized that individuals participating in a structured treatment program would manifest greater gains in areas of divorce adjustment than the control group. However, results show that while there was greater gain for the experimental group than the control group in several areas, such gain was not a level of significance sufficient to support the primary hypothesis. In addition, support was not generated for the mediational role of identity. Indeed, identity appeared as a rather stable construct, showing very little change from treatment effects and not seeming to influence treatment outcome. It was found that those individuals high in identity status reported less adjustment problems from the divorce than those individuals with low identity statuses. However, this was not a factor of treatment with the control group reporting the same finding. Implications for future research suggest studies in divorce adjustment focus on symptomology and problems in day-to-day living, with objective measuring devices rather than the subjective self-report instruments currently in use. Research on identity status as it relates to divorce adjustment should be longitudinal in nature tracking identity prior to divorce, and allowing for longer intervention periods.

Abstract:
Magister Artium (Social Work) - MA(SW)
Marriage is one of the oldest institutions of mankind. It is the coming together of a man and woman for the purpose of procreation and society. In our society marriage is a social institution in which a male individual marries a female individual, provided both have attained their respective adulthood as specified by the law of the state. Although the definition of marriage varies with culture it can, in a nutshell, be defined as a social union or legal contract between spouses that establishes rights and obligations between the two of them, between them and their children and between them and their in-laws. It therefore falls within the ambit of those who are specifically trained in psycho-socio counselling to minimise the damaging consequences of a failed marriage.

Botha, Cornelius J. "Evaluation of a school-based intervention programme for South African children of divorce." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/11901.

Abstract:

Currently, parental separation in South Africa affects an estimated 30 000 children under the age of 18 annually. These children spend a great part of their day at school where they have to interact with peers and teachers and are expected to perform academically, but parental separation could have a significant impact on their ability to do so. Although research has found that children can be adversely affected by parental divorce, schools in South Africa do not offer any group interventions in an attempt to assist and guide children through what could be an ordeal for them. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the school-based Children of Divorce Intervention Programme (CODIP) at two South African schools. CODIP is a preventively oriented 12-week group programme for nine to twelve year old children. The aims of the programme are to create a supportive group atmosphere in which children can share divorce-related feelings and clarify misconceptions about divorce. Participants are also taught problem-solving, communication and anger management skills. Twenty-five boys of divorce from two schools (ages 10 to 13 years) were randomly assigned to two experimental groups and one delayed intervention control group. The boys' understanding of divorce was assessed through the completion of the Children's Belief about Parental Separation (CBAPS) scale. The Self Perception Profile for Children (SPPC) was used to assess children's perceptions of themselves, while the Parent-Child Interaction Questionnaire for Children (PACHIQ-R-CH) was employed to determine the boys' perceptions of their families. Questionnaires to determine the boys' general adjustment were completed by the boys, teachers and parents. Boys completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), teachers the Teacher-Child Rating Scale (T-CRS), the AML-R Behaviour Rating Scale and the SDQ, and parents completed the Parent-Child Rating Scale (P-CRS) and the SDQ.

Abstract:
This study investigated efficacy of an online, preventive intervention program, Children of Divorce-Coping with Divorce (CoD-CoD; Boring, 2011). It extends previous findings to a sample of eight youth from high-conflict families who recently initiated legal divorce proceedings. CoD-CoD is a cognitive-behavioral intervention that targets coping efficacy, coping strategies, and divorce-related cognitive appraisals. A multiple-baseline single case experimental design evaluated change in daily use of active and avoidant coping strategies and corresponding coping efficacy ratings. Individual patterns of change were inspected for the program’s putative mediator variables and overall mental health functioning. Results indicate that daily coping efficacy ratings increased for four participants and decreased for the three participants who reported the highest levels of exposure to interparental conflict. The majority of participants increased use of at least one type of active coping strategy and half decreased use of at least one type of avoidant coping strategy. There were no observed patterns of systematic change in divorce-related cognitive appraisals and changes in mental health functioning were mixed. An exploratory analysis found that youth were classified as "high-risk" on a psychometrically-sound risk index in 100% of cases with documentation of two or more conflict-indicative legal events in the family court file. The study findings are consistent with previous evidence of a moderated program effect on coping efficacy, although positive effects on youth-reported mental health functioning were not replicated. Findings are discussed within the context of a high-conflict sample with temporal proximity to the legal divorce and in light of study limitations. Research directions toward effectively connecting at-risk youth with evidence-based prevention services are detailed.

Abstract:
This formative evaluation focuses on feedback regarding a self-guided educational intervention for those at the crossroads of divorce. Entitled Should I Keep Trying to Work It Out? A Guidebook for Individuals and Couples at the Crossroads of Divorce (And Before), this Guidebook aims to help individuals minimize possible ambiguity in the decision-making process surrounding divorce. Fifty-three participants were recruited through divorce orientation education classes to provide formative feedback via brief phone surveys. Eighteen of these provided in-depth interviews for additional feedback. Though the participants in this study were largely past the crossroads of divorce, most agreed or strongly agreed that the Guidebook was helpful (61%), trustworthy (88%), helped them change some of their attitudes about divorce (67%), and helped them be more prepared for the divorce (81%). Additionally, 64% reported feeling more confident about their decision to divorce, including three noteworthy cases that cited domestic violence as their reason for divorce. Overall, this Guidebook appears to be useful to those who are contemplating divorce. Options for improving the Guidebook and introducing it earlier in the decision-making process are discussed.

Abstract:
The project comprised two Phases. Phase 1 - the Impact study, investigated the adverse effects of divorce on twenty-eight mothers and on their eldest or only adolescent or pre-adolescent child, by means of a semi-structured interviews. Major divorce effects for the mothers included downward economic mobility; anxiety; a sense of bereavement; generalized insecurity; guilt; depression; resentment; anger; heightened stress; diminished self-esteem and lack of confidence. Short- and long-term divorce-effects comparisons suggested that mothers adapted to their circumstances, with time. The children experienced varying degrees of deprivation; painful disruption in their lives, anger; frustration; depression; low self-esteem; and grief and sadness at separation from their fathers. Phase 2- the Intervention study, examined the effects of maternal counselling and lifeskills training on an experimental group of eighteen divorced mothers and their eldest or only adolescent or pre-adolescent child. Mothers and children completed pre- and post-intervention measures, i.e. batteries of psychometric tests. Test results were compared with those of a like waiting list control group (of ten), assessed before and after a time interval equal to the training period of the experimental group. The counselling/lifeskills training programme included twelve sessions conducted at weekly intervals, which embraced divorce-related issues, single-parenting, child-management, lifeskills teaching, discussion periods and homework assignments. Post-intervention measures revealed statistically (and clinically) significant changes for experimental group mothers, but not for untreated controls. These included significant decreases in depression, parenting stress and overindulgence to children and a significant increase in self-esteem. Post-intervention measures for the untreated experimental group children revealed two statistically significant results, namely, increases (from baseline to the end of their mothers intervention) in General self-esteem, and decreases in egocentric, overindulged behaviours. Training effects were maintained or improved at a six-month follow-up.

The main objective of this research was to reflect upon the communication standards of former spouses in divorce and in litigation. The theoretical framework was that of social constructionism. The focus of the methodological approach was centered on the analysis of discoursive practices. Due to this, the specific objectives presuppose the understanding of the implications of direct communication between former spouses in dispute and the comprehension of the social representations that they express by means of dialogue in relation to divorce proceedings and child custody. So that, the communication affects and is affected by the litigation. The field of this empirical research was the project Families’ Educative Justice developed by the Psychological Clinics of PUC-GO. The individuals who took part of the subproject were chosen by means of randomical way: former spouses whose age varied from 30 to 50 years old, with sons and daughters from five to 20 years old. Besides this researcher, a group of educators was composed by professors, psychologists and post-graduated students. During six meetings, the data which were collected by this researcher revealed the social phenomenum of communication between former couples when it was occurring. With the participants’ agreement, these sessions were recorded by audio broadcasting and fully transcribed in order to register the data of this research. The conclusions were that the divorce, within the marital context, is influenced by various marital ways of living, as well as the past experiences of the former couple before the divorce and the infinity of economic, social and cultural circumstances.

Abstract:
Many family mediators encounter intimate partner violence (IPV) during the course of child-custody and divorce mediation. By interviewing family mediators in Oregon I have established concrete strategies that mediators use when working with parties who may have a history of IPV. These strategies may be structural, such as building design and intake procedures, or they may be verbal interventions employed during the course of mediation. Mediators employed a wide variety of strategies based on their experience, situations, and intuition. Some strategies, like the use of shuttle mediation, were used by all the mediators I contacted. Other strategies, such as naming problematic behavior, were limited to only a few of the mediators. All the participating family mediators were aware of the possibility of IPV and consciously took measures to limit its influence on the mediation process when it existed.

Meono, Lori. "Using music-based interventions with adolescents coping with family conflict or parental divorce| A resource manual." Thesis, Pepperdine University, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3716161.

Abstract:

Listening to music is an activity that provides a range of physical and psychological benefits (e.g., tension relief, decreased depression) for people across cultures and age groups. Adolescents, specifically, are among the most active consumers of music, and music appears to be a natural coping strategy for this age group. Research suggests that both music and the family context play important roles during the developmental phase of adolescence. Family transitions such as divorce have become increasingly common experiences for adolescents and may have long-lasting negative effects on an adolescent’s emotional well-being. However, research regarding music-based interventions for use with adolescents experiencing family conflicts or transitions is limited. Thus, this project involved the creation of a resource manual designed to help mental health professionals implement music-based interventions in their work with adolescents coping with family conflict or parental divorce. The development of the manual was informed by a review of the literature about music therapy, adolescents, and families, as well as by questionnaires completed by three certified music therapists, and this author’s own clinical experiences. The data was then integrated and synthesized into a comprehensive resource manual, which was evaluated by three clinicians who are not trained music therapists for its efficacy, relevance, and user-friendliness. Feedback for the manual was collected via an evaluation form. Results indicated that the manual may be a useful supplemental tool for mental health professionals. Strengths, weaknesses, and suggestions for improvement are also discussed.

Abstract:
The present research project deals with group interventions for children having separated parents. Its aim is a methodological reflection about the programs analyzed and studied in the literature in order to later deepen some aspects of the Italian intervention Gruppi di Parola. The organization in three qualitative studies has allowed the researcher to approach the research object according to different perspectives and methodologies. The first study corresponds to a Systematic Narrative Review, carried out in order to systematize the international literature about the group interventions for children having separated parents which have been analyzed through a rigorous research design. The other studies respectively deepen two aspects of the intervention Gruppi di Parola: the theoretical and practical underpinnings through a focused ethnographic perspective (second study) and the interactive dynamics activated during a specific ritual phase of the process (welcoming) by means of a complex observational methodology (third study).

Abstract:
Divorce has become so prevalent in our present day society, that it is regarded as one of the most sressful and complex mental health crises facing children today. As parents are often under tremendous stress during the time of divorce, they may be incapable of provding the support and guidance children need. The purpose of this study is to present a group counselling intervention programme to assist children of divorce and to create a supportive group atmosphere in which children can share divorce-related feelings, clarify common misconceptions and reduce feelings of isolation. Findings of this study indicate that the acquisition of problem-solving communication and anger control skills help to reduce feelings of depression and anxiety, improve the self-concept and ultimately promote post-divorce adjustment.

"Children of Divorce Coping with Divorce (CoD-CoD): Evaluating the Efficacy of an Internet-Based Preventative Intervention for Children of Divorce." Doctoral diss., 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.14308.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: An ever expanding body of research has shown that children of divorce are at increased risk for a range of maladaptive outcomes including academic failure, behavior problems, poor psychological adjustment, reduced self-concept, and reduced social competence (Amato, 2001). Furthermore, the widespread prevalence of divorce makes preventing these poor outcomes a pressing public health concern. The Children of Divorce-Coping with Divorce (CoD-CoD) program is an internet-based selective prevention that was derived from recent research identifying modifiable protective factors in children of divorce including active and avoidant coping, divorce appraisals, and coping efficacy. CoD-CoD addresses these putative mediators through careful adaptation of intervention components previously demonstrated to be effective for children from disrupted families (Pedro-Carroll & Alpert-Gillis, 1997; Stolberg & Mahler, 1994; Sandler, et al., 2003). In the CoD-CoD efficacy trial, 147 children ages 11-16 whose family had received a divorce decree within 48 months of the intervention start date served as participants. Participants were assessed in two waves in order to test the small theory of the intervention as well as the interventions effects on internalizing and externalizing behaviors. Analyses indicated that the program effectively reduced the participants total mental health problems and emotional problems as reported on the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) (d = .37) and for total mental health problems this effect was stronger for children with greater baseline mental health problems (d = .46). The program also had mediated effects on both child and parent-reported total mental health problems whereby the program improved coping efficacy for children with low baseline coping efficacy which led to reduced parent-reported mental health problems. To the author's knowledge this is the first randomized controlled trail of internet-based mental health program for children or adolescents which utilizes an active control condition.

Abstract:

South African society has been plagued by traumatic events that have influenced many people including children. Within a systemic context children are impacted upon by various micro-systems within which they find themselves, for example, the family, the school and church amongst others, as well as the macro-system of society as a whole. Divorce is such a personal yet extremely traumatic experience especially when there are children involved. Research shows that the effects of divorce are often felt for many years later. This research study was approached from a qualitative perspective examining the impact of divorce on children in different developmental stages. It highlights ways in which children could be assisted during the crisis of divorce and explores protective factors that would facilitate post-divorce adjustment. The study included short-term therapeutic intervention with six children attending two schools in the Western Cape. By it’s very essence this study allows one to offer guidance to schools and parents with regard to emotional support for learners who have been through similar experiences.

Abstract:
This study evaluated the effectiveness of a group intervention program offered by a community organization to people adjusting to separation and divorce. Adjustment outcomes were examined longitudinally using a pre-, post- and six-months post-intervention follow-up. The research sample comprised permanent and temporary residents of the Cairns region. Due to a high transient population, a high attrition rate was experienced post- and six-months post-intervention. Two studies were conducted. For study one, 29 participants were randomly assigned to the intervention or delayed intervention groups. Both groups participated in a six-week intervention program. The aim of this study was to investigate gender and group differences in adjustment to separation and divorce following group intervention. For study two, 15 participants were randomly assigned to the six-week intervention group, the two-day intervention group and the wait-list control group. The aim of this study was to use a clinically oriented applied investigation of psychological intervention to assess adjustment outcomes. The adjustment measures used to explore gender and group differences for both studies were Rosenberg's Self-Esteem scale, Social Support Appraisal scale, Levenson's Locus of Control scale and Fisher's Divorce Adjustment scale. Relationship status, relationship number and decider of separation and divorce helped to determine additional group differences. The social context variables: emotional, psychological, social, financial adjustment, property division and satisfaction provided an opportunity to address other aspects of adjustment. Most participants indicated some adjustment differences following intervention with reduced adjustment gains six-months post-intervention. The results indicate some benefits of group intervention. Furthermore, implications for future group intervention programs, gender and group specific information for the enhancement of future programs are discussed.

Abstract:
D.Litt. et Phil.
The general aim of the study was to develop and evaluate a group intervention programme for adolescents of divorce. The holistic perspective that formed the basis for the group intervention ensured attention to all relevant interacting modalities. The study included a separate, but parallel group programme for custodial parents, aimed at providing relevant information and teaching coping skills. The effect of the programme on emotional adjustment, depression, locus of control and children's beliefs about parental divorce was investigated empirically. Themes that dominated discussions during the adolescent group sessions were identified by qualitative measures. The overall value of the programme as experienced by participants was assessed. The results revealed that the group of adolescents who received intervention without parental involvement in the parent programme, improved significantly from pre to post intervention on the variables locus of control and emotional adjustment. A notable decrease in symptoms of depression was observed. The subjects whose parents participated in the parental intervention benefited less by.the program~e and did not improve significantly on any of the measures. Major themes that emerged from the qualitative study were all associated with post divorce life. Themes identified include: losing out on childhood and family life; continuous parental conflict; feelings of responsibility about the welfare of parents; ambivalent feelings towards the father; difficulties in accepting new partners of their parents and uncertainty regarding future relationships. It is the conclusion of the researcher that an holistic group intervention programme as conducted in this study can contribute towards positive change in adolescents after parental divorce. It is recommended that adolescents should attend group intervention without parental involvement.

Abstract:
The effectiveness of the Caught in the Middle (CIM) program was evaluated in a sample of 7 parent-child dyads who had recently experienced marital separation. Changes in children’s feelings before and after program participation concerning the normative frequency of divorce, coping skills, stress, self-blame, and triangulation were assessed. Feeling supported, enjoying participation and practicing skills were assessed postintervention. Changes in parents’ feelings before and after the program concerning their satisfaction with CIM, their and their children’s stress levels, were assessed. Feeling supported, being informed about the effects of divorce, and application of skills taught for their own and their children’s benefit were reported at group culmination. Results demonstrate a significant decrease from pre- to post-test in parents’ perceptions of children’s stress levels. Although other research hypotheses were not supported, it is argued that initial evidence for the effectiveness of the CIM program was demonstrated. Clinical significance and implications are discussed.

"Intervention Effects on Coping and Coping Efficacy: A Fifteen-Year Follow-Up of the New Beginnings Program." Master's thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.54860.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: This study examined whether the New Beginnings Program (NBP), a preventive parenting intervention, led to changes in coping strategies and coping efficacy in emerging adults whose families had participated in the program 15 years earlier. Gender and baseline risk were examined as moderators of these relations. Participants (M = 25.6 years; 50% female) were from 240 families that had participated in an experimental trial (NBP [mother-only, mother-child] vs. literature control). Data from the pretest and 15-year follow-up were used. Multiple regression analyses revealed that pretest risk interacted with program participation in the mother-only condition of the NBP such that offspring entering the program with higher pretest risk reported significantly less avoidant coping 15 years later. There was a marginal effect of participation in the NBP on problem-focused coping; emerging adults who had participated in the NBP had marginally higher levels of problem-focused coping. There were no significant main effects nor interactive program by risk or program by gender effects on support coping or coping efficacy. Results are discussed in terms of their implications for implementation of preventive interventions and research on pathways of coping.

Venter, Catharina. "Short-term structured play therapy with the latency-aged child of divorce." Thesis, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/2392.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to develop and test the efficacy of a short-term structured play therapy treatment program for latency-aged children of divorce between six and twelve years of age. Following parental divorce latency-aged children often manifest disturbed emotional and behavioural functioning in several areas of their lives including issues such as self-image problems and poor academic functioning. In many instances, problems are acute and necessitate effective help in a relatively short time. Several play therapy modalities exist for children with some focusing on problems stemming from divorce. However, due to their complex, unstructured and lengthy nature, most of the treatment programs reviewed were relatively ineffective for most social workers. Increasingly families have little time and/or limited financial resources to commit to long-term therapy. A literature review showed a clear need for a shorter, less complex treatment program to solve the problem of limited finances and time constraints of parents seeking help for their children. A seven-stage, short-term structured play therapy program was developed for this study, including a pre-and post-treatment assessment, which focused on the main areas of dysfunction prominent among latency-aged children of divorce. The program was implemented by treating a female latency-aged child from a divorced family. The findings showed that the short-term structured play therapy program developed for this study appears to be effective in dealing with necessary and important psychological tasks facing children of divorce. The treatment program worked effectively with a female latency-aged child and facilitated psychological and emotional movement in a relatively short period of time. For social workers specialising in child play therapy the treatment program will be easy to use since all activities are clearly structured and explained with materials utilised in the sessions easy to obtain. As such, it could be a necessary and effective addition to the social work profession.

Barbosa, Ana Teresa Santos. "O ponto de encontro familiar em Portugal findos dois anos de intervenção : perceções dos técnicos sobre as características e eficácia da sua intervenção no conflito interparental decorrente da separação conjugal." Master's thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.14/24075.

Full text
Abstract:
Interparental conflicts arising from marital separation are a cause of maladjustment in the family life, both for the adults involved and for their children, with serious consequences that persist in time, in many cases. Timely and appropriate intervention can avoid its prolongation and generate conditions for cooperative co-parenting with both parents involved, interacting with each other to promote the well-being and development, without conflict, thus increasing the perception of safety and adjustment. In Portugal, this intervention is ensured by the Family Meeting Points that have been in operation for about two years. This qualitative and exploratory study intends to analyze the professionals’ perception about the characteristics, effectiveness of their practice and reflections on the same in order to improve an intervention that is fundamental since it is the only one mandated judicially in Portugal. Seventeen technicians, from Family Meeting Points, from diverse backgrounds, aged between 26 and 50, participated in the study through participation in two focus groups and nine individual interviews. The data were analyzed through the procedures of the Thematic Analysis, using Nvivo software. The results show that, although much has been done in these two years and that professionals are aware of the importance of their role, there is much that can be improved to make the intervention more effective. Implications for practice, as well as for future research, are presented, based on the reflection on the limitations of the study.

Abstract:
High-conflict divorce is a major social, economic, and public health problem. It is also one of the most significant predictors of maladjustment among parents, children and families. The legal and mental health systems are burdened with the needs and demands placed by high-conflict families. The traditional intervention models and mechanisms seems to be ineffective, insufficient and even counterproductive in this context The adversarial environment, not restorative or therapeutic, dominates the paradigm of current legal and psychosocial interventions, not helping its resolution even adding to the problem. This practice-oriented research aims to respond to the multisystemic dysfunctions of these families, reducing the associated human, social and economic costs. This thesis is structured in five chapters: two conceptual and three empirical studies. Chapter 1 summarizes the available empirical evidence on the phenomenon of child's visitation resistance and refusal, recommending ecological-systemic practices of conceptualization, evaluation and intervention in these cases of high-conflict. Chapter 2 is about the manualization of a novel intervention – For2Parents Program - in its three modalities and formats: Individual Motivational Interviewing Counselling; Psychoeducational and Psychotherapeutic Groups; Dyadic Parental Coordination. Chapter 3 integrate the Portuguese validation of the Acrimony Scale with a community sample of 196 divorced parents, with and without conflict, which resulted in a trifactorial model with good psychometric properties. Chapter 4 include the clinical-forensic feasibility trial developed with a sample of four divorced parental dyads and using within-subject and longitudinal designs. There were positive outcomes concerning retention, adherence and satisfaction rates, as well as statistically and clinically promising results in reducing coparenting conflict and improving the psychological adjustment of parents and children. Chapter 5 presents a qualitative study on the acceptability and appropriateness of For2Parents Program from parents' perspectives. This thesis aims to expand the scientific knowledge regarding high-conflict divorce, inform best practices at empirical and clinical-forensic levels, and more adjusted social and legal policies.

Orapeleng, Galenakgosi. "Chastity among adult Seventh-Day Adventists in Botswana: a psycho-spiritual study." Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/620.

Abstract:
Extra-marital affairs seem to be rampant among Seventh-day Adventist adult membership in Botswana. To determine the extent of the problem, to investigate the causative factors and to suggest ways in which individuals and families can be helped, has been the motivation for this study. It was discovered that 11.8% of married adults in the survey had at least one secret sexual partner, and 42.6% of singles had an illegal sexual partner(s). Seventh-day Adventist adults' sexuality in Botswana is characterized by hetero-sexual, multiple partners. Some of the contributing factors are economic, cultural and spiritual. Despite the prevailing influences, the majority of the adults (68%) still disagree with lax sexual behavior. This gives hope to work for their restoration and empowerment. Two key areas that were seen to be critical in empowering them were the family and spirituality. A psycho-spiritual program called, Harmonious Development, is being suggested for a systematic, educational, holistic and lifelong empowerment. This model is based on the psycho-educational theory developed by W.J. Schoeman for adult training.

Abstract:
Statistics for sexually abused children are high. When children do not receive therapy, they may develop marital problems later in life. Survivors of sexual abused have difficulty letting other people come close to them. Because emotional and sexual intimacy is important components of a marital relationship, survivors of sexual abused experience conflict within their marriages. Intimacy in the marital relationship reminds them of the abuse situation and they would try to escape from it. If couples do not go through therapeutic intervention, they would have difficulty understanding the changes in their relationship after the marriage. Within a therapeutic environment partners are able to recognise the effects of abuse and are able to learn how to handle it in order to achieve a successful marriage. The changes in intimacy levels after marriage will be investigated in this study. The study will make recommendations towards professional principles for social workers in practice.
