Full textThe objectif of this thesis is to give some elements for the understanding of the process which have provoked the birth of a strong regional concience in el bajio (this region is located in the middle-ouest of mexico and is considered-s the best representative of national life) and how this territorial concience has been modified in our epoch. The work has been divided into four chapters: the first one shows that the prespanish era has been a stage of important incubation for the future regional integration of el bajio; the second one, the colonial era, shows the different phases of his colonisation-exploitation, and it shows how the economical process brought by the spanish has provoked a special process of economical integration and a phenomenon of territorial cohesion. The third chapter is an attempt to show how the integration process of el bajio was interrupted with the independence mouvement, the civil wars and the territorial politics of unification that was created and defended to consolidate the national territory, in order to deny the differences between regions. Finally, the fourth chapter shows what is el bajio today with the mental images of the persons that live there. According to the regional perception of the abajenos, can el bajio be considered as an exemple of what the french geographe fremont names "region eclatee"? It is sure that the present image of el bajio has nothing to do with reality, but with imagination or evocation of the past. Consequently, we shall say that el bajio is a functional area
Ben, Rebah Maher. "Cartographie dynamique et investigation territoriale : le cas de l'évolution du découpage administratif tunisien." Paris 7, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008PA070115.
Full textHaving "geoplitics" and "geomatics" as double sources of inspiration , the present thesis offers a reflexion on the contribution of the tools of geomatics' to the analysis of the evolution of Tunisian administrative boundaries. It divides into three main parts. The first part, entitled "territory changes and politics of geographical data", exposes the stakes of territorial organisation which, as is the case with other countries, is a matter of an "unconscious rationality of compromises" among different actors. The second part is devoted to the "conception of a temporal geogaphical information system for the study of the evolution of the Tunisian administrative boundaries". The approach adopted consists in a systematic formalisation of administrative boundaries by analysing the administrative unit in its different contexts (horizontal and vertical). Formalisation assigns an important place to the notion of change which allows for the temporal reconstitution of boundaries. The third part is empirical in nature and proposes a "dynamic cartography approach applied to demographical data". It doesn't restrain itself to the logic of cartographic mono-representation and supplies differentiated ad adapted answers to the various questions which the planners and decision-makers might pose

Full textAt the beginning of the 2000's, suburban growth around Chinese big cities is accelerating. This spectacular growth greatly impacts urban fabrics. Shanghai becomes an emerging metropolis able to modernize its urban landscape, to mobilize the whole municipality territories, to operate a deconcentration then a polycentric redeployment of both activities and population towards new towns. This doctoral thesis in Geography deals with international urban pattern transmission, urban production in a context of huge public intervention, social and spatial changes in Shanghai new urban peripheries, challenging metropolitan system integration of the new towns built since 1999 in the framework of five polycentric redeployment programs

Full textThe combination of Cellular automata (CA) and distributed systems provide a simple way to model environmental and social issues by dividing the relevant areas into discrete spatial segments for parallel computation. The state evolution of each segment is divided into discrete time steps. Geographic divisions as irregular cell space give a chance to take advantage of Open Data in feeding the simulation systems. Data are analyzed to deduce the transition rules bringing distributed influences in a neighborhood. A case study of epidemic propagation modeling based on geographic divisions is presented. Given an assumption that the epidemic is spreading to people living in the neighborhood, a simulation system is generated based on adjacent neighbors with initial conditions collected from the government open data portal. A hybrid approach is introduced with the cooperation between regular tiles and irregular cellspaces in modeling shore activities. Environmental simulation is needed to represent ground and sea characteristics modeling spreading occurring on both spaces. These characteristics are very different due to soil capability and reaction, and sea behavior, in particular currents and tides. The problem of green tides is modeled when nutrients arepresented in high concentrations and entrapped by tidal currents

Full textThe political configuration of Quebec metropolitan area, provincial capital (600. 000 inhabitants), merging municipalities, the Quebec urban community and surrounding associated municipalities provide the basis for the identification of problems linked to the overall organisation resulting in the juxtaposition of several schemes within one metropolitan area. The formulation of such a scheme, at first opposed by local councils, was finally imposed by the provincial government. When, after ten years of delaying tactics, the municipalities constituting the Quebec urban community agreed on a scheme it was already too late to ensure the future of the community. More and more, urban development has expanded beyond the scope of this obsolete structure incessantly contested by local councils to the advantage of outskirt suburbs and to the prejudice of both the urban centre of the main city and of the region as a whole. The latter, becoming progressively severed from the capital, loses faith in the repeated promises of economic benefits supposed to be granted by a policy of development focussed on the regional capital. Surveying the performance of the Quebec metropolitan area leads to the conclusion that political power is needed at metropolitan and regional levels in order to fill the present void and lack of any development policy as can be discovered by geographical analysis through a direct active approach and involvement over a long period. The present experiment in urban and regional geopolitics may open new vistas to the discipline in as much as it brings political analysis within the scope of urban study
Bouloc, Caroline. "Les élites dans les villes polonaises : étude de géographie sociale." Thesis, Paris 1, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013PA010721/document.
Full textAfter 1989, the transition from a socialist to a capitalist economic system created major structural changes in Polish urban areas. Élites, great winners in this process, are redefining social and spatial distances between themselves and other social groups. This thesis combines quantitative approaches in the analysis of the three largest cities of Poland (Warsaw, Cracow and Lodz) with qualitative analysis (interviews with representatives of Warsaw’s élites) in order to identify the new spatial dynamics of Polish élites. Firstly, this study presents the social and urban changes due to the political and economic transition of Poland, and explains how the élites are able to redefine themselves in this new environment. A comparison of the concentrations of the upper classes in the three cities (from the mid-nineteenth century to 2002) helps to prove the persistence of social mechanisms of distinction in space at different times. Despite the homogenization of social space during socialism, pre-war good neighbourhoods never really disappeared. Against all expectations, social space in 2002 presents lower concentrations of the upper classes than before 1989, due to social dispersion. Finally, the analysis of élites’ residential preferences and behaviours, together with the analysis of élites’ representations and social practices in Warsaw, helps to highlight different spatial practices according to the type of élite. Changes in social practices within the city occurred against a background of stable mental representations

Full textThe main objective of this thesis is to analyze and interpret the processes of social division in the Athenian Metropolitan Region (A. M. R. ): which are the factors and conditions for the emergence and development of the processes of social divisions, in the Athenian area? Moreover, how the school System contributes to the reproduction and maintenance of social inequality? First, we focus on the "heirloom" of urban planning, the migration processes and their role in the development of segregating mechanisms. This first part is based on an extensive literature research review and analysis of the A. M. R. Urban dynamics, from 1832 to 2010, both from a social and political point of view. In a second part, this thesis analyzes the mechanism of urban segregation in Athens by observing the socio-economic changes, the residential strategies and the social inequalities. Economic development and contemporary business networks are taken into account and new poles and spatial development patterns are identified. The analysis of social division in the Athenian urban space according to occupational categories and housing strategies, highlights the role of economic sectors, household types and ethnic segregation in the distribution of population within the A. M. R. Finally, this thesis copes with school segregation, leaning on the educational status, the type of education and occupational status of parents, to assess whether the school System helps to reproduce and maintain social inequality. Ultimately, this thesis highpoints the relationship between academic achievement and social context, giving the opportunity to identify and differentiate the Athenian neighborhoods according to their socio-professional, educational and schooling characteristics

Full textMany rural Haitian women migrate to Port-au-Prince and become domestic workers. Their domestic service allows other women to invest in the non-domestic work and access to international migration as well. In France, these Haitian migrants become domestic workers in turn, which allows French women to invest in the non-domestic work. These phenomena demonstrate the existence of a global work and migration chain where gender, class, race and the North/South confrontations are articulated, in the neoliberal globalization. Some of these women tell their life story which expresses both the violence of social problems and their strategies to become subject. To think these "subjects" I propose to cross feminist research and clinical sociology on the theoretical, methodological and epistemological point of view

Full textCreated in 1945, Kaliningrad is an ethnically Russian autonomous entity of Russia but locked from its mainland since 1991 between Poland, Lithuania and the Baltic. A very strategic territory since its birth, it has become again a hot spot in the context of East-West new rivalry since 2014 & remains the symbol of the Victory over the Reich, though also claiming Prussian, Polish & Baltic legacy. Is it then an exception within Russia as might show its situation, youth & non-Russian old history, or isn’t it the archetype of an ultra-peripheral ethnically Russian Russia? The author considers the self-perception of the federal territory in Russian culture, & the territorial & maritime local perception of Kaliningrad inherited from its seamen; then the federal policy of uniformizing identity-building, & the regionalist identification; finally the perception by Moscow & NATO of Kaliningrad as a political-military front-line, & the very ambiguous interrelations between the Oblast’ & its neighbours, he shows that Kaliningrad's case is an extreme one but does belong to a peculiar type of Russian region to be compared to Russia's furthermost peripheries

Full textFollowing the national central cities policy launched in 2006, Wuhan Municipality, one of the biggest cities of Chinese interior provinces, has engaged into a metropolisation process. This dynamic differs from the metropolisation process of the costal Chinese cities : postponed for about 15 years, it selects some areas within itsmunicipal territory to enter an accelerated phase of development. The studies of residential neighbourhoods give some insights on the effects of this pace of development. Even though urban local areas are inequally integrated to the transport networks and to the urban modernity, local residential life benefits from enhanced urban services, facilities, employment opportunities and from the variety of available urban practices and urban environments. Still, this development fails to overcome accessibility gap between different urban residents especially between resident from and outside of Wuhan municipality. The overwhelming production of a standardized lifestyle and the steep increase of the cost of urban life challenge long-term prospect of a development that may benefit every resident

Full textThis doctorate thesis in Human geography deals with the international trade and migration of African football players towards and within Europe through a relational theoretical framework. Through the case study of African footballers, the goal is to gain a better understanding of several ongoing mechanisms occurring in the context of the global economy, such as the new international division of labour, the emergence of global production networks and the segmentation of labour markets. The thesis pleads for taking into account the social embeddedness of the economic action and of social networks as fundamental analytical unity to understand the process of globalization
