The benefits of Cloud are quite well known and many companies are trying to harness its potential. They are doing so to increase productivity, deploy newer applications fast, reduce upfront costs and optimize resource utilization. However, some companies are still trying to realize its full potential while dealing with technical challenges such as legacy systems, complexities of integration and other operational implications. The goal of this thesis is to identify the top benefits that companies are gaining through Cloud adoption and the main challenges they are facing in light of this transition. Much has already been written and discussed about these issues in literature. This thesis attempts to seek answers by directly reaching out to top executives of companies to gain real insights and understand the management strategies and best practices that are enabling this transition. By comparing reviewed literature and information gathered through interview analyses, this thesis brings clarity to areas of overlap and the major issues in Cloud computing that were not emphasized or as clearly evident in the literature. Based on the findings, key recommendations are made to help companies effectively transition into the Cloud.

Digital marketing has grown rapidly over the last two decades into a multi-billion dollar industry with thousands of companies operating in the space. Its' digital advertisement model has provided crucial economic backbone to support the proliferation of free digital content around the world. However, the industry is now facing significant challenges and controversy around Ad Blocking. The rapidly rising adoption of Ad Blocking is threatening the fundamentals in the digital advertisement model, and could have a profound impact on digital marketing and Internet content consumption. In this thesis, we research online resources to describe the latest technology and business landscape for the digital marketing industry, including the main digital marketing platforms, and system decomposition for its key subsystem Ad Tech industry. We then introduce the Ad Blocking controversy. We use stakeholder value network analysis to analyze how various market responses to Ad Blocking satisfy the system stakeholder values, hoping to shed lights on possible directions for solving the challenge systematically.

This thesis utilizes a systems approach to develop a framework to analyze the value creation and value capture potential of technical innovations in the wind energy sector of the electric power industry. Six technical innovations are considered for the analysis, including Grid-Scale Storage, On-Site Manufacturing Systems, Transmission Power Flow Control, Near-Term Forecasting, Long-Term Forecasting and Predictive Maintenance. Several comparative techniques are employed, including Pugh selection, weighted stakeholder occurrence based on stakeholder value networks, and a multi-attribute utility method. The technologies are compared across multiple possible future scenarios and scored based on their value contribution to stakeholders of both the wind power plant as well as the entire electric power system. Of the technical innovations analyzed in this framework, Grid-Scale Storage, On-Site Manufacturing Systems and Predictive Maintenance promise to contribute the greatest value to industry stakeholders and thus are the most likely to improve the competitiveness of the wind industry. A combined application of the multi-attribute utility method with the weighted stakeholder occurrence method based on stakeholder value networks was the most effective in distinguishing value contribution from the technologies. A value creation -- value capture matrix provides a useful method for visualizing value contribution to industry stakeholders and is used to inform commercialization strategy of the selected technologies. In addition, trade plots are utilized for selecting which technologies contribute the highest value across multiple possible future scenarios.

Full textIncludes bibliographical references (leaves 60-62).
Oil and transportation have been commingled since the first oil reserves were discovered. The importance of energy, namely oil, and the transportation of that energy from the producers to the consumers is persistently monitored and evaluated. Oil producers often seek novel transportation channels to increase oil production, thereby increasing revenues. Oil consumers seek unique transportation nodes to reduce their reliance on a single set of producers while potentially reducing prices. An example of the transportation interplay between global producers and consumers is highlighted by the Murmansk Oil Terminal and Pipeline proposal that seeks to provide Russian oil to the United States in a safe, efficient, and economic manner. The framework and corresponding feasibility analysis highlight the importance of oil transportation in a global landscape and peruse the macro and micro variables that intertwine and impact that landscape. A thorough evaluation of both Russian and US oil reliance must be understood, while extrapolating the influence of ancillary players such as OPEC, West Siberian Oil Reserves, the Murmansk locality, and the marine transportation industry. This thesis seeks to provide a overview of the oil industry generally, while specifically focusing on marine oil transportation. The thesis does so with a case evaluation of the Murmansk Oil Terminal and Pipeline project.

Research methodologies include literature review, case study analysis, project site analysis, and personal interviews. Findings suggest that despite a longstanding and growing call for a more harmonious relationship between nature and anthropogenic changes on the land, the green movement remains a loosely defined alternative undercurrent. The field of landscape architecture is uniquely poised to be a leader in the sustainable revolution; this is especially true when its practitioners, researchers and theorists are dedicated to ideals and activities that bring about true ecological value. For the individual designer, the experience of developing and committing to a personal design ethic can be empowering, and can produce work that has more mettle, veracity and purpose than the designer has previously known.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Equal division microwave power dividers are investigated in this study. A wideband Wilkinson power divider and a wideband directional coupler with a centre frequency of 10 GHz were built. The design of the directional coupler is scaled, such that it can be used between 18 and 40 GHz. The details of the electromagnetic analyses of these structures are discussed and physical implementation issues are investigated. In a complementary study to the design of planar microwave dividers, the FDTD computational method was implemented and used to analyse the Wilkinson divider and the 18 to 40 GHz directional coupler. Results are compared to those obtained from commercial numerical method packages and in the case of the Wilkinson divider, to measured results. Suggestions are made for improvements in the implementation of the directional coupler and methods for a more efficient FDTD implementation are discussed.

Modern Naval Architects use a variety of computer design tools to explore feasible options for clean sheet ship designs. Under the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (NSWCCD) has created computer tools for ship design and analysis purposes. This paper presents an overview of some of these tools, specifically the Advanced Ship and Submarine Evaluation Tool (ASSET) version 6.3 and the Integrated Hull Design Environment (IHDE). This paper provides a detailed explanation of a ship design using these advanced tools and presents methods for optimizing the performance of the hullform, the selection of engines for fuel efficiency, and the loading of engines for fuel efficiency. The detailed ship design explores the design space given a set of specific requirements for a cruiser-type naval vessel. The hullform optimization technique reduces a ships residual resistance by using both ASSET and IHDE in a Design of Experiments (DoE) approach to reaching an optimum solution. The paper will provide a detailed example resulting in a 12% reduction in total ship drag by implementing this technique on a previously designed hullform. The reduction of drag results in a proportional reduction in the amount of fuel used to push the ship through the water. The engine selection optimization technique uses MATLAB to calculate the ideal engines to use for fuel minimization. For a given speed-time or power-time profile, the code will evaluate hundreds of combinations of engines and provide the optimum engine combination and engine loading for minimizing the total fuel consumption. This optimization has the potential to reduce fuel consumption of current naval warships by upwards of 30%.

The decentralized architecture of the Internet, which has been key to its development and worldwide deployment, is making it challenging to secure Internet user experience. Many organizations claim to be playing a role in improving Internet security. If anything, the space of security-related institutions seems on first inspection to be over-populated, yet poor security persists. This work proposes a framework to understand the role different institutions play in cyber security. The analysis gives insights into the broad institutional ecosystem of public, private and international actors, and the varied nature of these institutions, their interests, incentives, and contributions to cyber security from hardware, software, protocols, standards and regulation. Based on natural language clustering algorithms, this framework classifies institutions along five dimensions: the aspect of cyber security the institution covers (e.g. network security, cybercrime), the industry and activity sector of the institution (e.g. telecommunications, software and service providers), whether it is part of a specific jurisdiction (e.g. US, Europe), specific institution's characteristics such as its working mode (e.g. forum, information sharing) or primary focus (e.g. economic development, consumer trust), and the governance type (for-profit, not-for-profit, government or international organization). We developed a dataset of approximately 120 institutions that claim a role with respect to cyber security, and using the framework, we identify areas of competing and overlapping institutional interest, relevant areas out of scope of current institutions and dysfunctionalities that hinder overall security improvement.

Designing within the landscape, architects are often challenged with the dilemma of what to build and to what extent if anything. The natural environment offers an architecture of its own parameters and rules. Building within those established parameters, architects must inform their design accordingly and responsibly. Taking cues from natural environmental processes, the design for a contemporary playscape within existing environmental conditions provides a refuge from city life for Boston area children. The design balances between the designed landscape and the natural landscape. Natural processes over time erode the playscape away so that the transformation is perceived by the children who return regularly to the site. Considerations of natural soil behavior, water drainage patterns, soil erosion, and plant invasion are instrumented into the final articulation of the playscape.
