Abstract:
AbstractThe existence of home advantage (HA) has been found in a variety of team sports including football. There is a paucity of research on the relationship between team ability and HA in domestic football leagues and the findings of previous studies are inconclusive. Using longitudinal data from the top four football divisions in England, this study investigates the influence of team ability on the HA of teams. The data collected for this study spans 24 seasons from 1995/96 to 2018/19 and includes 48,864 matches from the English Premier League (n = 9120), the Championship (n = 13,248), League One (n = 13,248) and League Two (n = 13,248). Team ability was interpreted in two ways: (1) the division in which teams play and (2) their league table position within each division. For both the divisional and positional analysis, HA was calculated as the ratio of home points to total points achieved by teams in each season under review. Evidence of a statistically significant HA was found in all four divisions and for teams of all abilities within each division. Small but statistically significant differences in HA were observed between divisions and between high, moderate and low ability teams within divisions.

Abstract:
Potting of bare-root spring divisions is a simplified approach to ornamental grass production. Large and small divisions of eight common ornamental grasses were directly potted into 7-L nursery containers and grown outdoors for 20 weeks to determine an appropriate division size for each grass. Response to division size was dependent on the grass species. Large divisions of Calamagrostis ×cutiflora `Karl Foerster' (Schräd.) produced twice as many inflorescences as small divisions. At harvest, large divisions of Miscanthus oligostachyus `Purpurascens' (Stapf.) had twice as many inflorescences and 1.5 times as many tillers as small divisions. However, new tiller production in large divisions was only 50% of that in small division plants. Large divisions of Miscanthus sinensis (Anderss.) cultivars produced more tillers and greater fresh and dry weights than did small divisions, but again, the differences were not proportional to the size difference between the initial divisions. Large divisions of Panicum virgatum (L.) produced 50 more tillers per plant than did small divisions, but plant weight, size, and number of inflorescences were not affected by division size. Plants from large divisions of Pennisetum alopecuroides (L.) Spreng. were 7 cm shorter than small divisions and produced 24% more inflorescences and 27% more tillers, but appeared nutrient and/or water stressed. For most grasses, smaller division size is recommended for direct spring potting.

Abstract:
Object. The purpose of this retrospective clinical study was to present results and provide management guidelines for various types of sciatic injuries. Methods. Over a 24-year period, 380 patients with sciatic nerve injuries were managed. In 230 patients (60%), the injury was at the buttock level, with injection injuries comprising more than half of these cases. Thigh-level sciatic injury was evaluated in 150 cases (40%) and was usually secondary to one of four main causes: 1) gunshot wound; 2) femur fracture; 3) laceration; or 4) contusion. Patients with partial deficits uncomplicated by severe pain or with significant spontaneous recovery or late referral were managed medically. Surgical exploration was not indicated in 23% of injuries at the thigh level and almost 50% of those at the buttock level. Most of these patients achieved partial but good spontaneous recovery, especially in the tibial division distribution. Surgical intervention was required for more complete and persistent deficits in either the tibial or peroneal distribution. Divisions of the sciatic nerve were split apart and evaluated independently. Management was guided by nerve action potential (NAP) recordings, which indicated whether neurolysis or resection of the lesion was required. Repair was then made by using sutures or more frequently by graft placement. In most cases in which neurolysis was performed because a positive NAP was recorded distal to the lesion, useful function was found in the peroneal distribution. Unfortunately, significant recovery occurred in only 36% of patients who received suture or graft repairs of the peroneal division. Good-to-excellent outcome was common for the tibial division, even in cases in which repair was proximal and required lengthy grafts. The relatively favorable recovery of tibial as opposed to peroneal divisions of the sciatic nerve occurred regardless of the level or mechanism of injury. Conclusions. Surgical exploration and, when necessary, repair of sciatic nerve injuries is worthwhile in selected cases.

Abstract:
How cells maintain their size has been extensively studied under constant conditions. In the wild, however, cells rarely experience constant environments. Here, we examine how the 24-h circadian clock and environmental cycles modulate cell size control and division timings in the cyanobacteriumSynechococcus elongatususing single-cell time-lapse microscopy. Under constant light, wild-type cells follow an apparent sizer-like principle. Closer inspection reveals that the clock generates two subpopulations, with cells born in the subjective day following different division rules from cells born in subjective night. A stochastic model explains how this behavior emerges from the interaction of cell size control with the clock. We demonstrate that the clock continuously modulates the probability of cell division throughout day and night, rather than solely applying an on−off gate to division, as previously proposed. Iterating between modeling and experiments, we go on to identify an effective coupling of the division rate to time of day through the combined effects of the environment and the clock on cell division. Under naturally graded light−dark cycles, this coupling narrows the time window of cell divisions and shifts divisions away from when light levels are low and cell growth is reduced. Our analysis allows us to disentangle, and predict the effects of, the complex interactions between the environment, clock, and cell size control.

Abstract:
The aim of the study was to examine the dietary intake of female amateur football players in the division 2, 3 and 5 in the middle part of Sweden. The study is a descriptive, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach. Data collection consisted of 24 hour recall interviews and a questionnaire with background information about the participant. The participants consisted of 40 female football players from divisions 2, 3 and 5. The participants' average calorie intake was estimated using the program Dietist Net Pro 1979 kilocalories (kcal)/day, compared with the average recommended daily allowance (RDA), which was estimated at 2137 kcal. The low energy consumption contributed to the participants' inability to meet the RDA for iron, folate, vitamin D, calcium, magnesium and carbohydrates. There were 19 participants who ate more than the average amount of energy and 21 participants who ate below the average amount of calories. No statistically significant differences in energy or nutrient intake could be established between the participants in different divisions or age groups. Female football players in this study were found to eat too little energy (food) on the basis of their energy needs, which may potentially contribute to nutritional deficiencies, specifically in iron, folate, vitamin D, calcium, magnesium and carbohydrates. Deficiencies in these nutrients may lead to impaired performance in training and matches, impaired general health and recovery, and to a break-down of body tissues for energy.

Hooper, Sharon. ""Move the Decimal Point and Divide": An Exploration of Students' Introduction to Division with Decimals." 2015. http://scholarworks.gsu.edu/ece_diss/24.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the pedagogical approaches used by fifth grade teachers to introduce division with decimals and the resultant understandings of students in their classrooms. The study is important because of the need for students to gain conceptually-based understandings in mathematics and the limited research on instruction and related learning of the very difficult and complex concept of division with decimals. In particular, there is limited research on strategies teachers use to develop students’ conceptual understanding of division with decimals. Therefore, the research questions are as follows. What strategies do teachers use to introduce division with decimals? When first learning to divide decimal numbers, how do fifth-grade students explain the strategies they use? The study is grounded in social constructivist learning theory and uses a collective case study methodology. Following the study design, three fifth-grade teachers from three schools were interviewed before and after an introductory lesson to division with decimals. They also were observed teaching the study lesson. Following the lesson, one to three students from each class (six in all) were interviewed on their understandings of division with decimals using their classwork from the lesson as a point of entry. The design includes three sources of data: transcriptions from semi-structured interviews of teachers and students, field notes from classroom observations, and artifacts from lessons. Results suggest that instruction of division with decimals varies such that the differences can be captured along a continuum of traditional to reform practices. The placement of the decimal point in the quotient is the focus of the discussion regardless of where the instruction lies on the continuum. Interestingly, as instruction moves towards the traditional end of the continuum, student engagement was a result of interaction with the teacher, whereas closer to the reform end of the spectrum students were engaged with the mathematics.

This thesis proposed the design of a multi-band frequency synthesizer for 400 MHz, 2.4 GHz, and 24 GHz, which is carried out by high-division-ratio prescalers. These multi-band frequency synthesizers are crucial components for implantable biomedical band, industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) bands, and collision-avoidance radar bands. The 402 MHz voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) is implemented by two-stage differential ring oscillator, and the 2.4 GHz VCO uses the architecture combining the memory reduction tail transistors to the LC-tank complementary cross-coupled pair for the high quality factor Q as well as the low phase noise to achieve overall excellent figure of merit (FOM). These designs are implemented in TSMC 0.18 μm 1P6M CMOS process. From the measurement results, the 402 MHz VCO has the wide tuning range from 234 MHz to 888 MHz, and small chip size of 0.34 x 0.27 mm2; the 2.4 GHz VCO improves the performance of 400 MHz VCO and has excellent performance in aspects of phase noise. The core power consumption is 3.096 mW, the phase noise is -123.26 dBc / Hz at 1-MHz offset frequency, and the overall FOM is excellent to achieve -185.96 dB. Then, this thesis in advance presents a multi-band 24 GHz PLL using a prescaler of divide-by-5 with the concept of linking controlled voltage to the VCO and prescaler to overcome the insufficient frequency locking range. From the simulation results, the phase noise of VCO are -103.8 dBc / Hz at 1-MHz offset and -124.2 dBc / Hz at 10-MHz offset frequency. The locked time of PLL is approximately 450 ns while the locked voltage is 0.72 V, and the overall power consumption is 31.675 mW. In addition, a 24 GHz PLL design using a ring-oscillator-based prescaler of divide-by-7 and improved Colpitts differential VCO with low phase noise is presented, and the comparisons of above mentioned PLLs are given in this thesis. From the simulation results, the phase noise are excellent to -108.38 dBc / Hz at 1-MHz offset and -129.50 dBc / Hz at 10-MHz offset frequency respectively. The locked time is 800 ns while the locked voltage is approximately 0.81 V, and the power consumption is 40.41 mW. These designs of 24 GHz PLL are implemented in TSMC TN90RF 1P9M CMOS process.

Nyirimana, Eraste. "The tribal dimension in the division of the kingdom of Israel: a contextual study of 1 Kings 12:1-24 from the perspective of the struggle for national unity in Rwanda." Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/1662.

Full text
Abstract:
This study aims to undertake a contextual analysis of the event of the division of the kingdom of Israel narrated in1 Kings 12:1-24. This text and its context are analysed in the light of the context of tribal conflicts in Rwanda, using the inculturation hermeneutical approach that makes the contemporary context of the reader the subject of interpretation. The interactive engagement between the two contexts is conducted in a way that allows insights from each context to enrich the understanding of the other. The socio-historical analysis of the Rwandan context showed that the 1994 genocide resulted from a long period of social conflict opposing the main social groups in Rwanda namely the Hutu and the Tutsi. Conflicts arose from the determination of elites from each social group to monopolize political power and to control resources, to the exclusion of members of the other social group. It was noted that the failure of the church to discharge its prophetic responsibility reinforced the perception that God was absent during the genocide. The literary analysis of the text narrating the division of the kingdom of Israel noted the theological interpretation that explained that event as a result of Yahweh’s punitive intervention against an apostate king, Solomon. However, literary analysis showed that the conflict involved socio-economic aspects and had much to do with the struggle for access and for the sharing of resources. Socio-historical analysis of the context of the division then revealed that, from the rise of the monarchy in Israel, the issue of the control and distribution of resources had been a challenge to unity among the tribes of Israel, generating conflicts that culminated in the division of the kingdom. Interaction between the two contexts of conflict, in Rwanda and in Israel, allowed for the identification of categories of players who had a share of responsibility in the conflicts. First, political leaders instituted patrimonial regimes that practised inequitable distribution of resources and privileges and antagonised social groups in both contexts. Second, the people, faced with the discriminative policies of their leaders, grouped themselves according to their shared interests or common challenges. Diverging or opposing interests among different groups exacerbated divisions, alienation and conflicts. Third, neighbouring countries and external powers had strategic or economic interests that led them to intervene in support of the warring social groups, thus aggravating the situation. Lastly, God’s servants, who were supposed to play a unifying role, failed in their prophetic responsibility, not only by doing nothing to denounce social injustices, but by openly supporting them and actively taking part in them. This study has reasoned that social conflicts result from diverging interests. They are a human responsibility, not imposed by God. Diverse social identities are not intrinsic obstacles to social unity. They jeopardize unity when they give expression to conflicting interests. Change for lasting peace and unity in Rwanda requires a change of attitude from the four categories of players identified as the key protagonists.

Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is to study and develop novel, low complexity physical layer algorithms for Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) based communication systems. The study aims at two algorithmic categories, namely adaptive modulation and coding and compensation of severe phase noise (PHN) errors. A parameterized windowed least-squares (WLS) decision directed phase error estimator is proposed via proper (alternative) system modeling, applied to both channel estimation and data detection stage in OFDM systems. The window is optimized so as to minimize the post-compensation error variance (PCEV) of the residual phase, analytically computed for arbitrary PHN and frequency offset (FO) models. Closed-form expressions for near-optimal windows are derived for zero-mean FO, Wiener and first-order autoregressive PHN models, respectively. Furthermore, the diagonal-loading approach is properly employed, initially proposed for providing robustness to a general class of estimators in the presence of model mismatch, to enhance convergence of the iterative estimation scheme, in those high-SNR regions where the effect of data decision errors dominates performance. In the proposed OFDM scheme, channel, IFO estimation and data equalization are also based on the LS criterion, thus keeping the overall system complexity low. A generic performance description model is proposed and used for AMC algorithmic design, capable of describing most of current and under preparation communication protocols. This model proposition is incorporated to a larger family of performance modelling techniques named Effective SNR Mapping techniques (ESM). Using the ESM techniques and proper parameter adaptation constraints, a number of low-complexity AMC algorithms are developed under a chosen set of optimization scenarios. A framework for the design of AMC algorithms using approximate performance description models is proposed. Specific bounds are derived for quantifying the power loss when using approximate models. The effect of outdated channel state information is also studied by statistically characterizing the effective SNR at the receiver. This description allows parameter adaptation under mobility scenarios. The main value of this collective procedure is the development of low complexity- high performance algorithms, implementable on pragmatic OFDM systems.

Abstract:
Compared to the evolutionary psychology of mating, the evolutionary demography of unions is little developed. We know quite a bit about why and how people have sex, much less about why and how they have spouses. Yet couples continue to be a central building block of families, the biosocial tie within which most adults live, most sex takes place, and through which most children are made and raised. Arguably, sexual selection in humans happens through long-term pair bonds rather than short-term relationships. Evolutionary theory approaches unions as reproductive contracts: a precarious balance of conflict and compromise between individual reproductive and sexual strategies. Sexual strategies are predicted to vary especially with age, gender and resources, but also with ecological and social conditions such as increasing gender equality and lower fertility. This chapter discusses the formation of unions in high-income, increasingly gender equal societies from the intersection of family demography and evolutionary studies. How is selection of spouses affected by having more highly educated women in the population? Why does contemporary family formation often involve a stage of cohabitation before marriage? I argue that sexual strategies theory could move beyond the division into short-term versus long-term pair bonds, and suggest that cohabitation represents one mid-term form of temporal and psychological commitment to a romantic partner.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the EU law on external relations. It explores the complex division of competences between the Member States and the Union, and between the different institutions of the Union in the field of external action; the applicable decision-making procedures, including the procedure for concluding international agreements; the Union’s composite system of external representation; and how the Union manages the vertical (between the Union and the Member States) and horizontal (between the different Institutions and policy fields of the EU) division of its external competences.

Abstract:
This paper is part of an ongoing endeavor to bring the theory of fair division closer to practice by handling requirements from real-life applications. We focus on two requirements originating from the division of land estates: (1) each agent should receive a plot of a usable geometric shape, and (2) plots of different agents must be physically separated. With these requirements, the classic fairness notion of proportionality is impractical, since it may be impossible to attain any multiplicative approximation of it. In contrast, the ordinal maximin share approximation, introduced by Budish in 2011, provides meaningful fairness guarantees. We prove upper and lower bounds on achievable maximin share guarantees when the usable shapes are squares, fat rectangles, or arbitrary axes-aligned rectangles, and explore the algorithmic and query complexity of finding fair partitions in this setting.

Meyer, Erik. Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve: Acoustic monitoring report, 2017. National Park Service, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/2303262.

Full text
Abstract:
This study arose from the Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve (CRMO) Resource Stewardship Strategy (RSS), which identified the need for baseline acoustic surveys in the park. Short-term natural soundscape RSS goals were to identify the condition of the acoustic resource, and the high priority stewardship activity associated with this goal was to collect baseline acoustic data. Therefore, from June?September 2017, the Natural Sounds and Night Skies Division (NSNSD) gathered acoustical data at six sites in CRMO to provide park managers with information about the acoustical environment, sources of noise, and the natural and existing ambient sound levels within the park. On average, noise was present from 7 to 85 percent of the time across the six sites. The most common sources of noise were vehicles, aircraft, and people. The maximum percent time audible for any detailed noise source was people at site CRMO004, audible for 81% of a 24-hr period. Aircraft was most audible at site CRMO005 (15%), and vehicles were most audible at site CRMO001 (20%). Overall, existing median ambient sound levels (LA50) at sites within CRMO ranged from 17.8?31.1 dB during the day and 15.6?34.0 dB at night during the sampling period. Natural ambient sound levels (LAnat) at sites within CRMO ranged from 16.4?30.0 dB during the day and 15.1?33.0 dB at night. The median impact, defined as the difference in dB between the LA50 and LAnat, was 1.4 dB. Noise impacts ranged from 1.1 dB at CRMO006 to 8.3 dB at CRMO004, where noise was audible for 100% of the time from 07:00 to 10:00.

Abstract:
This study arose from the Cabrillo National Monument (CABR) Resource Stewardship Strategy (RSS), which identified the need for baseline acoustic surveys in the park. One of the RSS stewardship goals was to minimize anthropogenic sounds outside and inside park boundaries to enhance the visitor experience. A Technical Assistance Request (TAR) for natural sounds inventory was submitted to the Natural Sounds and Night Skies Division. Therefore, in May 2021, the NSNSD gathered acoustic data at two sites in CABR to provide park managers with information about the acoustic environment, sources of noise, and the existing ambient sound levels within the park. On average, noise was present from 95 to 99 percent of the time across the two sites. The most common sources of noise were aircraft, motor sounds, and a foghorn. The maximum percent time audible for any detailed noise source was the foghorn at site CABR001, audible for 95% of a 24-hr period over 10 days of listening. Motor sounds were most audible at site CABR002, audible for 68% of the time. Overall, existing ambient sound levels (LA50) at sites at CABR were 39.5 and 43.1 dB during the day and 34.7 and 42.5 dB at night during the sampling period (CABR001 and CABR002, respectively). Natural ambient sound levels (LAnat) were 30.2 and 38.0 dB during the day and 26.6 and 38.4 dB at night for CABR001 and CABR002 respectively, although these measurements were likely influenced by the high prevalence of noise. As a supplement, a geospatial sound model predicts existing and natural ambient sound levels at CABR are 46.0 (dBA) and 31.4 (dBA), respectively.
