Abstract:
From the perspective of evolutionary biology, diversity is an intrinsic feature of any living species and a target on which natural selection can act in opposite ways: either decreasing it (stabilizing selection) or increasing it (diversifying selection). This duality is reflected in our emotional attitude toward diversity. This chapter summarizes current knowledge on the evolutionary origins of emotional reactions to physical and behavioral diversity in human cultures. After a preliminary discussion of “alternative strategies” observed by ethologists in primate species, the chapter explores the biological roots of intolerance, xenophobia, racism, discrimination, and other forms of rejection of diversity. Findings that have linked ethnocentrism to primitive defenses against infectious diseases are reviewed. Subsequently, the chapter describes how a bias toward “normality” has always lived alongside a powerful attraction to diversity. The chapter closes with reflections based on recent psychiatric and anthropological reports that show how the issue of tolerance of cultural diversity is an unsolved problem, in spite of reassuring claims of the advocates of cultural relativism.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the conceptual diversity of expressions of resurrection in a variety of early Jewish writings (Daniel, 1 Enoch, 2 Maccabees, 4 Ezra, 2 Baruch, Messianic Apocalypse, Pseudo-Ezekiel). Two categories, in particular, appear to have offered broad fluctuation. First, differing modes of embodiment may be identified within the evidence, including beliefs about the fate of the deceased body, as well as varied assumptions about what the newly embodied eschatological life would be like. Second, representations of resurrection also differ in how they locate human destiny within the larger spatial parameters of the cosmos. This diversity has sometimes been interpreted as a deficiency within early Jewish theologies, yet the present chapter explains this as the result of the adaptability of resurrection to a variety of intellectual contexts, a factor that accelerated the reception of resurrection as a widespread eschatological belief, even among competing groups.

Abstract:
This chapter investigates the epistemic advantages of diversity, especially the effect of uncorrelated and negatively correlated votes. It also considers the influence of Hong and Page’s ‘diversity trumps ability’ theorem. One way to recognize the positive epistemic effect of diversity is to consider what happens if diversity is missing. Aggregating many voters who always vote in sync is pointless because no new, independent information is added by these ‘cloned’ voters. Consequently, if voters derive all their information from a small set of media channels or opinion leaders, the epistemic output deteriorates. Avoiding correlation is good, but even better outcomes can be achieved if votes are negatively correlated. We demonstrate the effect with a small example, but suggest that negative vote correlation is rare in realistic settings and difficult to ‘engineer’.
