Abstract:
With increased globalization of the competitive business environment, companies must adjust their operating practices to accommodate the cultural styles, norms, and preferences of the regions of the world in which they operate. This chapter reviews theories and research related to global diversity management (GDM). In addition, a framework for studying the meaning, operation, and management of diversity across national borders is presented. In particular, the shift of emphasis from normative and process-based approaches to a contextual and multifaceted understanding of GDM is explored. The chapter also explores key challenges and contradictions facing GDM. Finally, future directions in research and practice are discussed.

Abstract:
Diversity management is an increasingly mature field defined by a wide array of conceptual approaches and competing discourses of diversity. This chapter briefly reviews the field of diversity to locate our discussion of a crucial problematic in global diversity management: implementing global diversity management standards locally. We take the UK as the local context for our analysis, and report findings from a study funded by the Equal Opportunities Commission on the use of equality and diversity tools. Our empirical evidence underscores the importance of localities and specific contexts, and emphasizes that equality and diversity tools can serve as an effective resource for local diversity officers of global firms to progress their agendas for organizational change locally. In the UK context effective diversity management crucially hinges on securing the buy-in of businesses and providing context-sensitive toolkits to local diversity management officers and organizational change agents to ensure equality and inclusion.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the globalizing trajectory of the concept of diversity management from a decolonial perspective. This decolonial analysis is undertaken by a ‘local’ researcher from an emerging economy in Latin America (more specifically, Brazil) who also takes part into the US-led ‘global’ MOS academy. The basic argument is that diversity management is a controversial concept due to its attachment to Eurocentric narratives of modernity/coloniality, which have been transformed into ‘universal’ knowledge by mechanisms of knowledge management inaugurated when European conquerors discovered and conquered America over five centuries ago. The colonial side of diversity management is unveiled in order to open space for decolonial possibilities that have been negated and to the reframing of diversity management.
