Abstract:
The American higher education system consists of over 4,700 institutions educating over twenty-one million students. The most striking feature of this system is its diversity. There is no “typical college.” Much of the story about the future of America’s four-year higher education institutions is found in their differences, not their similarities. Schools are public and private, large and small, elite and open enrollment, tuition dependent and well endowed, liberal arts oriented and vocational. The challenges facing America’s colleges and universities will affect the diverse parts of this system in very different ways. Generalizing about this system can be very dangerous.

Abstract:
The global political economy is a multilevel system of economic activities and regulation in which the domestic level continues to predominate—in other words, it is a global system comprising national capitalist economies. Nations differ in terms of the regulations and institutions that govern economic activity, an observation that is embodied in the so-called “varieties of capitalism” (VoC) literature. Contemporary VoC approaches highlight the significance of social and political institutions in shaping national economies, in stark contrast to neoclassical economics which generally ignores institutions other than markets or sees them as hindrances to the functioning of free markets. Three analytical premises inform the diverse conceptual frameworks within the VoC literature: the firm-based approach, national business systems approach, and the governance or “social systems of production” approach. The VoC literature offers three important contributions to our understanding of the global political economy. The first is that different sources of competitive advantage for firms and nations are institutionally rooted and not easily changed. The second contribution is that these distinct national arrangements give rise to different interests/preferences in how the global economy is constructed and managed. Finally, the VoC approaches provide a framework for analyzing long-term institutional changes in capitalist systems and the persistence of diverse forms of capitalism, including the global financial crisis of 2008–2009 that may usher in yet another epochal change in the “battle of capitalisms.”

Abstract:
During the 1860s, a cult of sensation took full hold of cultures across much of Western Europe and North America; as the term “sensation” implies, this craze was linked to developments in neurology. This chapter focuses on one particular network in the construction of the modern neural subject, a network that connects elements as seemingly diverse as railway trains, changing notions of risk and trauma, and the newly popular form of melodrama dubbed “sensation drama,” with the emblematic scenario of the person tied to the train tracks and rescued in the nick of time. This “railway rescue” scenario emerged in the late 1860s, spread like wildfire, and continued in our collective consciousness to the present. This chapter traces the explosive rise and iconic significance of this scenario, and concludes by reading a Dickens short story that reflects on melodrama and the ghostly traumas of industrialized sensation.

Piñeiro, Martín. The Global Food System. Teseo, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.55778/ts877233391.

Full text
Abstract:

Food production results from the activities of very complex national food systems. These systems are led by agriculture but comprise large and diverse industrial, distribution and trading activities that supply food to end consumers. These national systems are integrated through international trade into a powerful global food system that constitutes the main economic activity for 40% of the global population.

The global food system must be able to provide quality food in sufficient quantities and at reasonable prices to satisfy the needs and expectations of all consumers. One of the greatest challenges in our days is developing balanced food systems, capable of responding to the particular needs of individual countries and regions, as well as to the global needs of humanity.

An important first step in addressing this challenge was the Food Systems Summit convened by the Secretary-General of the United Nations in September 2021. On that occasion, the Western Hemisphere, in its role as the world’s major food exporter, had a significant participation in the deliberations and in building consensus, arguing in favor of designing rules and disciplines to improve international food trade.

This book attempts to make a modest contribution, from a Latin American perspective, to the discussion and consensus building processes for the development of a balanced and effective global food system.

Abstract:
What is a complex system? Although “complexity science” is used to understand phenomena as diverse as the behavior of honeybees, the economic markets, the human brain, and the climate, there is no agreement about its foundations. In this introduction for students, academics, and general readers, the authors develop an account of complexity that brings the different concepts and mathematical measures applied to complex systems into a single framework. The book begins with an overview and a brief history of complexity science. Complexity science is relatively new but already indispensable. Many of the most important problems in engineering, medicine, and public policy are now addressed with the ideas and methods of complexity science. The conceptual foundations of complexity science are disputed, and there are many and diverging views among scientists about what complexity and complex systems are. Its origins lie in cybernetics and systems theory and it is related to dynamical systems theory and the study of cellular automata. The book introduces the different features of complex systems and discusses different conceptions of complexity with the authors documenting their own account. In do so, they explain why complexity science is so important in today's world.

Full text
Abstract:
The 1944 Bretton Woods Conference, which created the International Monetary Fund and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, was a major landmark in international cooperation. However, the Bretton Woods system came under increasing pressure in the 1960s due to the lack of a reliable adjustment mechanism to manage payment imbalances as well as the persistent asymmetries in the balance-of-payments pressures faced by surplus and deficit countries. In 1971 the system effectively collapsed when the US government suspended convertibility of dollars into gold for other central banks—a decision that would prove to be permanent. The system that evolved to replace it can be viewed as a ‘non-system’ with diverse ad hoc arrangements. Viewed overall this non-system has proved to be fairly resilient, but some of its major gaps continue to have negative effects on the global economy.
