Abstract:
The 1996 Commemorative Proteaceae Conference drew attention to the large body of work proceeding on all southern continents, the extensive and informative fossil record, and the wide range of studies in ecology and reproductive biology. DNA sequence data and organogeny are producing major insights at the upper taxonomic levels, new phylogenetic hypotheses and classifications are emerging in respect of the recognition of subfamilies and the relationships and composition of tribes, and there is also evidence from morphology and DNA sequence data that several genera are paraphyletic.

Full text
Abstract:
Herbicides have been the principal means of weed control in developed countries for approximately 50 yr because they are the most cost-effective method. Such general use of herbicides has resulted in weed resistance to herbicides, which continues to be a growing problem. Within the past decade, the evolution of resistance to the once-dominant herbicide glyphosate has resulted in major concerns about the future ability to control weeds in many crop systems. Moreover, many weed species have evolved resistance to multiple mechanisms of herbicide action. Given the dearth of new herbicides with novel mechanisms of action, it appears inevitable that weed management programs will need to be supplemented by the use of tactics other than herbicides. However, the inclusion of more diversity for weed management also introduces complexity, cost, and time constraints to current crop production systems. This paper describes broadly the considerations, opportunities, and constraints of diverse weed management tactics to address the burgeoning problems with herbicide resistance.

Abstract:
Management of scoliosis in young children needs a comprehensive approach because of its complexity. There are many debatable points; however, only serial casting, growing rods (including traditional and magnetically controlled) and anterior vertebral body tethering will be discussed in this article. Serial casting is a time-gaining method for postponing surgical interventions in early onset scoliosis, despite the fact that it has some adverse effects which should be considered and discussed with the family beforehand. Use of growing rods is a growth-friendly surgical technique for the treatment of early onset spine deformity which allows chest growth and lung development. Magnetically controlled growing rods are effective in selected cases although they sometimes have a high number of unplanned revisions. Anterior vertebral body tethering seems to be a promising novel technique for the treatment of idiopathic scoliosis in immature cases. It provides substantial correction and continuous curve control while maintaining mobility between spinal segments. However, long-term results, adverse effects and their prevention should be clarified by future studies. Cite this article: EFORT Open Rev 2020;5:753-762. DOI: 10.1302/2058-5241.5.190087

Abstract:
Microwave-accelerated methods have emerged as powerful tools in organic synthesis to enhance the reaction rates and provide products with high yields, improved selectivity, lower energy consumption, mild reaction conditions and negligible waste generation. Xanthenes are an important class of biologically important oxygen-containing heterocyclic molecules that possess a multitude of pharmaceutical properties. By considering the medicinal and material significance of these molecules, a large number of synthetic methodologies and catalytic systems have been reported for the synthesis of a wide range of xanthenes in the past. However, the focus of the present review is to summarize various microwave-assisted protocols for the synthesis of diversely substituted xanthene analogues.

Abstract:
: The efficacy of successful cancer therapies is frequently hindered by the development of drug resistance in the tumor. The term ‘drug resistance’ is used to illustrate the decreased effectiveness of a drug in curing a disease or alleviating the symptoms of the patient. This phenomenon helps tumors to survive the damage caused by a specific drug or group of drugs. In this context, studying the mechanisms of drug resistance and applying this information to design customized treatment regimens can improve therapeutic efficacy as well as the curative outcome. Over the years, numerous Multidrug Resistance (MDR) mechanisms have been recognized and tremendous effort has been put into developing agents to address them. The integration of data emerging from the elucidation of molecular and biochemical pathways and specific tumor-associated factors has shown tremendous promise within the oncology community for improving patient outcomes. In this review, we provide an overview of the utility of these molecular and biochemical signaling processes as well as tumor-associated factors associated with MDR, for the rational selection of cancer treatment strategies.

Abstract:
Abstract Asking older adults What Matters to them and assuring that care plans are aligned with these preferences is the cornerstone of an Age-Friendly Health System (AFHS). Health systems have struggled to identify clear ways to ask this question and meaningfully utilize the responses. Both simple and complex options for addressing this challenge have been developed at Rush University Medical Center. At Rush, nurses began asking every inpatient What Matters and placing the response on the white board in the patient’s room. Results of this practice include increased awareness of staff and significant increases in patient satisfaction. Qualitative analysis of responses yields increased awareness of patterns that the hospital can more systematically address. The Rush Center for Excellence in Aging hosts Schaalman Senior Voices, in which older adults from diverse backgrounds are given the unique opportunity to offer their perspectives on life, health and aging related to “What Matters” to them. The films have been used effectively to stimulate conversations among older adults and families in the community and in health professions courses, and with health systems executives. The Rush College of Medicine has integrated AFHS training into communication skills for medical students. Faculty introduce the 4Ms and demonstrate methods for having What Matters (WM) conversations. Students then practice WM conversations with simulated patients; some have had the opportunity to practice with real patients in preceptorships. Implications for the health system and community will be discussed as Rush builds an Age-Friendly Health Community.

Full text
Abstract:
Smooth, chemically uniform surfaces are seldom found in nature. Mimicry of natural variegation is a powerful approach for controlling chemical affinity at the nanoscale. Molecular recognition is one of the fundamental concepts underlying the functioning of living cells, and it depends on a particular relationship between the nanoscale, i.e., molecular, variegations of two potentially interacting molecular partners. The primary subject matter of this paper is how to articially generate appropriate nanoscale texture at the surfaces of materials. Excluding "pick and place" chemistry, in which essentially a Maxwellian demon intervenes to place objects with atomic precision, and nowadays achievable through an adaptation of atomic force microscopy, on the grounds that it is too slow to be practicable for fabricating useful quantities of material, three approaches are explored in some detail: (i) "powder", i.e., mixing at least two individually monofunctional (with respect to the ultimate molecular recognition task) precursor components (possibly with secondary functionality enabling them to appropriately self-assemble on a substratum); (ii) mixing polymers with the possibility of phase separation and frustrated phase separation with block copolymers; and (iii) felting. The emphasis is on processes that create more or less irregular structures, rather than regular arrays. The final section deals with the metrology of nanotexture.
