Abstract:
This paper aims to provide an overview of the technological perspectives of Romanian combat divers,to present the current status and possible development directions towards state-of-the-art capabilities in line with the needs of the Romanian Naval Forces and the Special Operations Forces Command as beneficiaries. The article uses domain observation and analysis, both longitudinal and cross-sectional, of military divers, dedicated to identify current capabilities, technological trends for combat divers as well as to highlight the importance they represent within the Naval Forces, taking into account the contribution and especially the role that combat divers play in countering the hybrid threats of the current security environment. For this paper, we have set out to identify the current state of the capabilities of Romanian combat divers, to this end we will present the possibilities of their use for military purposes and identify possible missions that they can perform in the Black Sea area. Moreover, we will highlight technological perspectives on the modernisation and development of the military capabilities concerning combat divers. The novelty of this article stems from the analysis and highlighting of the effective use of combat divers through new technological possibilities in response to the challenges of the new security context. Through this paper, we address to master students and personnel of the Naval Forces, to those who contribute to the implementation of feasible ideas at the level of the Romanian Naval Forces and wish to develop the capabilities of combat divers to deter the actions of a potential adversary.

Abstract:
AbstractRebreather divers use LED-based head-up displays (HUD) as a primary display and warning device for the partial pressure of O2 in the breathing loop. Such devices are usually mounted on the mouthpiece of the rebreather in the field of vision of the diver. LED-based HUDs are simple devices and can be designed so that they are easy to understand but have limited information content. Few alphanumeric or graphical screen-based HUDs have been developed in the past. Connecting such a device to a rebreather requires cable links, which divers dislike, and increases the risk of entanglement. State-of-the-art wireless data transmission uses ultrasonic waves or low-frequency electromagnetic waves; the former is not silent, and the latter achieves only very low data transmission rates of a few bytes per second and does not meet the antimagnetic standards required by military divers. The present paper describes a novel HUD system that incorporates a simple LED-based primary HUD along with an advanced secondary head-up diving computer with a micro organic LED screen. An optical infrared data transmission system is used to transmit all rebreather relevant data from the primary to the secondary device. One prototype of the system was manufactured and successfully tested in the laboratory according to relevant European standards as well as during several dives in fresh and sea water.

Abstract:
Photography has served the purpose of documentation, information, education and creation of works of art. Telling stories without the illustrations such as what photography provides is somehow abstractive. Creative photography as evident in the works of Smart-Cole has aided the proliferation of images arising from improvement in technology than any other work of art. This study investigates photography through the lens of literature; how Sunmi Smart-Cole found his métier in photography and analysed moments and memories in the works of Sunmi Smart-Cole. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with Smart-Cole, and from journal articles, books, and Internet sources. Data collected were analysed using the descriptive approach of art historical research. The study argues that with photography, the world is offered a series of discrete histories and sets of anecdotes and faits divers. It concludes that Smart-Cole’s photographs generally arouse interest, desire and curiosity, they also reflect spontaneity; the narratives are useful memories that aid the remembering of diverse contexts of identity, and the socio-political history of the Nigerian nation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
My stoneware sculptures in my MFA final project were named Earth Divers because clay as a material is earth and clay is also symbolic of the Earth. The way that I physically dive into clay up to my elbows is a poetic performance. The sculptures were built in sections horizontally and then stacked vertically. I began the process by first making life size plaster molds of the human figure taken from live people. Earth Divers take their architectural structure specifically from the organic curves of the negative voids that are characteristic of the plaster figure molds. I built into these plaster molds a block or brick like section. I then removed the large block sections from the molds and stacked the sections one on top of the other combining the figurative and architectural structures with gothic influence. The sculptor, Stephen De Staebler, who works in a similar fashion, describes his work as, "... first laying the figure down and later standing it in a vertical position." The way of life that was lost with the manufacturing past of my family at Castone Brick is found in the use of industrial nostalgia by modeling I-beam shapes as part of the structure of the stacked sections. I also fired nuts, bolts, and washers of various sizes in the clay that build the surface of the human forms. The square nut seen in my work is no longer being manufactured and is symbolic of the passing of the industrial age in America. Finally, to build the surfaces of my sculptures I used slips, glazes, and a variety of clays on top of clay, and laid glass fragments on the horizontal surfaces to create a look of pooled water when my work was fired similar to what I have seen in the Lehman Caves in Baker, Nevada. "I believe there is a force in this world that lives beneath the surface, something primitive and wild that awakens when you need an extra push just to survive, like wild flowers that bloom after a fire turns the forest black. Most people are afraid of it and keep it buried deep inside themselves. But, there will always be a few people who have the courage to love what is untamed inside us." (Tim McGraw)

Abstract:
This work focuses on a corpus of 492 crime news items released in Parisian dailies between 1836 and 1881 and aims at showing how this specific journalistic discourse quotesother forms of discourse (particularly professional ones). The stylistic approach chosen, using discourse analysis tools, underlines the way those technolects circulate in crime news items and shows they are not so much explicit quotes as borrowings from interdiscourses often made up of clichés and ready-made, set phrases. This freezing of the crime news item is what stands out here: a narrative, syntactic and lexical freezing, stemming sometimes straight from the discourses from which it borrows. Both the crime news items and the discourses borrowedtend to fictionalize or even invent a drama. The work focuses on the quote within the journalistic space, so as to highlight how the crime news item writers make someone else’s article their own and studies the writers’ posture (as an over or an under-enunciator) regarding the original text. This same posture is also questioned in relation to both medical and police interdiscourses, which are the two privileged sources of information for crime news items. In the same time, the analysis refers to contemporary novels, whether serials or realist and naturalist works, before focusing on their relationships to crime news items. The aim is thus to show how the crime news item is a multiple-voice discourse which also circulates in the literature of that time

Monnier, Ariane. Paris, EHESS, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014EHES0631.

Full text
Abstract:
Based on ethnographic fieldwork carried out in France in 2011 and 2012 in the setting of three criminal trials related to criminal facts which occured between 1998 and 2008 in Ajaccio, Béziers and Castelnau-Le-Lez, the thesis analyses the crime scene reconstruction in these cases from the perspective of a performance. The notion of performance is explored in a double meaning: in the sense of an exploit - a successful exploitation of the data - as well as in the sense of an unpredictable show. The information used by the judicial reconstruction is considered as the scattered remains after an explosion, of which a more or less significant part has been lost, and further misplaced by the judicial proceeding. The thesis attempts to resolve the following interrogation: at the cost of what sort of discrepancies and absences are these remains set up together and put on display? At first a spectator and a witness to the hearing, the anthropologist goes back in time through the trial, and becomes a stage director with hindsight, running against the flow of the situations observed and the situations reported. The facts are considered successively from the perspective of the narratives and images they entail just after being discovered; from the perspective of the speeches by which they attempt to be elucidated; from the the perspective of the spectacle of words, bodies and objects in which they result. The visual, discursive and scenographic acts of force all along the proceedings are described in relation to an omnipresnet missing part - the source of other dangers

Abstract:
Art education scholars have redefined multicultural teaching practices to include a need for addressing social inequities. To understand art educators’ multicultural teaching practices, it is important to measure the extent to which they present cultural diversity in the classroom and present a racially diverse pool of artists. The purpose of this this quantitative, nonexperimental study was to measure the extent to which practicing K–12 art educators who are members of the National Art Education Association (NAEA) engage students with racially diverse artists and cultures within their curricula. The study aimed to measure the extent that educators address racial and cultural diversity in their classrooms. The study also gathered data on which resources participants indicated would help create and implement curricula that addresses racially diverse artists and cultures. Finally, the study explored the relationships between seven different teachers’ self-reported attributes and the extent that they taught about and valued racial/cultural diversity. The findings show that educators taught about racial and cultural diversity to regularly in their classroom practices and they also voiced a need for more resources to teach more about racially diverse artists and cultures, specifically visual resources and education/training regarding racially/culturally diverse content. Findings also indicated that educators who taught 21+ years, taught predominantly students of color, and those who were more comfortable with conversations pertaining to racial/cultural diversity were more likely to value the importance of racial/cultural diversity in their curricula. The results suggest that resources, such as education, training, or professional development, should be offered to educators in the field so that they may continue learning new language concerning diversity as perceptions and understandings continue to shift.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Regarding my doctoral project, I am conducting research on the analysis and the commentary of the account book by Lorenzo Lotto. It is held at historical archive in Loreto, and it is better known as Libro di spese diverse, an apocryphal name which we find on the front page. We can consider it as one of the most important document for the Italian Renaissance studies: indeed, the Lotto’s document refers to meetings with patrons, colleagues and friends, showing his lifestyle as well as his professional activity. This research focuses the attention on the artist reading this source more correctly: in the past times the Libro di spese diverse was considered a diary and it was studied by a wrong point of view.

Abstract:
Military diving operations are routinely conducted in what can be one of the most inhospitable environments on the planet, frequently characterized by zero visibility. The inability to clearly see the immediate operational environment has historically been a serious limitation to manned diving operations — whether the mission is ship husbandry, under water construction, salvage, or scientific research. U.S. Navy diving is an integral part of the nation’s defense strategy with a continuing requirement to conduct manned intervention in the water column. To ensure technical superiority across the entire spectrum of diving operations we must identify, exploit, and de velop technology to advance the state-of-the-art in diving equipment. This can only be achieved by investing in, and supporting, focused research and development with specific goals to further diving capabilities. Under a project sponsored by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), the Naval Surface Warfare Center-Panama City Division (NSWC PCD) has de veloped a prototype see-through head-up display system for a U. S. Navy diving helmet — the Divers Augmented Vision Display (DAVD). The DAVD system uses waveguide optical display modules that couple images from a micro display into a waveguide optic, translate the images through a series of internal reflections, finally exiting toward the diver’s eye providing a magnified, see-through virtual image at a specific distance in front of the diver. The virtual images can be critical information and sensor data including sonar images, ship husbandry and underwater construction schematics, enhanced navigation displays, augmented reality, and text messages. NSWC PCD is the U.S. Navy’s leading laboratory for research, development, testing, evaluation, and technology transition of diver visual display systems; with unique facilities for rapid prototyping and manufacturing, human systems integration and extreme environment testing. Along with NSWC PCD, the Navy Experimental Diving Unit (NEDU), and Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center (NDSTC) are co-located tenant commands at the Naval Support Activity Panama City (NSA PC). This paper provides a brief background on the development of diver head-up display systems, waveguide optical display technology, development of the DAVD prototype, results of diver evaluations, and recommendations for accelerated development of this game changing capability.

Abstract:
Abstract Concrete is a fundamental component in civil, commercial, and industrial infrastructure. Periodic inspection is mandated to ensure safe operation during the structure’s lifetime. Recent innovations in inspection technology have enabled rapid characterization of the interior of a concrete specimen with techniques like ground penetrating radar and phased array ultrasonic tomography. A universal limitation of these conventional methods is that they are best documented for in-air application, with comparatively scant literature available for underwater deployment. Visual inspections and diver deployed semi-destructive tests are the main modes of underwater concrete inspection. Underwater, concrete structures encounter harsher conditions and larger weathering effects compared to those above. Underwater inspections sites often have poor visibility, strong currents and debris, making manned inspections risky. Divers also have limited inspection time and depth, decreasing scope and increasing asset downtime. To overcome those limitations, this paper proposes the use of remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs) to perform quantitative non-destructive tests on underwater concrete structures. ROVs developed by Planys Technologies are compact, lightweight, and versatile. They are capable of extended inspection times, and operational depths of up to 200 m. These ROVs can be deployed by a crew of 2-3 personnel and are remotely controlled from a safe location above water. One of the most well-known techniques, ultrasonic pulse velocimetry, was adapted for the marine environment. While foundational when compared to the state-of-the-art in-air techniques, it is still capable of providing a quantitative measure of a concrete structure’s integrity. The paper describes experimental results from in-lab and in-field testing, as well as limitations to practical applications.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Passive methods of protecting a diver from cold exposures are constantly being sought as alternatives to active heating systems. All passive thermal protection techniques share one common advantage over their active heating counterparts; they have no requirement for energy storage or energy distribution. This advantage tends to make passive protection less complex and usually less expensive. Unfortunately in severe cold water, passive systems have customarily required divers to use thick, layered insulating garments worn beneath waterproof diving suits to reduce the loss of body heat to the surrounding cold water. These suits tend to be excessively bulky — inhibiting diver mobility; inherently buoyant — requiring 40–60 pounds of lead weights to make the diver neutrally buoyant; difficult to keep waterproof — an uncertainty that could fatally reduce the diver’s thermal protection during long duration missions; and only minimally effective in protecting the divers’ extremities. Even the best conventional drysuits have been found to be inadequate to meet the full requirements for long duration missions in near freezing waters. The objective of the research reported in this paper has been to provide the diving community with improvements in thermal protection for long duration, cold water missions. The unconventional approach proposed here, the use of liquids as an insulating medium for divers’ suits, shows promise as a means of significantly surpassing the performance, and acceptable durations, of conventional drysuits. Laboratory testing of conceptual insulating concepts are reported.

Abstract:
Abstract. This paper presents an overview of a solution to address the issue of marine traffic endangering scuba diving and free diving. Diving is a popular recreational activity, and it is estimated that there are around six million active scuba divers worldwide. When diving, it is essential to signal one's presence with universal markers, however, boat drivers do not always recognize them and can speed too close to dive zones, posing a risk to divers. To mitigate these risks, a multi-unmanned vehicle system consisting of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), an Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV), and an Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV) has been developed. The proposed system works in synergy to monitor and protect divers. The UAV monitors the surface of the sea near the dive zone for any traffic, while the USV tracks the UUV, communicates with the other unmanned vehicles, and provides a takeoff/landing surface for the UAV. The USV can also be used to tow divers and equipment to/from the shore. Finally, the UUV tracks the diver and warns them if it is unsafe to surface. The paper provides an overview of the design and system's architecture, algorithms for boat detection, precision landing and UUV tracking, as well as preliminary tests carried out on the prototype. The proposed system is found to be suitable for the intended application. The BEA (Buoy Eau Air) system is the first in the world to use a multi-drone system to create a geo-fence around the diver and monitor the area within it. The paper also highlights the potential benefits of such a system for the touristic sector, especially for countries where diving is a popular recreational activity.

Full text
Abstract:
Much of the industries offshore pipeline system, especially in water depths of 100 ft. or less, is approaching its design life. As this pipeline system ages, the likelihood of a failure due to erosion and/or corrosion in any part of the system is expected to increase. Other factors such as operational errors, vessel related impacts, and environmental phenomenon all contribute to offshore pipeline failures. The basic technology for repairing damaged or failed pipelines offshore has been known for several years. This technology continues to be refined and developed to meet more hostile environments and to improve reliability. At the same time, attempts are being made to minimize the time taken to affect a repair, thereby reducing the downtime of the line and the total cost of the repair. Three volumes intended to provide the field engineer a guide for the identification and selection of an appropriate diver-assisted repair method for the determination of the required service support, the location of the appropriate repair hardware, and an estimation of the time and cost associated with the repair.

Buckley, Merry. The Fungal Kingdom: diverse and essential roles in earth's ecosystem. American Society for Microbiology, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.1128/aamcol.2nov.2007.

Full text
Abstract:
There's more to fungi than just mushrooms. Fungi are the cause of scores of life-threatening diseases, they are the earth's best degraders of organic matter, and they are proving to be more useful to science and manufacturing every year. They come in many forms, ranging from single-celled yeasts on the order of ~10 ÌM to mushrooms the size of dinner plates to thin, powdery coatings of mold. Despite the diversity that science has revealed about fungi and their myriad roles in health, ecology, and industry, much about these organisms remains a mystery. The American Academy of Microbiology convened a colloquium November 2–4, 2007, in Tucson, Arizona, to discuss fungi, the current state of research in fungal biology (mycology), and the gaps in our understanding of this important group of organisms. Experts in mycology, medicine, plant pathogens, genetics/genomics, ecology, and other areas developed specific recommendations for advancing fungal research.

Abstract:
In early 2020, Edith Cowan University (ECU) identified the need for a proactive approach to supporting and affirming trans, gender diverse, and non-binary (TGDNB) students, staff, alumni, and the wider community. While there was general support and focus on LGBTIQA+ initiatives broadly at ECU, there were no existing supports to address the unique needs and raise awareness of the experiences of TGDNB people. This paper outlines ECU’s process to develop TGDNB Support Guidelines, including research, forming a working group to drive resource development, consultation from different areas within the university, a launch event, training, and ensuring the document was widely promoted and used after the launch. The paper also identifies the issues TGDNB students are facing, outcomes of the continued work to advocate for trans people at ECU, as well as the challenges we face and goals we continue to work toward.

Abstract:
This report details the findings of an Ontario-wide survey of 1194 school educators which is part of a larger study funded by funded by the Social Sciences Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). The survey was developed in consultation with trans educators, school board officials, and community members and included a mix of qualitative and quantitative questions. The report is structured according to educators’ responses to questions about trans-inclusive policies, self-rated knowledge, and understanding of trans inclusion and gender diversity, training received, use of resources and the barriers to fostering gender diversity in schools. Educators’ recommendations and advice on improving education about trans inclusivity in schools are also reported. Key findings revealed that there continue to be systemic and structural impediments to supporting trans inclusion and gender diversity in schools, in terms of both the failure to enact policy and to provide adequate support, education, and resourcing for educators. Recommendations are outlined which relate to the need for further development of policies that identify the allocation of resources for both professional development and curriculum development as central to the necessary provision of support for trans students and creating gender-affirming schools. The report also stipulates the necessity for sustained accountability measures to be established by governing bodies, such as the Ontario Ministry of Education, for supporting gender diversity and trans inclusion with the explicit objective of supporting school boards fiscally in the provision of professional development and development of resources. Teacher Education faculties also need to be committed to ensuring that teacher candidates are provided with the knowledge and understanding of trans inclusion and what trans affirmative education entails.

Since the summer of 2020, researchers from ten projects pertaining to the Horizon2020 Science with and for Society (SwafS) call have been meeting virtually as the SwafS14 Monitoring and Evaluation ecosystem. Topics of discussion were the trials and tribulations of their regional Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) projects as well as their strategies for monitoring and evaluation. In this paper we make a first attempt at presenting these issues as problems of translation between different kinds of stakeholders. After an exploration of the diversity of stakeholders and the process of translation in regional RRI, we suggest evaluative conversations as a way of improving regional RRI. We intend to develop this idea in the future and that these conversations will facilitate more responsible and engaged monitoring and evaluation and contribute to better R&I policies.

Abstract:
In this multi-component exercise, you have been recruited as community scientists to analyze real-world data collected in Vatu-i-Ra Seascape using non-destructive diver operated video (DOV) methods. These videos were previously collected by the Wildlife Conservation Society in collaboration with local divers in Fiji. Students will quantitatively analyze and use this data to assess the fisheries management efficacy of tabu areas—a traditional Fijian approach to create no-take, Marine Protected Areas—as a method of promoting marine biodiversity and improving overall ecosystem health using metrics such as fish abundance and coral reef complexity. During this exercise you will also learn about the importance and cultural significance of tabu areas in relation to ecosystem health and human livelihoods. You will be directed on how to visualize the results and summarize their conclusions through a written report in the style of a scientific journal article. In the discussion section of your scientific journal article, you are encouraged to critically think about study limitations and discuss future research directions to expand the project.
