Full textThe world's relentless large-scale mining expansion is a major cause for concern, giving rise to moral debates about the desirability or otherwise of such expansion. This thesis problematizes the divergence of moral opinions in rural Peruvian communities in the Cajamarca region, where Conga, an open-pit gold and copper mining project, is to be built. To do so, it sheds light at macro and micro levels on the various political and social logics that have made such a local divergence of opinion possible, pitting one hamlet against another, one family against another, or even two members of the same nuclear family. The analysis is based primarily on a 12-month ethnographic survey in three hamlets, through three field visits in 2016, 2019 and 2021.The investigation shows that the distribution of opinions in favor or against Conga's operation is strongly dependent on the articulation of two policies pursued by the mining company, a logic of social discrimination and a local political micro-field. Firstly, an unequal policy with regard to localities, consolidating an asymmetrical alliance with the closest localities and marginalizing those further away. The company also pursues a policy of selective punishment and gratification employed, with variable geometry in each of the three hamlets, by mining employees in order to secure local support, but also to hinder the progress of leaders critical of the mining project. Secondly, there was the destabilization of the social hierarchy within the Sorochuco district, produced by the arrival of the Conga project, between the inhabitants of low and high altitudes. The latter, historically discriminated against because they were considered poor, uneducated and uncivilized, were the first to benefit from mining policies, becoming the district's new rich. Finally, and this is the focus of my thesis, a political micro-field within which four types of villagers can be distinguished: the marginalized, with little land and few relatives; the dominant, well-off and with larger relatives; the marginalized well-off and, finally, the potentially charismatic poor. This typology sheds light on the distribution of opinions (and their respective justification) about Conga. This thesis concludes with the need to go beyond the analysis of moral opinions and positions as the result of the economic interests or environmental concerns of the inhabitants. To this end, it calls for the future articulation of Axel Honneth's perspective of recognition (and disrespect) and Pierre Bourdieu's field theory. This approach would enable us to better analyze the divergence of moral horizons and opinions as a function of the unequal distribution of opportunities to experience humiliation or to protect oneself from it (or even to exercise it) within a social space. An invitation to take a fresh look at the “moral economy” of our contemporary societies on issues that often divide them, such as large-scale mining
