Canard, Maxime. "Controlled generation of unidirectional irregular sea states in experimental and numerical wave tanks." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Ecole centrale de Nantes, 2024. http://www.theses.fr/2024ECDN0001.
Full textThe objective of this thesis is to improve the wave generation and qualification procedures in the context of ocean engineering studies. The framework is limited to unidirectional irregular sea states generated in experimental and numerical wave tanks. Experiments were carried out using the ECN facilities and numerical studies were performed using the nonlinear potential wave solver HOS-NWT developed by ECN. In the first part of the thesis, the problem of irregular wave propagation in wave tank environments is addressed from theoretical, experimental, and numerical points of view. Paticular attention is paid to the evolution in space of the wave spectrum and statistics. In addition, experimental uncertainties arestudied in detail. The second part of the thesis focuses on developing methods to better control the wave fields at any target position in the domain. First, a procedure focusing on the quality of the wave spectrum is studied. Then, facing the dependence of the wave statistics on the target location, a new procedure is developed and tested to better control the statistical distributions independently of the target location

Full textThe study of the distribution of rational points on algebraic varieties is a classic subject of Diophantine geometry. The program proposed by V. Batyrev and Y. Manin in the 1990s gives a prediction on the order of growth whereas its later version due to E. Peyre conjectures the existence of a global distribution. In this thesis we propose a study of the local distribution of rational points of bounded height on algebraic manifolds. This aims at giving a description finer than the global one by counting the points closest to a fixed point. We set ourselves on the recent framework of the work of D. McKinnon and M. Roth who prefers that the geometry of the variety governs the Diophantine approximation on it and we take up the results of S. Pagelot. The expected order of growth and the existence of an asymptotic measure on some toric surfaces are demonstrated, while we demonstrate a totally different result for another surface on which there is no asymptotic measure and the best generic approximates are obtained on nodal rational curves. These two phenomena are of a radically different nature from the point of view of the Diophantine approximation

Full textThe functional adaptations of various skeletal muscles, were investigated in response to a high-intensity exercise training, i. E. Jumping. The mechanical analysis reveals an increase in resistance and passive stiffness of pennate Extensor Digitorum Longus (EDL) and Rectus Femoris (RF) muscles after training, in addition to a general increase induced by age. This increase in passive mechanical qualities could be linked to an increase in collagen concentration of muscles. .

Full textHydraulic habitat models are frequently used for predicting the ecological impacts of flow management in stream reaches. Their hydraulic component describes microhabitat hydraulics within the reach (e.g. velocity, depth); their biological component describes the "preferences" of aquatic taxa for microhabitat hydraulics. Statistical habitat models involve the modelling of the frequency distributions of hydraulic variables in reaches. Their application requires simple data, but such models are not available for insular tropical streams. We developed hydraulic preference models for 15 diadromous taxa of tropical islands (shrimps and fishes), and statistical hydraulic models for steep streams with large bed particle size. Our models are based on five available biological data sets (~8350 electrofishing units, 52 streams) and original hydraulic measurements (44 streams, 69 site×date) collected in four islands in the Caribbean region (Guadeloupe, Martinique) and the Indian Ocean (Reunion, Mayotte), in collaboration with local partners. Our hydraulic models improve the predictions of observed velocity and depth distributions when compared with previous models developed in continental Europe. Our biological models reflect that hydraulics contribute less to microhabitat selection in tropical islands than elsewhere. Nevertheless, some taxa have significant hydraulic preferences that are comparable among data sets and we illustrate a potential application of our results for guiding low flow management in tropical insular streams
