Full textNowadays, the distribution networks of electricity are the segment of the electrical power systems that has experienced more changes, due in particular to the presence of distributed generation and the technological advances in the areas of instrumentation, automation, measurement, information technology and comunication. This work aims to present the modelling, the control and the operation management of a group of small-scale energy resources connected to the low voltage, which coordinated form a microgrid. The microgrid energy resources are solar photovoltaic sources, wind energy based on double fed induction generator and hydrogen fuel cell, and a storage system with batteries. Two conceptions are developed: a single-phase microgrid and a three-phase microgrid, both operating in connected mode and isolated from the utility. Each energy resource is connected to a point of common coupling through power converters. For each converter was designed a set of control loops. The master-slave strategy was used to control the converters and to microgrid management. In master-slave configuration only the master converter is designed to be the voltage reference and others operate as a current source. For managing the steady state operation of microgrids different operating scenarios were considered, with variation of load and generation levels, as well as changes in tariff flags, for load supply with economy and sources operating at maximum efficiency. The proposed systems operate satisfactorily fulfill the requirements of utility for synchronization and disconnection. The injected currents are below the allowed distortion level. In stand-alone mode, the system voltage remains within the appropriate level of amplitude and frequency.

Full textDistributed Generation systems based on renewable energy sources, such as wind or solar are mostly intermittent sources, due to their dependency on the weather, whereas those based on other primary energy sources are non-intermittent. All of them are specially designed to be integrated into distribution systems, in order to improve the power demand of consumers. In the last few decades of the twentieth century, several different factors have played a key role in increasing interest in systems. Distributed Generation (DG) is gaining more and more attention worldwide as an alternative to large-scale central generating stations. The aim of this research project is to investigate the contribution of distributed generation in fault current level in a power distribution system. The simulation results indicate that DG can have a positive or negative impact, on the fault current level in distribution network systems. The DG location and size affect the fault level. The second aim of this research was to suggest a model-based method for design, and implementation of a protection scheme for power distribution systems, by establish algorithms in a hardware environment. The overcurrent relay was chosen for the model development because it is considered a simple and popular protection scheme, and it is a common scheme in relaying applications. The proposed relay model was tested for fault conditions applied on a simple power system in different scenarios. The overcurrent relay model was implemented in MATLAB/Simulink, by using MATLAB programming languages and the SimPowerSystem (SPS) Tool. MATLAB/SIMULINK software is applicable to the modelling of generation, transmission, distribution and industrial grids, and the analysis of the interactions of these grids. This software provides a library of standard electrical components or models such as transformers, machines, and transmission lines. Therefore, the modelling and simulations are executed using MATLAB/Simulink version 2014b

The current masterâs dissertation treats the experimental and theoretical development of a new model of Tesla turbine, also known as disk turbine, in which the research focus was to study this propulsion device viewing its application in distributed energy generation systems from biomass renewable resources. A turbineâs prototype was developed, in laboratory scale, to determine the design parameters through the theoretical and experimental studies in order to interpret the phenomena present in the internal processes of this kind of flux machine. The research was directed toward the effect analysis of the gap between disks on the torque and the power, as a function of the flowâs fluidynamic boundary layer, correlating the flow velocity regimes with the working fluid properties. A methodology for isentropic and exergetic efficiency calculation is taken from experimental data and theoretical analyses through simulation (supported by the software ANSYS-CFX), which determines the pressure distribution profile inside the expansion chamber, characterizing flow lines and pressure gradients. Complementarily, a modal analysis of turbineâs vibration signals is performed, studying the dynamic behavior of the structure with the purposes of detecting the natural frequencies and investigating the influence of the diskâs gap on the vibration level of this device. This study points out the robustness and the operational versatility of this kind of turbine by the fact of it allows a wide rotation range and by its easy adaptation to commercial generators, suggesting its application into generation and co-generation systems for the rural area as well as for the industry.

Full textFrom the electric power generation perspective, the last three decades have been characterized by sustained growth in the amount of Distributed Power Generation (DPG) systems integrated into the electric grid. This trend is anticipated to continue, especially in light of the widespread acceptance of the many benefits envisaged in the increase of renewable-based power generation. The potential for grid-integrated DPG systems to significantly contribute to electric power supply reliability has consistently attracted extensive research in recent times, although concerns continue to be raised over their adverse impact on the normal grid operation at high penetration levels. These concerns largely stem from the limited controllability of most DPG systems, which tend to exhibit large output impedance variation, and non-deterministic power output characteristics. There has therefore also been a growing need to develop effective control strategies that can enhance the overall impact of the DPG systems on the grid operation, thus improving their synergistic properties, and probably also enabling an even higher penetration level into the utility grid. In line with this identified need, this thesis discusses the modeling and controller design for an inverter-based DPG system with the capability to effectively operate both in grid-connected and autonomous (i.e. independent of the utility grid) operational modes. The dual-mode operation of the DPG is made possible by incorporating into the inverter interface control scheme the means to ensure seamless transition of the DPG between the grid-connected and autonomous modes of operation. The intention is to have a grid-integrated inverter-based DPG system whose operation approximates that of an online Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) system, in that it is able to sustain power supply to the local load in the absence of the grid supply, which would be desirable for critical loads, for which the level of power supply reliability guaranteed by the grid often falls short of the requirements. The work developed in this thesis considers three of the aspects associated with grid-integrated DPG systems that are equipped with autonomous-mode operation capability.

Full textThe main approach of this thesis is the study of active anti-islanding techniques with positive feedback in a Distributed Generation (DG) system composed by a Voltage Source Inverter (VSI) and local loads. In literature two groups of techniques are used as anti-island protection: the active and the passive techniques. The active islanding detection methods are preferably used because of the smaller non-detection zones compared to passive techniques, however they inject continuous disturbances in the DG system, reducing the power quality provided by the VSI. In this context, as the scope of this dissertation, it is firstly carried out the study of control structures employed in grid-tied distribution system, to evaluate the operation of the voltage control loops, and the active-and reactive power managements. Additionally, we discuss active islanding detection techniques in frequency and voltage with positive feedback and constant gain, based on the classical, with the objective of investigating their performance in relation to the detection time and the injection of disturbances in the DG system. From this analysis, antiislanding techniques are developed to guarantee efficiency similar to the traditional methods in cases of small-power flow through the grid and minimize disturbances. These techniques are based on the calculation of the positive feedback variable gain inversely proportional to the deviation of active or reactive power delivered or absorbed from the grid. To validate this proposal, the results are obtained through computational simulations and experimental analysis, as well.

Full textThis thesis addresses general aspects concerning the application of DC-DC converters applied to a grid connected Fuel Cell system. It is discussed in this thesis the averaged and small signals space state modeling of the Boost and Interleaved Boost with Voltage Multiplier (IBVM) converter, it is also mentioned the control architectures in voltage mode, average current mode and peak current mode. The voltage and average current mode control architectures are simulated and implemented in hardware in order to be compared. Due to the fact that Fuel Cells present low terminal voltage and high current, it is needed to use high gain DC-DC converters with the aim connect the system to the grid. This thesis also presents an approach in the analysis of DC-DC converter static voltage gain considering the effect of the parasitic resistances and the load connected to the converter terminals. As a result of the gain analysis, it is presented a set of equation, from which is possible to determine the maximum value of the parasitic resistances for the switch, inductor and capacitor of the voltage multiplier. It is also calculated the maximum value of load connected to the Boost and Interleaved Boost with Voltage Multiplier converters with the aim to present the designed voltage gain. Additionally, by the maximum load value calculated it is possible to determine the maximum power that the converter will be capable to process, considering a specific point of operation. Finally, the designed DC-DC converter is implemented with the aim to validate the theoretical and simulation results.

The high cost of large central generation, the long distance power transmission lines and the new governmental regulations make the distributed generation and the search for other energy sources an attractive solution. This work presents a methodology to analyze the technical and economic feasibility of distribute generation deployment using the concept of microgrids in Universities. The study aims to consider the possibility of using natural and alternative resources like Ethanol, biomass and PV to minimize the costs related to the purchase and usage of electricity. The modeling is developed in a computing environment using the software Homer that assists in the analysis, bringing the current value of the costs of implementation, operation and maintenance. With the data from the analyses it will be possible to present some alternative scenarios of improvement with reduction of costs and increase of reliability. For this study case, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (Federal University of Santa Maria), in south Brazil, is analyzed. It was possible to bring solutions that reduced the energy purchased from de grid, through available renewable sources in the own University. We could also reduce the contracted demand. The methodology developed can be applied to any other Universities, analyzing the available sources in the campus, to bring economy, reliability and reduction of greenhouse gases.

Full textThis thesis deals with the islanding detection and its impact on distribution networks when distributed generation systems are driven by DC-AC converters. Two groups of techniques are found in the literature. The passive techniques in which adjusting the variation limits of protective relays identify the islanding condition, and the active techniques that insert a positive feedback signal in order to make the system unstable when the contingency is on progress. The active techniques present a reduced detection time and simple hardware implementation. They are preferably used in despite of the injection of disturbances in the control system. In this thesis two ways to reduce injection of disturbances and detection time are proposed. In a first approach is shown an optimal design for the synchronization algorithm PLL (Phase-Locked Loop) which allows to reduce the positive feedback gain in frequency techniques in order to decrease the injection of disturbances. In a second approach a fuzzy methodology is used to ensure the islanding detection with the aforementioned requirements. Simulation analysis and experimental results are presented to validate the proposed approach

Full textRelevance of the topic. Given the policy set out in Ukraine's electricity sector development strategy, namely integration into ENTSO-E, a number of issues arise that need to be addressed by the time of integration. One such issue is to increase the reliability of electrical networks, which can be partially solved via the optimal sectionalizing of overhead distribution networks 6 - 20 kV in terms of Smart Grid. The master's dissertation presents a way of determining the optimal sectionalizing of 6 - 20 kV distribution networks, using an improved calculation method based on the "greedy" algorithm, presents an analysis of the commercialization of the proposed method and analyzes the socio-economic benefits of its implementation. The purpose of the work: analysis of the optimal sectionalizing of overhead distribution networks 6 - 20 kV in terms of Smart Grid technologies. To achieve this goal, the following issues were considered and resolved: • the analysis of features and ways to increase the reliability of functioning of distribution networks with a voltage of 6 - 20 kV in Ukraine and the world was carried out; • the prospects of introduction of Smart Grid technologies in order to increase the reliability of distribution networks were considered; • the method of optimal sectionalizing of 6 - 20 kV distribution networks was improved; • a proposal of practical realization (commercialization) of the developed technique and prospects of its further development was made. The object of the study is the processes of functioning of overhead distribution networks with a voltage of 6 - 20 kV in the conditions of application of Smart Grid technologies. The subject of the study is the features of the influence of Smart Grid technologies on the reliability of electricity supply to consumers. Research methods. To solve the set tasks, the methods of optimal sectioning of overhead distribution networks were applied, taking into account the standardization of reliability indicators. The “greedy algorithm” was used as a basis for calculation of the optimal partitioning of distribution networks. The main scientific results of the work include: • the technique of optimal sectioning of overhead distribution networks was further developed, which made it possible to solve the problem in the conditions of widespread use of distributed generation means and coordination of the operation of individual switching-protective devices, which makes it possible to increase the reliability of the integrated power supply systems, which are formed in this case; • for the first time, an analysis was made of the possibility and feasibility of introducing SOP technology in distribution networks in terms of increasing the reliability of their operation, it makes it possible to use more widely and efficiently distributed generation; • improved control structure of distribution network based on OMS, which, along with increasing the reliability of power supply, provides an opportunity to simultaneously reduce losses of electrical energy. The practical significance of the results obtained is: • development of software for solving the problem of optimal sectionalizing of distribution networks with integrated sources of distributed generation and, if possible, using a wide range of switching protection devices; • using the so-called "greedy" algorithm, without losing the effectiveness of the result obtained, to reduce several times the time for solving the problem of optimal partitioning of distribution networks.

The diffusion of distributed generation and microgrids, as well as the growing expansion of renewable energy, like wind power, bring challenges and opportunities related to the operation and control of electrical power systems. In systems exposed to islanded operation, the black start capability is fundamental to restore the energy supply after the occurrence of a blackout. The black start is usually a difficult operational event, since significant power unbalances may occur in the system. The present work proposes operational and control strategies that make possible the black start of wind-diesel microgrids with high penetration level of wind generation, without the adoption of energy storage systems. The proposed control approach is based on two supplementary control loops for a fully rated converter wind turbine, which enable the wind unit to contribute to the frequency regulation during the black start of a stand-alone system. Both the proposed controllers employ the system frequency error as input signal and act only when the system loads are energized. One of the supplementary controllers seeks to extract kinetic energy from the wind turbine, by modifying the speed reference of the wind turbine in the typical control loop of the rotor-side converter. The second supplementary controller is designed to temporarily extract electrical energy from the DC-link capacitor, by acting in the reference of the DC-link voltage in the typical control loop of the grid-side converter. The energy extracted from the wind turbine and DC-link capacitor is injected into the grid to mitigate the power unbalance caused by the load energization. Thus, the proposed control strategies prevent excessive frequency drops during the load energization of low inertia stand-alone systems in restoration procedures. The design of the proposed controllers was performed by a genetic algorithm optimization technique. The performance of the system is compared in two different operation modes, diesel generator operating in Vf control mode and wind generation unit operating in Vf control mode. Results obtained by nonlinear time domain simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control approach.

Full textThe connection of wind generation to distribution systems can cause power quality problems such as voltage sags and voltage fluctuations. The wind generation can also detrimentally affect the operational and control strategies employed in the distribution systems. On the other hand, the use of suitable control strategies may allow wind generation to mitigate power quality problems related to voltage regulation and to improve the reliability of distribution systems. In this context, this work proposes strategies for coordinated voltage control in distribution systems with wind generation. The proposed control strategies aim at enabling wind generation to contribute to coordinated voltage regulation in the distribution system. The proposed coordinated control with the typical operations of On Load Tap Changer (OLTC) transformers and switched capacitor bank, allows the wind power attenuates voltage variations and voltage fluctuations caused by normal changes in system load and wind speed. The focus of this work is the voltage regulation at the medium voltage bus in the substation, considering the connection of wind generation at this point the system. Control strategies involving the prediction of wind speed are also proposed to improve the performance of the voltage control system, and can be implemented by means of a supplementary control loop add to wind generation unit. The evaluations and validations were based on a distribution system with typical topology and considering actual data for the transmission line and OLTC transformer, as well as real data of wind speed and load curve. The study also evaluates the impact caused by the connection of wind generation, for different penetration levels of generation and different wind power classes, on the voltage magnitude of a distribution system. The obtained results have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed strategies in regulating the system voltage and reducing the number of tap changes.

Abstract: This work consists in proposing a methodology based on Fuzzy Logic to obtain an index, which classifies the buses more suitable to install a distributed generator in an electric power distribution system. Themethodologywas developed taking into consideration the difficulty tomaintain a suitable voltage profile in distribution systems, so the methodology results in large, index values for the buses in which the installation of generators results in a more suitable voltage profile. Another aspect included in the methodology is the minimization of the real power losses. Applying a set of fuzzy rules, the index is calculated by setting membership values to the bus 'voltage' and 'load real power'. The advantages of this methodology are that the classification of the variables into fuzzy sets, which allow the linguistic translation of the system operator knowledge and so his experience of operating the system can be employed in the process of allocating distributed generators in the system and when compared to traditional techniques of analysis, does not need of consecutive runs of power flows, it is necessary only to obtain the state operating of the network through only one power flow in base case.

Full textThis dissertation presents a project of a integrated system with distinct energy generating modules using a wind generator, photovoltaic generator, fuel cells stack (FCs) and an accumulator of energy formed by a bank of batteries. This system was implemented in the Center of Studies in Energy and Environment-CEEMA-UFSM. The alternative sources of energy were connected in such a way as to inject current to a common DC bus avoiding so current circulation among sources due to individual voltage differences. The bus voltage is controlled by modulation of a secondary load in parallel with the main load. Along all tests, it was used the algorithm "Hill Climbing Control" (HCC) to maximize the generated power in the wind generator and in the photovoltaic generator. The FC operating principles are shown in more details with respect to their static and dynamic characteristics. In this MSc dissertation a FC simulator was used connected to real electric loads. A DC-DC Boost-type converter connects each primary source to the DC bus, and a Buck-Boost DC-DC converter with an integrated to control the charge and discharge states of the storage system (bank of batteries). Finally, numerical results were presented for all electric simulations so completing the hybrid system. After discussion of these results, a practical implementation was made to verify the numerical simulations with variable loads fed by the maximized generated powers from the sources.

Full textThe insertion and expansion of distributed generation bring about intrinsic challenges, especially concerning to the reliability and operation of the electric power system, which results in a paradigm shift imposed on power distribution systems. Among the challenges and opportunities associated to distributed generation, the islanded operation of distribution systems and microgrids has grown considerably. In this context, this paper proposes operational and control strategies to properly allow the operation of a wind generation system. The proposed control is based on a supplementary control loop, added to the speed control loop of the wind turbine. The proposed control loop consists of a paradigm shift to control the DC-link voltage, since in traditional systems the DC-link voltage is usually controlled only by the BESS. The proposed supplementary control loop reduces the number and duration of the BESS actuations. Furthermore, the proposed strategy can contribute to enhance the reliability and the life cycle of the energy storage device. This work also proposes a new methodology for minimum sizing of battery energy storage systems to allow the islanded operation of wind power systems. The methodology considers a maximum load step to be supplied by the system. Finally, the proposed control and operational strategies with the BESS are evaluated and validated throughout mathematical analysis and simulation in the time domain using the proposed system. The proposed control strategy was effective in regulating the DC-link voltage, allowing the islanded operation of a wind power system based on synchronous generator with full-size power converters.

Full textThe insertion of alternative sources in the power system enables the optimization of natural resources available for electrical generation. The connection of these sources to the grid has to be made in order to avoid indices of power quality greater than the limits established by national and international standards. In this context, a Distributed Generation (DG) systems connected to the grid via voltage/power control use a proportional+resonant (P+R) controller to produce not only the fundamental frequency but also to reduce the voltage distortion when nonlinear loads are connected to the DG terminals. Additionally, this type of solution shows satisfactory results for linear, balanced, unbalanced and direct connection of induction machine as well. However, for parallel RLC load with frequency of resonance equals to the fundamental frequency of the grid, the DG system operation becomes unstable with high levels of harmonic distortions and an oscillatory behavior. In this context, we propose the replacement of the PR controller for the fundamental frequency by a fractional order controller PIλ designed via a heuristic optimization algorithm. To prove the feasibility of the proposed approach a set of simulations are presented, however, the experimental prototype shown the sensitivity of the controller for different loads and for the controller discretization parameters suggesting the need for more analysis during the design procedures of the PIλ controller to achieve the expected robustness.

In other words, the control program does not allow only for anarrow spectrum of different working regimes to be realized, as it was the casepreviously with the solutions proposed in the literature, but can result in a safeproduction of arbitrary meaningful phase currents and voltages profiles. It wasdemonstrated that the proposed solution satisfies the most stringent of the GridCodes. Furthermore, advanced functionalities not addressed in the Grid Codeswere also analysed and the influence of those functionalities’ application onthe process of the energy production during the grid faults was evaluated inthe dissertation. Full textThis Ph.D. dissertation aims the study and development of topologies and control techniques to integrate various alternative sources such as solar and wind, coupled to a direct current (DC) common bus and connect them to the distribution grid. Storage devices such as battery banks and ultracapacitors will form a hybrid storage structure that is responsible for the power supplying in periods in which the sources are unable (times of the day in which the light incidence is low or when the wind amount is scarce). Power management algorithms will be implemented so the alternative sources and storage devices exchange energy, in order to make smoother the power injection profile in the grid, eliminating the fluctuations that are created naturally by alternative sources. With a smooth power profile, energy management systems based on alternative sources may become more reliable and predictable, improving planning capacity in a scenario in which the renewable energy sources have a high penetration in the energy matrix. To obtain such a result, two power management methodologies are executed; the first one is based on ultracapacitors and aims to deliver constant power to the distribution network, even when the power production is zero. However, this technique allows constant power just for a few minutes, once the ultracapacitor capacity is limited. The second strategy is based on the bank of batteries combined with ultracapacitors, forming the hybrid storage system. In this management structure, the storage devices communicate with each other in order to perform a power sharing, resulting in a filtrated power profile delivered to the distribution network. In this strategy, the batteries are responsible to providing average power while ultracapacitors are in-charge of the transient power, sparing the batteries from supplying power peaks. In a second moment, two other load sharing methodologies are proposed for hybrid systems, but are based on decentralized techniques, i.e. storage devices do not communicate with each other to make the power sharing. Experimental and simulated results will prove the effectiveness of the control strategies and management methodologies.

Full textThe utilization of multilevel converters has been an important alternative for medium voltage applications with high power and power quality demand, thanks to the high power levels achievable for this kind of structure. Recently, this converter topology was proposed as a new possibility in renewable energy source applications, mainly in system delivering power to the grid, where different renewable energy resources may be used. Based on the characteristics of multilevel converters, and their potential applicability in distributed generation systems, this study aims to build a multilevel system that could be powered by renewable energy sources as primary sources and then connect them to a distribution grid. However, considering the energy produced by alternative sources can vary, it is analyzed the integration of a storage energy system in this multilevel topology. Taking into account this ends, the main concern of this study is related to the development of a control strategy to maximize the active power transferred to the grid. The multilevel topology employed in this study has two H-bridge inverter modules connected in series forming a cascaded configuration. Therefore, it is possible that at least one of these inverters, operating with a low frequency of modulation, process the majority of power with lower amount of losses. On this way, two control strategies for power transfer are analyzed. The advantages and disadvantages of each method are presented, and the most appropriated strategy is used in the operation of the multilevel converter system. In addition, it has been presented the design criteria for each controller and finally the validation of the proposed approach is done by mains of simulations and experimental results which show the ability of the converter to transfer constant active power to the grid and keep the grid current in phase with the grid voltage.

Full textThe present work aims to develop a system of charging and discharging lead-acid batteries for distributed generation connected to a set of photovoltaic panels, and used in grid connected applications. The set of panels operates to maximize the energy produced by means of an MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) algorithm and the power grid absorbs the extra power produced by the panels. For charging and discharging the battery pack and to prevent overload and deep discharge, a methodology for estimating the state of charge is implemented in order to obtain an efficient control technique (maximizing battery life), and more efficient use of the stored energy. To manage the charging and discharging of the battery bank a bidirectional topology (Boost-Buck) with fuzzy P+I controller for stabilization of current or voltage is used. To regards the PV control technique, a classical PI controller is employed to regulate the PV terminal voltage, and the maximum power point is determined by a perturb and observe (P&O) algorithm. To validate the controllers and the theoretical models developed is built a prototype system, and analyzed the behavior of the batteries charger and photovoltaic panel under extreme environmental conditions such as abrupt decrease of solar irradiation, unexpected panels disconnection and changes of the maximum power point of the panels.

This work presents aspects related to DC microgrids, an alternative way of using renewable energy sources in a decentralized fashion. Whereas the maintenance of the microgrid main bus voltage, in which the sources and loads are connected, is one of the most important issues for the satisfactory operation of these systems, a novel methodology for regulating DC bus voltage integrating voltage droop control and sliding mode control techniques is proposed. A grid-connected 10 kW DC microgrid containing photovoltaic arrays and a battery bank, sized to meet a portion of electronic and lighting loads of the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology - Campus Juiz de Fora, is modeled and simulated in real time using the concept of CHIL simulation. Experimental results using external controllers as hardware under test are used to analyze system behavior under different conditions and to validate the proposed methodology. Furthermore, a study regarding voltage stability analysis techniques applied to DC systems is presented. Finally, a methodology based on synthesis of reactive elements using static converters for active stabilization of simplified CC systems, containing one source and one constant power load, is presented.

Nowadays, one of the main challenges in the world is the generation of electricity in a sustainable and renewable way, aiming to gradually reduce the generation based on fuels that cause a high environmental impact such as coal, oil, and nuclear energy. The emission and accumulation of CO2 in the atmosphere and the consequent global warming has convinced public opinion that the use of low environmental impact technologies should play a prominent role in energy production. Distributed generation using renewable sources presents itself as a worldwide trend to meet part of the demand for electricity. In this way, this work proposes a multicriteria evaluation of the main sources of energy used in the Brazilian electrical system, from the economic, technical and socio-environmental point of view. In this sense, it is also an evaluation of the impacts of the insertion of the distributed generation into the Brazilian electricity distribution network.

Considering the new challenges imposed in the energetic scenario around the world, this PhD thesis implements and analyzes a micro-grid of Distributed Generation (DG) plant with accumulation and capability of operation connected or islanded from the electric power distribution grid. The system will supply power to the utility grid and local loads through six single-phase inverters, constituting a three-phase system, among which three are with capability to operate in islanded and connected mode, and the other three single-phase inverters with current source characteristic that can inject active or reactive power in a controlled manner at the point of common coupling (PCC). Through the accumulation system with lead-acid batteries technology, it is also possible that the system minimizes the utility grid consumption, though without solar energy. Given that most of the available inverters for DG are designed only to provide active power or to operate with a fixed power factor, this work, in the meantime, implements the dynamic control of the supplied active and reactive power (P and Q) in micro-grid, acting as a voltage compensator at the PCC to improve the quality of electric power. The micro-grid is managed by software designed to control and communicate with all essential devices in DG, including control of charge and discharge of the accumulation system, control of the whole system connection contactors, and the firmware control of grid connected inverters, which allow a wide control over the available energy and provide a significant academic studying platform. In addition, the energy flow between the DG and the utility grid is monitored through a power quality monitoring device, which is capable to send daily reports by email. In this way, a program was developed to store and recover all the relevant data in a database for the long-term analysis, compiling the results for easy interpretation. A literature review is presented for the world energy scenario, with more focus in Brazil, besides the micro-grid configurations with DG most used in the sector currently. This work also shows the general diagram of the micro-grid with DG describing the equipment and dimensioning the solar energy sources. Finally, it demonstrates and discusses experimental results and code structures.

Full textThis Thesis presents contributions for the planning of the electrical system of São Paulo State Brazil, emphasizing benefits obtained with a better integration of renewables (mainly solar photovoltaics, wind energy, from municipal solid waste and sugarcane vinasse) aiming energy security and independence, loss reduction and environmental benefits. For this, the concept of VPP Virtual Power Plant is introduced, in which a better and broader use of energetic resources, geographically dispersed, including distributed microgeneration, autoproduction, cogeneration, and even nonrenewable sources, is facilitated. Those disperse energy resources, in general located near the consumer, are grouped and jointly managed, in order of to satisfy the demand requirements, using Smart Grid and Information and Telecommunication Technologies, and making the VPP to act, for the transmission or distribution system point of view, as a conventional large electrical power plant. An analysis and forecasts of the operation of the Brazilian Southeast/Center West (SE/CO) subsystem, with special focus on São Paulo State electrical system, and its interactions with the Brazilian Interconnected Electrical System (SIN), is presented.

Full textIn the search for new options for the establishment of the energy matrix of Brazil, the Grid-Connected Photovoltaic Systems (SFVCR) are configured as an alternative to urban centers, because they allow the power generation at distributed mode, that is, generate energy at the place where it will be consumed and inject the surplus energy into the network. Faced with the prospect of installing Grid-Connected Photovoltaic System, the objective of this research is to characterize this type of photovoltaic system and also, analyze the results in terms of productivity parameters, such as Yield, Performance Ratio and Capacity Factor of six grid-connected systems that are installed in Curitiba. The radiation data used to calcute those parameters has been acquired from Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia (INMET). This paper highlight that the Parana state has 810 SFVCR (until April 2017) in operation, which stands for 5MW and Curitiba has 170 SFVCR, 865 kW in operation, and 80% of them are installed in residences. In addition, 98% of those systems use multicrystalline modules, 75% use single phase inverters and 95% of these use inverters transformerless, because the losses in the conversion process are reduced and the equipments are more compact and have more technology than the inverters with transformer. So, the main trend of photovoltaic energy market is to use transformerless inverters. The results obtained shows that the inverters’choice and the installation mode of the photovoltaic modules are important factors to maximize the photovoltaic system’s performance. In the end, the results demonstrates that the SFVCR contribute to distributed power generation and should be use in the elaboration of public policies with the purpose of encouraging projects and research in the photovoltaic energy’s area, aiming the dissemination of this renewable source of energy in Brazil.

This paper deals with the study of energy converter topology based on the use of impedance network configuration called Y-source, with the objective of being applied in photovoltaic energy cogeneration systems in low voltage grids. In photovoltaic energy generation systems, it is usually necessary to have a voltage boost stage and an inverter stage, both controlled to produce voltage and / or sine current with the same frequency, amplitude and phase of the power grid. In this sense, this work proposes the application of the Y-source converter between the photovoltaic generation and the connection with the electric grid, so that the conversion actions related to elevation (DC-DC) and inversion (DC-AC) in a way integrated by a single structure, contributing to the possibility of improvement in the overall yield due to the minimization of cascade conversion stages. Initially a bibliographical survey was performed relating the main inverter topologies using impedance networks with coupled inductors considering the operational aspects, impedance arrangement and ideal static gain between the input voltage and the maximum output obtained. ext, the study of the DC-DC converter operation using the Y-type impedance network, definition of the equations governing the time behavior of the voltages and currents in the capacitors and inductors, is presented. It is also done the comparative evaluation of the static voltage gain obtained and the stresses in the semiconductors according to the available control and design control variables. Study of the operation of the DC-AC converter employing type Y impedance network, considering the extension of the expressions found for the operation as DC-DC converter. Finally, computational simulations were developed in the PSIM environment, considering the use of circuits and modulation strategies related to Y-source converter applications, in DC-DC operation and DC-AC operation for integration into power cogeneration systems, to demonstrate advantages and disadvantages of using this topology.

Full textThe increased demand for energy, the possibility of reducing the supply of conventional fuels and growing concerns about the preservation of the environment have led to several researches and development of alternative energy sources which are clean, renewable and with minor environmental impact. Among the various alternative energy sources, PV solar has been considered an excellent option as it is free, abundant, clean and distributed through all places. Solar energy incident on Earth\'s surface is estimated at about ten thousand times the total energy consumed in the world. Even with all the advantages offered by the generation of energy through the use of photovoltaic panels, the initial cost of deployment is high and the efficiency of energy conversion is currently still low. Thus, it is essential to use techniques to extract the maximum power from these panels to increase the system operation efficiency. This work aims to present studies of a complete photovoltaic solar system, connected to low voltage power grid including the solar panel, a step-up voltage converter, its corresponding Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) control, the voltage inverter with its control, the phase locked loop, and by means of an inductive coupling, the connection of the whole system to the grid. For modeling and simulations of the solar photovoltaic system, it was used the Alternative Transients Program - ATP. Initially it is presented simulation results with parts that comprises the PV array, and only at the end, it is performed a case study with the complete PV system developed in this work.
