Abstract:
Large-scale parallel and distributed computing systems are becoming more popular as a result of falling hardware prices and improvements in computer networking technologies. Improved performance and resource sharing are potential benefits of distributed computing systems. We have provided a summary of distributed computing in this essay. The differences between parallel and distributed computing, terms related to distributed computing, task distribution in distributed computing, performance metrics in distributed computing systems, parallel distributed algorithm models, benefits of distributed computing, and distributed computing's application domain were all covered in this paper.

Abstract:
Overview. In this edition of the column, we have a very useful and interesting piece from Michel Raynal (IRISA Rennes & Hong Kong Polytechnic), whose goal is to provide a systematic view of the computability results in distributed computing which should be well-understood by any Masters-level student with an interest in our area. Michel's motivation for the column is that, given the intense proliferation of computational models, tasks, and correctness and progress conditions in recent years, for instance, in the context of Blockchain technology, it may be hard for newcomers to the field to understand the boundary between what is essentially possible and what is impossible in a distributed system.

Abstract:
This has been a very difficult year from several points of view, so it is great to see that our community has stayed resilient in spite of these challenges. In particular, the committees and organizers of our community's meetings have braved the manifold issues caused by the pandemic, and managed to put on virtual events of the highest quality. Following custom, in this column, we will be covering the rst virtual version of PODC, while the next column should contain highlights from (virtual) DISC. In addition, we will be covering the Summer School on the Practice and Theory of Distributed Computing (SPTDC 2020), as well as its associated conference Hydra 2020, aimed at fostering interactions between academia and industry. That being said, I would like to brie y overview this year's awards.

Abstract:
Overview. In this edition of the column, we have an exciting contribution from Shir Cohen, Idit Keidar, and Oded Naor (Technion), who provide an in-depth perspective on communication-efficient Byzantine Agreement. With the huge popularity of blockchains, the classic area of Byzantine Agreement has seen a surge of interest, and, given the large-scale and widely-distributed deployments of such mechanisms, communication efficiency is a chief concern. This column provides a gentle introduction to the area, by rst the early work in the 80s. This provides the necessary context for the recent exciting work on communication reduction, from the King & Saia algorithm to Algorand. One very useful feature in this column's contribution is the fact that it provides a uni ed view of these results, along with the mathematical background to understand and di erentiate the underlying results. Many thanks to Shir, Idit and Oded for their contribution!
