Abstract:
AbstractBusinesses across the globe faces challenges to ensure stability, growth and sustainability. Companies have to deal with changes in economic, social, cultural, political and technological environment. Companies failing to do may face financial distress causing default in payment of contractual obligations and erosion of shareholders wealth. In a business scenario where the stakeholders are many viz. shareholders, lenders, employees, government and society at large, protection of the interests of the stakeholders assume prime importance. Company’s management are expected to identify signals that indicate distress and take remedial measures. This paper attempts to identify distress signals in textile sector in India. Textile sector is one of the largest sector in India. However one third of companies in this sector have reported losses for the previous year. This study aims to examine the factors that can differentiate a distressed company from a non- distressed company so that the factors signifying distress can be studied. Listed companies in textile sector incurring continuous losses for three years were selected for the study. Financial ratios were used as variables. Logistic regression was applied to identify the most important factors indicating distress. It was observed that ratios measuring profitability and efficiency were significant in predicting distress. Key words:  Financial distress, distress signals, textile sector, continuous losses, financial ratios

Abstract:
Dam safety has drawn increasing attention from the public. To ensure dam safety, it is essential to diagnose any dam distresses and their causes properly. The main objective of this paper is to develop a robust probability-based tool using Bayesian networks for the diagnosis of embankment dam distresses at the global level based on past dam distress data. A database of 993 distressed in-service embankment dams in China has been compiled, including general information on the dams, distresses, and causes. Based on the database, general characteristics of embankment dam distresses are studied using Bayesian networks, which can tackle not only the multiplicity of dam distresses and causes, but also the complex interrelations among them. Common patterns and causes of distresses are identified. The interrelations among the dam distresses and their causes are quantified using conditional probabilities determined based on the historical frequencies from the dam distress database. A sensitivity analysis is also conducted to identify and rank the most important factors that cause the distresses. With the prior information of common characteristics extracted from the database, Bayesian networks are further used to diagnose a specific distressed dam at the local level by combining global-level performance records and project-specific evidence in a systematic structure, which is presented in a companion paper.

Abstract:
Riyadh City established and implemented a Pavement Maintenance Management System (PMMS) through the General Directorate of Maintenance and operation. The system was created to address the difficulties that come with maintaining and reserving the pavement network. To evaluate pavement conditions, Riyadh (PMMS) uses visual checks, structural capacity roughness, and skid resistance. An Urban Distress Index (UDI) is calculated during the visual assessment process. Distressed pavement types, severity, and quantity are taken into account when calculating UDI values. As a result, the procedure gathers extensive data on the pavement’s condition. However, the procedure is time-consuming and very costly. The Automatic Road Analyzer car provides data on road roughness in accordance with the International Roughness Index (IRI). The IRI data are often generated quite quickly and at a cheap cost as compared to the distress survey. This study’s aim is to examine whether a sample of Riyadh city pavement sections can be connected to the IRI depending on the distress type. The research develops statistical models that correlate IRI values with several distress-types associated with roadway classes. Correlating the International Roughness Index values to distress type will eliminate the necessity to implement the manual inspection at a network- level. This saves money and time for PMMS employees when preparing annual maintenance requirements and setting priorities. The finding of the study, of the relationship between the pavement distresses and the International Roughness Index showed a statistically significant relationship between pavement roughness and some ride-quality distresses, like depression and patching, as well as some non-ride quality distresses like potholes and rutting. In addition, for both main and secondary streets, an analysis of variance shows the existence of a correlation between the two variables.

Abstract:
Distresses, such as cracks, directly reflect the structural integrity of subway tunnels. Therefore, the detection of subway tunnel distress is an essential task in tunnel structure maintenance. This paper presents the performance improvement of deep learning-based distress detection to support the maintenance of subway tunnels through a new data augmentation method, selective image cropping and patching (SICAP). Specifically, we generate effective data for training the distress detection model by focusing on the distressed regions via SICAP. After the data augmentation, we train a distress detection model using the expanded training data. The new image generated based on SICAP does not change the pixel values of the original image. Thus, there is little loss of information, and the generated images are effective in constructing a robust model for various subway tunnel lines. We conducted experiments with some comparative methods. The experimental results show that the detection performance can be improved by our data augmentation.

Abstract:
Web attacks pose a prime concern for cybersecurity, and whilst attackers are leveraging modern technologies to launch unpredictable attacks with serious consequences, web attack detectors are still restricted to the classical misuse and anomaly detection methods. As a result, web attack detectors have limited resilience to novel attacks or produce impractical amounts of daily false alerts. Advances in intrusion detection techniques have so far only partly alleviated the problem as they are still tied to existing methods. This thesis proposes Distress Detection (DD), a detection method providing novel web attack resilience while suppressing false alerts. It is partly inspired by the workings of the human immune system, that is capable to respond against previously unseen infections. The premise is that within the scope of an attack objective (the attack's end result), attack HTTP requests are associated with features that are necessary to reach that objective, rendering them suspicious. Their eventual execution must generate system events that are associated with the successful attainment of their objective, called the attack symptoms. Suspicious requests and attack symptoms are modeled on the generic signs of ongoing infections that enable the immune system to respond to novel infections, however they are not exclusive to attacks. The suppression of false alerts is left to an alert correlation process based on the premise that attack requests can be distinguished from the rest through a link that connects their features with their consequent attack symptoms. The provision of novel attack resilience and false alert suppression is demonstrated through three prototype distress detectors, identifying DD as promising for effective web attack detection, despite some concerns about the level of diffculty of their implementation process.

Kihn, John Patrick. "Distress and low-grade securities : issues in distress and illiquidity." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 1996. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/2410/.

Full text
Abstract:
Given the economic importance of distressed firms, this thesis was motivated by an apparent lack of financial economic research examining distressed firms and their securities. The thesis principally focuses on the following two areas: (1) the costs of Chapter 11, and (2) the financial performance of low-grade bonds (i.e., "risky debt"). In addition, the laws and regulations affecting distressed firms are reviewed. Therefore, the main contributions of this thesis are empirical in nature. Regarding the costs of Chapter 11, the evidence presented suggests that they are large. Specifically, the costs of "successful" Chapter 11 are found to be an increasing function of firm size up to a point (i.e., they are a declining function for the very largest firms). Therefore, these findings contrast with previous studies which have found economies of scale for the administrative costs of bankruptcy. This has important implications for capital structure theories which trade-off the costs of bankruptcy with the tax shield advantage of debt over equity. In addition, generally larger costs are found than were found in previous research. Regarding the financial performance of low-grade bonds, the evidence presented suggests that risky debt valuation models which incorporate interest rate risk, in addition to default risk, best describe the return generation process for the three risky bond asset classes examined. The evidence for low-grade corporate bonds, low-grade municipal bonds, and convertible corporate bonds strongly supports this hypothesis. In addition, the evidence examined would suggest that the interaction between the various embedded options in risky debt should be an important element in any risky debt valuation model. Therefore, at a very broad level the thesis has the following two arguments: (1) bankruptcy is very costly; and (2) risky debt displays a return generation process which is very complex. The evidence presented strongly supports both theses.

Abstract:
There is a consistent research base that shows that class and inequality is associated with poorer mental health and experiences of distress. Various explanations for this link have been proposed, including psychological, social, structural, material and political factors. Experiences of powerlessness and oppression have also been implicated. Nevertheless psychology focuses predominately on explanations and interventions at the individual level. To explore this incongruence, a Foucauldian Discourse Analysis was completed of texts produced by Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT), related to the development and practice within IAPT and supervision sessions of high-intensity therapists practicing in IAPT. The emerging discourses are discussed.

Abstract:
This study examines stress and distress experienced by working age individuals in the urban environment. The goals of this research are twofold: (1) to test for a social gradient in stress and distress; and (2) to test for environmental effects on the reporting of stress and distress, specifically focussing on variations in stress and distress across neighbourhoods in Montreal. Montreal was selected as the focus of this study because it is a large metropolitan region with some of the highest income disparities in Canada. Individual-level logistic regression models and multilevel analyses of the 2000/01 Canadian Community Health Survey were applied to identify the determinants of stress and distress and to determine the degree of variation in stress (n = 1944) and distress (n = 1836) captured at the neighbourhood level. Results showed that a social gradient exists with distress in Montreal, but not stress, and that neighbourhoods have an effect on distress above and beyond individual characteristics.

Abstract:
Turbine blades and vanes operate in a hostile environment which leads to deterioration of these components overtime. This paper describes detailed calculations to predict the vibratory response of a high-pressure turbine blade due to the excitation produced by a single distressed upstream vane in a modern turbofan engine. The approach includes detailed computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of the steady flow field produced by the distressed vane, Fourier decomposition of the flow variables to determine the harmonic content, unsteady CFD analysis to determine the resulting vibratory response of the blade, and crack propagation analysis to determine blade life. Predictions of vibratory stress and threshold crack size are summarized as functions of vane distress level. The results, which indicate that this type of vane distress can indeed be a significant excitation source for the blades, are shown to be in good agreement with engine experience. The method provides, for the first time, a quantitative approach to setting limits for acceptable levels of vane distress in the field.

Abstract:
The increasing prevalence of high levels of distress in university student populations has led academic and support staff to investigate options to help students cope with academic stress. Our research focused on investigating the benefit of early academic interventions for content engagement and feedback. In a 1st year psychology student sample of 547 we collected data on psychological measures (motivation and distress), practice test engagement and performance on assessment tasks. Assessment data from a baseline phase (practice tests were available) were compared to assessment data from an intervention (reward for undertaking practice tests). Our experiment also allowed an investigation of the type of benefit gained from practice tests engagement (content specific benefit vs general engagement effects). Results show that undertaking practice tests ahead of assessment quizzes is associated with significantly higher assessment performance. Practice test uptake significantly increased when an incentive was in place resulting in much higher assessment scores for students. Students who showed high levels of distress on the DASS performed significantly lower on assessments. However, highly distressed students who undertook practice testing showed performance at the same level as non-distressed students.

Abstract:
Financial health prediction is the key topic for many entities in building reliable partnerships with other sub-jects. The paper aims to predict the financial distress of Slovak companies from various industries using specific models based on decision trees such as CART, CHAID, and C5.0. These algorithms are the most used tools for identifying key variables explaining financial health and providing a prompt and understandable implementation in risk management. These models are based on a final set of almost 19,000 companies and a wide range of financial ratios from the Ama-deus database. Finally, the results of the individual and ensemble decision trees were compared to identify the best model for the prediction of the financial distress of Slovak companies. The results demonstrate that C5.0 best classifies entities into financial-distressed and non-financial-distressed companies.

Abstract:
With the increasing application of fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) in rigid pavements, the paving industry is now keen to construct thin FRC concrete pavements directly on the granular base layer for low volume roads. In order to understand the feasibility of such thin FRC pavements and to understand the structural responses and distress patterns, experimental test sections were built at the Minnesota Road Research facility (MnROAD) during the summer and fall of 2017. Six different cells were constructed varying in slab thickness, fiber dosage, and base layer thickness. All six of the cells were equipped with various sensors for measuring temperature gradient, dynamic and environmental load responses, as well as joint movement. Periodical distress surveys were conducted to quantify distresses. The joint performance was tested and analyzed for different seasons. The structural responses and distress patterns observed during the first year of the evaluation are presented in this paper. The early age contribution of synthetic structural fibers in reducing joint faulting, fatigue cracking and spalling are assessed based on the comparative performance of the test cells.
