Abstract:
Education should be understood as a method of sharing and disseminating information. It deals not only with obtaining the right information in the right time but also with full understanding and processing of the information in the given context. Distance learning is a technology, where the distance between a teacher and a student, or among students, is characterized by the speed of the feedback, i.e. how quickly the student gets the feedback from his teacher – tutor. This type of education cannot exist without electronic education. It means providing the students with the content of a course via all electronic media including Internet, intranet and CD-ROMs. Before processing of the materials into this form, it is necessary to develop the methodology, which could be used effectively by distance learning project teams.

DL), which has resulted in an unprecedented experiment in the sphere of higher education in Ukraine that requires scientific analysis. The aim of the work was to identify the possible potential directions of DL development in institutions of higher education as a result of marketing research of satisfaction/dissatisfaction of students with DL. The survey method was used in the study. The results of marketing research (an online survey of students) (Kharkiv, 2020, n = 316) allowed the authors to identify the factors of satisfaction and dissatisfaction of students with DL. Students considered the most important factors of satisfaction with DL as follows: development of competencies, self-organization, discipline, self-motivation, responsibility, taking an active position as participants of the educational process, comfort. Students expect that lectures secure improvement of teacher-student communication process; flexibility of educational approaches; use of interactive tools and constant change of activities to maintain the attention, interest, concentration of students on studying process. The latter will maximize students’ involvement in activities during training; improvement of digital competencies. The students` expectations are: flexibility of the DL platforms compared to full-time in-person education; creation of the “map” of the educational process in a distance mode. It is noted that the results of marketing research (the online survey) demonstrated the factors of satisfaction and dissatisfaction of students with DL. This information was considered as the arguments for identifying the possible potential directions of DL development in higher education institutions.

Abstract:
The paper focuses on the urgent problems of linguadidactics caused by Covid-19 pandemic and the need to implement online learning at all Ukrainian institutions of higher learning. English for Specific Purposes online learning involves modern methods that are constantly being improved. They are aimed at effective interaction of all participants in the learning process. The Department of Foreign Languages in Lviv polytechnic national university analyzed the feedback from the teaching staff and students concerning methods applied in online classes which were held during the quarantine period in 2020–2021. Observations of teaching experience, as well as the positive feedback from students proved that online learning English for specific purposes can be as effective as the offline one. The study considers a number of important principles that should be followed in order to succeed in distance learning. English for Specific Purposes online tools involved both synchronous and asynchronous methods. The former methods included videoconferences held with the help of various applications, e.g. Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet etc. Asynchronous means consisted of using instant messengers, email, educational platforms, i.e. virtual learning environment of the university based on the Moodle platform. We conducted a survey among students of five groups of different technical specialties. The survey aimed at finding out their opinion concerning effectiveness of ESP online lessons. It helped to discover what kind of difficulties the students had faced. The survey also allowed us to understand which types of activities were better perceived during video conferences in comparison with lessons in the classroom (i.e. listening and watching video). The analysis of the results obtained brought us to a conclusion about the most efficient way of conducting online classes. Thus, a combination of asynchronous and synchronous methods appeared to be the most effective tool for online mastering of ESP. On the one hand, the asynchronous method can be effective to consolidate lexical and grammar material, as well as develop reading skills. On the other hand, synchronous method provides direct communication in the «student-teacher» format and is the most effective means of transmission and acquiring new knowledge in the discipline of English for Specific Purposes. It also develops speaking skills while involving students in work with breakout rooms. The paper also discusses the issue of students’ knowledge and skills assessment. The process of control has become automated and, thus, more convenient. Diagnostic and control works were performed in the form of current and final tests, hosted on the Moodle platform (virtual learning environment of Lviv Polytechnic National University). This greatly facilitates teacher’s work; as such tests contain a convenient option of automatic checking the correctness of students’ answers to the tests.

Cossa, Adele. "Communication tools for distance learning students." Master's thesis, Faculty of Science, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/33612.

Full text
Abstract:
In distance learning, ICT tools are used to bridge the instructional gap caused by physical distance between the lecturer and the student. Therefore, more effective communication tools can help to enhance the success of a distance learning curriculum. Communication barriers such as disconnectedness, conceptual confusion and lack of social pressure to perform, can negatively affect the success of distance learning. Careful design and implementation of contextually appropriate communication tools is vital in a distance learning curriculum. The University of Cape Town (UCT) Conversion Masters in Information Technology (MIT) originally used a tool called Vula for communication between staff and students, as well as student-to-student communication. Vula is UCT's implementation of the Sakai learning management system. Between 2016 and 2018, a major shift was observed in the adoption and use of communication tools within the programme. There was a noticeable decrease in dialogue between students and lecturers on Vula, and an increase in student-to-student communication using WhatsApp. In 2018, the Slack communication tool wasintroduced to the MIT degree with the objective of increasing communication and collaboration between students and lecturers. This study investigates the adoption and use of the three communication tools (Vula, WhatsApp and Slack) within the context of the University of Cape Town MIT programme. The research aims to provide an understanding of communication needs and practice that can inform the design of distance learning programmes and enable them to harness the potential of social communication tool features. The study describes the nature of communication within the UCT MIT degree. The research also explores the functional features of the tools and how they are used, and the frequency of interaction on the various communication platforms within the MIT programme. This is complemented by a survey of current MIT students and their perceptions. The research analysed 2605 communication messages in Vula (UCT's name for the Sakai learning management system), Slack and WhatsApp communication tools over the three-year transition period 2016-2018. Feedback from a student survey, in which 11 respondents completed a questionnaire after an interview, is also presented. Based on questionnaire responses from MIT students, Vula is viewed as the best tool for administrative matters, WhatsApp is preferred for sharing information and checking on peers, and Slack is perceived as best for communication with all types of participants - students, lecturers and tutors. Most respondents rated WhatsApp as accessible, convenient and providing a good experience, while far fewer did so for Vula and Slack. WhatsApp was also seen to be the tool students used to reinforce or follow up on communications posted on the other tools.

Abstract:
The relationship between learning styles and academic achievement in distance learning college students is analyzed following three steps: The first step identifies the learning style preferences; The second step establishes the relationship between learning styles and academic achievement; The third step analyzes the relationship among learning styles, study habits, and social-academic and technological environment, with academic achievement. Results reveal that theoretic and active learning styles are predominant in undergraduate students while no postgraduate preferences were shown. There is a relationship between undergraduate level and postgraduate level. Recommendations suggesting the continuity of research on this topic are included, in order to consolidate the modality of distance learning at the college level.

Ham, Marsha K. "Students' perceptions of Web-based distance learning courses." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/279944.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate student satisfaction levels with their web-based learning experience. Study sites were three public Doctoral/Research Universities---Extensive. A cross-sectional, web-based survey collected data from students about their perceptions of satisfaction and success in the two months following completion of their spring 2001 courses. Two hundred sixty-nine (269) students enrolled in 40 graduate-level, web-based courses at the three sites were surveyed. Students were divided into two study groups: completers and non-completers. The survey for course completers covered five major topic areas: experience with computers and the Web, course participation, images of self, perceptions of satisfaction and success, and general information. The survey for non-completers covered two topic areas: general information and factors affecting decision to drop from the course. Hierarchical regressions revealed significant relationships between satisfaction and self-efficacy and between self-efficacy and interpersonal control at two sites (p̲ < .05 and p̲ < .001, respectively). Hierarchical regressions also revealed significant relationships between satisfaction and level of communication (p̲ < .01 and p̲ < .05, respectively). When limiting the definition of available technical support to instructor assistance or help from teaching assistants, there appeared to be a significant relationship between available technical support and students' overall success in their courses (p̲ < .05). Students' attitudes about the Web were positively correlated to both their overall satisfaction and success at one site (p̲ < .05) while at the second site attitudes toward the Web were positively correlated only to satisfaction with the course (p̲ < .05). No significant relationships were found between students' participation in collaborative learning activities and satisfaction. The study raises a number of questions related to the relationship of gender to student satisfaction and success and to the relationship of discipline to the structure of the web-based course. Future research can address these relationships to clarify the relationship between students' perceptions of satisfaction and success and the type of learning activities and experiences they encounter in web-based distance courses based on gender and field of study.

Abstract:
A qualitative examination of community college studentsâ experiences taking on-line courses. The study addresses the research question, "How do community college students construct their on-line experiences?" In order to answer this question, the following foci were examined: What are the characteristics of students taking online courses?, Why are they taking on-line courses?, What are facilitative or debilitative dimensions or features that promote or inhibit success in on-line courses?, and, How does the community college infrastructure support students taking web-based courses? The results of the study were grouped into 4 categories: Interpersonal Support, Student Characteristics, Course Issues, and Infrastructure Support. All but 2 of the findings of the PRCC Study are supported by research. The first factor not mentioned in the literature is that some students choose to take a course on-line if they are not interested in the content of the class. The second finding not implicated in the research is that electronic distractions of Instant Messagingâ ¢ and the lure of surfing the Web seem to be more debilitating than interruptions from other sources such as family and work. Other implications of this study involve concerns that are common to both on-line and on-site instruction, as well as the connection between constructivism and on-line learning. Facilitative and debilitative dimensions or features that promote or inhibit success in on-line courses imply that faculty and institutions need to be adapting to the demands of teaching and learning on the Web. Implications of the Study examine improvements to the study and ideas for future research.

Abstract:
Public education in the United States has experienced an increase in distance-learning (DL) opportunities. Because research has focused on student achievement in post-secondary DL programs, little is known about secondary students' experiences. The purpose of the current study was to explore DL applicability within secondary education. Specific research questions addressed by the concurrent mixed methods nested study included examining students' opinions and experiences in a secondary DL course and determining whether individual learning styles were addressed. Structured interviews, group discussions, and a survey were used to gather data over 2 months from 14 students in grades 9 through 12 participating in a state wide Alabama DL program. Surveys were used to assess and match DL activities to Gardner's 8 learning styles. Interviews and discussions explored students' opinions about activities and components and perceptions of their academic achievement. Quantitative data indicated that students reported some activities related to all learning styles with the greatest coverage observed for linguistic methods. Qualitative data were open and axial coded within each research question and the coded data was analyzed to define common DL practices used to meet specific styles and emergent themes related to student perceptions. Triangulation of results showed DL students felt successful based on their participation in a spectrum of activities including interactive video, e-mail, online discussion boards and tutoring sessions, and self-directed learning. The study contributes to positive social change by documenting a variety of strategies employed to successfully engage secondary DL students who present a variety learning styles and challenges related to DL curricular content and modes of delivery.

While there are benefits to learning online, they come at a cost, and students are less likely to pass their online courses compared to their in-person courses. In this chapter, we share two frameworks. We share the 4Es framework that highlights how online courses should be designed to enable, extend, engage, and elevate student learning. However, a well-designed course is not enough, and most students will require support from others to be successful. For this reason, we also share the Academic Communities of Engagement (ACE) framework that highlights the supports that can increase a student’s affective, behavioral, and cognitive engagement. The ACE framework identifies actors within the student’s personal community and course community who can provide students with the support that they require.

Abstract:
The online distance learning (ODL) market has become very competitive with the emergence of new ODL higher education institutions. Further, many traditional universities are switching from face-to-face classes to ODL systems for some of their programs. Therefore, it is very challenging for the ODL institutions to ensure their students remain with them if the students want to continue their studies to a higher level. This study aims to assess the direct and indirect influence of perceived social ability, perceived usefulness, and self-management learning on attitude and intention. The Technology Acceptance Model theory was adopted to clearly define the probability of current ODL’s students will stay with their current ODL institutions if they intend to further their study. 421 responses were used in data analysis and Smartpls 3.0 was employed to investigate the direct and indirect relationship among the constructs. The study’s statistical results have demonstrated that perceived social ability, perceived usefulness, and self-management learning has positive and significant direct influence on attitude and indirect influence on intention. Likewise, an attitude has a positive and significant direct influence on intention. Therefore, this study is vital to draw attention to the factors influencing ODL students’ intention to study further using online distance learning.

Abstract:
Abstract With the increasing globalization and expansion of the people’s activities, distance learning is getting wide attention. Distance learning is not a computer aided education system alone. What is important is that collaboration over the network is a prerequisite for that, so that the technology developed there will be easily utilized for distance manufacturing and other collaborative activities over the network. When we come to think of integrating design and manufacturing over the network, the problem of skill comes up. Skill plays a very important role in manufacturing. But most of the systems developed so far have been focusing their chief attention toward how rigously they can represent design and manufacturing knowledge and experience in terms of symbols, and non-symbolic approaches are still few. It is believed that motion occupies a large portion of skills, but the present systems being such, and in additon, such media as TV, video, etc are one way from a teacher to a student so that it is still very difficult to learn skills over the network, since skill learning requires much interactive processes. Otherwise, students find it very difficult what part of the model motion they should concentrate their focuses. If a teacher can edit the motion of a student and a student can watch how his or her motion is edited, the student will understand more easily what is wrong with his or her motion., and can identify where his or her attention should be focused. Based on this idea, we have developed a preliminary system for distance learning of skills to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach.

Abstract:
Rural schools are usually behind in terms of learning, and part of this could be related to geographical isolation. We explore this hypothesis, assessing the effect of distance between rural schools and local governments on learning in Colombia. We use spatial discontinuous regression models based on detailed administrative records from the education system and granular geographic information. Results indicate that distance to towns and Secretary of Education has significant negative effects on students’ standardized test scores. We evaluated alternative mechanisms, finding that the effect of distance is partly explained by differences in critical educational inputs, such as teachers’ education attainment and contract stability. Finally, we assess the mediating role of a program providing monetary incentives to teachers and principals in remote areas.

Abstract:
Distance education has become the mandatory component of higher education establishments all over the world including Ukraine regarding COVID-19 lockdown and intentions of Universities to render valuable knowledge and provide safe educational experience for students. The present study aimed to explore the student’s and academic staff’s attitude towards e-learning and the most complicated challenges regarding online learning and distance education. Our findings disclosed that the online learning using Zoom, Moodle, Google Meet, BigBlueButton and Cisco has become quite popular among the students and academic staff in Ukraine in time of the lockdown period and beyond. Based on the Principal Component Analysis data processing we can conclude that students’ satisfaction and positive e-learning perception are in a good correlation with quality of e-learning resources and set of apps which are used while e-learning and distance education. Also, education style, methods, and manner predict willingness of students to self-study. The self-motivation, time-management, lack of practice, digital alienation, positive attitude towards ICT, and instruction strategy belong to the most important challenges of COVID-19 lockdown based on the students and academic staff interviews. Online learning on daily purpose should be used in the favor of strengthening of classical higher education rather than replacing the former. Blended education is the best alternative to face-to-face education, because the communication with mentor in a live environmental even virtual should have ushered the learners to complete online learning and improve its results.
